An extensive menu of Greek food, 12 performances by Hellenic dance troupes and live music from Kosta and the Wave are part of the annual Indy Greek Festival. This year’s tours of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will include views of the iconostasis, a hand-carved oak partition installed near the altar last December. The iconostasis is 43 feet wide and stands 16 feet at its highest arch.

“Color Me ______”

It’s up to iMOCA attendees to fill in the blanks in this collaborative exhibition by artists Andy J. Miller and Andrew Neyer. Columbus, Ind., resident Miller and Cincinnati-based Neyer are creating three 16-foot murals — as well as 5-foot markers to be used in the communal coloring exercise. Miller’s illustrations have been featured in the “46 for XLVI” mural project as well as 2009’s “Indie Rock Coloring Book.” Andy J. Miller’s illustration appeared in 2009’s “The Indie Rock Coloring Book.” Miller and Andrew Neyer will collaborate on an iMOCA exhibit.

Choreographer Amalia Hernandez, who died in 2000, brought her first dance troupe to the United States in 1958. More than 100 international tours have followed for her Ballet Folklorico de Mexico, known for female dancers in colorful skirts and male dancers in masks and sombreros. The show spotlights various geographic regions of Mexico and 1,000 years of cultural history.

This London-born son of Ugandan refugees was selected as the “Sound of 2012” in a BBC survey of music experts, and he’s toured as the supporting act for Adele. Kiwanuka, a singersongwriter frequently compared to Bill Withers and Van Morrison, is on the road as a headlining act to promote debut album “Home Again.” He performed earlier this month at Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival.

Shrine Exhibition
When: Oct. 5-Nov. 25. Where: Indianapolis Art Center, 820 E. 67th St. Tickets & info: Free; www.indplsartcenter.org. Annually, around Day of the Dead celebrations, the Indianapolis Art Center asks people to create shrines about pretty much anything their makers want to remember or honor. The result is an exhibition of dozens of folk art shrines, created by artists with and without formal training. The IAC’s other Day of the Dead events have shifted to the Indiana State Museum and the Eiteljorg.
St. Joan of Arc French Market Festival
When: Noon to 10 p.m. Sept. 8. Where: St. Joan of Arc Church, 4217 Central Ave. Tickets & info: Free; www.sjoa.org. Oui, the music at this festival is good; plus there’s a children’s play area and some cute vendors. But the real draw is the eats and the fact that you can wash them down with a bottle of bubbly. Food and beverage tickets ($1 each) buy such delights as escargot en croute ($5), a plate of bread, cheese, fruit and pate ($7) or oysters Rockefeller ($4). So, let the champagne flow ($20) and call a cab!

The annual home-grown rock ’n’ roll fundraiser is one of my favorite events. I love to rock, especially with Indianapolis’ uber-talented local musicians. This year, bands will cover Stevie Wonder, U2 and The Kinks, and everyone — even youngsters — can participate. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season, and it benefits Second Helpings, a nonprofit community kitchen and food pantry.

Floating lanterns will serve as beacons for ancestral spirits.

The former Black Flag and Rollins Band front man can be schticky, but his curiosity and inability to sit still provide a stream of funny and provocative insights.

A chrome Streamline Moderne 1954 diner in Plainfield. A repurposed round barn in Fulton County (self-proclaimed round barn capital of the world). I’m keen to hear how Indiana landmarks like these are turned into poetic vernacular by JL Kato, Tom Orr, Alessandra Lynch, Shari Wagner, Mitchell Douglas and about 15 other poets. They’ll read their compositions in a multimedia performance at another Hoosier landmark: the restored 1891 Central Avenue Methodist church, now home to Indiana Landmarks, the state’s preservation watchdog.
Visual art “Anna T.: Balloons”

Discovering this tiny exhibition space was like finding the prize in a Crackerjack box. Now imagine the room filled with an art installation of helium-filled balloons — touching encouraged. That’s what SpaceCamp has in store when its curators bring Anna T.’s show to Indy. Based in Berlin, Anna T. is a young artist in new media who incorporates elements of pop culture in her photography, videos and installations. It’s her first solo art show in the U.S. In “Balloons,” she questions the preoccupation and assumptions about gender definitions and identity. Easiest way to find the gallery is to enter from the Virginia Avenue door next to La Margarita restaurant and go upstairs.

I know why I’m attracted to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros: They’re a throwback to the look and sound of my “formative years,” a time shaped by the Summer of Love, Woodstock, Jimi and Janis and the original Broadway musical “Hair.” With charismatic lead singer Alex Ebert twirling and hooting and clapping in rhythm, this gypsy caravan of a rock band is making a rare Indianapolis appearance. Everyone will be on their feet, dancing and swaying to the flow of peace, love and harmony.
When: 6 to 9 or 10 p.m. Sept. 7. Where: More than 30 participating galleries and studios near Downtown and Fountain Square. Tickets & info: Free; www.idada.org. First Friday is a year-round, monthly festival of art appreciation, but I look forward to September when the evenings are cooler. An intriguing event at the Harrison Center for the Arts is the “We Are City,” an initiative to support ideas for better city living. In the gym, 25 local organizations, such as Big Car and IndyHub, will share information on ways to be involved. In the City Gallery, artist boards will show what the commissioned art will look like when Eskenazi Hospital opens in December 2013. Next, I’ll head to Gallery 924 on Pennsylvania Street, for Michal Lile’s “Transitions & Possibilities.” One installation uses blue painters’ tape to create an out-of-gallery experience that will ultimately lead to the next-door Living Room Lounge. Then I’ll hit Wug Laku’s Studio & Garage to check out his digital imagery of the patterns of the natural world in a show called “Repeat.”

The House That Jack Built

Last year, IRT-playwright-in-residence James Still gave us a portrait of author/chef James Beard. In October, it’s “The House That Jack Built,” about a Thanksgiving family gathering. “As a writer I wanted to dig into long, loving relationships and how they can be complicated by both comfort and liability . . . how hard it can be to make changes in your life when people are depending on you to stay exactly the way they want or need you to be,” Still said. Directed by Janet Allen, “The House That Jack Built” is a world premiere.

Born in Dublin and now living in London, Clare Murphy specializes in the strange folktales of her homeland. Shape-shifting creatures, episodes of betrayal and battle, the origin of fairies and the agonies and triumphs of heroes are part of the Irish heritage she celebrates in her physical, spellbinding act.

Visual art Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture

You may have a vague idea that figurative art is not permitted in Islamic cultures. The prohibition applies to mosques, but not generally to societies dominated by Islam. That’s just one misconception that could be cleared up as you PROVIDED BY IMA enjoy this show, which contains manuscripts, scrolls, textiles, ceramics and wood carvings, among other works from around the Muslim world. More than 250 objects, representing different levels of society, are on display in an exhibition that originated at Brigham Young University in Utah. From Indianapolis, the exhibit will travel to museums in Newark, N.J., and Portland, Ore.

John Nelson was always inspiring when he stood on the podium of the Circle Theatre (the name didn’t begin with “Hilbert” at the time) and conducted a big work for chorus and orchestra. The spiritually oriented music director, the orchestra’s fourth since its founding in 1930, was at the helm for 10 seasons until now-conductor laureate Raymond Leppard succeeded him in 1987. With the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir and soloists, Nelson returns to lead the massed forces in Brahms’ “German Requiem,” one of the masterworks in the repertoire so dear to Nelson’s heart. The performances will no doubt stir many hearts.

Several movies will have their world premieres. Franklin resident Bill Dever founded the festival six years ago for reasons beyond camp and kitsch. “There’s a social construct behind all the goofy dinosaurs or the monsters that come out of the sea,” he told The Star last year. “They’re really trying to give a social message.”

Turns out, these newcomers have been sent to Earth to study humans’ food, sex, moral and mental habits. Full disclosure: I have never been to a TOTS production. But the provocative, witty posters in their window frequently stop me in my tracks on Massachusetts Avenue.

Penrod, one of the largest single-day art fairs, features the work of more than 300 visual artists on the beautiful, serene grounds of the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
