Did you Know? Some believe that WTIU only serves Monroe County, but this is not the case. In our most recent membership campaign (March 2011) 58% of pledges came from outside of Bloomington. Here are some comments from viewers from around the state: “We enjoy PBS programming which is educational, informative, and entertaining. Our TV is seldom on any channel other than PBS.” Solsberry, IN “I’m distressed that federal funding for public broadcasting might be cut. What would we do without NewsHour.” Freetown, IN “All we watch is WTIU.” Springville, IN “It’s the best station on TV!” Greencastle, IN “I like learning something if I’m going to watch television. Whether it’s the latest research or technology on NOVA, the history and customs of a country I may someday visit on Rick Steves’ Europe, or how to improve my culinary skills on Create, there’s always something new on WTIU.” Solsberry, IN “Unbaised and in-depth news reporting, outstanding, educational programming, great dramatic programming. If we could only receive one TV Channel, it would be PBS.” Martinsville, IN “Most of the TV I watch is on public TV.” Brazil, IN

4 / www.wtiu.indiana.edu

“We have supported Public Broadcasting since it was called Educational TV in the late 1960s. I cannot conceive of a better way to spend tax dollars. We love the music, the drama, the nature shows, and the programs that educate and inform.” Terre Haute, IN “I love the Lawrence Welk Show!” Bedford, IN “I love the programming. I particularly enjoy the travel shows and some of the Create shows. Diane Bish’s shows are wonderful too. Viva Public TV!” Carmel, IN “I’m a fan of Britcoms. Please air more!” Attica, IN “I love that the Create channel repeats itself. I work nightshift and I’m often ready to watch those shows in the early morning or just at odd times where there are no other people watching TV.” Nashville, IN “I love the programs—especially the British movies and series.” Mitchell, IN “I do enjoy the programming.” Indianapolis, IN “I appreciate the wide range of programming from news and Charlie Rose to Nature and NOVA. I love all of it and I trust the truth of the news and other presentations.” Edinburgh, IN “I love the unique programs that you bring for all generations.” Paoli, IN

Philanthropy Made Easy Any of us, even those of us with modest means, can have the pleasure of becoming a philanthropist and leaving a legacy. The key lies in smart planning. While retirement plans like TIAA-CREF, traditional IRAs or 401(k)s are excellent vehicles to grow wealth for retirement, they are not effective at transferring it to heirs. And, if we don’t deplete our retirement funds during our lives, the taxation on them can be surprisingly high. Up to 75% can be lost to taxes before they are inherited by (non-spousal) heirs. Not the generous gift you may have intended for your beneficiaries! Charitable giving can offer an attractive alternative to having your retirement chewed up by taxes. Consider designating your retirement plan balance to worthwhile causes—a nonprofit you value—and redirect assets with less tax liability to your family and friends. Making a gift in this manner is simple and does not require a lawyer! All you have to do is contact the retirement plan administrator and ask for a beneficiary form. There are multiple creative options! One example would be to choose 5 different charities and designate 20% of your retirement savings to each organization, escaping taxes. We do hope that you will consider including WTIU in your plans. For more information on ways to make a gift, call or email Nancy Krueger at (812) 855-2935 or nkrueger@indiana.edu.

P.O.V. Biblioburro This is the story of a librarian—and a library—like no other. Luis Soriano spends his weekends bringing precious books, via two hard-working donkeys, to the children of a poor and violence-ridden province in Colombia. As Soriano braves armed bands, drug traffickers, snakes and heat, his library-on-hooves carries an inspirational message about education and a better future for his country.

Sunday, July 24 at 8 p.m. In this episode of Radiolab, hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich steer us through a series of stories about getting lost, asking how our brains and our hearts help us find our way back home. We hear about a little girl who gets lost in front of her own house, raising questions about how we find our way in the world. We meet a woman who has spent her entire life getting lost, and find out how our brains make maps of the world around us. We visit a military base in New Jersey to learn about some amazing feats of navigational wizardry, and are introduced to a group of people in Australia with impeccable orientation. Finally, we turn to a different kind of lost and found: a love story about running into a terrifying, and unexpected, fork in the road.

Sunday, July 17, 24, and 31 at 9pm What does an honest cop do when his bosses are on the side of the lawbreakers? Outwitting prosecutors, politicians, mobsters, and run-ofthe-mill kidnappers and killers, Detective Aurelio Zen brings justice to modern-day Italy, whether the authorities want it or not, on “Zen,” a trio of spellbinding cases based on the bestselling novels by Michael Dibdin.

Vendetta Sunday, July 17 at 9pm A killer is on a vendetta-fuelled rampage against those who wrongly imprisoned him, including a cop who had almost nothing to do with it: Zen. But Zen is too busy dealing with another crime to notice that he’s on the psychopath’s hit list. With so many distractions, can Zen solve the murder while keeping his job, staying alive, and getting to know Tania better?

Cabal Sunday, July 24 at 9pm A disgraced aristocrat jumps off a bridge. Or was he pushed? As usual, Zen gets mixed signals from his scheming bosses: the Ministry of Justice wants

a ruling of suicide, while a powerful and beautiful female prosecutor hints that Zen had better start looking for the murderer. The plot thickens when it appears that the victim was trying to inform on a previously unknown group called the Cabal, with conspirators at the highest levels of Italian society.

Ratking Sunday, July 31 at 9pm When a wealthy industrialist and political party donor is kidnapped, the Ministry of Justice wants Zen to get the hostage back alive at any cost. But these kidnappers don’t seem to be playing by the rules, since they kill the lawyer who shows up with a ransom payment from the family. Even worse, Zen has a tyrannical new boss who is a stickler for regulations, including the one against workplace romances, jeopardizing the detective’s burgeoning affair with Tania.
