For Brooklynn Keinsley, a health sciences major from Lanesville, Indiana, the Student Rec Center calls her name. “It’s a great atmosphere. I’m able to meet new people, be surrounded by students, get to meet faculty, and relieve some stress. It’s just a wonderful part of Indiana State.” Brooklynn takes advantage of the numerous exercise classes and finds the natatorium to be a unique offering (hello, hot tub!). Chris Pillow, ’04 A talented wide receiver and second-generation Sycamore, Chris Pillow is hoping for a three-peat when it comes time for his son to go to college. Attending Indiana State University on a football scholarship was an “eye-opening experience” for 18-year-old Chris Pillow. “You realize you are leaving your parents. You are on your own.” However, the faculty and upperclassmen on the team helped guide the young student on the path he travels today. A talented student-athlete playing wide receiver for the Sycamores, Chris quickly learned to schedule time for classes and study, as well as time for football practice and games. “It made you accountable, which is really good especially for young kids,” Chris said. “After I did what I had to do, I didn’t have very much free time left over.” His older teammates emphasized to the freshman that it was important to get a good education and have a career— besides football—in mind.
“Everybody who plays football wants to go on to the NFL, but not everyone makes it. And even those who do need to have a back-up plan in case they get injured and their football career is over,” Chris said. “Indiana State really gave me a sense of direction.” Growing up in Indianapolis and graduating from North Central High School, Chris chose Indiana State because of its reputation, size, and family affiliation. After graduating from Indiana State in 2004 with a degree in marketing, Chris is a business performance advisor at Insperity, a company that provides human resources and business solutions to small and medium-sized businesses. He and his wife, Kelly, have a 4-year-old son, Christopher Aidin. Chris is hoping he’ll become a third-generation Sycamore.

Chloe Burdette, ’14 As Chloe Burdette prepared to enter Indiana State to study fashion, some people challenged her choice. They asked, “Why would you go into fashion? You can’t do anything with it.“ But Burdette replied, “I never take ‘no’ for an answer.” It’s a tenet that’s empowered the State alumna. It helped her succeed throughout college and has been pivotal since as she finds success in the fast-paced, competitive and evolving world of fashion. “What was nice about being in textiles and apparel merchandising at Indiana State,” said Burdette of Brazil, Indiana, “was that you got to learn a lot of different facets of the industry to help decide which you wanted to go into.” After a coveted internship at the highprofile New York City bridal house Kleinfeld Bridal, she worked with the Buckle in Kansas City upon graduation. She left her mark on their clothing line, designing a denim the store named “the Burdette.”

Now she’s at the Trunk Club in Chicago, owned by Nordstrom since 2014. It’s a service that provides a personal shopping experience. “At Trunk Club, you’re essentially in your own lane when it comes to growth potential,” she said. “You set your goals, you set your mind and you go.” Burdette’s niche is in custom suiting and closet clean-outs. What’s next for the woman who doesn’t take “no” for an answer? “Right now, the path is just positive. I want to be No. 1 in this company,” she said.
