WTIU Kids 24-7 channel! Available over-the-air for free on Channel 30.5 wtiu.org/kids wtiu.org/kids Join Us for An Evening with Judy Woodruff The host and managing editor of PBS NewsHour is making a stop in Bloomington this month to share her adventures and experiences as a journalist and to help celebrate WTIU’s and PBS’ 50th anniversaries. An Evening with Judy Woodruff takes place September 21 at 7:30pm at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. Tickets are available at wtiu.org/events. “WTIU is thrilled to bring Judy Woodruff to our community. I’m especially excited about the timing of Judy Woodruff’s visit this September, since Election Day 2019 will only be about seven weeks away. Campaign season will be in full swing, and it will be interesting to get her take on our country’s political landscape at that point in time,” said Brent Molnar, WTIU’s Station Operations Director. Broadcast journalist Judy Woodruff has covered politics and other news for more than four decades at NBC, CNN, and PBS. At PBS from 1983 to 1993, she was the chief Washington correspondent for the MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. From 1984 to 1990, she also anchored PBS’ award-winning documentary series, Frontline with Judy Woodruff. Moving to CNN in 1993, she served as anchor and senior correspondent for 12 years and also anchored the weekday program Inside Politics. She returned to PBS NewsHour in 2007, and in 2013, she and the late Gwen Ifill were named the first two women to co-anchor a national news broadcast. After Ifill’s death, Woodruff was named sole anchor. Doors will open for this reserved seating event at 7pm. The program is expected to last approximately 90 minutes. Support for this event comes from presenting partner IU Media School and supporting partner Lennie’s.

Programs in red are WTIU/locally-related programs
Farewell to Perry Metz This month, we say goodbye to Perry Metz, who has served as general manager of WTIU for 16 years. Under his leadership, our station has thrived through an expansion of local programming, membership, and endowments. “The WTIU staff is creative and inventive and they have provided many moments of memorable television for Indiana,” Metz said. “I’m so proud of what they have accomplished telling the stories of state history, culture, and arts.” As general manager, Metz expanded the breadth and depth of local and regional programming so that the station would be adding high-value content to the offerings of PBS and other national producers. “The stations that survive the explosion of direct-to-the-consumer content will be the ones who provide the strongly local material that no one else is producing,” he said. Metz also began a growing investment in local and regional news which continues today. Now the largest public newsroom in Indiana, the WFIU-WTIU News Team has won national Murrow and PRNDI awards as well as numerous state recognitions, including 40 awards in 2019 alone. “I believe that thoughtful and consistent journalism is the backbone of the American democracy,” Metz said. “With reliable information, citizens are best equipped to decide the future of their cities, states, and nation.” Metz’s other achievements during his tenure include expanding the production of our award-winning local documentaries (more than 100 since 2003); seeing membership income top $1 million annually; and creating endowments for news, student internships, and classical and jazz music. As he heads into retirement, Metz leaves behind a legacy of quality news and local programming, plus a solid financial base, which we will continue to build on in the future. And the future looks bright for Metz as well. “My friends know that I love to travel and I plan to do some writing as well,” Metz said of his retirement plans. “But the stations haven’t seen the last of me. I’ll continue to volunteer, too.”
A Note from the General Manager Bringing you the best programs on Indiana history, culture, and art is possible because of the investments you have made in WTIU over the years. All of us are grateful for your support. I feel that sentiment keenly because, after 16 years as general manager, I will be retiring this fall. Working at WTIU with such a creative staff has been rewarding and fun, as we have produced more than 50 full-length TV documentaries during this time. Our website has become broad and deep, attracting more than 4 million pageviews annually. The Friday Zone, Indiana Newsdesk, and Journey Indiana are popular with the membership. I thank you for your encouragement, advice, and support and hope they will continue. This fall, we will install a new, more powerful TV transmitter that will improve reception and extend our broadcast reach to more parts of southern Indiana. We are spending more now to future-proof the station. The broadcast industry will soon begin transitioning to a new technical standard and we want to be ready. It will eventually change how you watch TV. he standard (ATSC 3.0) eventually will enable: T • Live TV on your mobile phone through broadcast rather than your data plan • Personalized viewing experiences to your home AND car • Enhanced picture quality and sound • Unseen but real-time information provided to first responders during emergencies • Telemedicine for rural areas • Datacasting for businesses • Enhanced internet service for your home All of these features will be possible through the new broadcast signal. The catch is that the changeover is not mandated by the government. It will happen city by city. Oh, and it is not backward-compatible. That means your current TV will not be able to receive the new signal. You will need a set-top box, dongle, cable/ satellite, or a new, more complex TV set. Cable and satellite companies likely will provide the necessary equipment for their customers. The change is still some years away for WTIU, but we are laying the groundwork now. Next month, I will join you on the other side of the TV screen, and I hope we all will be learning from and enjoying WTIU programming for years to come.

Country Music Sunday-Wednesday, September 15-18 and September 22-25 at 8pm Step back in time and journey through the compelling history of a truly American art form with Country Music, a new eight-part, 16-hour film directed by Ken Burns, and produced by Burns and his long-time collaborators Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. The documentary, written by Duncan, chronicles the highs and lows of country music’s early days, from southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak and faith to the rollicking Western swing of Texas, California’s honky-tonks, and Nashville’s “Grand Ole Opry.” The film follows the evolution of country music over the course of the 20th century as it eventually emerges to become “America’s music.” Country Music explores crucial questions–– “What is country music?” and “Where did it come from?”––while focusing on the biographies of the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped it—from the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe, and Bob Wills to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks, and many more.
Much like the music itself, the film tells unforgettable stories of hardships and joys shared by everyday people. In advance of the premiere, PBS will debut a two-hour special, Country Music: Live at the Ryman, A Concert Celebrating the Film by Ken Burns, on Sunday, September 8 at 8pm. Hosted by Burns, the show features performances and appearances by celebrated musicians Dierks Bentley, Rosanne Cash, Rhiannon Giddens, Vince Gill, Kathy Mattea, Marty Stuart, Dwight Yoakam, and more. WTIU will also air a local companion piece to Country Music. Fingerstyle! Indiana’s Guitar Festival features performances and a behind-the-scenes look at the annual fingerstyle competition that takes place in Nashville, Indiana. The documentary includes interviews with the performers, as well as fingerstyle guitar experts and music historians, who provide an overview of the fingerstyle technique. Production support for the program comes from Bear Wallow Distillery and Brown County Visitor’s Center. Learn more at wtiu.org/fingerstyle.
