Pettersen Editor & writer: Runar PettersenDeathbarrel were spawned in a Norwegian prison back in 2012. Naturally we’re talking about outlaw country music here. The real thing so to speak. Deathbarrel is a moving, living, fornicating, hard drinking foot stomping shindig of a band, feasting on harsh winters, harsher women and lethal amounts of bourbon.
With its dark and eerie vibe, pitch black humour and kerosine breath, Deathbarrel slithers its way through damp swamps, cold mountains, grey courtrooms and sweaty bayous and fjords!

Kim Diaz Holm from Bergen, Norway will be present at the "Leiligheten" on the top floor at the Rockefeller venue. There he will draw, communicate, and show his works once more. We had a lot of feedback that his art stand was one of the highlights at Inferno. He will be present, this time as well, at the scene to make his impressions of the ongoing concerts. Look for him at the top floor or near a scene drawing like a madman.
David Thiérrée will once again present his work at Inferno. It's like with popular bands, some artists tend to visit more than once. For those who still don't know him or his art, we can tell he has some deep roots in the way of creating highly intricate pencil drawings. Often in the dark and murky ways. He has worked with Mork, Mortiis, Behemoth, Manes, Gorgoroth, Satanic Warmaster and many others. So, keep an eye out for him at the Rockefeller venue.
Elisa Halvorsen Castillo is a Chilean artist with Norwegian ancestry. Established in Oslo after finishing a MFA at The Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHIO). Her practice is based on The Expanded Field. Using various techniques such as jewellery-making, printmaking, drawing, and analogue photography, the artist explores the concept of Memory and its plasticity, a subject that interests her since she experienced short-term memory loss due to a period of illness in her mid 20’s.
Stop by and meet Meri the Zu, one of the most hardcore eclectics, and exciting street artists in Romania. In an EEA-funded project with our friends at ARTmania festival, Meri will be live drawing something big enough to stop you, strange enough to hypnotize you, manic enough to scare you a little. And in truth, if it doesn't scare a little, what business would it have here, among the brave and dissimilar? Check her out on www.merithezu.com.

- PANEL DEBATE WITH THE MAKERS AND MUSICIANS FROM THE DOCUMENTARY
- PANEL DEBATE WITH THE MAKERS AND MUSICIANS FROM THE DOCUMENTARY
This documentary from NRK takes you on a journey through the history of Norwegian black metal from the early eighties trough musical innovation, image building, murder, suicide and church burnings, and international recognition. With more focus on the history of the music and people involved, rather than just the scandals – this is a mini-series that handles the subject with respect and understanding.
We will screen the complete documentary with English subtitles. After the documentary curator, writer and black metal enthusiast Finn Håkon Rødland will lead us
through a panel debate and a Q&A with the makers and participants of the documentary for an hour. Several musicians from the early scene will participate – like Marius Vold (Mortem, ex-Thorns, ex-Arcturus) and Torben Grue (ex-Mayhem, ex-Vomit). This will be the definitive deep dive into the history of Norwegian black metal.
Clarion The Hub Hotel. Movie 12.00 – 15.00.
Panel debate 15.00 – 16.00.

Our vision of a modern Italian trattoria reflects a menu that changes depending on the season and the availability of the ingredients.
Our in-house beer sommelier selects carefully craft beer pairings with all the dishes. And as natural for an Italian menu, we curate a unique range of mostly organic wines. During The Inferno Festival we turn our house into an Inferno restaurant, and welcome you all to drop by between the shows. Looking forward to seeing you.

Baard recalls playing what he described as one of his first professional shows with Borknagar at the Inferno Metal Festival in 2012. In the last decade, he has played with many well-renowned artists. ICS Vortex, Solefald, God Seed, Gaahls Wyrd and Ihsahn. Many of the shows have been at the Inferno Metal Festival. We are proud to have him back to do a drum clinic on rhythmic mastery.
The name Baard Kolstad is firmly cemented within the international drumming landscape. Renowned for his explosive, frenetic, yet precise techniques (in addition to his trademark topless showmanship), Baard is a reputable
and relevant drummer across various musical genres. Starting as a street drummer and YouTube sensation in his teens, he has established himself through international touring and frequent album releases with progressive rock/metal act Leprous and Rendezvous Point. Winner of the 2012 V-drums world championship in LA, Baard is a mainstay of both the Norwegian and world music scene and his skills are second to none.

A word from the upcoming and growing festivals in the world, insight in conducting their own profile and artistic decisions to enforce this growth. What choices do you make as a festival? What are the USP’s and how do you connect to your audience?
The Metaverse is a digital environment that has recently been gaining traction, but what is it really? Is it simply big tech's ploy to gain access to more user data and sell it to advertisers, or is it an innovative space that has potential benefits for bands, musicians, and their fans?
The second wave: the influence of Masacre (CO)
After 30 years, Masacre might be the most solid Colombian death metal band around. During the early days of extreme metal, the music was chaotic and destructive. Many bands took it upon themselves to do everything in their power to deviate from all other genres.
Mutilated Tyrant: a conversation about the Navajo black metal scene
Interview with Navajo band Mutilated Tyrant. Mod: Harald Fossberg (NO)
Gripped by the Soul of Spiritual Awakening
– a presentation about black metal from the Low Countries
How do divergent uses of black metal aesthetics and cultural narratives differ between Norwegian and Dutch-speaking Low Countries bands, and in what ways do these uses have different outcomes and meanings?
Greener Touring II: merchandise
Touring sustainably is a goal for many bands, but one of the main challenges lies in distributing merchandise in an eco-friendly manner. But just how can bands and festivals promote themselves
in a way that is kind to the environment? What measures need to be taken to make sure that merchandise is distributed with the least possible impact on the environment?
Presales – what are we going to do about it?
The pressure point of 2022, the change of average ticket sales in specific markets. We are all wondering what the reason for this could be and for some, this is a challenge that needs to be solved.
When searching online for how to prevent a burnout, the first thing you will find is to bring more passion into your work. Working in the music business, Hilde Spille sees that most people work with passion, but many of them end up getting a burnout.
Career Talk: Sakis Tolis
Athanasios "Sakis" Tolis, a.k.a. Necromayhem, is best known as guitarist/vocalist for the Greek band Rotting Christ. Reading this, you would say, busy enough with this band. Yet, the opposite is true. Although Sakis is one of the founding members of Rotting Christ, together with his brother, he found the time to record solo material.
With the developments in distributing digital music, the ways how fans show their commitment to a band are more and more broadly based between the physical and the digital world. How do we still reach the people in a more personal matter and create long lasting fan relationships?
Being outside in a 20th century summer season will bring challenges in all possible ways. Protect yourself against the sun, but also against heavy rain and following mud. How do open air festivals deal with maybe 3 or sometimes 4 seasons of weather in a single 4-day edition of a heavy metal festival?
Boutique Indoor Festivals
– the new tendency?
Indoor boutique festivals. A new trend, or not? What’s the buzz? And is it even worthwhile to run an indoor event like that?
What are the pros and cons? Challenges and opportunities?
Thirty Years of Hate: black metal and subcultural developments in Turkey from 1990-2020
Black metal, one of the most extreme subgenres of metal, have been a part of Turkish underground culture since the early 1990’s. Since the genre’s inception in Europe during the 1980’s and particularly the 1990’s in Norway, it’s esthetical and lyrical focus have revolved around blasphemy, satanism, violence, and a critical stance towards Abrahamitic faiths.
Countless Adventures: Jenny Douglas, 5BAM on Life on the road
Join Frank Godla (US), Metal Injection, as he interviews Jenny Douglas(US), Touring Director at 5BAM, about her 18 years of experience as a Front of House Engineer and Tour Manager. Jenny has done all aspects of touring and provides a unique perspective on the inner workings of the touring music industry. Frank will delve into her experiences on the road with King Diamond, Mercyful Fate, Amon Amarth, Behemoth, Trivium, Napalm Death and discuss her current role as Touring Director at 5BAM. 5BAM is an artist management company with bands like Megadeth, Slipknot, Behemoth, Lam of god, King Diamond and more. On the event side, 5BAM organizes Knotfest, Megacruise, Megadeth boot camp and The Slaughter House.
Ticketmaster asked 2 million Norwegians about their financial situation and thoughts about the live scene for 2023. An interesting
presentation of the survey results, providing a clear insight in actual socio-economic values and standards.
You'll get a list of songs and of course, all of them are metal, some of them will also be from bands playing at the festival this year. There will be several prizes that you can win, so let's put your musical ear to the test.
Metalheads Against Bullying – a Norwegian, and worldwide known organization, with the sole purpose to empower the people in the
fight against bullying. Bullying exists in all walks of life and many of us have painfully experienced this on our bodies.
The Inferno Metal Auction, is hosted by Tore Bratseth of the beloved Motörhead cover band, Bömbers (NO). The auction is a highly anticipated and humorous event that will take place in the lobby bar at the festival hotel. Besides rare and legendary items from the extreme metal scene, the auction will also include a very
special package, consisting of a hotel room and festival passes for 2 people. The total value is around 9500NOK. Past auctions have included mentionable items such as Abbath's signed leather boot from the 1993 "Fuck Christ" tour, a cymbal used on Mayhem's "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas," and even Fenriz's acoustic guitar.
The 2023 auction promises to be just as entertaining as past years, though it remains to be seen what items will be up for sale. One thing is for sure! you don't want to miss your chance to bid on the hotel room and festival passes package!
