The Indo-Pacific region expands from the East coast of Africa to the West coast of South America. It includes South East Asia and the Gulf. In 2013, the Australian Defence White Paper “Indo-Pacific Strategic Arc” officially relocated Australia there (prior, it belonged to the Pacific region) and placed it on its centre. It wasn’t a surprise. The Indo–Pacific region’s emergent geopolitical importance rivals only with economic value of the maritime trade it hosts. The claim, however, remains controversial in diplomatic circles. The Indo-Pacific Region is an obvious alternative to Atlantic-centric global visions, and Australia’s rights to leadership clash with China’s position as the region’s centre of gravity.
