BOARD MESSAGE GRASSROOTS LOBBYING REALLY WORKS Do you really what to know what is going on in the Nevada Legislation in 2019? Would you like an opportunity to let our representatives, Sen. Patricia Spearman (Patricia.Spearman@sen.state.nv.us) and Danielle Monroe-Moreno, Assembly District (1), know your feelings on legislation affecting Common Interest Communities HOAs? Then join other homeowners and join the CAI Grassroots Initiative. What is Grassroots? Grassroots is not a committee. Grassroots is an initiative developed to give each and every homeowner in the State of Nevada a voice during legislative sessions. Grassroots was organized by the Community Association Institute (CAI) Nevada Chapter. This initiative recruits and informs all homeowners about pending legislation, pros and cons. These pro/con positions, developed by the Legislative Action Committee (LAC), are provided to Grassroots participants; so, they can pass on comments to their Nevada legislators -- thus, making all HOA residents ADVOCATES for their communities. In a united effort to protect community associations throughout the State of Nevada, the Grassroots Initiative is designed to deliver a unified message to legislators and mobilize them against "bad" legislation that could negatively impact Common Interest Communities and support "good" legislation that would be helpful to homeowners and the homeowner association industry. During Nevada legislative sessions, many bills with contentious issues are presented which affect everyone who lives in well over 3100 associations in the state! Everyone needs a voice in government, and the CAI Grassroots Initiative provides that voice. Please join the Grassroots Initiative by going to CAI-Nevada.org. Click on "ADVOCACY," select "Grassroots," select "Join Grassroots Initiative.” Complete the signup form. Thank you for joining our grassroots effort today! MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD. 2019 Candidates for Board of Directors WARREN GELLER My wife, Jane, and I moved to Sun City Aliante in 2009 from Rochester, New York. I began my career as a chemist at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital doing heart and lung research, and then joined the Research Laboratories at Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. I worked for seven years in chemical research, where I was granted several patents relating to diffusion transfer and was then asked to join the litigation team, where I was assigned to work with inside and outside lawyers on the then-largest patent infringement case in U.S. history (Polaroid Corp. vs. Eastman Kodak Co.) After four years of pre-trial work, I was assigned to assist during trial and post-trial activities in Boston and New York City. After this seven-year stint, I became the Director of the Administrative Department of the legal division at Eastman Kodak. As the Legal Administrator, my duties included securing and directing all computerized needs of the Division, negotiating contracts, administrating all payments of bills, creating and overseeing the annual budget which was in excess of 75 million dollars. I was also the personnel director for over 200 people, and I secured and staffed all outside litigation offices and administered all payroll activities as well as overseeing the annual personnel reviews of all members of the Division. I was elected as president of the Sun City Board of Directors for 2015-2016, 2016-2017, and 2017-2018. Previously, I served as Vice President of the Board and was on the Covenants and Communications Committees. I am a member of the Bridge Club, and was a member and Treasurer of the Sun City Songsters for the past 7 years. In June 2014, I received my DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certification from the CAI (Community Association Institute) and continue to take on-going classes to further my knowledge. As your president for the past three years I have taken an active role in establishing relationships with other HOA Presidents, local politicians and the City of North Las Vegas department heads so that our concerns and demands might be addressed in a personal fashion. During my years on the Board, I have worked closely with two Community Managers ensuring that the best interests of our community are always observed. I have spearheaded enlarging and modernizing our community center and will be one of two Board members who will be project coordinators. Continuity in leadership positions is essential in not re-inventing the wheel, and I am committed to excellence within Sun City. I believe that my record of leadership, sound business decisions, years of service on your Board of Directors, and a strong commitment to community, make me a sound candidate for re-election.

ASSOCIATION NEWS
NANCY PRINCE My name is Nancy Prince, and I am running for a seat on the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. I have been a resident of Sun City Aliante since July 2017, after moving here from Wisconsin where we lived for 25 years. Born and raised in suburban Chicago, I am a Registered Nurse with the majority of my career spent in corporate administration and management. I have worked for several major health care organizations, as well as, in Public Health and for a Fortune 100 Insurance company. I served on the Board of Directors of both local and state nursing associations in positions of Director, Secretary, and President. I also served on the Board of Directors for my local county Health and Human Services Department as a Director and Co-Chair. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Master of Science degree in Management. I am currently serving as a member of the Sun City Aliante Finance Committee, and I am also a member of Sun City Aliante Songsters. Your Board of Directors is charged with making decisions that will provide the best outcomes for our community. My entire professional career has been centered on decision-making, and I have dedicated myself to serving others. I make decisions after carefully examining data and input, then determining the best action to take. My experience with serving on various Boards of Directors and my ability to listen and to solicit ideas and concerns are strengths that I would bring to the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors. I have a passion for improving peoples' lives, and I want to share my experience and love of this great community by bringing a compassionate voice and a business perspective to decisions that will have positive impacts on every resident of our beautiful Sun City Aliante. I sincerely request your support and your vote. Thank you!
WAYNE RODGERS Wayne Rodgers was born and raised in San Pedro, Calif. In 1966, when my father was promoted by Ferro Corp., I relocated with my family to Cleveland, Ohio. I spent the next 42 years there raising my family. I graduated from college in Cleveland and began a sales career for several years before entering my finance career. I spent 25 very successful years in the finance market until the economic crash of 2007. After the crash, I retired moved to Sun City Aliante in 2008; my retirement home was purchased new in 2007. I started helping neighbors with various repairs and was convinced to share that knowledge with the community. This became a way for me to give back to so many in need of handyman services. So, for the last nine years, I have been a handyman in Sun City Aliante that has resulted in helping many residents in overcoming needed repairs to their homes. I will continue to offer my services as the Sun City Handyman to whomever needs them. I have family ties to the great state of Nevada; they go back to the '30s and '40s. All are relative to the mining industry. My grandfather, father, and uncle spent many years in central Nevada working in towns like Tonopah, Goldfield, Manhattan, Battle Mountain and many more. In fact, my grandfather's tractor and other equipment are on display at the Central Nevada Museum in Tonopah, examples of the early mining experiences of Nevada's history. My goal is to continue to give back to our wonderful community in any way I can help to support the success of Sun City Aliante. The current Board and previous Boards have done a great job in keeping this community the best in Nevada. And I thank you for your service. That being said, I currently hold a position of President of an HOA Board in Utah. I have been a hands-on Board member for the last four years. I physically work on restoration projects because it is a passion of mine to give all I can to the community. Thank you for your support.
MARK TOWERS Elected to the Sun City Aliante Board of Directors in 2016, Mark has served on the Sun City Aliante Property and Grounds Committee, the Sun City Aliante Architectural Review Committee, the Aliante Master Architectural Review Committee, and he is a member of the Veterans Club. COMMUNITY STANDARDS It's time to spring forward! Don't forget to set your irrigation clock ahead one-hour when daylight saving time begins on March 10 at 2 a.m. This also is a great time to check your clock's batteries. Please review your last water bill for your assigned watering days by checking on the website www.snwa.com. Speaking of batteries… I want to remind everyone in the community about a very special organization we have in Sun City Aliante. Seniors Assisting Seniors (SAS) is a group of dedicated individuals who brighten the lives of fellow seniors by giving a helping hand and a friendly smile. SAS helps seniors who need limited home maintenance assistance or temporarily need medical equipment. They assist in changing smoke alarm batteries or air system filters. Recently, a homeowner described her experience with SAS in my office. She expressed appreciation for two volunteers, Owen Egge and Dave Hollander, who went above and beyond replacing four smoke alarms in her home. This is one of the many kindnesses and generous work SAS volunteers do for residents in our community. We are very blessed to have such an amazing organization. Please reach out should you need their assistance. Hotline: 702.981.3149 If you want to protect your plants and flowers from little pests, we suggest you check out an excellent, inexpensive solution. There is a green plastic-coated, wire mesh fencing (Green Vinyl Hex Netting) readily available that blends with foliage and is effectively invisible. However, please submit an application and plot plan to the ARC (Architectural Review Committee) before moving forward on this or any other project. New Guest Policy – On January 9, 2019, the Board of Directors rescinded the Guest Fee Resolution of 2009, and made changes to the Rules and Regulations and Club Guidelines. In effect, the Rules and Regulations appendix of a guest was redefined to read as follows: GUESTS are invited individuals of Association Activity Cardholders to enter upon Sun City property and use its facilities. Bulk Pick Up Schedule – For your convenience, the correct copy of the 2019 Bulk Pick Up Schedule is included in this issue of The Breeze (March 2019) as an insert. We appreciate your patience, as we have been working with Republic Services to obtain the correct information. Fun Fact: Betty White, who was born in 1921, is older than sliced bread, which hit the market in 1928. The first commercial use of the machine was by the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, which sold their first slices on July 7, 1928. Friendly Reminder: Please don't place your trash cans at the curb earlier than 6 p.m. on Mondays and remove them from the street no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesdays. Trash pickup is every Tuesday and the bulk pick updates for the month are March 12 and March 26. If you have any questions, please contact me at 702-638-5006 or assistantmanager@suncityaliante.us. Here are some helpful tips from the law enforcement professionals: 1. Don't leave blinds or curtains open during the day when no one is home. This allows burglars to scope out items that they can take when you are not home. 2. Leave lights or a radio on or put them on timers to discourage a burglar from thinking a darkened home is empty. 3 Vary your daily routines. A patient burglar will scope out when you normally leave your home and how long you are away. 4. Acknowledge every knock on the door. We tend to not want to answer, but that can cause a burglar to think they will be able to make a forced entry into an “empty” home. Answer through the door or make sure you have a security door that is locked when you open the door to answer. 5. Make sure that your garage door is down before you leave the neighborhood. At our monthly meetings there is always an audible gasp by the group when we hear the reported number of garage doors that are observed open by the patrols – both day and night. This is the ultimate invitation to choose your home for a burglary! Contact information for the North Las Vegas Police Dept. Community Services Division is: 702-633-1808. MEET SONJA BANKSTON-CULLEN Our New Lifestyle Chair Consummate Leader, Educator, Professional, Community Advocate - these are a few of the words which describe Sonja Bankston-Cullen "Ms. BC," a new Sun City Aliante (SCAL) resident, who was recently elected as chair of the SCAL Lifestyle Committee. Throughout her career, Sonja has been devoted to community s e r v i c e . " Yo u always give back. You always serve in the community in which you live," she emphasized. Her success story b e g i n s i n C o m p t o n , California, where she was born and Sonja Cullen stands ready to assume her new raised. After high duties as Lifestyle Chair. school, she a t t e n d e d Pepperdine University and focused on Political Science and English. During her senior year, she secured an internship position in Washington, D.C. with The Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. "The program allowed me to work with young people from around the nation who came to D.C. for one-week sessions over a 4-month period. We taught them about the inter-workings of Capitol Hill. It was an intense, awesome experience," she noted. After only three years, she earned a Bachelor's Degree from Pepperdine at age 19. (At that time, she was too young to obtain her teaching credentials, so she stayed in D.C. working for a couple of years.)
school; and three years as principal of a high school. Then she moved on to the Office of Special Projects and Human Resources, where she oversaw funding and compliance for 33 schools and the Central Office until she retired in July 2017. Sonja and her husband, William "Bernard" Cullen, purchased a home in Sun City in May 2017 and later moved from Compton with Sonja's mother, Stella Bankston. "Our home is perfect for us. We were meant to be here. The owner's had a cash offer already, but I wrote a letter telling them how much we loved their home, and they decided to sell it to us," smiled Sonja. "It was Divine Intervention!” Why did Sonja choose the Lifestyle Committee? "I believe my human resource background and my involvement in activities with children and parents were well-suited to the mission of the Lifestyle Committee," she reflected. What are her vision and goals? "I am working very closely with the Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent to support the work that she does for the community," Sonja said. "Our goal is to ensure the Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups are open to as many people as possible and to let them know that we will do everything we can to support them. We want to be able to provide a little more guidance; when people are seeking answers, be able to offer them suggestions." She is already involved with the Inter-Club Council (ICC), the new group which brings all the Charted Club and Special Interest Group representatives together quarterly. "Going to the ICC is important; so, groups see there is a face to the Lifestyle Committee. There is a heart to the Lifestyle Committee," emphasized Sonja. "We hear you and if there is something we can do to assist, we will do our very best.
Then her longtime mentor, Kelcey Richardson, inspired her to move forward and obtain the necessary education to reach the pinnacle of her career. "Kelcey saw it in me. He helped me attain admission to CAL Lutheran; and within two years, I earned my Administrative Credentials and a Master's Degree in Leadership."

"I look forward to meeting and working with the people in the SCAL community," Sonja said. "I am very happy here." Take the time to welcome this lovely lady; you may make a friend for life.

Hello, Friends and Constituents of Sun City Aliante. It has been an honor to serve as your Councilman, and I'm excited to be running again to earn your vote. In 2015, I promised to bring good paying jobs to the area, expand economic opportunity for business owners, both new and established alike, protect our environment and property values, and help increase safety on our streets and in our neighborhoods by providing needed and welldeserved resources to our police, firefighters and first responders. I'm proud of the accomplishments our City Council has been able to complete, but we have more work to do! Since 2015, I have focused on protecting Tule Springs, providing needed funding to our police and firefighters, Protecting Sun City from high density growth around us, while expanding economic opportunity by providing jobs with Amazon's expansion into the area, as well as Apex, Sephora, and other groundbreakings I've been honored and proud to take part in. Our new ER at Aliante facility on Aliante Parkway, and Dignity Health, St. Rose Dominican, will provide valuable medical services to the area. New restaurants and much more are on the way, too. Thanks to our diligent city staff, we completed these projects while keeping traffic growth to a minimum, with a continued focus on your safety working with your Board of Directors, community watch, and our VIPs. I still feel Ward 4 has plenty that can be accomplished despite all of our amazing improvements thus far! As your Councilman, I'm asking for your vote so I can ensure your needs are met; our community continues to grow safely, and our neighborhoods and parks are kept safe, clean and repaired, and continuing to make myself available to you when called upon. I do enjoy making myself available to you, and supporting and participating in your events. I do realize I answer to you, my constituents above all else. Again, thank you for allowing me to serve as your councilman, I hope to continue with you trust and support for our next 4 years.
LAS VEGAS SPOTLIGHT
AEP, OEP, SEP – What's with the Government and all the anachronisms?? There are specic times when you can sign up for MAPD (medicare advantage), PDP (prescription drug plan) or make changes to coverage you already have. You don't need to sign up for Medicare each year. However, each year you'll have a chance to review your coverage and change plans. Right now, is (OEP) Open Enrollment period (Jan 1st- Mar 31st), During the MA OEP, enrollees may change from one to another MAPD plan. Disenroll from their MAPD plan and return to Original Medicare. Individuals may make only one election during the OEP. IEP (Initial Enrollment period) this is when you turn 65yrs old. IEP has a 7month (mo) window (3 mo prior to (B-day mo) 3 mo after) =7 months which you can enroll into any MAPD or PDP plans. Medicare Supplements (Medigap) plans have a separate window. SEP (special enrollment period) You can make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage when certain events happen in your life, like if you move or you lose other insurance coverage. (i.e. Drop a retirement plan and go to individual Medicare) There are many other SEP options and if one applies you can enroll in Medicare plans most anytime. Why do you want to know this? Because in the last 2 months I have switched a number of people from here in SCAL from group retirement plans to individual Medicare and here are examples of their savings: 1. The Jones $188/mo premium x 2 switched to $0 premium = $376/mo savings (no change in doctors) plus they saved another $45/mo on their prescription drug costs. 2. The Smiths $164/mo (OPM) premiums x 2 switched to $0 = $328/mo savings and from $1500/annual deductible to $0 deductible!! Could we save on our Medicare without giving up benets? Maybe it just takes a little time for a no cost appointment and evaluation. What you don't know will cost you! In stress, time, and money. I will be hosting a Lunch n Learn on Thursday March 14, come get your questions answered and learn how you may save on your healthcare costs

VETERANS AUXILIARY
VETERANS CLUB
Hello, from the Veterans Auxiliary members: Thank you to everyone who came out to the Veterans Pancake Breakfast and Auxiliary Bake Sale. Everyone had a fun time and enjoyed yummy pancakes! Club members continue to meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 9 a.m. Their next meeting is scheduled on March 19 in the Vista Room.
Greeting Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Veterans: As you know, we hosted our annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, February 9 and, as always, the participation within our community was outstanding. We served approximately 220 plus guests, and it seemed that everyone enjoyed the breakfast. It is always a pleasure to see so many of our neighbors getting together, meeting old friends and making new ones. Great job to all. Events like this are only possible with the cooperation, participation and willingness to pitch in by volunteers and helpers. Thank you all for all you do. Sy Nielson, Chairman, Veterans Affairs of Sun City Aliante
A very special “thank you” to all the SCAL residents who donated items to the Veterans Auxiliary for the homeless and needy veterans at Veterans Village. The bags were donated on Veteran's Day. This just goes to show when people all work together great things can happen!
