February Highlights Tuesday, February 8, 8pm, Sunday, February 13, 4pm Local kids’ programs shaped the childhoods of millions of American children in the early years of television. Performers such as Willard Scott and William Shatner honed their skills performing on live TV with small budgets and little support. One early talent, Stan Freberg, got off the bus in the middle of Hollywood, became a cartoon voice talent and created Time for Beany. Freberg’s story is told along with the stories of legendary Muppets creator Jim Henson, actor Chuck McCann, Larry Harmon, and Nancy Claster, who developed the Baltimore kids’ series Romper Room—the first franchised show in television history.

NOVA scienceNOW

Wednesdays at 8pm Hosted by renowned astrophysicist, author and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil deGrasse Tyson, NOVA scienceNOW covers four timely science and technology stories per one-hour episode. Each episode of the upcoming season of NOVA scienceNOW explores one of six “big” science questions: can we live forever?; how smart are animals?; where did I come from?; how does the brain work?; what’s the next big thing?; and can we live in space?

Irene Pepperberg (r) does training with Griffin, the parrot, and Anna Schwartz, a graduate student.

Sunday, February 13, 20, and 27 at 9pm A footloose writer takes part in the tumultuous 20th century, while getting to know Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. He also falls in love— over and over. Based on William Boyd’s bestselling novel, the three-part series stars Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen, and Sam Claflin, each playing the hero in a different stage of his eventful life. Also starring are Haley Atwell, Kim Cattrall, Gillian Anderson, Tom Hollander, and Ed Stoppard.

Afropop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange

Sundays at 11pm WTIU celebrates Black History Month with numerous specials, including this innovative documentary on contemporary life, art and pop culture in the African Diaspora. Four films introduce powerful stories: African boxers journey across the Atlantic to match their skills against the best in the world; a teenage girl travels to Ghana and an expatriate from Sierra Leone returns to his homeland, each hoping to dispel prevailing myths about the two countries; and, Hurricane Katrina victims find themselves refugees in their own country. Black History Month Programming

For Gold and Glory

A Conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Courtesy of The HistoryMakers

Thursday, February 3 at 10pm This program provides an interesting and rarelyseen inside look into the life and career of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. A native of West Virginia, Gates returns to his birth state to share his story with CNN White House Correspondent Suzanne Malveaux. A Conversation with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. provides a wonderful and insightful look into the life of this history “change agent.”

Suzanne Malveaux and Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans Sunday, February 6 at 2pm New Orleans newspaperman Lolis Eric Elie takes viewers on a tour of the city and his storied neighborhood. Arguably the oldest black neighborhood in America and the birthplace of jazz, Faubourg Treme was home to the largest community of free black people in the Deep South during slavery and a hotbed of political ferment. This program is a tale of heartbreak, hope and resiliency—all set to a soundtrack of New Orleans’ famous music.

Independent Lens: When I Rise

Tuesday, February 8 at 10pm When I Rise profiles Barbara Smith Conrad, a gifted University of Texas music student, who finds herself at the epicenter of racial controversy, struggling against the odds and ultimately ascending to the heights of international opera.

Thursday, February 10 at 10pm This documentary retraces a little-known chapter in American sports history: the heritage of the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes, an auto racing circuit for African-American drivers and mechanics, set against a backdrop of racial unrest in America during the 1920s and ’30s. The program not only tells of the racial barriers these intrepid sportsmen had to overcome, but also examines the efforts of many whites and blacks to come together, despite the social pressures of the day, to create the largest single sporting event ever held for African Americans.

Marines of Montford Point: Fighting for Freedom

Sunday, February 13 at 3pm This program profiles the first African Americans recruits in the United States Marine Corps, beginning with their experiences at Montford Point Base, a segregated boot camp in the heart of the Jim Crow South. During the film, Montford Point veterans recount the racism they faced both within and outside the military and reminisce about the rigors of basic training, the harsh conditions of the barracks and the perils of combat.

Independent Lens: Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene

Tuesday, February 15 at 10pm America’s original shock-jock, Petey Greene overcame poverty, drug addiction and prison time to “tell it like it is,” shocking and entertaining everyone from the ghetto to the White House. Narrated by Don Cheadle, this program looks at how his explosive language and brash style unsettled the establishment as he battled both the system and his own demons on a journey to becoming a leading activist during some of the most tumultuous years in recent history.

Indiana Legends: George Taliaferro Thursday, February 17 at 10pm This documentary chronicles George Taliaferro’s rise to stardom, from his emergence as a high school phenom in Gary, Indiana to an All-Pro career in the NFL in the 1950s. Indiana Legends: George Taliaferro is about race, sports and the ability of one man to excel in athletics and in life, despite the bigotry meant to hold him down.

NOVA’s Smartest Night on Television

Rev. Ernest D. Butler: Rebel with a Cause

On Wednesday, February 9 from 8 to 11pm, NOVA brings you three hours of back-to-back science premieres in a specially themed primetime programming event “The Smartest Night on Television.” The evening includes:

Pact

Sunday, February 20 3:30pm Inspired by The New York Times bestseller, this documentary centers on the gritty and provocative true-life story of three African-American friends from Newark, New Jersey, who overcame poverty, criminal records and drug-addicted parents in their quest for a medical degree. Today, physicians Sampson Davis and Rameck Hunt, and dentist George Jenkins, share their success stories in the hopes of motivating inner-city kids to avoid gangs and drugs and lift themselves out of poverty through education.

Blacking Up: Hip-Hop’s Remix of Race and Identity

Thursday, February 24 10pm Blacking Up explores racial identity through the lens of hip-hop music and culture. The film focuses in particular on the tensions that surround white identification with hip-hop. Popularly referred to by derogatory terms such as “wannabe” or “wigger,” the white person who identifies with hip-hop often invokes heated responses. For some, it is an example of cultural progress— a movement toward a color-blind America. For others, it is just another case of cultural theft and mockery—a repetition of a racist past.

8 pm NOVA scienceNOW: How Smart Are Animals? offers remarkable findings and footage of animal intelligence and the surprising behavior of several species being revealed by researchers. 9 pm NOVA: Making Stuff Smarter, the fourth and final installment of NOVA’s fascinating series on materials science, spotlights the latest developments in “smart materials” that can truly think, respond, react—many inspired by nature and containing the potential to transform our lives.

Thursday, February 17 at 10:30pm This documentary tells the story of Reverend Butler, his family, and his efforts as a grass roots civil rights activist. The major segment of the video concentrates on his years in Bloomington, as pastor of the Second Baptist Church. It describes the conditions he confronted on arrival in Bloomington in 1959, and examines his efforts to open up employment and housing opportunities for African Americans in Reverend Butler Bloomington. Attention is also given to his daily struggle to improve the lives of the members of his church and the wider community.

Host David Pogue looks into the growing number of smart materials that can respond, change & even learn.

10 pm NOVA special presentation: Smartest Machine on Earth: Can a Computer Win on Jeopardy? examines the technological feats and hurdles necessary to develop “Watson,” the challenges artificial intelligence researchers face in mimicking the human thought process, and the potential applications for the future. This special premieres five days before “Watson” is set to make television history on Jeopardy!—competing for a grand prize of $1 million against Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, two of the show’s most successful and celebrated contestants of all time—in matches airing over three consecutive days on February 14, 15 and 16, 2011 (check local listings for Jeopardy! times and broadcasters).

Ruby Elzy: Black Diva of the Thirties

W IU wfiu.org

Sunday, February 6, 4 pm Ruby Elzy was one of George Gershwin’s handpicked leads for the original production of Porgy and Bess. Raised in the small Mississippi town of Pontotoc, her voice carried her to Ohio State University, Julliard, Broadway, and nationwide concerts. Tragically, Elzy’s life would end before she would have been one of the first black artists to appear in grand opera had she lived beyond her 35 years. This program is Ruby Elzy based upon the book Black Diva of the Thirties: The Life of Ruby Elzy, by David E. Weaver. We’ll hear Ruby Elzy perform “My Man’s Gone Now,” “I Know the Lord,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” “Summertime,” “St. Louis Blues,” and “Elsa’s Dream.”

William’s Leap for Freedom

11:00 Tavis Smiley ★ 11:30 Journal ★

Sunday, February 13, 4 pm

24 Thursday

William’s Leap for Freedom is an original radio play based on the life of freed slave William Wells Brown, who was born a slave in 1814. Throughout his lifetime, Brown was a fugitive slave, a conductor on the Underground Railroad, an abolitionist, an anti-slavery lecturer, an historian, a medical doctor, and a poet. The program dramatizes portions of his play The Escape or Leap for Freedom, as it relates to the tale of three slaves, Cato, Glen, and William Wells Brown Melinda. Brown’s plays emphasized that all Americans, northern and southern, participated in deceptions necessary to support the system of slavery. He consistently emphasized that blacks should use wit and trickery to fight against and survive their oppression, not heroic confrontation.

Sunday, February 13 at 10:30pm; Wednesday, February 16 at 1pm Blogging. Texting. Smart Phones. Gaming. Social Networks. YouTube. More than just diversions for America’s kids, these technologies are becoming intrinsic to how they live…and learn. Increasingly present in kids’ formal and informal educational settings, digital media is as common as pencils and notebooks were to their parents. Yet in many American classrooms and homes, these high-tech tools are severely limited or forbidden. Teachers and parents wonder: What are students doing with these technologies? Digital Media: New Learners of the 21st Century addresses this vital question, taking viewers to the frontlines of what is rapidly becoming an education revolution. Targeted at parents, teachers and anyone concerned about education in America, this film explores how exceptional instructors are increasingly using digital media and interactive practices to ignite their students’ curiosity and ingenuity, to help them become civically engaged, to allow them to collaborate with peers worldwide and to empower them to direct their own learning. From classroom to library to museum to mall, students are claiming digital media as a means of connecting, communicating, creating and learning. Digital Media: New Learners of the 21st Century explores this burgeoning phenomenon, interpreting its importance and offering parents, teachers and everyone who cares about kids a window into 21st century education.
