Celebrate St. Patrick’s day a little early this year and see the band that popularized Irish traditional music. Since its debut album in 1962, the Irish band The Chieftains has brought Irish music to the masses, seamlessly melding traditional Celtic music with the modern for a sound like no other. Band founder Paddy Moloney initially brought together masters of fiddle, flute, tin whistle, and bodhran to form the group, later adding harp and vocals. Throughout the band’s nearly 50 years together, The Chieftains has been involved in events both intimate and historic. The group has collaborated with symphonies, folk singers, bluegrass musicians, rockers, pop singers, and of course, traditional Irish musicians, resulting in six Grammy Award-winning albums, 18 Grammy nominations, and an Emmy Award, among other honors.

You Could Win an iPod Touch! Our March Membership campaign starts on March 5th and we’re looking forward to offering you many new and exciting programs—as well as some classics. While many viewers continue to enjoy WTIU on their television sets daily, many others are using the Internet and various modern technologies to enhance their WTIU viewing experiences. We’re in the process of redesigning our website to better meet the needs of all of our viewers. One of the features we’re most excited to offer is what’s being called “Hulu for Public Broadcasting.” This new video portal (COVE) contains clips and full-length videos from both national and local programs. This player also offers options to easily share these videos on social sites like Facebook. PBS recently launched its own app, which is receiving rave review across the Internet. With this app you can watch the most popular current PBS programs free on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch with minimal interruption. Explore hundreds of videos from various new programs and from the rich PBS archives. Additional features include the ability to create reminders for favorite programs; see what’s airing on WTIU’s four digital channels; and share videos with friends on Facebook, Twitter and E-mail. Other great PBS apps include the PBS NewsHour app, and the Antiques Roadshow app. And for the kids in your life: PBS kids Photo Factory app, Sprout player app, Martha Speaks and Dinosaur Train Eggspress app.

Support WTIU for a Chance at an iPod Touch! When you make your pledge of support online from Tuesday, March 1 through Friday, March 4, you could win a 32GB iPod Touch (courtesy of Best Buy of Bloomington). This iPod has plenty of space to store your favorite music and movies, and enables you to access the iPhone apps that are so popular, without requiring an annual phone contract or data plan. No contribution is needed to enter, but we hope you’ll choose to support WTIU and the programs you enjoy. To quote Reading Rainbow, “You don’t have to take our word for it. . .” “Awesome and free. PBS is a shining beacon in the media world.” Andrew “Full episode streaming, local listings, polished interface. What more could you ask for? This app warrants a donation to PBS!” SpriteMV “Love the app! Wonderfully put together and a joy to navigate. It’s so nice to see that someone actually though out how people will interact with their app and actually spent time making a smooth experience.” DD0

Red Green’s Wit & Wisdom Tour Coming to Bloomington! If you’re a fan of the Red Green Show on WTIU, then you know that Red is known for his funny stories and candid opinions on just about everything. Now is your chance to see him in person. Red Green (Steve Smith) will bring his one-man Wit & Wisdom Tour to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington on Saturday, April 16 at 8pm where he’ll impart some manly advice, recount his adventures with the clan at Possum Lodge, and offer tips for the latest and greatest uses for the handyman’s secret weapon—duct tape. Tickets are $45 each and the only way to get them is by calling (812) 855-6114 or by making your pledge online at wtiu.indiana.edu. The Red Green Show ran from 1990 to 2006 and featured 300 episodes. After two seasons, the show was a cult hit, but the station had run out of funds for producing it and The Red Green Show was cancelled. It wasn’t until the news of the program’s supposed end was announced that Smith learned just how popular his “summer job” had become. “I started to get upwards to a thousand letters a day pleading for me In celebration of Red’s visit to do whatever I could to keep Red to Bloomington, WTIU will Green on the air,” he remembers. “Well, air several Red Green specials I’ve always thought that Canadians and this month. Red Green Test Americans have a lot in common. And, Drive airs on Saturday 3/5 we had already found an audience in at 8:30pm. On Wednesday, Canada. That’s not always easy, since March 9 at 10pm, we’ll air Canadians are often biased against three Red Green episodes, and Canadian shows, because we’ve done Saturday, March 19 we air some pretty horrible stuff on TV up Red Green’s Duct Tape Forever. here over the years.” “So, while I was watching Monday Night Football, I started to think that in those stadiums filled with 70,000 people, ‘I bet there’s a couple of Red Green fans in there—the type of guys who figure they can fix a microwave by themselves to save a couple bucks. I contacted some public television stations and we started small with five or six. But now, the show is on nearly 100 stations in the U.S., including WTIU in Bloomington.” For every fan of the show who has viewed a familiar, too-closeto-home moment in Red and the cast’s weekly mishaps, it should be refreshing to learn that Smith wasn’t simply making fun of “handymen” in the show’s weekly segments—much of the material was inspired by his own life. “I really am embarrassed to admit that a lot of the show’s material has come out of what I guess you’d call personal experiences,” Smith says, laughing. “When I was younger, I was always the kind of guy who wanted to figure out how to put things together in my own way.” = WTIU / Indiana University-related programs

8:30 Red Green’s Duct Tape Forever

The Courthouse Girls of Farmland

Sunday, March 20 at 11pm Courthouse Girls of Farmland is a story about small towns everywhere told from the viewpoint of one Indiana community and the people who make up its fabric. This intricate tapestry is woven with diversity, conflicting values, and a spirit determined to foster change. Highlighting the story are seven senior women who got up from their bridge club table to make a bold statement about historic preservation and fueled a firestorm of controversy. Residents of the small town of Farmland, Indiana, a community known for its innovative (some might say wacky) fundraisers and promotional campaigns that have helped restore the old town’s presence and economy, the Courthouse Girls decided they wouldn’t let the region’s historic courthouse face the wrecking ball without putting up a fight. Backed by Historic Farmland USA, these seven bridge club members (aged 77 to 94 at the time) withstood criticism from fellow church members and long-time friends to pose “suggestively” for a calendar and became celebrated centerfolds in the name of historic preservation. The women not only helped change the course of rural county politics, they set an example that our elderly need not go quietly into the long good night. They were an inspiration for old and young alike, generating cheers along with jeers. Most of all, their courageous action proved the old have beauty and value, whether it’s in historic buildings or in the people who have called that community home for nearly a century.

11:00 Tavis Smiley ★ 11:30 Journal ★

Last year marked the 90th anniversary of the date that women got the right to vote. Votes for Women explores the progressive movement of the early 1900s, the role that women were expected to play in Victorian times, how women organized to get the right to vote, and the techniques they used to get it. By weaving together oral histories of women who had firsthand experience in these events, excerpts from letters and speeches, comments from sociologists and historians, and music from the suffrage movement, Votes for Women reminds us that the rights that we take for granted were not always there.

Hosted by brewing expert Anita Johnson, Hoosier Hospitality: Craft Beer is a travelogue and informative television documentary on craft beer and micro-brewing in Indiana. Viewers go on an arm-chair journey throughout Indiana to meet unique individuals and hear their stories behind craft beer and the art of brewing. We’ll take you to unique micro-breweries, pubs, tasting festivals, and even include a handful of insightful lessons for your personal education on all things craft beer. Indiana has a rich heritage of breweries dating back to 1816. Since the late 1980s, there has been a resurgence of the micro-brewing business in Indiana and today there are more than 30 craft beer breweries in Indiana. Hoosier Hospitality: Craft Beer will include unique behind-the-scenes visits to three leading breweries: Broad Ripple Brewing, Co. in Indianapolis; Three Floyds Brewing Company in Munster; and Upland Brewing Company in Bloomington. The program will also include visits to other micro-breweries, clubs, festivals, events, and gatherings of craft beer enthusiasts.
