New masters of the deep
Editorial: Colin Chinery
In only four years Norwegian-based WeSubsea has reached the front rank in the design and supply of specialised dredges and subsea tools. Now in an increasing spread of high level partnerships, its unique product range is penetrating ever-widening global markets, as CEO Rune Svendsen tells Total World Energy. Subsea is the frontier on the edge of a second gold rush. After several years of slack, capital expenditure on global subsea hardware, according to a current report, is set to grow 80 per cent over the next four years- the perfect backdrop for sector innovators like dredging technology leader WeSubsea.

The dynamic Norwegianheadquartered company supplies specialised dredges and subsea tools. Currently implementing innovative products and services such as video inspection, pressure testing and advanced cleaning, its titanium ROV dredgers, subsea baskets, lifting frames and premium
services have set new standards in performance and customer satisfaction. “Our products are robust and unique, designed to deliver excellent technical solutions, save vessel time, and of course reduce the risk of injury and damage to equipment,” says CEO Rune Svendsen. With headquarters in Kristiansund on the west coast of Norway, with locations in Aberdeen, St. John’s, Canada, Houston and Louisiana in USA, Macaè in Brazil, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, WeSubsea’s dredgers are designed for deep-water dredging, debris seabed materials, rock dump and drill cut removal. Fabricated from titanium, built with minimal moving parts, and operated by divers or ROVs, the dredgers are the most efficient on the market; lightweight, exceptionally robust - and with
WeSubsea no external pump units, easily mounted. “Our dredging, subsea equipment and tooling systems are extremely flexible and can easily be configured to suit project specifications.
CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE “Whether your requirement is for ISO/API standard intervention tools or for a custom project, we deliver products that perform consistently in the world’s most demanding and hostile deepwater deep-waters environments.” WeSubsea is a concept innovator, “not merely renting our products,” says Mr Svendsen, “but also renting our expertise. We have our own workshop, developing either on our own behalf or on behalf of our customers’ needs.” The success of WeSubsea’s
ROV dredger range - developed in cooperation with the Norwegian University of Technology - has
“Norwegian and Scandinavian technology in the oil and gas sector is more and more being preferred around the world, and currently especially in the Gulf of Mexico” encouraged the company to adopt continuous research and development for new equipment, enabling it to remain at the forefront
of the subsea market. WeSubsea uses optimised technology to construct titanium dredgers that require substantially lower pressures and volumes of hydraulic fluids than other ROV dredgers on the market. Small and lightweight, these produce powerful suction and are easily operated by either divers or ROV. Major clients include Technip and Subsea 7. “The biggest entrepreneurs are still our biggest customers but our customer list includes smaller companies based all around the world, and we are on the approval list of most of the major and smaller players.” There are currently half a billion active websites, and in the specialised offshore niche WeSubsea’s is among the best; informative, comprehensive and continuously updated.

“There’s too much competition for you to sit still and wait for a telephone call. If you have products, you have to tell the world. We want our web page to reflect our products, our service level and our attitude. And timing is extremely important in telling the world what you are doing, and in a language that’s understandable” And WeSubsea’s reputation and sales are driven by a further presence; that finest of sales people, an enthusiastic customer. “References, references and references - these are the best things to have. And the constant feedback is that our equipment is faster, more helpful, time-saving and more reliable. “Norwegian and Scandinavian technology in the oil and gas sector is more and more being preferred around the world, and currently especially in the Gulf of Mexico. “We know our products are superior; the next generation. We get constant inquiries from all over the world; ‘where can we get your equipment’?’ is it available in the Middle East, can we get

it in south Asia? To leverage its reputation and success – remarkable in scale for a company only four years
“…our goal is very simple; to be one step ahead within our field of technology and expertise always! ” old – WeSubsea’s growth strategy has a strong focus on top shelf partnerships. “You need a local person with local know how and you need a market.”
GROUNDBREAKING TECHNOLOGY Last December WeSubsea signed
a joint-cooperation agreement with Bergen-based Swire Seabed to develop a ground breaking innovation in seabed intervention technology. Swire provides high quality services for inspection, maintenance and repair and salvage, its subsea excavator interfacing with WeSubsea’s unique dredging technology producing the safest and most powerful system of its kind, deployed from a dedicated launch and recovery system (LARS). With Swire Seabed’s parent company, Swire Pacific Offshore’s network of over 20 offices on five continents, the agreement shows the global reach power and potential of a successful partnership based on complementary products and expertise. Two months ago WeSubsea and Frontier Subsea secured another agreement allowing WeSubsea to deliver its equipment and services to the Canadian market - a harsh operating environment characterised by iceberg prone waters, challenging sea states,
long winters and increasingly deep drilling locations. And last month Aberdeen-based J2 Subsea signed up to represent WeSubsea products in the UK and overseas markets. Almost immediately it was showcasing the new WeSubsea Titanium 3” ROV Dredger at the Subsea Asia event. “WeSubsea’s smaller, lighter, easier to handle dredges require less fluid than existing products and can easily be configured to suit the needs of any project. Our customers can now save valuable time with local access to this high quality technology,” said J2 Subsea Director John Walker. Meantime WeSubsea is looking into other markets such as wind farms. “We have the technology, the dredging, the pile excavating and the know-how. Each platform has four legs, and you are talking about hammering down 80-90 in a single project and then multiply this across the world.
Quality and flexibility For more than 20 years TIGMEK has earned a reputation as a reliable manufacturer of tailor made mechanical solutions for the offshore and onshore industry.

“While the technology to do this is not yet fully developed, we have originated a fairly simple way of doing it. But you need to break the sound barrier, linking up with someone saying, ‘let’s do this; let’s test it with a pilot scheme.’” WeSubsea technology is carefully designed for both quick mobilisation, safe and reliable operation, and with a constant focus on quality and flexibility, says Mr Svendsen. “What we have achieved in four short years is to continually optimise dredging and dredging technology in weight, performance and across the whole range. And our goal is very simple; to be one step ahead within our field of technology and expertise - always!”
