Göteborgs store power metal helter, Hammerfall, er aktuelle med sitt syvende album “No Sacrifice, No Victory”.

Albumet er produsert i legendariske Stage One Studios med produsent Andy Classen (Legion Of The Damned, Belphegor, Dew-Scented…)

BOO! orror, gore, and metal – what more can you wish for for a successful easter? Even better is, you get it all at Inferno now that we even got a movie programme going. Each year the black buzz spreads to new areas of Oslo, in 2009 we’re ganging up with Cinemateket so they can bring you movies, a Darkthrone gig (something we’ve never been able to do…) remastered and shown on a BIG screen, documentaries and more through the easter week. Personally I would recommend the one Norwegian movie that freaked me out – “De dødes tjern” / “Lake of the dead” – when I was a kid. Way before slasher movies made their way into my heart, this black and white creepy as hell movie made a lasting impression on many a young mind… and of course, Norways newest movie export, “Dead Snow”, where Nazi zombies are slaughtered in new and interesting ways…

BENEA REACH (NO)
WARLORD (UK)
Hardcore progressive deathmetal – it might sound strange, but Benea Reach, drawing inspiration from bands like Mastodon and Meshuggah, received allround praise for their 2008 album “Alleviat”.
They’re back! Warlord UK got back together in 2008 – prepare for the Warlord attack!
MANHATTAN SKYLINE (NO) If Dillinger Escape Plan ever had a sordid love-affair with Neurosis, the bastard lovechild would sound like these guys. If you wanna discover something new – check out this band and be blown away!
ØRKENKJØTT (NO) What is it with these non-blackmetal Norwegians? Zero Tolerance magazine called them “Norway's latest brilliantly unclassifiable band” – if you like Enslaved, Opeth, Tool and their likes you will probably LOVE Ørkenkjøtt!
DEATHHAMMER (NO) Bathory meets Celtic Frost for a case of beer in the rehearsal room and spawns this duo – oldschool to the bone darkthrash!
VÖRGUS (SE) Swedish quartet who delivers death/thrash/speed and classic heavy metal riffing. A new album, “Hellfueled Satanic Action” is expected sometime this spring. BLÅ
BLOOD RED THRONE (NO)
Drawing inspiration from the greats – Pentagram, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and so on – this gang will bring the classic doomy heaviness to the stage.
Tchort will have a busy festival this year – playing with both BRT and Carpathian Forest! Blood Red Throne played Inferno in 2002, so it’s about time they came back… They are entering the studio in February to record their new album, and hopefully they’ll premiere some of the new material at Inferno.
SARKE (NO)
TERRORDROME (GR)
Old forces joins together in this new band – Sarke of Khold/Tulus wanted to make and play music inspired by his old favorites, and brought Nocturno Culto of (duh) Darkthrone on board. Their album “Vorunah” is released through Indie Recordings.
Extremely brutal deathmetal from Greece – if you’re into Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation etc., you do NOT wanna miss these guys!!

MENCEA (GR) This young greek band surprised and convinced us of their excellence when we witnessed them live at a showcase @ Popkomm in Berlin last year. Signed to Norway’s Indie Recordings they are ready for Inferno with their technical, groovy and intensely well executed metal. VICTORIA SCENE
KAMPFAR (NO) Dark, majestic, pagan and grimm... Kampfar will stomp all over Inferno and show us what pagan metal should REALLY sound like.. With their album "Heimgang", released through Napalm Records last august, they prove that time does not heal - their sound is as raw, grandiose and freezing cold as ever!
BLACK COMEDY (NO)
For those about to drone, we very very slowly salute you ! Inspiring the initiation of both Sunn O))) (named after their favorite amps) and Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine (named after a song from their first full-length), Earth will show us personally why so many musicians found - and continue to find - them a source of inspiration for almost two decades.
They call themselves “Cyber metal” – with exDimmu/now Susperia drummer Tjodalv behind the kit you might think you know what to expect – but you really don’t.. A surreal mix of genres and styles, their 2008 album “Instigator” confused and impressed the metal community. Black Comedy must be heard!

MESHUGGAH (SE) This lean, mean, swedish war machine of technical, brutal metal truly is one of a kind. With 12 releases, 3 swedish Grammy nominations and endless touring behind them, they’ve certainly earned their place as one of the frontrunner bands in the extreme metal world. We can not begin to sing our praises to the live experience that is Meshuggah – if you haven’t seen these guys live before you DO NOT wanna miss them at Inferno!! Their latest album “Obzen” was released through Nuclear Blast march of ’08.
PESTILENCE (NL) Dutch death metal legends Pestilence will honor Inferno with their presence in 2009! A brand new album titled “Resurrection macabre”, that according to main man Mameli will be “…More tech and way more brutal than ever before" is on its way... We can’t wait to be aurally maimed and abused by these guys!

NEGURA BUNGET (RO)
After their club gig during last years Inferno we were FLOODED with wishes and threats to get these guys back – so this year we’re letting them do their dark ambient folk/black metal thing on the big stage. JOHN DEE
UNEARTHLY TRANCE (US) This trio from Brooklyn, New York will satisfy both black metallers, sludge fans and doomsters alike, having played with bands as diverse as Morbid Angel, Sunn 0))) and Warhorse, to mention a few. Their latest album “Electrocution” earned them the moniker “The Celtic Frost of Doom”. Unearthly Trance will rip your lungs out, play them like a bagpipe, make it sound fantastic - and you’ll love it so much that you’ll buy the album
RAMESSES (UK) Originally scheduled to play last year, Ramesess had to cancel due to health issues – but now they’re back in business and ready for Inferno!
SEPTIC FLESH (GR)
AZARATH (PL)
Their comeback album “Communion” needed to be extremely strong – the last album they released before they disbanded, 2003s “Sumerian Demons” was a helluva album… Septic Flesh proved that some reunions MUST happen – the album received rave reviews and we are very happy to give the stage to these Greeks during Inferno!
Polish BRUTAL metal – we’ve had our share at Inferno over the years. Although they’ve been around for over ten years, they have managed to stay under our radar until now. Brace yourselves – this is brutal, hard and sick!

FRIDAY APRIL 10. ROCKEFELLER
PARADISE LOST (UK) One of the true greats from the UK – they celebrated their first 20 years as a band in 2008. Alongside Anathema and My Dying Bride they created a whole new genre – Death-Doom. Straying into both gothic and dark synthbased pop/electronic, they returned to an older and darker sound with 2007’s “In Requiem”.
release "Plague of butterflies" EP was released this september through Spinefarm Records and got well-deserved great reviews.
good stuff. Since their initiation in 2002 they’ve released two albums - “Pick up this sick child” was released in 2007 (EU release) through Mighty Music.
VREID (NO)
ROOT (CZ)
Don’t mention the war! Well, Vreid does. Their stage show for Inferno will mirror the theme of their last two albums – “I Krig” and “Milorg” – the Norwegian resistance movement during the second world war… Angry young Sognametallers with instruments will CRUSH you!
Formed in 1987, Root was one of the first bands in the Czech Republic to thread the black metal path. With front man Jiri “Big Boss” Valter – who founded the Czech branch of Church of Satan – leading the way, their dark suggestive metal will win you over if you’re not already a fan.
DEW-SCENTED (DE)
PANTHEON I (NO)
Forerunners in the modern german thrash movement, Dew-Scented has pushed out 7 albums since 1996 – and played countless shows with bands like Immortal, Annihilator, Vader, Morbid Angel and so forth. With a fresh edge due to changes in the lineup they are ready to take on Inferno.
With a new album coming out in 2009, we thought it was only fitting to make room for some melodic extreme black metal from Pantheon I – finally!
KEEP OF KALESSIN (NO) From their early days in Trondheim these guys have come a long way the past few years, the breakthrough finally came with the releases of “Armada” and “Kolossus” that turned out to please both critics and fans tremendously. They played a short showcase at the Indie Recordings clubnight last year, but it will be a full gig with all the trimmings at Inferno this time.

Epic, dark and monumental viking metal from one of the oldest bands in the genre, the debut release "Jordmundgand" released in 1995 . Their 2008 release “Kaoskult” is their 6th album, and was welcomed with praise from the reviewers and glee from the fans.
SAMAEL (CH)
KOLDBRANN (NO)
From their post-blackmetal beginning Samael slowly moved more into the industrial landscape – but with their 2009 album “Above” the pendulum is about to brutally swing back – commenting on the new album, Vorph said: “It is like an enhanced version of our three or four first albums, maybe the missing link between ’Cermony Of Opposites’ and ’Passage’.”
One of Norway’s hardest working underground dirty blackmetal bands are back at Inferno. Probably the Norwegian band who played the most nasty clubs in Europe – then again, hard work pays off!

LUCIFER'S POETRY
PARADISE LOST
THERE CAN BE NO DOUBT THAT THE HEART OF THE INFERNO FESTIVAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN PITCH BLACK AND NORWEGIAN. YET AT THE SAME TIME INVITATIONS WENT OUT TO THOSE BANDS FROM ABROAD THAT HAVE EITHER BEEN INFLUENTIAL TO THE NORDIC SCENE OR FOUND THEIR OWN DARK PATH IN METAL MUSIC. PARADISE LOST QUALIFIES AS HEAD OF THE CLASS IN BOTH RESPECTS AND THEREFORE IT IS WITH GREAT PLEASURE THAT THIS LEGEND FROM THE UK CAN BE ANNOUNCED TO TOP THIS YEAR'S GREAT BILLING.
ucifer is believed by many to be the patron of all arts and Heavy Metal in particular. When the poet John Milton (1608-1674) created his famous rhymed epic "Paradise Lost" the proud and melancholic first angel appears to be the true hero, although he instigates the Fall of Mankind from grace. Not surprisingly the English poet was duly accused to have been directly under the influence of the devil by his critics, while he wrote "Paradise Lost" in 1667. What better name could there have been for a bunch of young musicians to adapt as their own, when they formed a new Metal band in the year 1987 to take the world by storm and change its musical course forever – as they must have been guided by Lucifer himself in the eyes of the true believers?
L
dressing up like Anthrax with coloured shirts and Bermuda shorts', Greg gives away with an audible grin. 'And Dani was driven to their shows by his dad.' Like Cradle of Filth there was early contact between PARADISE LOST and the Norwegian scene in its embryonic stage. 'Bands like Mayhem started about the same time as we did', singer Nick Holmes points out. 'I used to exchange letters with Euronymous and then there was Metalion from Slayer Mag, who always answered with something like a million pages. We all sent around our demo-tapes and these were the best days in my life.' Nick describes the old scene as some kind of an elitist club: People helped each other out to play abroad and it was most important which
awakened interest "Lost Paradise" appeared in the year 1990.
Mark of the Temptress
"Lost Paradise" follows the trend of its time as it is still firmly based on Death Metal. Yet, opposed to many of their English colleagues like Napalm Death, PARADISE LOST did not try to sound even faster or brutal, but added melancholic and solemn passages obviously deriving from Doom Metal and thereby setting them apart from their average contemporaries. 'There was just one reason for this early development: our former drummer just could not play any faster', quips Greg. It is quite obvious that the guitarist indulges in the famous British understatement, because after being at the forefront of insular 'BANDS LIKE MAYHEM STARTED ABOUT THE SAME TIME AS WE DID. I USED TO Death Doom, which was followed up Darkness Rising 'It was the idea of our singer Nick to by Anathema and My Dying Bride, EXCHANGE LETTERS WITH EURONYMOUS AND THEN THERE WAS METALION the band from Yorkshire has to be take our name from Milton's poem', recalls lead-guitarist Greg held responsible for giving birth to Mackintosh. 'We all agreed that FROM SLAYER MAG, WHO ALWAYS ANSWERED WITH SOMETHING LIKE A MILLION another genre of Metal that had 'Paradise Lost' is an amazing quite a large impact on Norway in masterpiece and its dark background PAGES. WE ALL SENT AROUND OUR DEMO-TAPES AND THESE WERE THE BEST general and Stavanger in particular. was perfectly suited to our musical Only one year after their debut album and lyrical ideas at that time.' Back was released, PARADISE LOST DAYS IN MY LIFE.' – NICK HOLMES then around the middle of the eighfollowed with even slower songs on ties a couple of kids share their love "Gothic" (1991). Although they were band-names were stitched to ones' jacket, who got for Heavy Metal and hangs around the same not the first to include female vocals as Celtic Frost the most obscure patches and who had more Northern English clubs and record-stores. Among had already done that on "To Mega Therion" (1985) tapes than the others gathered in his collection. them are vocalist Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh and intensified with "Into The Pandemonium" 'The tape-trading had a lot to do with the creativity and drummer Matthew Archer. In 1987 these three (1987), the credit of making full use of them has to of the whole scene back then and the exchange of recruit bass-player Stephen Edmondson and spirit go to "Gothic". PARADISE LOST consistently ideas', opines Nick. 'Like everybody I was a nut for away Aaron Aedy as second guitarist from his combined Nick Holmes' deep grunts with Sarah Bathory and I was fascinated by the rise of the former band and soon those guys start playing gigs Marrion's temptingly fair and clear voice. As a new Black Metal scene in the North. I still love this under the name PARADISE LOST. 'Those were result "Gothic" coined the term Gothic Metal, style from an outside perspective and always take exciting days', says Greg. 'We were trading tapes which was first take to denote a mixture of Gothic care to watch bands like Immortal when I get the all around the globe and invited each other to gigs and Metal styles, but later took on the meaning of chance at festivals.' Despite being a part of the in England.' At the beginning of the nineties the female fronted Metal. There can be no doubt that global tape-trading circle Paradise Lost quickly British underground is going through a golden age. “WE ARE LOOKING VERY MUCH FORWARD TO PLAY AT THE INFERNO FESTIVAL AND ARE GLAD WE WERE INVITED. IT IS A GREAT FEELING THAT WE ARE STILL CONSIDERED A RELEVANT BAND AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS. WE ARE ALSO QUITE AWARE OF WHAT THE PEOPLE THERE EXPECT FROM US, WHICH MEANS WE ARE GOING TO PLAY OUR MOST HEAVY SET. TAKE THAT FOR GRANTED!” – NICK HOLMES for combining Death Metal with elements inspired from Celtic Frost, Sisters of Mercy or Fields of the Nephilim.' The singer makes it sound quite simple to break new ground by mixing different styles, but to come up with a convincing formula, which changes the way of how music can be perceived, is no easy feat and a great creative achievement. 'At first only a few people did react positively to our new sound and a Dutch distributor even refused to release 'Gothic' at all', laughs Greg. 'We did not really know what we were doing, but we were aware that our experiment was leading to something literally unheard of. PARADISE LOST remained stunningly productive and again followed up with their third album "Shades of God" (1992) just one year later. 'We had become increasingly ambitious by then and unleashed a true riff-o-rama with this record', says Greg. 'Maybe this was a bit too early and too much. In hindsight it is quite strange that our at first least loved song 'As I Die' would then show us the path to continue on.' On the first pressing of "Shades of God" the English even left out "As I Die" as it appeared to be too awkward to them. Then again it is hard to stop a brilliant tune and from its release on the EP "As I Die" (1992) the song quickly gains popularity. 'Basically our next album 'Icon' was completely written around this song', admits the guitarist. Once again PARADISE LOST stick to their yearly release schedule, when they publish "Icon" in the year 1993. With this album the unruly bunch from Yorkshire finally had its international break-through and spearheaded a dark trend in Metal: Others like my Dying Bride, Moonspell or Tiamat follow suit and reduce their degree of hardness in favour of adding melancholic beauty and a more Gothic approach. Death Metal came under siege from two sides: In the North a more radical approach was conceived within the Black Metal circle, while in Western Europe the dark found a more subtle expression in the early Gothic Metal. 'It was probably only a lucky coincidence that 'Icon' came
out at exactly the right time', Greg continues to modestly downplay the importance of his band. 'At the time the whole scene was in a high spirit. There was a great feeling of community between all of us and Anathema or The Gathering played some of their first gigs opening for us.' Their growing success puts PARADISE LOST firmly on the road and by the time they enter the studio again directly after being on tour with "Icon" for nearly two years, the musicians have been away from their homes for a long time. 'Not getting a rest for the most part of five years was beginning to take its toll on our creativity', supposes Greg. 'As a result of this 'Draconian Times' sounds a lot like a more polished version of 'Icon' to me.' Although or maybe even because "Draconian Times" turns out to be the greatest commercial success for PARADISE LOST so far, they decide to drastically change their course.
Fall from Grace With their next release "One Second" (1997) the English include many more electronic parts at the expense of a distinct Metal sound. 'Well, some people was not happy with our development', agrees Greg, 'but we really needed to do have a break and make some changes.' Nick adds that the band did not expect the level of negativity that hit them. 'At least we did not make the mistake of turning to happy music', stresses the singer. 'We remained dark and miserable and then again it was a very creative phase for all of us.' Not everybody was disagreeing with the changes that PARADISE LOST went through. MTV suddenly picked up their videoclips and their sales remained on a high level. As many of their old friends turned their backs to them the band had found new followers in other camps. 'We had kicked a lot of people in their shins, but we are not creating music to please anybody', Greg points out, but Nick shows some sympathy: 'I can understand that Metal-fans do not want their bands to move out of the scene', claims the singer. 'I was
devastated too, when Iron Maiden started to use guitar-synthesizer. To me it felt like the end of one of my favourites. On the other hand it is important to try out something different and challenge oneself and others. I cannot understand any musician, who still sounds like he did twenty years ago.' Many of their early followers had written off PARADISE LOST as they continued on a path outside the confines of the hard genre until and including their tenth album "Paradise Lost" (2005). It came as quite a surprise, when "In Requiem" (2007) saw the Brits return to their roots. 'We had explored our style from 'One Second' onwards in every detail by then', declares Greg. 'Now, we felt like less polish and more evil bite again.' According to Nick the classical feeling of "In Requiem" also has a lot to do with the production. 'It is not so much a massive change in our songwriting', reckons the singer. 'We have just brought the guitars and harsh vocals back to the front.' The bands newly found pleasure in Metal is not only obvious, but continues to this day. 'We are just wrapping up our last songs for the next album', reveals Nick. 'The new material sounds even harder again and I can promise that is going to be as heavy as it can be. At the same time it is all about creating a good song and whatever people think of our previous albums, each of them taught us something new and important!' ow, PARADISE LOST are eager to return to Oslo as they have many good memories of previous concerts in Norway. 'We are looking very much forward to play at the INFERNO FESTIVAL and are glad we were invited. It is a great feeling that we are still considered a relevant band after all those years. There is only one slight problem: We are still looking for a new drummer, but no worries, there will be one with us come Easter. We are also quite aware of what the people there expect from us, which means we are going to play our most heavy set. Take that for granted!' Gunnar Sauermann

INFERNO MOMENT I last attended Inferno 2007, though I will also be attending this year 2009. I have to say my most memorable would be meeting Samoth and Trym of Zyklon/Emperor as I've been listening to either or band since I was 17 and back then I never thought I'd meet them in person, however I first saw Zyklon at Wacken 2005. Further I also got to meet Nattefrost, Niklas Kvarforth, Abbath, and Frost along with members of Dimmu Borgir. While attending the pre-Inferno thrash metal night at Club Maidens I had the chance to meet the legendary Frenriz and Grutle Kjellson although he was drunk without much a care to the world lol. I also have to say it was surreal to see Immortal play on home soil especially for their first reunion performance! Though it was somewhat comical the amplifiers had some technical problems and Abbath turned and got pissed only later to explain it out of a typical Immortal show
wouldn't be without some sort of technical problem happening. I should also mention running into Gaahl for 30seconds only to receive that dreaded stare he likes to serve! To meet all these crazy such demons was quite amazing to me just as them being normal people doing there thing that inspired me musically for so many years! Of course though meeting Kvarforth I admit it was my introduction to that of Shining! To rap up I would like to say the whole festival had great sound and I truly enjoyed how up close and personal things felt compared to many others shows I've seen. Only thing that sucked was being locked out of over capacitated performances as they were bands with more a following than the area provided.

"Ever since I attended my first Inferno festival back in 2002, it has been the arena for quite a lot of personal vicissitudes; some good, others bad, and some rather wet: Amongst other things I managed to get a taxi from the Rockefeller venue till Hotel Scandic Byporten to cost me about 800NOK. This is normally a few minutes walking distance. I have raided a bunch of mini bars with the drummer of Usurper; found myself in the suburban Lørenskog, with a limp and without a clue of where in the world I was. (I actually had to phone a friend who had played hockey there some years earlier to resolve the situation.) I have bought pebbles for the price of 500NOK, and thus have had to chase three youths down the street in a drunken frenzy when I found out! I have had 50/50 karsk(moonshine and coffee) with the guys in Perished – it resulted in me waking up at Slottsparken apart-

But maybe most importantly: I met the girl whom I would marry some years later. She has been to every festival since the start, except for last years edition when she was pregnant with what has since become the world's most adorable little lad. So I can thank Inferno for a lot of good shit over the years, and maybe also for my marriage and my son! Here's to Inferno and the butterfly effect! See you at the festival…" Pål Lystrup

A different and quite disturbing version of the old Frankenstein tale. This time Baron Frankenstein has a daughter (the lovely Miss Rosalba Neri) who continues his work after his death. But what kind of motive can a hot young lady have for creating a monster?
Le Moine was immediately banned in Norway, but has since then enjoyed a legendary status among cult film buffs as a beautiful, but strange taboo-breaker. Based on the famous book by Matthew Lewis, by many regarded as the foundation for the whole gothic genre.

BLÅ* Brenneriveien 9c
MØLLERS CAFÉ Mariboes gate
BLÅ is an independent club in Oslo for live, contemporary “jazz and related sounds.” It is a professional venue dedicated to up-and-coming acts from all over the country, while also hosting established international artists. BLÅ presents live performances for body, mind and sound system, almost every day of the week. Age Limit: 20 Years. www.blaaoslo.no
Situated on the corner one block away from the festival venue, this place will be packed throughout the weekend. Not only is it close to the venue - the beer is cold and cheap. Just be aware of the fact that this is not the classiest pub in downtown Oslo… They do have some decent stuff in their jukebox though!
GLORIA FLAMES Grønland 18 ROCKEFELLER MUSIC HALL* & JOHN DEE* Torggata bad Originally an indoor pool, Rockefeller opened as a music venue in 1986. There are 2 stages – Rockefeller, the main stage, has a capacity of about 1500, and downstairs you'll find John Dee with a 400+ capacity. Age Limit: 18 Years. www.rockefeller.no
SUB SCENE* Kirkegata 34 This all-ages venue also boasts a manga-café. This place does not serve alcohol, and has limited opening hours on 'normal' days. Age Limit: All ages! www.subscene.no
UNHOLY Dronningensgt. 22 Hard rock/metal every day from 4 PM www.unholy.no
REVOLVER* Møllergata 32 Just around the corner from Rockefeller/John Dee you’ll find this relatively new club – they offer great vegan/vegetarian food in addition to great burgers! GARAGE* Grensen 9 The rock place previously known as So What! – now one of the best rock pubs close to Rockefeller. A little hard to find, but remember you can always ask people in the street. Garage also have an outdoor area for enjoyment of refreshments and cigarettes. Age limit: 20 Years upstairs, 18 downstairs at the concert. www.garageoslo.no
ELM STREET Dronningens gate 32 The food is still worth the trip, and the management might let the bartenders play some metal during the Inferno week, despite the change in profile. Not the hottest place if you want to hear metal all the time, but if it's full of metalheads. During the festival days it tends to get back to the feel of 'old times'. www.elmstreet.no
NY-LON Arbeidergata A bar for the musically open-minded. You might hear anything from reggae to metal during your stay there. Fantastic bartenders and diverse music makes this an exellent alternative if you get sick of the metal pubs. Just a word of caution; money runs out REAL fast at this place!
ROCK IN* Øvre Slottsgate 10
TEDDYS SOFT BAR Brugata
In this dark sub-level club you can hear metal all the time, no matter who is working. Rock In plays everything metal, earlier they were known to play mostly traditional heavy metal and loads of stuff from the 80s, but during Infernoweek they amp up the extreme-factor… Age Limit: 20 Years. www.rockin.no
This place has kept its original decor from when it first opened in 1958, and here you can meet anybody. Rockabillys, media personalities, musicians - they all enjoy the milieu and great food Teddy's offer. Put some money on the Wurlitzer and breathe in the atmosphere! And it's only a 2minute walk from the festival venue.

Bands like Entombed, Cadaver, Danko Jones, Hellacopters etc. have played here over the years. www.lasttrain.no
EXPRESSEN Jernbanetorget One of the oldest pubs in downtown Oslo – I think a couple of the original guests are still there. Good mix of old sailors, drunks of all ages and it's the first pub you see when leaving Oslo Central train station. Opens at 8 am and has karaoke for the ones not quite satisfied with just watching bands at Inferno.

NO MONEY, MO’ PROBLEMS ATMs are plentiful in Oslo - there is one inside the venue, conveniently (sic!) placed right outside the toilets, under the stairs leading up to the gallery. Be sure to check that the ATM is the kind that takes VISA/Mastercard/AMEX, we have known people who lost their card into 'regular' debet card ATMs... If you need to cash travellers cheques etc., there is an exchange office at Oslo Central station, and if you have foreign currency in cash there is also an exchange-machine you can use 24/7. Remember that all 'normal' stores are closed on thursday and friday during easter - also that following monday. If you want to save some money on food and drinks, go to a grocery store and stock up on wednesday. There is a store right next to the Edderkoppen hotel - and also one at Oslo Central station that is a bit more expensive but that is open some hours during those holiest of days as well.

“IT [TRONDHEIM] HAS ALWAYS BEEN A CITY THAT WAS GREAT FOR MUSIC, BUT THE BANDS THERE LACKED A BELIEF IN THEIR WORK, TOOK A LONG TIME TO RELEASE ALBUMS OR STAYED AT HOME INSTEAD OF MAKING A NAME FOR THEMSELVES ON TOUR” – OBSIDIAN C.

KEEP OF KALESSIN HAVE SET OUT TO CHANGE THIS AND TO PUT THEIR HOMETOWN BACK ON THE MAP OF HEAVY MUSIC. MASTERMIND AND GUITARIST OBSIDIAN C. REVEALS HOW THE INFERNO FESTIVAL FITS INTO HIS PLANS FOR WORLD DOMINATION. y visions have always been far more ambitious than the current status of this band would actually seem to allow', tells Obsidian C. with a broad smile. 'The Inferno Festival offers us the perfect opportunity to present Keep of Kalessin in a way that reflects our concepts and ideas far better than usually possible. We are planning a big show with pyrotechnics, props and a lot of extras on stage. It is going to give people an impression of how all our concerts should look like – if we could afford it.' Big words and great promises, but Keep of Kalessin have always lived up to the high expectations, which they have generated so far. With a full hour playing

time, Obsidian also announces to add some rarely played songs to the set.
Burning Ambition "Think big!" could be the motto for every undertaking that Keep of Kalessin are currently embarking on. In order to record their latest album "Kolossus" (2008) the band did not simply go to a studio, but rather bought a share of it. As their Morningstar Studio is located in the musicians' hometown Trondheim, Obsidian C. and his collaborators were able to work long-term and concentrate on composing their songs instead of travelling long
distances. Their aim has been no lesser task than growing from the band's roots in Black Metal and taking that style much further and even beyond. 'It will probably need a while until people realise, what we are doing', opines the outstanding guitarist. 'Especially in a live-situation there is the danger of only noticing the harsh singing and blast-beats instead of the very different riffing that we use. We are still working on better bringing out the epic feeling of our songs on stage. We want to make it easier to get them for all those, who do not know our albums.' Either Keep of Kalessin are succeeding in their plans or they
have simply acquired a larger following that is more familiar with their songs as they continue to draw bigger crowds to their shows in Europe as well as in the United States. 'We are of course very happy to have such dedicated fans and receive their very good reactions, but we would like to give them even more and therefore practise hard to improve our performance', declares Obsidian C. and shows once again a burning ambition that fuels his visions.
Underground Kings It has not always been like that in the nearly sixteen years of Keep of Kalessin's existence. 'We were just too lazy in our early days', admits the guitarist, 'but that has changed.' His confession could be seen as symptomatic for the Metal scene in Trondheim. While Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger and even Kristiansand had their share of international successful acts, Trondheim seemed to lag behind. 'It has always been a city that was great for music, but the bands there lacked a belief in their work, took a long time to release albums or stayed at home instead of making a name for themselves on tour', states Obsidian. 'Our hometown has unique scene with highly original protagonists like Chton, Manes, Bloodthorn or Atrox, but we all lack in infra-structure and connections. This means that Keep of Kalessin is still part of the underground as we are from Trondheim.' His band is taking large steps of changing that. When Keep of Kalessin was reborn in 2003 after a four year break, Obsidian recruited drum-maniac Frost (1349, Satyricon) and Mayhem’s Attila Csihar contributed his enigmatic dark vocals on the EP "Reclaim", which captured immediate attention among critics and fans alike. It took another three years before the forth fulllength "Armada" (2006) followed. The guitarist had meanwhile exchanged his famous guests for highly talented local musicians in order to form a real band that was able to go on extended tours. Singer Thebon, bass-player Wizziac and Vyl on drums impressed with their skills at

the next shows, where many people did not even notice the change behind the drum-kit. With "Armada" Obsidian C. had begun to steer away from the classical Black Metal of previous years and set out on a new course that was based on his stunning skills as a guitarist adding a fiery and intricate riffing to the songs. The latest release "Kolossus" (2008) brought a continuation and refining of this new direction. Their growing reputation enabled Keep of Kalessin to play at se-

AFTER A PROLONGED BREAK, NATTEFROST AND HIS ROTTEN COMPANY ARE FINALLY RETURNING WITH A VENGEANCE TO DELIVER A VERY SPECIAL HEADLINER SHOW AT THIS YEAR'S INFERNO FESTIVAL: YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! attefrost's approach to his band and music Restless Natives has always been infernal, defiant and selfWhile CARPATHIAN FOREST appeared to be destructive. Whether the bandleader has inactive nearly all of last year, the band was actuemployed rather aged and potbellied go-goally preparing to go to studio again. 'We have dancers for the recording of a concert-DVD, finished most of the pre-production with some puked live on stage and straight into the camera songs contributed by me, Tchort and Blood in front of ten thousands of spectators at the Pervertor', claims Nattefrost. 'Some material goes back to the recording of 'Fuck You All !!!!', when Wacken Festival or allowed pictures to be taken we ran out of time and had to leave a lot of exof him covered in his own shit – he has certainly always done it in his very cellent but unfinished ideas beown downright dirty and hind.' It has always been a tradegritty black-dandy style. Not “AN EXTREME CHARACTER LIKE ME mark of the singer to dig out surprisingly all kind of some riffs, melodies and lyrics, rumours have been floating WILL ALWAYS ATTRACT RUMOURS which sometimes go back for around for the last three years and have been buried on years as CARPATHIAN NOT MATTER IF TRUE OR FALSE. old tapes and sketchbooks. lyrics than deal with an imaginary world of dreams although I have occasionally quoted from the scriptures. The song 'Christian Incoherent Drivel' is based on John's 'Revelation' for example.' Religiously inclined people are obviously not going to attend the show.
Live after Death 'There would be riots, if of some Christian or other fanatics were trying to take our Easter party in Oslo away from us', promises Nattefrost. 'We are a part of this country and proud of it – although we are usually anti-everything. At least nobody will confuse this with some stupid right-wing agenda in our case.' To get that party started CARPATHIAN FOREST have some aces up their sleeve: 'I do not want to spoil the fun by giving away too much, but we will deliver a very special show for this event as we are all hungry to get out again after this long break', hints the singer at things to come. 'On top of the usual sick shit we have invited some great guests to join us on stage. And as I was tired to play the same old classics that everybody is shouting for, we are going to perform a lot of songs which we have never included in a set ever before.' Nattefrost is particularly proud to have been offered a headlining position. This is well deserved as CARPATHIAN FOREST were founded as early as 1990 and have kept the faith delivering brutally honest Black Metal ever since, while slowly but surely gaining critical acclaim as well as popularity without selling out. 'To be finally recognised as a major band sure feels good', delights Nattefrost in this honour. 'And it is about damn time for that!' Whatever will happen at their Inferno show, rest assured that these goddamn bastards are going to kick your ass! Gunnar Sauermann

“I was at your Inferno festival in 2005. I'm an Aussie guy and was so enchanted by the chunk selection of bands you get together that i had to go... I saw Arcturus play there that year, and I was sitting down and Hellhammer came by! So I said hello to him and we had a chat! He is an absolute champion of a drummer, and a really nice down to earth bloke... The amount of music he has been making and or involved in is incredible!!
INFERNO MOMENT So keep doing your thing Inferno!! you seriously know how to rock!! Cheers & Regards James McDermott”

“WE RECEIVE A LOT OF INTEREST IN OUR LYRICS ESPECIALLY FROM GERMANY. THEY UNDERSTAND THE NEED TO DEAL WITH HISTORY VERY WELL AND KNOW THAT WE DO NOT HOLD A GRUDGE AGAINST GERMANS” -HVALL
BORN OUT OF TRAGEDY, VREID HAVE RISEN OUT OF THE ASHES OF WINDIR AND FOUND THEIR VERY OWN WAY SINCE 2004. CREATING A UNIQUE BLEND OF NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL AND DOWN TO EARTH ROCK'N'ROLL THIS PITCH BLACK BRIGADE MEANWHILE GAINED A DEDICATED FOLLOWING WORLDWIDE. WITH "I KRIG" (2007) AND CURRENTLY "MILORG" THE TROOPERS FROM SOGNDAL HAVE BASED TWO ALBUMS ON THE RESISTANCE IN NORWAY DURING WWII. t is a dark night on the 9th of April, when a giant shadow glides slowly into the Oslo Fjord. It belongs to the heavy cruiser Blücher as Nazi-Germany has just begun its "Operation Weserübung" ("Weser Exercise") to occupy Norway. The ship's main armament is aligned to fore and aft as Rear Admiral Oskar Kummetz does not expect any serious resistance. He is about to be proved wrong. As Blücher nears the Drøbak Sound, where the fjord has its most narrow passage, the ship is illuminated by searchlights. At 04:21 hours the three 28 cm guns of the Oscarsborg Fortress on South Kaholmen Island open fire at nearly point blank range with other coastal batteries following. The shells immediately wreak havoc on Blücher and the cruiser's fate is finally sealed, when hit by torpedoes from a nearby battery on North Kaholmen Island. All attempts by its commander Kapitän zur See Heinrich Woldag to run his ship aground fail. At 06:22 Blücher capsizes and sinks, taking 830 men of the 2,202 crew and troops on board with her into a wet grave at 90 metres depth. As a result the invasion of Oslo is delayed long enough for the Royal family and the legitimate Norwegian government to escape to exile in England.

Freedom Fighters 'The sinking of the Blücher inspired many Norwegians to join the resistance', explains VREID'S bassplayer Hváll, who has taken a university degree in history. 'As the major organised act of resistance at the very beginning of the occupation, this action obviously needed to be turned into a song on our concept-album about the Milorg.' "Milorg" is an abbreviation of Militær Organisasjon ("Military Organisation") the largest Norwegian resistance movement during World War II. Despite all the glorification and posthumous heroism attached to an event like this, which became a shining beacon in the struggle for freedom, VREID see more than one side to this story. 'The instrumental 'Blücher Pt. 2' is
being finished with their musical creativity and dealing with the terrible loss of life at war', relates formed VREID together with guitarist Ese. With Hváll. 'Even in the hour of victory the sight of bodies Valfar gone it was obvious to the remaining musicifloating in the ice-cold waters or people burning ans that they had to take another direction away alive in the ship's oil-spill and their horrible screams from all the Vikings and medieval battles that Windir left an empty feeling in the memories of the defendhad already dealt with. 'Our first album 'Kraft' was ers.' It is clearly not VREID's aim to settle old scores quite an experiment', admits Hváll. 'We broke eveor tear open barely healed wounds still alive within rything down to its core and rebuild from scratch.' the younger generations. In the opinion of the giant As every members of VREID loves extreme Metal as bass-player the telling of those stories from the past well as Rock'n'Roll, their combined music makes is rather bringing people together then taking them use of elements from both directions, which became apart. GEAR YOURSELF UP! ………………. AT THE INFERNO METAL EXPO
nce again the exhibition and trade part of the festival is taking place at Sentrum Scene, the next door venue of Rockefeller. As before you’ll find various stands and exhibitions, activities and happenings at the Metal Expo. New this year is that all the stands and exhibitions will be located at Sentrum Scene. The reason for this is to get more space at the Rockefeller venue complex, for relaxation and a chance to chill out between the concerts. It also seemed like a good idea to gather all trade in one place. The expo is now open until 20:00 (that’s 8 pm). This years Inferno exhibitors includes Lucky 7 Tattoos with special guest tattoo artists from Spain and USA. Our Dutch friends Goddess of Desire is bringing their spikes and merchandise back, more t-shirts and caps from Swedish Texas Clothing. Expect some gothic fashion from Darklands and extreme hair & stying from Adam & Eva. Riff provides simply the best musical equipment along with instrument clinics. American Vendetta shows the amazing poster art of Christian Sloan Hall, directly from his medieval castle somewhere in Scotland.

In 2009 you can get yourself and your gear signed by Paradise Lost, Keep of Kalessin and many more. Remember only one item signed and please don’t expect all artists to talk to your friends on your mobile phone.
mAlice in Wonderland No expo without performance artists, this year we have some mad circus puppets for you. In their own words; “MAD circus puppets is a “grrrlish” performing group since 2008. Pretty young, but already well known, sexy & provocative theatrical group that surprise the audience, who actually participate to each show without knowing exactly what’s going on! Always new and unpredictable performances, MAD circus puppets have a nucleus of 3 unconventional girls and, now and then, the group expands”. At the expo they will perform “mAlice in Wonderland”: the real story (not) for children…never before told!” You’re hereby warned!
