WTIU’s The Friday Zone received a regional Emmy in the Children/Youth Program/ Special category for the episode “Under The Sea.” And the WTIU production Indiana State Parks: Treasures In Your Own Backyard was awarded a bronze award in the TV Nature/Wildlife category of the 31st Annual Telly Awards. The Friday Zone received its award at the 41st Annual Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy Awards, which took place at a banquet in Cleveland on June 19. The Great Lakes Chapter includes TV stations in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the episode, host Katie Sullivan gets scuba lessons from an expert and swims with dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo. Also, former host Holly Gregory demonstrates different eating methods used by whales. “It's an honor to be involved in a program like The Friday Zone, and to have worked with former host Katie Sullivan to achieve this Emmy,” said Bridget Siebert, Producer of Children's Programming for WTIU. “PBS is renowned for its children's programming, and The Friday Zone presents television that engages and informs viewers right here in Indiana. Knowing that others appreciate The Friday Zone is humbling.” Indiana State Parks: Treasures In Your Own Backyard showcases and celebrates Indiana state parks and introduces viewers to their vibrant natural beauty and the people who have dedicated their lives to preserving them for future generations. “I was inspired by the natural beauty in the parks and how their character changed from season to season,” said producer/ videographer Ron Prickel. “I think the final product shows how well the entire team worked together to create a truly inspirational documentary. It’s my hope that people will visit at least one, if not more of Indiana’s state parks because of this film.”

Home Office pathologist Reynard Mears asks UCOS to reopen the case of a young woman’s severed body found in woodland at the ancient site of Giston Mount in 1987. The corpse was never identified and there are very few clues to help them. But it is Lane’s encounter with a wild boar that leads them to an aristocratic breeder who may hold the key to the mystery.

Antarctica: Life on the Ice
WFIU-FM Radio Highlights
Sunday, August 15, 4 p.m. Reporter Glenn Zorpette takes us behind the scenes to see what its like to live in Antarctica year round. He had unrestricted access to U.S. bases and facilities, where he interviewed scientists, bakers, bureaucrats, environmentalists, survival trainers, helicopter pilots, painters, a bartender, and a masseuse. He captured the bleating of 3,500 Adelie penguins in the world’s southernmost rookery, the gentle trickling of water from a 4,000-year-old glacier, and the throaty roar of a drill boring a mile-and-a-half hole in polar ice. He spent a night at the South Pole, interviewed field scientists in one of Antarctica’s ice-free “Dry Valleys,” and visited the century-old expedition huts of explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton.
Carole King & James Taylor: You’ve Got a Friend Sunday, August 22, 4 p.m. This program explores the long musical friendship of Carole King and James Taylor from the early days of performing at the famous Troubadour Club in West Hollywood to their James Taylor & Carole King extensive 2010 U.S. Tour. It includes live recordings of King and Taylor in 1971 and highlights from the 2007 Troubadour reunion concert. There are interviews with King and Taylor, plus comments from friends and colleagues including Graham Nash, David Wild, Lou Adler and Robert Hilburn about the duo’s history, craft, and influence. The program includes many King and Taylor favorites including, “So Far Away,” “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Up On the Roof,” “Child of Mine, “Fire and Rain,” “Jazzman,” “It’s Too Late,” and of course, “You’ve Got a Friend.”

Our Town: Terre Haute Monday, August 30 at 8pm Terre Haute, Indiana—known as the “Queen City of the Wabash”—will be the focus of the newest WTIU Our Town production. The documentary takes you on a journey through the history of Terre Haute—a truly American tale full of inspiring triumphs, dramatic setbacks, and surprising twists and turns. Our Town: Terre Haute will explore the history of the city from its origins as a trading post on the banks of the Wabash River in the early 1800s to today’s modern, thriving city with a fastdeveloping Riverscape Project. Did you know, for example, that during the early years of the 20th century Terre Haute had some of the world’s largest distilleries and was famous as a center of glass manufacturing? The city’s expert glass workers even played a central role in the success of Coca-Cola, designing the soft drink company’s iconic bottle in 1913. As the United States navigated the oftenturbulent, fast-paced decades of the 20th century, so too did Terre Haute forge ahead, meeting challenges head on. Our Town: Terre Haute explores the city’s rapid growth during the “Roaring ’20s,” its struggles during the Great Depression of the 1930s, its patriotic fervor and sacrifice during World War II, and development as

a center of higher education, healthcare, and diverse industries in the post-war decades. Along the way you’ll meet colorful and fascinating characters, including visionary businessmen Chauncey Rose and Tony Hulman, acclaimed songwriter Paul Dresser, poet Max Ehrmann, and many others. You’ll discover Terre Haute’s surprising number of esteemed institutions of higher learning, including Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. And you’ll get a taste of the city’s impressive array of arts and vibrant festivals that instill Terre Haute with a lively and forward-looking spirit. Our Town: Terre Haute is made possible in part by: • The Electrical Workers of the IBEW Local 725 and the National Electrical Contractors Association • The Hollie and Anna Oakley Foundation • The Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau • The Wabash Valley Community Foundation
