HS-/BHS-Series are handheld shockresistant thermal imaging cameras. The HS-Series are monoculars, the BHS-Series Bi-oculars. They produce a crisp image in the darkest of nights, and unlike other technologies, thermal imaging needs no light whatsoever to produce a clear image. Thanks to the HS-/BHS-Series, security professionals and law enforcement officers can see suspects in total darkness, through light fog and smoke, and light foliage.

FLIR HS-Series

The HS-/BHS-Series are excellent tools for everyone that needs to see what’s happening in total darkness, in all weather conditions, and without being seen themselves. The HS-/BHS- Series are extremely affordable units. From now on, everyone can afford thermal night vision. Price is no longer an issue, so there is no need to use less effective night vision technologies. Several versions of the HS-/BHS-Series are available.

Dear Readers,

Greetings from IndiaSAFE! September was obviously dominated by the events of its last week which focused on Prime Minister Modi’s landmark visit to the US. India has never openly been Washington’s top priority, so political pundits did not expect anything startling to come out of this visit, and the differences and similarities alike, were expected to continue as before. In the past and more so in recent years, bilateral relations between the US and India have been far from satisfactory for a host of reasons. International perceptions and foreign policies cannot undergo changes over a single visit, but most certainly, what this visit did was to infuse fresh life into the way the world – and particularly the United States – views India, and to reiterate that in spite of the pulls and pushes that dominate American foreign policy, India cannot be ignored for long.

Though there might not be many concrete deliverables on the US-India bilateral front, the foundation for some of the long-term changes in the way India is likely to conduct itself in the world in the coming years has been clearly spelt. The United States, on their part, has hailed the visit as extraordinarily successful, saying that it has provided a boost in terms of vision and focus for bilateral relations, and has re-energised the strategic partnership between the two countries. Back home after displaying his political acumen at the world arena, the Prime Minister wielded the broom (literally) when he launched the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, and urged a nation, largely perceived as filthy, to join him in his vow to clean India by 2019. He quoted the World Health Organization, wherein an average of Rs. 6500 per person was lost in India due to lack of cleanliness and hygiene. He said Swachh Bharat would therefore make a significant impact on public health, and in safeguarding incomes of the poor, ultimately contributing to the national economy. Team IndiaSAFE wishes its readers a very Happy Diwali – may the festival of lights brighten your lives like never before, bringing you health, wealth and all round happiness.

What’s the best way to handle light and shade? Simultaneously. That’s because Axis network cameras with Wide Dynamic Range technology can handle bright lights and dark shadows in the same image. And that means it’s easier to spot and identify people, vehicles and incidents, no matter how awkward the lighting conditions. I’m a security manager for a power plant and WDR has made my life so much easier. Interview

Sudhir Tiku

Head – South Asia, Security Systems Division, Bosch Limited

Bosch Ltd recently organized a comprehensive media meet at their head office in Bengaluru, and IndiaSAFE had the opportunity to interact with Sudhir Tiku, Head – South Asia, Security Systems Division, Bosch Limited. Some excerpts . . . IndiaSAFE: What transformation has taken place in the security industry in general, and Bosch in particular in recent years? Sudhir Tiku (ST): The security industry, as such, in India is becoming more mature. Whatever business unit we talk of – be it Video, Communication, Fire detection, Access control, Engineering solutions or Integrated solutions – there is a drive towards quality, convergence and digitization. This means

products should be capable of getting seamlessly integrated into each other, talk to third party systems and further throw up intelligent data and alarms. I think this is where Bosch has traditionally played a vital role because we are a big votary of new technologies and promoters of open platforms. We are one of the founding members of ONVIF, which is an open platform for video. Now the new revolutionary platform in Communication industry is OMNEO and we are contributing to that by launching prod-

ucts around this platform. In the security industry, we see tremendous convergence of audio, video and data control over a single pipeline. We think that from the Bosch and security industry perspective, it is good news for customers. This trend gives scalability and customers get the capability to take control on their buildings, premises and locations very effectively. As far as Bosch’s journey in the security industry is concerned, we will continue to deliver high quality products that have been our tradition. So to summarize, we feel that both Bosch and security industry are at advantage points.

IndiaSAFE: In addition to high-end products, Bosch has also initiated products for the mid-segment market. Are all these products technologically at par? ST: Most of the products that we have traditionally sold are technologically advanced products, defined for challenging environments and conditions. Our specialized PTZ cameras can be

made of such housings which can withstand temperatures above 60 deg and survive harsh weather conditions. We also have Starlight cameras which can see in very low and challenging light conditions. We have introduced the world’s first IP conference system. We have dual ray fire detectors which do not send false alarms, which is a huge challenge in dusty environments. We have a deep range of products in the professional sound and access control domains. We also have enterprise softwares to integrate all of these products. For the mid segment market we have created products under the theme ‘Advantage Line.’ These products are technologically smart and value for money. We are seeing good success in this segment and will grow this segment with our new product lines in Communication, Video and Fire businesses. The ‘Advantage Line’ range is helping us to increase our market share further.

IndiaSAFE: We interviewed Dr Berns in November 2013 where he mentioned setting up manufacturing for cameras in India. How has this plan progressed? ST: A substantial portion of our revenue in India is coming from the ‘local for local’ theme. We have already launched multiple products under this program and will continue to strengthen it further.

IndiaSAFE: Are you participating in IFSEC India 2014? How in your view do these events help in the promotion of business? ST: We have participated in IFSEC in the past and we will continue to participate in all major trade exhibitions as and when required. We do close to 10 technology shows each year with our customers and invite key stake holders to further technology trends and drive awareness. We will continue to engage consultants, architects and customers and inform them of the latest changes and upgrades in technology and products.

IndiaSAFE: Please briefly elaborate on the Bosch Technology Shows held/ to be held during 2014. ST: We have executed multiple shows in key cities and launched our key products – DCN multimedia, Starlight cameras, ETX powered loudspeakers and advanced version of our video management software.

IndiaSAFE: Launching new products is one of your key growth drivers. Which are the new security products you have launched during 2014? ST: We have a very strong pipeline of new products for all the businesses that we do in India for security – like

IndiaSAFE: What is your market share on date? ST: Overall we are close to a double digit market share in the industry. We are definitely among the top three players in the domains where we conduct business.

we launched the DCN multimedia, the first IP conferencing system; we launched the Starlight camera which can see at very low light Lux levels; we also introduced the ETX powered loudspeakers and other products. We have launched some interesting products during 2013-14 and in the next 2 years we also have a very strong pipeline.

IndiaSAFE: What are the new systems or products in the pipeline? ST: We have a very strong pipeline of products all across the business line. We have new set of cameras coming in and one of the new concepts that we are talking about is Ultra High Definition cameras that will take resolutions to new heights. We will also have trendy and rugged industrial cameras with enhanced features adding to the strong family of Industrial cameras that we already have. We will continue to launch multiple series of products under the ‘Advantage Line’ theme.

IndiaSAFE: What are the major concerns that could hinder the company’s progress? ST: We think that the trends that we are currently seeing in the country are positive – the trend of regulation, the trend of urbanization, huge investment around transportation systems, huge outlays around power generating capabilities etc. We feel, for the security industry, there are very minimal roadblocks. We also see good signals coming from the new government where they want to make a

lot of smart cities which means there are lots of opportunities for companies like us, and we feel we have the right products to supplement the vision of the society at large.

IndiaSAFE: Who are your competitors and what steps you have devised to stay ahead of them? ST: See, having competition is good as we learn from one another. Given the background of Bosch and the strong engineering company that we are – we believe in creating products around technology which are needed by customers. Besides, we try to keep the customer at the center of focus and keep our work force motivated. We work on long term as a company and while companies may come and go in this industry, we believe we will still be there. We have a large state-of-the-art training academy in Bengaluru where we invite our partners and end customers and train them on all systems in a structured manner and most importantly, at no cost.

IndiaSAFE: What are your plans regarding increasing headcount? What are attrition levels?

Public Address & Conference Systems from Bosch

ST: At Bosch we believe in productivity. We have been consistently, year after year, improving our productivity, and we are recruiting the right people for the right position and empower them with Bosch values and technical trainings. We are recruiting high quality resources to meet our goals of aggressive growth. We have one of the lowest attrition rates, if we go by the standards of the industry.

IndiaSAFE: What is the percentage share of the government and PSU business in the total revenues and where do you see it heading? ST: We have a good percentage of our revenue coming from government and PSUs, and we see it continuing to grow. Since we operate in all growth verticals and our solution set is aligned to the vertical needs of the customers, we are seeing growth across all of our focus verticals.

IndiaSAFE: L1 being the normal criteria to procure

orders in the government sector, how do you find yourself competing in the bid? ST: We believe that the trend of L1 may continue in some sectors but we are also seeing consideration for technical solutions and value proposition. The good thing about Indian customers is that they are clear about what they want to buy and they are keen to buy quality products.

IndiaSAFE: Can you throw light on your after sales service? ST: We have warehouses and service centers across the country through both direct and indirect models, and we have also nominated partners who can service our products. We have a fully equipped service centre in Bengaluru which is directly managed by Bosch. Our turn-around-time for service is one of the best in the Industry and will continue to raise the standards.

IndiaSAFE: What is your message to our readers? ST: We want to thank all of the readers of IndiaSafe for continuing to show interest in Bosch. We are committed to delivering quality and reliable products in the security industry. Whenever you buy Bosch, you buy Peace of Mind.

WHITE PAPER

The Trade-off Between Image Resolution and Field of View:

The Influence of Lens Selection By Andrea Iniguez – VP Business Development, Theia Technologies

I want a lens that can cover the whole parking lot and I want to be able to read a license plate.” Sounds familiar? As a manufacturer of wide angle lenses, Theia Technologies is frequently asked if we have a product that allows the user to do both of these things simultaneously. And the answer is ‘it depends.’ It depends on several variables – the resolution you start with from the camera, how far away the subject is from the lens, and the field of view of the lens. But keeping the first two variables constant, the impact of the lens field of view becomes clear. One of the important factors to consider when designing video surveillance installations is the trade-off between lens field of view and image resolution.

With any given combination of camera and lens the native resolution from the camera is spread over the entire field of view of the lens, determining pixel density and image resolution. The wider the resolution is spread, the lower the pixel density, the lower the image resolution or image detail. The images below, taken with the same camera from the same distance away, illustrate this trade-off. The widest field of view allows you to cover the widest area but does not allow you to see high detail, while the narrowest field of view permits capture of high detail at the expense of wide area coverage. The next series of images, each taken with the same high resolution camera from the same distance away similarly illustrates the trade-off of high detail and ability to identify a person when using a wide angle of view lens and the ability to cover a wide area.

improve image detail. First is the distance from the camera to the subject. If possible, the installer could improve the image detail by moving the camera closer to the subject. This may be feasible in a new installation, but in an existing system this may be limited by the physical constraints of the location and the system, as well as costs associated with re-cabling. Moving closer improves the image detail, but field of view is reduced. The second variable that may be changed is the camera resolution. By selecting a higher resolution camera with a higher starting number of pixels and spreading them over the same field of view as before, the pixel density will be higher and the resulting image detail will be better. Of course, this assumes you can make that change in your system and you can support the likely higher priced hardware and data storage needs required with higher resolution systems.

Other ways to improve image detail

S

Image resolution versus field of view

O

ne important, but often neglected consideration in video surveillance systems design is the trade-off between image resolution and field of view.

o now you see the trade-off. You would like to cover the whole area, but unfortunately you are not able to read the license plate. What to do? At this point, there are a few other variables that you may be able to change in your system design to October 2014

26

www.indiasafe.com

The higher resolution, data intensive cameras will also lower the frame rate of the system which must also be kept in mind especially with industry specific standards and requirements.

Use available tools

T

here are many useful tools available to help support systems design and correct equipment selection. One of those is Theia’s own image resolution and lens calculator. The calculator allows you to input some important details of your application and potential equipment, then quickly calculates image resolution with those assumptions. You input the camera resolution and sensor size you intend to use, the lens field of view you believe you need, then input your key project variables – either how much resolution you think you need in terms of pixel density, how much coverage you need in distance (feet or meters), or how far away the camera is from the subject. The tool then calculates the other variables for you. For example, you indicate you plan to use a 5 megapixel 1/2.5” sensor camera, a 3mm lens and you will be 50 feet away from your subject. The tool will calculate your pixel density – in this case 27 pixels/ foot, and coverage width – here 97 feet wide. The tool then provides an image that represents the level of image resolution you would get for your selected variables allowing you to

quickly see if you have enough resolution to meet the needs of your application. The newest iPhone and iPad versions of Theia’s calculator App include enhancements that allow users to input the camera height and/ or camera angle so that one can tell if a person’s head, for example, will be covered in the image given different distances from the camera. The latest version also allows the user to introduce a level of jpeg noise so that the resulting image more accurately reflects real world conditions.

The importance of lens selection

I

f you decide to increase your image resolution by increasing the camera resolution, you must also consider lens selection. The lens needed for an IP/ megapixel camera is much different than the lens needed for a traditional analog camera. These higher resolution cameras demand higher performance lenses in order to take full advantage of the increased resolution. For instance, in a megapixel camera, the focal plane spot size of the lens must be comparable or smaller than the pixel size on the sensor (Figures A and B below), otherwise the light falls off the pixel resulting in a fuzzy image. Using a standard resolution lens with a 5 megapixel camera will produce a blurry image. Most often if you want to take advantage of all the pixels a multi megapixel camera provides, a high

October 2014

27

quality lens with matching resolution is needed otherwise the money spent on a high resolution camera is wasted. One would assume, then, that all someone specifying a megapixel camera needs to do is specify a megapixel lens. However, it’s not that simple and in many cases it can be quite difficult to ensure that the lens needed is the lens being offered. Traditionally, just about any decent lens would do the job for traditional analog cameras so specifying the lens wasn’t a problem. As a result, too many designers and integrators are still unaware that for megapixel cameras not all lenses are created equally. In megapixel cameras the pixel size and the required lens spot size varies depending on the size of sensor and quantity of pixels it contains. You can have 2 different cameras, both 1.3 megapixel, but if the sensor size is not the same the pixel size will be different. The figures below illustrate this. In selecting a lens it is important to choose one that is designed for use with both the sensor size and the resolution of the camera. Over-specifying the lens to have a higher megapixel rating than the camera is acceptable. This ensures the lens is not the resolution limiting factor in the system. With a megapixel camera, designers and integrators have entered a new world in which millions of pixels and 1500 pixel wide images are the norm, not the 320 TV lines used in most analog cameras. The old TV lines can now be thought of

www.indiasafe.com

CMYK

CMYK

white paper

as rows of pixels. Resolution needs have skyrocketed. Many manufacturers refer to their products as a ‘megapixel lens’ but they seldom define what the adjective ‘megapixel’ means. Is that ‘MP’ lens to be used with a 1.3 megapixel camera or a 3 megapixel camera? Can it be used with all megapixel cameras? By referring back to Figures A and B, you would probably expect that different levels of megapixel cameras would also need different lenses. Higher megapixel cameras with their smaller pixels need lenses with more internal glass elements and higher precision elements than lower megapixel models. These superior lenses should deliver the greater performance required for higher megapixel cameras.

What can you do?

S

o what can help you determine the quality of lens you need? A Line Pair per Millimeter (LP/ MM) specification provides the resolution properties of a lens and can be used to help select the correct lens for your camera. LP/ MM determines the smallest width of a pair of adjacent pixels that can be resolved by the lens. Standard analog cameras need a lens with around 30 LP/ MM while megapixel lenses start at 60 LP/ MM and can go up to over 200 LP/ MM. For example, a lens with resolution of 60 LP/ MM on a 1/3-inch 1.3MP camera that has resolution of 133 LP/ MM does not utilize the full resolution of the camera. That’s because the lens resolves only 60 LP/ MM while the camera requires 133 LP/ MM for its full megapixel resolution. The lens cannot focus to see fine enough detail for the camera’s sensor. In the example above, a feature such as a pole which would be 1 pixel wide

will be washed out by the lower lens resolution and not be visible. The pole would have to cover almost 3 pixels before the lens can resolve it. In other words, no object less than 3 pixels wide will be clearly visible with the lens and camera in the example. The consequence is that the extra pixels of the camera are wasted – you paid too much for the camera. Beware, too, many lenses are labeled megapixel based on the LP/ MM in the center of the lens, not at the edge. This difference can be major for you as the user. It’s not uncommon for a megapixel lens to have a 150 LP/ MM in the center but only a 60 LP/ MM at the edge. This means that the resolution at the edge of the ‘so called’ megapixel lens is no better than that of a standard analog camera lens at half the price. Also, the size of pixels varies from megapixel camera to megapixel camera, influencing which lens is best for a specific camera. A LP/ MM ‘required’ resolution can also be calculated for the camera based on the camera pixel size. Adding to the complexity, the physical width of pixels in cameras will vary due to their differing image sensor sizes and the number of pixels that must fit on the imager. In other words, you can have two different size sensors each with the same number of total pixels, yet the resolution required of the lens will be different. This means that the LP/ MM is relative only to the size of the pixels on the sensor. A lens with a 120 LP/ MM might be perfect for a 1.3 megapixel camera using a 1/2 inch imager but not very good for a 2 megapixel camera using a 1/3 inch imager because the pixel size of the latter is much smaller. Ideally the October 2014

28

lens resolution should be greater than the camera resolution. To calculate the LP/ MM needed for a given camera, divide the width or height of the sensor in pixels by the physical width or height of the sensor in millimeters, then divide this number by 2. Dividing by 2 is necessary because LP/ MM is defined for 2 adjacent pixels (a line pair). Pixels per chip width/ width/ 2 = LP/ MM While the LP/ MM lens rating was not generally provided by lens manufacturers in the past, it is becoming more common with the adoption of megapixel technology and can be useful in specifying a lens today. However many manufacturers will use a simplified lens rating for the megapixel specification (e.g., 1.3 or 3 MP) and standard sensor size (e.g., 1/2 or 1/3 inch).

Get the maximum out of your megapixel cameras

W

hen buying analog cameras, you were concerned about darkness, glare, rain and other factors but seldom gave the lens a second thought. With today’s high-resolution, megapixel cameras the lens might be the most important accessory to specify with each megapixel camera. After all, if the lens doesn’t provide the resolution that the camera is capable of producing, you’ve simply wasted your investment on a higher resolution camera.

FEATURE

IP Video Surveillance & Wireless Networks A Successful Partnership John Semple, IndigoVision’s Head of Product Management, discusses the benefits, applications and technology involved when IP Video surveillance is deployed using wireless networks

O

ne of the many benefits of IP Video surveillance technology compared with traditional analogue video equipment is that digital video is compressed and streamed across standard Ethernet networks using the Internet Protocol (IP). This is exactly the same protocol as used on corporate networks and the Internet. Digital video can therefore be transmitted across any broadband network connection, i.e., cable, fibre or wireless. There are a number of wireless technologies that allow digital surveillance video to be easily transmitted across large urban areas and from remote Outdoor Wireless IP Dome installation locations. As far as the IP Video system is concerned the wireless interface is transparent and is simply a replacement or extension of the standard wired IP network. Connecting to a wireless network is the same as connecting to an Ethernet switch.

Benefits of wireless IP Video

C

ombining IP Video surveillance with wireless networks can provide

the user with a number of significant benefits: ● No cable: eliminating the need for costly installation works. ● Less disruption: with less cable to install, project timeframes are significantly reduced and business disruption is minimised. ● Lower transmission costs: no expensive fixed lines required. ● Expansion and migration: legacy surveillance systems can easily be extended using wireless IP Video and provide a cost-effective solution for migration to fully digital systems. ● Remote monitoring: surveillance of remote locations over large distances. ● Mobile applications: live and recorded video from remote surveillance cameras can be viewed while on the move using 3G mobile phone networks. ● Heritage protection: in many historic buildings installation of cable is prohibited, wireless is the only alternative.

spectrum and provides high-speed wireless internet and data network access over a wide area. For IP Video applications wireless broadband networks can be deployed in a number of configurations: ● Point-to-point, often known as an Ethernet Bridge: A simple link between two networks. ● Point-to-Multipoint: This topology allows several locations to be connected to a single network. ● Mesh wide-area network: This is a communications network made up

Wireless technologies Wireless broadband networks

of radio nodes organised in a mesh topology. They are in effect a router network minus the cabling between nodes and they create a high-bandwidth network over a specific coverage area. Surveillance cameras with a wireless interface can be located anywhere within the mesh, allowing them to be repositioned as the environment changes or to be temporarily installed in crime hotspots around an urban area. Different network technologies, both wired and wireless, are often deployed together to achieve very wide area coverage. Chihuahua State in Northern Mexico has deployed such a system based on distributed IP Video technology. Covering nearly 260,000Km2, Chihuahua is the largest of Mexico’s states. Its capital and largest city has the same name, Chihuahua and it includes 8 other major cities. The truly distributed nature of the system allows an operator in the state capital to view video from any other city in the region from a PTZ camera that they can control. The surveillance systems in each city are deployed using point-to-multipoint wireless networks. Each city is connected to the state capital via fixed network links.

WiMAX

W

iMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a telecommunications technology that supports wireless broadband access over large distances as an alternative to cable and DSL. It is different from Wi-Fi, which is a shorter range system (coverage over hundreds of metres); as opposed to WiMAX that provides wide area coverage over kilometres. An excellent example of this technology is in place at the Acuicola Marina fish farm in the Spanish Province

Wireless IP Video monitors offshore fish farm

of Castellon on the Mediterranean coast. Their offices and a warehouse are located at Burriana, 3Km inland, with the fish farm facilities sited 10Km offshore. The valuable fish stock is a target for poachers and Acuicola Marina has always found it difficult to police the offshore facilities. To overcome this, they deployed an IP Video system with a wireless network infrastructure consisting of a local Wi-Fi network covering the off shore facilities with a 7 Mbps WiMAX radio link back to the on-shore offices, 13km away. As well as providing security for the fish stock it also offered them operational benefits with submersible cameras monitoring fish stocks and food distribution.

Mobile wireless broadband

T

his provides high-speed internet access through existing 3G mobile phone networks. It is an established technology that many of us use on our phones to access the internet while on the go. It can be a very powerful tool for law enforcement officers to monitor live and recorded footage from surveillance cameras on a laptop mounted in police vehicles. This can be demonstrated by the fully integrated Public Video Surveillance System (PVS) that has been developed in the City of Lansing, MI, USA. Here, video is streamed at 30fps across various network technologies including ShDSL’s, fibre, mesh wireless and mobile 3G broadband. The police department’s 60 vehicles each have a laptop with high speed broadband 3G technology that allows officers to view and control any October 2014

camera in the system. Commenting on the use of mobile surveillance equipment, Lansing Police Chief, Mark Alley said, “As we are always looking for ways to free up patrol time for our officers, we decided that we were going to take an aggressive approach and get the equipment out there to our officers so they can be more effective and efficient.”

Satellite

S

atellite broadband access is an expensive communications solution, but is often the only technology available for remote areas. Since the data has got to travel approximately 35,000km to reach its destination, latency (or delay) can be more of an issue than with standard radio-based wireless networks. They can also be affected by weather and climatic conditions. However, where traditional network infrastructure is not available, satellite broadband can often be the only solution. An innovative wireless surveillance system is helping to cut crime and provide a safe and secure environment for visitors to the Grand Canyon West Resort, Arizona. A distributed IP Video system has been deployed at multiple sites, providing an integrated surveillance solution across a wide area. Grand Canyon West is a popular tourist destination on the west side of the Canyon

owned and operated by the Hualapai tribe. The resort includes Skywalk, which allows visitors to ‘Walk the Sky ’ on a horseshoe shaped glass bridge that overhangs the Grand Canyon. Several sites, including Eagle Point (home of the Skywalk), Guano Point, a hotel, fuel depot and airport, are all centrally monitored from the airport terminal building. The facilities are located several kilometres apart and are completely standalone with no cabling or infrastructure between them. All the sites are powered by their own generators. Each local IP network is interconnected using a satellite broadband network.

Bandwidth

W

ireless networks typically have far lower bandwidth than wired networks. A wired network can have an available bandwidth of up to 700 Mb/s, whereas wireless networks typically offer no more than 25 Mb/s. It is therefore paramount to minimise the amount of data transmitted across the wireless portion of the network. This can be achieved by ensuring that the IP Video system deployed has the best compression available, is based on a distributed architecture and has features that ensure the minimum amount of video is transmitted at all times.

Compression

D

eploying the very best H.264 based video compression technology can make a significant difference to the performance of the wireless IP Video system. This is particularly important when using increasingly popular High-Definition (HD) cameras with their higher resolutions and bit-rates. The data rates from different manufacturers’ cameras can vary significantly, even when comparing cameras implementing H.264. An

average IP camera can transmit 5 or 6 times more data than the best available camera for the same scene. With the limited bandwidths available from wireless networks, this is an important consideration.

point in transmitting full-frame video. Motion detection analytics can be used to detect a change in motion in a scene and automatically modify the video output stream from low frame-rate to maximum.

Architecture

Dual streaming

here are typically two different architectures used by IP Video systems, centralised and distributed. A centralised architecture uses a master database usually located in the central control room or head office. A distributed architecture spreads the data around the security management system generally keeping it close to where it is produced or needed. Normally much more data is transferred across the network to the centralised video and storage servers than would be the case with a distributed system, where video workstations and network video recorders (NVRs) can be located at the edge of the network. Welldesigned distributed systems reduce the need for large amounts of data to travel longe distances e.g., between the central network and the edge components.

ameras on some IP Video systems are capable of dual streaming, that is outputting two separate video streams at different frame-rates. Typically, this could be used to transmit a lower framerate stream across a wireless network, while using a full frame-rate stream for recording on a local NVR.

T

Multicasting

I

P Multicasting is an extremely powerful networking feature that allows video from the same camera to be efficiently viewed and recorded by multiple operators at the same time, with the same network bandwidth requirement as would be for a single operator. Using Multicasting on a distributed system is an extremely efficient solution for IP Video systems.

Analytics

R

eal-time analytics running in the cameras at the network edge can be used to reduce the amount of video that is streamed across the wireless network. When a scene is inactive, there is no October 2014

31

C

Bandwidth management

L

eading IP Video systems have a set of tools for bandwidth management. These allocate bandwidth to each camera stream based on a pre-configured maximum available for a particular network setup. These tools would typically work on a WAN connection, not on the local network. In the case when the WAN connection is wireless, this can be a very useful tool for ensuring the available bandwidth is not exceeded and works well alongside features such as dual streaming, mentioned above.

Summary

T

he benefits of using wireless networks with IP Video systems are clear and can sometimes be the only solution available for large or remote areas. However, the overall performance of the network and hence the surveillance system, is very dependent on the performance, features and capability of the IP Video system itself. Choosing the correct IP Video technology that has good compression, the most suitable architecture and fully-featured IP cameras is very important.

Interviews

As part of the Genetec Security Solutions Roadshow in Asia, Genetec organised a meeting of end-users in Mumbai on 9 September at the Sahara Star Hotel. During this event, attendees had the opportunity to meet with the Genetec team, ask questions, and experience SecurityCenter, Genetec’s IP Unified Platform and how it goes beyond video surveillance. They also learnt about the latest Genetec product developments as well as innovations from Genetec’s Technology Alliance partners. IndiaSAFE had the opportunity of an in-depth meeting with Francios Brouillet, Product Manager, and Albert Anto C, Senior Regional Sales Manager, South Asia, at GENETEC. We carry some excerpts

Francios Brouillet Product Manager

IndiaSAFE: Can you please give a brief background to Genetec? Francios Brouillet (FB): Genetec started almost 18 years ago, initially known as a video management software company. Around the year 2005 a lot of our video management system users wanted access control, and we thought that there was an opportunity to merge the two together. One of the main factors that drove our decision to move to access control was also the evolution of the controller to IP. We are a software developer that builds on IP solutions, so seeing that access control was also moving in the same direction it was appealing for us to explore this new opportunity. The other thing we wanted to change in the market was to open up the architecture of access control – we wanted to do the same thing we were offering on the video side i.e., our clients should benefit from an open architectural solution for access control as well. So we started work on access control and later on, our unified platform that we call SecurityCentre.

SecurityCentre is a unified platform in the sense that it is one system that manages several edge devices from cameras to door controllers, and it is also one unified system for operators who have to work with only one application to carry out investigations or monitor day to day events. It is almost ten years and we have made significant progress in access control, and although we are still mainly known as a video management system we are trying to educate people about what we can offer in terms of access control and what we have achieved so far.

IndiaSAFE: What is your product range? FB: We are offering an Enterprise class system in terms of access control which is very different from what we see in the market – it is a completely unified system. This system does not only unlock doors with a credential, it is an open solution. Not only do we support multiple vendors, we offer different types of hardware that could go from PoE devices like PoE controllers, Wi-Fi, or traditional serial interface – we give this option to the October 2014

38

client. We also have our software development kits which allow us to integrate with our different partners, whether they are asset tracking or intruder systems, so that way we can complement our offering with other systems, and by finding the best partners we can offer the best solutions. SecurityCentre is divided into three main components. The first component is what we call Omnicast which is an IP video management solution; the second is Synergis which is an IP access control solution; and the third line of products is AutoVu which is for IP automatic license plate recognition. We have been operating directly for about three years though we have done projects in India through global partners much earlier. For example, Terminal I in New Delhi was done by us about seven years ago through the then GE Security. We now have a presence in India from 2011 and we are more focused through channel distribution.

IndiaSAFE: How are you structured as a company in India? We do not have an office in India and strongly rely on our channel part-

interview

ners who are integrators or distributors and are trained on our solution. We have a local resource – commercial, as well as pre-sales – in India for sales engineering, who reports to the Singapore office.

IndiaSAFE: What are the challenges you face while operating in India? FB: In terms of the overall message that we have to offer, that remains the same in India or in any other part of the world but there are some things that don’t necessarily apply to India. For example, in North America we would be pushing on saving the cost of labour – that would be a strong message proposing Wi-Fi and PoE, but that would not be as strong a message in India. However, this does not mean that the unified messages are not appealing for India so we just need to focus on other key messages of our solution. Another thing for access control, even if we’re not forcing our client to select one particular hardware platform in India, we do sell the hardware in other regions. For instance we are able to sell HID, but in India this has been a challenge because we need to be able to source it from India and not have to import it. These are common challenges that any company would face while doing business here.

IndiaSAFE: A word about your competition, please? FB: We are a late entrant into the Indian market and we know that this market is primarily driven by prices. We are perceived as a premium product here – and would like to remain that way – and see how we can address the market through our differentiators like unification and the other features we bring to the market, the kind of solutions that help people deploy smoothly, and also in the long

run. The idea is not just to be a premium product but to offer something that adds value to what the customer is paying for. If the overall system appears a little more expensive, that is because we add a lot of services and third party integration and other tools to help with the deployment. In the long run we might be saving money for the client if he is able to benefit from all those different components. We focus on lowering the cost of the servers so that the client can invest in better cameras, better VMS and a better solution that drives these two, rather than spend heavily on servers.

IndiaSAFE: Where do you fit in with PSIM? FB: We can work with PSIM but because we have a unified platform and most of the time we can achieve the same objectives with it by integrating with other systems not made by Genetec, sometimes the question is – why do you need a PSIM? The main advantage of the unified platform over a PSIM is that for PSIM to work you need to customise, develop and maintain an integration between all the sub-systems where versioning is a very important aspect. When working with the unified system you do not have to worry about the versioning because all the components of the system are growing at the same time – this is even more true for Genetec because in our solution we support backward and forward compatibility, so even if you want to keep some of the components to the older versions, you can still do so – you do not need to change the whole system to the newer version.

IndiaSAFE: Any plans of setting office in India? FB: Right now we want to focus the channel strategy right – we set it up three October 2014

39

years ago and have about 30 partners but the revenues are not commensurate with this number of partners. We plan on reducing our partners to about 8 to 10, as we have been doing in other countries. Ours is not a mass market product and needs a lot of engineering effort, and only people who are committed to deliver solutions are capable of selling it. We do not want partners who are opportunist and promote our products only for a couple of projects. We want to nourish our partners and grow our business through them.

IndiaSAFE: What is your latest product? FB: We are continuously trying new ways to bring our innovations and software to our customers and about a year and a half ago we launched a cloud-based solution for video which is called Stratocast. We are also expanding our portfolio on Appliance – the idea behind that is to help with the distribution and installation of the platform. We are not changing our mind going from software to hardware – we are just trying to find a better way for people to have access to our solution. What to expect in other terms of our development is that we are constantly searching for new innovations to add new things into security – things at first that might seem unrelated to security but eventually fit into the security system. For example, intercom can fit into the security system and is not merely about receiving a call but managing it as well. We are also working on making it more easy for our clients to work with all the information they are dealing with – what we call situational awareness – its not just about being able to display on a map but being able to have an interaction with those events. These are things to look out for in the short as well as long terms.

INTERVIEW

Albert Anto C

Senior Regional Sales Manager, South Asia

IndiaSAFE: What is your go-tomarket strategy for India? Albert Anto C (AAC): We reach the market through distributors and installers who resell our solution in India locally as certified partners who are proficient in the security industry. Our product is mainly software that is license based, which can easily be e-mailed to our customers whenever there is a requirement for a project. As of now we do not sell any of our hardware like our appliances or even our LPR solution or HID controllers here. We are purely focused on the software licensing part. When we work on a project, we sell the software platform, and the hardware is being bought locally by the SIs. Our platform is open and we give the flexibility to the SI and the customer to choose the brands they want – we do not tie our customers to purchasing particular brands. They are also welcome to change their minds about the brands that work with our system as their needs evolve.

IndiaSAFE: How do you provide training? AAC: We have two trainings – one is the operator training for the end-user and one is a certification training, which is usually four days if it’s the video part and six days if it also includes the access control part, on a chargeable basis. Mainly we train the partners, and apart

from that we also do systems engineering training done by our SIs to all our partners and some end-users, for them to understand how the system architecture has to be, what are the types of components they have to look for and what are the pitfalls in the design. On and off, whenever we go to our partners’ offices we talk about technical issues they have and how to resolve them.

IndiaSAFE: How do you give technical support when needed? AAC: We have three support offices – one in Singapore, one in Montreal and one in Paris, and once a case is logged any one can answer. Mostly it is remote support and we can solve most of the issues in this manner. That’s why it is important to properly do our system design and here the system design training comes into play. The design is also vetted by our sales engineers – that should solve most of the issues. But new issues can arise and any time our SIs or partners can log onto our G-track which is operational 24x7. We have a remote support in Singapore and Canada and we can do remote access to the system to solve issues. Most of the time it is a configuration issue and many are not even a Genetec issue but something to do with the switches or other hardware that has been put in place. We advise them on what are the recommendations to be put into use at that time. We also do field engineering support if it is a very complex project and they need someone to be on site, but these are very rare cases. October 2014

40

IndiaSAFE: What is your marketing strategy for India? AAC: We have started publishing a lot of case studies from India – we have published two in the last three months and there are a few more. We want to propagate the Genetec message through our case studies, to what we have done rather than only what we want to achieve. We have done a lot of good deployments and there are many more in the pipeline.

IndiaSAFE: Which particular verticals do you focus on? AAC: Manufacturing is one and hospitality is another – we are also trying to focus on city surveillance, where we have not been very successful till now. What we see so far is that most of the current deployments are not really very large scale, and the true value of our product is evident with large scale deployments – we have some very prominent city surveillance references globally.

IndiaSAFE: Where do you see Genetec in India at the end of 2015? AAC: In terms of revenue, we should be double of what we are doing now. In terms of projects we see a lot of large projects coming up in India and people are more aware of what they need, so it is much easier to educate them on what we have. Over the past three years we have seen a substantial change in the mind-set of our clients and we hope this will help drive our share in the market.

Hospital in India Kitted Out with VIVOTEK Cameras

Protecting Patients and Caregivers

seamlessly. Computer Services Integration Pvt. Ltd. – a company with experience and specialization in IP surveillance, network infrastructure projects, wireless and video, and data and audio communication systems – together with VIVOTEK worked to bring the project to fruition, and all systems were up and running by October of 2013.

A

s one of the leading healthcare delivery providers across the pan Asia-Pacific region, Fortis Healthcare Limited is committed to not only sustaining, but also bettering the lives of those in need of clinical care. The company’s operations span many borders – countries such as India, Singapore, and Sri Lanka, all the way to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates and the island nation of Mauritius – and its services reach some of the world’s fastest growing markets. As a provider of integrated health care in the areas of diagnostics, primary care, and specialty day care in hospitals, Fortis Healthcare is a major force in the industry and poised to take on a leading position globally. With expanding operations comes the responsibility of protecting not only patients’ physical health, but also the environment in which they and their caregivers work on a day-to-day basis. Such was the case with one of the hospital locations in Ludhiana, India, and they sent out a call for help that VIVOTEK answered wholeheartedly.

Choosing the Right Hardware to Build a Seamless Security

G

uarding expensive medical equipment and the safety of staff and personnel was the primary concern of this project. When it came to choosing the right hardware, there were four main aspects of surveillance that played into the decision: patient movement, patient security, employee security, and grounds security. Inside the hospital 54 units of the IP8133 model were mounted. This camera allows users to simultaneously receive multiple streams and is an ideal option for keeping a remote eye on patients and staffs. The camera features tamper detection, 32-channel recording software, and a built-in PIR sensor for human detection, all packaged in a compact design. Five IP8332 units were used for monitoring goings-on outside of the hospital. The bullet-style network camera performs well in outdoor settings, with a removable IR-cut filter for day and night functionality, IR illuminators effective up to lengths of 15 meters, and multiple stream capabilities.

Outfitting the Medical Center without Interrupting the Hospital Daily Operation

A

s hospitals never close, the greatest obstacle to outfitting the medical center was laying cables for the relocation of cameras without interrupting business as usual. The hospital in Ludhiana remained in full operation throughout the process, and the system integrator deftly managed to do the cabling without disturbing patients or damaging anything. It took a lot of manpower and hours, but in the end the installation was completed

All video streams captured by VIVOTEK’s cameras are fed through video management software called ST7501, enabling the user to fully control and manage the streams from a single location. Using ST7501, real-time remote monitoring, recording, playback and event trigger management functions can be operated by the user. Ultimately, the solution chosen by Fortis Healthcare guaranteed patient and visitors tracking, grounds surveillance, and general security of the hospital.

Completely satisfied with the Installation and performance Mr. AP Singh, regional IT head of Fortis Hospital, commented on the overall efficiency of VIVOTEK’s IP surveillance solution. “The system integrator did a really good job setting up the surveillance system despite the challenge of working in a hospital open 24-hours. Once the system was in place I was really impressed with the user friendliness of it all, particularly the way in which ST7501 software integrates everything into an easy to operate system.”

CP PLUS e-Surveillance Solution for Cash-in-Transit Vans

C

P-PLUS has successfully launched e-surveillance solution for cashin-transit vans. The solution is innovative and is based on out of the box ideas which ensure putting technology in use to secure cash-in-transit vans which carry cash and bullion to deliver at ATMs, branches, POS etc. The solution uses a mix of access controlled entry, GPS, CCTV, MDVR, and allows entry to only authorized and limited people. The system also tracks vehicle movement and triggers alerts in case of any alarming activity. Till recently, there was a lack of an effective access control system in cash delivery vans. Drivers and security staff could be entering through any doors, and there was hardly any check on their

activities. With no effective monitoring, therefore, it was hard to fix the responsibility on a single resource in case of casualty or theft. They could script anything in their favour such as accidents, attacks, or theft. A security system cannot fully rely on manual surveillance as it may be subjected to loitering, spoiling and similar manipulations. As a leading global security surveillance player, CP PLUS is aware of the challenges and pain areas for the financial institutions handling in-transit cash and bullion, and with their concerted efforts they were able to introduce the solution. The solution encompasses a dual authentication system, which works in integration with CCTV feeds and geo-

location on the GPS system. It implements a foolproof system by providing just one gate entry at a time with the authorized access control system. The solution deals with any emergency by raising an alarm and the van remains on the control room screen throughout its journey while on duty. Yogesh Dutta, COO, Aditya Infotech Ltd. said, “The monitoring of items and activities in motion and in-transit is more challenging than safeguarding them at a stationary location. It poses more threats when the items to be moved are valuables and bullion (precious metals like gold, silver and platinum). After incidences of tampering and hijacking vans in Delhi, the team was much aware of the challenges.

Muktesh Chander, IPS, Special Commissioner Police, Delhi while addressing the gap between technology and manpower stated, “There is requirement for more technical manpower in the Police for effective implementation of technology in police forces. The role of systems integrators is very important. There may be a need for a chief technology officer kind of a post in every police organisation.” Itai Elata, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Homeland Security Systems Integration, Verint Systems said, “To protect citizens and maintain routine city life, it is essential to gain a holistic picture of an event and get the right alerts at the right time.” Rakesh Asthana, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Surat City talked about their initiatives as part of Safe City projects. He mentioned the ‘Friends of Police’ and ‘Hawk Eye’ initiatives of Surat Police and said, “Surat CCTV project is

the first successful PPP project in India. There has been 27% reduction in crime after CCTVs were installed in Surat City. Surat has completed its Phase 1 of Safe City project, and Phase 2 of the project is going on.” The second day of Secure Cities focused essentially on the area of Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP), the rising threat of cyber attacks on industry, governmental databases, as well as defence. Furthermore, infrastructure in the private sector whose security remains a key area of concern and needs more focus was also broached. Speaking on this issue, Sachin Burman, Director of National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) explained in detail how the newly raised NCIIPC has been working in collaboration with several other government institutions and business organisations to create a viable and credible deterrence to protect and secure India’s critical information infrastructures. He also elaborated on

some of the critical legal changes that have been made by the Government to sternly deal with the rising threat of cyber terrorism. SN Pradhan ADG (CID), Jharkhand Police mentioned a very important point that almost 90% of the police force in India consists of constabulary which mostly has only matriculation as educational qualification and most have never even worked on computers. Therefore there are institutional issues in terms of inducting technologies in policing and making it easily adaptable for the police force. Apart from the cerebral discussion as part of the conference, there was also a simultaneous exposition in which several major technology companies including the likes of Panasonic, Motorola, Dell, NEC, Steria, Teleste, Verint, Tak Technologies, Indian Eye Security and Eye Watch participated, and showcased state-ofthe-art and sophisticated technological products and services.

Seagate Expands Broad PCIe Portfolio with Two New Flash Accelerator Cards Latest Nytro PCIe flash products designed for adoption by 1U server market and for thermally challenging environments

S

eagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) has announced the expansion of its Seagate® Nytro® XP6000 product family with the introduction of two new PCIe flash accelerator cards – the Nytro XP6302 and XP6209 cards. The new cards are designed to address market demands both for high performance and high capacity in a smaller form factor and for thermally challenging environments, such as low-profile servers with lower airflows. The new Nytro XP6302 card delivers high PCIe flash capacity with competitive performance characteristics in a half-height form factor. The Nytro XP6302 card is designed for optimal density and for graceful performance scaling for high thread count and queue depth workloads. The second expansion to the Nytro portfolio, the XP6209 card adds a new 1.86TB capacity point doubling the capacity. The new 1.86TB SKU addresses customers’ needs for increased capacity density in low-profile and thermally optimized hyper-converged designs. These new PCIe flash cards are members of the third generation of Nytro® solutions that expand its broad port-

folio of PCIe-based flash accelerator products. This broad range of products enables data center architects to select the right solution for their unique requirements to support everything from hyperscale cloud and enterprise data centers, to big data, virtual desktops and varying server workloads. “Our ongoing innovation in the Nytro product line continues to propel our leadership in PCIe flash acceleration solutions,” said Manish Muthal, Seagate, Vice President of Marketing, Planning, Architecture and PCIe Flash Solutions, “Given the migration towards hyperconverged infrastructure and the vast computing and storage resources needed to churn through massive amounts of information emanating from the cloud, big data, and hyperscale datacenters, high-performance and high capacity solutions in small footprint are a necessity. The products are available from select Seagate original equipment manufacturers and through the Seagate worldwide network of distributors, integrators and VARs.

Announces

A Technology Upgrade to its NetAXS-123 Web-based Modular Access Control System Newest version of Honeywell’s NetAXS-123 access control system reduces installation and service costs using Ethernet Virtual Loop Technology

H

oneywell (NYSE: HON) has announced a technology upgrade to its NetAXS-123 webbased modular access control system to make it easier for small to mid-size businesses to secure their doors. Ethernet virtual loop (EVL) technology uses a single IP address to talk to multiple control panels, making installation fast and simple. This simpler installation process, which allows installers use their customers’ existing local area networks (LAN) with Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), eliminates the requirement to run a dedicated wire loop to each control panel providing added cost benefits to the end user. “Running wire takes time and money, so being able to use an existing LAN greatly reduces time and costs for both the installer and the end-user,” said Daniel Wan, UK Channel Marketing

Director. NetAXS-123 control panels drive down costs by eliminating the need for multiple cables to be installed and run from a distant location. The new control panels provide a streamlined solution allowing cables to be installed just a few feet from the control panel for the lock, reader, egress and door contact. This results in lower installation costs and faster install times. October 2014

55

With multiple enclosure options available, businesses are able to select features and capabilities that best suit their business needs. NetAXS-123 also offers the scalability to easily and affordably expand the system one door at a time allowing businesses to upgrade their access control system and add additional features as and when required. Through EVL and the LAN, there is no longer a need to configure each NetAXS-123 control panel individually. Instead, the control panels are automatically discovered and linked together. As a result, multiple NetAXS-123 panels can be connected seamlessly and updates can be issued automatically to the entire system, such as access card additions and rule changes providing business with a simpler security system.

be deployed more easily and faster than previously possible. Federation: Federation works by allowing the creation of multiple standalone IPSecurityCenter PSIM deployments and establishing a link between them. IPSecurityCenter will synchronize any required objects from one to the other in order to facilitate the supported functionality. Video Export: IPSecurityCenter Video Export takes the complexity out of exporting video from a mixed set of sources and locations. It allows operators to choose evidence sources for export in a variety of ways including selecting cameras from a map, from cameras related to an incident, from a list of favorites or by searching for a specific camera. The operator can

select the desired destination for the exported video and IPSecurityCenter will schedule, create and advise when files are ready. Advanced Alarm Correlation: The correlation engine enables the aggregation of information from multiple events into a single alarm. In isolation, these events may hold little significance but when combined, however, they may pose a significant risk to a business. Enhancements in IPSecurityCenter V4.9 allow the engine to create correlated alarm types, enabling multiple events to be grouped and advanced conditions specified for evaluating these events. Improved Mapping: Several new features added to IPSecurityCenter

improve the mapping capabilities. This includes the new importer, which enables the handling of large-scale maps with minimal image processing, as well as other enhancements to the zoom feature and the dedicated mapping toolbar. “With over a decade of development, IPSecurityCenter leads the PSIM market with its features, performance and sophistication. These latest enhancements will help us to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the control room,” Jon Lunnerfeldt, Product Manager at CNL Software comments, “We continue to invest heavily in developing the features that customers, partners and industry leaders inspire us to create.”

Launches

M

Its New VMS Version Mirasys 7.2

irasys Ltd., one of the leading suppliers of open platform video management and visual intelligence solutions, launches the Mirasys VMS (Video Management System) version 7.2. In this new version Mirasys continues the path of easiness, improving the usage of alarms, video content analytics, and client-side support for 360-cameras. For example, the new Spotter client application 360-camera de-warping (image straightening) support is for cameras with an ImmerVision lens, and OnCam Grandeye, Pelco or Samsung 360-camera models without on-board (edge) dewarping. Mirasys 7.2 version’s enhanced

alarm feature now permits unlimited numbers of recipients or groups, and to set any recipients for each different alarm type individually. Also, it is easy to automatically include snapshot images of alarm-related camera footage. Not only has VCA usage improved, but also configuration is easier. It is possible to use any analog or IP video camera for VCA, and for multiple streaming cameras any video stream. It is also possible to mix multiple VCA types (including the ANPR+ number plate recognition) on the same server, and assign freely to the cameras. “There are several changes which further improve VCA usage in Mirasys software. In Spotter, the Mirasys client

application, VCA counting line and zone visualization has been improved for easy visual tracking. Also a simple user interface-level counter has been added into Spotter. This is helpful for getting a quick view of the analytics in operation, and observing the counters manually for arbitrary periods,” says Petri Bäckström, Security Product Line Director at Mirasys Ltd., “I believe that by raising the ease of VCA use to a new level inspires further the utilization of our VCA’s many features. Also this version’s more versatile alarm management and integration capabilities for (security) operations strengthen further our already comprehensive VMS.”

Sicurezza Prepares for 2014 Edition E

New Exhibition Already Announced For 2015

nergy and information technology networks, the system of health care, the financial world, food and water supplies, transport and treatment of hazardous substances, local government offices: day in, day out, technology and security providers work to ensure the continued operations of the so-called ‘critical infrastructures’ of our world by deploying their specialized personnel and cutting-edge applications. This is a growing industry, both in Italy (+1% in 2013) and abroad, that touches not only upon public places, but also our homes, places of culture, retail outlets and banks. Technology and security are increasingly important features in cities and in towns, whatever their size.

The latest facts and figures for 2014

S

ICUREZZA, the International Biennial of Security and Fire Prevention will open its doors in less than two months, and run from 12 to 14 November at Fiera Milano (the Milan Trade Fair Centre). This year it can boast some impressive statistics: already, the number of direct exhibitors equals the total of 2012, and the exhibition space has been expanded by around 15% compared with the previous edition. Similarly, the presence of foreign exhibitors has grown, both in terms of the exhibition space they are occupy-

ing (+60%) and in terms of the number of exhibitors themselves (+50%), who hail from 26 countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, Korea, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, UK and USA).

Initiatives to support business development abroad

O

ne of the objectives of an event such as SICUREZZA is to provide companies with tools they can use to develop their business in Italy and abroad. In light of this, and responsive to the demands of the companies themselves, the SICUREZZA organization has taken steps to bring to the Fair 107 top selected buyers from 27 countries (Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, France, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Morocco, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, Tunisia and Ukraine). This initiative will certainly

October 2014

72

help businesses that want to explore new boundaries and build contacts with markets, especially those of the East, the Middle East and North Africa, where demand for security is growing. Further, to facilitate contacts between buyers and companies interested in expanding their turnover, SICUREZZA 2014 is offering participants the chance to use the Expo Matching Programme (EMP), a software platform through which exhibitors and buyers can meet virtually beforehand so that they may choose the partners for their business and conduct more productive meetings at the event itself.

The new formula for 2015

W

ith an eye to the potential synergies with the Milan Expo 2015, Fiera Milano has also announced a major new departure: beginning from next year, SICUREZZA, which for 30 years has been held on even-numbered years, will be held on odd years, a schedule that better fits the international calendar. After 2014, therefore, the next edition will be on 16-18 September 2015. In the words of Roberto Foresti, Commercial, International and Development Director of Fiera Milano, “Every edition of the event is and must continue to be an instrument in the service of the market. To be sure, SICUREZZA has already achieved important goals, but we cannot stop here. Our task is to stimulate the sector into finding

new areas of development, anticipating trends and identifying the needs of producers and users. That is why, after hearing the opinions of the companies through a Demoskopea poll, we have chosen to take a fresh step forward. Not only will SICUREZZA have a new calendar slot, but we are also planning on the expansion of several sectors to which we must pay attention in this age of the ‘internet of things.’ This, in addition to the high level of technology and the quality of design of products made in Italy, will lend the event an increasing international appeal and render it capable of competing with other major trade shows.” Thus, in addition to security, which remains the core business of SICUREZ-

D

ZA 2015, attention will be given to the ‘internet of things,’ by which inanimate objects will become smart and capable of talking to each other so that everything, from infrastructure and industry to individuals, will be connected to a digital device and a network. In this interconnected world, we cannot afford to neglect the transversal importance of security, which is becoming increasingly integrated with other systems and has extended its reach into other synergistically related areas. For this reason, one of the sectors that is set to expand from next year is home automation and intelligent buildings, i.e., the integrated management of all the operating systems of

a building in order to ensure greater efficiency and sustainability. Another is cyber security, which in an increasingly connected world is becoming central to ensuring online business activity and for countering the frequent and sophisticated attacks on banks and institutions; another is road safety, which encompasses everything from urban lighting solutions to special vehicles and GPS systems. In addition to these is the range of fire protection products and services, which comprise not only fire detection but also extinguishing systems; and various safety devices, i.e. apparatuses for personal safety, accident prevention and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Dahua 720p Vari-focal HDCVI Cameras Available on the Market

ahua Technology introduces two new vari-focal HDCVI cameras – 720p IR box camera HAC-HFW1100R-VF and IR dome HAC-HDBW1100R-VF, which further completes its HDCVI portfolio. These two vari-focal HDCVI cameras output clear and crisp images 25/ 30 frame per second at 720p, and their focal length reaches 2.7-12mm, allowing a more flexible monitoring view, which means, one single camera can be adjusted for different target areas based on users’ needs, and it only takes three steps to get focus-adjusting done: first, open the cover; second, loosen, rotate and fasten the screws inside, and third, put the cover back. This super ease-

of-use is quite favored among smallto-medium scaled application owners who, for example, run retail stores, SOHO, hotel or manage a school or an organization, asking for high definition image quality while having a budget concern. Meanwhile, the camera’s IR distance is up to 30 meters, providing excellent October 2014

night monitoring performance thanks to smart IR algorithm, which features non-LDR (lightdependent resistor) technology, enabling an intelligent algorithm to detect more accurate timing of ICR filter switching on/ off as well as to adjust the IR LEDs current for better visual effect under lowlight scenarios. What’s more, the three-axis bracket design of box camera HAC-HFW1100R-VF makes the camera 360-degree rotatable, allowing no dead angles while monitoring. The IP66 rating protects cameras against water and dust, and the IK10 rated dome can withstand vicious sabotage. “HDCVI is picking up very promisingly and customers start to expect more,” said John Li, HDCVI Product

The Gateway to Smart Security in the Home T

he word ‘Smart Home’ continues to be kicked around, but what does it truly mean for home security? The answer, change. For years, consumers have depended on the services of traditional monitoring stations and alarm companies. Equipment was simple and easy to use, and did what it needed to do. Then in 2007, came the first iPhone from Apple Inc., one of the first cell phones to deploy a multi-touch interface and in 2008 the release of Android, an open-source platform. Two releases that have changed the way in which consumers interact, not only with each other but other devices. Fast forward to 2014, the alarm industry is now in a period of change. On the back of smartphone deployments, alarm companies are now offering consumers the ability to interact with the equipment in their home. Forget to lock the door or close the garage? No problem, with a smartphone, the homeowner can resolve this issue with a click of a

button. However, with new technology, comes new entrants and security companies now face stiff competition from other suppliers wanting to make a play in the home. With so much change and choice, where does the consumer turn? In its analysis of the ‘Smart Home’ in relation to security equipment, IHS has identified three models that consumers can chose from when rolling out a ‘smart’ security system. The first security deployment type is ‘point security’, defined as hardware that does not link to other devices in order to generate automation, with each device having its own application. For example, many of the Z-Wave and WiFi garage door modules used today are often used independent of a total solution. Additionally, all-in-one devices such as Piper are defined as point security products even though there are capabilities to integrate more pieces of hardware. The second type is ‘connected se-

October 2014

78

curity’, which is a traditional burglar alarm system. All devices are connected to a panel, either hard-wired or wireless; with limited automation in place. Lastly, ‘smart security’ is defined as devices that are linked together through one central point and one application can manage all devices. To date, globally, ‘connected security’ has gained the largest traction on the back of traditional monitoring companies. However, more recently, the market has seen a shift and a movement towards smart security and point security (mostly across North America) as more DIY vendors appear in the market and end-users demand a seamlessly integrated home. As this trend to ‘smart’ takes place, IHS expects point security to benefit and grow since many of these products are used individually prior to being deployed in a single integrated solution. As a result, IHS anticipates that point security could

INTERNATIONAL UPDATES

be a gateway to more ‘smart’ systems. Overall, these three deployment types are important since they could help shape the future structure of the industry. For example, point security could be a gateway to bigger solutions and more

integration within the home as end-users become accustomed to these devices. Alternatively, connected security has the longest track record, yet has failed to increase the overall penetration rate. As a result, the combination of point

security, which often involves startups and little to no brand recognition, with connected security, which often involves long standing and proven brands, will likely lead to the new market of smart security.

The Physical Security Interoperability Alliance

Details Milestones Achieved in Physical Logical Access Interoperability (PLAI) Specification

T

he Physical Security Interoperability Alliance (PSIA) recently announced it has achieved important new milestones within its Physical Logical Access Interoperability (PLAI) specification less than a year after forming a Working Group to develop it. PLAI is being designed to enable employee identities and roles defined or revoked in an authoritative logical identity system to automatically propagate to one or more PLAI-compliant physical access control systems (PACS). PLAI synchronizes physical and logical identity management and access control and standardizes functions that typically have required custom programming to achieve. PLAI now can accomplish the following: ● Compatibility with PACS from multiple vendors. ● Enables initial registration of an employee from an authoritative source (IT or HR logical directory) to the PACS. ● Establishes role-based privileges at the authoritative source and propagates this logical privilege data throughout multiple PACS. ● Propagates the credential information (both in the form of cards or upcoming mobile credentials) of an employee from one PACS to others,

thus supporting enhanced access control at multiple facilities. ● Easily invokes and revokes physical access privileges in multiple PACS. PLAI asserts roles defined by an authoritative source (HR or IT) so these roles do not need to be redefined in the PACS. The use of a single authoritative source by multiple PLAI-enabled PACS ensures the validity and synchronization of an employee’s physical and logical identity data. “The PLAI Working Group has achieved a great deal of important functionality that adds tremendous value to access control systems,” said Mohammad Soleimani, Chairman of the PSIA, head of the PLAI Working Group and CTO and Executive Vice President at Kastle Systems, “By being PLAI-compliant, access control vendors can offer security end users a streamlined, standard means of synchronizing physical and logical identities and their access privileges. The PSIA is pleased to offer the industry a cost effective, intelligent solution to a perennial challenge.” “Mohammad has been instrumental in taking this from concept to an active working group in a very short time. The PLAI initiative was demonstrated as a proof-of-concept at ISC West earlier October 2014

82

this year and now has a very dynamic group of physical security leaders developing implementations that could be rolled out commercially in the near future,” said David Bunzel, Executive Director, the PSIA, “That’s a testament to our members and their dedication, and the PSIA’s focus on solving significant industry issues.” The PLAI Working Group member companies are Allegion, Honeywell, Inovonics, Kastle Systems, Mercury Systems, Microsoft Global Security, STANLEY Security and UTC/ Lenel.

Physical-logical identity interoperability issue backgrounder

I

n most businesses, logical employee identities and physical access credentials are managed by two separate departments. The logical security, generally managed by the IT department and or Human Resources, is responsible for assigning ‘logical’ access privileges to employees, such as computer login credentials and network and data access. The physical security department in turn manages the physical access credentials – identity badges and tokens etc. – employees receive that permit access to various locations, from a data center to a regional or international office.

The problem

T

hese logical identity management system and the physical access control systems are usually completely separate. Maintaining physical and logical identity security data at two different places leads to gaps in the security model, is operationally inefficient, and provides little hope of securing either one. For example: ● Organizations are challenged to effectively manage employee credentials and limit security risks. This process now typically involves HR defining privileges and transferring this information to the security group, which manually inputs the information needed to issue a credential. With PLAI, this process is performed one time in HR and no longer needs a second data entry step that can introduce errors. ● Until recently, this process involved expensive custom programming, which enabled these systems to automatically share meaningful identity data, such as that an employee in Role X should only have physical ac-

cess to Facility B. The systems based on such programming are expensive to maintain and upgrade. ● The resulting physical access credential is static and does not easily permit dynamic changes in privileges. This problem is compounded when employees’ logical roles change, affecting physical access rights; when they travel to different company locations running different PACS; or they leave the company. ● Another issue is making sure the physical and logical security data are in sync. Maintaining two sets of user data can lead to loopholes in the security model, is inefficient, and increases security risks.

The PSIA’s solution

T

he PSIA introduced its Physical Logical Access Interoperability (PLAI) specification in 2013. This protocol will provide a means for organizations to transfer and dynamically update relevant employee data and privileges from the ‘logical’ HR system to any Physical Access Control System (PACS)

being operated at various company facilities. PLAI is a standards-based specification and leverages the LDAP v3 interface to support a number of logical identity directories, including Active Directory.

Features/ benefits of PLAI

● More efficient onboarding process for employees. ● Instantaneous invoking and revoking of security privileges across disparate physical access control systems. ● Ability to support logical privileges and physical access in multiple business locations and campuses. ● Supports temporary access credentials when employees travel to remote sites. Syncs security access with different physical locations. ● Ability to minimize risk because all logical and physical access privileges are based on a single authoritative source (e.g., it is impossible for a PLAI-compliant PACS to contain two versions of an active employee’s name because it is drawing the employee identities from the authoritative IT/ HR source.)

Integrated EWC Detection Equipment to

Improve Embassy and Consulate Security

O

verall, governments appear to be expanding, rather than abandoning, diplomatic operations in high risk countries, resulting in the need to integrate data from multiple security systems. As a result, IHS anticipates the explosives, weapons and contraband (EWC) detection equipment market is poised to see continued growth as governments look for integrated security

solutions to protect embassies and consulates from evolving threats. In its newest study on the market for EWC detection equipment for critical infrastructure facilities, IHS found the embassy and consulates market to be worth more than $53 million globally and to have a CAGR of 7.3% over the next five years. Due to continued threats of terrorism at foreign missions abroad

many governments have increased security funding for their embassies and consulates worldwide. In the US, State Department funding for embassy security increased in 2013, to more than $25.6 million (an increase of $2.8 million over 2012 funding). IHS expects this increase to result in purchases of new baggage and parcel, and people screening equipment that

will be integrated with other security solutions including perimeter and access control systems. Historically, embassies and consulates globally used standalone people screening equipment (i.e., fixed or hand-held metal detectors, and X-ray equipment, not integrated with other technologies) but this is starting to change. While in the past, the value of the data obtained by these systems was not realized by embassies and consulates; today, threats to embassies and consulates have become more sophisticated, requiring integration of security systems in order to provide earlier and better detection of threats. With integrated EWC detection technology becoming more desirable, embassies and consulates are starting to look for more data from their security systems to aid in analyzing threats and

developing countermeasures. Therefore, manufacturers are designing systems that can be integrated, whereas older systems were never expected to be connected to larger security systems. IHS also anticipates the global opportunity to increase from 2014 through 2018, as several embassy projects near completion over this time period, which will include new software to integrate people screening, and baggage and parcel equipment with other security solutions. In recent years, the US, China, and other countries have abandoned diplomatic missions in countries deemed too dangerous to conduct diplomatic affairs. Although, diplomatic missions in some countries remain dangerous, countries are deciding to reopen embassies and consulates to improve dip-

lomatic relations. For example, in 2014, China announced plans to reopen their previously closed embassy in Somalia. IHS expects projects like this to contribute to a 5.8% CAGR in the people screening market and a 4.8% CAGR in the baggage and parcel market over the next five years. Despite increases in the number of attacks against diplomatic missions over the past fourteen years, casualty rates have declined. IHS has attributed this to better situational awareness and security measures at embassies and consulates. IHS expects that the use of integrated EWC detection equipment in the future will aid in minimizing the impact of terrorist attacks against diplomatic facilities as multiple data points will increase the situational awareness of diplomatic security services.

Milestone Systems Adds Support for Offline Camera Recording Using ONVIF The latest Device Pack from Milestone adds support for ONVIF Edge Storage in XProtect video management software

to achieve the optimal interaction between their devices and the XProtect VMS. This ensures the highest quality for a video surveillance solution, which is important for total system operability, efficiency and stability. Milestone is constantly promoting driver standards like ONVIF and remains dedicated to support the broadest range of cameras and devices on the market. “This is yet another testimonial of the power of open platform technology," says Christian Bohn, Milestone Systems VP Corporate Marketing & Alliances, “This rapid implementation of ONVIF Edge Storage is a clear illustration of our dedication to giving our partners the broadest and most comprehensive device support in the market – now and in the future. Milestone will continue to

drive video enabling business by utilizing such possibilities in open platform technology.” The device support in XProtect reach-

es beyond digital video devices because the software also has comprehensive support for encoders which allow analog cameras to be connected to the VMS. Support for 15 new encoders from Bosch, Ateme, Mango DSP, UDP Technology and ACTi has been added in this version of the Device Pack, lifting the number of supported encoders to well over 200. The extensive encoder support in Device Pack 7.5 combines positively with Milestone’s recent change in encoder licensing which offers end users and partners an easy and cost-effective transition from analog to IP technology. The new licensing model only demands one license per encoder unit, as opposed to the industry norm of one license per connected camera.

Mobile PERS Driving Growth in the United States

T

he North American PERS (Personal Emergency Response Systems) service market is forecast to grow from $700 million in 2014 to $1.5 billion in 2019. The main market drivers are a growing elderly population and the increased use of mPERS, according to a recently published report from IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS). PERS using traditional telephone lines remains the largest segment of the market. However, as the United States begins to move away from POTS-based communication in the home, home

phones will be replaced by either voice over internet protocol (VoIP) or cellular phones; limiting the number of potential in-home fixed customers. Furthermore, mPERS is predicted to attract younger users, meaning users are unlikely to transfer to a fixed product if they are already familiar with the more flexible mPERS products.

Other Key findings of the report include:

Gexcon Heralds Next Generation of Fire Risk Modelling with Release of FLACS-Fire G

exCon, a world leader in sophisticated and user-friendly dispersion, explosion and fire modelling software, has announced the release of a landmark software package, FLACS-Fire. Tailormade for the oil and gas, processing, and industrial segments, FLACS-Fire combines optimal usability with an unparalleled ability to generate detailed models of jet and pool fires. With over 35 years of experience in developing safety and risk management software, GexCon is a globally recognised authority in its field. FLACS, first released in 1986, is the industry standard in 3D CFD (computational fluid dynamics) gas dispersion and explosion modelling software, and FLACS-Fire completes its hazard modelling capability. “Fire modelling has been the missing link for our users, particularly in the offshore oil and gas segment, where high momentum jet fires and pool fires are major hazards,” comments GexCon Vice President Products, Djurre Siccama. “This new software, which can be

Navtech Radar Showcases Advance Guard with new Witness Software The world leading Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) for airports is now installed at 16 Major European Airports

avtech Radar, the world leading supplier of radar based Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS) for airports, has showcased their AdvanceGuard PIDS solution with a brand new version of the sophisticated Witness software at the Security Essen show in Germany September 23-26 2014. With more than 1,000 exhibitors and visitors

and/or temporary closure of an airport. Commercial Airports typically have very large perimeters many in excess of 15km, which are expensive and difficult to secure, especially in adverse weather conditions. Navtech Radar’s frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) 76GHz technology is ideally suited to the challenge. The robust design of

from 115 countries, in a booming security market, the bi-annual show in Essen is Europe’s largest Security fair, and the ideal platform for showcasing Navtech’s unique, cost-effective Airport PIDS solution. Business Development Manager Jason Burger at Navtech Radar said, “Preventative security measures are crucial for passenger safety and confidence as stipulated by the ICAO and EU (300/2008 and 2320/2002) regulations. Uninterrupted running of airport operations is imperative, as unlawful interference culminating in a security breach, can result in huge operating losses due to the evacuation process

the radars, coupled with the ability to operate 24 /7 in all light and weather conditions, even in dense fog, make AdvanceGuard the preferred technology for the challenges faced by airport operations and security services. With low installation and ongoing maintenance cost, the overall cost of ownership is very competitive compared to traditional fence detection systems. Navtech’s radar surveillance technology can deliver further cost-saving by re-addressing the balance between technology and manned security guarding. With 360° radius detection offering a range of up to 1000 metres man detection, Navtech’s radar systems are October 2014

the perfect solution for perimeter and critical security restricted area (CSRA) surveillance. Multiple overlapping radar sensors can be networked to offer site wide security coverage, controlled and monitored via a single PC running Navtech Radar’s sophisticated physical security information management (PSIM) software – Witness.” With more than 16 European airports currently using AdvanceGuard and 3 more on order and under installation, Navtech Radar used the Essen show to showcase the new version of Witness. Witness manages all system functions; from analysing movement to creating target ‘tracks’ and controlling cameras to follow them, to handling the complex algorithms in the security rule engine which analyses target behaviour, assigns threat levels and allow security staff to define alarm zones and the rules that trigger them. Witness includes Sentinel, the intuitive on-screen security interface. Sentinel allows users to draw – or revise – alarm zones and their associated rules. At the simplest level, it can replace physical barriers using ‘virtual fences, or access points’ which alarm when objects enter them, travel in the wrong direction within them, or pass through, out of hours. The new version of Witness was completed earlier this year, and has already been implemented at Ostrava Airport. However, the Essen show is the first time the new Witness Software was showcased to a wider security audience.

Hikvision Ensures ‘Fun Safe Philly Summer’ for City of Philadelphia

ikvision has teamed up with the City of Philadelphia to ensure success of their ‘Fun Safe Philly Summer’ initiative. The program connects youth and their families to free and lowcost summer activities, including many events at the recreation centers spread throughout the city. With the safety of the community in mind, the city council

has pledged significant budget investment to outfit all 140 centers with CCTV by 2016. After careful evaluation of all the products on the market, Hikvision’s high-performance cameras, NVRs, and VMS technology were selected as a cost-effective solution to protect the city with cutting-edge video surveillance. With over 600 facilities serving thouOctober 2014

sands of people each year, the Department of Parks and Recreation worked closely with City of Philadelphia Engineer Pedro Pinto to develop a high standard for CCTV design criteria. A primary concern was finding a system that could stay intact as existing infrastructure was gradually upgraded throughout the city. “The system needed to be scalable

and had to be networked at some point in the future,” explained Sheeba Money, Special Systems Designer at Arora Engineers, Inc., a firm involved with CCTV design for the City of Philadelphia, “With every department of the city operating on a different system, it was crucial to provide a video surveillance solution in the rec centers that could be linked into a central management system.” Because Hikvison’s Video Management Systems easily communicate with each other and with systems made by other manufacturers, the feature-rich, reliable, VMS 4200 was a perfect fit. The video surveillance systems have been hugely successful in keeping the centers safe. In most cases, the presence of the cameras alone has been enough to prevent crime. Susan Slawson, Deputy Commissioner of Parks and Recreation noted, “Where we were faced with vandalism, loitering, and burglaries before, the numbers decreased immediately once we outfitted our facilities with cameras.

We don’t just want a ‘fun, safe, Philly summer;’ we want a fun, safe, Philly. With introduction of Hikvision video surveillance equipment, not only are we covering our sites, we can tell what’s going on in the streets and coordinate with the police department if need be,” Commissioner Slawson, herself a 20-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department, affirmed. Superior image quality from the Hikvision cameras plays a key role. “We have good video,” Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey confirmed, “That should help us a great deal.” Fidelity Alarm installed the DS2CD7254FWD-E 3MP outdoor network camera in several of the rec centers due to the camera’s wide dynamic range and

true day/ night functionality. “In addition to gathering footage from the immediate vicinity, it captures clear images from as far away as across the street,” explained Pat Phillips, Sales Manager at Fidelity Alarm. This month’s shooting at the Dell Music Center is a tragic example of criminal activity dealing a blow to the community, but the police had a head start on the investigation due to cameras stationed on the building’s exterior by Fidelity Alarm. Footage was provided to the police and images were released to the public so that the perpetrators could be swiftly identified. Jeffrey He, President of Hikvision USA remarked, “Hikvision is proud to provide versatile, convenient, and efficient video surveillance solutions to the City of Philadelphia. Hikvision technology protects our society’s most invaluable asset – our young people – in municipalities across the U.S. and Canada. As we continue to rapidly expand, we look forward to bringing even more success stories to the North American market.”

biometrics, and EMV payment, the Nigerian eID card represents an innovative next generation of identity documents. This eID project outweighs the German electronic identity card (nPA) in both the size of the project and the variety of applications. In order to secure both the eID card and the backend infrastructure, the Nigerian eID leverages one of the largest and most complex Public Key Infrastructures (PKI) in the world. It includes at least eight certification authorities, and about a dozen different certificate types, and will eventually host over 100 million Nigerian citizens and legal residents over the age of 16.

This PKI represents the backbone and the security base of the Nigerian eID system. Not only does it provide digital certificates for the card holders to use for digital signature and authentication, but it also ensures that only authorized devices have access to the eIDchip for reading personal data. By employing advanced authentication mechanisms, fine grained permissions allow for authorized systems to read and even update personal eID chip data at specified agencies. Operating such an advanced PKI depends on one of the most powerful PKI solutions available. The Nigerian Identity Management Commission has

selected the product CAmelot provided by German-based vendor cryptovision. The continued deployment and growth of the PKI proceeds at full speed. The cryptovision specialists are always available to support the certificate provisioning work and support the ongoing eID deployment process. cryptovision CEO Markus Hoffmeister is pleased, “We are proud that our PKI software CAmelot is used in one of the most exciting e-ID projects of our days.” cryptovision is a world-leading specialist for cryptography and electronic identity solutions. Illinois State Police Choose Raytec IR

T

he Illinois State Police Department have chosen Raytec’s award-winning VARIO infra-red LED illuminators to provide high performance surveillance lighting for an urban concert park. With large public events regularly taking place in the park, good lighting was required to improve CCTV image quality for ensuring public safety and reducing crime. The previous street lighting along the park’s pathways did not provide op-

timal illumination for night time surveillance. It produced a highly uneven spread of light and was not aligned with the camera field of view, leading to poor quality, unusable images with insufficient detail and dark areas. This resulted in some areas of the park being unmonitored and open for vandalizing. Furthermore, the park surveillance system requires regular modification for different events, so a lighting solution was needed that could be quickly adaptOctober 2014

tec VARIO Infra-Red illuminators as the clear winners.” “The VARIO IR illuminators produced crisp and clear illumination and excellent CCTV images at night without bright or dark spots, with an illumination range that spanned further than its opponents while requiring less power.” VARIO holographic lens technology with Hotspot Reduction Technology provided the even light distribution needed for the camera system to provide clear, sharp and detailed images of the scene at night. Choosing an infra-red LED solution also meant that there would be zero light pollution and no disturbance to the park events. Power consumption was also a key factor in choosing the illuminators for

this project. VARIO Illuminators were able to deliver an outstanding performance up to 310m (1010ft) with minimal environmental impact, consuming significantly less power than competing illuminators. VARIO i8 models were specially integrated into an all-in-one camera and lighting system from Mobile Pro for ease of transport and installation on site. “Our systems are based on mobility and rapid deployment so we also needed a robust illuminator that could be adjusted on the fly without the need of a service technician,” further comments Joe, “VARIO’s interchangeable lens filters allowed us to easily change the beam angle on site for the highest level of flexibility on demand. We are delighted to say that the Raytec

product line has become a standard offering on all of the Mobile Pro Systems.” The Illinois Police Department commented, “The Raytec lighting technology has allowed us achieve a fit for purpose system with minimal environmental impact, and has greatly reduced system setup time. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results.”

aving to abide by and work with technology and/ or product choices made remotely by a head office can sometimes be a challenge for branch locations. The local situation or circumstances may be slightly different than corporate or the feature set of the product may not exactly meet everyone’s requirements, leading to a less than satisfactory solution. This was not the case however for the Hyatt Regency Dallas which re-

cently implemented the Morse Watchmans KeyWatcher Touch™ key control and asset management system per the key management policy set by corporate head office. According to Moses Barrera, Director of Security for the Hyatt Regency Dallas, the KeyWatcher Touch system features are exactly what they need to ensure key accountability and accurate reports which ultimately add to the hotel’s reputation for excellence. “A commitment to unparalleled October 2014

cured in a locked tamper-proof cabinet and only authorized users can access those keys which they have been pre-approved to use. All key access activity is automatically documented so hotel management has an accurate record of who accessed keys and when. The system’s automatic e-mail notification provides Barrera with instant awareness when a key has not been returned as scheduled and can even be programmed to send an alert if a key has not been accessed per the regular schedule. Customized and scheduled PDF reports can be automatically e-mailed to authorized recipients or scheduled for any frequency or specific time. They can also be accessed using the Morse Watchmans smart phone app. The managing software package runs all programming, remote functions and reports while the server performs all synchronizations of transactions as well as maintaining the

SQL database. “We use the various reports to track trends as well as follow up on any incidents or questionable activities,” he added, “The system gives us the flexibility to collect and analyze the information for whatever best suits our needs.” Barrera confides that he had no doubts about the usability or performance of the Morse Watchmans technology based on his previous use of the key management equipment while he was located at the Grand Hyatt Seattle. The Dallas property also uses the Pow-

erCheck® Guard Tour Systems from Morse Watchmans and has had an equally positive experience with the system. The computerized PowerCheck Guard Tour System comprises a hand-held data recorder, checkpoint stations, and reporting software. The hand-held data recorder allows the hotel’s security personnel to input incident codes on site, using the built-in keypad and display. The Tour-Pro™ Data Sorting Software is a Windows® application which converts the data recorder information into custom reports that are used by Barrera’s department. “Information is key in a security operation and the solutions from Morse Watchmans that we are using here at the hotel give us the accurate information that we need, when we need it and how we need it,” adds Barrera, “It really helps to keep our side of the house running smoothly.”

Ocularis from OnSSI Enables Seamless Integration between Video Surveillance Systems at Atlanta’s Public Schools and Police Department Heightened situational awareness provides enhanced public safety and security

O

n-Net Surveillance Systems, Inc. (OnSSI) announced that the Atlanta Public School System (APS) has implemented OnSSI’s Ocularis video-centric PSIM (physical security information management), enabling the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to access surveillance cameras at the schools for improved situational awareness in the event of an incident or emergency. The highly efficient and cost-effective IP video surveillance solution is part of the school system’s initiative to upgrade its older analog cameras on an

ongoing basis. “This application leverages Ocularis’ ability to create a collaborative environment so that law enforcement can improve awareness and response to unfolding events,” said Gadi Piran, President, OnSSI, “This cooperative approach to security between these two separate entities has the potential to greatly improve safety and security at the city’s public schools.” Officers in the Video Integration Center monitor the police department’s radio system, located in the same site October 2014

as the emergency 911 system, so that Atlanta police are immediately aware if an emergency situation arises at one of the APS facilities. Operators are able to access cameras in that school to assess the situation and determine what, if any, response is needed. In the event of an emergency situation, dispatchers can continuously relay information gathered from the video to first responders to provide immediate situational awareness to assist in the response. “Being able to relay real-time situ-

ational awareness about what is happening inside a school to those in the field improves the effectiveness of the response. In addition, it ensures the safety of both first responders and those who are inside the school,” said Lt. Leanne Browning of the Atlanta Police Department, “The ability to push live video to our mobile command vehicle and allow those in the field to control the cameras and move them as needed is a powerful tool for mitigating the situation as quickly and safely as possible.” The system has also proven effective in non-emergency situations. Prior to implementation, the district faced a number of copper thefts from HVAC systems at schools. Thanks to the presence of cameras, motion detectors and increased lighting in previously vul-

G

nerable areas, the number of thefts has dropped dramatically. “Now that we have replaced most of our analog cameras with IP, we have all of the benefits of HD managed by OnSSI’s VMS technology,” said Charles Johnson, Building Integration/ Systems Programmer with APS, “We can simply add new cameras to our management server and they are automatically added to the base servers. This also has helped us save costs since we can utilize multiple camera manufacturers.” “The issue of safety in all schools is one that I consider to be very important,” said Olufemi Aina, Executive Director, IT Infrastructure & Production Services, Atlanta Public Schools, “The fact that the APD 911 Call Center now

has the ability to quickly access our video cameras to provide tactical support to officers in real-time (in an emergency) is something that I think all K-12 schools should consider or aspire to achieve. Being in the front seat of an initiative that impacts our kids in such a manner is personally satisfying.” Representatives from OnSSI, Atlanta Public Schools and the Atlanta Police Department will present a case study on this project at ASIS at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, September 29-October 2. A panel discussion will provide an in-depth look at how video management software has enabled the integration between the public schools’ and police department’s video surveillance systems to increase public safety and security.

MicroPower Technologies Introduces

Remote Network Surveillance

Solution that Extends Capabilities for Remote and Isolated Sites

M

icroPower Technologies Inc., an award-winning provider of surveillance solutions optimized for rapid, cost-effective deployment, has announced today the availability of remote network surveillance solutions designed for isolated or unmanned facilities, such as those commonly found in the oil and gas, water utility, critical infrastructure and power substations industries. An extension of the company’s solar, wireless surveillance technologies, this platform provides surveillance to sites that were previously unreachable by traditional systems. The power and cabling requirements of typical security products often disqualify the use of video for isolated, remote locales, which present unique and complex requirements. Due to the evolving risk factors presented by such facilities, video surveillance is necessary to help prevent terrorism, vandalism and crime as well as provide the ‘eyes on’ for operation management. The MicroPower wireless, solar-powered surveillance solution allows isolated sites to ensure security with applications

to help reduce deployment and infrastructure costs. The highly reliable and secure wireless solution does not require cabling for power or data transmission. This unique approach removes the restrictions experienced with traditional cameras and allows users to place cameras at remote sites without the added complexity of trenching or pulling data and power cables. Such design minimizes deployment time, eases ongoing maintenance requirements and reduces disruption to day-today business on site. The value of the investment can be extended further because video can be leveraged to ensure consistent and proper operation of devices, monitoring and systems at isolated sites. Additionally, MicroPower’s remote network surveillance solution enables organizations to shift from more situational awareness to situational assessment – for example, using images collected to determine whether a problem demands a maintenance crew or possibly first responders in case of an emergency. “MicroPower is constantly looking

for new ways to respond to application needs where previous solutions were unproductive,” said Dave Tynan, Vice President of Global Marketing and Sales, MicroPower Technologies, “Our innovative technologies offer these industries a well-tested solution that solves problems related to lack of infrastructure, while providing the ability to address these issues cost effectively and sustainably.” MicroPower Technologies is the global leader in solar-powered, wireless video systems for security, operations and business intelligence applications. Its unique solar and wireless design enables users to obtain coverage in areas previously unreachable by standard video systems. MicroPower revolutionizes outdoor video applications by reducing power consumption, expanding reach and lowering infrastructure costs. Designed for use in multiple industries including education, energy, logistics, oil and gas, construction and critical infrastructure markets, MicroPower enables users to gain a new level of visibility into their operations.

NUUO Retail Vertical Solution

hrinkage remains the No. 1 problem that retailers face and this issue becomes severer in uncertain economic situations. Shoplifters and employee theft are the top two sources of revenue shrinkage. As smaller margins hurt everyone from small business owners to international retail chains, retailers have started to pursue higher security levels to guard their profit and assets. In addition to decreasing shrinkage, NUUO understands retail surveillance needs and offers the recording solution tailored to any type of retail project. In this article, the retail requirements and the benefits from using

NUUO solution will be discussed in four categories: Decrease Shrinkage, Provide Safety and Security, Enhance Operation and Management, and Business Intelligence.

Choosing the right tools, bettering the work

N

UUO solution covers various types of retail projects and here we can

find the most suitable recording solution from a comprehensive lineup for bigbox retailers, retail chains, small retails, and shopping malls.

Big-box retail chain

B

ig-box retail chains such as supermarkets and warehouse retailers often have multiple stores and each store might have around 200 channels. NUUO CMS (central management system), which centrally manages multiple NUUO Main console recording servers, is suggested for this big scale project. NUUO Main console provides features like I/O, video analytics, and LPR (license plate recognition)

integration to detect and respond to events in time. Also, the POS integration helps enhance the management’s ability to monitor and highlight unusual transaction data.

Retail Chain

R

etail chains are like chained convenience stores and restaurants. While usually having multiple stores, the size of each store is rather limited to around 24 channels and due to the limited size of stores, the compact and simple NUUO NVRmini2 recorder is suggested. When video analytics are needed, the solution is NUUO Main console. Both NUUO NVRmini2 and NUUO Main console can be centrally managed by NUUO free central monitoring software, Remote Live Viewer, up to 128 channels.

Small retail

S

mall retail refers to small independent stores, for example, fashion boutiques or laundry stores. Its business scale ranges in single store and around 16 channels in each store. NUUO NVRmini2 suits this type of retail for its ease to get started, and tiny size. The events from I/O and POS can be detected and notification can be sent to the mobile phone to help the business owner be aware of the status in the store.

Shopping malls

S

hopping malls and spaces with high ceilings or wide areas to monitor present a bigger picture. NUUO Titan NVR handles megapixel and HD recording from cameras mounted high up with the fastest performance thanks to its 250Mbps throughput. Its ‘Image Fusion Technology’ helps monitor objects in wide areas seamlessly for places like parking lots.

Calculating the benefits Decrease shrinkage

A

s tackling shrinkage is a top priority for retailers, NUUO recording solution seamlessly integrates with POS systems. By metadata-searching the playback video and comparing the video with the POS transaction data, which is overlaid on the video, sweethearting employee theft can be easily dug out.

Provide safety and security

C

reating a safe and secure environment for shoppers is always an issue for retailers of any size. By applying I/O devices, video analytics, and LPR at critical areas such as cashiers, warehouses, and parking lots, NUUO surveillance solution detects and responds to the accidents, theft or robberies efficiently to protect the safety of the retailer’s customers and staff.

Enhance operations and management

W

hen a retailer’s business scope includes multiple stores, store managers can save time by watching multiple stores centrally through the Remote Live Viewer or CMS. Instead of shifting between the proprietary interfaces of recorders, management can utilize a single powerful platform. Along with monitoring video, they can integrate multiple POS servers, access control devices and LPR systems. Customers can do more with less hassle, thanks to a unified platform.

Mobile monitoring and notification

N

o matter where the store manager goes, keeping an eye on the business has never been easier. Should an event occur, the video system will imOctober 2014

mediately notify the manager by SMS text or e-mail, along with alerting related staff. Peeking into the store is just a swipe away by mobile devices or tablet from anywhere.

Future-proof scalability

N

etwork video management covers business requirements from the first store to countless locations worldwide. Smaller installations can start out with NUUO Main console or NUUO NVRmini2 recorders. Retailers with more sites can opt for NUUO CMS, offering centralized alarm management, advanced e-map, and built-in matrix video walls.

Business intelligence

R

etailers can use video footage not only to watch for a crime, but to serve customers better. Checkout counter footage overlaid with POS transaction data helps identify which products are top sellers or generate the most profit. Knowing what's hot affects shelf placement along with what type of merchandise is prominently displayed. Documenting foot traffic with NUUO Main console can help management adjust staffing levels to accommodate peak times, delivering an improved customer experience.

The sole solution to accompany your business growth

N

UUO Main console family meets the needs of the complete retail spectrum. It frees store management to expand, if necessary, and for retailers with multiple locations, remote central management is a breeze with NUUO Remote Live Viewer. Once a retailer adds more cameras, the transition to CMS is seamless.

Only if someone crosses the line and within a few seconds the same person enters the zone, an alarm is triggered. For example, when monitoring the entrance hall of a company which is entered by hundreds of employees and customers during the office hours, but which shouldn´t be entered by anyone outside the office hours, the video analytics only triggers an alarm detecting an object between 6pm to 6am. wireless transmission of video, as well as audio and data, has traditionally been achieved over the 5GHz frequency, but interference can become an issue where there are large number of radios in close proximity or where there are military installations close by. The good news is that the 60GHz frequency is uncongested, even in dense urban areas, and the use of a high-gain, pencil-beam antenna guarantees high spectrum availability.” As in the case with all SilverNet Point to Point, Point to Multipoint and Backhaul wireless transmission solutions, the Etherhaul range can easily be managed via the free SilverView wireless network management and monitoring software (NMS).
