Greetings from IndiaSAFE! As we rolled over from 2014 to the current year, security forces across the nation were kept on their toes by a variety of incidents and alerts as diverse as they were widespread – all these, of course, under the overall larger security threat ahead of US President Obama’s visit as Chief Guest at our Republic Day Parade this year. The Peshawar school massacre was a stark reminder that hatred knows no bounds and prompted the Home Ministry to send out an advisory for increased vigilance at vulnerable installations like schools and public transport, and led to a series of news debates on our own preparedness for a similar incident.

E-mails: editor@indiasafe.com spathak@indiasafe.com Website: www.indiasafe.com Ad-Sales Madhu Mullick adsales@indiasafe.com

The aviation industry in general and airports in particular are on high alert following a hijack threat to Air India, and the possibility of a repeat of the Kandahar hijack. A low intensity explosion in Bengaluru on 28 December taught the Karnataka police an important lesson – surveillance is a coordinated effort and merely getting private establishments to install CCTV cameras outside their premises is not adequate. The state police forces have now taken up the task of installing CCTV cameras on a war footing, and ensuring that no areas remain uncovered. And this year started with a bang – literally – with the interception of a suspicious fishing boat originating from Pakistan, whose crew preferred to set the boat on fire and sink with it rather than answer questions to Indian authorities. At the time of going to press, not many details were available. This month we bring you two important interviews – with the heads of G4S and ADI in India, as also a MOXA white paper on Rugged Monitors for Harsh Environments, and an Aimetis paper on Understanding Hidden VMS Solution Support Costs & Deployment Issues. We also carry a special write-up on some of the companies that exhibited at IFSEC India. 2015 looks challenging from the security point of view and we urge all our readers to tread carefully. Good luck and stay safe! With warm regards,

Skill the Tribal, Secure the Nation Private security sector focuses on tribal India as the next destination for manpower supply and deliberates its milestones and concerns at the 9th Security Skills and Leadership Summit 2014

Skill the Tribal, Secure the Nation’ was the central theme of the 9th Security Skills and Leadership Summit 2014, which was organised by the Central Association of Private Security Industry (CAPSI) and the Security Sector Skill Development Council (SSSDC) in New Delhi on December 12 and 13. The two-day annual summit saw ministers and officials of the central government, captains of the private security sector, industry thought leaders, top security companies, retired and senior police officials and other industry professionals participating and delving into the opportunities and challenges of the industry. CAPSI and SSSDC Chairman Kunwar Vikram Singh delivered the welcome speech and said the Private Security Sector (PSS) is a sunrise industry, with potential to be the second-largest employment generator in the country, and involved in skill development and employment of backward, economically weaker sec-

tions of the society, particularly from the rural and semi-urban areas of the country. He said, “The government’s focus on smart cities, infrastructure development, roads, airports and seaports would require a huge security workforce in times to come. We will require as many as 50 lakh security personnel in the next 5-6 years. With the addition of these 50 lakh security guards, the industry workforce base would cross 1 crore by 2020.” While inaugurating the summit, Haribhai P Chaudhary, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs said that the need for security arrangements of industrial complexes, offices, IT parks and other public infrastructure such as airports, metro stations, shopping malls and public utilities has grown manifold. He said, “In order to meet the rising demand, the private security services sector has significantly scaled its operational capabilities to supplement government machinery towards maintaining safety and security of January 2015

18

citizens and their assets. Now, the private security sector has to prepare itself for the next level of growth. We assure the industry to provide all required aid and assistance for its rosy future.” Addressing the inaugural session, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Parliamentary Affairs said, “The biggest challenge the private security industry is facing today is the deficiency of right kind of trainers for skill development. I believe that right training is a must for the private security services industry as it will strengthen the security workforce and industry as well. We are planning to tie up with the defence and paramilitary forces for right and relevant trainers in order to launch a mega skill development programme in the country. I am confident such new and meaningful measures will boost the image and efficiency of the industry.” Since the inception of the Private Security Agencies (Regulation)

Act 2005, it has become mandatory for state governments to appoint a State Controlling Authority to cover the legislation and to ensure that all security guards are trained and certified. Jual Oram, Minister of Tribal Affairs, observed that tribal people are the assets of the country in terms of their culture, honesty, skills, and competence. “The need of the hour is to provide them pertinent opportunities. I am happy that the private security sector and companies have taken a positive initiative in this direction. I urge the industry to create awareness about the vast employment opportunities the PSS offers,” he said. Kunwar Vikram Singh pointed out that hundreds of Jharkhand girls have already been trained under a successful pilot project of CAPSI. Besides, as many as 30,000 tribal youth have also been trained under Star scheme of the Government of India. Up-and-coming tribal youth would be trained through respective training centres in the states and their training will be done as per the National Occupational Standards developed by the Security Sector Skill Development Council. National Skill Development Corporation Chief Operating Officer, Atul Bhatnagar pointed that there is a demand-supply mismatch to the tune of 30 per cent so far as security workforce is concerned. The PSS needs a huge security force in the next few years particularly when manpower procurement and retention in the private security industry are very challenging, with increase in alternate employment opportunities and rapid rise in manpower requirement to support industry’s growth.

Despite the challenges, the security services industry is expected to continue with its growth momentum. Leading security services companies expect strong organic growth in manned guarding and cash services, and are increasing their capabilities in auxiliary services, the industry experts said, adding that the PSS has witnessed a spate of acquisitions and infusion of private equity funds in the past, and will continue to have significant potential in the future. Kunwar Vikram Singh further observed that the domestic private security services industry aims at registering over 20 per cent growth in the next few years and expects to double its market size to Rs 80,000 crore by 2020. The Rs 40,000 crore private security sector in India, which has over 15,000 security ser-

sion, veteran leader Shivraj Patil, Governor of Punjab, urged the private security sector to set up a Security Services University in the country in order to educate and train security personnel and prepare the fast-growing industry for the next level of growth. He suggested that CAPSI and SSSDC set up a Security Services University along the lines of Police University in Gujarat. “The private security sector has been growing for the past few years and the industry is doing a commendable job in providing security to society and the nation in its own way. But it is high time for the private security sector to prepare itself for the next level of growth on the back of robust education and training of security personnel. I would advise the indus-

vices firms, operates across 600 districts and directly employs about 70 lakh individuals, plans to achieve robust growth on the back of rising demand for manned guarding and cash services business. Addressing the valedictory ses-

try to establish a security university for providing relevant education and training to up-and-coming security personnel, and preparing the youth of the country to meet the requirements of the private security forces,” said Patil.

CP PLUS to Implement H.265 for Reduced Bandwidth Needs C

P PLUS Teknologix Labs is set to implement H.265/ HEVC standard in its upcoming range of video surveillance devices. H.265 standard offers various improvements over H.264, and its implementation has generated huge optimism towards the industry’s struggle for shortage of bandwidth, spectrum, storage, and the imminent need to take growing HD content for multi-platform delivery. A video coding format is a content representation format for storage or transmission of digital video content in data file or bit stream such as MPEG-2 Part 2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10), HEVC etc. H.264 offers 40%-50% bitrate reduction over MPEG-2, yet it has limitation of delivering HD content for broad-

cast and online. With the 4K/ Ultra-HD cameras being introduced as a revolution in video technology, the need for improved H.264 standard was overdue, and H.265 meets the need. H.265 or HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) doubles the data compression ratio compared to H.264/ MPEG-4 at the same level of video quality. Alternatively, it can provide substantially improved video quality at the same bitrate. It can support 8K Ultra HD or resolutions up to 8192x4320. With the implementation of H.265 standards, CP PLUS plans to introduce a range of video surveillance devices that support H.265 decoding and deliver its benefits over 40% lesser bandwidth use. The potential benefits offered by H.265 standards are as below:

● Accelerate demand and sale of 4K/ Ultra-HD screens which has been largely limited due to large price difference and absence of UHD content. H.265 can offset the second challenge. ● Huge opportunities from reduced bitrate requirements enabling broadcasters and broadcast & online vendors to bundle more channels/content on existing delivery mediums. ● Extend far greater video quality experience compared to H.264 encoded sequence at same bitrate. ● Ability to offer higher quality video for bandwidth constrained mobile networks. ● Realize differentiated and premium 4K content, multi-view encoding etc.

him to talk to visitors even when away. The user only has to switch on the ‘follow me’ mode which will prompt the VDP to dial in a pre-fed telephone number whenever it is buzzed. Conventional VDPs generally just click a photograph and store them for reference purpose.

SEETHRU comes with an option to view the feed on a television, eliminating the need to walk to the unit. Upto

3 indoor monitors are supported by the device which extends the monitoring capabilities into the bedroom, kitchen, study etc. There is an additional intercom/ call forwarding facility amongst these units. The VDP can also be used in multi-entrance accommodations such as villas and monitor critical areas of the residence by supporting a maximum of 4 CCTVcameras. Additional security features include capturing an image of the visitor whenever the VDP is activated. These images are now retrievable by the use of a removable SD card. The CCTVs installed can also have an integrated software based motion detection system which would record a small clip whenever there is motion in front of the camera. With a stylish touch panel, the SEETHRU 7 serves a dual function of ad-

dressing the security needs of the user as well as adds an aesthetic appeal to the house owing to its contemporary design. The product is available at all leading electronic retail stores and e-commerce websites for a price of Rs. 18,999.

Preferential Market Access on Biometrics T

he Security Promotion Group of India (SPGI) has achieved another milestone in its short lifespan and has been instrumental in initiating the implementation of Preferential Market Access on Biometrics. To celebrate the success and discuss other initiatives, SPGI hosted a breakfast in Park Balluchi, Pragati Maidan, on 12 December 2014. Sanjeev Sehgal, Chairman, SPGI addressed the gathering and updated them on the news that Preferential Market Access has already been implemented on biometrics including biometric access control/ authentication devices, biometric fingerprint sensor and biometric iris sensor.

Sehgal further informed the gathering that: ● The policy would be applicable to all ministries/ departments (except Ministry of Defence) and their agencies for governmental purposes, and not with a view for commercial resale or with a view to use in the production of goods for commercial sale. ● The percentage of procurement, in terms of value, would be 50%. ● The percentage of domestic value addition, in terms of bill of materials (BOM), would be 30% in year 1 and go up by 5% each year thereafter, culminating at 50%. ● A government ministry/ department January 2015

cable for procurement under all centrally sponsored schemes and grants made by the Central Government as per the policy. Sehgal also informed the gathered guests that the next initiative in the offing was the setting-up of a CISF Technical Gadgets Assessment Centre at ITPO: ● The centre would work as a platform for exhibiting, demonstrating, trial and testing different security equipment throughout the year in an actual operational condition on NCNC (No Cost, No Commitment) basis. ● The centre to be set up with the sup-

port and association of ITPO, CISF & SPGI with proposed support of the Ministry of Home Affairs. On Standardization of security products which has been an industry demand for years, he said: ● Govt. has decided to have mandatory Indian standards for all electronic products under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). ● 15 products have come under mandatory BIS Certification like laptops, printers, scanners etc. ● A technical committee for ‘Alarms & Electronic Security Systems (LITD 26)’ has already been formed by BIS. Other important points deliberated

upon were: ● Get industry to avail all the benefits under MSME. ● Reduction and rationalization of taxes and duties. ● Promotion of ‘Electronic Manufacturing Clusters’ with ELCINA. ● Availability of skilled technical manpower in coordination with Electronic Sector Skill Council of India (ESSCI). ● National Occupational Standards have been made for ‘CCTV Installer’ and institutes are been given grant under NSDC for providing training. A special address by Vikram Sahgal, GM (Security), ITPO brought to the forefront ITPO’s commitment to promote the security industry and help benefit not only the security fraternity but the common man. By all accounts, this informative session was very well received and much appreciated by all present.

Anil Mehra Director – ADI India IndiaSAFE: Kindly explain in brief the current operations of ADI India. Anil Mehra (AM): Currently in In-

we have local sales teams. Thus we are overall present in close to 30 cities across India.

dia we are looking at multiple categories comprising more than 65 brands – we are selling CCTV, IP which is growing very fast for us, home solutions, access control, intrusion alarm and PA systems. We are also selling fire alarms which is another large category for us, and AIDC which includes POS machines, and scanning and mobility products. Besides, we have a few new additions also – we have started commercial AV with Eletro-Voice, and a brand from US called Russound which is for high end residential application. We are also expanding our product basket in certain accessories which complements our portfolio and have tied up with Allied Telesis for their routers and switches and other networking products with an aim to give a complete solution for IP. Besides, currently we have direct operations in 12 cities through our branches and very soon we will inaugurate our 13th branch in Indore. We are present in another 16 cities through third party based logistic companies, where

IndiaSAFE: Which brands and products are you currently promoting in India? AM: Currently we are selling more than 65 brands in India and all brands are equally important for us. Our view of the market is that each brand caters to a certain market segment and as a distribution company we need to try to maximize the potential of each brand, and that’s the role we play.

IndiaSAFE: How do you decide on a product? AM: We actually don’t look at it from the product’s perspective; we look for the portfolio that we sell and we are always open for products that may complement our portfolio. ADI’s proposition is to give our customers a one-stop-shop for security. In case a certain segment of customer needs a certain product that is not available in our portfolio, we need to bridge the gap and try to make it available to them. We understand the magnitude of January 2015

37

demand, the popularity of the brand which is having this product and then take discussions forward to understand if we are doing justice to the product in a certain portfolio or not. With these views in mind we decide on a product and complete the portfolio. Currently, the fact is that the security market is evolving in India and new technologies are coming up uninterruptedly. So there is always an opportunity to include innovations in our range that are capable to cater to certain unfulfilled demands of a certain market segment. It will also enable our channel partners to capture the end users’ market better and efficiently.

IndiaSAFE: Are you open for as many brands for the same kind of product? If yes, how do you ward off the competition amongst them? AM: Yes, we are open to as many brands as we could do justice with. ADI practices a business model of multibrand multi-channel. We are distributing close to 400 brands in North America and Europe, and in India we are distributing about 65 brands. So we always

interview

look to add a brand if they have sufficient market opportunity and are complimenting to the ADI portfolio. We also don’t see any competition amongst brands. We always look at a portfolio and try to see that we don’t offer brands that can cannibalize each other. As I earlier said there are different segments of markets, and brands also follow a market segmentation strategy. Each brand segments itself on the basis of price, features, verticals and/ or kind of end users. It is the brand owners who have to decide their respective marketing strategies. We are the intermediaries who help them get their respective markets in an easy way. So we don’t see any competition between different brands – we just identify the demands of different SIs for specific brands and give them the opportunity to work with us. We work on the principle that if a system integrator demands a specific product our team will never suggest but deliver the same. Suggestions are extended only when they are explicitly sought.

IndiaSAFE: What is your go-tomarket strategy? How have ADI Expos held over the years been helpful in enhancing your reach and market share? AM: We have a pretty straight forward go-to-market strategy; we follow the global model which is 100% B2B. We work through our system integration companies. We follow the agenda for ourselves that association with ADI will help one grow and expand one’s business, and that’s the valid proposition that we give to all our installers. ADI is a one-stop-shop for security solutions and offers multi-category proposition for our installers and end customers. We have support services

to complement our sales team. There is a dedicated toll free customer care number which helps in resolving technical queries of installers. Also we have one of the largest technical teams in the industry which focuses on imparting regular trainings to our installers at our branch locations. If an installer today associates with us for one product we will not only service him for the current project but will get him trained on other product categories also, which he may later be able to install on the same site, or the next, and this is a continuous process. So the same installer can create a huge business for all – the manufacturer, we as distributor, and himself. We organize ADI Training Series and One day Sale every year in 12 locations. These events provide installers an opportunity to directly interact with the best security brands. Also there are full day training sessions organized along with live product display. We have successfully conducted these events for the past 6 years and have seen a tremendous growth in the number of installers as well as their technical competence.

IndiaSAFE: Being a multiproducts platform, does ADI also function as a system integrator to facilitate complete solutions to some customers? AM: We do not do any kind of system integration work because our business model is absolutely clear that we sell only through installers or system integration companies. However, we help and enable them by ways of BOQ design, solution designing support, or any other relevant strategy to grow their business, and through them our business also grows. January 2015

38

IndiaSAFE: How, in your view, has the security industry evolved so far – especially in India – technologically and commercially? AM: See, technologically India is very young and evolving, and a huge population in India is technology savvy. In the IT industry most of the technological developments are done in India or by an Indian. So, it did start with a low-end product but over the period there is a demand for integrated solutions. People who were exposed to technology 4-5 years back certainly realized that they bought those solutions as they were the need of that hour and they were the first time buyers. But over the period, they understood that benefits and technologies are also upgraded, so now there is a growing demand for integrated solutions and multiples of them are available with ADI as well. Besides, there is also a mass market which is very price conscious but I guess they are the first time buyers and they will also evolve with the passage of time and experience. Commercially also, India has come a long way and is no longer a market only for low cost products. The best brands are doing good business in India, side by side with the low cost products. So opportunities are available for everyone in the security business.

IndiaSAFE: How, in your opinion, has the market transformed in terms of quality v/s price? AM: There are certain product lines like in technology where price erosion always happens. Either the new technology is cheaper, or expensive but the price of the old technology may drop – so, over a period of time it is always the

evolution of the market. You always begin at the base and then climb up. People are realizing and getting more and more quality conscious over price, and aim at getting their purpose fulfilled. And fortunately at ADI, we have the ability to service the entire spectrum, which we call as the good, better and the best strategy.

IndiaSAFE: What is your priority sector – government or private, and why? What are the percentage shares? AM: We don’t look at the market like that as I said we don’t go directly to the end users. We look at our installation companies for what kind of job they are asking. We are concerned if we at ADI have the demanded customer solution, hence we look at it from solution point of view rather than sector. Having said that, whenever we have large size projects we work very closely with our OEM partners. We have arrangements with them in terms of locking the cases, and extending support to the SIs directly so they don’t face any challenge in terms of making the end user understand the design, solution and even pricing.

city with smart security and that’s where our global partnerships will really help us avail the opportunity.

IndiaSAFE: How do you promise after sale support pan-India? How do the brands participate? AM: Honestly speaking, we can do a lot better than what we are doing today. Once again I will say that the security industry is yet in evolution phase and has not reached at par with IT. Unlike the IT industry, probably owing to the size of the market or geography constrains, unfortunately the infrastructure of providing service backup to the system integrator or end user has not been set up by all. Some brands are working on it and some have done just a bit of work. On our own we are always limited in our capabilities because we may have certain spares but we may not have others, and some are proprietary. Having said that, over a period of time we are able to service 80-85% of the products that we sell, either in-house or with the help of the vendors or third party service providers. But for last 15-20%, we bank more on manufacturers to enable ADI to provide that last length of service to the installation communities and make more investment on creating service centers or service backup in India.

IndiaSAFE: How do you visualize the 100 smart cities program by PM Narendra Modi will impact the security industry in India in the forthcoming days; and where does ADI find itself benefitting with the program? AM: We have been hearing about it

IndiaSAFE: What is your strategy on training and what role do the partnered brands play to put it in place? AM: One thing I am really glad about

and we do hope that this project kicks on. From ADI perspective we are looking at it as a great opportunity because any smart city needs to have smart security set up. So we are associating smart

is that ADI is the largest training organization in security in India. Last year we trained more than 2,500 installers through multiple training sessions in our branches. We invest a lot to create an exJanuary 2015

39

perience zone in every branch and invite SIs to have a live experience of the products. Installers are free to bring in their customers to have a first hand experience of the suggested solution. All ADI locations have training facilities which are used both by the manufacturers and the ADI technical team to conduct training programs. We have a current initiative that Thursdays are IP days; every Thursday there is training on IP technology at every branch of ADI. We are getting huge support from manufacturers and partners to execute the same.

IndiaSAFE: What are your future business plans and how are you going to expand? AM: Future business for ADI depends on the products we sell and the brands we associate with, new products and technologies that keep coming up, and thirdly the reach to new geographies. In our overall growth strategy we are going to combine how we can expand to more cities, reach out to more customers and engage them with ADI, and leverage the existing portfolio to sell maximum – by training, mentoring and giving support through vendors or ADI. So overall, we look up to the more evolved model of ADI in US and in Europe as guidance for us.

IndiaSAFE: Do you have a message for readers of IndiaSAFE? AM: Be safe and secure and make India a safe country to live for everyone. As Indian we know that we don’t give safety and security prime importance – we always give that the last thought. It shows our attitude which is getting reflected in so many ways. So if we all are safety and security conscious it will be a great move for India and all of us.

Interview

Ashok Bajpai Managing Director,

G4S Corporate Service (India) Pvt. Ltd. A quarter of a century ago Group 4 Securicor first set foot in India and changed the manned guarding panorama on every perceptible level. It heralded an unprecedented transformation in the manned guarding segment, and is largely instrumental in the making of an industry with a force that is 7 million strong. Today, G4S India boasts a company strength that tops 130,000 and has a new man at the helm as Managing Director – Ashok Bajpai. IndiaSAFE brings you first hand views from a man who has a task clearly set.

IndiaSAFE: Mr. Bajpai, your profile is wide-ranging. You are an MBA in Finance but have majorly been involved in Business Development/ Sales & Marketing, that too in varied fields. What do you find common in all and how did you manage them? Ashok Bajpai (AB): Well, I think with diversity of experience comes the ability to distil some very similar principles of management, and some of the principles are common to all industries. One of them is really the question of developing clarity of vision i.e., you need to know where you want to go in order to control there. Therefore, whether it is managing Yum restaurant or being at government service it’s really to have clarity before you start the journey. So, as I started my journey in G4S a few months ago, my idea was to develop the vision for G4S India along with my leadership team, and that’s really the first principle. So it does not

really matter which field you are in but after a level when you start it is really a question of making sure that you are able to take people with you, and that’s the one thing that is common to all.

IndiaSAFE: Is the security industry not somehow different? Kindly share your views. AB: The security industry like every industry has its uniqueness. It is a B2B industry and it has a bit of a consumer element because every two businesses have people who interact in order to forge contracts. We are transitioning from being a purely B2B player to also understanding the needs of our customers. So it’s not a question of just satisfying the needs of the security officer who might be doing a tender with us but also why he is doing it and how it affects the employees of that company whom he is trying to protect. So the difference now is that we are not just a supplier or vendor, but are satJanuary 2015

41

isfying the needs of the employees of our customers. And that’s what makes me more to a B2C as well because I want to understand the consumer who is behind a B2B contract. Besides, employing more than 130,000 employees makes us very unique not just in the security industry but also in any industry in India. The categorization of these people as unskilled in several states is certainly an issue, and if there is a re-categorization of those people as skilled or semiskilled, it makes a difference in terms of their ability to be more progressive and do value added jobs. Above all, with the development of the economy, the security environment tends not to have developed better so far not only in India but almost all over the world except some of the Scandinavian countries, Switzerland and a few more. With development comes a need for greater security and for us it is a question of partnership – as India has started to develop at the rate it is

security provider. We literally secure the world with presence in 120 countries and that’s a point of pride for us. We are enabled to be the industry leader and the knowledge holder of how security is. We are a 7 billion GBP company on the London Stock Exchange and in India we are clearly one of the biggest players where we have a double digit growth. As industry estimates indicate a 14 to 20% growth per year, G4S is poised for that growth, and being at number one position, in coming days we will continue to only widen the gap with the new changes we are bringing about.. We also have two additional lines of business – facilities management and electronic security business which are again growing in strong double digits. Therefore, we see a healthy growth across G4S business.

around 15,000 registered companies which contribute to only 40% of the entire market and rest 60% market is just unregulated. We would like to appeal to the government to enable the regulation of this market in accordance with the PSARA guidelines. There is an importance of bringing standards into this country. So while we are doing a bit of industry advocacy for better enforcement of existing laws, internally we are ensuring that we raise the standards and for this we drive our training to a differentiated level of expertise. Why G4S is maintaining the premium position is because our guards are better trained, because you have a sense of reliability on the way we do the background checks, because we have a supervisory structure to check the employees on duty, because you know that there is a multinational company that is backing this Indian company and therefore there are certain standards, ethics and qualities that we maintain, and finally because we have the expertise to make that happen on the ground. Number two – we aim at much greater growth for our facility management and electronic business as well because that has probably been neglected over some time. So we aim to just continue to build on the success that we have maintained.

IndiaSAFE: What does G4S Systems Division aim at in the coming 2 years? AB: We definitely aim to change the

IndiaSAFE: What is the goto-market-strategy of G4S as a system integrator? AB: We have a lot of work to do on

game and bring about a paradigm shift in terms of how security is treated in India. There are a few objectives; number one is an industry objective – we have a very fragmented market with

that. We are a small player in the system integration business as of now. I would say that this is work-in-progress for us. The fact is that we have extremely

now and there is so much hope from the government, it is our responsibility to be a part of the process and secure the country to move forward. A secure environment for industry is always a destination for better investment.

IndiaSAFE: How in your view, is G4S Systems Company placed in today’s perspective in terms of competence and revenue respectively – globally and in India? AB: Well, G4S is the world’s largest

good technology, which is our strength, but it is deployed across the world almost in a fragmented manner. The idea is to pick the best of the best, bring that as a bouquet of products, and then to differentiate as per the relevance to a sector. So the idea is to use our existing IP technology in India in relevance with the sectors where it is to be used, and therefore not to create anything new but to build on the existing ones. For example the access control of the Pentagon is done by G4S. So clearly there is some expertise that has been ratified by the US Department of Defense. We may not bring and use all the modules in India but with relevance parts of them can be used here as well.

IndiaSAFE: Earlier G4S Systems Division was playing around three technologies – CCTV, access control and fire alarms. What is the current scope? AB: G4S is a world-class provider of specialized security and safety systems. We are currently working towards making our solutions more convergent with an enhancing IP network. We offer a comprehensive security solution. The company is not limited to CCTV surveillance, access control and fire alarms. We provide a wide range of complimenting services such as MSS, Corporate & Industrial Investigations, Beat Patrol, Central Monitoring Response, Emergency Response and Certified Protection Officer (CPO).

IndiaSAFE: What is your complete range of products? AB: We offer an integrated solution through our MSS, ESS and FS offerings along with central monitoring station for remote monitoring from

homes/ offices and provide quick response through our manned guarding services. G4S Electronic Security Systems is a world-class provider of specialized security & safety systems like access control system, CCTV surveillance, fire detection & alarm system, gas based fire suppression system, building management system, intruder alarm system and personnel screening system. Our cutting edge technology within every installation ensures ‘unified security intelligence’ where there is seamless multi-way communication between the various technologies all on one single platform. This delivers unprecedented levels of system intelligence that can create alerts only at times of potential risk.

IndiaSAFE: Where do you source your products from and which specific brands do you endorse? AB: We have an understanding with global OEMs and are certified VARs for most of the leading international brands across electronic safety and security. We have tie-ups with different brands like G4S tech and so on. We, at G4S invest in certified training programs for our project engineers and our technical support, with all the brands that are associated with us to provide seamless and continuous service support to our customers.

IndiaSAFE: Do you have a plan to set up your own manufacturing units, especially in India? AB: We deploy the best equipment in the industry and source it from our reliable partners. Currently we do not in-

tend to set up any manufacturing facility but are open to do so in the future.

IndiaSAFE: You have to work with multiple brands. How do you execute training and how much do the brands support in that? AB: Training is an ongoing process as it helps in improving business performance, and it also elevates the teams’ morale. We invest in people and believe in providing them with continuous training to deliver better results. We invest in certified training programmes for project engineers and technical support engineers, with all the brands associated with us to provide seamless service support to our customers. G4S associates itself with SSSDC to further skill our workforce. Many of our guards are now getting third party certifications from SSSDC. G4S has an experienced and professional team that provides a wide range of training and developmental services. We have a team of learned and valued academicians with desired experience as security professionals that gives us the cutting edge as perceived by the clients. We use a range of training techniques including formal inputs, indoor and outdoor experiential activities, psychometric tools, mentoring and coaching to suit the individual learning preferences for desired outcomes. We also offer a comprehensive range of courses that cover management development, business and interpersonal and security skills.

IndiaSAFE: How do you extend after sales support pan India? How are the manufacturers involved in this? January 2015

43

AB: At G4S have a three tier structure for extending service support to our customers across India. The first tier support is available through our certified engineers based out of 9 locations including major tier 1 and tier 2 cities. Our second tier support is available through our centralized support centre based at our headquarters in Gurgaon, which is backed with spare availability at our central warehouse. And our third tier support structure is extended through our OEM partners who complement us on both technical support and spare part management at their location.

IndiaSAFE: G4S has majorly been focusing on the high-end market. Do you have any plan to diversify to mid- and lowend markets as well? AB: Well, because of its standard of excellence, G4S has been the first choice for the large corporates, diplomatic missions, international organizations and so on in India. So, that has clearly been a play for us and that will continue. As India grows, manufacturing will grow along with the growth of other requirements, and that continues to be our focus. I don’t see any major shift that is going to occur towards focus of market class.

IndiaSAFE: Which all verticals you have been working with? Kindly share your comparative experience in terms of installation, execution and maintenance of the project. AB: G4S Security Systems is a worldclass provider of specialized security and safety systems across sectors. We work with different verticals such as IT and ITES, BFSI, industrial, diplomatic

missions, retail, hospitality & healthcare, oil & gas, government, pharma, logistics etc.

IndiaSAFE: Which is your priority sector, and what is the share of your realization in government sector organizations? AB: I think we are really not a player in the government sector; our priority has always been in corporate India and the multinational corporations here. With some we have global and regional contracts that we are also running. where we have been cleared by them across countries and we continue to fulfill those responsibilities in India as well. We have a little interaction in government sector; however, we find that the government has a positive point of view and which may move towards security and safety. We will always explore opportunities and find a way to secure India. I think that is very important for us to being a part of securing India. If the government does have specific initiatives where we can value add, we must explore the opportunity.

IndiaSAFE: How do you envisage the 100 smart cities projects recently declared by the government in terms of implementation and how are you planning to be involved in the same? AB: I think it is the brilliant initiative that the government has initiated. It has a direct impact on creating development in a country and bringing investments. Smart city means a technologically more advanced city than a traditional one – more towards IT and

integration – and there will be a need for the security sector to be involved in bringing systems together. So there is a great opportunity for systems integration, cyber security and of course the CCTV and other security equipment. We are actively watching and looking forward to be the part of it.

IndiaSAFE: L1 is the usual criteria in the government sector. However, G4s is renowned for quality products and services that are more expensive. How do you compete there? AB: G4S will never compromise on quality and compliance, and if we don’t qualify we understand that there may be a different requirement and we will be happy to let it go.

IndiaSAFE: And how do you find the trend in the current market in terms of quality v/s price? AB: Every market becomes increasingly commoditized as it progresses and the difference between various players tends to converge. So, over time one will see commoditization and one will see consolidation of this market. But one will also see a massive demand for quality of security. The recent unfortunate incidence in Pakistan is a clear awakening for the need of quality security in India. So, though the market may be commoditized, the requirement of quality is also becoming increasingly important for the security environment today.

IndiaSAFE: What is your view on the government policy and regulations towards the security industry and what January 2015

44

recommendations would you like to make? AB: First of all, we are very happy that PSARA was enacted and we appeal for strong enforcement of PSARA so standards of excellence and quality may come into this sector and players like us could benefit. Second what I find that only 49% FDI is not sufficient to attract world class technologies, and it is not a question of just the investment but the motivation to bring investment into this country. So, as in the telecommunication industry, investment policies for security industry also need to be revised. If we can allow majority shareholder in Defense, why not in security which is actually not as sensitive as defense? If it happens, G4S with world class technology will love to come to India, but at 49% stake, there is always a doubt. Besides, tax policy including custom duties are a bit of a hindrance – like GPS systems, the government needs to revise the tax structure for security systems as well. We need to replace guards with cameras. We have to have back-up systems when a guard fails and so on. So a favourable tax system is highly recommended.

IndiaSAFE: How do you place IndiaSAFE, and what message would you like to deliver for our readers? AB: I think IndiaSAFE is the leading publication, I am deeply impressed by the quality of articles you publish. I wait for the next edition every single time. I just wish IndiaSAFE the best and you are really playing a great role in redefining the awareness and the need for security not for just across the industry but to readers at large.

Understanding Hidden VMS Solution Support Costs and Deployment Issues By Justin Schorn – VP, Product Management and Co-Founder, Aimetis

The leading open platform Video Management Software (VMS) solutions may appear to operate in much the same way as each other; however, their deployment requirements and on-going support can be surprisingly different. In this article, Justin Schorn of Aimetis, highlights some key areas integrators should consider when choosing a VMS solution. System limitations are generally only apparent after installation and can be costly for integrators to rectify

An independent VMS gives the greatest flexibility

C

hoosing a VMS solution that supports the widest possible range of current video cameras, manufacturers and technologies, like Aimetis Symphony™, is a prudent decision. Larger CCTV applications, where VMS solutions are most prevalent, are regularly updated and expanded. They use video hardware from a range of manufactur-

ers and require client viewing from different types of PC, tablet and smartphone. A VMS that supports a wide range of products will reduce camera obsolescence and site costs by enabling the re-use of existing site cameras, such as PTZ domes. It is very easy to confuse a manufacturer’s own control software solution with an open platform VMS, but the difference is stark. A manufacturer’s control software is designed to control its own hardware solutions as a priority. It often has limited capability to handle a wide variety of video hardware, locking the integrator into a specific manufacturer and a limited range of client PCs, tablets and January 2015

46

smartphones. Aimetis’ development process ensures that cameras from leading manufacturers, both now and in the future, are fully integrated. Similarly, PCs, tablets and smartphones and their operating systems are also supported.

System specification

D

efining the server and network bandwidth required for a VMS system has a massive impact on its design, deployment and operation. An IT infrastructure is used and the IT specialists at the end user’s site will be involved throughout the project. If an inadequate infrastructure is provided the system’s performance will be compromised. Aimetis has developed an on-line, system design tool, which calculates the number of servers, total storage, storage bandwidth and camera bandwidth required, to make the design of a system and its future expansion predictable.

License structure for simple expansion

V

MS providers usually charge a license fee for their software. This is applied to all the cameras, servers, storage and other network devices used in a system. Some VMS solutions will also impose artificial camera channel limits per server and lock the software to a specific, MAC address. If a device fails, reallocation of the MAC address can delay and complicate support. Aimetis VMS licenses are applied to camera channels, not cameras. All other aspects of the system, such as servers, clients and alarm interfaces, carry no license fee and may be easily expanded. Aimetis offers just three license levels; Standard for single-server applications, Professional for multiple servers and Enterprise for analytics. Licenses can be moved between cameras and simply upgraded if additional functionality is required.

Video analytics and metadata

V

ideo analytics are increasingly being used to make surveillance systems intelligent, providing real time alerts and alarms to security threats. Systems that offer built-in analytics, instead of third party analytics, avoid integration issues and maximise processing efficiency.

Aimetis Symphony™ software combines VMS and analytics in one package, allowing the use of video metadata to identify changes and activity within a video stream. Metadata is far more efficient for a server to process than the full video stream and makes searches extremely quick. Analytics functions can also be applied to recorded video for ‘forensic’ searches, retrospectively. For example, Aimetis can return all alarms and alerts from 31 days of HD recording in less than a minute, if a new analytics rule is applied to an existing channel. This speed of searching, accuracy and processing efficiency is simply not possible if the VMS uses third-party analytics.

Camera to server density

U

sing metadata increases video processing efficiency, so fewer servers are needed for the same job. Fewer servers means faster and simpler installation, reduced running costs, simpler system configuration and less support. Aimetis can support 100 cameras at 1080p, recording at 25fps, using a single Intel Xeon processor-based server, as well as supporting multiple clients for day-to-day system use. That is a staggering 2,500fps record rate. An NVR solution with the same camera count would typically use 7 NVRs, still require a server to control them and be significantly less reliable. January 2015

47

System failover

A

ny security system can fail and a VMS must offer a satisfactory solution and response to this possibility. RAID storage can mitigate HDD failure in NVR solutions, but not an NVR failure itself. A server-based, VMS solution would typically be more reliable than an NVR, but can still fail. Aimetis is able to support any level of system failover design in the form of redundant servers, storage arrays, RAID and camera migration. The specified system failover should be proportional to the critical level of the security application. In summary, not all VMS solutions are created equal. It is worth integrators and end users spending time ensuring that the system they select meets their requirements in terms of function and deployment.

SeeTec Cayuga R5: More Comfortable Installation, Management and Integration A

fter many customers and partners already took the chance to take a first look at some new features at Security Essen 2014, the fifth release of the video management software SeeTec Cayuga is now going to be available in the beginning of December. The following aspects have been the focal points during the development of the new version R5: Installation, management and operations should be optimized and simplified. In addition it should be easier to integrate the software into customers’ processes and

systems. First of all, users will recognize a remarkable performance improvement of the client software, which was made possible through numerous optimiza-

tions in various parts of the software. So the processing times for starting the client, visualizing views or switching to archive mode could be reduced by up to two thirds. This allows the security staff to operate the system more smoothly. In addition, a new tool speeds up the installation and configuration of SeeTec Cayuga R5 systems: The newly developed Device Finder searches and detects all IP cameras and video encoders available on the network – automatically and across all vendors. Cameras can be

added to the SeeTec system with just one click – afterwards they will immediately be available in live and archive mode with a standard configuration. Furthermore in SeeTec Cayuga R5 the Update Server has been overhauled, making the management of existing systems much easier. If a SeeTec Cayuga server is connected to the internet, the Update Server can automatically download, deliver and install patches and updates for the SeeTec software. Thus the system is always up to date and errors caused by the manual installation of updates are avoided. Especially in large installations containing several servers and clients the use of the Update Server means a significant saving of time for the administrator. For customers who need a system language, which is not yet available in SeeTec Cayuga, R5 provides new options to facilitate the system use: A new localization interface makes it possible to export existing system language sets and to import own localization files. Another highlight of SeeTec Cayuga

R5 are the software’s extended integration capabilities. Due to the support of more than 1,000 different camera models SeeTec Cayuga already allows a customized planning of video systems. SeeTec Cayuga R5 now for the first time contains generic camera drivers, which make a wider spectrum of products from certain manufacturers available in the SeeTec system – even without the need to install a new software release. In a first step all camera models from Axis, Hikvision, Samsung and Sony with a particular firmware version can be used. But SeeTec Cayuga has not only become more flexible on camera side: Especially in large installations monitor walls are inevitable to allow security staff always to keep an eye on what happens on site. Therefore SeeTec has been fostering a close partnership with eyevis, one of the leading manufacturers of large screen visualizing solutions. For the interaction of SeeTec Cayuga and eyevis video walls a new interface has been developed – the deployment of a combined solution now

provides additional advantages. For instance cameras and views in SeeTec Cayuga can be visualized on an eyevis wall manually, using pre-configured buttons or automatically, triggered by alarms or events. All camera devices supported in SeeTec Cayuga can also be used and displayed on eyevis systems. Even the simultaneous control of several large screen systems is now possible from within the SeeTec Cayuga software. Especially for banks and customers in the public sector SeeTec Cayuga R5 offers an additional benefit: To comply with IT security requirements in these markets, the security standards, which have already been very high in all SeeTec software versions, were further optimized. Thus the reliable encoding of the communication between client and server has been improved. Furthermore the data transmission between Mobile/ Web Client and the SeeTec server as well as data exports are now also secured using SSL certificates and 3DES.

Vario Empowers 360° Mobile Video Analytics V

ARIO LED illuminators from Raytec have been selected as part of a mobile and solar powered video surveillance system, deployed across multiple locations in Germany. Local security integrator G&G Sicherheitstechnik GmbH had received significant demand for a mobile surveillance solution to provide the detection and identification of subjects at night, from locations which did not have mains power. These included large construction

sites, highway and bridge construction, event security, outdoor and open space monitoring. Specialists in bespoke video and alarm system design, G&G Sicherheitstechnik GmbH set about creating a solution. Good quality lighting was seen as a crucial component, not only so that the cameras could see at night, but also so that the video analytics for the alarm triggers could work to the best of its ability. Furthermore, with the need for a mobile structure, the lights needed to be compact, lightJanuary 2015

weight but yet extremely powerful to cover the whole site. “Following extensive testing we chose VARIO illuminators from Raytec as the best performing lighting to work seamlessly with the other system components,” explains Bernd Gerhards, Managing Director of G&G Sicherheitstechnik GmbH, “Coupled with the fact that they had the lowest energy consumption and gave 100% reliability even under the worst weather conditions.” Each system includes 3 panels of VARIO i4 120° low voltage infra-red il-

luminators integrated onto a mobile pole structure along with 3 dome cameras, a PTZ camera, and a photovoltaic panel to power the whole system – completely independent from power grid. “The wide angle IR illuminators that we selected easily covered 360° at a distance of 120m, meaning that we could comfortably illuminate the whole site from one mobile structure!” comments Bernd. The powerful IR lighting allows the cameras to generate excellent night time images, “…but the system really

becomes intelligent when the lighting is used in conjunction with the video analytics!” said Bernd. The high quality and highly even spread of lighting allows the analytics software to accurately identify subjects on scene and trigger alarms which alert the control center that the system is linked to 24/7, or the local police. Quality illumination also significantly reduces the number of false alarms. Systems with insufficient light produce noisy images that impact the ability of video analytics to detect and differentiate between objects.

the loss of quality that is experienced by users of traditional video quads which must reduce the resolution of each input to show more than one camera per screen. This is achieved by processing the standard definition feeds together into a single high-resolution DVI (or HDMI) output and mapping pixels on a one-for-one basis to an HD screen with real-time updates for each channel. In the default mode, FourSight-DVI shows all four video inputs as a quad allowing all the cameras to be simultaneously monitored. If required, users can switch to a full screen view for each camera. A further four modes can be quickly selected to display different combinations of the camera feeds on the output screen. Ovation Systems’ new monitoring solution autosenses PAL or NTSC video inputs for easy configuration and deployment. It also automatically configures itself for operation with most

Artesyn Embedded Technologies Announces

ATCA Breakthrough: Successfully Tests First 100G Technology ®

Innovative QuadStar™ backplane architecture enables 1.6 Tb/s aggregate bandwidth now, with a future-proof path to 4 Tb/s

A

rtesyn Embedded Technologies announced the successful testing of the industry’s first 100G ATCA technology. This breakthrough will for the first time enable bandwidth-hungry next-generation applications in software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) deployments to achieve up to 4 Tb/s aggregate throughput in a single open standards-based bladed server system.Working with connector manufacturer, ERNI, Artesyn has devel-

oped the critical technology components – the connector and backplane – that enable 100 Gb/s Ethernet connectivity in an ATCA shelf. The technology will be available in Artesyn’s Centellis™ 8000 series systems later in the year and the first applications set to take advantage of this breakthrough are SDN/ NFV network security and optimization, where deep packet inspection techniques are used to process massive data flows in real time. Artesyn is implementing an innovative QuadStar™ backplane architecture to provide four independent networks to every blade. With today’s 40G payload and switches, this allows customers the flexibility to implement 160G per blade bandwidth with no redundancy or a 120G per blade backplane if one network is used to provide redundancy. That equals an aggregated system bandwidth January 2015

of 1.6Tb/s when implemented with no redundancy. This same QuadStar™ technology can be applied to 100G payload and switches. This gives customers the ability to deliver up to 400G to each blade (4.0Tb/s aggregate system bandwidth) in a non-redundant implementation or 300G with redundancy. To future proof their investment, customers can implement with 40G technology today and achieve up to 1.6Tb/s of aggregate system bandwidth – then upgrade to 100G and achieve up to 4.0Tb/s of aggregate bandwidth in the future using the same chassis and backplane. Doug Sandy, embedded Computing Chief Technology Officer, Artesyn Embedded Technologies said, “Working with the industry, Artesyn is facilitating the development of open standards around 100G ATCA, which enable customers to evolve their SDN/NFV platforms to the highest possible performance. Through the companies in our heritage, including Pro-Log,

More torque and less action for Redvision’s X-SERIES™ cameras A

n increased torque setting in Redvision’s X-SERIES™ rugged PTZ and dome camera range serves to lock the camera in place when motionless. The setting is designed for applications where there is more load on the camera head, such as when the Visor sun-shield is fitted; for locations where birds may land on it, such as seagulls in coastal and maritime applications; and where the camera is exposed to high winds. “The torque level of the motors in the pan and tilt mechanism of the XSERIES™ camera is now adjustable,” explained Paul Hucker, Managing Director of UK-based CCTV manufacturer, Red-

vision, “High torque in a moving PTZ camera is what makes the camera quick and responsive. When stationary, high torque has the effect of locking the camera in position and resisting unwanted movement. The compromise is that energy consumption increases with torque. “The factory settings of the X-SERIES™ are designed to balance speed and efficiency, for the majority of applications. We have torque set at 50% for when the camera is stationary, which is energy efficient. Maximum torque is en-

gaged during movement, achieving pan speeds of 200°/sec and tilt speeds of 100°/sec. “The new adjustable setting allows customers to increase the stationary torque to 100%, where appropriate. This holds the cameras in position, resisting unwanted movement resulting from birds, exposure to wind and where the Visor is fitted.” The torque setting adjustment applies to the 18, 28 and 40x X-SERIES™; with and without IR and white light LEDs; and with and without wipers.

being used to gather information to enable smarter decisions to be made. This includes real-time information about environmental conditions and resource usage within a building or information about transportation and pedestrian movement in the surrounding area. Regardless of what the information is, many of these devices and sensors are located in environments that are not the typical office environment, and due to the volume of data being generated, wireless connectivity is simply not an option. The Allied Telesis IE200 Series has been developed to support a broad range of critical infrastructure applications and environments where a highly reliable, feature-rich solution is required. The IE200 Series is available in 6- or 12-port models, with or without Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) support, and includes a broad range of features and functionality. Both models are DIN Rail mounted, resulting in reduced space, mounting complexity, and cost when compared to a standard rack. As many new applications today are

IPv6 ready, and with the number of connected devices expected to boom, the IE200 Series will feature native IPv6 support, in a future release of firmware, to ensure support for the largest number of devices across a broad range of applications. Along with support for more traditional features such as port-based VLANs, IEEE 802.1p QoS, 802.1x port security, link aggregation, and port mirroring, the IE200 Series also supports innovative features such as Ethernet Protection Switched Ring (EPSRing™) and Allied Telesis Management Framework™ (AMF). EPSRing provides greater ring resilience in comparison to traditional technologies, ensuring network functionality is restored in the event of failure with negligible impact on users or applications. In addition, AMF assists network managers by providing a technology that reduces their daily workload by automating many common management tasks such as replacing failed units, modifying configurations, upgrading firmware, or extending the network. AMF provides

IT administrators with a unified network management console and zero-touch device installation and recovery, which saves substantial time and money – a major advantage where many devices are deployed. The IE200 Series also uses ‘galvanic isolation,’ which is a unique feature and protects powered equipment against wrongful grounding. According to Seiichiro Sato, Allied Telesis Director of Global Product Marketing, “The IE200 Series extends our existing range of products and provides a single vendor for an organization's enterprise and industrial connectivity solutions. It's the perfect choice for IP video surveillance, intelligent transport, and other embedded applications where the environment can be challenging, or in high-density resilient wiring closet applications where reliability and simplified management are essential. Allied Telesis is committed to reducing the cost and complexity of networking, and the IE200 Series achieves this with an extensive range of features such as EPSRing and AMF.”

Bosch Extends AUTODOME IP 7000 HD Family

Capturing relevant details of moving objects 24/7, never lose track of objects of interest

D

elivering the highest quality of relevant IP video images in all lighting conditions, Bosch Security Systems brings its proven starlight and dynamic technology to the AUTODOME IP 7000 HD family of high-speed pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) domes. Whether capturing video in harsh sunlight or extreme low light, two new models of cameras provide round-the-clock protection regardless of lighting conditions. They ensure maximum image details are captured for traffic and transportation, industrial, government, city surveillance and many other applications faced with difficult lighting and moving objects indoors or out. The new AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD cameras deliver HD video images in extreme low light situations and capture moving objects in 720p HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second. The latest sensor technology combined with the sophisticated noise suppression results in a light sensitivity of 0.052 lux in color mode and even 0.0103 lux in monochrome mode. In comparison, the AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD produces full color images in the dark beyond the point where other cameras have turned to monochrome images. Where others show no image at all, it still delivers detailed monochrome images. Its ability to capture fast moving objects and excellent performance in extreme low light situations make the AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD ideal for securing, for example, parking lots or street corners. The AUTODOME IP dynamic 7000 HD camera features wide dynamic

range and intelligent backlight compensation technology to ensure that moving objects or those of interest are enhanced and can be easily identified in scenes with simultaneously bright and dark areas, which typically challenge standard cameras. To further improve the quality and relevence of IP video images, both cameras also feature intelligent de-fog technology to dynamically adjust camera contrast settings to deliver the best quality in scenes affected by fog, smog, mist or other low contrast scenes.

Intelligent video analysis

A

nother differentiating feature of the AUTODOME IP 7000 HD family is built-in Intelligent Video Analysis (IVA). It helps focus on relevant situations by alerting you when needed, or automatically track objects of interest. IVA also adds sense and structure to video data by adding metadata already in the camera. This allows the quick retrieval of the relevant images from hours of stored video. Metadata can also be used to deliver irrefutable forensic evidence or to optimize business processes based on, for example, people counting or crowd density information. By smartly using the camera’s ability to simultaneously combine 8 of the 15 available IVA rules, complex tasks are made easy and false alarms are reduced to a minimum.

jects of interest. Intelligent Tracking (iTracking) automatically tracks moving objects based on predefined alarm rules or a simple click. By intelligently distinguishing between single and multiple reference points, iTracking will provide uninterrupted tracking. Optimal capture of the object of interest is assured by dynamically adjusting the field of view. In addition, all AUTODOME IP 7000 HD models feature virtual masking technology. Virtual masks hide unwanted motion, such as swaying trees or pulsating lights, to improve the accuracy and performance of the cameras’ intelligent features without hiding areas from the video seen by the operator.

24/7 remote access and camera control

L

imited bandwidth makes it impossible to stream HD video on mobile devices whereas Dynamic Transcoding delivers both smooth live video streaming and instant access to HD (1080p) images when needed, regardless of available bandwidth. Combined with the Video Security app, users are allowed access to camera controls, live video streams and HD images via a mobile device anytime and from anywhere. It also enables you to instantly retrieve the correct video data from hours of recorded material.

intelligent Dynamic Noise Reduction (iDNR). The benefit of this intelligent technology is that it leads to bandwidth only being used when needed. When there is little or no movement in the scene, less bitrate is required. Therefore, iDNR actively analyses the scene distinguishing between relevant information such as moving objects and image noise artifacts. The degree of noise reduction is adjusted accordingly so that important objects are captured and image noise artifacts suppressed, optimizing the camera’s bitrate.

Dependable operation and easy installation

T

he AUTODOME IP 7000 HD family is available in an in-ceiling housing for areas where discrete installation

is important or in a pendant version for indoor and outdoor applications. In-ceiling models feature IP54 and plenum ratings for added dust protection and the ability to mount the camera in areas used for air circulation for heating and air conditioning systems. Pendant models feature a tamper-resistant aluminium housing that is rated to IP66 and NEMA4X for uncompromised functionality even in wet environments – ensuring years of reliable performance. Bosch IP standard-definition and high-definition cameras, encoders and analytics work seamlessly with a wide range of security software and recording solutions from Bosch and many other industry providers. This is backed by ONVIF conformance (Open Network

Video Interface Forum) and the Integration Partner Program (IPP), which gives developers immediate access to software development tools to easily integrate Bosch products with third-party systems. Further details of the Bosch Integration Partner Program are available at ipp.boschsecurity.com The new cameras are available since June 2014.

where and when, indoors and outdoors, without wiring and without reliance on a power supply. A highly specialized international team delivers world-unique, patented solutions. From the Code Generation System (CGS) and keypad key to remote staff management via the AcysMobile App, the modular, and solution-oriented approach sets Acsys apart from the other security competitors. With top-tier clients in the public and private sectors extending across telecommunications, banking, power, mining, logistics, luxury shops, aviation and more, Acsys proves why it’s all about security and productivity. The Acsys solution offers controlled and secured access rights distribution. Acsys locks cannot be picked or bumped, and are very difficult to drill. Keys are programmed only when they need to be used and their access rights are time-based. The main advantage is that keys can only be used during the time the operator has configured them to work. The key memory tells the operator when the key was used (date/ time) and when the lock was opened and closed, giving the operator control over the amount of the time spent by suppliers on job sites (and the cost of the intervention). Keys cannot be copied, so no access is possible outside the access rights working hours. If someone tries to access without having rights, that will be stored in the key and lock. Access can be granted to specific job sites and specific assets on those job sites. If 3 wrong codes are entered on the keypad/ CGS key it will automatically disable itself. Whether integrating to the other on-site security equipment, lifecycle management or job site monitoring systems, asset-specific mechanical integration, high security solutions that require multiple person presence for access, anti-destructive technology to secure your locks and beyond; Acsys takes pride in going the extra mile.

AMG Systems Awarded Major Development Grant

Leading provider of transmission technology is one of the first to be awarded a grant as part of the HPT R&D Investment Programme under a joint LEP initiative by Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership (NEP) and South East Midlands Enterprise Partnership (SEMLEP) to support businesses in the High Performance Technologies (HPT) sector, the aim being to build a core Ethernet technology base within the UK

A

MG has been awarded a six figure grant for enhanced Research and Development, as it continues its growth path into new industry sectors. The grant has been awarded by the LEP programme, which aims to lever £ 12m in private sector investment and create 500 jobs and apprenticeships by March 2018. Founder and MD of AMG Systems Alan Hayes said, “I am incredibly proud that we have been given this grant. AMG’s technology has always been very leading edge and we have unique expertise and knowhow. The grant is incredibly significant for us as a business. AMG has spent the past few years self-funding a sizeable R&D programme. In 2013, this resulted in us bringing to market a series of MultiService Ethernet Switches affectionately

known as the ‘AMG Wonderbox.’ Working with a defined development strategy we have made the company a Centre of Excellence in the UK for all types of transmission technologies, and Ethernet in particular. This is very significant in view of the fact that the UK generally lack technical expertise in the area of designing Ethernet hardware from the ground up, as most of the expertise is in the Far East. AMG sells into strategically import projects which need 15 year+ support. In order to do this, it is imperative to have the expertise in house. It is also important for the country to have this expertise in the UK. We often work with very sensitive security projects – often of Critical National Importance – where the customers understand, and appreciate, that the networks products do not con-

tain untoward software which could be a threat.” The joint LEP initiative to support businesses in the High Performance Technologies (HPT) sector is formed by NEP (Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership) and SEMLEP (South East Midlands Enterprise Partnership). The initiative has been made possible with £ 4m of funding from Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF); the HPT R&D Investment Programme supports businesses based in Northamptonshire and the adjoining South East Midlands area with grants of up to £ 1m to undertake innovative largescale R&D activity. Grants are awarded to businesses on 50/50 basis. AMG is a leading global provider of video and communication transmission solutions designed for CCTV surveillance operations in transport, public, government and military sectors. AMG also manufactures a range of IP cameras under the AMG-Panogenics brand.

Service Providers have the Edge in Residential Security

I

t is no surprise the trend of integrating security equipment and home automation is being spearheaded by MSOs (multiple service operators). Powered partially by intensive marketing and partially by an existing and extensive customer base, MSOs are in the best position to simply upgrade their customers’ current subscriptions. All while traditional monitoring companies and traditional high-end providers are left to find new customers. In its most recent report on residential security, IHS Technology outlined three main system types: traditional high-end, service providers and device vendors.

● Traditional high-end are specialist whole home automation systems

which are supplied by companies, such as AMX, Crestron and Con-

trol4, that provide an integrated suite of smart home products, controllers and professional installation and management services. ● Service providers are packaged solutions at relatively lower cost sold mostly through security service providers, communication service providers and utilities which provide full backend support. Most are professionally installed, by companies like Comcast, AT&T and ADT. ● Device vendors are individual modular smart home devices sold directly or through online/ box retailers which includes MyQ, Piper and Lowes Iris. According to IHS Technology, traditional high-end solutions represented about 32% of the USA market for smart security in home automation applications in 2014. By 2018, the market share of traditional high-end is forecast to decline to about 22%. Contrary for service

providers, which were estimated to represent about 38% of the market in 2014, are forecast to represent about 58% of the market by 2018. Device vendors are projected to expand penetration through 2016 before losing share. IHS anticipates a slowdown for security hardware in traditional high-end systems due to increased competition. One of the biggest drivers for these highend systems is video and remote monitoring via a tablet or smartphone. Even with the high-end installations, it is rare to have the security integrated into a ‘Jetsons-style home’ where television, lighting and audio sequences occur to thwart intruders. Furthermore, many of the traditional high-end installations are reserved (by price) for homes larger than five thousand square feet and mostly occur in new homes, not retrofit, limiting the opportunity in comparison to service providers. Device vendors will continue to be

a large portion of the market, representing more than 30%, through 2016. These device types will be a great opportunity for multifamily housing which is slated for strong growth due to rising rents, low vacancy rates and a declining market for sales of existing and new homes in 2014. However, USA housing market is forecast to rebound quickly in 2015, which will favor service providers and traditional high-end. How the housing market recovers in 2015 will help shape which category end-users will fall. A strong recovery could mean more traditional high-end homes, while a limited recovery in housing formations could result in a more favorable market for device vendors. Regardless of the outcome, IHS believes service providers are the middle of the road offering which can appease most end-users; as a result, service providers are in the best position to offer smart security devices over the next 3-5 years.

Open Software Platform for the Smart Home A

BB, Bosch, and Cisco plan to establish an international joint venture that will develop and operate an open software platform for smart home devices and applications. A shareholder agreement to this effect was signed on November 27, 2014. The joint venture is to be domiciled in Germany. The plan is subject to approval by the antitrust authorities. The companies involved expect that the joint venture will be able to commence operations at the beginning of 2015. For a home to be ‘smart,’ it is crucial that all the appliances and systems in the home e.g., washing machine, heating units, lamps and window blinds can simply and securely exchange data with each other as well as with smartphones

and tablets. The aim of the joint venture is to develop and operate an open software platform that will enable this simple exchange of data between different manufacturers’ devices. In the future, therefore, users will not have to worry about technological compatibility when operating their electric and electronic devices at home. The new platform will also make it possible to provide a range of services related to household devices, in areas such as energy management, security technology, and entertainment. This will help enable new business models; Software developers, for example, will be able to create a wide variety of apps for these areas of use. In addition to developing and operating a software platform, the compa-

What Does the Future Hold for Access Control as a Service? H

ow will the electronic access control industry embrace the cloud in the coming years? Will governments see the value in using commercial cloud resources? Will governments create standards and best practices to ease restrictions on cloud storage across borders? Will operational expenditure (opex)

options open the door to more SMB adoption? With the cost per door coming down for access control solutions, will the market opportunity for access control as a service (ACaaS) be negatively impacted? Many questions still exist for providers and future adopters of ACaaS; January 2015

80

however, IHS expects ACaaS to thrive over the long term – the global market size is expected to exceed $530 million by 2018 and $1.8 billion by 2025. Driving this growth will be the global adoption of cloud and virtualization in other sectors, not related to security, and the services associated with ACaaS.

www.indiasafe.com

CMYK

CMYK

International Updates

During the first half of 2014, IHS calculated that multi-tenant data center sales grew by 12.7% on a global basis. As it relates to access control, IHS expects the commoditization of access control hardware to draw more attention to value-added services and ROI. As a result, channel partners and providers who are more specialized in IT, integration and mobility (remote connectivity) could see more growth in the long term. Although the access control industry is inherently slow to adopt new technologies, end-user adoption and awareness are only half the battle. Unless they were born in the cloud, most integrators and installers must change a long standing mind set of selling boxes and components and begin selling services, features and concepts. Additionally, they must know the IT side of the business and be able to answer questions regarding redundancy, certifications, hacking, and other buzz words associated with cloudbased services and ACaaS. Although it is a difficult process, the access control industry is already moving in this direction. Starwood Hotels offer mobile keys over Bluetooth, banking headquarters have installed wireless locks and the

residential market is embracing mobile security at a rapid pace. For the questions listed above, the short answer is, Yes, and the access control industry will continue to embrace the cloud, albeit, at a much slower pace than originally projected. Today, most providers of ACaaS do not specialize in ACaaS only. As a result, ACaaS remains a small portion of most monitoring stations and integrators’ overall business. One reason why these channel partners do not specialize in only ACaaS is because it wouldn’t be profitable, at least not at the beginning. With the ACaaS model, a large number of accounts is critical so many channel partners are even holding off on providing managed services until more accounts are added. Additionally, most of these providers do not have a ‘true cloud’ model as defined by NIST. Most of these providers rely on only a handful of servers to provide services. Until end-users begin requesting and using ACaaS in droves and integration with video and other services transpires, IHS expects that this non-true cloud model will suffice for most end-users. Furthermore, IHS expects that gov-

ernments will continue to embrace the cloud, but since they must find ways to manage resource and security, which for the government, is often a lengthy and expensive venture. The US government has already started down this path with milCloud and other initiatives. For the EU, the European Cloud Partnership (Trusted Cloud) has acted as a starting point and blueprint for the future. Overall, IHS expects ACaaS to continue to grow and expand due to the flexibility of the offering not provided by on-site solutions. For example, endusers can manage the entire solution themselves, while outsourcing the infrastructure maintenance. Or they can pay an additional fee and the entire solution will be managed for them from monitoring, report printing, badging, granting access rights etc. Or they could choose to only outsource certain tasks and they can lump a portion (in some cases 100%) of the hardware cost into a monthly fee, reducing the barrier to entry. Hindering growth is the continued decline in the cost per door (hardware), privacy concerns, web-based panels, custom billing, hacking, cross border privacy agreements and market education.

Sony Xarina™ Technology in Grundig IP Cameras G

rundig’s new IP camera range uses Sony Xarina™ digital signal processing (DSP) technology, with 1.3MP and 2MP Sony Exmor™ CMOS sensor options. Xarina™ DSP is an all-in-one IP camera platform, combining image signal processing (ISP) and video stream encoding. It produces exceptional low light performance and wide dynamic range (WDR). “Xarina™ options are available for Grundig box cameras, indoor fixed domes, outdoor vandal domes and outdoor bullet cameras,” explained Andreas Franusic, Product Manager at Grundig, “Xarina™ makes the Grundig cameras extremely sensitive in low light. 3D Noise Reduction lowers the noise caused by chroma gain control, improving its signal-to-noise ratio and low light sensitivity. The cameras will also run at

up to 60fps, increasing sensitivity again and reducing motion blur. As light levels drop, the camera will remains in its colour mode for longer, with improved visibility, before IR illumination is activated. “The Quad Scan WDR, enabled by the Sony Exmor™ CMOS sensor, produces excellent image quality in highcontrast, heavily back lit scenes. We have kept the 1.3MP box camera option in our portfolio because it has a larger, 1/3” sensor to increase sensitivity still further, producing colour images at 0.03Lux.” The Xarina™ IP camera range produces quad, Progressive Scan video streams in H.264 and MJPEG formats. Full HD, 1080p streams can be used for recording and lower resolution 720p, D1 or CIF video streams (which transmit

more efficiently and use less bandwidth) can be used for PCs, tablets and smartphones, which do not display in Full HD. True day/ night functionality and IR LED illumination are standard across the range. SD/ SDHC card slots, PoE and ONVIF Profile S integration are included, with webserver access to remotely view, monitor and control Grundig cameras.

Consumer Video Surveillance Equipment in the Smart Home

T

he consumer and DIY video surveillance equipment market includes all equipment sold through in-store and online retail channels. In 2014, the global market size will top $1 billion USD for the first time with the US accounting for almost 65% of total revenue. The world market is still fairly evenly split between analog and network technologies. A large portion of endusers still choose to protect their homes or small businesses by purchasing an

analog video surveillance bundle consisting of cameras and a DVR purchased from a retailer. Now, high resolution alternatives utilizing HD TVI, HD CVI and AHD technologies are becoming available, offering up to full 1080p resolution. These will prove very popular in the consumer market. Unit shipments are forecast to grow rapidly over the next two years as this equipment is increasingly selected in preference to standard definition analog bundles. However, January 2015

87

standard definition analog bundles will not disappear entirely as many priceconscious consumers will continue to prefer analog bundles as an entry level system. The biggest story in the consumer video surveillance market is the growth in demand for network equipment. According to the latest forecasts from IHS Technology over 11 million consumer and DIY network cameras will be shipped worldwide in 2015.

International Updates

The vast majority of consumer network cameras are what IHS terms standalone network cameras. These cameras are designed for consumers to operate the camera as a standalone surveillance system without the need for separate recording hardware by utilizing cloud or edge storage. In the future we will see a greater proportion of cameras shipped offering smart home functionality with the potential to connect with third-party or same branded smart home systems.

IHS expects smart home capable cameras sold both separately and as part of a larger smart home package to be a major driver in the consumer video surveillance market. Increasingly the traditional suppliers to the consumer video surveillance market are diversifying with additional security and smart home product lines. At CES and later in 2015, IHS expects to see several suppliers announcing new smart home systems and related

enhanced camera functionalities. Video surveillance cameras in the smart home are taking a more prominent role. Video surveillance cameras in the home are not just for recording breakins. Remote viewing functionalities make them great for general monitoring. Most systems are motion alert capable and endusers can watch the live or recorded video on their smartphone or tablet, checking if the kids are home from school, or whether their pets are okay.

iOmniscient's Automated Response System wins The Australian Innovation Challenge

i

Omniscient has won ‘The Australian Innovation Challenge 2014’ for the most innovative Information and Communication Technology. The Award was for iOmniscient’s latest product which uses artificial intelligence to significantly reduce the response time for emergency services during accidents. The Automated Surveillance Ac-

tion Platform (ASAP™) is a system that recognizes that an accident or other incident has occurred using CCTV cameras. From the camera itself the system automatically locates the nearest available first responder (which could be a police vehicle, the fire brigade or other emergency services) and sends them a video

of the incident with instruction on how to reach it. The response time of a typical accident was consequently reduced from an average of 25 minutes to less than 5 minutes and greatly decreasedthe workload of control room staff. Being in its fourth year, The Australian Innovation Challenge rewards innovations to help drive some of the nation’s best ideas to market. The awards are run by the Australian newspaper in association with Shell and with the support of Australian Government’s Department of Industry. The Challenge received hundreds of entries and iOmniscient’s Automated Response System was finally selected in competition against four other shortlisted finalists. The different projects were judged against criteria such as technological excellence, novelty, level of international impact, sustainability and evidence of an explicit strategy for securing public adoption and use. January 2015

Rugged Monitors for Harsh Environments By Taita Chou – Moxa Product Manager

Introduction

W

ith the thousands of different monitors available on the market today, you might wonder why industrial users can’t find a suitable monitor for their industrial applications. The reason is simple: The vast majority of these thousands of different monitors are designed for commercial uses, and consequently cannot stand up to the harsh environmental conditions characteristic of industrial applications. Harsh conditions could include vibrations caused

by machinery, dust from manufacturing processes, as well as rain and strong sunlight for monitors located in outdoor environments. In short, under such harsh conditions, commercial monitors can only be expected to operate reliably for a relatively short period of time, whereas a properly designed industrial monitor should provide several years of reliable service. Unlike commercial monitors, rugged monitors are designed especially for mission-critical applications such

as marine, factory automation, railway, smart grid, and oil & gas. But how do you know that a particular product is suitable for a particular application? By verifying that the product has passed rigid operational standards that apply specifically to that application. Important standards include DNV for marine, ATEX for oil & gas, and EN 50155 for railway. As you might imagine, designing an industrial monitor that is required to meet such stringent operational standards is no easy task, and should only be attempted by corporations with ample experience and expertise in designing industrial products. The purpose of this white paper is to provide insight into what is required to design rugged monitors, with particular emphasis on what design features make a monitor suitable for harsh environmental conditions.

Rugged technology

design engineers must concentrate on the following four important aspects of the product’s design and verification process: Mechanical Design, Environmental Testing, Choice of Components and Material, and Electromagnetic Protection.

A good mechanical design enhances a monitor’s durability

L

ike a professional boxer getting ready for the big fight, an industrial monitor must be able to take a good punch, where in this case the punch could include random vibrations caused by machinery or vehicles passing nearby and shock resulting from unexpected, sudden changes in motion. In fact, for industrial applications, the incessant, day-after-day vibrations experienced by industrial products can be a major cause of failure. Since industrial monitors could be used in any number of scenarios, including offshore oil drilling, on ocean-going vessels, and other marine applications; railways, automobiles, and other rolling stock applications; as well as in manufacturing plants and power stations, you need to make sure that your industrial monitor manufacturer has designed for – and just as importantly, tested for – both vibration and shock. Rugged, industrial monitors are typically designed with an aluminum die cast housing, since this choice comes with a long list of plusses, not least of which is aluminum’s ability to retain its strength at the high operating temperatures that industrial monitors must contend with. In addition,

aluminum is lightweight, is resistive to corrosion, and has excellent electrical and thermal conductance properties. Whereas being ‘fanless’ may be the bane of entertainers the world over, it is a key requirement for industrial products in general, and industrial monitors in particular. We all know that electric currents produce heat, and consequently all electrically powered devices have the potential to get hot – extremely hot. This is particularly true of industrial products since the products often come with a solid, rigid exterior to protect the internal components from the elements. The problem with fans, however, is that regardless of how big or small they are, they’re always rotating to move cool air from outside the product’s housing to the interior to push the hot air out, and consequently, fans are subject to the wear

January 2015

95

and tear that comes from that rotational motion. But fans are prone to failure, which could at best cause operational delays, and at worst result in the destruction of your device. Consequently, industrial products are often required to rely solely on non-motive heat dissipation techniques to increase the product’s lifespan. One requirement for industrial monitors that you should not overlook is how the monitors will be mounted. The fact that you are limiting your selection to fanless monitors provides a certain amount of flexibility in this regard, since you won’t need to worry about airflow, changing fan filters, and related maintenance tasks. However, before deciding on a particular monitor, make sure it supports a mounting option that is safe and convenient for your application.

Environmental testing to verify a monitor’s reliability

B

eing industrial often means being dusty, humid, and outright wet, and consequently industrial products must be designed to work reliably even when frequently exposed to such conditions. Although for human beings dusty conditions can be coped with fairly easily by wearing the proper protective gear, for electronic equipment a little dust on the circuit board might result in a shutdown due to a short circuit, or in the worst case scenario, cause the equipment to overheat and catch fire. Exposure to water is another issue that industrial monitors must contend with. Regardless of the source of the water (rain, seawater, or other liquids), all water contains certain concentrations of salt or other minerals, which when wet make excellent conductors. If only a few drops of water are able to seep into the interior of the monitor and the water comes in contact with an internal circuit board, the result could be disastrous. Since water and dust protection are critical features for so many applications, the industry recognizes a standardized rating system for the level of protection offered by a device. The Ingress Protection (IP) rating uses a two digit code to indicate how well a device is protected from solid objects and water: Ingress protection is represented by IPxx, where the first x indicates the protection level against solid objects, and the second x refers to the protection level against liquids. For standard indus-

One requirement for industrial monitors that you should not overlook is how the monitors will be mounted

Rugged, industrial monitors are typically designed with an aluminum die cast housing, since this choice comes with a long list of plusses, not least of which is aluminum’s ability to retain its strength at the high operating temperatures that industrial monitors must contend with. In addition, aluminum is lightweight, is resistive to corrosion, and has excellent electrical and thermal conductance properties trial-grade devices, the minimum recommended rating is IP30, which would mean protection against items over 2.5 mm in diameter. For the most demanding industrial applications, an IP68 rating would provide the best protection against dust and water. A good middle of the road value is IP54, which is often used to define what it means for a product to be ‘fully rugged.’ Although some industrial applications may be mostly cold, mostly hot, or mostly somewhere in between, it is common practice to design products that provide reliable, long-term operation in a wide range of temperatures. For example, imagine for a minute what it would be like for an Ethernet switch or embedded computer sitting inside a roadside cabinet in the middle of Iowa, where it is freezing cold in the winter and blisteringly hot in the summer. In this case, a reasonable ‘safe’ operating temperature range for such products might be -40 to 70°C. To give you an idea of what kind of technological know-how is required to guarantee such an allencompassing temperature range, some brands of embedded computers advertised as being ‘industrial’ only support an operating temperature range of 0 to 60°C. Designing industrial monitors that can tolerate a wide temperature range presents an even greater challenge for manufacturers, since freezing cold temJanuary 2015

96

perature can cause white spots and LCD motion blur, and corrupt the output of onboard components in unpredictable ways. On the other side of the cold/ hot spectrum, high temperatures can cause an LCD to turn dark because of the nature of the liquid crystal display. In fact, for most monitors, display stability cannot be guaranteed unless the average temperature stays between 0˚C and 50˚C. Consequently, monitors guaranteed to operate normally at an expanded temperature range, for example, between -15°C and 55°C, give industrial operators a safer solution for many industrial environments. For industrial monitors, another (and perhaps more critical) issue is that the user must be able to see clearly what’s displayed on the monitor, even when viewing it in direct sunlight or under the glare of intense industrial lighting. At first hearing, this may seem somewhat nitpicky, but in fact, how many nits the monitor can generate is exactly what we need to pick at. First, something you’re familiar with. Some of the top smartphones available on the market today brag at being able to generate upwards of 700 nits. That’s pretty darn bright alright, but some industrial applications, particularly those that must operate without a hitch on bright, sunshiny days, could require a monitor that can produce between 1000 and 1300 nits.

The right choice of components and material can make a rugged design more user-friendly

A

lthough touchscreens of one kind or another have been around since the early 1970s, both the technology and applications have changed considerably since then, with the most recent craze being the tablet PC and smartphone. A relatively cheap touchscreen solution is the socalled resistive touch monitor, although screens of this type are by their very nature somewhat flexible, and consequently are too easily damaged to be of any use for many industrial applications. However, touchscreens that use PCAP (projective capacitive) sensors are suitable for industrial applications, in part because the exterior surface of the screens can be covered with a thick glass plate or similar material, making the screens more resilient and better able to cope with the harshness of industrial environments. An important issue for industrial applications is what we could refer to as ‘the nature of the touch.’ The typical smartphone, for example, is operated with one or two fingers, and if you live in a colder climate, you may have occasion to use ‘touchscreen-friendly gloves’ to operate your device. However, since there is no such thing as a ‘touchscreenfriendly rubber glove,’ industrial applications that require the operator to use rubber gloves would need a different

kind of solution. Fortunately, the sensitivity of industrial PCAP touchscreens can be improved to a high enough level, and the amount of noise minimized sufficiently, to provide users with a ‘glovefriendly touchscreen’ that can be operated with rubber gloves.

Electromagnetic protection reduces the influence of emi both on and from nearby equipment

A

s you might recall from basic physics, electric currents give rise to electromagnetic waves that radiate outwards from the conductor. For most electrical devices, this type of radiated electrical energy is unintended, and could turn into EMI (electromagnetic interference) for nearby devices. This is particularly crucial for newer electronic devices, which require much less power to operate and hence are more susceptible to low EMI levels. Industrial monitors will more than likely be used in EMI-rich environments, and consequently should be designed to operate reliably under such conditions. In fact, for an industrial monitor, EMI is a two-way street. That is, the monitor must not be susceptible to EMI produced by nearby equipment, and the monitor itself must not produce EMI that influences nearby devices. Industrial monitors use special shielding and implement clever techniques of

Moxa’s rugged monitor solutions

M

oxa’s rugged monitors combine the critical features needed to ensure the durability and reliability of the monitors when they are used for industrial applications. ‘Critical features’ in this case refers to every part of the monitor, including the exterior housing, all of the internal components, and of course the focal point of the monitor, the screen. As a result, Moxa’s rugged monitors have a full range of features needed for successful, long-term use in industrial environments: ● Flat panel mounting with IP54 ingress protection rating. ● Rugged aluminum housing. ● Projected capacitive multi-touchscreen technology. ● Wide operating temperature range. ● Brightness that exceeds 1000 nits. ● High resolution. ● Easily readable outdoors in direct sunlight. The bottom line is that Moxa’s rugged monitors are designed to operate reliably in a wide range of harsh environmental conditions, including environments that are subject to strong vibrations, extreme temperatures, and wet or dusty conditions.

Montessori School Advances Education with Axis and Milestone Video Stone Security in Utah finds unique way to increase parent participation in children’s schooling

D

ancing Moose Montessori School in Salt Lake City, Utah, has developed a unique way to increase parents’ participation in their children’s schooling, improve teacher evaluations without disturbing class, and expand overall school security. Milestone XProtect® Express video management software (VMS) and network cameras from Axis Communications help oversee daily operations at the school’s locations to deliver a high degree of security and provide parents with a window into their children’s learning. “The Axis-Mile-

stone solution has become a huge selling point for our school. Parents love the ability to drop off their children, who may be crying and suffering from separation anxiety, and check in after five minutes to see that their child is happy and engaged in the classroom. It’s really

powerful,” says Jennifer Duffield, Executive Director, Dancing Moose Montessori School. Dancing Moose Montessori School offers parents and students an unmatched learning experience with programs that have unique environments, are professional and safe, with processes that are transparent. Safety was naturally a key consideration, but the school wanted an effective security system that also allows parents to remotely monitor their children without interrupting

class. Milestone XProtect® Express IP video management software (VMS), 40 Axis network cameras and a pair of 42inch monitors comprise the monitoring system that allows parents and school administrators to observe students and teachers without interfering in classroom activities. Monitors are in the lobby with cameras set up throughout the school, and the system is custom-integrated with S2 Extreme access control – thanks to the Milestone open platform architecture. Parents have live access to their child’s classrooms without the distraction that their presence in the room would create. They can quickly and easily observe how their child learns and interacts with classmates and teachers. For administrators, the ability to monitor classrooms remotely means that teacher evaluations are no longer a distraction to students or the teacher. The integration of the video system with access control provides efficient management of safety

matters in the school. Peace of mind for parents, students, teachers and staff is a priority, and the state-of-the-art, integrated monitoring and security system goes a long way toward providing just that. The system, installed by Stone Security of Salt Lake City, is networked through Milestone XProtect Express VMS, Axis network cameras and an S2 Extreme audio/visual access control system. A 4U BCD video tower server is powered by HP with Netgear 24-port POE switches and a DMP intrusion system. Visitors, parents, staff, and teachers use unique access codes to enter the system, but only after verbal and visual confirmation. Once inside the facility, parents have permissions-based virtual access to the preschool, with views of authorized classrooms and outdoor areas. The Milestone XProtect® Smart Client interface displays different images on the monitors simultaneously being configured for as many as six camera feeds to be displayed on each screen.

“Parents can walk up to our monitoring stations with no experience in professional video systems and the intuitive Milestone software provides easy and secure access to live video – including control over camera angles. They flock to the monitors to observe their children learning, playing, eating, and interacting with teachers and fellow students,” says Duffield. “The IP-based Milestone system paired with Axis network cameras is easy to use and provides clear, highresolution images to both managers and parents at Dancing Moose Montessori School,” says Andy Schreyer, Stone Security, “Since Milestone and Axis operate as open platform technology, we can provide the flexibility to grow the system to future schools and add new integrations over time, creating equity in the system – in this case, access control. Milestone updates features and supports new Axis camera releases, eliminating the need for system replacement – it never becomes obsolete.”

cal Services of the General Security Management of the Madrid Council, Plettac Electronics has developed an automated license plate recognition (LPR) system, which integrates the high-resolution IP8332 cameras, the PC, and constantly updated databases to provide real-time identification and matching of license plate numbers, immediately alerting officers to the presence of stolen vehicles or other vehicles of interest.

Made for success Each patrol car has not just one, but three VIVOTEK cameras, as two IP8332 camera have been installed on the roof of the PMM’s patrol cars, and tasked with monitoring vehicles in the proximity and capturing imagery for use. Each camera is connected to an Internet-capable PC with which the PMM has equipped each patrol car. Based under the proposal of the Techni-

A

s for the camera itself, the IP8332 is a versatile 1-megapixel bulletstyle network camera that is perfectly suited for applications such as the PMM’s. It not only captures high-quality video, but can do so under varied lighting conditions both during the day, and at night with a removable IR-cut filter and IR illuminators effective at distances up to 15 meters. Moreover, the camera is enclosed in an IP66-rated housing to

ensure that it can withstand even harsh weather conditions. According to Plettac Electronics, the Madrid City Council instituted the security system project in order to provide the police with real-time information of the situation on the street as officers go about their patrols. With the help of components such as the LPR system, the project has been a brilliant success. VIVOTEK’s cameras are helping secure Madrid police’s patrol cars, and ensure the safety of police officers and the citizens of Madrid.

Avigilon HD Solution Helps Keep a Growing Community School Safe F

ounded in 1967, Parrs Wood High School in East Didsbury, Manchester, England, is a popular and growing community school that was rebuilt in 2000 to better accommodate its 1,500 high school pupils and 400 Sixth Form students aged 11 to 18. As part of its ongoing focus on student safety, the school decided to replace its aging analogue-based surveillance system, which did not provide adequate coverage, was beginning to fail, and ofJanuary 2015

fered poor image quality, particularly on replay. To help create the safest environment possible, the school recently upgraded to the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system for broader and more detailed coverage of the entire campus at any time of the day or night. The school installed 93 Avigilon HD cameras in key areas across campus, including six Avigilon HD 1 MP PTZ dome cameras and 13 Avigilon HD 2 MP cameras to monitor key entrance and exit points, thoroughfares, and outdoor areas and installed 64 Avigilon HD 2 MP and 10 Avigilon HD 1 MP cameras to monitor key circulation areas, staircases, corridors, and communal areas

within the buildings. Eugene Forbes, Head of Corporate Services at Parrs Wood High School said, “The Avigilon high-definition surveillance system was up and running seamlessly for the new academic year, providing maximum coverage within our tight timeline and budget – we could not be happier.” Delivering an excellent user experience, ACC offers simplified functions such as the thumbnail search to pinpoint small changes in large areas, provides more camera views, and facilitates navigation from camera to camera to help users quickly find an incident, review it, and accurately identify individuals and

events. “Using the software’s advanced features, we can follow individuals from camera to camera with no jerkiness or lost detail on replay, helping us make faster and more accurate decisions,” noted Forbes. The school, along with local law enforcement, has been very impressed with the Avigilon system’s usability, which has played a key role in several investigations to date. “We intend to review the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system on an annual basis to highlight our achievements and identify new areas for coverage as we continually strive to improve our school’s health and safety culture,” concluded Forbes.

Dredging Boat Trashed by Vandals Secured with OPTEX Detector A

dredging boat moored near Scunthorpe and attacked by vandals who smashed lights and temperature gauges, is now being protected by a GSM based intrusion detection system using an OPTEX outdoor sensor and linked to an alarm receiving centre (ARC). Ebsford Environmental was working to remove silt along the Bottesford Beck tributary that feeds into the River Trent for four weeks as a flood prevention measure. While the dredging boat was moored overnight, the vessel was vandalised, and although it did not stop the team from finishing the job, it was both time consuming and costly to repair. Dean Bolton, Managing Director at Eyewatch Secu-

rity, was approached by Ebsford Environmental and recommended a VX402 GSM system that comprises an OPTEX outdoor PIR incorporating a GSM transmission module developed by TAD Electronics, monitored remotely at Eyewatch’s ARC. Nick Oxley, Site Foreman for Ebs-

ford Environmental says that the OPTEX solution gave him peace of mind, “Although the damage was fairly minor, it was still a huge inconvenience to take the boat out of action to be repaired,” he says, “And who knows, the damage could be worse next time. “After the detector was installed we did not have any further issues, there was no more damage and we also did not have any false alarms.” Dean Bolton, Managing Director at Eyewatch Security says large parts of Scunthorpe are now protected by OPTEX detectors, “We specify OPTEX detectors on most sites we work on due to their reliability and solid design.

As in this situation, the detector worked as an excellent deterrent and no further damage was done to the dredging boat.” Ricky Miwa, Managing Director of OPTEX Europe says the combination of

the VX402 sensor with the GSM transmission technology provided by TAD Electronics provides a great solution to monitor intrusion detection in remote or isolated sites. This outdoor sensor

features small animal immunity which drastically reduces unwanted alarms triggered by wildlife, which is an important feature when protecting a boat moored on a river bank.”

Securing Bank of Rakyat Indonesia

Bank of Rakyat Indonesia implements Synergis IP access control system to restrict access to vulnerable areas and extends BRIZZI one-card application to include employee access

Business challenge

B

ank of Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) is one of the largest government owned banks in Indonesia. Incorporated in 1895, BRI was originally established in Purwokerto, Central Java, as a financial institution serving the people of Indonesian nationality. Today, BRI has over 10,000 outlets serving 30 million retail clients and a growing corporate clientele. BRI’s headquarters are located in Jakarta and serve as the center of their national operations in a state-of-the-art

35-story building. As one of Indonesia’s largest banks, the organization places a very high importance on security; not only to ensure its proprietary business information stays safe but also to protect employees and visiting clients. With the aim of enhancing its headquarter security, BRI was looking to expand its physical access control system. While server rooms were restricted with a stand-alone access control system, the technology was extremely basic and could not accommodate their plans to implement access control enterprisewide. BRI also wanted a more advanced and feature-rich January 2015

104

IP-based access control system to protect main entrances and exits and other sensitive areas. An open-architecture system was also important to accommodate device selection and other system integrations in the future. With the help of local integrator, Golden Solution Indonesia, BRI chose Genetec Security Center, the unified security platform with Synergis IP access control. According to Yusuf, Head of Security at BRI, “Security Center met all of our needs in terms of system functionalities within our budget. It also gave us the flexibility to leverage advanced card technology for a unique one-card application with our BRIZZI payment card.”

room areas, offices and VIP guest locations. HID Global VertX ® controllers and readers were chosen to secure all doors. The Synergis IP access control system is also managing 12 tripod barrier gates at the main entrances of the headquarters. Since all employees and some customers already carry the BRIZZI payment card from BRI, the bank wanted to leverage the flexibility of the system and the hardware to use this card for access credentials as well. Today, the 32-bit smartcard not only serves as a pre-paid debit card but is also used by employees to access various areas of the office building. “The BRIZZI card is designed to serve multiple functions including a prepaid debit card for purchases and

for road tolls from merchants who are affiliated with the bank,” said Yusuf, “By choosing Synergis and HID, we were able to add the access control application within our headquarters. This makes it easier for our employees who now only have to carry one card and this also helps us build on this bank-affiliated innovation.”

Granular access privileges and visitor management secure vulnerable areas

I

n order to ensure employees only have access to the areas and floors that are necessary to their functions, BRI was able to create access control groups and pre-assign specific access control privileges to each group for

easy cardholder enrollment. Special after-hour privileges are provided to senior-level employees who may require access beyond regular office hours. The ability to pull detailed access control reports from Synergis has been instrumental to the security team at BRIZZI. During any active investigations, access control event reports provide a clearer timeline of when events might have occurred. Creating monthly reports on visitor access, event logs and system health status have become routine for the BRI security team. For clients and business affiliates who visit the headquarters regularly, the built-in Visitor Management feature in Synergis has facilitated the check-in and check-out process.

eneo IP Video Cameras Guard the Premises of the Largest Vehicle Dealer in Finland Video surveillance with eneo network cameras deters vandals and criminals and provides evidence in questions of liability

A

utotalo Laakkonen (Eng: Laakkonen Vehicle Dealership) is the biggest car dealer in Finland. The family-run business employs 1,400 people in its current 30 outlets across the country. The big-name brands sold include BMW, Audi, VW, Subaru and Peugeot. Overall turnover in 2013 was €700 m. The company asked BLC Turva (eneo's partner firm and the largest security integrator in eastern Finland) to provide security and access control systems for its branches. BLC was voted the best enterprise in its sector in Finland in 2014. The company is based in Joensuu,

not far from Laakkonen's headquarters. The security expert has been providing complete security solutions to Autotalo Laakkonen since 2005. Apart from video management software from Mirasys, network cameras from eneo are also integral system components: over 250 IP domes and IP bullet cameras have been installed to date. The installations run from 10 cameras up to 35, depending on the size of the dealership in question.

ideo surveillance performs multiple security functions for the vehicle dealerships in the Laakkonen Group. Particular attention is paid to staff safety. A lot of money is taken in the course of a working day at cash points, such as the service reception or the spare parts counter. There have been hold-ups late in the day on some occasions in the past. Cameras (such as the high-resolution eneo IP dome PXD-2080MIR from the Callisto series) raise the feeling of safety amongst staff, act as a deterrent and can

deliver evidence in case of crime. Round-the-clock surveillance is required on the forecourt. Vandalism and minor thefts (such as tyres) are by far the biggest problem here. It is rare that a complete car is stolen. Models such as the PTZ network dome PXD2018PTZ1080 (designed for day & night deployment at temperatures from -40°C to 50°C) are deployed to cut the number of incidents from every-so-often to zero.

Video monitoring of the roller gates to the workshop is important for liability reasons. The cameras document the general state of each vehicle brought in for servicing. This enables the validity of any claims to damages to be checked, such as scratches to paintwork.

Sophisticated installation solutions

J

ani Lehikoinen has worked for the group since 2005 and is responsible for all Laakkonen’s real estate holdings and properties. He says, “I was convinced by eneo’s price/ performance ratio. The integration in Mirasys also ran smoothly and we have had very few disturbances to date. We really appreciate the installation solutions; I’m particularly thinking here about the AK-5 easy installation box for the Callisto domes. Among other items, we’ve successfully deployed the new PXD-2080 series models with the connection box in our installations. You can see that someone has clearly put some thought into this.” Juha Oksanen, Senior Key Account Manager at BLC Turva, adds: “The weather here in Finland is generally

anything but clement. That places stringent requirements on the equipment. However, eneo’s video cameras are robust and can cope without problem. In addition, the product design remains pleasingly constant, so that the bullets and domes don’t change with each new generation. The support provided by eneo, sometimes even in Finnish, is also exemplary.”

The system was installed by Dallmeier working with its partner Total Recall, a video-centric security technology provider that has specialised in providing control centres, video network design and management for cities and municipalities the past 25 years. “With the new technology in the Panomera® cameras from Dallmeier, you can monitor the crowd as a whole, and at the same time zoom into view specific details in the event of an incident,” says Peter Millius of Total Recall. During the concert, the images were analysed in a truck stationed at the site

by representatives of various police and government agencies. “We were glad that we were able to help with security for this great event,” says Joe McDevitt of Dallmeier USA, “This exercise has once again proven

the performance capability of multifocal sensortechnology particularly for large expanses. The feedback from the police and government agencies regarding the picture quality was thoroughly positive.”
