A triangular site in Perungudi, Chennai, in which 4 types of housing units had to be accomodated. A type = 1BHK, 1T B type = 2BHK, 2T C type = 3BHK, 2T D type = 3BHK, 3T A total of 200 units had to be accomodated. So these 4 different types of units according to their square footage were stacked over one another. A type = 24 Units B type = 72 Units C type = 56 Units D type = 48 Units Intermediate spaces between the stacks were created to allow flow of wind into the central courtyard. Lift and staircase towers were then placed at certain distances. These stacks were then lined along the periphery of the site and the building blocks were staggered to allow space for vertical gardening. This was the basic concept of the design and has been respresented diagramitacally on the right

Passive Air Conditioning The plans are very open and airy owing to the hot and humid climate. It also further helps to cut lighting costs during the day as the spaces remain illuminated. According to different conditions and needs during different times of the day curtains or shaders can be used. All the plans have a common layout. No drawing room has been provided. Instead a sitting lounge has been provided facing a living cum dining room. As one enters inside he is directly in the sitting lounge. From the lounge we enter directly into the living cum dining area. To the left there is a parttion wall (this case is different for the 1bhk) before which we have a shelf with the TV and other different elements of the household. This partition wall has been provided keeping in mind the Indian context. 1.The positive point here is that due to the air supply there is dramatic improvement in the indoor air quality. And as passive cooling has already been mentioned earler there will be a huge annual saving in electricity costs thereby increasing the the cost effectiveness of the design further. 2. The second benefit from this design is that during day time there is no need of using lights and bulbs for illumination. By choosing the right type of glass electricity costs can be desreased dramatically further 12

Vertical Gardening The vertical gardens help in balancing the microclimate and filters dust partcles contained in the Urban environment The plants and their characteristics produce humidity, absorb CO2 and dust particles, producing oxygen and protect the building from radiation and acoustic pollution. This not only improves the quality of living spaces, but gives way to dramatic energy savings year round. Since alternate blocks project outwards so every house hold has a nearby vertical garden to benefit from

Prefabricated Modular Construction Each module has its own steel frame providing structural integrity for the buildings. After delivery by truck indivudual modules are put into place by crane. Cuts construction costs into half by saving time and requiring substantially fewer and cheaper workers.

Use of Well at Site The excess of the harvested rain water is let into the well in the site. This replenishes the ground water table in the site and also the surrounding areas. The water from the well is directed to a gound water tank from where the water is used for vertical irrigation.

Using glass in layers

The different types of glass shown here have been used keeping in mind user and space requirements. The use of glass in layers has been incorporated for best results. Given below are the properties of these different types of glass.

Study of Parametricism - A new ‘Style’ of Architecture

Complex configurations that are latent with multiple readings can be constructed as a parametric model. The parametric model might be set up so that the variables are extremely Gestaltsensitive. Parametric variations trigger gestaltcatastrophes, i.e. the quantitative modification of these parameters trigger qualitative shifts in the perceived order of the configuration. This notion of parametric figuration implies an expansion in the types of parameters considered within parametric design. Beyond the usual geometric object parameters, ambient parameters (variable lights) and observer parameters (variable cameras) have to considered and integrated into the parametric system. The site for housing was located at Raipur, Chattisgarh. Raipur has a very hot and dry climate. during summers temperatures rise to a whooping 48 degrees Celsius. So the design required the incorporation of certain elements which provided relief from the heat and vegetation which further added to cooling. In this project the main idea was to create a sustainable habitat. So a large number of green spaces were created. Green walls were an important part of the design. These walls reduce radiant heat and also play an important role in improving indoor air quality. Projected balconies on the southwest help in mutual shading of the building and provides relief

6th Semester Design Studio Project This was an early studio project which was proposed at Raipur. A hundred bedded hospital designed at Shankar Nagar, this was more of a learning experience where space planning is concerned. Being more of a functional genre this studio project gave more insight to horizontal as well as vertical zoning. This exercise was very informative as several aspects of planning were gauged including knowledge of standards and codes, incorporation and installation of equipments and machienery and their marraige with the architecture of the building had to be considered However aesthetics were also given due importance and much work was also done on the 3d visualisation for the first time 28

06.

3rd Semester Studio Design project This was the first building design studio project, a primary school. The main idea was to create a dynamic form, something to which students could easily relate to, something that was fun to be in. The shape of the building was inspired from a boat in water. A boat signifies journey, a journey for students from childhood to adolescence. The typical plan had clasrooms flanked around a central playground for asembly and other activities with a stage. The top floors were to be used as an indoor playing court thereby increasing the height of the building at one end. 29

This is a Commercial Complex and Hotel which is being built at plot no 13, Naya raipur, Chhattisgarh The client wanted an iconic building so basically a bold sweeping form was proposed for this building. The building had a rectangular site and so an elliptical plan was proposed for it with a central atrium

Along with the bold and dynamic form the landscape too has to speak a lot about itself. Spaces have been segregated at levels with the use of various interesting landscape elements. Different types of spaces have been created for the people to enjoy and relax. Trees and shrubs have been spaced out at certain intervals to improve the outdoor environment. Raipur has a very harsh hot and dry climate. The air is mostly hot and the landscape will help decrease the heat and provide relief.

Tensile structures have been provided at the entrance and over the outdoor sitting to provide shade from the sun and rain. Granite and terracota have been used mostly in the landscape. Along with the tensile structure trees with large canopies have been planted at intervals to provide natural shade and further improve outdoor air quality. The overall design has been conceptualised in a way to provide a unique shopping and hangout experience

Finalist in Design Competition An urban proposal for a street market complex, the retail facility primarily comprises of a central spine with traditional bazaars, which is flanked on either sides by high-end retail and commercial development. The central spine, with a lively area buzzing with traditional bazaars reflects the local flavour of Raipur with all sorts of exotic crafts, antiques and collectables for sale.

Adjacent to the central spine is a row of up-market showrooms and retail outlets. These run two storey high with a mezzanine level. The upper two floors are designed to house commercial development consisting of restaurants and offices.

An outdoor play area is created with a specific design for children to play. The area is designed as a modern playground having recreational equipment such as the rides, sandbox, trapeze rings, playhouses, and mazes, many of which will help children develop physical coordination, strength, and flexibility, as well as providing recreation and enjoyment. A botanical lanscaped garden has been created adjacent to the childrens play area. The green lawn will houses a variety of vegetations along with exotic and native lanscape. The lawn has been adorned with tensile canopies, enabling people to sit in shade and relax. The open space will be weekend getaway for the entire family and people of all age groups. 46

The overhead Metro Station is designed right at the centre of the Airport City-side thus providing a fast and convenient connectivity with both domestic and international terminals making it an integral part of the multi-modal Interchange Transportation Hub at chennai airport. The building has to be subtle yet dynamic in form justifying its central location in the site yet not overpowering the Airport Terminals. The building thus designed with portal frame being inspired from the now famous V-columns of the Airport adheres to the language of the whole campus and also gives a unique identity of its own.

By studying precedent campus forms a number of strategies emerged: perimeter, linear, axial, centralized or the grid. Each strategy tells a story about the site’s character and disposition. Elements of the ideas found in the earlier explorations appear in the final design (number 6). This design represents the best elements of campus design. It has a clear perimeter, central core, multiple axes, and a compact grid. But the design is more than a sum of its parts. Its a unique inscription on the landscape demarcating the beginning of a new institution.

The site is located north of the city of Mandi, The only access to the site is through the MDR 23 that crosses from teh middle of the site alongwith the perinial waterway. It is accessed through a bridge that connects to the lower portion of the site. This road is also the main access from the nearest airport in Bhunter. Surface elevation & slope analysis: The land rises to a height of 420 m within its boundary. Majority of the site has slopes above 60%. Two large parcels of land in the north-east and south-west portions allow for majority of the development. Care has to be taken to conserve the slopes as far as possible to mantain vegetation and avoid soil erosion. It would also be cost effective to build on the lower terrains and lower elevations. the lowest point of the site is in the southwest corner.

Surface Hydrology : The study of the the ridges and the valleys, help determine the drainage pattern on the site. There are only a few areas where prominent water channels are existent. It has to be seen in the design process that we mantain these or carefully realign them as per the need. Since the slopes go futher above our site the extent of the catchment area of each drain is to be seen while working with the design of these channels. Vegetation Pattern : The site has a wide variety of flora. The canopy is generally disperse and it has to be seen that majority of the vegetation be preserved during the development of the campus.

The Campus is in a hilly terrain and not easy to navigate. We have studied the site carefully and have created multiple opportunities to connect and interact. There are layers of zones that follow the contours that have distinct functions and identity. These are then cross connected by various means to create multiple opportunities for interaction. The zone closest to the river is the most active zone. As one goes up the hills, the zones keep changing to end up with the most calm and passive zone at the edge of the campus uphill making a quiet transition to the natural landscape.

When the building is not in use as an auditorium it functions as an indoor sports complex for variuus sports activities throughout the year

The main auditorium is flanked by 2 additional seating aisles which augments the capacity of the auditorium when required and in general acts as courts for indoor sports

One large main auditorium serving the purpose throughout the year

Integration of multiple activities in single infrastructure leads to better utlisation of spaces and facilities

Complex configurations that are latent with multiple readings can be constructed as a parametric model. The parametric model might be set up so that the variables are extremely Gestalt-sensitive. Parametric variations trigger gestalt-catastrophes, i.e. the quantitative modification of these parameters trigger qualitative shifts in the perceived order of the configuration. This notion of parametric figuration implies an expansion in the types of parameters considered within parametric design. Beyond the usual geometric object parameters, ambient parameters (variable lights) and observer parameters (variable cameras) have to considered and integrated into the parametric system.
