This Month’s Highlights George W. Bush: American Experience Monday, May 4 and Tuesday, May 5 at 9pm In this two-part, four-hour look at the life and presidency of George W. Bush, follow his unorthodox road to the presidency through the contested election of 2000, when a Supreme Court ruling resulted in his becoming the 43rd President. George W. Bush: American Experience chronicles the tumultuous events, domestically and internationally, that dominated Bush’s eight years in office – including the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the subsequent war in Iraq, the search for weapons of mass destruction, Hurricane Katrina, and the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression.

NOVA – Eagle Power Wednesday, May 13 at 9pm Eagles are the most powerful birds in the sky. They are capable of tackling enormous prey, spotting food at vast distances and soaring for miles on the wing. But how do they achieve this? To find out, this film follows the dramatic story of a family of bald eagles and bird specialist Lloyd Buck puts his trained golden eagle to the test in a series of remarkable experiments.

Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words Monday, May 18 at 9pm Take a rare look into the life and perspective of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as he discusses his life, legacy and legal theories. Drawing on a rich array of historical archive material, period and original music, personal photos, and evocative recreations, Created Equal: Clarence Thomas in His Own Words takes viewers through Thomas’s complex and often controversial tenure as a member of the Supreme Court, exploring race, faith, power, jurisprudence, and personal resilience.

Mr. Tornado: American Experience Tuesday, May 19 at 9pm The Super Outbreak of 1974 was the most intense tornado outbreak on record, tearing a vicious path of destruction across thirteen states, generating 148 tornadoes from Alabama to Ontario, damaging thousands of homes, and killing more than 300 people. Meteorologist Tetsuya Theodore “Ted” Fujita spent ten months studying the outbreak’s aftermath in the most extensive aerial tornado study ever conducted, and through detailed mapping and leaps of scientific imagination, made a series of meteorological breakthroughs. Mr. Tornado is the remarkable story of the man whose groundbreaking work in research and applied science saved thousands of lives. 4 / wtiu.org


National Memorial Day Concert Sunday, May 24 at 8pm The National Memorial Day Concert features uplifting musical performances, documentary footage and dramatic readings that honor the military service of all our men and women in uniform and their families at home. The concert unites the country in remembrance and appreciation of those who gave their lives for our nation and serves those who are grieving through the mission put forward by Abraham Lincoln in his second inaugural address, “Let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan.”

Viral: Antisemitism in Four Mutations Tuesday, May 26 at 9pm Emmy-winning filmmaker Andrew Goldberg and producer Diana Robinson explore antisemitism’s infectious behavior in Viral: Antisemitism in Four Mutations. Goldberg travels through four countries to speak firsthand with victims, witnesses, antisemites, and interview subjects including Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Fareed Zakaria, George Will, Deborah Lipstadt, and many others. The increasing antisemitism within each of these four countries paints a terrifying portrait of how this kind of global hatred begins, and how easily it disseminates.

Actual World, Possible Future Thursday, May 28 at 10pm Actual World, Possible Future explores the lives and work of Elinor and Vincent Ostrom, who sought to address the enormous problems that plague human societies: climate change, endangered species, ocean pollution, deforestation. The Ostroms founded The Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University, known as The Workshop, which has become home to visiting scholars from more than 100 countries.

Iconic Women of Country Saturday, May 30 at 8:30pm Iconic Women of Country opens up the music vaults to provide an intimate look at legendary female artists, their stories and songs, and why they’ve stood the test of time. A love letter to the women of Nashville, the program pays tribute to 15 icons of country music – Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee and more – with heartfelt performances from ten contemporary artists, including Trisha Yearwood, Wynonna Judd, and Kathy Mattea.

This relief package includes new benefits for taxpayers making a charitable contribution. Learn how you can take advantage of these opportunities and support WTIU at the same time:

Creation of Universal Charitable Deduction for Non-Itemizers The universal charitable deduction is an “above-the-line deduction” capped at $300 per individual ($600 for a married couple) for outright gifts of cash to qualified charities. This new charitable income tax deduction can be claimed by non-itemizers in addition to their standard deduction.

Lifting of Cap on Annual Contributions for Itemizers and Corporations Charitable income tax deductions for contributions to public charities are generally limited to a percentage of a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income (AGI). The new law lifts the cap on annual contributions of cash for those who itemize, increasing it from 60% to 100% of AGI for 2020. Any excess contributions can be carried over to the next five years. For cash contributions from corporations, the new law raises the annual limit from 10% to 25% of taxable income. Please consult your tax advisor for advice on how the CARES Act may impact your charitable giving. Every donor’s tax situation is unique.

Asian Americans Monday, May 11 and Tuesday, May 12 at 8pm Asian Americans, a new five-part documentary series, explores the impact of the fastest-growing racial/ethnic group in the United States. The film series chronicles the contributions, and challenges of Asian Americans, highlighting personal histories and new academic research that casts a fresh lens on U.S. history and the role Asian Americans have played in it.

Led by a team of Asian American filmmakers, including Academy Award-nominated series produced Renee Tajima-Peña (Who Killed Vincent Chin?, No Más Bebés), Asian Americans showcases the significant role of Asian Americans in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s and identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century to modern refugee crises in a globally connected world.
