PRESSING ISSUES FOR THE COLTS THIS SEASON By Mike Chappell

mike.chappell@indystar.com

The Indianapolis Colts head into another summer at Anderson University, their third straight since a relocation from Terre Haute’s Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. But it’s unlike any before it. There’s no Peyton Manning. The longtime franchise cornerstone was released in March and is “camping” with the Denver Broncos. Now, all eyes focus on rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. So many familiar faces have scattered after being released or not re-signed: center Jeff Saturday, linebacker Gary Brackett, tight end Dallas Clark, running back Joseph Addai. Ryan Grigson is in his first year as general manager, Chuck Pagano his first as a head coach. Yet one thing remains constant: issues, critical ones for a franchise attempting to rebound from last year’s 2-14 finish. Here’s a look at a six-pack of pressing issues that must be addressed during the 21-day stay in Madison County that includes 15 practices open to the public:

Throw Luck into the deep end of the pool

Grigson used the first overall pick in the April draft to bring Manning’s successor to the roster. This is Luck’s time, his team. The Colts need to handle Luck in the manner they did Manning in 1998. Manning took the vast majority of the repetitions with the first unit during his rookie training camp and played extensively in the four preseason games. The best experience is playing. After missing extensive time during the offseason due to his academic responsibilities at Stanford, Luck will be playing catch-up as far as developing the necessary rapport with a receiving cast that includes veterans Reggie Wayne, Austin Collie and Donnie Avery and rookies Coby Fleener, Dwayne Allen, T.Y. Hilton and LaVon Brazill. » See Issues, Page T6

The focus of the Colts becomes quarterback Andrew Luck, who was the first overall pick in April’s draft. MATT DETRICH / THE STAR

Issues

Anthony Castonzo, blocking during last year’s training camp, is almost certainly the starting left tackle this year. He’s in his second season after being a first-round draft pick in 2011.

Continued from T4

Settle on an offensive line and allow it to develop

The only clear holdover from last season seems to be Anthony Castonzo. Last year’s first-round pick is the left tackle and charged with protecting Luck’s blindside. New faces could reside at the other four spots: Samson Satele at center, Mike McGlynn at right guard, Winston Justice at right tackle and Ben Ijalana at left guard, if he’s able to wrestle it away from incumbent Joe Reitz. Ijalana also figures to be the swing tackle, backing up Castonzo and Justice. If Luck and the offense are to progress and move the ball, the O-line must hold up its end. Poor quarterbacking was a large part of last season’s ineffective offensive production (15.2 points per game), but the 35 sacks and heavy pressure contributed. It was the most sacks allowed since 1997 (62).

Calling all corners

JOE VITTI / THE STAR

In case you haven’t noticed, the NFL is a passing league. Three quarterbacks surpassed the 5,000-yard mark in 2011, led by New Orleans’ Drew Brees and his record 5,476. In the previous 91 seasons, only twice did a QB top 5,000 yards. Nowadays, having a pair of quality cornerback starters isn’t enough. Defensive coordinators frequently are relying on nickel (three cornerbacks) and dime (four) formations. The Colts have one established corner: Jerraud Powers. After that, it’s a collection of unproven talent. Several players must ratchet up their game. Kevin Thomas, a 2010 third-round pick, worked as Powers’ sidekick during the offseason. The second starting job apparently is his to lose. He will be pressed by 2011 sixth-round pick Chris Rucker, Terrence Johnson and Cassius Vaughn, a promising third-year player who was acquired in a trade with Denver.

Accelerate the defensive transition to the hybrid 3-4

The Colts no longer will frustrate their fans by using a passive 4-3 (four down linemen, three linebackers). Pagano and defensive coordinator Greg Manusky will oversee an attacking 3-4 group. End Cory Redding, nose tackle Brandon McKinney and safety Tom Zbikowski, all free agent acquisitions, are familiar with the approach. All played for Pagano in Baltimore last season. But it’s a brave, new world for virtually every other player on that side of the line of scrimmage. That includes Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis, perennial Pro Bowl ends who now are standing up as outside linebackers. Manusky will maximize the

6

pass-rush skills of Freeney and Mathis, but they’ll still have to adapt.

Align the crowded backfield

Pagano made two things crystal clear during the offseason. One, the Colts are going to be a power running team. Two, Donald Brown is the presumptive leader. A more reliable running attack will ease the load on Luck and a defense in transition. That area has been wholly unreliable. Since 2008, the Colts rank No. 32 in the league in rushing yards per game (88.2) and per attempt (3.7) and No. 31 in attempts per game (23.6). That won’t get it done. Brown needs to stay healthy and be consistent. He rushed for 645 yards and averaged 4.8 per carry last year, both career highs. Brown should be pushed by 238-pound Delone Carter and 217-pound rookie Vick Ballard, both of whom appear ideal for the bruising approach. Free agent pick-up Mewelde Moore is a candidate to be a third-down option.

Make special teams special

ROB GOEBEL / THE STAR

Donald Brown is the likely starter at running back. The Colts hope he can handle a lot of carries.

Punting and kickoffs? No problem with Pat McAfee. Place-kicking? In the capable hands of Adam Vinatieri. After that? Anybody’s guess. It’s new special teams coordinator Marwan Maalouf’s charge to tighten coverage and find an explosive return man, or two. In 2011, the Colts ranked No. 32 in kickoff returns, punt returns and covering kickoffs, a terrible trifecta. They ranked last in the league in starting field position after a kickoff. Return candidates include Hilton, Brazill, Vaughn, Moore, Jabin Sambrano and Quan Cosby. ✭ Call Star reporter Mike Chappell at (317) 444-6830.

ANDERSON, Ind. — It’s time again for some intense NFL preparation and probably a whole lot of perspiration. Get ready to sweat, not just new quarterback Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts but fans who will watch their favorite players toil in the extreme heat of training camp at Anderson University. The first of 16 practice days is today. The team will break camp after a morning workout Aug. 17. The team and university remind fans to stay hydrated and be prepared for possible 100-degree heat. There will be misting fans, water fountains and first-aid stations, but it helps to drink fluids beforehand. Last year, an estimated 76,000 people visited the Christian college to see the Colts, which translated to a $6 million economic boost. The year before, the Colts’ first season back at Anderson after 11 years at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., the camp drew 85,000 and pumped about $6.5 million into local businesses. “We’re just thrilled to be in our third consecutive year,” said Chris Williams, university director of communications and community relations. Camp practices are free. For those in need of directions, take I-69 from Indianapolis to exit 26. Take Ind. 9/Scatterfield Road to Fifth Street or University Boulevard. Be advised some campus

streets are closed, so stay on the main path. Here are a few hints to help visitors enjoy the experience.

What’s new?

Besides an overhauled roster, there are a few wrinkles to take note of when planning a visit: » The Colts’ morning walkthrough practices will not be open to the public. They advise the switch is a result of last year’s new collective bargaining agreement. So seeing two practices in one day, as has been the case for years, is a thing of the past. » The offense/defense practice will be at 2:20 p.m. most days, the exception being night practices at Macholtz Stadium at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 and Aug. 16, then the final workout on Aug. 17 at 9:45 a.m. » The Colts won’t practice on the first two Wednesdays, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8. » There won’t be an autograph tent. No more fans showing up at 5 a.m. to get in line and not watch a snap of practice. But players will be informed that signing autographs after public practices is a priority. » If the Fifth Street/University Boulevard parking lot is full, overflow parking is available for the first time at the Anderson Municipal Airport on Ind. 32. Free shuttle service will be provided. For more information, call (765) 648-6292 or (765) 639-4611 or click: http:// » See Guide, Page T10

Where’s the info?

For a Colts camp map and to check out other details, see the AU Web site, www.Anderson.edu/Colts. Photos, videos and updates will be available at www.Facebook.com/blueatau. The Colts are encouraging fans to share their experiences on Twitter with the hashtag #coltscamp. Camp practice fields are around the Kardatzke Wellness Center, behind the tennis courts next to Macholtz Stadium. Plan to walk 510 minutes from the parking lot. The only shuttle service from the main parking lot will be on golf carts for fans parking in handicapped areas with mobility challenges. Wheelchairs must be collapsed to be transported on the golf cart. Parents and/or family members are expected to keep children 12-andunder with them at all times.

Colts City is back

The popular fan attraction is returning, which means inflatables, a rock climbing wall, Play 60 Zone, sponsor booths, giveaways and register-to-win ticket chances, Colts In

Motion traveling museum, a Colts Pro Shop tent, cheerleader autograph sessions and appearances by Blue, the team’s mascot. Two concerts have been planned to precede the night practices. The Jai Baker Band will play from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 7, with a fireworks show after practice. Former Colts punter Hunter Smith and his band will perform Aug. 16 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Parking fee

The charge of $10 per car or $20 per vehicle with 15 people or more is unchanged. The parking lot is to be entered from Fifth Street.

A few rules

Video cameras, flash photography and use of a laptop during practice are not permitted. Security typically gives a warning. Personal coolers are not permitted in the stadium area. If fans keep coolers in their vehicles, remember the university is an alcohol-free, smoke-free campus. The only permissible animals are service pets. No bicycles are allowed at camp. Bicycle racks can be found on University Boulevard.

Let’s eat

One of the more popular stops is Gene’s Hot Dogs on Seventh Street. Think you’ve seen every type of hot

dog? Check out Gene’s. And don’t forget a root beer. The Lemon Drop, a 1950s diner on Mounds Road, is known for onion burgers. Those wanting soft-serve ice cream can check out Frazier’s Dairy Maid on Main Street. Pecan caramel sundaes are popular. Texas Roadhouse on Scatterfield Road attracts a lot of Colts fans. Can’t miss it off the main road. Other suggestions include the Real Hacienda Mexican restaurant on Meridian Street, Greek’s Pizzeria on University Boulevard, Frisch’s Big Boy on Broadway Street, The Toast Cafe´ on East 13th Street and Eva’s Pancake House on Broadway Street.

FYI

» Lost-and-found items should be turned in to and can be recovered at the information booth/gazebo near the camp entrance. If items are dropped from the bleachers, retrieval is done daily after practice. Fans must complete a form with a description and contact information to request a search for a lost item. » There aren’t any ATMs. Some vendors accept debit/credit cards, but some don’t. Fans should be prepared to pay in cash. ✭ Call Star reporter Phillip B. Wilson at (317) 444-6642. Follow him at twitter.com/indystar_pwilson24
