here is another gold rush taking place in South Africa, but this time it is for the Aurum development in Bantry Bay, Cape Town. This exceptional development on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean symbolises gold and radiant light, and is being undertaken by global property investment company Da’Realty, part of the 107-year-old, family-owned Darvesh organisation. The building, currently housing the hotel’s executive suites (on the mountain side of Victoria Road) will also evolve into 15 luxurious apartments, capped by a show-stopping fourbedroom penthouse. Ahsan Hassan Darvesh, President of the global conglomerate, bought the hotel after a lengthy stay during which he realised the potential of the spectacular cliff-face site with the Atlantic Ocean undulating below and Lion’s Head gazing down upon it. “Aurum will redefine the concept of limitededition living in South Africa,” said Basil Moraitis”, Atlantic Seaboard area manager of Pam Golding Properties. “Its timeless style and incomparable quality will put it on a par with the very best in New York, Dubai and London.” Orders have been placed with some of the most exclusive international manufacturers to ensure that Aurum is in an uncompromising class of its own. These include Armani, Dadadesigned kitchens, dressing room fixtures and

fittings by Molteni & Co., Gessi sanitaryware, sound and visual systems by Bang & Olufsen and designer appliances by Gaggenau. The group has already built well-established relationships with over 100 famous luxury brands, such as Dior, Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana. These links are based on high-end turnkey projects undertaken by Da’Realty’s subsidiary, Elegant. It designs, manufactures and installs shop fittings for such brands around the world, through its provision of creative, high quality glass and furniturefitting solutions for design and architectural industries. This expertise will be utilised in the Aurum, creating features such as a cascading waterfall on the street-facing facade of each of the two buildings, linking them architecturally and hinting at the luxury within. The reception areas will be adorned with fine glass and crystal chandeliers, and amenities will include a luxury spa, restaurant, 24-hour valet and concierge services, and beautifully landscaped grounds around a feature pool. The secluded location in Bantry Bay lays claim to almost 300 wind-free days a year. Clifton’s world-famous beaches are only a few minutes’ stroll away and easy access to top restaurants, the V&A Waterfront and the city’s financial centre ensures that Aurum will be a sought after investment.

P

hoto Artist Marcin Owczarek compares the initial moment of creation of a new artwork to a voyage. He uses thousands of single photographs, each of which he considers with extreme care before commencing the artistic process. He starts by sketching the image he wishes to generate on a piece of paper; a purely conceptual step. He subsequently turns to the computer to “give birth” to what he wanted to achieve via his sketch, resulting in a collage. The time required for this creation process differs greatly. “The City of Illusion”, for example, took Marcin Owczarek three months to finish, with the artist working on his collages between twelve and fourteen hours each day. At the beginning of his career as an artist, Owczarek used to create traditional collages on paper. Meanwhile, he works exclusively at the computer, as digital collage offers him many more opportunities to articulate his thought processes and perceptions. It also allows him to connect complex elements and reflections and to shape them into a coherent universe. His art consists of photography, painting and traditional collage elements, which he combines with the support of Photoshop. The essence of his art lies in his attempt to create the passage of time, which will remain contemporary in centuries to come. This is the result of past history, his present observations and, finally, his personal prophecies. He believes that each decade of human history is equally important in order to comprehend the entire process. This is why some themes are essentially universal and will recur as long as this world exists. In the final analysis, Marcin Owczarek believes that art is activism; it should demolish walls as opposed to building them up. As an artist, he describes the feelings and places that other people seek to hide from their fellow men, or simply forget.

Indulgent

By using many symbols intentionally, Marcin Owczarek wishes his art to be interpreted at many levels. In his eyes, the collage is the ideal medium to reflect both human virtues and imperfections.

Hendrik Vermeulen was born in 1982 in South Africa. The couture prodigy started sewing at age 6; under the supervision of his mother, a skilled seamstress and talented dressmaker. Selling his first evening dress at age 15, he started to focus all his attention on the fashion industry while attending various related fashion workshops and classes.

I

n 2001 he enrolled in an intensive Haute Couture course and received his diploma in Haute Couture while being presented with the coveted “Student of the Year Award”. After the completion of his studies, Hendrik embarked on his couture journey by working for several reputable couture houses in South Africa. Celebrated designer, Gert van de Merwe, noticed Hendrik’s work and he was invited to join his design house, here Hendrik spent the next few years honing his couture skills as head designer and Cape Town Atelier manager. In 2007 Gert and Hendrik opened a combined couture house in Cape Town, where they were both at service to their own clientele.

Indulgent

Hendrik officially launched his own label, Hendrik Vermeulen Couture, in 2009 while opening a modest Boutique and Atelier in the sought-after suburb of Constantia / Cape Town. He received his first invitation to an international fashion week in 2010 and a Collective of earlier Couture work was showcased at Mozambique Fashion Week. The following year, he became the first South African designer to showcase for two consecutive years at Mozambique Fashion Week, closing the PanAfrican show.

Hendrik Vermeulen’s career spans the most sought-after fashion events on the planet and include the inaugural Perth Fashion week in 2012. After his work caught the eye of AltaRoma’s Vice President, Hendrik showcased at the prestigious Rome Fashion Week in 2014. In 2015 the Hendrik Vermeulen brand was invited to showcase at New York Fashion Week. This gave him the opportunity to explore the field of Prêt-à-Couture, in a collection entitled Smoke and Mirrors. The 2016 Collection, I Am Water, was successively showcased during NYFW at the historic and iconic Vanderbilt Hall, at New York Grand Central Terminal. The show started with a song called Ndingamanzi (I Am Water in Xhosa language) written and composed by Hendrik, which he subsequently recorded with two prominent South African singers. I Am Water 2016 was named one of the top 10, NYFW moments by several publications and online fashion blogs. With this show Hendrik Vermeulen once again made use of the great publicity to cast a spot light on discrimination against minorities. His show not only featured “differently-abled” models, but also included Australian Down Syndrome model, Madeline Stuart. Four collections seamlessly flowing into one breathtaking show held the guests in awe as they witnessed one of Hendrik Vermeulen’s finest moments. A Resort collection comprising of luxury swimwear, silk caftans and soft over gowns, all unique and original with their digital prints, embroideries, hand beading and custom dyed colours. The Prêt-à-Couture collection consisting of lightweight business to cocktail attire. This festival of embossed silk pieces re-embroidered with glass beads and crystals, and custom dyed in water colour shades, adds a new dimension to business and twilight functions. The Bridal Couture collection features designs with a slight departure from traditional styles, while bringing a fresh and “peculiar” approach to this special segment of the “Made to Measure”. A Couture Collection showcasing the Art of the Made to Measure in all its splendour will be interpreted as creatures found at the bottom of our oceans mixed with fantasy sea deities; all showcasing state of the art hand work and details of the highest quality. A few of the processes used in the making of this collection include an array of hand-crafted techniques such as dyeing, beading, sewing, embossing, moulding, 3D printing, embroidery, painting, air brushing, pleating and more.

Indulgent

I Am Water is a collection inspired by the unknown, by what lies beneath the surface. It is a journey that takes you from the sandy shores into the crashing waves. It lures you deeper and deeper into the abyss, where you will discover the magnificent beauty that exists where the sun does not reach, untouched by man. This collection received a standing ovation at The World of Fashion - AltaRoma, and the praises of Barbara Gerdolle Pasquini of Collezioni Magazine.

From a bird’s eye view Dubrovnik has a rose gold appearance. The terracotta roofs that blend with creamy limestone streets and burnished domes; with a long peninsular, jutting into the shimmering turquoise Adriatic, gives this city a unique appearance. by KOBUS WILMANS

he Old Town reveals a thousand stories with its many influences; from Byzantine, Greek, Austrian and Yugoslavian rule, while more recent tragedy is evident in the scattered shrapnel holes of the ancient buildings. In Dubrovnik you will never tire of the harbour views, and walking along the imposing city walls offers panoramic views over the surrounding area, with its pristine beaches, mountains, and the squares and ochre rooftops of the city. Explore the marble streets of the Renaissance city, and it will become clear why Dubrovnik was once hailed as the “Jewel of the

Adriatic”. A charming port, barely large enough for many a luxury yacht awaits one at the foot of the old town, and beyond the old town you will discover a heavenly landscape of beaches, wooded peninsulas and an azure sea strewn with islands. The stylish charm of Dubrovnik is apparent as its unhurried population mix happily with tourists on the magnificent Stradun, a 300m long thoroughfare of gleaming polished stone. The diversity of Dubrovnik restaurants is rather impressive with seafood the most common delicacy. Many Dubrovnik restaurants offer the most popular seafood dishes of octopus salad, squid risotto with black squid ink, and grilled fish. One should not expect a Paris or London dining scene, but compared with the rest of Croatia Dubrovnik offers a taste of different national cuisines. You can choose between Italian, French, Asian, Asian fusion, Bosnian, Mexican, International and Croatian cuisine. This is rather impressive for a small town like Dubrovnik. A very popular seafood restaurant in the old harbour is Lokanda Peskerija . It may offer limited menu, but the food is good and the atmosphere is excellent. Away from the crowds, but within the Orsan Yacht Club on Lapad peninsula, restaurant Orsan is a seafood restaurant with a superb seafront terrace. The food is good, but the restaurant’s main appeal is its exquisite terrace. Restaurant Proto is considered as one of the best seafood restaurants in Dubrovnik, and is located in the old town, just off the main street Stradun. This rare find in the old town is mostly frequented by locals. It’s an elegant restaurant with excellent food, attentive service and a gorgeous first floor terrace. A holiday in Dubrovnik is merely the start, and you will be equally impressed by Split’s waterfront Diocletian Palace where apartments, shops and restaurants are laced through ruins dating back to the 3rd century. Head north and you will find Zagreb with its stylish locals, cafes and museums, along with the Adriatic’s largest peninsula Istria, where Italy’s influence extends to the language, glorious food, and archaeology, including Pula’s Roman amphitheatre.

Among the 18 holes - with mostly small greens - two dominate the sea and the lagoon; one is immersed in the Mediterranean vegetation and another features a water hazard that runs along one side of the green. A refreshing breeze mitigates the temperature and adds an extra challenge to the game, which on this course requires a combination of accuracy and power. Apart from the hotel, you can also invest in your own exclusive oasis of luxury and tranquillity. Argentario Golf Residences offer you a sophisticated home with all the comforts and services of the resort’s 5-star hotel. The resort is ideally located close to Rome, Siena, Pisa and Florence, and is the perfect location for golfers, Italophiles, and beach & spa lovers. The area is also known for the many attractions that appeal to serious foodies and art aficionados.

FINE DINING in THE CITY

84

When it comes to fine dining, Cape Town has long been regarded as the culinary capital of South Africa, with many superior dining options leaving visitors and residents spoilt for choice. KOBUS WILMANS

A

sk any visitor to Cape Town about one of their highlights during their stay, and the answer would inevitably be the choice of restaurants the city offers. Cape Town has established itself on the world stage of awarded restaurants with innovative chefs competing to be the proverbial flavour of the month, and to remain on the winners podium for as long as they are able to. In the last few months a vast array of new restaurants have opened their doors to the delight of food lovers. The competition is fierce to bring something new and unusual to an almost saturated dining circuit, but ardent supporters return to there favourite restaurants time and again. Although the socialites and hipsters of the city frequent any new restaurant to try the fare as soon as they open, others often adopt a wait and see attitude, as many restaurants open just before season starts and then close their doors and leave with the hordes of annual tourists. The restaurants that are still in business after the last ship of the season has sailed, are assured of a stellar following that is difficult to eclipse. Indulgent is thrilled to bring you three unique restaurants that have bewitched locals and will definitely be on our radar for some time. From elegant, fine dining; to casual sophistication; to a new restaurant on the “notorious“ Camps Bay strip.

These three restaurants are perfect for a sophisticated food safari which would include lunch, dinner, and a late night snack while relaxing to the sounds of live music in elegant surroundings.

THE MESS The Rockwell, Napier Street, Green Point

T

he concept of Mess is rooted in the old French Mes - a portion of food, and dating back to the 15th century a group of people who ate together was known as a “Mess”

This stylish and welcoming restaurant and bar in Cape Town’s trendy De Waterkant Village in Green Point, is an elegant establishment where guests can feast on enjoyable food, complemented with discreet but attentive service. This delightful restaurant located in a leafy pedestrian area appeals to all the senses. While the casual sharing of dishes and the eating with your hands may be encouraged, there is nothing careless about their approach to food. The concept may be one of informal unfussy eating, but The Mess still offers a sophisticated night out with globallyinspired dishes, all packing flavour punches. With a menu representing a diverse variety of dishes inspired by flavours from around the world. Good food is meant to be shared and it is evident that owner Carlene de Gouveia and her team love food and love sharing their passion for food. The menu delights with Mezzes, Soft Shell Crabs, and Beef Tataki - a seared angus beef tenderloin with ponzu dressing, served with mooli & cucumber salad; Tuna Ceviche - a symphony of lime cured tuna, coriander & spring onion salad with avocado and ginger; and for something more Mediterranean, try the Crispy Squid Tentacles served with smokey mayo, cucumber and radish. And these are just for starters. The menu offers a good selection of Main Plates and Grill items. For desert addicts such as myself, the small desert selection might tempt you to order more than one as you grapple with the choice of decadent Panna Cotta, sublime Dark Chocolate Lava Cake, or the classic Crème Brulee & Biscotti. Experiencing The Mess, it is evident that this is one of the finest dining experiences Cape Town has to offer. It is a restaurant where guests can experience a laid-back, sophisticated evening of award-winning cuisine.

THE SHORTMARKET CLUB 88 SHORTMARKET STREET

L

uke Dale Roberts of The Test Kitchen fame has partnered in a joint venture with his wife, Sandalene Dale-Roberts, his top chef Wesley Randles and manager Simon Widdison to open The Shortmarket Club in a heritage building just off vibey Bree Street. Guests enter the restaurant from a staircase to the first floor where the open kitchen is the first thing you see. Here the bar area is a perfect place for a pre-dinner drink and to watch the chefs in action. “The restaurant is unique in its design and it’s a place to relax and really lap up the feeling of luxury that surrounds you, and the delicious food of course!” - Luke Dale Roberts Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner and, in keeping with its opulent old-world feel, many of the dishes are modern interpretations of classics. Breakfast heralds a new trend for the City Bowl with the likes of shiitake brioche toast soldiers with boiled eggs, quinoa granola made in-house, and a classic, Arnold Bennett omelette. The menu starts you off with perfect West Coast oysters with Asian accompaniments, or beef carpaccio with a miso-cured egg yolk. The open kitchen also features a braai barbecue section, and you can expect the likes of kingklip with tamarind and palm sugar; or crayfish with smoked sweet corn coming off the grill. Perfect tomahawk steaks, fillet and ribeye from their grill section are perfect for the carnivorous; and stuffed petit poussin are roasted to order and carved at the table, adding flair to the whole dining experience. The opulent Shortmarket Club has been conceptualised and designed by Sandalene, and her vision was a powerful one. She created an uncompromisingly opulent feel, where striking blacks and deep aubergine colours form a suitable backdrop to the moody space with two vast skylights pouring in light. Accents such as stained glass made by local craftsmen in sliding doors from Argentina separating the dining and bar areas have been kept as a nod to the feel of history and craftsmanship the space evokes, while leather-covered tables add to the appeal of this incredible addition to Cape Town’s dining options.

"Our concept behind The 41 is to welcome all Capetonians to Camps Bay. We want the locals to experience our unique food, sublime cocktails, entertainment & events all year round. “ - Gilles Blanc

THE 41 VICTORIA ROAD, CAMPS BAY

T

his summer, Capetonians will welcome an upscale local eatery in Camps Bay with the opening of one of the most exciting dining destinations to grace the city’s restaurant circuit in years. Located along the vibrant “Miami-like” strip of Victoria Road, The 41 restaurant, bar & social hub will definitely be a unique destination for discerning appetites. An inspiration of two Frenchmen, who by a synchronistic turn of fate, arrived in the Cape in August last year and have never left. Gilles Blanc and his partner Nicholas Da Costa are international restaurateurs and the proprietors of The 41, who both achieved very rapid success in the hospitality domain’s of Australia & Asia. They also share a passion for food & connecting with people, and having become accustomed to the dining culture in Cape Town, they instantly saw an opportunity to create a dining experience that caters mostly for the local market. A restaurant that is lively & authentically South African, with a distinct hint of International “pizzazz”. A combination of prime location and understatedly-elegant décor The 41 will have a very broad appeal, whether patrons come straight off the beach for sundowners or visit to dine out on a winters night in front of the fire. The 41 is trendy and chic, and yet very relaxed. The extensive glass-doors tiered dining levels and the minimalist decor offers the 160 diners an unparalleled vista of the Camps Bay scene, inviting them to become completely immersed in its unique energy of the location. In keeping with their exquisite style and business integrity, Blanc & Da Costa recognized the talent of internationally acclaimed Greek chef Aristotle Ragavelas. His sensational food combinations and mastery have delighted many diners across the globe. South African born, Ragavelas has received a number of chefs award in Europe and is thrilled about being part of this dynamo hospitality team. In his words, “We want to offer a real food experience, using the best African products available, to create our special menu that will constantly surprise our diners”. An outstanding menu awaits patrons throughout the day, with items such as designer salads, Crayfish Risotto, and arguably the finest Seafood Platters Cape Town has to offer. This latest addition to the restaurant portfolio of Cape Town will ensure that sundowners in Camps Bay will never be the same again.

Spring in Cape Town is the perfect time for new experiences, and when one is invited to a pairing event that has not been in your frame of reference, one does not miss this event. by KOBUS WILMANS info & images courtesy of Leopold7

O

ver the past decade or so many food and drink pairings have been in vogue, but when I was invited to partake in a beer and cheese tasting, my interest immediately took note. One would normally associate beer with fried snacks and not gourmet cheese. I have to admit that I am not a great beer connoisseur, I much prefer the fruit of the vine; and should I decide to drink a beer, it is most often a very light variety. The beer on offer was a delightful brew presented by Leopold7, and this tasting has converted me into a fan of the hops. This delightfully smoothe, full bodied beer was the perfect drink to savour with the three designer cheeses. For the last century, Leopold7 has been crafting beer in the utmost secrecy, and today it is available in South Africa. As I was told, it is the finest South African brew with a Belgian touch. Leopold7 is not a pilsner and it is not a lager, it is a speciality gourmet beer. It is crafted by brew masters who follow a unique recipe, using only the finest ingredients that are farmed organically or produced locally. The long maturation process develops its amber colour and rich aromas, resulting in an easy, yet robust drinking experience. Leopold 7 is definitely a beer to be savoured. This brewery never compromises on quality, it is 100% natural, and the beer is refermented in the bottle. This results in only natural CO2 being produced, thereby eliminating all the nasty side effects generally associated with beer. When you inspect your beer closely, you will notice a small amount of yeast in every bottle. This brewery is also an eco-brewery. working closely with their staff to minimize the impact on the environment. Yeast, water and cleaning products are recycled, and bottles are label-free to eliminate paper and glue. Heat is also recovered to reduce their energy footprint.

This event was beyond a doubt the perfect ending to a mild pre-spring day in Camps Bay, South Africa. An experience that was made even more perfect by the magnificent sunset, and a view of the pristine beach and calm Atlantic Ocean.

Leopold7 produce only one beer, but unlike many other breweries they do it well, resulting in a beer that appeals to a wide variety of discerning fans.
