community and is a positive factor for deciding to invest in SCAL.

Hello Friends, I am often asked, why people must obey rules that seem ridiculous to t h e i n q u i r e r. T h e s e questions range from: Why do they have to keep their garage door closed? Why can't they leave their garbage and recycle bins out at the street before 6 p.m.? And Why is landscaping so “knit-picky,” and why is it not enforced uniformly? The simple answer is you agreed to our Rules and Regulations when you decided to live in Sun City and each of these issues is addressed in our governing documents. Each of these issues is outlined in our CC&Rs or Design Guidelines. Garage doors are a constant violation and leaving them open is an invitation to critters, as well as those people who would potentially do you harm. In addition, keeping garage doors closed gives our community a consistent look which helps to add to the beauty of Sun City. Complaints abound about putting garbage out at the curb before 6 p.m. Once again, it is explained in our CC&Rs. A common statement from those looking at potential homes for purchase is “how neat and clean” our community appears. This encourages buyers to look deeper into our

Lastly, the Design Guidelines outline the requirements for clean and well cared for the front, rear and side landscaping. In doing so, it creates a positive curb appeal and tells others that we value our property, and we are proud to be part of this community. There is nothing more powerful than telling others that this is a wonderful place to live, and we prove it through our actions. Violators of our landscaping code are reminded that they need to take remedial action. If the infraction is not corrected, they are called to hearing where possible sanctions can be applied. As we value your privacy, we are not allowed to discuss others who are in possible violation. That means that you will never know if any action is being taken against others; so, it is completely unfair to believe that we are picking on you, while others are ignored. I can assure you; a great deal of effort is applied to cite ALL who are in violation. The eye appeal of our community is a major enticement for all of us as well as future home buyers. Thank you all for being good neighbors.

Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller President, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

BOARD MESSAGE The Sun City Aliante Website – by the numbers! Do you have an account on the Sun City Aliante website (suncityaliante.org)? If so, great; go on to number 1 below. If not (or if you're not sure), you are missing out on a lot, so open your preferred browser, enter suncityaliante.org into the search or address box and get started by clicking on the “Register” link at the top of the website. After clicking the “Register” link, fill Wayne Headrick, Secretary in the requested information and click the “Continue” button at the bottom of the form. When your information has been confirmed (you wouldn't believe how many people outside of our Community try to register for an account), you will receive an email with your initial Username and a link that will allow you to set up your Password. If you had an account on the old website, but don't remember your Username and/or Password, don't worry; the Communications Committee member that handles your request will assume your current information is at least as good as that submitted a year (or 5, 6, … years) ago and will use your new information.

1. Logging into the website is as easy as 1) click on the “Login” link at the top of the website, 2) enter your Username, 3) enter your Password and 4) click on the big green “Submit” button. Note that you can click on the “Remember Me” check box and the Username should be automatically included the next time you go to the website. 2. NOW WHAT? If you are logging into the website for the first time, be sure to click on the “Your Profile” link at the top-right of the web page and customize your Username, Password and other information as you see fit. Once you have your information like you want it, you are ready to explore the website. 3. The first thing to recognize is that any time you click on the “Home” menu link you will return to the entry point, so you can't get lost. The second most important thing to know is that when you put your “mouse pointer” on the “Magazine” menu link you will be able to see the current copy of the Breeze and/or a list of the current advertisers. This is particularly important for renters who don't receive the Breeze or those of us who manage to lose it before getting it read. 4. Moving on to the other menu links, most of the “action” is found under the “Resources” menu link. The Calendar shows almost everything that's happening in our Community, and you can select any one of six categories of calendar entries to narrow your search. Because it is updated as soon as an update/change is given to the Lifestyle Director, it is the place to look for the most up-to-date information available. If you'd like to know what particular clubs and special interest groups do, when they meet, Clubs is the place to look. If you'd like to see them “in action” check out the Video Gallery where many clubs and special interest groups have posted short videos or the Photo Gallery where they post photos from their events. If you would like your organization featured, contact the Communications Committee to get started. If you are looking to buy, sell, borrow or loan something within the Community, the Classifieds is for you. The “Resources” menu link also includes links to the Community Address Book, Staff Directory and other items of interest. 5. If you would like to send an email to the Board of Directors, read their individual bios, view the three most recent Board Meeting Agendas and/or Minutes, go to the “Board/Committees” menu link. The same menu link will give you information about the various Standing Committees, including the purpose of each Committee, their current membership, meeting schedule and even the form you can use to apply to become a member of a Committee. 6. If you have trouble sleeping at night, going to the “Documents” menu link will give you access to the Community's Governing Documents, Resolutions passed by the Board, Policies and Guidelines, Commonly Used Forms, and Fees and Miscellaneous Policies. These documents are the basic documents under which Sun City Aliante runs; so, they are important, even if reading them can be a little boring. 7. If you want to contact the Webmaster or a specific office within Sun City Aliante, simply click on the “Contact Us” menu link, select the desired office, fill in the requested information and click the big green “Submit” button. Your request for information and/or assistance will be sent to the applicable office. 8. Going beyond the menu links, you will see several links to additional bits and pieces of information; information that is available to the public – so your friends back home can get a basic feel for the great place in which you live. First, you will probably notice a 10-image slide show that highlights our Community. Below it, you will see a short blurb on our Community and, to the right, three little blue boxes (yes, that's what we call them) that provide links to Emergency Contacts, News Flashes and What's New on the Website. The What's New link can be customized to allow you to see only what has changed since the last time you looked. Continue on Page 7

WE ARE...

COMMUNITY MGR FROM YOUR COMMUNITY MANAGER Dear Residents, I want to express my heart-felt appreciation and thanks to the team members for all the hard work they have done and continue to do during the Expansion and Enclosure Project. Our Lifestyle Team, working under the leadership and guidance of Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent, includes Front Desk Associates – Lori Daniels (Office Manager), Damian Carrasco Elaine Goddard, Fran Klein, Kotch Bergman, Jan Davis and Angie Stepp (who was welcomed to the team in July) and Assistant Lifestyle Director and The Breeze Editor, Trish Williamson. Our Maintenance Team, led by Facilities Manager Juan Macias, includes Angel Martinez, Sharon Roe, Jose Vargas, Alonso Ledesma and Charlene Weddle (who was welcomed to the team in June).

As the “go-to” place for handling the day-to-day HOA needs of residents, the Administrative Team is busy welcoming and registering new residents, issuing Community Center cards, accepting payments of quarterly assessments and working with homeowners about ARC (Architectural Review Committee) procedures. Whether they are assisting residents with their accounts, sending out courtesy letters or reviewing ARC applications, the Administrative Team does it with efficiency and a positive attitude with the residents' needs first in mind. Collectively, our team members represent 105 years of dedicated, loyal service to Sun City Aliante. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing, hard-working team, who truly loves their jobs and has great admiration and respect for residents and each other. Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

continued from page 6

Our Administrative Team includes Assistant Manager and Director of Compliance Nelenie Aronce and Customer Service Coordinator Carol Garbarino, who works under the direction of Nelenie. Friendly, positive, passionate and flexible are a few words that describe the Front Desk Team in the Lifestyle Department. They have nearly 9,000 resident interactions each month and close to 100,000 opportunities to take care of residents each year. They are busy all-day registering residents for shows, events, fitness classes, and seminars, answering phones and assisting with events. Their job is much more challenging now, as they are based in the hallways due to the construction project, but they do it with a smile and amazing dedication and caring. In addition to planning fabulous events, the department has established partnerships with major entertainment companies to enhance offerings, has expanded The Breeze to 44 pages and has secured additional advertisers. Our Maintenance Team members are “Unsung Heroes,” who work from 4 a.m. into the late evening to maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and service. They face heightened challenges with the construction in ensuring set up and break down of events, keeping the facilities clean and following city, state and federal laws. The team also troubleshoots for anything and everything from plumbing leaks to repairing tile. They did an amazing job moving team members to their current locations and packing up, moving and storing furniture from the rooms affected by the project. The team is helpful, kind, considerate and resourceful, as they work quickly in responding to the needs of residents and team members.

9. Further down on the Home Page, you'll find links to the most recent Weekly eBlasts sent out via email (if you aren't receiving them in email form, go to the “Your Profile,” select “Update Profile” and change the selection to “Yes” at the bottom of the page). You will also find information on homes for sale and rent within the Community (in case your friends up in the frozen north have had enough or you are looking for investment opportunities), and updates on the current status of the Community Center construction effort. As you reach the bottom of the Home Page, you'll see information on the location of the Community Center and its hours of operation and, finally, a map that you can click on to go to Google Maps and search for the usual nearby restaurants, bars and pubs, etc. As you can see, there is a wide variety of information regarding what's going on in and around Sun City Aliante found in the website. If you want to know what is happening within the Community, the Sun City Aliante website is the place to go! Wayne Headrick Secretary, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

We are on schedule with the Expansion and Enclosure Project. The concrete foundation was poured on July 1 and it is complete. During these 30 days, a lot of work will be done offsite coordinating and finalizing materials to be delivered in order to begin the build back process. When work resumes, they will start the framing and steel installation. The Hours of Operation have changed at the Community Center to the following: Monday-Saturday - 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday – 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Residents are requested to vacate the building 15 minutes prior to closing time; so, the building can be cleaned and secured. The Front Entrance to the SCAL Community Center is closed. You cannot access the Community Center through this entrance until the project is completed. Back Entrance Closed – You cannot access the Community Center via the pathway behind the building at the intersection of Lintwhite and Lanneret.

The Library and Computers are not available for use as they will be relocated. The Conference Room is available for normal use for scheduled meetings. The Veteran's Memorial has been relocated. The bike rack has been relocated to the Bocce Ball court area. Throughout the project, we will provide frequent updates in the eBlast, The Breeze magazine and on the new website (suncityaliante.org), including where we are, what's affected, what's next and new timelines as they develop. You can now obtain comprehensive information on the new website. On the bottom of the home page of the site, there is a dedicated section called “Caution, Work in Progress” that contains an animated video showing the design concept and the current timeline. We appreciate your patience throughout the duration of this construction project. We are confident you will be excited about the changes we are making for a larger and more attractive Community Center.

Signage is now located on the Community Center building to identify all three entrances and which activities you can access at these entrances. The Front Desk has two locations (just outside the Social Hall and at the entrance to the Swimming Pool) for the duration of the construction project. Lifestyle Associates are relocated to these areas to assist you. Main Entrance - Swimming Pool/Sauna/Spa & Fitness Area/Fitness Studio – To access these areas, you must enter through the gate at end of the building. Then you proceed through the double doors to the building. This is the only access for anyone who needs the assistance of a wheelchair or a walker. We have Lifestyle Associates stationed at this entrance to assist you with scanning your membership cards for seminars, the pool area and the fitness area/classes and purchasing tickets for entertainment events. Social Hall & Craft Rooms – To access the Social Hall/Craft Rooms, enter the double doors to the right of the Social Hall (opposite the tennis courts). Please remember you will only enter this door if you attend an activity in the Social Hall or the Craft Rooms. Lifestyle Associates are stationed at this entrance to assist you with scanning your membership cards for seminars, events and club activities and purchasing tickets for entertainment events. Effective through the duration of the construction, The Social Hall entrance door is open Monday - Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Hello SCAL residents! I hope the summer has been fabulous to you so far. I would like to take a moment to thank the community for being patient with the change on the assessment payment amount and mailing address. If you still have questions and/or concerns, please don't hesitate to give our office a call or contact me via email. Reminders for this issue: If you are thinking of changing the color schemes of your home, you must submit a Home Improvement Application to the ARC. However, if you're opting to paint it with the existing color schemes, then there is NO need to submit an application. Please visit Carol in the Customer Service Office to see the approved color schemes for the community. Moreover, paint vendors must be reminded that any advertising material may not be placed anywhere on the property unless they are doing work. No advertising signs shall be left overnight on the property. If you have overgrown trees in the backyard encroaching onto adjacent properties, they must be trimmed. Overgrown trees or shrubs hanging onto the sidewalk or mailboxes also must be trimmed. Please be courteous to your neighbors. An exterior solar panel conduit must be installed from the roof down on the utility side of the dwelling unit and must be painted to match the base color of the dwelling unit to maintain community aesthetics. There are local solar installation companies willing to paint the conduits for free if the homeowner provides the paint. In addition, consider installing deterrents to protect your solar panels and your roof from birds. Examples include bird mesh, plastic predators or roof spikes. Birds are attracted to the solar panels for climate protection and to nest. Birdbgone.com stated, “Birds cause hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to solar panels. When birds build nests under solar panels, they attract other pests, such as squirrels and rodents.” It seems it would be prudent to invest in protecting your solar panels. Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this community. I'm thankful to be part of the management team. Have a wonderful August!

Fitness Programs With the overwhelming response to Chair Yoga by Fitness Instructor Fara Abbasian, class size will be limited to 20 participants, first-come, first-served. Safety is our number one priority, and we want everyone to have a safe environment when enjoying this popular class! Because of the demand, Fara will be offering this class again, immediately after the first class as an alternative, so that residents won't miss her class. Chartered Clubs & Special Interest Groups Thank you to those who have submitted their rosters and financial statements. For those who have not, please submit to me a.s.a.p. Sun City Aliante has made a positive impression with the “Entertainment Capital of the World” and continues to enjoy all that it offers!

Reminder: Trash pickup is every Tuesday and bulk pick-up dates for the month are August 13 and August 27. Please don't place your garbage cans at the curb earlier than 6 p.m. on Mondays, and please remove them no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. FUN FACT: Birds can do some pretty amazing things. For example, frigate birds (Fregata minor) can sleep while flying thanks to the fact that they can snooze while using only one hemisphere of the brain at a time, according to the National Audubon Society. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or email assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us Nelenie Aronce Assistant Manager, Director of Standards & Compliance

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

Meet Wanda Tacey… Our New Veterans Chair

Veterans Club Chair Wanda Tacey addresses the audience during the event honoring Sun City Aliante resident Jim Parker for his military service. Photo by: L.E. Baskow/Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Getting people i n v o l v e d , delegating and recruiting… these are some goals Wanda Tacey set as she assumed her new role as Chair of the Veterans Club of Sun City Aliante. She became involved with the Veterans Club when she moved to Sun City Aliante in 2011, right after Sy Nielson founded the club. Over the years, she has served in several positions.

Wanda attended Fresno State College, where she graduated with a B.S. in Nursing and attended San Jose State University, where she earned an M.S. in Community Health Nursing. Wanda joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve, Nurse Corps in 1969 and served on Active and Reserve Duty during the Vietnam and Desert Storm Eras. She later transferred to the US Air Force Reserve and retired in 1997 as a Lt. Colonel after serving 28 years.

By Trish Williamson again. Perhaps, people thought, 'They are doing such a great job, I couldn't do it as well; so, why should we step up?'" added Wanda. Wanda and her team are working hard to turn things around. They have new ideas to excite more people to join and participate. "At our monthly meetings, we recognize new members and ask them to introduce themselves, and at the end of the meeting they leave," Wanda explained. "How about inviting them to come up, shaking their hand, thanking them for coming and asking them how they would like to get involved? In the military, you have a sponsor who meets and welcomes you, why can't we do the same. Let's use this model." In addition, Wanda has asked Sy Nielson to chair a new committee and recruit new people to work with him to consider whether the club should raise the existing Veterans Monument or do something completely different after the construction on the Community Center is completed. She is also working to overcome another challenge. "I think a common misperception is that people can't join the club unless they are veterans. That simply is not true," noted Wanda. While many club members are veterans or have government service, the club welcomes everyone who is a resident of Sun City Aliante. "I would like to get more people involved, especially women veterans. We have women in the Auxiliary, who are veterans too, but are not members of the Veterans Club," she noted.

As the new chair, she brings to this position a wealth of education and experience in managing and teaching people how to work with systems, delegating and interfacing with other entities. When she was not on active or reserve duty, Wanda's nursing career was focused on working for home health and hospice non-profits and major medical centers, such as Kaiser Permanente and the Palo Alto Medical Center. After serving as Vice Chair of the Veterans Club on two occasions, she decided to accept the position of Chair at the urging of fellow veterans. "I knew Sy Nielson wanted to step away and people asked me if would run," said Wanda. "However, I am a firm believer in term limits for anyone. After two years, it's time to move along." Right after her election, she held a meeting of the newly Elected Board to discuss their new responsibilities. "Everyone was very supportive and in agreement that our responsibilities should be delegated among the Board and more club members," Wanda said. "Our biggest challenge is to get more people involved and to get them out of the mindset of sitting back and letting the same few people do everything. The people who started this club brought it to the great level it is now. But it has been the same people doing it over and over

Through recruitment and hard work, Wanda and her team are endeavoring to build a spirit of comradery, leadership and teamwork among the members of the Veterans Club. "Right now, about 10 percent of our members do 100 percent of the work. We hope to turn that around," she said. "We want more people to participate and have a voice in where we are going and what we are doing. We need everyone's input." Why not consider becoming a member of the Veterans Club and joining in on the fun.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY TIP: An Open

Garage Door NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

To a criminal your open garage door is an “opportunity crime.” The next time you discover an open garage door you might find your golf clubs, new bicycle, tools, car, ___ (you fill in the rest) have been stolen. And looking at the worst-case scenario, you might find an intruder has entered your home through an unlocked door from the garage to your house, and that person(s) is threatening you and your loved ones in a robbery situation.

During May, the Neighborhood Watch Patrol reported 55 open garage doors during their night patrols. Of that number, they were able to contact 32 owners who promptly closed their doors. The remaining 23 owners either could not be reached or a very few decided to take their chances.

When the patrol contacts a homeowner with an open garage door, they are most often thanked profusely for the reminder. The weather is getting hotter, and doors are being left open to try to bring down the temperature in the garage. But then the door is forgotten, and soon the homeowner is watching TV or getting ready for bed. The criminal searching our community for an “opportunity” thinks BINGO! The Sun City Aliante Ve t e r a n s C l u b h a s information about a Garage Door Monitor device which will notify you when the door is open. Call or email Sy Nielson at 702-234-9183 or synlo@yahoo.com, and he can provide you with vendor contact information. The North Las Vegas Police Department has put together a reminder door sign that we have included for your information. You, the homeowner, are responsible for closing your garage door. The Neighborhood Watch Patrol effort represents the concern that we, your neighbors, have for you, our neighbors. Don't let a simple forgetful moment put your home or person in harm's way. For information regarding the Sun City Aliante N e i g h b o r h o o d Wa t c h Program, contact our Coordinator, Jim Blossey, at jimandpatb@embarqmail.com or 775-530-5119. NEWS AND NOTES

"GOLDEN GIRLS”

Standing (l-r) are Carol Jones, Linda Bach, Teri Narveson, Gladys Stein, Mary Kaufmann, Paula Walters. Seated (l-r) are Dorothy Martin, Jo Ann Kuntz and Angie Bidell.

On May 17, nine Sun City Aliante residents left for a 15-day trip to Spain and Portugal. Most of them are members of the Solos Club. Teri Narveson, president of the Solos, made all the arrangements for the trip. Their tour director, Carman, named them her "Golden Girls." They spent three days in Madrid, where they were treated to a traditional Flamenco show and dinner, and three days in Lisbon. They stayed in 5-star hotels in both cities. That alone was an adventure. Because they were exhausted from the 20-hour trip, they had laughs and giggles trying to understand the elaborate, high-tech hotel room control system. A large portion of the trip included a cruise on the Douro (Gold) River, which is in the heart of Portugal's wine country. They went through five locks/dams, including Carrapatelo Dam, which is one of the highest dams in the world at 22 meters. The scenery was so much different than the Las Vegas landscape. They learned all about wine, cork and filigree jewelry. Noteworthy is the fact that you must wait 25 years before a cork tree can first be harvested; then it can be harvested every nine years thereafter.

The Ladies pictured dining in style.

Just like the large cruise lines, they enjoyed nightly entertainment, plus local dancers,

musicians and expert lecturers. These included a fantastic group of Fado singers and dancers and a Tuna band, which is a competitive college choral group. The experts gave a demonstration of making filigree jewelry, and what to look for in buying cork products. As most of the travelers played both Hand & Foot and Mexican Train, they spent a few pleasant hours playing both games; and they even taught their Portuguese waiters how to play. Four ladies had arranged a trip to visit the Fatima Shrine on their free time in Lisbon. Everyone else had fun shopping along the river buying souvenirs. What a great time they had making wonderful memories. The nine "Golden Girls" will be closer forever because of this adventure. The question is when will they head out on their next exploration? Maybe, you would like to find out and join in on all the fun. For more information, please contact Te r i N a r v e s o n a t 7 0 2 - 6 4 2 - 0 6 8 3 a n d tnarveson@hotmail.com or Angie Bidell at 702639-2365 and amvidell@aol.com.

MOUNTAINVIEW HOSPITAL ACQUIRES HIGH-TECH SYSTEM FOR BRAIN AND SPINAL SURGERY Latest technology allows surgeons to perform more brain and spinal surgeries with greater imaging and precision.

aneurysms, vascular lesions and skull-based issues. The high-powered digital robotic microscope and light source can also be used in minimally invasive spine surgery. MountainView recently performed its first spine procedure, and separately a brain procedure, using the new system with Dr. Scott Glickman, neurosurgeon. This new system enables surgeons to approach each surgery with a personalized plan. The surgeon can view patient anatomy in 3-D, making it possible to perform complex procedures on unreachable areas or tumors of the brain with less invasive approaches and more precision. The technology also automatically maps and highlights all tracts before and during surgery for optimal surgical planning.

MountainView Hospital has acquired the latest system in neurosurgery technology that allows surgeons to perform brain and spinal surgeries with targeted precision. MountainView is the first in the state with this integrated system, and one of 30 in the United States.

Using an attached camera, the automatic positioning system follows the physician's tools, showing an image of the patient's brain with unprecedented detail before and during surgery. Sensors assist the doctor with surgical instrument alignment for optimal movement throughout the brain, ultimately minimizing the possibility of damaging tracts that are associated with key brain functions such as movement, speech and vision.

Synaptive Medical's BrightMatterTM system and Modus VTM robotic arm are highly detailed imaging, navigation and robotic platforms. The technology is used to operate on brain tumors,

The new robotic addition allows surgeons to perform less invasive procedures with more precision. For patients, less invasive procedures may lead to reduced complications and faster recovery times.

Exercise about 1 hour each day (on average). This appears to be the #1 most important factor in keeping weight off. Eat a nutritious breakfast daily to jump-start your metabolism. Eat a low-calorie, low-fat diet. Consistency is key. Eat plenty of low-fat protein to help you feel full in between meals. Weigh weekly. Watch less TV and limit other sedentary activities. Activate your social network. Create a health home environment. Keep fresh fruits and veggies within reach. Keep stress at bay. Find ways to deal with stress that do not involve eating. Reward yourself for staying on track, but make sure to choose non-food rewards.

Rosh Hashanah, means the "head of the year," and is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah, literally "day of shouting/blasting". It is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days, which usually occur in the early autumn. Rosh Hashanah observances include candle lighting in the evenings, festive meals to welcome the sweetness of the year ahead often including challah bread and apples dipped in honey. Prayer services include the sounding of the ram's horn (shofar). Following Rosh Hashanah, the "Ten Days of Repentance" is observed, marking the opportunity to reflect on any sins and transgressions over the past 12 months. Kol Nidre is an Aramaic declaration chanted in the synagogue before the beginning of the evening service on Yom Kippur, when fasting begins. The New Year represents a fresh start. Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. It marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jewish people traditionally observe this holy day with fasting and intensive prayer, often spending much of the day in synagogue services. Break-the-Fast is the meal eaten at the end of the fast day. It is enjoyed after the sounding of the shofar. (Sources: www.history.com, Wikipedia, www.chabad.org)

Congratulations to Felton Hyche, Lynn Hyche, Vickie Champa, Sarah Smith, and Lynn Kiedrowski, SCAL Pickleball Club members who participated in the 2019 Las Vegas AAU Tournament.

This was the first year pickleball was played at the annual Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) event held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in early July. Lynn Kiedrowski and her partner placed second in this historic event, which will now include pickleball as a competitive sport. Adding pickleball was a way to introduce the sport to youth athletes. It was predicted that the 10,000 to 15,000 athletes, and their families and friends would bring in more than $6 million to the Las Vegas economy. The AAU has been “raising champions” since its inception in 1888. Lynn Kiedrowski proudly stands in the company of numerous other AAU medal winners who include: Robert Tyre “Bobby” Jones, Jr. (golf); Carl Lewis and Jesse Owens, sprinters, (Owens won four Olympic gold medals in 1936 – crushing the Nazi claim to be the superior race); Bill Walton and LeBron James (basketball); Peyton Manning (football); Mark Spitz, Michael Phelps and Missy Franklin (swimming); Kurt Thomas and Shawn Johnson (gymnastics); Eric Heiden and Bonnie Blair (speed skating); Dick Button and Michelle Kwan (figure skating); and countless others. If you'd like to learn more about pickleball contact: Sarah Smith (702-778-0120).

CHARTER CLUBS VETERANS AUXILIARY! The Veterans Auxiliary members hope everyone is enjoying summertime. The club has taken the months of July and August off from regular meetings, but they will continue to be busy planning their upcoming events. As mentioned last month, on June 18 the Auxiliary donated 80 cases of water to the Veterans Village and 20 cases to the Woman's Village. The Veterans Club will have their Spaghetti dinner on November 2. The Auxiliary will raffle off a television. Tickets are for sale: one (1) for $2.00, three (3) for $5.00, seven (7) for $10.00 and fifteen (15) for $20.00. They will also have an Opportunity Table. Please join the Veterans Auxiliary at their next meeting on September 17.

SUN CITY ALIANTE VETERANS CLUB Summer is here; and so, is the heat. Hope you are staying cool. Remember to stay hydrated on these dry, hot days. For those of you visiting friends and family, or just seeing the sites, we wish you safe travels and fun adventures. Just a reminder, there are no Sun City Aliante Veterans Club Meetings in July and August. However, our club is still very active in the community over the summer hiatus. 1 – June 29 was proclaimed “Jim Parker Day” at a celebration in our Vista Room. Jim, a 97-year-old WW II pilot with 21 years in the Army Air Corps/US Air Force, and his wife, Joyce, are residents of our community. The event was well attended by family, friends, and neighbors. Jim received several accolades including a Proclamation of Jim Parker Day by Mayor Pro-tem Scott Black, Certificate of Appreciation and first recipient of Veteran of the Month Award from Congressman Horsford's office, and a shadow box with all his medals and a folded flag from the Veterans Club. A flag folding ceremony was performed by Karl Vonderohe, Ken Knudsen, and Liz Meyers, with narration by Sy Nielson. Aliante Classy Chefs provided scrumptious snacks after the event. Leftovers were donated to Veterans Village. KTNV-TV Channel 13 aired the event on the 11 p.m. news that night, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal published an extensive feature article on Sunday, June 30, which began on the front page of the Nevada section.

Due to the construction, the Veterans Memorial, along with the accompanying benches, has been moved to the patio outside the "new" main entrance. We invite you to take a moment to sit, relax, and reflect. We look forward to resuming our 3rd Tuesday of the month meetings, and seeing everyone at our next meeting, 7 pm. Sept 17, 2019, in the Vista Room. Upcoming events include the Spaghetti Dinner on Nov. 2, 2019 in the Vista Room.
