Now in its 51st year, the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 has become a must-see holiday tradition! This year’s event will take place on Nov. 29, 2013. “The Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 are thrilled to be the presenting partners of Circle of Lights,” said Sean Seyferth, IBEW #481 business manager. “The tradition is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the standards and craft of the union electrical construction industry along with our community commitment. We invite all Hoosiers to kick off their holiday celebration with us!” Travelocity Each year, generations of families are drawn to this beautiful named Circle centerpiece in the cultural and geographical center of the city and state. The Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument will again play of Lights® one host to more than 100,000 spectators expected for the FREE Circle of the top of Lights® ceremonial lighting and holiday kickoff on Nov. 29. Once again, Monument Circle has been transformed into a shining display of holiday decor with 4,784 festive lights ready for all to enjoy throughout the season. But how does this happen and who do we have to thank for making this wonderful tradition a reality each year? For now the 51st year in a row, dedicated union electricians from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #481 have gathered at the foot of Monument Circle to join together as volunteers. More than 200 men and women carefully and skillfully installed the lights and garland that make the iconic centerpiece for the Circle of Lights®. Many organizations and individuals have played a part to design, install and implement the Circle of Lights® decor and celebration each year since. However, only one organization has taken part each and every year since 1962. In 1994 the responsibility transitioned from the Indianapolis Holidays Committee to Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. Then, in 2004, IBEW #481 and its labor-management partnership, The Quality Connection, expanded their role to become the presenting partners of Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481. Quality Connection is a labor management partnership that represents more than 100 union electrical contractors and more than 3,000 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) #481 electrical workers. about the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument and Circle of Lights® presented by Quality Connection and IBEW #481 1.

Standing 284 feet, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument is just 21 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty.

The monument is the largest in the nation dedicated to the common soldier.

The 38-foot tall bronze ﬁgure atop the statue is named Victory, but Hoosiers also call her Miss Indiana. She faces south to welcome soldiers returning from battle. During the summer of 2011, Victory was removed for the ﬁrst time in 118 years for repairs then put back in place that September.

The stone sculptures were the work of Rudolf Schwarz, an Austrian sculptor. The soldiers initially had full beards, but were thought to look “too German” so Schwarz chipped away at the limestone to shave the beards.

The monument took nearly 12 years to construct and is made of Indiana limestone from Terre Haute Stone Co. quarries.

Building costs at the turn of the 20th

century totaled $598,318. Building a similar structure today would cost more than $500 million.

The groups of statues on the monument’s east face represent War and The Dying Soldier; Peace and The Return Home are on the west face.

The four statues at the corners of the monument represent different methods of military warfare: infantry, cavalry, artillery and navy.

Within the monument’s cornerstone is a large box containing, among other things, a list of all the soldiers from Indiana who fought for the Union, a photograph of the monument’s German architect, Bruno Schmitz, and a Civil War-era battle ﬂag.

10. Every holiday season, the Monument is transformed into a spectacular centerpiece. The Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481 celebrates its 51st anniversary this year. The free

event is Friday, Nov. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monument Circle.

11. Surrounding the Circle are 26 larger-

than-life toy soldiers and sailors (12 feet tall) and 26 peppermint sticks (10 feet tall).

12. There are 52 garland strands with

4,784 colored lights strung from the top of the monument to its base. Each bulb color represents a branch of the US military: Army – green; Air Force – clear; Navy – blue; Coast Guard – yellow; Marines – red.

13. More than six miles of electrical wire

and two miles of garland are used for the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW #481.

14. The lights will be turned on the day

after Thanksgiving and remain lit until Jan. 11, allowing nearly two months to take in this beloved holiday tradition.

The legend of the Cherub continues

It was 1946. World War II had just ended and thousands returned home from military service. Among them, Virginia Holmes — a prize-winning commercial artist — came back to Indianapolis and started her career in the advertising department at L.S. Ayres, a downtown department store. When it came time to compose the 1946 holiday catalog, merchandise was still in short supply, so Holmes created whimsical cherubs to ﬁll the somewhat empty pages. Customer response was so great that Ayres perpetuated their appearance in its 1947 holiday advertising. It also was the store’s 75th anniversary, and that called for a special addition to the holiday celebration plans. Ayres commissioned David Rubin, a nationally recognized Indianapolis sculptor and Herron School of Art instructor, to create a bronze cherub for the store’s landmark clock, located on the building at the corner of Washington and Meridian streets.

Cherub keeps watch As the story is told, the whimsical Cherub mysteriously appeared atop the clock on Thanksgiving Eve 1947 to keep a watchful eye on holiday shoppers until Santa took over on Christmas Eve. This started a powerful tradition that lives in the hearts, minds and memories of the city and its grateful citizens. In the 66 years since, thousands have had the pleasure of seeing the Cherub overhead each holiday season. The May Department Store Co. purchased L.S. Ayres in 1986, and in 1992 it moved the Cherub to its headquarters in St. Louis. There was tremendous public outcry when the Cherub didn’t appear that holiday season. In response, May donated the Cherub to the City of Indianapolis and in 1994 Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. became the Cherub’s legal guardian. So keep an eye out. On Dec. 5, Indianapolis Downtown, Inc., is hosting an “It’s a Wonderful Life” benefit. This family-friendly event raises money for downtown beautification, said Jennifer Hanson, senior director of communications for Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. Anyone who grew up watching the Frank Capra classic on TV will enjoy seeing it on IMAX’s big screen. The silent auction preceding the movie is an opportunity to grab great deals at downtown restaurants, hotels and attractions. “For $6, you’re helping downtown Indy remain clean, green and vibrant,” Hanson said.
