Circle of Lights® presented by Quality Connection and IBEW #481:

“Monumental” effort by Quality Connection Contractors and IBEW #481 Electrical Workers benefits all

A must-see holiday tradition

The joy of the season comes to life on Monument Circle each Thanksgiving weekend as 100,000 spectators brave the cold and embrace the energy of each other and 4,784 colored lights, 52 garland strands, 52 larger-than-life decorations and one exciting event.

Now in its 51st year, the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 has become a must-see holiday tradition! This year’s event will take place on Nov. 29, 2013. “The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 are thrilled to be the presenting partners of Circle of Lights,” said Sean Seyferth, IBEW #481 business manager. “The tradition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the standards and craft of the union electrical construction industry along with our community commitment. We invite all Hoosiers to kick off their holiday celebration with us!” Travelocity Each year, generations of families are drawn to this beautiful named Circle centerpiece in the cultural and geographical center of the city and state. The Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument will again play of Lights® one host to more than 100,000 spectators expected for the FREE Circle of the top of Lights® ceremonial lighting and holiday kickoff on Nov. 29. Entertainers chosen from statewide auditions will share the stage five “mustIndianapolis native Sandi Patty and The von Trapp Family see Christmas with Singers, both appearing at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s trees” in the Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with the televised show running from 7 – 8 p.m. The Monument light-up nation. will occur at approximately 7:45 p.m. “Circle of Lights is such a treasured central Indiana celebration,” said Julia Saltsgaver, Quality Connection executive director. “The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 are pleased to share this gift with our community each year.” And who gets to “flip the switch?” Each year, a lucky child is chosen from a coloring contest to help Santa and the Mayor illuminate the night. The stage on which they and the entertainers appear features a Santa’s Workshop theme complete with toy soldiers and sailors, peppermint sticks, ornaments, elves in the workshop and an abundance of toys. Millions of sightseers will take in this brilliant spectacle throughout the holiday season, lit through Jan. 11. The decoration of Monument Circle is one of Central Indiana’s favorite holiday traditions! Travelocity named the Circle of Lights® one of the top five “must-see Christmas trees” in the nation. Circle of Lights® is an official program of Indianapolis Downtown, Inc., which develops, manages and markets Downtown as a great place to live, learn, work and play. Visit www. indydt.com for more information. ✶

“The Circle of Lights kicks off my favorite time of year — the holiday season. This event really represents Indianapolis: families gathering at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a monument honoring Local veterans, a symbol of the city and the state. To see all the people — young and old, celebrity different religions and races — coming holiday to Circle of Lights to sing and celebrate traditions together is special.” Winnie Ballard, First Lady of Indianapolis

Once again, Monument Circle has been transformed into a shining display of holiday decor with 4,784 festive lights ready for all to enjoy throughout the season. But how does this happen and who do we have to thank for making this wonderful tradition a reality each year? For now the 51st year in a row, dedicated union electricians from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #481 have gathered at the foot of Monument Circle to join together as volunteers. More than 200 men and women carefully and skillfully installed the lights and garland that make the iconic centerpiece for the Circle of Lights®. Many organizations and individuals have played a part to design, install and implement the Circle of Lights® decor and celebration each year since. However, only one organization has taken part each and every year since 1962. IBEW #481 was first the labor crew for the electrical contractor “They commit who managed the initial development and their talent then became the labor leader that maintains, and time to stores, installs and removes the decor annually. transform “Thanks to the countless IBEW #481 Downtown electricians and Quality Connection Indianapolis contractors who assist us each year,” said Sherry Seiwert, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. into a magical, president. “They commit their talent and holiday time to transform Downtown Indianapolis wonderland.” into a magical, holiday wonderland. So to them, we say ‘thanks and job well done.’“ Initially, a group known as the Indianapolis Christmas Committee and later named Indianapolis Holidays Committee was joined by the Indianapolis Merchants Association. The goal was to establish a holiday symbol of peace, yet protect the mission, structure and integrity of the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument. In 1994 the responsibility transitioned from the Indianapolis Holidays Committee to Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. Then, in 2004, IBEW #481 and its labor-management partnership, The Quality Connection, expanded their role to become the presenting partners of Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481. Quality Connection is a labor management partnership that represents more than 100 union electrical contractors and more than 3,000 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481 electrical workers. Together labor and management provide the needed expertise, highly trained workforce, safety and dedication to help build many of Central Indiana’s premiere education, health care, utility and logistics projects. The unique business relationship spans more than 50 years and represents a strong tradition of quality electrical construction, progressive labor negotiations and community service. about the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Circle of Lights® presented by Quality Connection and IBEW #481 1.

Standing 284 feet, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is just 21 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty.

2.

The monument is the largest in the nation dedicated to the common soldier.

3.

The 38-foot tall bronze figure atop the statue is named Victory, but Hoosiers also call her Miss Indiana. She faces south to welcome soldiers returning from battle. During the summer of 2011, Victory was removed for the first time in 118 years for repairs then put back in place that September.

4.

The stone sculptures were the work of Rudolf Schwarz, an Austrian sculptor. The soldiers initially had full beards, but were thought to look “too German” so Schwarz chipped away at the limestone to shave the beards.

5.

The monument took nearly 12 years to construct and is made of Indiana limestone from Terre Haute Stone Co. quarries.

6.

Building costs at the turn of the 20th

century totaled $598,318. Building a similar structure today would cost more than $500 million.

7.

The groups of statues on the monument’s east face represent War and The Dying Soldier; Peace and The Return Home are on the west face.

8.

The four statues at the corners of the monument represent different methods of military warfare: infantry, cavalry, artillery and navy.

9.

Within the monument’s cornerstone is a large box containing, among other things, a list of all the soldiers from Indiana who fought for the Union, a photograph of the monument’s German architect, Bruno Schmitz, and a Civil War-era battle flag.

10. Every holiday season, the Monument is transformed into a spectacular centerpiece. The Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 celebrates its 51st anniversary this year. The free

event is Friday, Nov. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monument Circle.

11. Surrounding the Circle are 26 larger-

than-life toy soldiers and sailors (12 feet tall) and 26 peppermint sticks (10 feet tall).

12. There are 52 garland strands with

4,784 colored lights strung from the top of the monument to its base. Each bulb color represents a branch of the US military: Army – green; Air Force – clear; Navy – blue; Coast Guard – yellow; Marines – red.

13. More than six miles of electrical wire

and two miles of garland are used for the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481.

14. The lights will be turned on the day

after Thanksgiving and remain lit until Jan. 11, allowing nearly two months to take in this beloved holiday tradition.

We manage the Soldiers and Sailors Monument which during the holiday season serves as the epicenter for the Circle of Lights. The best part is on the evening we light the tree and watching the faces of those in attendance, especially the children. At that point in time your social or economic status does not matter, we are all one family with anticipation of celebrating the holiday with best wishes for the new year.”

General Stewart Goodwin, Executive Director of the Indiana War Memorials Commission

“The holiday season is a time filled with memories and reunions. For me, the holiday season in Indianapolis is seeing the Indianapolis Repertory Theater’s classic “A Christmas Carol.” The play reminds us to look to our past to what we have done, to our present to remind ourselves that what we do affects others and especially to our future, that we all have the capacity to make a positive difference in others’ lives.” Dr. Charles Bantz, IUPUI Chancellor

The legend of the Cherub continues

It was 1946. World War II had just ended and thousands returned home from military service. Among them, Virginia Holmes — a prize-winning commercial artist — came back to Indianapolis and started her career in the advertising department at L.S. Ayres, a downtown department store. When it came time to compose the 1946 holiday catalog, merchandise was still in short supply, so Holmes created whimsical cherubs to fill the somewhat empty pages. Customer response was so great that Ayres perpetuated their appearance in its 1947 holiday advertising. It also was the store’s 75th anniversary, and that called for a special addition to the holiday celebration plans. Ayres commissioned David Rubin, a nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor and Herron School of Art instructor, to create a bronze cherub for the store’s landmark clock, located on the building at the corner of Washington and Meridian streets.

Cherub keeps watch As the story is told, the whimsical Cherub mysteriously appeared atop the clock on Thanksgiving Eve 1947 to keep a watchful eye on holiday shoppers until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. This started a powerful tradition that lives in the hearts, minds and memories of the city and its grateful citizens. In the 66 years since, thousands have had the pleasure of seeing the Cherub overhead each holiday season. The May Department Store Co. purchased L.S. Ayres in 1986, and in 1992 it moved the Cherub to its headquarters in St. Louis. There was tremendous public outcry when the Cherub didn’t appear that holiday season. In response, May donated the Cherub to the City of Indianapolis and in 1994 Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. became the Cherub’s legal guardian. So keep an eye out. The Cherub will be appearing Downtown very soon. ✶

Giving thanks, giving back By Julie Young For Custom Publications

Charitable giving traditionally reaches its peak during the holidays.

Feed their hunger with

100% of your gi5, plus the match

will go directly to Central Indiana agencies.

Hungry bodies make it difficult for hungry minds to learn. And sometimes, a healthy option is hard to find. Help us grow strong kids and create bright futures with a donation to Season for Sharing. We’ll donate 50 cents for every dollar of your giB. 100% goes to support programs that fill their tummies, their minds and their spirits.

Help us continue to give the gi1 of hope.

A campaign to benefit Our Children Our City

Season for Sharing is a donor-advised fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation.

Go to indystar.com/sfs to donate.

While a cynic might point to the tax deductions of such donations, that incentive is minor compared with the emotional rewards Hoosiers receive when they give back to their community. Central Indiana nonprofits rely on the time and talent of volunteers and donors all year long, but especially at year end. Every organization on a mission to care for the homeless, champion local artists or support groundbreaking scientific research welcomes donations from small to large.

Mindful giving With so many organizations in need, you may be challenged to decide where to direct your discretionary funds. Myrta Pulliam, director of special projects for Star Media, said many people support the causes they connect with, while others put their money where they believe it will do the most good. Anyone can use Pulliam the Make a Difference Day website, www.makeadifferenceday.com, to find a community organization to match their talents and interests. “If one wants to feed the hungry or clothe the needy, he or she may connect with Wheeler Mission, Gleaners Food Bank, Second Helpings, Goodwill or the Salvation Army, who will be grateful for donations of money and manpower,” Pulliam said. To support several agencies at once, check into the Season for Sharing fund. This annual campaign raises money specifically to improve education in Indiana by supporting quality child care, preschool programs, good nutrition and adult literacy programs. Season for Sharing’s focus on education aligns with the “Our Children, Our City” campaign begun by The Indianapolis Star in 2010, Pulliam said. “Every dime raised goes back into the

Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign

community through grants to organizations such as College Mentors for Kids, Day Nursery, The Julian Center and more,” she noted. “Season for Sharing has done due diligence to ensure that all money is being channeled to proven entities. All donations are matched through the Gannett Foundation and the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, which means every dollar is worth more.”

Give back, have fun During this festive time of year, some organizations stage special events to raise both money and awareness. On Nov. 30, for example, local police officers and firefighters will take part in 911 Slugfest (www.911slugfest.com) to raise money for Make-A-Wish Foundation. On Dec. 5, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc., is hosting an “It’s a Wonderful Life” benefit. This family-friendly event raises money for downtown beautification, said Jennifer Hanson, senior director of communications for Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. Anyone who grew up watching the Frank Capra classic on TV will enjoy seeing it on IMAX’s big screen. The silent auction preceding the movie is an opportunity to grab great deals at downtown restaurants, hotels and attractions. “For $6, you’re helping downtown Indy remain clean, green and vibrant,” Hanson said.

Make it personal No matter where or how you choose to donate dollars, the investment of your personal time can mean even more.

Perennial options include purchasing Christmas cards made by Riley Hospital for Children patients, supporting Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign or contributing in memory of a loved one. “During the holiday season, people take the opportunity to count their blessings and serve those who are less fortunate,” said Tim Harms, Harms communications director for the American Heart Association’s Midwest affiliate. “There are a lot of ways to help and a lot of organizations that are working hard to improve the quality of people’s lives every day through educational campaigns and cutting-edge research and to raise awareness of issues that affect us all. “The money donated during the holidays will do so much throughout the coming month and into 2014.” ✶
