This Month’s Highlights POV - Dark Money Monday, October 1 at 10pm Your vote can be bought, but at what cost? This program follows local Montana journalist John S. Adams, who is determined to uncover the truth about funding in his state’s elections. The film gains insights over the course of three election cycles as it solves an increasingly complicated and blurred puzzle. Dark Money traces Adams’ steps and sheds light on the grassroots movement to unveil the mysterious financing behind our elections, going back to the 2010 Supreme Court decision over Citizens United.

Secrets of the Dead - The Woman in the Iron Coffin Wednesday, October 3 at 10pm On October 4, 2011, construction workers were shocked to uncover human remains in an abandoned lot in the Elmhurst neighborhood of Queens, New York. So great was the level of preservation, witnesses first assumed they had stumbled upon a recent homicide. Forensic analysis, however, revealed a remarkably different story.

Great Performances - Grammy Salute to Music Legends 2018 Friday, October 5 at 9pm The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) honor this year’s selection of Lifetime Achievement Awards in the third annual Great Performances special. This year’s all-star concert honors Neil Diamond, Tina Turner, Queen, The Meters, Hal Blaine, Emmylou Harris, and Louis Jordan. A new roster of current artists gather to perform tributes to the music of the 2018 honorees.

Shakespeare Uncovered - Much Ado About Nothing Friday, October 12 at 9pm

4 / wtiu.org

Much Ado About Nothing is one of 13 plays that Shakespeare set in Italy, a country that was warm, sensuous, and inviting for any 16th-century Englishmen writing about lovers. Claudio and Hero are the conventional lovers, too tongue-tied to speak to each other; Beatrice and Benedick are the skeptics, too busy insulting each other to realize how much they are in love. Hosted by Helen Hunt.

Itzhak Perlman: American Masters Sunday, October 14 at 10pm This film looks beyond the man widely considered to be the world’s greatest violinist to see a polio survivor whose parents emigrated from Poland to Israel and a young man who struggled to be taken seriously as a music student when schools saw only his disability. Perlman’s life story unfolds through conversations with fellow musicians and friends, including Billy Joel, Alan Alda, pianist Martha Argerich, cellist Mischa Maisky, and his wife of 50 years, Toby.

God Knows Where I Am Monday, October 15 at 10pm On May 3, 2008, the body of a homeless woman was found in an abandoned New Hampshire home. A journal found beside the body documents a journey of starvation and the loss of sanity with poignancy, humor, and spirituality. God Knows Where I Am tells the story of Linda Bishop, a well-educated New Hampshire mother diagnosed with severe bipolar disorder with psychosis, who was intermittently incarcerated and homeless.

Autumnwatch New England Wednesday, October 17 at 8pm Enjoy time-lapse changes of fall foliage; a quest for majestic moose in Maine; key wildlife species like squirrels, chipmunks, and turkey gangs as they invade backyards in preparation for the winter months; and the critters like owls, bats, and bears that make the most of nighttime. Audiences can expect to see segments that highlight Native American history and traditions, Halloween traditions, regional fairs, and the many farms that provide the region with its rich varieties of apples, pumpkins, cranberries, and maple syrups.

Independent Lens - Young Men and Fire Monday, October 29 at 10pm Filmed during two recent wildfire seasons, Young Men and Fire is a sweeping yet deeply personal account of a single wildland firefighting crew as they struggle with fear, loyalty, dreams, and demons. What emerges is a rich story of working-class men—their exterior world, their interior lives, and the fire that lies between.

WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids Ensuring the Future of WTIU WTIU recently received a surprise estate gift from member Sudhir Sahu. Sudhir received his PhD in Molecular Virology from Bihar Veterinary College in Patna, India. He worked for the US Department of Agriculture as a veterinarian in animal diseases for 35 years. When he retired in 2005 he was living in Ames, Iowa. Looking for a city that was not too cold in the winter and also had a large research university, he discovered Bloomington, Indiana. In his retirement in Bloomington, Sudhir enjoyed working as a volunteer with community organizations such as Salvation Army, Bloomington Professionals, the Shalom Center, and, occasionally at WTIU. He was a big fan of PBS programming. After attending several open houses, Sudhir decided to include WTIU along with several other local charitable organizations in his will. He passed away in January of 2018 and the sale of his Bloomington home was divided five ways, resulting in a lovely gift for WTIU. Unrestricted gifts are added to the WTIU Fund to collect interest and help ensure the future needs and success of the station. We are very grateful to Sudhir Sahu for his generosity of spirit and love for WTIU. If you are interested in including WTIU in your estate planning, do let us be of assistance. You can send an email to plannedgiving@indianapublicmedia.org or go online at WTIU.org/support for more information. wtiu.org / 7

The Circus - American Experience Monday, October 8 and Tuesday, October 9 at 9pm Once upon a time, the circus was the biggest form of entertainment in American culture—its stars were among the most famous people in the country and its presence would shut entire towns down. It was also a place where the social roles dictated by society could be subverted; where young women could become lion tamers and young men traveled the world as roustabouts. This four-hour, two-part program explores the colorful history of this popular, influential and distinctly American form of entertainment, from the first one-ring show at the end of the 18th century to 1956, when the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey big top was pulled down for the last time. Part one explores the origins of the American circus, beginning with the 1793 establishment of the first circus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It also looks into the massive influence of P.T. Barnum, who developed the largest touring show in existence at the time. Barnum was well-known for his elaborate and

outlandish marketing campaigns and his industrialization of the circus business using the train to tour. He met his match, however, in the form of Adam Forepaugh and James Bailey. The rivalry between Barnum and Bailey grew until they realized they would be better off as partners instead of enemies—culminating in a merger marked by a wild publicity stunt with a baby elephant. Part two explores the genesis and rise of the Ringling Bros circus, which eventually overtook and bought out Barnum and Bailey’s empire. For a while, they ran the two shows separately, but, in 1918, after several tough seasons during World War I, the brothers combined their circuses into one mammoth outfit: the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, a moving town of more than 1,100 people, 735 horses, nearly 1,000 other animals and 28 tents. However, this was not to last; wars and the Great Depression brought the circus’s pace to a limp and by 1956, John North closed the last Ringling Bros. Circus.
