Only one other person seems resistant to the changes: Sonja, a beautiful local bar owner with a tragic past. Half a mile upriver, a strange new establishment sits outside of town. Alan Rivers wakes up one morning and discovers all the adults in his neighborhood and worldwide are in a deep sleep, never to awaken. He and a group of friends struggle for survival in a world that has suddenly regressed. The struggle is compounded by nature, outsiders, and other kids within his community. Several months after the adults went to sleep, they discover it wasn't a one-time event. Around the age of 18, everyone becomes a sleeper. Believing it's the premature end of life, the struggle for control grows more violent. As the opposing faction takes over, Alan must choose between living under their control with no preparation for the future, or overthrowing a bully who has grown into a tyrant. After losing someone he'd grown to love, Alan is now faced with his own impending birthday when he will find out what a Sleeper really is.
Since childhood, homicide detective Michael Bennett has been cursed with the ability to converse with the 'immediate dead'. This ability has given him access to the most important witness at every murder scene; the victim. Nicknamed The Reaper by his colleagues, and isolated by his gift, Bennett prefers to work alone. When Sandy Cooper becomes the newest in a long string of partners assigned to Bennett, she quickly realizes there's something very different about him. When doctors begin dying in brutal fashion, the unlikely partners must overcome not only their differences, but their pasts to stop a killer out for revenge.

Book Excerpt
Prologue It covered the raw land in a fog of death. Newly cooled rock was sterilized where it lay, and sulfur rain sizzled as it fell into the fog from above. Mindless, it floated, but great pleasure was found as it infected and destroyed even the simplest of life. Eons passed, and eventually life – true life – developed. Then the fog rose again, floating, infecting, killing. Massive beasts ruled the earth, and it gorged. Six times the fog rose, and six times it floated until it was sated. Each time, it settled in a stupor, congealing among the bones and flesh it consumed into a black mass that pulsed on occasion. At last, the time came when it rose and found a new master ruled the earth. Tiny compared to the previous beasts, these creatures possessed what the others did not: fear. All things feared something, but these! These could anticipate fear, could see the darkness in anything. They could learn to fear anything. So again it feasted. Across the land it floated, infecting and killing. Until it was sated. And it slept.
Author Q&A How do you develop your plots and characters? Almost all of my ideas start out as "What if..." In the case of Evil Upriver, it starts off as "What if a stranger arrives in town and..." I love the idea of a stranger in a strange environment. There's so much potential for conflict, character exploration, and plot. You never know the true someone unless they are forced out of their normal. (#ProTip) What books and/or authors have most influenced you? There are literally too many to name, so I'll go by genre. Horror is Stephen King and Brian Lumley. Fantasy, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. Historical fiction, John Jakes and Bernard Cornwell. Sci Fi, Arthur Clark and Nivens/Pourenelle Crime, John Sandford and either Baldacchi or Conley.
Were there real life inspirations for the characters in Evil Upriver?
YES! Lyles... who may be protag/antag, is based on my high school librarian. And he knows it. ;)
What was most difficult in writing this book? Being patient and letting it develop. I'm learning with novels 6-10 (published & unpublished) that the story isn't always told in the first draft. Or the published version of the short story. Or the version you finished two years ago. In today's technological
Do you have any projects currently in the works? Several. I'll have a self -published shared universe novel coming out in April 2018. I have 3 stand alone books in various stages, another Michael Bennett novel, and two more (stand alone) novels in my head.
As a multi-genre author, if you had to choose just one genre, what would it be and why?
I hate labels. But if I had to choose, I'd go with YA... becuae i could write anything in any genre and get away with calling it YA. So it's a trick answer to a trick question.
