From the President Indiana State University Dear Graduates,

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

Congratulations! Today is truly a day of celebration as you have reached an educational milestone that has forever changed your life. You are now among the just over one-third of Americans and less than 10 percent of adults throughout the world who have earned a college degree. For graduate students, that number is even lower. At the same time, the workplace now requires more skills and knowledge than ever before. You are to be commended for taking the steps to position yourself in today’s world. Today more than ever, your life and experiences are yours to create. Don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams or to change your dreams. Don’t be afraid to take risks and fail. Say yes to those opportunities that come your way or actively pursue them when they don’t. Get involved in your community, wherever you locate, and make sure to exercise your right to vote and use your voice to share your opinions and ideas. Most importantly, be true to yourself and find your passion. To those earning a bachelor’s degree, as you move into the next phase of your life—whether that is graduate school, the workplace, the Peace Corps, the military or another path—stay in touch, and let us know what you are doing. For those completing graduate degrees, share news about the next steps in your career that you achieve with this advanced degree. We look forward to hearing about your accomplishments. And please come back for Homecoming! Enjoy this time and treasure each day. Best wishes for a great life. And remember, once a Sycamore, always a Sycamore! Sincerely,

Deborah J. Curtis, Ph.D. President

The Academic Procession The academic costume, which adds interest and color to the Commencement procession, is as old in history as are universities— that is, more than eight hundred years old. The academic hood, which is worn as an adornment today, served a practical purpose in days of unheated classrooms and cold sleeping quarters.

Since the degrees earned by the faculty of Indiana State University represent many colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, with a wide range of degree fields, the variety of attire forms a bright and colorful pattern.

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

The Commencement processional of faculty symbolizes honored faculty through award designation, faculty rank, and years of service to the University. Incipient of faculty rank, full professors/librarians are followed by associate professors/associate librarians, assistant professors/senior assistant librarians, concluding with instructors/ assistant librarians, each according to their years of service to the University.

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

In today’s academic procession, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer or the one about to be received. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university. The doctoral gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the degree was conferred.

Commencement Mace

The original mace was replaced in 2010. A new mace was designed and produced by Mark Joseph Clauss, mechanical technologist and lecturer in ISU’s College of Technology. The mace is made of cherry hardwood with a replica of the University’s Presidents Medallion embedded at the top. The medallion is a four-inch gold medal with 36 blue sapphire gemstones and the official University seal at the center.

Scholarship Honors Those students graduating with a scholarship index of 3.90 or higher will be graduated Summa Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.70 and 3.89 will be graduated Magna Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.50 and 3.69 will be graduated Cum Laude. Recognition of these special honors will be made in appropriate fashion at the Commencement ceremonies and on the diplomas.

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

A Commencement mace has been carried in every Commencement ceremony since 1966. The original mace was a gift to Professor Caleb Mills, State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Indiana from 1854-1857. Mills, who earned the title of “Father of Public Education,” was instrumental in the establishment of Indiana State Normal School—now Indiana State University. The original mace was actually a walking cane decorated with blue and white silk ribbons representing the school’s colors.

Student Speakers Antonio Cornelius

Hayley Tague

Antonio Cornelius of Gary, Indiana is the eldest of four siblings. He is known among his family and peers not only as outspoken but also as driven and motivated to succeed.

After graduating from Clay City Jr./Sr. High School, Hayley Tague chose to stay in her hometown of Terre Haute to attend college. Tague feels she has made the most out of her four years at Indiana State University. As a President’s Scholar and a graduate of the Honors College, she enjoyed many opportunities at ISU including studying abroad in Rome and Sorrento through the Honors College.

The 2016 Merrillville High School graduate is completing a bachelor’s degree in Financial Services at Indiana State University. During his time at ISU, Cornelius was involved in a variety of activities and organizations. He served as a staff member of the Mentoring Assistance for Prospective Scholars (MAPS) program at the Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center and as a social justice educator for the Residential Life Office. Cornelius also held leadership roles in organizations such as The Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, Investment Club, National Association of Black Accountants, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and as chair of the Gentleman’s Society. He has been an active member of Multicultural Men Achieving Scholarship, National Society of Leadership and Success, Sycamore Cheerleading, and Why You Laughing. Cornelius has attended programs through Sankofa 360 in Ghana, Leadershape Institute and Ivy Tech Community College. He also had the opportunity to spend some time at the Universidad de Veritas in Costa Rica through a study abroad program. Cornelius holds a passion for creative expression and has performed as an artist for Bless the Mic, Black History Month kick-off, Kwanzaa, Sycamore Sessions, and the 2019 Black Congratulatory ceremony. He hopes to continue his education while contributing to his community. Cornelius believes in the words by Abu Bakr, “Without knowledge action is useless and knowledge without action is futile.”

On campus, Tague, a mechanical engineering technology major, was involved in Greek Life as a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, where she served a term on the Executive Council. She was also involved in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, where she served three terms as an executive advisor for the group and one term as vice president. One of her favorite memories from her time in this student organization is creating a STEM-based day program for a local elementary school, which became an annual tradition. Tague is looking forward to a bright future in engineering after graduation. She accepted a position with Britt Aero, a supplier of aerospace parts and tooling for companies including Rolls-Royce and GE Aviation, where she plans to start her career as a process engineer and project manager.

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

Honors College As Dean of the Honors College, it is my great privilege to congratulate you on the wonderful achievement and milestone of your graduation. The journey to commencement is challenging, academically and personally; this road demands persistence and sacrifice, but ultimately forges a more thoughtful and confident person. As graduates of the Honors College, you have stepped beyond your chosen disciplines and professional aspirations to be further tested and have been found excellent and capable. You were drawn together in this experience not by what you studied, but by how you think—across boundaries, imaginatively, applying your energy and creativity to the challenges of your generation, to no less an end than improving the world. The astronomer and educator Carl Sagan once stated: “Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and an understanding of how the world works . . . We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.” You are these wide awake and courageous people. You have reached this moment by asking the difficult questions and pushing yourselves, but what will you do next? My advice is to be bold—seize this day, and the days to follow. Do not be afraid, of failure, rejection, criticism, seeming foolish in front of your peers. It is possible to walk timidly in life, to be passive in success, to listen but offer little. Don’t be that person. Your life, your perspectives, and especially your questions are not some add-on or a bonus feature in the world; they are its lifeblood. Dream large—now is the time for this. With your ability, your drive and your aspirations, there simply isn’t anything you can’t strive for. You are, quite literally, the leaders of the very near future. We live in world that is experiencing wild changes in technological capacity, complex and perilous environmental issues, resource and economic concerns that are truly global, and as great a need as ever to understand the cultural foundations and motivations of others. You won’t shrink from these challenges because your education has prepared you for them. Please remember that you will always be a member of the Honors community at Indiana State. We hope that you will return often to share your wisdom and insight with us and the generations of students that follow you. On behalf of the Honors College, I wish you the very best!

Gregory D. Bierly, Dean Honors College

From the Dean

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

College of Arts and Sciences As Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, let me congratulate you for earning a degree from Indiana State’s largest and most diverse college. The College of Arts and Sciences houses academic programs in the humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics. These are the disciplines that form the “backbone” of a university education. Your experiences in the classroom, the archives, the library, the laboratory, the stage or studio, and the internship site will serve you well. Classes from the CAS have helped you learn valuable skills like critical thinking, collaboration, teamwork, writing, and analysis—skills that will help you move seamlessly to a variety of employment settings or prepare you for graduate study. Of course you’ve also learned the theory and the applications of your chosen discipline in and out of the classroom as part of experiential learning, a hallmark of an Indiana State education. Experiential learning, as the name suggests, allows you to learn, experience, and apply the content, training, and skills of your discipline. When I speak to alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences they tell me that their classes allowed them to cultivate their natural curiosity and prepare for successful careers and rich, rewarding, and socially engaged lives. They cherish their experiences with professors and fellow students. They have been able to take their experiences in the college and leverage their success in college to create the next phase of their lives. Please know that your professors and I look forward to seeing and speaking with you when you return for Homecoming or when you visit the campus at any other time. We all wish you the very best.

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

Congratulations! While we are celebrating your graduation from ISU in a unique way this year, it does not in any way diminish your achievement or the beginning of the next exciting phase in your life. Whether you are on the cusp of starting your career or you are advancing in a new or existing professional path, the faculty and staff of the Bayh College of Education, along with your family and friends, are very proud of you. You have worked hard to get here. As you move forward, proudly remember that you will always be an Indiana State University Sycamore. You come from a University whose tradition was founded upon teacher education when the Indiana State Normal School was established in 1865. The school was renamed the Indiana State Teachers College in 1929 and renamed once more when we became Indiana State University in 1965. As the University has grown, so has the Bayh College of Education. Our program offerings have extended beyond teacher education and administration programs to include the allied professions of Counseling, Speech-Language Pathology, School Psychology, and Higher Education Leadership. We have built on our solid foundation and we continuously improve our courses and programs through the help of our various professional advisory boards, our professional networks, and our students. We do this to provide you with the relevant knowledge, course work, and experiences to be successful in today’s world. We invite you to stay networked to us and to each other. You’ve built personal and professional relationships here that can keep you grounded and yet can challenge you to grow. Remember that we are always here to help. We offer advanced course work, various professional development days for our alumni, and continued mentoring—because we remain invested in your success. Please let us know how you are doing, how we might help, and what we can do better. Congratulations, again, on achieving this important milestone! On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Bayh College of Education, we wish you only the best.

Janet Buckenmeyer, Dean Bayh College of Education

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

You have earned your degree and with that comes high expectations for what you will accomplish over the course of your lifetime. J.K. Rowling said, “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” (Excerpt from J.K. Rowling’s Commencement Address Harvard University June 5, 2008) We are proud of your knowledge, skills, and aspirations to make a difference, whether it is in your home, neighborhood, city, country, or the world. We look to a future where you might ensure a clean and plentiful water supply, encourage leisure, heal injury and treat illness, and develop the scientific evidence that supports health, healthcare, and social service practice. There is no shortage of work for, nor limit on, what may be accomplished by educated, informed and enlightened people. We believe in you! To the families, spouses, partners, children, and friends of today’s graduates, the faculty and staff recognize how important your contributions have been to ensure the success of each graduate. We know you are proud of your graduate and have been with them every moment, sacrificing and supporting, so that graduates could pursue their dreams. Thank you! The faculty and staff of the College of Health and Human Services know that you will create a better world and secure your future and your family’s future. Our wish for you is a meaningful career and a life filled with love and happiness. We hope that you will keep in touch with us, let us know how you are, and what we can do to support your next steps. To your success!

From the Dean College of Technology It is my honor and pleasure to extend sincere congratulations and best wishes to the college’s newest graduates. I know you will be exceptional ambassadors for the college by building upon our reputation for excellence.

INDIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

SPRING 2020 COMMENCEMENT

As graduates of the College of Technology you are truly unique. As you embark upon and progress in your careers, I encourage you to always remember why you chose your respective fields and the sacrifices you and others made in order to make that choice possible: to serve your communities by advancing the positive and productive application of technology, and to improve the quality of life for those in your communities with knowledge, compassion, and integrity. I want to give special thanks to your families and friends for their patience, understanding, sacrifices, and support. Their guidance and encouragement certainly will continue to be sought and valued in the years to come, and they should rejoice as together you celebrate this important milestone and the part they have played. This nation and our world face great changes and opportunities on the technology landscape, and with these come great challenges and responsibility. As the college’s graduates, you are equipped to meet those challenges with knowledge, skill, and professional and personal ethics. Indeed, you are not only well equipped to meet them, you are positioned to lead the way in applying your knowledge, skills, and professionalism to anticipating and addressing the challenges yet to come. I urge you to be both bold and creative in the application of your skills, knowledge, imagination, and integrity to solving the problems you and our society will face. Be life-long learners and seekers of new ways to solve society’s challenges. In the coming years, I ask that you not forget your college experiences, former professors, and fellow and future College of Technology alumni. I encourage you to not only give back to the college by supporting its activities, programs, research, and scholarships, but also by keeping us updated on the many achievements you will attain in your careers and personal lives. We look forward to your frequent returns to the college, and greatly value the insights and wisdom you will share with us and the generations of students who will follow you. Congratulations once again. The entire College of Technology family is indeed proud of you.

Nesli Alp, Ph.D., P.E., Dean, College of Technology

National Anthem Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there. Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Alma Mater Out upon the swelling breezes, let our voices ring As to thee, our Alma Mater, heartfelt praise we sing. Though the years to come may part us, Friends and comrades true, ISU, our Alma Mater, here’s our pledge to you.
