elcome to the first issue of inFalmouth (yay!). After several months of excitement, preparation, and a successful Crowdfunder campaign to help get us started, we are absolutely over-the-moon that it’s finally here. Huge thanks again to everyone who spread the word and donated. You helped make this a reality and we are truly grateful. For those of you that don’t know inFalmouth yet, we’re all about enjoying life, celebrating creativity and bringing people together in our buzzy, beautiful town. In each issue we’ll be giving you lots of ideas for new things to do and explore, sharing exciting community stories, and providing a platform for local creatives to publish their work. In Issue 1 we’ve got plenty of inspiration for getting the most out of summer in Falmouth, from stand-up paddle boarding (page 6) to rock pooling (beginners guide on page 28). Make your best ever Gylly beach barbeque with a top notch steak sandwich recipe on page 32, or if plant-based food is more your thing read all about vegan nights at Good Vibes cafe on page 40. We’re advocates of looking after our town and being as sustainable as possible and we’re sure that you are too! Find out about Falmouth’s ‘Plastic Free Town’ status and how you can help on page 22. We’re also pleased to introduce you to some wonderfully talented local creatives in this issue including jeweller Hannah Batstone (page 35) and landscape illustrator Claire Corbett (page 36). So whether you live here or you’re just visiting we hope you’ll find some joy from all of this and more in our brand new, lovingly-created magazine. Follow @infalmouth on Instagram and Facebook for regular doses of Fal-goodness and please do share the love - pass this magazine onto a friend once you’re done with it. cool off with a cone The famous ‘quirky ice creams’ at Swanpool beach are a must when the sun’s shining - made with clotted cream ice cream from Callestick Farm. We love the Chocolate Jaffa, the Hedgehog, and the Sticky Toffee. For a classic Cornish cone try Roskilly’s on Arwenack Street or if you prefer an Italian artisan gelato head to Ciuri Ciuri on Church Street.

Pollen counts are high but here’s a little trick for hayfever sufferers: if you’re bunged up and sniffly put a pinch of sea salt on your tongue and let it dissolve. Children laugh hundreds of times a day so why is it as we get older we laugh less and less? With life’s daily stresses and worries, it’s so ah Gr Emma important to be playful, lose your inhibitions and find time to laugh again. Now you can make it a regular thing at Falmouth Laughter Club.

inFalmouth

The power of laughter

We all know how great it feels to have a good laugh. But did you know that regular laughter - real or fake - can improve your health and increase wellbeing? In 1995 Dr Madan Kataria, a medical doctor in India, wrote a paper called ‘Laughter – The Best Medicine’ which included the scientifically-proven fact that whether we are really laughing or simulating laughter, we get the same physiological and psychological benefits. Dr Kataria and his wife, Madhuri, a Hatha Yoga practitioner, developed exercises to encourage laughter and breathing techniques and Laughter Yoga was born.

11

What does it involve?

This is different to your typical yoga class. Yoga is about unity of mind, body and spirit, and Laughter Yoga achieves this through a mixture of breathing techniques, childlike ‘play’ and exercises that encourage laughter. “You’ll leave with Why not also try the a unique feeling of being therapeutic laughter skills equally energised and workshops at Falmouth relaxed” says Emma. Yoga Space with Katie White We wanted that feeling! of The Best Medicine? Or if So agreed to give it a try...

Lots of laughs

Laughter Yoga and Laughter Therapy have gained popularity all over the world in recent years, and for good reason. From reducing stress hormones and decreasing blood pressure, to boosting the immune system and increasing energy levels, a quick Google of the benefits of laughter will show you there’s no end of excellent reasons to give it a try.

Laughing in Falmouth

Emma Graham set up Happy Go Yoga to help get Cornwall laughing, increase people’s wellbeing and improve social connections, and promote a healthy, happy community. Whilst she’s only been running the club for less than a year, numbers of laughter-seeking locals are steadily growing and attending her Laughter Club sessions.

Club in Newquay or get Hannah (inFalmouth giggling at Wadebridge Founder) says: Laughter Club. “Admittedly I felt a little nervous as I made my way to my first session. I didn’t know what to expect and the thought of laughing on command in front of a group of strangers put me out of my comfort zone. But just ten minutes in, I was over the initial awkwardness and began to have fun! It’s not often that we find ourselves behaving in such a surreal manner as adults, especially with a group of strangers. We rhythmically clapped to ‘ho ho, ha ha ha’. We threw pretend balls of laughter at each other. We used our hands as ‘naked sock puppets’ to giggle to others around the room. We drove around in imaginary cars powered by revs of laughter. There’s no way around saying it - it was bonkers. But in a really good way! For the majority of the session I was fake laughing but by the end during our ‘free laughter’ time, I was lying on the floor REAL laughing so hard my face was hurting, my belly muscles felt like they were having a good workout and mascara was running down my face. I left feeling absolutely elated.”

intage and second hand clothing shops are not only a more ethical choice than the high-street brands, but they also allow you discover a more unique style – and Falmouth is in no shortage of them. I used to struggle a bit with vintage and second hand clothing shops – I never took the time to browse and if I didn’t immediately find something I loved in exactly my size for 50p I would storm out and head straight for New Look. Since being able to while away entire days wandering in and out of Falmouth’s shops, my mind set has taken a total U-turn. I now adore spending afternoons leafing through the clothing rails of Two Kings, pouring over the leather jackets in Dig’N’Delve or buying yet another flannel shirt from Wild Pony. For those yet to discover their love for rifling through old clothes that never lose their charm – here’s a quick tour of some of my favourites.

Dig’n’Delve is a gold mine. Tear yourself away from the misc. tools and chargers (you never know when one might come in handy), and this place has an unreal amount of oddly specific items of clothing. Their specialities are; leather jackets – in every colour, style and size imaginable it seems. Wetsuits – they can be super expensive bought new and let’s be real, the Cornish seas are never quite as tropical as we might like. Dungarees – I found a pair of Carharrt ones in there the other day! Wild Pony and its next door Sale Shop has bargains left right and centre. From every colour of flannel shirt to luxurious winter coats, Wild Pony have selected only the finest pieces for their super-cool shop. Make sure you don’t overlook their sale shop next door either, which often has an utterly irresistible offer on – fill up a basket with as much as you physically can and pay a fixed price (around £20) for the lot. inFalmouth

“Supporting second-hand shops is an ethical way of shopping”

Finders Keepers

If it’s a kilo sale you’re after, venture into St. George’s Arcade for Falmouth’s answer to Urban Outfitters – Two Kings. Keep your eye on their Facebook page for upcoming kilo sales (usually held at The Poly), but otherwise call in to pick up some serious street style. With every old school sportswear brand you could think of, Two Kings will kit you out in plenty of pre-loved 90’s gear. Supporting second-hand shops is an ethical way of shopping - however Posh Pants Boutique take it to the next level. Run by Pants Cancers, the profits taken from this fancy vintage hideaway are given to the charity, supporting people who have suffered from cancer in the “pants area” and raising awareness. If you’re after wedding outfits or event-wear, don’t overlook this awesome little shop. On the Old High Street, make sure you pop into Vintage Warehouse 13. Their vintage fit jeans are to die for (and they’ve always got a decent array of sizes), their winter jumpers have patterns like no others and their 70’s style tea dresses will make you long for the sound of Neil Young on a warm summer’s evening. Find more secondhand fashion treasures on the market stalls at The Moor and Falmouth’s array of well-stocked charity shops. inFalmouth

Plastic free’s the way to be

Photography by Frances Eyre, a freelance documentary and underwater photographer with a passion for conservation.

Let’s join together to take action on plastic pollution and take pride in our town.

Y

ou may have heard the fantastic news that Falmouth was awarded ‘Plastic free coastline status’ from Surfer’s Against Sewage back in March this year thanks to the efforts of volunteer groups Plastic Free Falmouth (PFF) and Falmouth Marine Conversation (FMC). These dedicated teams have been working hard since

“It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your background is...”

January to make our town (and the world!) a better place. Their aim is to raise awareness and stop the needless pollution of our waters with plastic, in particular single-use. The premise is that only through concrete, collective, positive action will we be able to stop the flood of plastic pollution from overwhelming our planet. “It doesn’t matter how old you are or what your background is, everyone can help solve the problems we’re facing and make a difference” says Kirstie Edwards, Lead Coordinator at PFF. “We all need to come together as a community and take responsibility for the place that we live in”.

What can I do to help?

REFUSE

REFILL There are free water points to fill your own bottle all over Falmouth, including Gylly Beach Cafe, The Chainlocker, Huddle, The Stable, Five Degrees West and more. Look out for the Refill Station logo.

RECYCLE Britons create an average of 177kg of waste per year. Think before you bin and look for recycling points around town.

Say no to condiment sachets, straws, takeaway coffee cups, plastic cutlery… they are all items that can be replaced with sustainable alternatives. Both The Natural Store and recently opened plastic-free shop un_rap on Webber Street are offering many great solutions for reducing your single-use plastic footprint.

BIN IT For the waste that you do put out for collection make sure you’re using a seagull-proof sack to avoid unwittingly contributing to marine litter. They are FREE for residents and businesses to pick up from the council (on the Moor).

inFalmouth

24 Plastic free’s the way to be

Falmouth Business Owners become a Plastic Free Champion JOIN IN Do your own #2minutebeachclean or get involved with an organised event. During a beach clean with PFF you’ll help by sorting found waste into recycling, non-recyclable plastic and landfill. The nonrecyclable plastics get passed on to two local companies - Fathoms Free who use them to make kayaks, and Plastic Oceanic who turn the waste into beautiful jewellery. Look out for details of events on Facebook. Find out more about how to get involved here:  Plastic Free Falmouth sas.org.uk/plastic-free-communities See more of Frances Eyres’ photography: franceseyre.com

To gain Plastic Free Coastline status, PFF had to achieve a number of goals set from Surfer’s Against Sewage, which included getting at least 12 Falmouth businesses on board who have swapped three or more items of single-use plastics like straws and cups, for more sustainable alternatives. Now there are more than 35 businesses who are a part of this movement - and you can be too. As well as doing your bit for the environment, in becoming a Plastic Free Champion your business will benefit from a photo shoot and promotion on the plastic free map, on social media and in PR. Join Plastic Free Falmouth in building a local network making positive changes, sharing responsibility and taking pride for the town where we work and live. Wildlife spotting W

e all know that Cornwall is an amazing part of the world, with its sweeping cliffs, rolling seas and untouched areas of natural beauty. But unless you’re a regular out on the water, it can be hard to spot the many species of marine life that make their habitats here. AK Wildlife Cruises brings the opportunity for you to discover these magnificent creatures along our coastline. AK Wildlife Cruises’ tour operator Captain Keith Leeves runs trips from Falmouth all year round, sharing his vast knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for Cornwall’s marine life with anyone who joins him. Having been lucky enough to go on a trip with him on a flat calm, sunny day this June, we can honestly say that it was an incredible experience that we would recommend to anyone - whether you’re a local or a visitor. On any given boat trip (and no two trips are the same) you might

see dolphins, Basking sharks, Harbour porpoise, or even Minke whales. Birdwatchers can be rewarded with close-up sightings of all manner of sea birds. Captain Keith is not only passionate about nature, he’s WiSe Accredited so you can be assured he’s approaching the animals in the safest way with minimal disturbance. On our trip we witnessed guillemots in their nesting grounds, puffins, a peregrine falcon, a common seal, blue jellyfish and a glimpse of a harbour porpoise. But for us the highlight was being amongst a pod of over a hundred common dolphins swimming alongside the boat, jumping and splashing out of the water, whistling and clicking and playing together. Standing just a metre or so above these majestic creatures in the wild was a truly awe-inspiring experience. It served as a great reminder of how lucky we are to live in these extraordinarily beautiful surroundings and peacefully share our home with this spectacular marine life. Sheer joy. Trips run daily all year round. Prior booking is essential. Find out more at akwildlifecruises.co.uk.

Rock Pooling THE BEGINNER’S GUIDE

The Beginner’s Guide // Rock Pooling

29

F

almouth’s seashores are perfect for discovering all kinds of fascinating creatures. Get the most out of your rock pooling adventures with these tips from Heather Buttivant, Cornwall Wildlife Trust volunteer and creator of cornishrockpools.com.

2

WHAT TO TAKE It’s useful to have a bucket, identification guide and magnifying glass. Wear wellies or other shoes that have good grip, can get wet and protect your feet from sharp rocks.

3

LOOK UNDER ROCKS AND OVERHANGS Look deep into pools and crevices in the rock. Gently lift stones and seaweed and watch out for any movement, shapes or colours that stand out. You might find starfish, shore crabs, rock goby, pipe fish, shrimps, anemones and more.

4

DON’T USE NETS Many rock pool creatures are small and delicate and being tangled in a net can cause them harm. If you want a closer look, gently push your bucket in the water to scoop up the critter.

5

TAKE YOUR TIME Move slowly around the rock pools to avoid damaging them and scaring creatures - this way you’ll see a bigger variety of wildlife too!

6

LEAVE NO TRACE Always carefully replace stones and leave pools exactly as you found them. Once you’ve finished why not do a #2minutebeachclean?

HOW TO PICK UP A CRAB To keep a rock pool crab safe and happy - and avoid being pinched when picking it up - you need to handle it carefully. Place a finger on the centre of its shell and push down just enough to hold it still. Grip it ‘under the armpits’ with your thumb and one finger and gently lift it out of the water. Once you have taken a look at your crab, immediately return it to the pool in which you found it or place it in a bucket of cool seawater. Place just one crab in a bucket at a time and never for more than a few minutes.

CHECK THE WEATHER AND THE TIDE Aim to start an hour or two before low tide. Calm, dry days are better for seeing into the water.

Reorganise your fire to balance your grill. Peel red onion, place on foil, season/oil/honey then place on red hot embers root side down for up to 15 mins. Lines & landscapes

C

laire Corbett is an illustrator and designer who takes inspiration from Cornwall’s rugged landscape, culture, wildlife and history. Originally from Kent, Claire fell in love with Falmouth and Cornwall when she moved down 7 years ago. She’s been kind enough to tell us how she goes about creating her pen and ink landscapes, in case you’re inspired to have a go yourself!

1

First I pack a bag with my sketchbook, a pen and pencil (my go to is a 0.05 Unipin fine liner and 0.5 P205 Pentel pencil), water and something to munch on (a baked treat from Stones Bakery on The Old High Street would always be my favourite option).

2

Once I have everything, I set off on an walk. Sometimes I get a train to somewhere further afield in Cornwall. I don’t often have much of a plan as to where I’m going, I just follow my curiosity.

Once comfortable and preferably sheltered from potential rain showers, I open my sketchbook to a blank page and sketch out a landscape or portrait border, depending on what part of the view I want to focus on.

5 6 7 8

I always draw a rough outline of the terrain, including hints of as much fauna and flora as possible.

I usually work from foreground to background so that any plants I border the landscape with overlap and remain a prominent part of the illustration. Using intricate patterns, stippling, changing parallels and cross hatching, I ink in the initial drawing. I make sure to leave enough negative space to highlight certain areas of the landscape.

Once I’m happy with the details I erase all traces of the sketched outlines. I then sit back, eat mentioned packed snack and take a photo of the view for later reference.

Here & There A poem by Kyle Wotton, written shortly before he moved to Falmouth earlier in the summer.

Here is a place that I call home, Though soon comes time to leave. T h e r e i s a n o p p o r t u n i t y, And coastal air to breathe.

Here are some cherished memories, Here & There

And friends I leave behind. There are new possibilities; A whole new life to f ind.

Here is a place I have to leave, To f i n d a p l a c e t o r o a m . There in beautiful Falmouth, I’ll find my future home.

an interview with

Dan & Jade at Rooted

So how did Rooted come about? J: We successfully ran vegan nights at Good Vibes every two months for a year and half, so we saw a gap in the market for offering more regular plant-based evening food. D: We also felt that there was a market for tapas-style meals on Sunday nights. We wanted to offer something different and set ourselves apart by leaving Friday and Saturday nights to the already established locals restaurants. We’re both passionate about creating dishes that allow people to enjoy veg in a new way - we enjoy it as much as the customers do!

Is it exclusively for vegans? D: No. It’s accessible, plant-based food for everyone to try, especially people who want to try something a bit different. J: Neither of us are vegan! And the majority of our customers are not vegan. We love vegetables and think it’s sad that they often get left at the sideline when they can be amazing dishes on their own. Tell us about your most popular dishes. J: Mushrooms dishes are always popular - but generally people order everything on the menu to share so they get to try them all. D: Dishes change all the time based on what’s in season. We source locally where we can. It keeps the menu varied and exciting. What are your personal favourites? D: I love doing ‘Carrots three ways’: roasted herbal, carrot bon bon and

carrot purée. It’s the epitome of what we’re about - taking something simple and making it special. J: My favourite is tempura asparagus tips with the stalks marinated in sesame. What sort of prices can people expect to pay? An interview with : Dan & Jade at Rooted

J: Dishes are between £6 and £8. For two people to order one of everything (which is what we recommend) it’s £25 per person - and that includes corkage so you can bring your own bottle.

it’s time for a day off so we can spend time together outside of work. How do your personalities complement each other to help run the business? D: Jade is super-organised and great with the customers and promoting the business. J: Dan dreams in food and I’m always amazed and inspired by the new dishes that he comes up with. D: We always encourage each other and whilst our personalities can be quite different, we both have the same ambitious attitude and passion for food. What’s in store for Rooted in the future?

Do people need to book? D: Yes, to guarantee a table. We also prefer it that so that we have an idea of how much food to prepare. We try to avoid food waste as much as possible. J: It’s best to book via a Facebook or Instagram message (Good Vibes or Rooted). So how it’s been working together as a couple? D: The reason we started Rooted is because we work so well together. J: Being in this venture as couple is really nice - and we met whilst working together at Good Vibes Cafe so we’ve not known NOT working together! Have you faced any challenges? J: Work is very close to home… D: Yes, sometimes we have to say

D: We wanted Rooted to grow organically and have been quite lucky to have the opportunity to do that alongside Good Vibes, which remains as our main business. We’ve both really enjoyed watching it progress so far. J: It’s been so exciting to see how much it’s developed and changed already. D: As plant-based food becomes more and more popular, we’re proud to be a part of the movement in Falmouth. 28, Killigrew Street. Open from 6pm on Sunday nights.  @rooted_falmouth
