HIDDEN GEMS

WORDS BY REBECCA MATTESON

Stonelick Lake Located in Stonelick State Park in Clermont County, Stonelick is a quiet lake, perfect for kayakers, fishermen and tiny tots who love a beach day. With clean sand and water, the 500foot beach is large enough for toddlers to splash on the banks and bigger kids to swim out to the 20-foot (at its deepest) lake. Stonelick State Park Campground is nestled within the rolling highlands, with over 100 electric and nonelectric campsites and a camp store. Premium lakefront sites cozy right up to the calm lake. The campground hosts several events for families and children throughout the summer, including build your own bat house, kids fishing days, fire safety with Wayne Township Fire and Rescue and Christmas in July. Friends of Stonelick State Park have formed a volunteer conservation group to support the park staff, recreational activities and educational programs. With a goal to raise funds for park projects, Friends of Stonelick have helped install donated playground equipment,

updated docks and kayak launches, completed a brand new disc golf course and provided activities for campers, like the spooky Halloween Campout and ice cream socials. The lake is home to many wildlife species, including bald eagles, herons, wild turkeys, turtles and several varieties of stocked fish. For bird-loving kiddos, it is magical to watch the eagles soaring overhead and dipping into the lake for a quick lunch. With more than 1,000 acres to traverse, the trails at Stonelick mostly rate as easy, including the popular 1.5 mile Red Fox Trail and 3.7 mile Beechtree Lakeview Loop. Trails are well groomed and full of wildflowers and fungi to study. Stonelick State Park is a gem for a relaxing day on a quiet lake. With leashed pups permitted, Stonelick State Park, lake and campground is a fun way to enjoy a summer day with the whole family.

AROUND TOWN

WORDS BY PAM FREEMAN

Local Spotlight: We Care Arts

This nonprofit is on a mission to empower and heal through art and community. What other programs do you offer?

We Care Arts believes in the healing power of art that transforms physical, developmental and mental challenges into a future rich with possibilities. Southwest Ohio Parent spoke to Darlene Nelson, executive director of We Care Arts, to learn more about this organization that serves the greater Dayton area.

We work in eight different school districts with Transition to Work programming in high school. This program is specific to students with disabilities working to achieve employment skills. Art Cafe is a drop-in, weekly art class held at our Wilmington Pike Berkeley Center, where youth with disabilities have a safe environment to learn art skills and practice being social.

How did We Care Arts get started? We Care Arts began in 1983 by Terry Schalnat and the Lutheran Social Services. At the time, the focus was to help out-of-work adults achieve additional employment skills to gain employment. Since then, We Care Arts has worked to develop job, life and social skills through art specifically for individuals with mental health diagnoses and both physical and developmental disabilities.

Tell us about your work with seniors, including your adult day care program. Who participates and how do they benefit? Our program serves individuals ages 4-104! We hold this program at our studios on Wilmington Pike in Kettering. In addition, we hold programming at many nursing homes, senior centers, memory units and rehabilitation facilities. Seniors participate in fine arts

12

ohParent.com I June 2022

programming led by professional artists in our Dayton region. While seniors are our primary reason for this programming, often visiting family members also participate in programming with their loved ones.

Tell us about your work with cancer patients through Miami Valley and Kettering Medical Center. One of our many off-site programming locations includes the major hospital networks in Dayton. We have professional artists visit cancer treatment facilities to help patients create artwork while receiving their treatments. Cancer treatments are routine but frequently leave sick family members alone during this process because of work, and family responsibilities with children needing to take place.

Our artists provide an artistic experience, but more importantly give empathy and friendship during a difficult hurdle in life.

Our Employment Services program employs individuals with disabilities to learn and practice employment skills, preparing them for future jobs in the community.

How can people help We Care Arts? We always accept monetary donations in support of our programming. We also accept donations of art supplies for our teachers and artists to use. We always need volunteers to help with programming and many other aspects of our organization. More information on these opportunities can be found on our website at wecarearts.org.

Queen City Cotton Candy Move over, traditional cotton-candy-on-a-stick vendors! Queen City Cotton Candy has elevated all of our tasty cotton candy dreams. With cotton candy cupcakes, cakes, customizable favors and a rentable mobile cotton candy cart, Queen City Cotton Candy has pulled out all the stops for a nontraditional party treat. Made with no cake at all, cotton candy cakes might be our favorite trend of 2022. A creative way to avoid dietary restrictions of gluten and dairy, what kiddo doesn’t love biting into a fluffy, flavorful sugary snack? Although beautifully aesthetic, cotton candy cakes do not do well in heat and are reserved for cooler months. Queen City Cotton Candy can be found all over Cincinnati, including Newport on the Levee through July 14. Follow along on Instagram (@ queencitycottoncandy) for updates on pop-up locations, including at the OFF Market and City Flea.

Not just for the kiddos, adults can reserve the mobile cart for work events, bridal parties, baby showers and every other event that could use a colorful, tasty treat. Mobile cart rentals include one hour of freshly made cotton candy in flavors like birthday cake, grape, lime, blue raspberry and others. Skip the traditional party favors and customize a perfectly quaint cotton candy push pop or sparkle bomb. Wow guests with cotton candy sparkle bombs, a fluffy ball of sugary goodness filled with edible sparkles inside, a perfect addition to a glass of bubbly or Sprite. Shopping small with Queen City Cotton Candy comes with big flavors and bright fluff. Whether you’re customizing push pops or stopping by the market cart for some fresh spins, one bite into the Queen City’s own cotton candy will make your heart happy and your taste buds absolutely delighted. queencitycottoncandy.com

PARENTING

WORDS BY AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION

The Long-Lasting Benefits of Camp Camp has been providing special memories of hiking, swimming, friendships and adventure for generations. When children go to camp, they’ll likely come home gushing about the lifelong friends they’ve made and the exciting adventures they had. What they probably won’t tell you about are the life lessons camp has given them — those skills that will translate into a lasting selfconfidence, an awareness of the importance of kindness, and a greater comfort in voicing their opinions. They agreed that: Camp is full of fun and excitement, but it is so much more. Camp provides children with the skills needed for a successful future, such as independence, empathy, the ability to work as part of a team, and a broader world view. The American Camp Association’s large-scale national study talked to 18- to 25-year-olds who attended camp as kids. They were asked what they experienced at camp that broadened their perspective and helped them in school and in their early careers.

Camp is a safe and nurturing environment that enhances independence. Camp gives children the guidance and freedom to explore activities, make new friends, and learn by doing. Camp encourages effort and perseverance. Inspiring success is fundamental to camp and former campers attest that camp helped them become self-reliant and confident. Camp is a community that celebrates self-esteem, resilience and dependability.

Camp teaches kids to live in the moment. Seizing each moment — each experience — is the heart of camp. Former campers confirm that their time at camp was spontaneous, unrehearsed, and relaxed. They

14

ohParent.com I June 2022

didn’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. This ability to live in the moment has helped them in their education, careers and lives.

Camp is a community that celebrates diversity. Diversity is the essence of the camp. Campers meet new people and learn to appreciate differences — to respect and value everyone’s uniqueness. Former campers confirm that their lives have been expanded by those of different cultures, ethnicity, faiths and ideas. Camp provided a broader perspective for their adult lives.

Camp builds and develops relationships. At camp, campers learn how to meet new people, work together, and carry on important and sometimes difficult

conversations. They learn to make valuable connections with others. Former campers attest to the importance of these relationship skills in their success in higher education, the workplace and life.

“Our research shows that campers have the opportunity to gain new experiences and learn new, life-long skills,” says Tom Rosenberg, ACA president and CEO. “The impact of camp lasts forever.”
