Spotlight Step inside a world of intrigue, wealth and the unexpected in the riveting MASTERPIECE drama The Miniaturist, now on WTIU Passport. In 1686, 18-year-old Nella arrives in Amsterdam to meet her wealthy merchant husband and save her family from financial ruin.

The Miniaturist

But instead of a warm welcome, she arrives to a house full of secrets, a husband who is not all she imagined, and a very peculiar wedding gift – a cabinet that is a miniature replica of their home. The man tasked with furnishing the cabinet is the elusive Miniaturist, whose tiny creations seem to be predicting and

mirroring what is happening in the house with unsettling precision. The Miniaturist is based on the New York Times bestselling book of the same name by author Jessie Burton and has sold more than 1 million copies. Already using Passport? Sign in at pbs.org/passport/videos to watch The Miniaturist. Want to know more? Passport is available to all WTIU donors who make a yearly contribution of at least $60 or an ongoing monthly contribution of $5 or more. Call 1-800-987-9848 for more information. wtiu.org / 3

Independent Lens – The Cleaners Monday, November 12 at 10pm “Fake news.” Violent pornography. Terrorist propaganda. Everyone agrees that the initial dream of the internet as a utopian global community has evolved into something much more sinister. Silicon Valley leaders and lawmakers have taken steps to remove some of the internet’s most hateful sites and content, but who actually sifts through the net and removes them? The Cleaners looks at five digital cleaners or “content moderators” – young people in an outsourced post in the Philippines who spend each day scanning the net and deciding what to keep and what to delete.

We’ll Meet Again Season 2 Tuesdays at 8pm, beginning November 13 We’ll Meet Again returns for a second season of compelling human stories of hope, courage and resilience, exploring some of history’s most dramatic events through the personal experiences of those who lived through them. Executive produced and reported by Ann Curry, this show tells the stories of ordinary people caught up in the tides of history who are seeking to be reunited with those who helped them – either physically or emotionally – survive these transformational events.

Fall Gift Planning The breeze is beginning to cool. The leaves starting to turn. Fall has traditionally been a popular time for giving as people review their finances and take steps to assure they have fulfilled their charitable commitments for the year. The introduction of tax reform in 2018 may have you wondering about the best way to continue to be charitable. Although the standard deduction has doubled, gifts of appreciated property or stock, a gift from your IRA (if 70 ½ or older), and naming us as a partial beneficiary of your retirement plan are still tax-smart methods of making a gift. The Indiana College Tax Credit remains in effect for your state taxes. You may also find that the final months of the year are an ideal time to review your long-range financial and estate plans. Careful planning of charitable gifts can play a vital role in assuring continued economic security for you and loved ones while making what may be your gift of a lifetime. As you pause to plan between now and December 31, consider the consistent high quality of programs and services public radio provides to you and your family. And, the greater community is the beneficiary of thoughtful gifts from people like you—the good friends of public TV. WTIU wouldn’t be the same without you, and you wouldn’t be the same without WTIU! For information on making an end-of-the-year gift to the station, or for a free brochure on Effective Giving After Tax Reform, call 812-855-2935 or email plannedgiving@indianapublicmedia.org. wtiu.org / 7

The documentary traces the careers of early Gennett musicians, including Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, and the singing cowboy Gene Autry, among other popular artists of the era, and features several of their rare 1920s recordings. During the early 20th century, one tiny recording studio in Richmond, Indiana, had a big impact on the soundtrack of the Jazz Age. The Music Makers of Gennett Records tells the unlikely story of the Gennett Recording Studios, where many of the greatest artists in American jazz, blues, country, and gospel music first recorded.

the major recording studios in New York refused to record much more than classical, Eurocentric compositions. The Music Makers of Gennett Records W features interviews with many of today’s most celebrated musical performers, composers, and music executives, including jazz great Wynton Marsalis, country music legend Ricky Skaggs, Broadway star Michael Feinstein, gospel music executive Dr. Bobby Jones, and many other artists, historians, and experts all over the U.S. They reflect on the importance of these early Gennett recordings and how they helped shape the worlds of jazz, blues, country, rock, pop and hip-hop for subsequent generations.
