FROM THE PRESIDENT

Message From The President Hello Neighbors, Sun City Aliante Community Association 7394 Aliante Parkway N. Las Vegas, Nevada 89084 www.scalnlv.com

Association office Hours Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Community Center 702-638-5065 Monday-Saturday 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. Sunday 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.

It's hard to believe but we are in the last month of 2018; and very soon, we will be welcoming another year. I normally take a few minutes, especially at this time of year, to reflect on what meaningful events I shared with friends and family during the year and how very fortunate I am to live in a beautiful place filled with activities to occupy each day if I so choose. I am very blessed with many people in Sun City who add immense value to my life, and I hope I return the love I receive from you. It is good to reflect on the positive as our bodies remind us that we are no longer youngsters (to me anyone under age 70 is a "kid").

I am extremely gratified that many of you feel that I and the rest of your Board of Directors are doing the job you expected when you gave us your vote of confidence. As I see many of you, I often ask if there are any issues you have with our HOA and almost always hear that you have none. If the Board is doing its job correctly, that is the answer we want to hear. Successful HOAs take a great deal of effort to be fiscally sound and managed effectively. A major key to our reputation as a superior Association is the mutual respect that is shown between FirstService employees, the Board of Directors and you, our residents. Working together, we are a family who genuinely cares about each other.

You might have heard that computers contain valuable materials; that's actually true, but the effort it takes to recover them makes their recovery financially feasible only in large-scale operations. A typical computer or another electronic device can contain such substances as lead, chromium, beryllium, mercury, cadmium, and copper. Older CRT monitors and television sets can contain up to eight pounds of lead. So now you've got those old computers, monitors, speakers, CD/DVD players and/or stereos that are taking up space and you'd like to get rid of them. Being environmentally conscious, you check online to see who might be interested in recycling your stuff, and you see that Best Buy will take your old computer off your hands. But then you read the fine print and see that it will cost you $15. You could continue your search, but you will end up figuring out that no one really wants your hazardous waste.

BOARD MESSAGE LET'S TALK TRASH!! No, not like some of us did on the schoolyard when we were 12 years old. No, not even about what we should put in either of those bins hiding out in your garage. We need to talk about that really nasty stuff like used fluorescent bulbs, batteries, motor oil, and old computer parts. How many of you bought lots of those CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulb to save energy - before LED bulbs came onto the scene? Did you know CFLs contain a small amount of mercury and, as such, are considered to be hazardous waste? I'm sure you already know about the lead, acid, etc. in batteries, but did you know about what that old dead computer, monitor and keyboard contain?

WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG | THE BREEZE

After much searching, I found that Republic Services accepts hazardous waste on a drop-off basis, but don't waste your time looking for information on the program online. I looked everywhere and never found any useful information on it. I only found it by going to their West Gowan trash collection and recycle center. Talking to the folks that work there, I found that they accept a wide variety of hazardous materials CFL bulbs, paint, flammable liquids, pesticides, batteries, motor oil, computers, and pool chemicals. All you have to do is drop them off at 333 West Gowan Road between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on the prescribed days. Although the details are again, not on their website, they supplied me with a flyer that shows the schedule. The drop-off schedule is basically Wednesday through Saturday every other week beginning October 31, 2018, with the schedule carrying through next year. It is easy to find them, just hop on the 215 going east, get off at the Revere exit and continue south (Revere turns into Commerce along the way) until you reach the Commerce and Gowan intersection. Then turn right and look on your left for the gate (Gate B) with the appropriate signage on it. Your local landfill will thank you!! R. Wayne Headrick Secretary, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

Happy Holidays to you and yours! The SCAL Administrative Offices will be closed December 24 and 25 and December 31 and January 1 in observance of the season's holidays. Be sure your address light and any other outside lights are shining brightly, so Santa Claus won't miss your house on Christmas Eve! Exterior holiday decorations do not need the approval of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC), but please make sure your embellishments do not unreasonably disturb the peaceful enjoyment of your neighbors by illuminating bedrooms or creating noise. Holiday lights or decorations relating to any publicly observed holidays between December 1 and December 31 must be removed within 30 days after the holiday has ended. A heartfelt welcome to new homeowners. Please review your governing documents carefully, including the Architectural Design Guidelines. Per the CC&Rs, no approval shall be required to repaint the exterior of a structure in accordance with the originally approved color scheme. Owner may remodel, paint or decorate the interior of his or her home without ARC approval. However, modifications to the exterior of your home, such as screened porches, patios, and portions of your home visible on outside of the structure shall be subject to ARC approval. Please be advised to keep your pets safely in your homes or do not leave your pets unattended outside as management has been receiving reports of coyote sightings. As many of you know, there is an active construction of new homes adjacent to our community; it is natural for wildlife to migrate to other locations to find shelter and food. Do not leave traces of food or food bowls outside near your home. If you encounter a coyote face to face, stay calm. If your pet is with you, keep a tight grip on their leash. According to professionals, you should yell and wave your arms if the coyote continues to approach you. It would be wise to bring along a walking stick or anything that makes a loud noise when you're out walking your pets. Should you feel immediate threat, call NLV Animal Control 702-633-1750 or Department of Wildlife 702-486-5127 ext.3851 The ARC's only workshop this month will be held on December 13 and the only ARC Committee meeting will be held on December 14. If you have questions about an exterior project, you are invited to attend the ARC Workshop held on the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. Please submit ARC applications no later than 3 p.m. on the Wednesday before the ARC Review Day. Late submissions will not be accepted and will have to wait until the next review meeting. Thank you for the work you do to take care of your property; it shows a real sense of community pride and makes me feel fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such wonderful residents! Please be mindful of your pets. Excessive barking and not cleaning up after your pets could be subject to a fine. In addition, all pets regardless of age must always be leashed, unless they are confined on or within your property. Did you get a new phone and change your phone number? Change your mailing address? Did your emergency contact get a new phone number? Email Carol Garbarino in the Customer Service Office at cgarbarino@suncityaliante.us to update your information today. Also, please remember trash cans should not be placed at the curb earlier than 6 p.m. on Mondays and removed from the street and put away no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesday. COFFEE WITH THE BOARD The Board of Directors (BOD) hosted a Coffee with the Board on October 23 at 10 a.m. All residents were encouraged to attend. This event, held every other month, offers the opportunity for you to meet with members of the Board and your neighbors one-on-one in an informal setting. This is a great opportunity to speak openly with the BOD on any matter that concerns you and get an answer to any question that is on your mind. BOD members, including President, Warren Geller; Vice President, Mark Smith; Secretary, Wayne Headrick; Treasurer, Ed Sloman; and Directors Betty Kramer, Mark Pallans and Don Schaefer participated in a lively discussion. President Geller welcomed residents and opened the discussion by giving an update on some of changes which resulted from the previous “Coffee with the Board.” He noted that a new hot water heater had been installed in the kitchen to assure there was an abundant supply of hot water and another stand-alone microwave had been purchased; so four microwaves were now available for use by residents. Many residents came to the podium during the event to ask questions. They inquired about several topics including, the number of Fitness Classes scheduled; how the new homes under construction by DR Horton around the perimeters of Sun City Aliante will effect our community; the new BOD expansion project in the SCAL Community Center; the current guest policy; the process for selecting applicants for the SCAL Committee; the need for new chairs in the Social Hall and Vista Room; and much more. President Geller encouraged everyone to check out our new eye-appealing website at www.suncityaliante.org, which offers exciting features, such as a calendar which allows you to select fitness, events and events. COMMITTEE NEWS

HOLIDAY SAFETY Happy Holidays from your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains and Volunteers. Just as you, we are making our lists … Here's our Holiday Safety List: 1. Make sure all outdoor lights are working and on every night, dusk to dawn. 2. If you do not have lights outside of the garage, now would be a good time to install solar powered flood lights. 3. When you order packages to be delivered to your home, be sure to be there when they arrive or ask a neighbor to pick them up. 4. When you leave the house, make sure the garage door is shut . 5. When you go shopping, always take your garage door opener with you. 6. Make sure the door from your garage into your home is kept locked. 7. When you leave home always look around to make sure no one is watching you leave. 8. Watch for people walking along the street looking at front doors. 9. Get to know your neighbors. Let them know if you are having visitors for the holidays. 10. It's a good idea to notify your Block Captain if you are going away or have visitors for the holidays. 11. Never leave your garage door open except to move your car in and out. And at the top of your Gift List: How about a camera doorbell? These devices will not only ring your phone, but they will take a picture of the package being delivered or anyone who should not be at your door. Let's make this the "year of the camera." A solar powered camera with a motion sensor flood light is great for night and day video. And at the top of our Wish List: We really need at least 100 more Block Captains. Consider becoming a Neighborhood Watch volunteer in the coming year. It is a muchappreciated service to your community. Be safe; if you see something, say something! Your Neighborhood Watch Block Captains

Monumental Mammoth - A Gift to the Ages A Public Art Project Inspired by 17-Year-Old Visionary Tahoe Mack By Trish Williamson You may not realize that herds of Ice Age Columbian mammoths - the largest ancient elephant species on the North American Continent - and lions, camelops, saber tooth cats, bison, llamas, horses, massive sloths and Dire Wolves once roamed the area known as Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument. This area includes fossils and fossilized pollen in geologic formations which span nearly 250,000 years offering important insight into at least two Ice Ages and multiple warming and cooling periods. The designation of Tule Springs National Monument came about through the efforts of community partners, led by the Protectors of Tule Springs, who worked together over an eight-year period to save and protect this land now enshrined as a National Monument under the protection of Congress. Southern Nevada will soon have an iconic, lifesized Columbian Mammoth sculpture inspired by the Tule Springs National Monument and The Protectors of Tule Springs. The sculpture will symbolize Nevada's rich Pleistocene past and highlight the importance of protecting and preserving the Tule Springs Fossil Beds National Monument, a National Park Service Unit located right behind the Sun City Aliante Community.

Tahoe Mack pictured with a model of the skeletal structure of the Monumental Mammoth with Tule Springs located at the base of mountains in the background.

Tahoe Mack, a student at Bishop Gorman High School and a member of Girl Scout Troup 41, conceived the Monumental Mammoth for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The project's non-profit partner, the Protectors of Tule Springs, is collaborating to bring this monumental sculpture to life. Tahoe and the Protectors invite the Las Vegas community to participate in this public art project, which will serve as a trailhead feature to entice the public to enjoy and explore their national monument.

"I decided what I wanted to do for my Girl Scout Gold Award. The project required at least 80 hours of

work by me, outside the organization. The project had to be entirely my idea and it has to be sustainable," explained Tahoe. "If there's a national park in your back yard, I don't know what else would inspire you more. I knew this was the route I wanted to take," added Tahoe. "My idea was to create a life-size Columbian Mammoth structure. Then we could use the trash and metal collected on the site to create something beautiful." At first, Tahoe reached out to find potential artists and to the City of North Las Vegas to secure a location for the sculpture. Tahoe met with artist Luis Varela-Rico who agreed to design the skeletal structure. "When I told him about the project, he really understood the vision and was excited to be involved," Tahoe said. Then she was referred to Dana Albany to design the exterior. "Dana is an amazing artist. She is the perfect fit. She loves to work with the community and created a spaceship sculpture with school kids in Las Vegas for the Youth Educational Spaceship Project," she said.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

DECEMBER 2018

What does this project mean to Tahoe? "We want to create a magnificent structure, which tells the story of Tule Springs from the beginning when it was filled with animals. At the end of the day, this will be everyone's mammoth. We hope to have the project completed by September 2019; we would like it on tour in Nevada, starting with Burning Man. This is my dream come true!" Tahoe emphasized. How can people help? "We are reaching out to individuals and corporations for donations. We are looking for as many community partners as possible and seeking monetary and in-kind support. Every donation is tax deductible. We want everyone to be proud of this monument and feel like they have shared in creating it."

The Concept Standing nearly 14-feet tall and 20 feet long from tusk to tail, the internal structure of the mammoth will be composed of ¼-inch plate steel formed to represent the bony structure that became the fossils of Tu l e S p r i n g s . T h e mammoth "skin" will be composed of metal retrieved from the monument lands during efforts to cleanup years of illegal dumping, emphasizing the importance of conservation and sustainability in your backyard. We envision that glass retrieved during the cleanup will be used to create a collage in the sculpture foundation, representing the tules (tall grasses) and streams that covered the Las Vegas Valley during the Pleistocene Era. The trailhead installation will include interpretive information about the symbolic elements portrayed by the artwork, reinforcing the connection between those symbols and the efforts to protect Tule Springs.

The Artists Inspired by Tahoe's vision, two well established sculpture artists have committed to mentoring Tahoe's project and overseeing the construction of the Monumental Mammoth. Luis Varela-Rico will oversee the creation of the internal steel structure of the Monumental Mammoth. Luis' sculptures are a well-known part of the valley's public art scene. Dana Albany will design the mammoth's exterior skin with artifacts collected at the monument. Dana began making sculptures out of salvaged materials found on the streets of San Francisco. She has exhibited at the San Francisco Arts Commission, SOMAR Gallery, produced several large-scale sculptures for Burning Man, and has been hired to collaborate on numerous public art projects in San Francisco and Seattle. Pictured above is Tahoe Mack holding the steel skeletal structure with the artist Luis Varela-Rico.

About Protectors of Tule Springs

Pictured here is Dana Albany with her amazing sculpture.

Protectors of Tule Springs is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization, founded in 2006, to advocate for the preservation of the unique paleontological and biological resources contained in the last undeveloped portions of the Las Vegas Wash Basin before they were forever lost to housing and commercial development. Their efforts led to a passage of a Congressional Bill to establish the Tule Springs Fossil Beds as a National Monument in December 2014. The organization now serves as the non-profit partner of the National Park's management of the Tule Spring Fossil Beds National Monument and the Monumental Mammoth's non-profit partner.

Monumental Mammoth Donor Recognition With an overall budget of $150,000, the Monumental Mammoth will require a community effort. Your participation though a monetary gift or in-kind donation of goods or services will show your commitment to the importance of preserving the future by protecting the past, the benefits of public lands and outdoor experiences and working together to do monumental things. More details about the project and the opportunities to contribute may be found online at https://protectorsoftulesprings.org/get-involved/#donate or by mailing a check or money order to Sherri Grotheer, Director, Protectors of Tule Springs, 517 S. 9th Street, Las Vegas, NV 89101 or contact SherriG@ProtectorsofTuleSprings.org. Monetary giving opportunities range from the Grass Roots Level (under $250) to $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000 and $50,000. Name recognition at the permanent installation site starts at $500. All donors will receive an invitation to the Art Unveiling Ceremony scheduled next year. In-kind giving opportunities include fabrication materials, supplies and heavy equipment to borrow or rent, lighting and more. In addition, people can donate their time as volunteers. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law, as the Protector of Tule Springs is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) tax-deductible charitable organization.

COMING ATTRACTIONS Festival of Lights Hanukkah Celebration Monday, December 3, 5 p.m.

DECEMBER 2018

Christmas Tree Lighting Tuesday, December 11 6 p.m.

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is also known as the "Festival of Lights." As the name suggests, the festival is a celebration of the miraculous event that occurred years ago at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The wicks of the Menorah stayed lit for an amazing eight days, although the sacred oil in the temple was only enough to light the wicks for one day. This is the reason why lights and lighted decors play such an important part in the observance of the celebration. It is a Jewish tradition to eat foods that reect the signicance of a holiday. For at least the last thousand years, Jewish people have traditionally eaten oily foods on Hanukkah. This year our very own Aliante's Classy Chef's will prepare the traditional potato latkes (pancakes) which are served with applesauce and/or sour cream and sufganiot (deep-fried doughnuts). You are welcome to bring your favorite spirit libation (BYOB). Hanukkah 2018 begins at sundown on December 2. In commemoration of the "miracle of the oil," Sun City Aliante will begin the observance in the Community Center parking lot in front of the Aliante Community Menorah. We suggest you arrive no later than 4:15 p.m. Mark Pallans will host the lighting of the Menorah; we'll say a prayer, sing a song and then proceed to the Vista Room to begin the festivities. The Menorah will remain in the SCAL parking lot for the holiday, and the lighting will take place every evening at 4:30 p.m. beginning December 2. Larry Rothstein and Harriet Shuman will host the Festival of Lights in the Vista Room. The celebration will include a performance by the SCAL Steppers, directed by Margo Young; and the SCAL Songster's, directed by Holly Strasser; Hanukkah songs; and the traditional holiday foods. You are welcome to bring your favorite spirited libation (BYOB). Everyone is invited to this complimentary celebration. Seating is limited. First come, rst served. Please sign up at the front desk. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. Alcohol is not permitted at the movies. In this musical romantic comedy, a woman grapples with running her mother's villa, while also expecting her rst child, and worries that she won't be able to handle everything on her own. So, she enlists two of her mother's friends for assurance, help and guidance. Along the way, she learns more about her mother's past and how she faces a surprise visit from someone she's never met: her own grandmother. The lm stars Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. It's rated PG-13 (musical/romance), and runs 1 hour, 54 minutes.

Pickleball Club Now that the season has changed to bring cooler temperatures, the migrant Pickleball Club members return like geese returning to their nesting area. Annually, as members welcome back residents, several local and nearby pickleball tournaments are on the docket anticipating the fair-weather faithful's arrival and participation. The photo shown below, which was taken on a club day in October, includes some of the recent returnees. The Nevada Senior Games, held in early October at Lake Las Vegas, drew a record 350 pickleball contestants, including several players from Sun City Aliante. Also, in October, The Plaza Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas hosted the initial Las Vegas pickleball open. The event was held on the rooftop of the Plaza overlooking Fremont Street on 13 permanent courts. Over 300 players participated in that event with four countries represented: The United States, Canada, France and the United Kingdom. More than $25,000 in cash prizes was awarded. One of the SCAL residents, Lynn Hyche, won a gold medal in the hotly contested 65+ women's doubles category. Unfortunately, a cash prize was not awarded for that win. Not to be outdone by The Plaza, Bally's Hotel & Casino showcased its 14 brand-new dedicated pickleball courts in

The Huntsman Senior Games, held annually in St. George in October, initiated a new procedure for registration this year. In the past, when registration opened at midnight, all pickleball brackets were full within minutes. This year it opened as usual on March 1 but remained open until March 15. After March 15, participants were randomly selected from the pool of registered players and notified before April 15 that they were one of the fortunate players to be drawn. This allowed the registered players to get some valuable sleep; and maybe, win the pickleball lottery on Tax Day!

Brian Brockschmidt took home the 1st Place Trophy. Vicky Ingertson took home the flowers as the "Last Women Standing.” The members of the club thank the Activities and Maintenance Staff for their help. Also, they would like to express their appreciation to Ray Ramicone, Judy Darling and John Scia for their assistance with setting up. The next Poker Tournament is tentatively scheduled for January 26, 2019, depending on the expansion construction.

The Seniors with Warm Hearts Invite You to Donate to Those Less Fortunate THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US... Seniors with Warm Hearts' Holiday "Giving" Tree (located near the front desk in the SCAL Community Center) brings holiday cheer to the children and parents of S.A.F.E. House as well homeless and at-risk teens supported by Project 150 and Street Teens. The "Giving Tree" program started on November 15 and will continue through Thursday, December 13. In addition, the group added another charity, Serving Our Kids Foundation, this year. You can choose a tag from the tree with a child's wish, or if you prefer, you may donate a children's gift of your choice. Gifts are needed for all ages: boys and girls, newborns to age 18, and there are tags for parents too. For the teens of Project 150 and Street Teens, tags are also available with requests for more necessity-type items and gift cards. If you have travel size toiletries from a recent vacation, please consider donating these items as well. On the tree this year, the group will have alternative tags for those who may want to give but may not want to shop. For example, you can donate $25 for a Holiday Meal for one of Project 150's many at-risk teens. Your donation will feed a teen and their family (4 persons). Checks can be made out to Project 150. The other option is to donate $25 to Serving Our Kids Foundation to help them provide food to more than 3,000 elementary school kids each week, who do not have a food source on weekends. Checks can be made out to Serving Our Kids Foundation. If you choose one of these options, please attach the tag to your donation envelope. Please consider donating one or two items if you can. Place unwrapped gifts in their collection box and attach the tag you took from the tree. Donations of wrapping paper, ribbon, bows, holiday decorations and stocking stuffers are always welcome. (If you take a tag and then change your mind, please return the tag to the tree as soon as possible, so no child will be left without a gift.) Members would also like to send out a very big "Thank You" for the generosity residents have shown through their Holiday "Giving" Tree and throughout the year, and they wish you a joyous, healthy and happy holiday season. Their next meeting will be Friday, December 14 at 10 a.m. in the Activity Room, when they will sort the gifts received through their "Giving" Tree and distribute them to the respective organizations. Some of the new players and options are P3 and Optum doctor networks, SelectHealth, Anthem Mediblue, new Humana Gold and UnitedHealth Premier Medicare Advantage plans. Those of you loyal Senior Dimension plan holders will denitely want to see the more robust options rather than just auto renewing to the Medicare Focus plan. What you don't know will cost you!

You can call or come by the CVS Aliante across from the Community Center to set an appointment. Mark Curtis 702-527-4507 or www.AlianteHealthcare.com WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG | THE BREEZE
