THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS A Capitol Fourth Sunday, July 4 at 8pm Celebrate our country’s 245th birthday with a star-studded musical extravaganza. The 41st edition of America’s Independence Day celebration features performances by top stars from pop, country, R&B, classical, and Broadway, capped off with patriotic classics and a spectacular fireworks display over the iconic Washington, DC skyline.

POV – The Neutral Ground Monday, July 5 at 9:30pm The Neutral Ground is a poignant exploration of the legacy of slavery which much of America has yet to face. The film begins in 2015 with a raucous New Orleans City Council meeting about the removal of four Confederate monuments. When death threats halt the removals in New Orleans, filmmaker CJ Hunt travels across the South to understand why a losing army from 1865 still holds so much political and imaginative power in contemporary America.

Great Performances – Gloria Estefan: Sangre Yoruba Friday, July 9 at 9pm Adventure through three of Brazil's most influential cities with the Grammy Award-winning singer as she explores the origins of its music through its people and offers an inside look at the creation of her new Brazilian-influenced album.

Unforgotten Season 4 on Masterpiece Begins Sunday, July 11 at 9pm In the fourth season, Cassie and Sunny investigate a cold case with alarming links to the police force when a corpse is discovered in a scrap yard, his features frozen in time. All four suspects have links to the law and attended the same police training course back in 1989. But who exactly is fighting for justice?

Professor T Begins Sunday, July 11 at 10pm Eccentric criminal psychology Professor T has a brilliant mind, but also several neurological disorders which make him complex and often difficult, with a very unpredictable nature. Along with his trusted colleagues Annelies and Daan, they form a team of high-powered advisors that the Antwerp Homicide Department comes to rely on.

Icon: Music Through the Lens Begins Friday, July 16 at 9pm Featuring irreverent interviews with some of the most famous music photographers, musicians, gallerists, music journalists, and social commentators, Icon: Music Through the Lens captures what it was like on both sides of the camera when the most recognizable images in history were taken. Highlights include Kevin Cummins on Joy Division, Gered Mankowitz on Jimi Hendrix, Rachael Wright on Billie Eilish, and more.

Great Performances – Roots of Latin Jazz Friday, July 16 at 10pm Celebrate the rhythms of Latin music with the Raices Jazz Orchestra and performances by Grammy-winning artists including Richard Bona and Anaadi. Hosted by Sheila E.

American Masters – Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase the Blues Away Tuesday, July 27 at 9pm Dive into the career of the legendary blues guitarist, a pioneer of Chicago’s West Side sound and major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Support WTIU’s Work with Children An important part of WTIU’s and PBS’s mission is to provide quality educational programming for children. PBS Kids continues to serve as a trusted source for children, educators, and parents alike. According to a PBS survey, 61% of all respondents named PBS Kids the most educational media brand, and 86% of parents agreed that PBS Kids helps prepare children for success in school. In addition to offering daily PBS Kids’ programming, WTIU produces its own local children’s series The Friday Zone and hosts outreach events for children, parents, and educators. To continue to build upon WTIU’s work with children, a generous donor came forward in 2013 with a gift to help the station establish the WTIU Children’s Programming Endowment. The endowment spins off 5% of its earned interest each year for spending on programs and activities for kids. You can help make a positive difference in the lives of children in south central Indiana. Consider making a gift today to the WTIU Children’s Programming Endowment so we can continue to offer educational programming and events. Learn more at wtiu.org/support.

The Latino Experience Begins Tuesday, July 6 at 9pm

Featuring 13 original films made by filmmakers working across genres, The Latino Experience is a new three-part anthology series that explores a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and styles to highlight the rich diversity of the Latino/a/x community across the United States and Puerto Rico. From dramas to documentaries, comedies to magical realism, The Latino Experience showcases an impressive lineup of creative talent, both in front of and behind the camera. “We are excited to highlight and share The Latino Experience, a compilation of shorts that showcase the wide-ranging talent, diversity and complexity within the Latinx community in the US and abroad,” said Wendy Llinas, Senior Director, Programming & Development, PBS. “These narrative and scripted shorts reflect the joy, creativity, courage, humor, pain, and resilience in our communities with top-notch authentic storytelling that reflects the many lived experiences of Latinos/as/x at this moment in history.”

Films included in The Latino Experience were chosen by a panel of experienced filmmakers from entries received by PBS following a call for submissions in August 2020. The selected films in the series include “Death and Deathability: A Period Piece,” “Folk Frontera,” “The Blue Cape,” “La Tienda,” “Dear Queer Dancer,” “Un Pequeño Corte,” “Body and Spirit in Times of Pandemic,” “Our Lady Lupe,” “Pasos de Valor,” “Mi Fango, Mi Cerro,” “The Daily War,” “Cuban American Gothic,” and “Noche Buena.”
