Terrence McNally: American Masters Friday, June 14 at 9pm Playwright, librettist, scriptwriter and outspoken LGBTQ activist Terrence McNally has long believed in the power of the arts to transform society and make a difference. Rising above challenges, including his abusive alcoholic parents and growing up as a gay teen in a conservative Christian town, McNally overcame his own alcoholism (sparked by Angela Lansbury’s intervention), the deaths of friends and lovers to AIDS and cancer, and his own brutal fight with lung cancer.

Jamestown Season 3 Sundays at 10:30pm, starting June 16 In the show’s third and final season, with trade booming and the tobacco farms established, the settlers’ pioneering aspiration soon clashes with reality as they begin to strive for more than new lives—now they crave control and power. The flourishing community creates new tensions between the English and the Pamunkey, and with politics rife in the air, the idealism of the New World is tested.

The Lavender Scare Tuesday, June 18 at 9pm

4 / wtiu.org

In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service. Over the next four decades, tens of thousands of government workers would lose their jobs for no reason other than their sexual orientation. Learn the untold story of how tens of thousands of homosexual federal workers were either fired or denied employment in the 1950s, stirring outrage in the gay community and starting an LGBTQ rights movement with an unlikely hero at the forefront.

Rivers of Life Wednesdays at 8pm starting June 19 This landmark three-part series reveals the extraordinary animals, epic landscapes, and remarkable people who live alongside three iconic rivers. Rivers of Life reveals a wider and fresh perspective on the extraordinary landscapes, surprising wildlife, and extraordinary people of the Nile, the Mississippi, and the Amazon.

When Whales Walked: Journeys in Deep Time Wednesday, June 19 at 9pm They are the most iconic animals on Planet Earth—voracious crocodiles, acrobatic birds, majestic elephants, stupendous whales. To see them is to marvel—and to ask a surprisingly challenging question: Where did these amazing creatures come from? The answers can be found in this new groundbreaking special. Which takes us on a global adventure that reveals new insights into the history of life on earth.

Robert Shaw: American Masters Friday, June 21 at 9pm Trace the improbable journey of Robert Shaw’s life and career, from his childhood as a preacher’s son in rural California through his meteoric rise as a star of popular music during the Great Depression. An early champion of civil rights, his chorales were among the first to break the color barrier in the American South.

Tiananmen: Seven Weeks That Changed the World Tuesday, June 25 at 9pm On June 4, 1989, a violent and bloody pro-democracy demonstration ended, leaving thousands dead and laying the foundation for China’s future. The protest was triggered by the death of former Communist Party of China General Secretary Hu Yaobang in April 1989. Students took to the streets to voice their criticism of the high level of corruption in politics and demanded political change in favor of a more liberal system. wtiu.org / 5

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids Vote for Your Favorite BritCom! Our viewers and members consistently place BritComs near the top of the list of programs that they enjoy most, which is why we’ve created this special opportunity for you to vote for your favorite! One episode of each of the following series will air on Saturdays at 8pm this month. The series were selected based upon WTIU viewer requests and the programs’ wild popularity in other markets. It’s up to you to select the one you would like to see air on WTIU: Are You Being Served? – June 8, 8pm A large, old-fashioned department store in London, Grace Brothers is still run on strictly hierarchical lines. Camp Mr. Humphries, Mrs. Slocombe’s cat, and the ridiculous goings-on at Grace Brothers have kept audiences laughing since 1973. Moone Boy – June 15, 8pm This semi-autobiographical series is written by and stars Chris O’Dowd as the imaginary friend of 11-year-old Martin, the youngest child in the large, loud Moone family. Headed by Martin’s sign writer father, who longs to be an artist and his frazzled mother, this is a family with a lot of love where everyone tends to pull in different directions! One Foot in the Grave – June 22, 8pm Bald, bad-tempered and bolshie, Victor Meldrew might be old and pensioned off, but he is not prepared to take insults, sloppiness, or stupidity lying down. One Foot in the Grave explores the world of 60-year-old Victor Meldrew, a black-humored anti-hero. Still Open All Hours – June 29, 8pm Granville has inherited the small corner shop from his beloved but miserly Uncle Arkwright. With a keen eye on making a profit, Granville comes up with all kinds of hair-brained schemes to encourage his customers to part with their money, but things rarely turn out as he expects. Vote for your favorite series online at bit.ly/wtiubritcom or call 812-855-5900. Voting closes July 6. British comedies are among the most expensive of any series we obtain, which is why we need your continued investment in the programs you enjoy most. Contact our Membership Department at 800-662-3311 or visit wtiu.org to ensure that WTIU has the funds to purchase additional British series in the future.

Highlights Morning Edition Debuts New Theme Music Morning Edition has a new sound! The program launched its new theme music last month. Morning Edition’s historic theme debuted in 1979. The original BJ Leiderman composition and subsequent arrangements by musician Jim Pugh have been heard for decades. NPR and Man Made Music used the work of Leiderman as an inspiration for a fresh and modern sound, while also referencing the show’s historic music and honoring its legacy. We understand the importance of Morning Edition to the thousands of WFIU listeners who make it a part of their daily routines. NPR and WFIU want every aspect of the show to be as engaging as possible, and are excited to introduce the new sound to our broadcasts. What do you think of the new theme? Send your feedback to wfiu@indiana. edu or call 812-855-1357. We’ll be letting NPR know what we’re hearing from our listeners.

Endeavour Season 6 Sunday, June 16 at 9pm Shaun Evans returns for the sixth season of Endeavour, the popular prequel to the beloved Inspector Morse series. Set in the 1960s, the show follows Endeavour Morse in his early years. Endeavour will be facing new challenges, with Morse having started a new role as a uniformed officer at the Woodstock police department and embracing the fashion of the period by growing a mustache. Following the dissolution of the Oxford City Police and the merging with Thames Valley Constabulary at the end of the last season, the new season picks up with the team dispersed as they find their feet in their various new roles. However, despite their separation, the tragic murder of DC George Fancy still hangs over them both collectively and individually, with the case remaining unresolved. Thursday must adjust to working with new boss DI Ronnie Box (Simon Harrison) and junior DS

Alan Jago (Richard Riddell). Meanwhile, Joan has settled back in Oxford and is training to work in social services under the mentor of new manager Viv Wall (Alison Newman). Endeavour and the team are pushed to their limits in this season, as they uncover the truth behind the crime that has haunted them all. Season 6 of Endeavour will be comprised of four episodes, a return to the series’ established form after the slight expansion of Season 5, which was six episodes long. Also new for Season 6 is the directorial debut of Shaun Evans, as the series’ star takes over behind the camera as well as in front of it. The episode directed by Evans takes place around the 1969 Apollo Moon Landing, with Morse finding himself investigating the death of a promising young astrophysicist and his girlfriend.
