Penny Miller is a born and bred Oklahoman. She has a nursing degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College and is a Registered Nurse in addition to being an author. Penny wrote her first short story complete with illustrations when she was seven-years-old and has been writing ideas and bits of dialogue ever since. As a child, her mother regularly read to her classic faery tales. It was those stories that ignited her imagination and attraction to the magical and whimsical. With her three children Robert, Amy and Cheyenne, she carried on the tradition of introducing them to fantasy and other worlds through stories. Three years ago, she co-authored erotic romance e-books under the pseudonym Jp Archer. At that time her daughters asked her when she was going to write stories they could read. Penny went to her keyboard and dug in and her debut solo novel, Colorblind, was born. Most importantly, creating a story in the Young Adult/Paranormal genre is where she found her true voice as a writer. She hopes readers will become fans of her heroine Harmony Phillips and follow her story through the next phases; Color Full and Colorless.

Author Q & A Q. How do you develop your plots and characters? A. The characters are easier for me than the plots I think. They are alive in my head. As real as any memory I have. Harmony is a blend of my two daughters. She’s sassy like my oldest daughter, but with a soft heart and naivety that I love about her. But she’s growing up, like my own girls; evolving into a woman before my eyes and on my pages. The other characters ‘become’ as I need them. Though I do like to find a picture of someone who represents the character for me and keep it on my laptop as an inspiration. Tesch looks a lot like David Henrie for instance. The plots, don’t laugh, come from dreams I have. I fell asleep listening to ‘ by Counting Crows and had a dream about a girl who sees yellow for the first time when she cuts into some egg yolks. It was such a vivid dream, I built a story around it. As for the rest, I’m a punster, I write by the seat of my pants. I try to solve my character’s problems for them. But so often in life, when you fix one thing, you find out it’s not the root cause and there are more problems to solve. Q. What books and/or authors have most influenced you? A. Well, of course I love Fairy Tales. And my mom read them to me until I was able to read for myself. Like any kid, I wanted magik to be real. In my teens I read all the Dragon Lance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I loved those books, and they did inspire me a great deal. I also like Ron Aspirin and his Myth Adventure series. I like how the hero isn’t really a hero at all, but more of a good kid that has a knack for getting into trouble with a gang of good friends that help him out, and back in to trouble, more often than not. But my most favorite is Laurell K. Hamilton; her stuff is amazing. And of course, William Shakespeare. Q. What inspired you to begin writing the “Color” series? A. I wrote the ‘Color’ series for my daughters. I had co-authored three erotic, 18+ romance novels for e-publication and while I was working on them my girls, who were 13 and 8 at the time, kept asking me when I would write something they read. So I had the dream and thought, ‘this would make a cool story for them’. And that’s how it began.
Author Q & A (Continued) Q. What was most difficult in writing this book? A. The most difficult part was finding a way for Harmony to begin to fulfill her destiny but at the same time keep the pace going AND try to see where I was going to end the story. I read three books and several articles on how to take over a country and start a revolution. I am probably on some Homeland Security watch-list by now for malcontents and seditionists. Q. What is the message you’d like for readers to receive from your books? A. What I like about Harmony is that no matter how powerful she becomes, she doesn’t instantly look to magik for a solution. She uses it, yes, but it’s not her ‘go-to’ move. Most of her ideas require effort on her part to solve her troubles. That’s what I would like my readers to get out of the books. That no matter who you are, there are no easy, quick-fix answers for life’s real problems. You have to put some thought and effort into making your life better. Oh, and I would like them to laugh, cry and cuss at or with the characters. In the end, I write to entertain people, and that’s what I want for them, to feel entertained. Q. How long did it take you to write this book? took considerably longer than . I’d say about 18 months. For one thing, it’s a longer book. We are really getting into Harmony as a person and her Gaia-given destiny. There is a lot of ground to cover. For another, though I would be thrilled to death for writing to be my only occupation, alas, I must still work a regular job to keep food on the table and clothes on our backs. I’m a registered nurse in a management position that requires a lot of time. I work 50 to 60 hours a week. So, I don’t have as much time to write as I would like. Q. Do you have any other projects in the works? A. Oh gosh yes! I have another manuscript about a third way done waiting in the wings that I can see developing into another YA series; About a pair of twins Crimson (girl) and Royal (boy) who find out that they are thunderbirds, messengers and warriors for the Great Sun in the battle against evil worshippers of Misikinubic the Snake God. It’s based somewhat on Native American legends on thunderbirds. And I have a few stand-alone projects I would love to finish; and . But I want finish the Color Magik series first. I have some rather loyal readers that have threatened bodily harm if I don’t. LOL.
