ISSUE 2 Blustery walks & winter warmers

01 ISSUE 2

hello

I

can hardly believe it’s here already - but welcome to the second issue of inFalmouth! Doesn’t time fly? It’s been a whirlwind of a year with the launch of the magazine and we’re super chuffed to say that we had an overwhelmingly positive response to Issue 1. Thank you so much to all you lovely readers and local businesses that have supported us so far. We can’t tell you how wonderful it feels (and how proud we are) to know you’re enjoying it. We hope you’ll enjoy Issue 2 just as much. This issue is all about celebrating the joys of winter in Falmouth, like wrapping up in a woolly hat and scarf, grabbing a hot pasty and going for a blustery dog-walk on Gylly. Or gathering your friends for a roast dinner in a cosy pub with a harbour view. The days might be shorter and darker but we’ve put together some wellbeing tips to keep you healthy and smiling (page 4) as well as plenty of ideas for things to do when the weather’s not so good, from pottery painting (page 8) to pub quizzes (page 10). Of course, there’s the lead up to Christmas to revel in festive activities and merriment too. Spread goodwill and cheer by supporting local and gift shopping in Falmouth’s unique independent shops (page 12). And why not take a pitstop for some warming world cuisine for lunch (page 23)? So whether you’re local or just visiting, we hope you’ll get inspired by all of this and more in our lovingly-created magazine. Do get in touch and let us know what you think! And if you want to see what we get up to behind the scenes join our community of Falmouth-lovers on Instagram (@infalmouth). Enjoy the read and embrace the winter :) Hannah Founder & Editor

We’re a small independent magazine supported by advertising. If you decide to visit a shop, restaurant or any other Falmouth business because of something you’ve seen in this issue, please do us a favour and let them know.

Winter With shorter days and cold wet weather it can be tough to stay active, social and motivated at this time of year – but there’s plenty you can do boost your physical and mental wellbeing. We’ve put together some tips to keep you healthy and smiling in Falmouth this winter. Get outdoors When it’s chilly outside it can be tempting to hibernate, but put your coat and woolly hat on and embrace it. Going for a blustery walk on the beach is invigorating and bound to lift your mood. Immersing yourself in nature and taking notice of the sights, sounds and smells around you is even better. The coast path between Gylly and Maenporth is perfect for this. Keep your eyes peeled and you might spot a seal near the shoreline or a pod of dolphins out at sea. Ladies, especially new mums—if you fancy a regular stroll as part of a group, local Personal Trainer Imogen Money runs a free Ladies Walking Club on Thursdays at 10.30am from Gylly. It’s a chance to get moving, meet new people and have a good natter. inFalmouth

Tr e a t y o u r b o d y to a massage It’s important to take time to relax and give your body the treatment it needs. Even if you’ve only got 10 minutes try the mini neck and shoulder massage at Moon Rise Acupuncture Clinic. It’s only £8 and could be a great quick fix. For something a bit more thorough, Inspiring Health is a natural health clinic offering a range of specialist massage techniques. Or for the ultimate in indulgence and relaxation head to the recently renovated St. Michaels Spa. They have a range of amazing treatments as well as a hydrotherapy pool with 21 massage stations, a herbal Finnish sauna, experience showers and more. Check out our competition on page 48 if you’d like the chance to win this dreamy spa experience.

Wo r k o u t

Winter wellbeing

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: exercise is the best medicine! Regular exercise increases energy, strengthens your immune system, combats stress and eases anxiety and depression—so it’s even more important to make it a priority if the winter affects your mood. If you need some inspiration and encouragement, you’ll find a super positive atmosphere and friendly trainers at the Gym Project on Falmouth Industrial Park. Their group fitness classes are a great way to get involved. There are options for all abilities and preferences, from yoga and Pilates to boxing and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and their recent extension means there’s plenty of space to get moving. The endorphins will be flowing in no time.

Tr y s o m e t h i n g n e w Stepping out of your comfort zone can have a transformative effect on your mental wellbeing—so taking up a new hobby or learning a new skill is guaranteed to make you feel good. And it’s even better if you can make it a social event too. There are plenty of fun workshops, clubs and activities happening in Falmouth. Arts and crafts lovers will enjoy pop-up sewing workshops with Olde Velvet Gypsies (see pages 34 & 35) or a pottery or painting workshop at The Poly. If you love to sing check out Sing Falmouth, a contemporary community choir who meet at the Rugby Club every Monday (7.30pm). They’re welcoming new members—with no auditions and no need for experience. Or if you’d rather do something from the comfort of your home learning a language is a great way to keep your brain active. Why not try Cornish? Learncornishnow.com have a range of online courses you can do at your own pace.

Hygge your home Hygge is Norwegian term pronounced ‘hoo-ga’. It loosely translates as ‘cosiness and contentment’ and is all about embracing the cold dark months and focusing on simple pleasures. Read a book by the fire. Slowly sip a freshlybrewed coffee. Cook a meal and invite friends over. Light some candles and watch Christmas films on Netflix. Whatever you love doing at home when it’s cold outside, snuggle down and do it. inFalmouth

S

tar Glazers, on the Old High Street, is a pottery painting café that I’ve recently discovered offers the perfect wholesome Sunday activity, especially on a rainy day. When we went inside we were invited to browse the shelves filled with unfired ceramics. From mugs and plates to piggy banks and Christmas decorations, it was hard to know what to choose! My practical side set in and I opted for the butter dish – a fine piece of pottery. Prices for items start at £5 and go right up to £25, so there’s something for all budgets. With coffees ordered, we were told about the process, shown the vast variety of colours, brushes, stamps and magazines for inspiration, and then

left to our own devices. I don’t think of myself as an inherently creative person – I’ve never been very good at painting or drawing, and having a graphic designer as a partner I tend to leave all the artistic stuff to him! However, I got really stuck into this. There was something so therapeutic about the whole time we spent there, with a calm, relaxed atmosphere, everyone focussed on their own little piece of pottery. There were people in one corner producing fine art on vases, another couple recreating an anime scene on a plate, and a friend painting a Falmouth Harbour-inspired boat lit up at night on a Christmas decoration. I just stuck safely to stripes, but the call of the fine liners,

letter stamps and stencils was almost too much to bear! We spent a couple of hours decorating our chosen items, before handing them over to the Star Glazers team to fire and set which takes about a week (they text you and let you know when they’re done and ready to collect). I could quite happily spend a whole day here, it was so relaxing and something really different to do with mates too. Knowing that you’ll get your pot back in a week is super exciting, and we were all so happy with our creations. When you paint them they’re matte but the firing gives them such a nice shine and brings out the colours; it really transforms them - my butter dish now sits pride of place in the kitchen.

I will definitely be back to Star Glazers, and dragging anyone I can along with me – it’s perfect for all sorts of people of all ages. I think my five year old nephew would love it. There is something so The cafe is having a therapeutic about the refit and getting a few experience and the calm, pottery wheels soon too, relaxed atmosphere. so I can’t wait to have a go at throwing a pot! Give them a call to book a table (advisable on weekends and holidays), and check out their Instagram to get inspired by their customer’s impressive creations: @starglazersfal

By Jade Phipps, who almouth recently completed her houses an MA in Professional Writing array of at Falmouth University independent businesses and picking up your Christmas gifts from them is a great way to support the town and ensure that its creativity can continue to thrive. Here are some of my favourite places to find the perfect presents.

FOR THE FOOD-OBSESSED The Courtyard Deli is a haven for foodie gifts - whether you want to treat someone to a cheese and charcuterie-inspired hamper, or a quirky salt and pepper mill. The Deli’s recent venture to create bespoke

macarons is a winner, with handcrafted and beautifully packaged boxes from just £6.50. For all things Cornish from fudge and chocolate to chutneys and pickles, you’ll find everything you want and more at A Gift from Cornwall (formerly Halzephron); or for health foods, vegan and gluten-free alternatives try The Natural Store. Why not give the gift of plasticfree with Un_rap, Falmouth’s new hot-spot for food without the waste? The Old High Street is the home of vintage fares in Falmouth, starting at the bottom of the hill with Marmalade Antiques. Full of ‘all things old, gorgeous and quirky’ this charming shop can often be found spilling its contents out onto the street, with baskets, benches, glassware and teapots giving the impression that you never know what you might find if you’re prepared to dig deep enough. A little further up the street visit Vintage Warehouse 13 in their newly opened shop (just across the road from their previous spot!). It’s a great place to pick up a unique piece of vintage clothing, from cosy jumpers and over-sized checked shirts to party dresses and leather handbags. This is a treasure trove for anyone who appreciates one-of-akind pieces for their wardrobe. Right at the top of the hill is Ludgate House Antiques, with their ever-growing collection of carefully curated furniture and homeware, perfect for lovers of traditional antiques.

FOR THE SURF-ADDICT For surfboards and accessories head to Freeriders where they can give you expert advice on gear for your surfobsessed buddies. Winter surfers will appreciate a jumper, hoodie or beanie from Ann’s Cottage, Cornwall’s biggest surf and skate retailer. You’ll find all the best clothing brands here without having to leave the high street. Sessions Surf Shop is great for shoes in particular and they often have a sale section, meaning you can pick up a bargain while still keeping it independent. For something special for their wall go to Waves Gallery and choose a stunning framed print from Cornish waves and coastline photographer Mike Lacey. Shop local this Christmas

They stock a bunch of Cornwall-related books so you can get something that’s personal to the corner of the world you call home. If it’s a music buff you’re shopping for then head to Sounds OK or Jam for a range of new and used records and CDs. For cute houseplants and pots try Toro or Longstaffs; or for handmade jewellery that doesn’t break the bank, fashion boutiques Parade and blink both have lovely collections. Willow & Stone is a must-visit for beautiful homeware, stationery and handmade soaps, and hours can be spent browsing while you choose the perfect gift for your friend who appreciates the good things in life. But starting your own thing or working alone can be quite isolating too. We wanted to provide an alternative; a place where creative professionals could come and get their heads down when they need to, but equally meet other like-minds, be inspired, connect and maybe even collaborate’. think we can all agree that the quickest way to our hearts is through our stomachs. And in that spirit, the quickest way to the heart of Falmouth is through its diverse selection of world foods. As someone who has put in the time and research—and has the tummy to prove it—I’m here to whisk you away to your favourite part of the world, just in time for lunch.

If Mexican food is what you’re offers after, a delicious taste of Latin America. This is a quick grab-and-go option where you can build your own lunch with various choices of wraps, fillings, sauces, and the option of extra sides. I cannot recommend this place highly enough—though, be warned, things can get a little messy. Lunch from 12pm every day.

Amanzi

The Bobotie is insane and their homemade ginger beer is truly something to be experienced. Lunch from 12pm-2pm every day. For a tapas bar with a tropical twist, . look no further than Their food is cooked with heaps of love and they offer a range of delicious meals (including yummy vegan options). Whatever it is you’re looking for, I highly recommend the Caribbean roti wraps, which come with your choice of one of their four tasty fillings. Lunch from 10am-3pm every day.

Bahama Mamas

Made with locallysourced seafood and ingredients, reasonably priced and great for sharing, you can mix-and-match a range of delicious mouthfuls and give your taste buds a proper treat. Fal-local Coffee with friends The Ope is one of my favourite places to hang out for coffee - and food. Their menu is always changing and it’s always delicious. Bar If I want a relaxed night out I’ll go to The Chintz, or for a cocktail, The Brig.

Hangover brunch The Big Breakfast Hash with a side of Mac & Cheese at Little Red Rooster. Sunday stroll The coast path from Swanpool to Maenporth has the most amazing views and lots of little tracks and things to discover.

Shop I could spend hours browsing the huge range of beautiful books at Falmouth Bookseller. I want to buy them all.

Date night For a special date night it has to be Olivers. For something a little lower budget it might be burgers at The Meat Counter, then home for a board game!

Thing to do on a rainy day I love The Poly. There’s always something different going on but I especially love their films. They have unique showings from all over the world, from all genres and all eras.

Work out I prefer exercising outdoors all year round, especially running around Pendennis Point. In summer I did some personal training with IM Fitness and we’d do our work outs on the beach early in the morning, which was an amazing way to start the day. inFalmouth

Thing to do on a sunny day Meet friends at Gylly Beach Cafe and spend the afternoon drinking rosé! In winter they have outdoor heaters so we can still sit out and enjoy the fresh air, right by the beach.

Falmouth Age Concern (FAC) is an independent, local charity serving Falmouth, Penryn and the surrounding villages. Their incredible Befriending Service sees a team of over 60 volunteers visiting elderly people in the community who are isolated, housebound or feeling cut off from the world. By dedicating just one hour a week, often simply for a chat and a cup of tea, these volunteers are making a huge difference to people’s lives and wellbeing. But the service doesn’t just benefit the elderly - volunteers often get huge rewards too, in the form of lasting friendships. Here are two pairs of friends who have been lucky enough to find just that.

hen 96 year old World War 2 veteran Ted met retired policeman Rob through the Befriending service, they immediately hit it off. On the day of his first visit to Ted’s home Rob had been watching a documentary about the silk escape maps used in the war. He told Ted about it to start the conversation and Ted had said ‘Well do you want to see one now?’ and dug his out, much to Rob’s awe and fascination. He has since shared hundreds of stories with Rob, about his time in the war as a spitfire pilot (he joined at just 17 years old with only 15 hours of practice!) and about his career as a doctor in Germany and then Truro Infirmary after the war. Rob says ‘I’ve got great

respect for his generation and just love listening to his stories. He’s always been a bit of a rebel and I really like that’. The pair share the same wicked sense of humour and banter back and forth like a couple of young lads at the pub. For 18 months Rob has been visiting Ted at home and taking him out, often for coffee or sometimes for trips further afield - Ted’s a big art-lover and they went to the Tate St. Ives recently. They see each other once a week and usually talk on the phone a couple of times too. Ted has a few neighbours who are friends but generally he keeps himself to himself and a lot of the time he’s on his own, so always looks forward to Rob’s company: ‘Rob is welcome here anytime. He’s a great guy and I don’t know what I’d do without him now’.

Janet & Elizabeth

Elizabeth has lived in her home with sweeping views of Falmouth harbour for 52 years. Her family are mostly in Somerset and whilst they say she should move closer, she is totally happy where she is and doesn’t want to leave. When FAC approached her after she had two mini strokes, she said she wasn’t lonely but she was alone. Elizabeth is comfortable in her own company and has never been one for social or group events - but as she was having some issues with mobility since the strokes, she agreed to a one hour visit from Janet, retired bookkeeper and Befriending volunteer. She was dubious but when Janet arrived ‘smelling lovely’ and wearing the same Dior perfume that Elizabeth had always worn, they quickly got chatting and the hour flew by. That was 3 years ago. The pair quickly grew closer and regularly enjoy going out inFalmouth

for lunches together (their favourites being Upperdeck and Muddy Beach Cafe), playing Rummikub, visiting garden centres and going shopping. Typically they’ll see each for a few hours every fortnight but they also speak on the phone regularly too. Janet has persuaded Elizabeth to go on a few of the social clubs and excursions organised by the FAC but she still prefers it to be just the two of them where she doesn’t have to ‘mingle’. Janet says ‘Elizabeth might have a few mobility issues but she certainly has a better memory than me. I often have to ask her to remind me of things!’. Grinning at each other, Elizabeth says ‘Janet is absolutely super’.

FAC have recently been awarded a lottery grant which means they can expand their Befriending Service even further. If you’re over 18, have an hour you could spare every week and would like to help, find out more about becoming a volunteer here: www.falmouthbefriending.org.uk. If you’re over 65, living alone and would like a friend to visit once a week (or if you know an local elderly person who would) call 01326 313620 to see if FAC can help.

f you fancy trying something new that’s enjoyable, eco-friendly, highly satisfying AND teaches you new skills, look no further than Olde Velvet Gypsies’ sewing workshops. These regular pop-up events are led by Falmouth-based Claire Rondel who has been a seamstress for over 20 years. Her dad sparked her passion when he bought her a sewing machine when she was young and she went on to study Fashion & Textiles at university. Claire recently set up Olde Velvet Gypsies so she can bring her skills and knowledge to novices and sewing-enthusiasts alike in Cornwall. We had the pleasure of attending one of her workshops at Palacio Lounge recently where the aim was to make a Tunic Dress. Arriving at 10am as a group of four complete beginners, it seemed highly unlikely that the piles of fabric and reels of thread we’d brought along would end up resembling items of clothing worthy of wearing. But sure enough, 6 hours later we each had a dress! Having had no previous experience of garment-making it was slightly daunting sitting down at the sewing machine. Thankfully for the first hour we had opportunities to practice with

paper, then with fabric and thread, before cutting out our patterns and moving onto the main event. Claire was patient and informative throughout the session, guiding us through everything from winding the bobbin and pinning in the right direction, to zig zag stitch and using the (slightly nerve-wracking!) overlocker machine. We quickly gained confidence on the sewing machine and there was a buzz of excitement as we worked through the steps in our pattern book and our dresses began to take shape. We all shared the same big grins and sense of achievement when we’d stitched the final hems and finished our very own lovingly handmade tunic dresses. There are several Olde Velvet Gypsies workshops to choose from, making smaller items like make-up bags (£18 for a 3 hour workshop) or full garments like dungaree dresses and jumpsuits (£55 for a 6 hour workshop). BURG’S DESIGN FURNITURE & HOMEWARE DESIGNER

J

amie Connolly set up his business Burg’s Design in October 2017. Having spent most of his working life in the marine trade, he fancied a change and decided to pursue his passion for designing and hand-crafting furniture and homewares. He makes everything from lamps and chairs to full bespoke kitchens, using wood, metal, concrete and more. From his modest workshop in Falmouth he designs and crafts items that have a functional purpose in the everyday home or workplace, each with a contemporary-rustic style. Every piece is unique except for a few smaller things like his popular concrete placemats. To see more of Jamie’s work or discuss a commission go to:  burgsdesign.com  @burgsdesign inFalmouth

n need of a mid-week pick me up? Look no further than The King’s ‘Intro’ nights, every Wednesday from 9-11pm. From students to locals and acoustic sessions to indie-folk sets, this weekly live music event consists of two or three of Falmouth’s freshest performers, celebrating musical talent on all levels. For some artists it will be their first time fronting a crowd, yet the friendly atmosphere in The Kings helps settle any nerves in an instant. Expect relaxed vibes, fairy lights and plenty of Cornish ale to go round! The management’s ethos is impressive too, as all performances are paid and are fully flexible around student’s studies. “It’s blown me away how good everyone is – there’s some inFalmouth

real talent,” says Manager, Matt Tomsett. He also describes how the musical offering is always changing with the constant flow of students in and out of the town but it seems right now, Falmouth musicians are on a different level. “The Falmouth music scene is pretty damn good at the moment.” Entry is free so why not go and see for yourself? And if your Wednesday music fix isn’t enough, the pub is now offering live music on Sundays too – the perfect accompaniment to their yummy Sunday roast. an interview with

Zebrafinch Z

ebrafinch is not your average hair salon. Since opening in September 2017 Zeb Luke Gethen has been bringing his talent, cuts and styles to Falmouth in his calm and beautifully decorated space on Swanpool Street. We chatted to Zeb to find out more about his background and passion for hairstyling, and what makes Zebrafinch unique.

An interview with : Zebrafinch

So what can people expect from an appointment at Zebrafinch? I’ve worked hard to make this a friendly, relaxed environment where people can enjoy an experience that’s more like going to a spa than a typical hair salon. I book private appointments with ample time so there’s no rushing, which is better for me as well as the client. Having a haircut should feel special and a time where people can truly chill out, be pampered and feel amazing. That’s what Zebrafinch is all about.

It certainly is a beautiful, calm environment. Thank you. It’s a really bright and airy space, which I love. I’ve chosen heritage colours and classic furniture to try and make it feel like a luxurious, but comfortable, Georgian country house. I keep my playlists chilled too! Why did you choose to open the salon in Falmouth? I’ve always loved Cornwall, especially Falmouth and the Helford. Having spent 15 years hairdressing in Nottingham, Manchester and London, I was no longer enjoying city life and wanted a lifestyle change. In the end, I moved here on a whim! It was a particularly long, stressful day in London and at 8.30pm I had a client who told me she had just handed her notice in and was moving to Cornwall. It spurred to me think it’s about time I did the same. When I moved down I felt there was a gap in the market here, so opening the salon happened organically. What has your experience led you to specialise in? I specialise in cutting and styling, so don’t currently offer a colouring service - although this is something we may offer in the salon in the future. I’ve always done a lot of styling for photo shoots, weddings and events too, and I’ve continued to pursue that passion here. Instagram is a good place to get a feel for my style and see what I get up to.

44 An interview with : Zebrafinch

How has it been working with Cornish businesses on photo shoots? There’s been much more creative freedom than the shoots I was typically doing in London. Instead of having to do styling for the likes of Fashion Week where it’s all been strictly mapped out for me, I now work collaboratively and creatively with amazingly talented people. It’s really inspiring. We’ve heard rumours that you’ve worked with some famous names… I worked with Nicky Clark in Manchester for 8 years so that did bring me some famous clients. Surrane Jones, Mel C and Liam Gallagher to name a few. That’s very exciting! How do we book? You can book by text, email, Facebook and Instagram, and I do my best to offer flexible opening times to suit you. What prices can we expect? A women’s cut & finish is £50 and a gent’s is £30. Occasion hair prices are available by consultation, either in the salon or on location.

What’s in store for Zebrafinch in the future? I want to grow but with it being my own salon, it’s wonderful to have the opportunity to do so organically and at my own pace. As I mentioned earlier, I would like to offer a colouring service in the salon so I will be looking for an experienced Colourist to join me in the near future - once I find the right person I will let you all know! In the meantime, I’m excited about what winter and the lead up to Christmas in Falmouth will bring. 1, Swanpool Street 07548 539267 www.zebrafinchhair.co.uk  @zebrafinchhair
