This Month’s Highlights NOVA – Dead Sea Scroll Detectives Wednesday, November 6 at 9pm
First discovered in a cave by a Bedouin shepherd boy in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls were written two millennia ago and include the oldest known versions of the Hebrew Bible. What can new technology reveal about the Dead Sea Scrolls? Join scientists as they investigate suspicious, newly surfaced fragments to see if they’re forfeited, and use imaging techniques to digitally unravel the charred remains of a scroll.
What the Durrells Did Next: A Masterpiece Special Sunday, November 10 at 8pm Learn the definitive true story behind one of the bestloved families in TV drama, and see how Corfu shaped the personalities and ambitions of each Durrell. It’s an outlandish story of expeditions, fame, heartbreak and a zoo. Hosted by Keeley Hawes, who plays Louisa on the series, this special will reveal what the Durrells did after they left Corfu.
Warrior Tradition
Monday, November 11 at 9pm Discover the heartbreaking, inspiring, and largely untold story of Native Americans in the United States military. Why would Indian men and women put their lives on the line for the very government that took their homelands? This film relates the stories of Native American warriors from their own points of view—stories of service, pain, courage and fear.
Nature – Nature’s Biggest Beasts Wednesday, November 13 at 8pm
See the ingenious strategies that nature’s biggest beasts employ to conquer their environments, from the Komodo dragon with a deadly bite to the tallest giraffe to the bird-eating armored ground cricket. These are their epic survival stories.

Independent Lens – Conscience Point/ Jewel’s Hunt Monday, November 18 at 10:30pm
Explore how the onslaught of development in Long Island’s wealthy Hamptons has triggered a clash of values. Members of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, farmers and fishing communities seek to stop the building boom and preserve the environment. Plus, a teenage girl and her father turn to the land to feed their family in a remote village in Western Alaska.
Great Performances – Much Ado About Nothing Friday, November 22 at 9pm
Recorded live at The Public Theater’s Free Shakespeare in the Park, this bold interpretation of Shakespeare’s comedic masterpiece features Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black, Broadway’s The Color Purple) and Grantham Coleman (Buzzer, The Americans) as the sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick. Tony Award winner Kenny Leon (American Son, A Raisin in the Sun) directs with choreography by Tony Award nominee Camille A. Brown (Choir Boy).
College Behind Bars
Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26 at 9pm This four-hour film tells the story of a small group of incarcerated men and women struggling to earn college degrees and turn their lives around in one of the most rigorous prison education programs in the United States—the Bard Prison Initiative. Take a stark and intimate journey into one of the most pressing issues of our time—our failure to provide meaningful rehabilitation for the over two million Americans living behind bars.
The Plastics Problem: PBS NewsHour Presents Wednesday, November 27 at 10pm
This program explores what’s being done about our extensive appetite for damaging single-use plastic. Traveling from Boston to Seattle—and reporting from the Pacific shores of Costa Rica to the rocky beaches of Easter Island—PBS NewsHour’s reporting team uncovered not only the extensive environmental damage plastic has already caused, but also innovations and solutions in plastic management. wtiu.org / 5

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids Fall Gift Planning The breeze is beginning to cool. The leaves starting to turn. Fall has traditionally been a popular time for giving as people review their finances and take steps to assure they have fulfilled their charitable commitments for the year. The introduction of tax reform in 2018 may have you wondering about the best way to continue to be charitable. Although the standard deduction has doubled, gifts of appreciated property or stock, a gift from your IRA (if 70 ½ or older), and naming us as a partial beneficiary of your retirement plan are still tax-smart methods of making a gift. The Indiana College Tax Credit remains in effect for your state taxes. You may also find that the final months of the year are an ideal time to review your long-range financial and estate plans. Careful planning of charitable gifts can play a vital role in assuring continued economic security for you and loved ones while making what may be your gift of a lifetime. As you pause to plan between now and December 31, consider the consistent high quality of programs and services public television provides to you and your family. And, the greater community is the beneficiary of thoughtful gifts from people like you—the good friends of public television. WTIU wouldn’t be the same without you, and you wouldn’t be the same without WTIU! For information on making an end-of-the-year gift to the station, visit wtiu.org/support. wtiu.org / 7

Highlights “Alexa, Play Morning Edition” NPR and Amazon recently debuted a new Alexa skill: Morning Edition is now available on-demand on all Alexa-enabled smart speakers. Just say, “Alexa, play Morning Edition,” and you will hear the last hour of that morning’s show as it was aired by WFIU. You will no longer need to worry about missing a story, or tuning in midbroadcast, because now you can choose when to listen at your own convenience. The on-demand experience of Morning Edition, with its original national and local news segments, will be available on Alexaenabled smart speakers each weekday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. local time. Morning Edition has grown into the most listened-to news radio program in the country, with over 14 million people tuning in each week; and through innovations and expansion onto new devices, NPR and its Member Stations are reaching more people on more platforms than ever before. Tune in, and stay informed.

Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Sunday, November 17 at 7pm For five decades now, Sesame Street has been using the power of media to help kids everywhere grow smarter, stronger, and kinder. The pioneering children’s series premiered on PBS November 10, 1969, and has gone on to become the most widely viewed children’s program in the world, reaching over 150 million. Today, more than 150 versions of the show are being produced in 70 languages, with plans for more countries. This month, Sesame Street celebrates its 50th anniversary with a new television special. A cast of furry friends and some very special guests—including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Patti LaBelle, Sterling K. Brown, and many more— will visit the world’s most iconic street. To mark the special event, the whole neighborhood comes together to take a photo
under the Sesame Street sign—but the sign is missing! While Elmo and friends search for the sign, we take a look back at 50 years of Sesame Street memories, and everyone soon realizes that Sesame Street isn’t just a sign or a street—it’s a place where everybody is welcome, learning is fun, and all kinds of monsters, birds, and humans come together to form lifelong friendships. Wondering how to get to Sesame Street? Don’t worry, it’s closer than you think.
