WTIU Sponsors David Sedaris at the IU Auditorium

Monroe County Humane Association Walk for the Animals

Wednesday, October 6 at 8pm

Sunday, October 3, 1-4pm Karst Farm Park

David Sedaris

The king of self-deprecating comedy, David Sedaris will bring his signature social satire back to IU Auditorium this month. Sedaris uses his words to paint pictures of situations both familiar and ridiculous, mining everything from his upbringing in an eccentric Greek family to his odd jobs in the years before he started getting paid to write. He is a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and can be heard reading his original radio pieces on NPR’s This American Life in a sarcastic, slightly nasal voice that’s hard to hear without breaking into a smile. Among his best-selling books are Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice and the personal essay collections Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and When You Are Engulfed in Flames. He was Time magazine’s “Humorist of the Year” in 2001 and has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album.

WTIU is a Media Sponsor of the 15th annual Monroe County Humane Association Walk for the Animals, a long-time community favorite event celebrating all animals and raising funds for the Monroe County Humane Association. The Walk is the largest and longest-standing animal welfare event in Monroe and surrounding counties, supporting MCHA’s mission to lead, advocate and educate for animal welfare. Registration is $10 per person. Kids 12 and under free.

Some of the activities at this year’s Walk for the Animals: • Play in the Off-Leash Play Area and Canine Water Park. • Test your canine’s skills at the Doggie Dash Obstacle Course. • Agility Try-it Area. • Doggie Games, demos, give-aways. • Kids Carnival—Face painting, balloon animals and more! • Booths from our sponsors and checkout other animal welfare groups at the Animal Fair and find great buys at the Marketplace with partial proceeds to benefit the MCHA. • As always, visit with the adoptable animals from the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter.

Wednesdays, October 6, 13, and 20 at 8pm “How better to understand 20th century American history and culture than through its popular music? Music that, by all accounts, is some of the finest ever written, with beautiful melodies and intelligent, witty lyrics. The songs Americans have loved for decades provide a musical snapshot of our shared culture.” —Producer/Director Amber Edwards Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook embarks on a dynamic road trip through the glorious history of American song by the acclaimed musician and five-time Grammy®nominated vocalist. Viewers accompany Feinstein on-stage and backstage, hear him interpret great standards, listen in on personal stories about the songwriters and entertainers he’s known and worked with, and join him on his quest to find and preserve rare treasures Michael Feinstein of classic American music. “When I first moved to Los Angeles,” Feinstein says in the show, “I discovered that movie studios would throw away archives, music publishers would get rid of old arrangements, manuscripts would be discarded, and complete orchestrations for shows would be tossed out. Our musical heritage was literally disappearing because people didn’t understand it was valuable to save it.” Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook chronicles Feinstein’s lifelong mission to keep the Great American Songbook alive, as he preserves and passes along the lyrics and melodies of songwriters like George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and Rodgers and Hart, all while performing more than 150 shows a year across the country, digging deep into the artistry of performers like Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, and Nat King Cole, illuminating what makes them—and the songs—so timeless.

Masterpiece Mystery! Sherlock Sundays, October 24, 31, and November 7 at 9pm

Blowing away the fog of the Victorian era, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective Sherlock Holmes enters the 21st century in a thrilling contemporary version. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, The Last Enemy) in the Benedict Cumberbatch as title role, Sherlock premieres with Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson three criminally clever whodunits beginning Sunday, October 24th at 9pm. Created by the celebrated story-telling team of Steven Moffat (Doctor Who, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss (Doctor Who, The League of Gentlemen), Sherlock co-stars Martin Freeman (The Office UK, Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy) as Dr. John Watson, Holmes’s best (and only!) friend. Just as in the Conan Doyle original, John is a retired army doctor, wounded during service in Afghanistan. A chance encounter brings him into the strange and thrilling world of Sherlock Holmes whose cases he begins to write up—as online blogs. The UK press greeted the new Sherlock with open arms and rave reviews: “Sherlock is a triumph, witty and knowing, without ever undercutting the flair and dazzle of the original,” wrote The Independent. “Meet the new Sherlock,” announced The Daily Telegraph, “an electrifying sociopath.” And The Times (London) proclaimed, “Sherlock makes every other crime caper on television look thin.” This is a brand new Sherlock made by people who love the original stories, so each adventure is packed full of details, places, idiosyncrasies, plot elements, and phrases, each with its own 21st century twist.

Sunday, October 3, 4 p.m. Teachers are at the center of education debate today because a huge body of research has proven what may seem obvious: Students who get the best teachers learn more. Students Teacher working with a student at who get the worst Brown Academy in Chattanooga, TN teachers fall behind. Politicians and education reformers are calling for big changes in how teachers are trained and evaluated, and in the way teachers are hired and fired too. But teacher’s unions are pushing back. They say teachers alone can’t overcome the achievement failures, and they say teachers are being blamed for much larger problems in America’s struggling schools. In this American RadioWorks special, we dig into the debate about teachers, and about the research that’s fueling it.

God In America Monday through Wednesday, October 11-13 at 9pm Since the days when the Puritan “city on a hill” beckoned on the horizon of the New World, religious faith and belief have forged America’s ideals, molded its identity and shaped its sense of mission at home and abroad. For the first time on television, God in America explores the tumultuous 400-year history of the intersection of religion and public life in America, from the first European settlements to the 2008 presidential election. A co-production of American Experience and Frontline, this sixhour series examines how religious dissidents helped shape the American concept of religious liberty and the controversial evolution of that ideal in the nation’s courts and political arena; how religious freedom and waves of new immigrants and religious revivals fueled competition in the religious marketplace; how movements for social reform—from abolition to civil rights—galvanized men and women to put their faith into political action; and how religious faith influenced conflicts from the American Revolution to the Cold War. “The American story cannot be fully understood without understanding the country’s religious history,” says series executive producer Michael

Sullivan. “By examining that history, God in America will offer viewers a fresh, revealing and challenging portrait of the country.” As God in America unfolds, it reveals the deep roots of American religious identity in the universal quest for liberty and individualism— ideas that played out in the unlikely political union between Thomas Jefferson and defiant Baptists to oppose the established church in Virginia and that were later embraced by freewheeling Methodists and maverick Presbyterians. Catholic and Jewish immigrants battled for religious liberty and expanded its meaning. In their quest for social reform, movements as different as civil rights and the religious right found authority and energy in their religious faith. The fight to define religious liberty fueled struggles between America’s secular and religious cultures on issues from evolution to school prayer, and American individualism and the country’s experiment in religious liberty were the engine that made America the most religiously diverse nation on earth.
