This Month’s Highlights Red, White and Rock (My Music) Saturday, June 6 at 6:30pm Join Frankie Valli, Connie Francis, and more for a patriotic celebration of America and pop oldies music. Featuring a dream lineup of artists from the rock, pop, and doo-wop days of the late ’50s and early to mid-60s, Red, White and Rock honors the greats of those genres, including the Righteous Brothers, Rosie and the Originals, and Ruby & the Romantics.

Great Performances at the Met: Akhnaten Sunday, June 14 at 2pm In her Metropolitan Opera debut, IU alumna Karen Kamensek conducts Akhnaten, which portrays the 17-year reign of the Egyptian pharaoh. Anthony Roth Costanzo stars as the title role, and alongside him are J’nai Bridges as Nefertiti, Dísella Lárusdóttir as Queen Tye, and Zachary James as Amenhotep III. Composed by Academy Awardnominated Philip Glass, Akhnaten brings to life the story of legendary pharaoh.

Grantchester Season 5 on Masterpiece Sunday, June 14 at 8:56pm Grantchester returns to MASTERPIECE for its fifth season. The series premiere begins in 1957, with Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) settling into his role as the vicar of Grantchester. His best friend, Detective Inspector Geordie Keating, has come to accept his wife Cathy’s commitment to her job—just about. In six installments of the acclaimed series, Will’s faith will be thoroughly tested as he, Geordie, and other ensemble characters are reminded once more that there’s darkness lurking in their little corner of Cambridgeshire.

Mae West: American Masters Tuesday, June 16 at 8pm Mae West achieved great acclaim in every entertainment medium that existed during her lifetime, spanning eight decades of the 20th century. A full-time actress at seven, a vaudevillian at 14, a dancing sensation at 25, a Broadway playwright at 33, a silver screen ingénue at 40, a Vegas nightclub act at 62, a recording artist at 73, and a camp icon at 85—West left no format unconquered. She possessed creative and economic powers unheard of for a female entertainer in the 1930s and still rare today. This is the first major documentary film to explore West’s life and career, as she “climbed the ladder of success wrong by wrong” to become a writer, performer, and subversive agitator for social change. 4 / wtiu.org

Prehistoric Road Trip Wednesday, June 17 at 10pm Host Emily Graslie hits the road for a fun and fascinating journey around the Dakotas, Montana, Nebraska, and Wyoming to explore 2.5 billion years of our planet’s history. Each of the three episodes examines different eras in time, focusing on the geology, ecology, and environment. To discover what the landscape may have resembled millions or even billions of years ago, Graslie examines the fossils of former plants and animals. On this immersive adventure, Graslie will uncover and discover the history of North American dinosaurs and other fascinating prehistoric creatures, including ancient fishes, mammoths, and early mammals.

Great Performances: Ann Friday, June 19 at 9pm Great Performances: Ann is a no-holds-barred theatrical portrait of Ann Richards, legendary Governor of Texas (1991-95). Written and performed by Emmy Award-winning actor Holland Taylor, the play is a compelling look at the impassioned, inspiring woman who enriched the lives of her followers, friends, and family. Unfolding through public speeches and private phone calls with famous figures including the likes of Bill Clinton, Ann Richards is revealed as a complex, colorful, and captivating character bigger than the state from which she hailed.

Lucy Worsley’s Royal Myths & Secrets Sunday, June 21 at 8pm Host and historian Lucy Worsley takes viewers across Britain and Europe to visit incredible locations where royal history was made. During Worsley’s tour through European history, viewers learn the true stories behind Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada, Queen Anne and the formation of Great Britain, Marie Antoinette and the French Revolution, and more.

POV: And She Could Be Next Monday, June 29 and Tuesday, June 30 at 9pm This two-part documentary series tells the story of a defiant movement of women of color who are transforming American politics from the ground up. Filmed from 2018 through 2019, the program follows forward-thinking candidates and organizers across the country, asking whether democracy itself can be preserved—and made stronger—by those most marginalized. The episodes center individuals at the heart of the movement behind the New American Majority, including Stacey Abrams, Bushra Amiwala, Maria Elena Durazo, Veronica Escobar, Lucy McBath, Rashida Tlaib, and Nse Ufot. wtiu.org / 5

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids Hero Elementary Premieres June 1 Science is powerful—and Hero Elementary, a new multiplatform animated PBS KIDS series, co-produced by Twin Cities PBS and Portfolio Entertainment, helps spark a love of science among kids nationwide. Hero Elementary is a school for budding superheroes, where kids learn to master their innate powers, like flying and teleportation, while exploring science along the way. The series gives children ages 4 to 7 important tools to help them solve problems by encouraging them to think and act like scientists, igniting their natural curiosity. Hero Elementary also showcases character and social-emotional concepts such as kindness, empathy, and commitment to working together to solve problems. Hero Elementary stars a diverse group of super students, led by their quirky and enthusiastic teacher, Mr. Sparks. The “Sparks’ Crew” includes Lucita Sky, an empathetic natural leader with the power to fly—and a fear of heights; AJ Gadgets, a superhero who is passionate about all things “super” and has the ability of thought projection and making super gadgets—and who also happens to be on the Autism spectrum; Sara Snap, who’s tiny, but mighty, with super strength and the power to teleport; and Benny Bubbles, a loyal and protective animal lover with a heart of gold, who can create amazing bubbles that double as forcefields and more. Together they help people, solve problems, and try to make the world a better place. When their imperfect powers aren’t up to the task, they look to their other powers—the Superpowers of Science—to help them investigate, observe, make predictions, and figure out a solution. These kids may be super human, but it’s science that makes humans truly super!

Highlights Become a Part of American History with StoryCorps Connect The largest global health crisis in a century is changing the way we live and interact with our friends, neighbors, and families. StoryCorps wants to help you to connect and share stories with loved ones at this unprecedented time. With a fierce determination to honor the wisdom of older generations and to leave a legacy for younger generations, StoryCorps has created a new platform called StoryCorps Connect—a first-of-its-kind technology that enables people across the country to take part in the magic of a StoryCorps interview with a loved one, but while doing it remotely. Through StoryCorps Connect, people can interview one another through a computer or a mobile device and instantly share the recording with the StoryCorps’ Online Archive and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps Connect was developed in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This platform will help connect generations, preserve the wisdom of humanity, and offer a source of comfort and meaning to elders who may feel isolated and alone. Great Performances – Gloria: A Life tells the story one of the most inspiring women of the feminist movement: Gloria Steinem. Fifty years after Steinem began advocating for women’s equality and championing the equality rights of others, her vision remains highly relevant.

Diane Paulus, and produced by Pulitzer Prize- and 10-time Tony-winning producer Daryl Roth, Gloria: A Life brings to life a richly detailed account of one of the most inspiring and remarkable women of our time.
