Lifestyle Department Office Manager

Hello Neighbors, It's hard to believe, but December is here and with it the holiday festivities. I hope you are better prepared than I am, as I'm still in the summer/fall frame of mind. With that said, I thought you might like to know about my position as President and the Board of Directors in general and the responsibility of the Executives of Sun City Aliante. The Board consists of the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and three Directors. As your President, I serve as Executive Officer of the Board of Directors. As with any other Executive Officer, I am responsible for running Board meetings, establishing the agenda, and executing contracts and other legal documents pertaining to the HOA. In addition, I contractually serve as the liaison to the HOA's property manager and am the spokesman for the Board of Directors in most matters. My vote on Board matters carries exactly the same weight as any other member. Your Board has duties, among them being the duty of care which means that we make informed decisions that might require research before action or voting on an HOA matter. We have the duty of loyalty, which requires Board members to act in good faith, in the interest of and for the

benefit of the HOA as a whole, rather than making decisions based on personal interest or gain. HOA Board members should also avoid acting where there is a conflict or an apparent conflict of interest. We also have the duty to act within the scope of our authority i.e.; we must follow NRS 116 as well as local and Sun City Aliante governing documents. In particular, NRS 116.3103 states: “Members of the executive board are fiduciaries and shall act on an informed basis, in good faith, and in the honest belief that their actions are in the best interest of the association. The members of the executive board are required to exercise the ordinary and reasonable care of directors of a corporation subject to the business-judgment rule.” In a nutshell, your Board is responsible for a multi-million-dollar corporation, and hopefully, you now have a better understanding of your elected officials' responsibilities. In conclusion, I hope that your holidays are filled with sweet memories and enjoyment of friends and family. We have much to be thankful for, and it is your Board of Directors' sincere wish that you experience peace and good health throughout the coming New Year. The year 2020 will be an especially exciting one, as we will officially open the new expansion to the Community Center in the first quarter of the year. Warren M. BOARD MESSAGE HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Mark Smith

I am pleased to write the Board member article for December because it gives me the opportunity to be the first person to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas, a very Happy Chanukah, a very Happy Kwanza, and a most joyous, peaceful and prosperous New Year. I trust that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, spent with family and friends. I hope that the remainder of your holiday season brings nothing but good things to you and yours.

2019 has been a great year for our Association. We started by winning the Community Association Institute's award for being the best large Association in southern Nevada. We moved on to authorize and start work on the construction project to join our two buildings, close in the breezeway and reconfigure our community center. This will provide more space for our front desk associates, offices and residents, and keep us competitive with all of the new construction going on around us. Finally, in October the Board authorized changing the landscaping, walls, and lighting at our grassy areas on Elkhorn and Aliante Parkway, and at the entrances to Broadwing and Widewing. We are going to have one beautiful facility to match the beautiful people who live here!

I am the Board representative and chairperson of our Covenants Committee. I am delighted to say that 2019 has seen THE FEWEST HEARINGS for violations of our governing documents that I can remember. That is a testament to our residents living up to their obligations as members of our association and the fabulous work of Nelenie Aronce, our assistant manager and director of Standards and Compliance, who works with our residents to settle and work out any issues that may arise without the need of summoning a person to a hearing. Great job, Nelenie, and thank you one and all! This past year has indeed been a tumultuous one for our nation and the world. 2020 looks to be an even wilder ride than 2019. Whatever your politics or world view, please know that here at Sun City Aliante you have a safe harbor where you can relax, enjoy your life, and find friendship and good tidings with your neighbors in a great facility that is second to none. Happy Holidays to one and all! Respectfully, Mark Smith Director, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

WE ARE...

COMMUNITY MGR FROM YOUR COMMUNITY MANAGER Dear Residents:

Damian Carrasco

Do you ever wonder how your HOA assessments are being put to use in the Sun City Aliante community? You may not be aware of the myriad of projects, approved or being considered by our Board of Directors, which will enhance, maintain and improve the value of the overall community. Even if you rarely visit the Community Center or don't participate in the many activities, events or clubs that are offered, you still benefit from the many projects listed below:

Enhancement of the Broadwing and Widewing Entrances – We are redoing the two main entrances to Sun City Aliante to give them an attractive, modern look with new landscaping, lighting and stacked stone. This project is 90% done and will be complete as soon as the stacked stone is installed. We are confident you, your guests, and potential new residents will be impressed with the new eye-catching look. The Breeze Magazine – The Board has approved moving the printing and mailing of The Breeze from American Printing to CREEL Printing, which will save on costs and provide us better service. Due to lead time and changeovers required, CREEL will begin working with us on January 1 to produce the February 2020 issue. The Board also approved the expansion of The Breeze from 44 to 48 pages, which will result in additional space for articles and advertising revenue. The cost for printing and mailing of The Breeze is not funded through HOA assessments paid by residents. The total cost of The Breeze is entirely covered by advertisers in the magazine with a profit as well. Expansion Project – Please refer to the monthly expansion article in this Breeze on page 12 for an update. Replacement Server – We are in the process of replacing our on-site server. The new server should be fully operational by mid-December. This will allow for greater efficiency in operations and be up-to-date with the latest technology. Painting the Curbs – Currently, we are seeking out quotes for painting the curbs in front of the fire hydrants throughout the community. Due to upcoming colder weather, we will delay the painting until it is warmer, probably March 2020. Community Center Landscaping – New landscaping is being added in various areas surrounding the Community Center. Projects Under Study – We are in the preliminary stages of exploring the idea of converting the existing pool to a saltwater. In addition, next year we will look into the possibility of placing solar power in the parking lot and on the roof of the Community Center. I will provide updates on these projects later.

Lifestyle Survey – The Lifestyle Department included a resident survey as an insert in the October Breeze. Thank you to everyone who completed the survey and returned it to the Front Desk. This helps us to receive valuable feedback from our homeowners about their experiences with a wide variety of activities and programs. New Nevada Legislation – A new law was put in effect that prohibits the Association from sending someone to collection for past due obligations during a government shutdown if they are a federal, tribal or state employee/contractor or landlord and the Association has been notified and received the correct form. The form titled, “Nevada Civil Relief Act: Federal, Tribal and State Workers,” was included in the November Breeze. If this applies to you, please complete the form and return it to Customer Service Coordinator Carol Garbarino or the Front Desk. This form can be printed off the website (suncityaliante.org) under documents or obtained from Carol or the Front Desk. In closing, I want to say that it has been a pleasure for myself and the team to assist you this past year. We will continue to strive for excellence of service in everything we do. I wish you a very happy holiday season with family and friends and a happy and healthy New Year. Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

COMMUNITY STANDARDS Dear Residents: Welcome to our new residents and Happy Holidays! So happy to have the excuse to sing carols, eat all kinds of baked goods, and enjoy hot chocolate by the fire is finally here. I sincerely wish everybody a great time in the last month of 2019. In 2018 we asked the whole community to submit their Age Verification Survey. I would like to remind you this survey must be performed every two years. Therefore, 2020 is the year we will ask every household to turn in an Age Verification form to our Customer Service Coordinator, Carol Garbarino. She and I will communicate the allocation of the forms as well as track, and record these to provide an analysis for the Board. I am sure many of you have noticed the new entrances on Broadwing and Widewing. We have newly painted and illuminated Sun City Aliante signs and different landscape designs. The goal was to capture a “Wow” factor to be in alignment with the upcoming renovated Community Center. We hope to have accomplished a distinctive appeal to our community entrances. Having said that, please refrain from having pets roam on or around these areas. We would like to maintain it to be beautiful and clean. Because of the holidays, it is expected that many of our residents will put decorations on the exterior of their homes. I would like to remind our residents that lights or other decorations may be placed, erected or displayed no more than thirty (30) days prior to the start of the holiday period and must be removed within 30 days after the holidays have ended. The last thing I want to mention is the parking of vehicles on the verge (red rock median) along the streets. Management has noticed some vehicles doing this along Widewing Park, Broadwing, and Willow Wren. Please refrain from parking over the rocks. The rocks and boulders may get damaged as well as your own vehicles. The Architectural Committee meets every other Thursday for review, homeowners may attend to ask questions if something is unclear in the Design Guidelines. If you cannot attend, please email me or Carol Garbarino, Customer Service Coordinator. Reminder: Trash pick-up is every Tuesday and bulk pick up dates for the month are December 3, December 17 and December 31. Please don't place garbage cans at the curb before 6 p.m. on Mondays, and remove them no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. Fun Fact: “Jingle bells” was composed in 1857, and not for Christmas – it was meant to be a Thanksgiving song! If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or email assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us. Nelenie Aronce Assistant Manager, Director of Compliance

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

Ken Knudson Tapped for the Southern Nevada Honor Flight Honoring Those Who Served Our Nation By Trish Williamson The Southern Nevada Honor Flight Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded in June 2013 to honor American Veterans for ALL their sacrifices. Their mission is to bring war veterans to our nation's capital, Washington D.C., and escort them to war memorials which are dedicated to the sacrifices they have made for our freedom. They visit eight war memorials and the Arlington Cemetery observing the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ceremony. There is no cost to veterans.

A native of Highwood, Montana, Ken was raised on the family farm. He graduated from MSU-Bozeman College, where he majored in Ag Business. He joined the Navy and, after completing boot camp and serving ashore in San Diego, went through OCS and served on various ships and shore commands including overseas assignments in the western Pacific and Europe during his Naval career. He transferred from the line Navy to the Naval Security Group after serving two tours in Vietnam. He voluntarily served as an advisor in Vietnam in 1966-67, and again, in 1968 aboard P3 aircraft missions out of Danang, South Vietnam and served over four years overall there including ships in the Tonkin Gulf. His last duty station was in Hawaii, where he retired in 1983 after 23 years of service. He then returned to his other love the family farm in Montana to raise grain crops and cattle until retiring and moving here.

The Southern Nevada Honor Flight is an affiliate of the National Honor Flight Network, which began in 2005 in Dayton, Ohio. There are now 40 "hubs' around the country. They have no paid staff. Their volunteers coordinate fundraising, communication and travel arrangements and meals for the honorees. Sun City Aliante resident Ken Knudson was inspired by Sy and Lois Nielson (former Southern Nevada Honor Flight guardians) and contacted the Southern Nevada Honor Flight to be a guardian to accompany the veterans on the next trip. "They asked me my age, and I said 81, and found out they accept guardians only between ages 18 and 70," Ken reflected. "The representative then asked me to submit an application to go on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. on November 1-3. "I did so and was chosen to participate in this program honoring our greatest generation, Korean War and now Vietnam Veterans. I was among the first group of Vietnam Veterans who are now going and being recognized," he added. "I went to honor those who didn't make it back and did it while I still can," said Ken reflecting on his military service and the friends he served with over the years who are no longer with us. It was one of the highlights of my life. What a great journey, and I am now looking forward to the upcoming reunion."

Ken married his wife Phyllis in Boston in 1976. They moved to Sun City Aliante in 2012, and soon after, Ken became involved in our Sun City Aliante Veterans Club. He is also active in several military organizations, including the American Legion, where he represents their baseball and Cub Scout programs with area schools; he also volunteers in hospice for veterans. Ken and Phyllis have three children. Their oldest daughter's child, Darian Stephens, recently went to the Olympics to compete in downhill skiing and plans to participate in the next Olympic Winter games. Also, they are fortunate that their daughter, Jessica, and her family moved here to be with them. As a final salute, Ken enthusiastically exclaimed, "God Bless America and all who serve and their families.” Thank you, Ken for your service in the United States Navy!

He also noted, "Upon our return, the airport the halls were lined with hundreds of people with signs and balloons, all thanking us for our service. This was the welcome back we never received coming back from Vietnam." Ken remarked that he was especially grateful for the compassion, care and friendship that his personal guardian Maryellen Curry provided during his trip, and he is now a strong advocate of the Honor Flight program and passing encouragement to attend along to other veterans too.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: Holiday Season Tips NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

DECEMBER 2019

[ [

The holiday season brings out happy anticipation in all of us. We look forward to the decorations, good food, presents, and most of all, visits with family and friends. But don't let that twinkle in your eye also cause you to turn a blind eye to opportunities you may be giving the criminal who is cruising your neighborhood. Burglars are looking to do their holiday shopping in your car, garage, or home. Online purchases are a big part of our holiday shopping. Delivery trucks are in our community until late in the evening. Most companies now give you a delivery date and time. Be at home when packages are expected to arrive or ask a neighbor to be on the lookout for that box. Stop the “porch pirates” in their tracks. Make sure that a car parked outside – either yours or your visitor's – is locked and alarmed. Do not leave packages or other items in the car out in plain sight when you go inside – either the house or a store. Hide anything with your name and address out of sight, and most importantly, don't leave a house key or garage door opener where they can easily be found. The criminals are checking car doors for an easy theft and unfortunately, they find them. A glove compartment, even if locked, is a very poor hiding place. Always keep your garage door closed. We say this over and over, and it needs to become an automatic response. Forgetting to put the door down when you come home or go out is an open invitation to a criminal. When you do get home, put the door down before you start unloading the car. Don't give a criminal the opportunity to threaten you or steal things because you forgot to close the door.

At a recent presentation by the North Las Vegas Police Dept, a detective told an interesting story about a break-in. A homeowner put their keys to a second car right out in plain sight – in the house. When a burglar walked in, they took the keys and car. Find a place you can put your keys or purse that is easy for you to access but not readily found by the criminal who is looking for a grab and go situation. Remember that you and your neighbors are the greatest deterrents to crime. Get to know your neighbors. Stay aware of what is regular activity at the homes in your neighborhood. Tell your Block Captain and neighbors if you will be away or if you have visitors coming. Unexpected cars or trucks near a home is worth a call to or from your neighbor. No Block Captain on your street? Maybe you and your neighbors can get together and find someone to become one. MACULAR DEGENERATION: THE LEADING CAUSE OF BLINDNESS Thursday, December 19, 11 a.m. What is it? Age-related macular degeneration, also referred to as AMD, is one of the most common causes for severe vision loss within the United States among adults above the age 60. Unfortunately, a lot of the people who suffer with AMD do not realize they have a macular problem until they start to see blurring or distortion in their vision. The term “AMD” refers to the gradual and continual breakdown of the macula, the portion in a person's eye that helps to provide the detailed central vision that is required for clearly seeing objects. Over time, deterioration of the eye can have a serious impact on an individual's ability to read well, drive safely, recognize faces, navigate stairs, and perform a variety of other daily tasks. What can be done about it? Learn about the latest in diagnosis and treatment for maintaining your eyesight with a physician from Nevada Eye Physicians. If your still confused or just wondering if you could save money, come to my Lunch 'n' Learn on Thursday, December 5. I will go over the basics and answer questions regarding the 2020 plans. If you're turning 65 in the near future (1954 or 1955 birth year) congratulations! Contact me to find out about all your options for Medicare insurance. Medicare is one of the few real benefits of getting older.

Will it ever stop – the flyers, mail inserts, television ads? It's too much Medicare marketing! Sorry folks, it just gets more competitive each year. With nine different Medicare companies offering from one to five plans, it's a lot! We have 26 Medicare Advantage plans available for 2020! That's double from two years ago. Why can't you just stay with what you have? You can, however there have been some significant changes with Aetna, United HealthCare and Anthem plans. Basically, they are offering new plans for 2020 that weren't available before. If you're on a Humana MAPD, and didn't change to the new plan last enrollment period, you will want to see the difference there. Why all the changes? It's Competition. Las Vegas and Clark County are a big retirement Medicare markets, and companies want our business. So, the answer is you don't have to change, but: Just because you stay on the same plan doesn't mean the costs are going to stay the same!! They maybe higher in the coming year. The new 2020 plans have richer benefits in dental, vision, and hearing, plus lower copays and maximum out of pocket costs!

The menu was Roast Chicken by Karen Bell, Sweet Potato Casserole by Shirlie Walker, Stuffing by Diane Lazarus, Cranberry Mold by Collette Stickney, Green Beans Almandine and Corn Casserole by Amy Redd, Pumpkin Spice Rolls by Michael Gabriel and Key Lime Pie by Casey Porter.

This beautiful stein, painted by Angelo Belpasso, is a work of art and a masterpiece which involved many hours of work. Hand painted pieces, such as this one, require a lot of time and patience but are quite striking. They are always looking for new members, and they have three teachers who are willing to help anyone complete this type of piece. Classes are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information, please contact Judy Marr at 702-277-0236 or Jill Ernest at 702-954-6299.

The Chefs were sorry to learn it was Karen Bell's last time with the group. She is moving back to Washington State to be close to her children. They appreciated her participation and preparing some of her favorite recipes. Bon Voyage Karen and Good Luck!! The December 3 meeting will be their Christmas Celebration. The menu for this meeting is Roast and Gravy, Green Salad, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans and Fruit Cocktail Cake. They will have a Chinese Christmas gift exchange of gifts valued at $10 (if people wish to participate). Please join them if you want to learn to cook, love to cook and need some new recipes, or want to share your cooking style with the group. The group meets the first Tuesday of every month in the kitchen at 9:30 a.m. Come down and have some fun. If any questions, please call Amy Redd 501-773-5201.

OCTOBER BASKETBALL CLUB CONTEST WINNER Congratulations to Fred “Spot” Campos for his excellent basketball shooting skills and winning the monthly club “Buck in The Bucket Contest.” With his back hurting and braving the weather dipping into the 30s, he won the final “shoot-out” contest to win the bucket. He eventually tied Hawkeye Bob shooting from his “spot” during the ninth contest and a shootout was required to determine the winner. The Club's Official Scorekeeper, Bill Groothuis, did a fantastic job attempting to stay warm while keeping an accurate account.

BOOK CLUB The Book Club selection for December is Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Join members for a discussion at the Community Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, December 19, 2019. FORGET-ME-KNOTS CLUB The Forget-Me Knots got together to see all the hand-made items that members had made to date. They were preparing to give them to Veterans Village and Silver Sky Senior Community. These are two charities they have supported this year. They would love to have anyone else who would like to give back to the community, or work on their own project, join them on Monday afternoons. The Forget-Me-Knots meet every Monday at the Community Center (except major holidays). They meet from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. They have all the tools you'll need if you want to do charity work – knitting needles, crochet hooks and yarn. If you're a beginner, no problem.
