PROJECT ARCHITECT: BLOCHER PARTNERS INDIA

A holiday residence complex with 650 bungalows, a clubhouse, restaurant, pool, spa, bistro and extensive sports facilities is going up in the Indian state of Gujarat. With sustainability in mind, and through the use of recycled materials, an area is being developed in this dry and hot region that resembles an oasis, its streets lined with date palms and lush green areas.

16

Construction is based on traditional Indian building techniques, reinterpreted using modern technological knowledge.

In particular, the local climate has been taken into consideration the structures have been designed to be highly resistant to earthquakes.

The project is being brought together with a charitable organization – India’s Hunnarshala Foundation – which creates new perspectives for disadvantaged youth and brings know-how home to the region.

Rammed earth construction has been used extensively. All building materials are regionally available.

ZEBEIN.STORE RETAIL INTERIOR DESIGN

PHOTOGRAPH OF STORE FROM CENTRE

PRINCIPAL ARCHITECT: STUDIO ANTARAAGAM

The client is a clothing brand startup called ‘Zebein’ who specialise in smart casuals. Their idea was to have something simple yet contemporary and also something which compliment their clothing philosophy.

24

Keeping this in mind the store has been designed to bring nature and its elements within a retail space. All elements are raw and have the look and feel of the tropics with a contemporary touch. Walls have been painstakingly hand plastered to evoke an earthy feel to the space.

Mango wood has been used in the furniture and antique traditional accessories convey a traditional emotion. Sleek metal elements have been introduced as a contrast and therefore the space has its unique expression of a contemporary retail space.

The initial idea with the materials was to use lime plaster for the walls, use cane and natural wood, and use brass as a highlight for the hangers and accesories. However because of the finished walls in the existing space lime plaster was not delivering the desired effect. So the plaster was broken and then painstakingly handplastered again by the masons to evoke a natural and earthy feeling. This was coated in texture paint again and handpainted with muddy patterns. 10 mockups were done on site to achieve this but the end result was fruitful

27

The store is a retail space of 900 sqft. Apart from the main display area the space has a back office, a storage area, a small pantry, trial rooms and a toilet. As one enters he/she is surrounded by a introductory vestibule space which is flanked by an antique cabinet which has some brass accesories, some plants and some booklets which talk about the brand. A small sitting area is provided for the elderly or a partner who can sit and read while the main patron is shopping.

Though the total area is not huge having this entrance space provides a laid back atmosphere and also sparks interest in the patron to know more before they indulge into shopping. Also because it is a startup brand this space also has a lasting impression in the mind of the customer as it is unlike any other regular retail space

ZEBEIN STORE

28

ZEBEIN STORE

PHOTOGRAPH OF LOUNGE AREA

The entire store has been done in mango wood painted in natural oil. The natural texture of the mango wood compliments the texture of the walls. Standing hangers have logs of mango wood at the base and brass pipes molded to the hanger shape. The heavy logs provide a sturdy base for the sleek hangers and also providesa rustic design statement. Some of the display furniture is directly a chunk of the tree which add to this raw and rustic design choice.

29

A lot of greenery has been added to the space which makes it look refreshing and is another design choice which separates this space from the other retail spaces. Also brass compliments the rustic whites and the saturated textures of the mango with the greenery as a catalyst.

The outlet has another respite in the lounge area where people can sit around when their partner is trying the clothes. This space uses cane and mango wood furniture with industrial lamps. Also the textiles and rugs are jute and linen which further highlight the design statement of using natural materials with sleek metallic contemporary counterparts.

Galaxy 90 is one of the biggest banquets in east Ahmedadabad with a sprawling interiors of 10,000 sq feet and pristine lawns with a magnificient ambience. With a huge car park capacity of more than 400 cars Galaxy 90 also has a huge party plot with a separate kitchen for for events.

30

The design language is simple with modern geometry used in a traditional way so that it does justice to weddiings or any such events. The requirement of Galaxy Group was to achieve the best out of immidiately available materials. This entire project has been completed only in a period of 5 months from design to completion.

The main challenge was the extremely small timeframe alloted to the project. Therefore a truss system was designed considering the clear span required for the building. All other construction techniques were decided considering the speed and availability of resources

VISUALISATION OF OVERHEAD METRO, CHENNAI

TYPE: TRANSPORTATION COST: 60 CRORES AREA: 18,000 SQM STATUS: BUILT

3D VISUALISATION BY AUTHOR

ARCHITECT: PELL FRISCHMANN

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) consisted of a total of 31 stations of which 9 stations were under our scope divided into Package 1 and 5. The nature of work included producing 1. General Arrangement Drawings for stations 2. Detail Design for stations 3. Above Ground Structures 4.Evacuation Shafts and 5. Signages

34

The overhead Metro Station was designed right at the centre of the Airport City-side thus providing a fast and convenient connectivity with both domestic and international terminals making it an integral part of the multimodal Interchange Transportation Hub at Chennai airport.

The building had to be subtle yet dynamic in form justifying its central location in the site yet not overpowering the Airport Terminals. The building thus designed with portal frame being inspired from the now famous V-columns of the Airport adheres to the language of the whole campus and also gives a unique identity of its own.

Throughout the design process for IIT Indore, the focus remained on creating a world class campus. By studying precedent campus forms a number of strategies emerged: perimeter, linear, axial, centralized or the grid. Each strategy tells a story about the site’s character and disposition. Elements of the ideas found in the earlier explorations appear in the final design (number 6). This design represents the best elements of campus design. It has a clear perimeter, central core, multiple axes, and a compact grid. But the design is more than a sum of its parts. Its a unique inscription on the landscape demarcating the beginning of a new institution.

3D MODEL OF FIN PATTERN

ARCHITECT: BLOCHER PARTNERS

The design for a facade of a commercial building of 12 floors. The louvered system has been modified into flaps or wings which open like the wings of a butterfly and create different geometries. The idea was to create a dramatic facade which is always organic in nature as per the composition and depends of the usage of the inhabitants

40

Each module consits of four wings or fins which incorporates a metal mesh of geometric patterns. The geometric pattern was used to allow certain percentage of light and air when the glass is either closed or in open position. The exercise was to calculate the percentahe of light and air through iterations of the member sizes and the openings.

The inspiration of the patterns were from the study of various fractal geometries and the most viable pattern which could be lasercut in huge quantities. The mechanism is a simple gear cut in half which functions on moving a lever and the fins open up creating dramatic patterns on the facade

STUDY CUM RESEARCH THESIS

STUDY OF PARAMETRICISM, A NEW ‘STYLE’ OF ARCHITECTURE

GRAPHICAL REPRESENTATION OF MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

3D VISUALISATION BY AUTHOR

ACADEMIC : NIT RAIPUR

The Design cum Research thesis aimed at Study of an emerging new style of architecture characterised as parametricism. The Study involved the evolution of the various so called ‘styles’ of architecture that brought about parametricism and using this style to create a museum of contemporary art.

48

Contemporary architecture and urbanism are going through a cycle of innovative adaptation – retooling and adapting the discipline to the demands of the socio-economic era of post-fordism. Parametricism is based on advanced computational design and digital animation techniques to create digital visualisations and designs. Its latest modifications are based on advanced parametric design systems and scripting techniques that create fluid forms.

The glimpses of the design of the Museum of Contemporary art has been shown in the following slides. The study part is not shown here. Parts of the design proces from form finding using parametric tools have been highlighted.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS

Three types of routes connect the bridge from one end to the other. The first is the museum of contemporary art symbolised by green. The second is the road for day to day users symbolised by red. Blue denotes the walways for people who want to stand on the bridge without any kind of motor vehicles plying. There fore basic 3 curves evolve and the curvature is maintained in the x axis as well as the y axis. The pictures avove show the development of the isocurves

The basic form which evolved were doubly curved nurb surfaces. The next stage of development is panelling on the surface. The surface of the museum of contemporery art is panelled and a number of prototypes evolve by change in the grasshopper script. After this stage is the stage of selection of the prototypes. The prototype which is best suited according to the structure and requirement is chosen among all the prototypes. Here the selected prototype has fins raised on it and instead of the sooth curved surface the surface has an element which can regulate sunlight according to the direction. Thus it proves to be a better prototype

The grasshopper script ‘gills geometry that is applied on the surface. Changes in the parameters of this script delivers fast changes on the surface of the doubly curved surface leaving beside a copy of the older one. 49

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS

1. Focus on complex Geometry led to Deconstructivism (technique of texture mapping on warped nurb surfaces) 2. Emergence of Hyper Surface Architecture 3. Scripting and Mapping replaced texture mapping 4. Tessellation of nurb surfaces became an opportunity for articulation 5. This brought along a new type of parametric modeling and scripting to the fore which is evolving as the style of ‘PARAMETRICISM’

The site chosen for the design of the prototype is the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad which runs like a central spine connecting the the old city and the new city. There are a total of eight bridges over the sabarmati river. Construction of two more are in the process. Thousands of people ply these bridges everyday and these bridges are an intrinsic part of their life. The people of Ahmedabad are very nostalgic about their river and development of the riverside has been going on for a long time.

The site selected for the multiuse building is the Sardar bridge. This bridge is situated near the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad which is on its west bank. On the Eastern Bank is a commercial complex and a market place. The area of the site comes under the recreation zone. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Authority want an iconic structure in this area whic is visible from all the other bridges. As the proposed multiuse bridge will house a Museum of Contemporary Art therefore it can totally fulfill the ambitions of the SRFDCL. Moreover its proximity to NID will be of great help to the designers and artists to display their work

50

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS

The areas on the two sides of the bridge are developed as places for recreation. People can come here and play by the river. They can get beautiful views of the river to which they are so attached. Also they can reach levels nearer to the wate by standing on the walkways. The structure will be visible from the other bridges on the sabarmati as people pass by them and will be a centre of attraction for city which can promote tourism further

A central road runs across like a spine joining the two ends of the river through the Museum of contemporary art. Both the sides of the road have display areas. Ramps starting from this level reach the other levels having other display areas and auditoriums. The topmost level has a library and a cafeteria. The road for coday to day users is a tunnel from one end to the other which entwines the MOCA. The MOCA is visible as people ply by this road

The selected prototype which enables almost the same amount of lux inside the building due to the specefic rotation angle of the fins. 51
