The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! Weekdays at 7am, beginning Tuesday, September 7 Voiced by award-winning actor Martin Short, Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat guides friends Sally and Nick—with a little help from the Fish, Thing 1 and Thing 2—on fun-filled adventures where they make natural-science discoveries, from how bees make honey to why owls sleep during the day. Filled with both adventure and silliness, The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That!, based on the acclaimed The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library book series, will appeal to preschoolers’ natural curiosity, and engage them in the process of scientific exploration and discovery. The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than about other subjects. The series supports young children’s science learning by introducing scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for kindergarten and first grade science curriculum—all in whimsical style. A team of science and early childhood experts developed the curriculum for the first season’s 40 episodes, each of which begins with a question posed by Sally or Nick. Although the Cat knows a lot of things, his insatiable curiosity to learn more about the world leads to adventures with Sally and Nick in his one-of-a-kind Thinga-ma-jigger, a marvelously Seuss-ian contraption that sprouts wings, pontoons, booster rockets, skis, and just

about anything else needed to find the answer. The inquisitive gang travels to the bottom of the sea to observe giant sea worms, zips to the rain forest to visit animals living in Kapok trees, and shrinks to bee-size to visit a hive and learn how honey is made. Guided by the Cat, the kids figure things out by observing, collecting and managing clues, making connections, constructing and evaluating theories, and having discussions—all in a preschool-appropriate manner.

American soprano Renée Fleming travels to Russia for a special visit to St. Petersburg with her friend and frequent co-star, Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovky. St. Petersburg is a city of palaces, and Fleming and Hvorostovsky take in three of the most memorable, all of them on the water. First is the Winter Palace, also known as the Hermitage, built with one entire facade facing the Neva River. Next on the tour is the Yusupov Palace (the scene of Rasputin’s murder); and lastly, the Peterhof with its fantastic fountains on the Gulf of Finland. In each location, they sing arias and duets by Verdi and Tchaikovsky, as well as the Russian songs of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

IU Student Documentaries Premiere

WTIU Program Manager Brent Molnar works each semester with an Indiana University Telecommunications class taught by Professor Ron Osgood to develop 30-minute documentaries to air on WTIU. The three programs produced by the class in the Spring 2010 semester premiere in September on WTIU. The documentaries are:

Interstate 69: Under Construction Friday, September 10 at 10:30 The expansion of Interstate 69 has been a heated issue since its inception. On one side, the government is trying to improve the Interstate system and bring traffic to slowing economies. On the other side, you have people who are being pushed to sell their land, and concerns that the new expansion will destroy the dynamics of small towns. As a result, the expansion of I-69 has been heavily debated in Indiana for over 10 years. This documentary follows the history of Interstate 69, and the local opinions and stories which surround it.

Love 2.0: A Search for Love in the Internet Age Friday, September 17 at 10:30 Love 2.0 is a light-hearted look into the intersection of love and the internet. The film asks users and academics why online dating and friendship sites are so popular. What emotionally drives and inspires users to post their innermost thoughts and desires on a world stage? And, if actual connections are ever made? From confessions of unexpected love, to offline meeting disasters, this project delves into individual stories and motivations, as it seeks to reveal the beating heart of those who turn to the internet for a chance at love.

Four-Wheeled Fascination: A Roller Derby Story Friday, September 24 at 10:30 From big personalities, to the fans who love them, find out why Roller Derby is experiencing a resurgence. Who are some of the people who participate, why do they participate, what is the history of this sport and how has it changed? Plus, discover how it has evolved since its early beginnings in the 1930s.

She held my two hands and said, ‘Tell people what is happening here. Tell them we will all be slaughtered. Tell them we need help.’ And I promised Halima that I would do my best to do that.” Mia Farrow has starred in more than forty movies, including Rosemary’s Baby and Hannah and Her Sisters. The Tenth Inning Thousands of bats, three home run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series Baseball. The Tenth Inning tells the tumultuous story of America’s national pastime from the early 1990s to the present day, introducing an unforgettable array of players, teams and fans, celebrating the game’s resilience and enduring appeal, and showcasing both extraordinary accomplishments—and devastating losses and disappointments. The film highlights dramatic developments that transformed the game: the crippling 1994 strike that left many fans disillusioned with their heroes; the increasing dominance of Latino and Asian players who turned baseball into a truly international game; baseball’s skyrocketing profits, thanks to new stadiums, interleague play, and the wild card; the rise of a new Yankee Dynasty; the Red Sox’ historic World Series victory; the astonishing feats of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa and Barry Bonds; and the revelations about performance-enhancing drugs. Combining extraordinary highlights, stunning still photographs, popular music of the period, and insightful commentary by players, managers, experts and fans, The Tenth Inning interweaves the story of the national pastime with the story of America. In an age of globalization, deregulation and speculation, the film demonstrates that baseball has continued to be a mirror of the country—at its best and at its worst. The film will air 16 years after the original Emmy Award-winning, nine-part documentary series Baseball debuted in 1994 during the players’ strike. The original series was seen by more than 43 million viewers, making it the mostwatched program in PBS history. Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox in a 1999 game.
