April Events Freedom Riders Screening
Be More Awards
Stanley Nelson

From May until December 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses as they journeyed through the Deep South. Determined to test and challenge segregated travel facilities, the Freedom Riders were greeted with mob violence and bitter racism, testing their belief in non-violent activism. From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (The Murder of Emmett Till, Jonestown, Wounded Knee), Freedom Riders features testimony from a fascinating cast of central characters: the Riders themselves, state and federal government officials, and journalists who witnessed the rides firsthand. The two-hour documentary comes to WTIU in May 2011, marking the 50th anniversary of the historic Rides. Filmmaker Stanley Nelson will also present a talk on Friday, April 1 at 3pm at the IU Cinema as part of the Jorgensen Lecture Series.

Through his tireless advocacy and his writings, John Muir almost single-handedly preserved the Yosemite Valley of California and was the force behind the creation of the National Park Service. Filmed throughout the majestic landscapes in which Muir traveled, this documentary places our nation’s most important wilderness assets in a cultural and social context. Muir’s story could not be a timelier reminder of America’s unique and, ultimately, threatened eco-systems.

Stonewall Uprising: American Experience When the gay bar Stonewall Inn was raided in 1969, gay men and women did something they had not done before: they fought back. As told in Stonewall Uprising by those present, from drag queens to a former New York mayor, the streets of New York erupted into violent protests and street demonstrations, announcing that the gay rights movement had arrived.

Ken Burns: The Civil War
Simply Murder - 1863 (4/5) Their names are etched forever in history— Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Vicksburg— some of the Civil War’s stormiest battlegrounds. While life in the South becomes more desperate, Northern opposition to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation also grows. The combat spearheaded by Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee brings the war to a fever pitch.
Sunday-Thursday, April 3-7 at 8pm On the 150th anniversary of the beginning of America’s Civil War, PBS will re-broadcast Ken Burns’s entire landmark 1990 series. Burns’s epic documentary brings to life America’s most destructive—and defining—conflict. The Civil War is the saga of celebrated generals and ordinary soldiers, a heroic and transcendent president and a country that had to divide itself in two in order to become one.

The Universe of Battle - 1863 (4/5)
President Lincoln and General McClellan confer at Antietam on October 4, 1862
The Cause - 1861 (4/3) The stage is set for war as the nation begins to tear apart. Opposition by the North to slavery in the South fuels a bitter debate, and the country wrestles with conflicts between the Union and States’ rights. Commanding center stage are towering figures—Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee.
The turning point of the war is reached at the legendary Battle of Gettysburg. While 150,000 men face death in Pennsylvania’s fields, the war spreads westward. As the Union drafts more soldiers, riots rage in New York, and African American troops join the fight. At Gettysburg’s cemetery, President Lincoln articulates the poignant hope “that government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth.”
Valley of the Shadow of Death - 1864 (4/6) In one month’s time, General Grant’s and General Lee’s armies suffer more casualties than in three years of war, but the impasse continues. A standoff at Petersburg and General Sherman’s campaign through Georgia push the death toll higher.
Most Hallowed Ground - 1864 (4/6) The presidential campaign of 1864 finds a nation truly divided against itself, and Lincoln seems doomed to defeat. The Union armies have stalled, and people have turned against the war. Unexpectedly, eleventh-hour victories sway the votes Lincoln’s way.
A Very Bloody Affair - 1862 (4/4)
War Is All Hell - 1865 (4/7)
The war to preserve the Union becomes a war to free the slaves, and political fights become as a fierce as those on the battlefield. The chains of slavery begin to crumble while the Confederacy struggles for recognition, and its resourceful army hands the Union critical defeats.
Sherman’s legendary “March to the Sea” portends the war’s end, searing the heartland of Georgia and the Carolinas. Key Southern cities fall under General Grant’s command and General Lee’s dramatic surrender finally unfolds.
Forever Free - 1862 (4/4)
In the bittersweet days after the war’s end, the Union’s triumph quickly turns to sorrow. Just five days after victory, President Lincoln dies by the hand of John Wilkes Booth. This final episode surveys the fates of the people who left their indelible marks on this remarkable era. And it leaves us with insights into the meaning of a conflict that helped make us the nation we are today.
Defeat hovers over the Union Army as President Lincoln prepares the landmark Emancipation Proclamation to free the slaves. While Lincoln waits for a victorious moment for this announcement, Union troops lose repeatedly. Finally with a victory at Antietam Creek, the bloodiest day of the war gives way to the dawn of emancipation.

T
he proposal to eliminate all federal funding for public broadcasting is not in the public interest. Over the last 40 years, public radio and television have immeasurably enriched the quality of American culture, education, and intellectual life. Moreover, they have achieved high standards of broadcast journalism. Since before the establishment of CPB, we have gratefully contributed to our local stations (WTIU and WFIU), and we shall continue to do so. Although we recognize the severity of the government’s fiscal crisis and support sound measures to reduce expenditures, we think that the complete cancellation of funding for such worthy enterprises does not serve “to promote the common welfare.” While some portion of the CPB’s annual budget should be scaled down—in relation to similar cuts in other government activities and programs—there is no warrant for putting an end to public broadcasting in its entirety. With such an admirable history of accomplishment, giving it all up would mark a deplorable act of bad judgment and bad policy. As a personal matter, my wife and I have been involved in our professional lives and as civic volunteers with public broadcasting. It should also be noted that we have been active for many years in the Republican Party and, in the main, support its policy goals. It is our strong belief that public broadcasting merits the sustaining subsidy of the federal government as a matter of proper stewardship and responsibility. —Kent Owen, WFIU/WTIU Member

On February 19, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution (H.R. 1), which eliminated federal funding for public broadcasting. Federal funding is critical for public broadcasting, allowing local public radio and television stations to provide educational services, in-depth news and public affairs programming, and world-class cultural content. Without the investment of this funding, many public radio and television stations across the country will be forced to go off the air. Please contact your Member of Congress and tell them what you think of public broadcasting and the proposed cuts. The future of public broadcasting is at stake. It’s important that your Member of Congress hears from you. Below is a letter sent to Representative Todd Young.

Spam-A-Lot Wednesday & Thursday, April 27 and 28th at 8pm IU Auditorium • www.iuauditorium.com The quest for the Holy Grail is on in Monty Python’s Spamalot, the hit Broadway musical that lovingly spoofs the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail—and also pokes fun at Broadway’s sometimesoverblown attempts at seriousness. This King Arthur tale includes the Knights of the Round Table and plenty of men in tights, but with some notable additions: up-to-the-minute pop culture references, Laker Girls cheerleaders, and a Killer Rabbit. The musical’s lyrics were written by Eric Idle, a member of the original Monty Python team, who co-wrote the music with John Du Prez. While Monty Python fans will be lining up for Spamalot, the show’s broad appeal was evidenced by its three 2005 Tony Awards including Best Musical and run of over 1,500 performances. This show is for anyone who appreciates silly, sarcastic dialogue and hilarious situations.

The saga continues at 165 Eaton Place with new characters upstairs and down in a three-part sequel to the much-loved Masterpiece series, more than three decades after its last episode on PBS. The story opens in 1936, six years after the Bellamy family moved out of 165 Eaton Place at the end of the original series. Recently inherited by young Sir Hallam Holland (Stoppard), the house has been long vacant and its considerable needs are taken in hand by Hallam’s vivacious wife, Agnes.
Actors Keeley Hawes and Ed Stoppard
Her first order of business is to hire servants, for which she retains Rose, the proprietor of a domestic employment agency, although Agnes is unaware of Rose’s previous association with 165. After lining up a butler, a cook, a housemaid, and other staff, Rose realizes she may be of no further use to the new family. Our story begins, just as it did thirty-odd years ago, with stories of the upper-class and workingclass intertwining in complex and interesting ways against a backdrop of world events—in this case, the abdication crisis of Edward VIII, the growing belligerence of Hitler and Mussolini on the continent, and the rise of the British Union of Fascists under Sir Oswald Mosley. Amid the triumphs, disasters, joys, and tears, it’s just like old times at 165 Eaton Place.
