At the formal dedication of the Community Center, I will be recognizing these people; but for now, I want you to know that your Board of Directors owes a sincere thank you to all who worked so hard on behalf of Sun City Aliante. Desire is not enough for a large-scale project and the residents who comprise Sun City Aliante never cease to amaze me with their willingness to share their expertise and time. Two of your Board of Directors have worked hand-in-hand with me every step of this project from conception to completion. They are Ed Sloman, your Treasurer, and Wayne Hedrick, your Secretary. Thank you both for your outstanding contributions. The expansion will house five new billiard tables; an electronic dartboard game; a shuffleboard table; a large wall-mounted television set; new seating furniture and a new reception area as well as new offices for Damian, Debbie and Trish. A major goal of this project is to provide you and future residents, a comfortable and beautiful place to relax, meet your fellow residents, play games. and view the stunning Sheep Mountains. To enhance security, the new entrance will be the only way to access the Community Center. Last, but certainly not least, is the intention that the enhancement to the Community Center will make us competitive with new communities being built in North Las Vegas; thereby, maintaining and, hopefully, growing the value of your home. The next several months will be filled with events to commemorate the expansion; so please read your Breeze, eBlasts and access the online website for times of upcoming celebrations. Respectfully submitted, Warren M. Geller President, Sun City Board of Directors

BOARD OF DIRECTORS
BOARD MESSAGE KUDOS TO THE LIFESTYLE TEAM I'd like to recognize our Lifestyle Department, led by Debbie Kent. The Lifestyle Team has come a long way since my wife, Kris, and I moved to Sun City Aliante in 2013. I can remember that we would probably have three excursions a month available to our community members. Our attendance wasn't huge, but it was an excursion for us adventurous types. By comparison, we now have at least twelve excursions a month with a wide variety that caters to everyone. The excursions include trips to museums, rafting on the Colorado River, Nevada Ballet, The Smith Center, historical sites, hiking trips, shows, iconic entertainment, sporting events, the Tuacahn Amphitheatre, shopping and much more. I don't believe we have had to cancel many a due to lack of attendance. The costs are reasonable, and who can pass up a chauffeured bus. We are also provided time to have dinners on our own at certain venues. If you haven't experienced some of our trips, you are missing out! Ed Sloman
Additionally, the Lifestyle Department oversees our approximately 44 Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Groups and coordinates the quarterly Inter Club Council Meetings (ICC). These meetings bring all the Club leaders together in one forum to help them stay in the know, discuss relevant issues and celebrate accomplishments. In the Vista Room or Social Hall at the Community Center, we normally have 2-3 Lunch 'n' Learns a week on interesting topics. Councilman Cherchio held two within the past few months. Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick holds quarterly Lunch 'n' Learns. Health Fairs are scheduled regularly as well as our flu shot clinics. The Advertiser's Meet 'n' Greets offer a great opportunity to meet vendors who support our magazine and win FREE prizes. Movies are offered twice a month as well as dancing. What more could you want? The Breeze publication has grown under the guidance of Trish Williamson. It has expanded from 36 pages to 48 pages. Enough revenue is generated from the advertising program to pay for all the costs of the magazine (design, publication, and mailing). The additional monies are contributed to the operating budget of our community. The Board of Directors has established guidelines that its content must be information/articles and advertising split 50/50. Recently, the staff found a new printer which will save additional monies.

Lastly, I would be remiss if I did not recognize our Front Desk Associates. By virtue of their position, they wear many hats and continually multitask, all with a smile. Whether you are checking in for a fitness class, the gym, pool or a seminar or want to reserve a show ticket with your credit card, they are ready to assist. In addition to the myriad of details they handle and the flurry of activity, the telephone rings non-stop. The Front Desk has become the “411 Information Center” for almost anything you can imagine, such as “When's the next garage sale?” or “What are the hours of the public library?” They do their best to answer every question or direct a resident to the right person or phone number. Thank you to the Lifestyle Team for all they do! Ed Sloman Treasurer, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors

WE ARE...
COMMUNITY MGR FROM YOUR COMMUNITY MANAGER THANK YOU FOR MAKING A DIFFERENCE I want to recognize and express my heartfelt appreciation to all the dedicated VOLUNTEERS who play an extremely important role in the Sun City Aliante Homeowner's Association (HOA). Whether you serve as a member of the Board of Directors, a Committee Chairperson or member or give your time and talents to assist groups, such as Seniors Damian Carrasco Assisting Seniors or Neighborhood Watch, thank you for the countless hours you spend to ensure we continue to maintain the highest standards and quality of life in our community. Simply put, you, as a volunteer, play an integral role in making the Sun City Aliante community a great place to live! If you're new to Sun City Aliante or have just never been involved before, I invite you to consider some of the opportunities and rewards of becoming an HOA volunteer. Right now, we have openings on the Property and Grounds, Lifestyle and Communications Committees. Committee members are directly involved in helping with making major decisions and assisting with events and activities. For example, the Communications Committee will sponsor an “Advertisers Meet 'n' Greet” on Thursday, April 30, which will offer residents the opportunity to meet face to face with advertisers in The Breeze magazine, enjoy a continental breakfast and be eligible to win great prizes. This event is free, open to all residents and is held twice annually.
Here are a few good reasons people like to get involved as a volunteer: Help to protect your community's property values. Meet neighbors and make new friends. Become involved in establishing your community's rules and/or make new ones. • Help to plan community events and social activities. • Use your skills in a productive way. • You are needed! • • •
Part of being a great volunteer is loving what you are doing. Find something that you're passionate about or something that inspires you and matches your passion to the needs in our community. I hope you will consider joining our team of selfless volunteers. If you are interested in joining one of the Committees listed above, simply pick up a Committee Interest Application at the Front Desk or go online to visit www.suncityaliante.org. Select “Documents” at the top of the website and then select “Commonly Used Forms” and you can access the form. Fill out the form and turn it into the Front Desk. In closing, I want to commend all of our volunteers, who lead busy lives, yet still find the time to be here making a difference in our fabulous community. Thank you for your time and talents! Damian Carrasco Community Manager, Sun City Aliante

LIFESTYLE NEWS Dear Residents, Living in the “Entertainment Capital of the World” does have its advantages! What happens in Vegas – ONLY happens in Vegas! From residencies, acrobatic artistry, music legends, museums, cultural and arts, sporting events, travel, and on property entertainment, the choices never stop. In addition, the Chartered Clubs, Special Interest Groups, Fitness Classes and our state-ofthe-art fitness center provide excellent social and physical wellness for the mind, body, and spirit. March brings exciting highlights such as Shen Yun, Michael Bolton, Music Bingo, The Magnificent Five, Andre Rieu, Vegas Golden Knights, and Mary Wilson of the Supremes. It also features on Friday, March 6, the first Inter Club Council meeting of 2020! At 10 a.m., in the Vista Room, all Chartered Clubs and Special Interest Group leaders and representatives will come together to promote their activities and share information in this valuable networking session. It has contributed to the success of increased communications between the groups and their contributions to the Sun City Aliante Community. Special thanks to Qung Go and Richard Lawhead for their support of this innovative program. COMMUNITY STANDARDS Hello Residents and Guests! Spring is here and how exciting to see the blooming flowers in our community! Thank you for keeping Sun City Aliante a great place to live. In this issue, I want to remind you, as it starts to warm up, more golfers will be playing. Our friendly neighbor, Aliante Golf, will want their parking spaces available for their guests. Please refrain from using these spaces, especially the handicap parking spaces. Moreover, staff and some residents are noticing vehicles parked in our handicap parking spaces without a valid disabled person placard or disabled person plates. There are parking limitations for disabled persons even with these placards and plates. For example: in spaces marked with a crosshatched pattern next to a parking space with the International Symbol of Access (wheelchair symbol). These spaces are for wheelchair and wheelchair lift access. Please be respectful, and as a common courtesy, do not park in these spaces. As it gets warmer, this is the best time to start thinking about plans for your garden. Milo Espinoza of Gothic Landscape suggests you calibrate and automate irrigation systems, sharpen and sanitize tools (Sanitize tools by spraying a light coat of watered down bleach) after each use; this will prevent any disease or fungus from spreading from plant to plant, prune shrubs and trees and fertilize. Last month, I wrote about drivers speeding on our streets. This month, I want to remind residents and guests that speeding in our Community Center parking lot is NOT OKAY either. Too often drivers are speeding through and not being mindful of pedestrians coming out of the Vista Room and other drivers reversing from their parking spaces. Please decrease your speed as you enter the parking area. Taking a bicycle ride is an enjoyable, healthy way to travel to the Community Center. Once you arrive, please remember to park your bicycle in the bicycle rack located near the Bocce Ball court area, not on the rails in front of the Community Center. Please be reminded that Age Verification Survey forms are available in the Customer Service Office for those who would like to fill out their forms early. See Carol Garbarino, Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. if you have any questions.
June 5 - Carol Burnett - Smith Center 20 - Bon Jovi - T-Mobile Arena
Reminder: Trash pick-up is every Tuesday and bulk pick-up dates for the month are March 10 and March 24. Please don't place garbage cans at the curb before 6 p.m. on Mondays and remove them no later than 6 p.m. on Tuesdays.
As always, I am so appreciative of the extraordinary First Service Residential Team! The staff works hard to make these memorable events happen. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to making Sun City Aliante a successful community!

Effective March 1, 2020, the mailing address for accepting payments for all HOA assessments has changed. Please use the new mailing addresses below to send in your respective payments for Sun City Aliante and the Aliante Master Association: Sun City Aliante c/o FirstService Residential P. O. Nevada law NRS 116.31034(5) states that… “If at the closing of the nomination period, the number of candidates nominated for the Board is equal to or less than the number of members to be elected to the Board at the election, the following procedure will apply. (a) The Association will not prepare or mail any ballots to Owners; and (b) The nominated candidates shall be deemed to be duly elected to the Board at the Owner's meeting at which the ballots would have been counted; “If at the closing of the nomination period, the number of candidates nominated for the Board is less than the number of members to be elected to the Board at the election, the Board may fill the remaining vacancies by appointment at a Board meeting held after the candidates are elected. (a) Any such person appointed to the Board shall serve as a member of the Board until the next regularly scheduled election of members of the Board. (b) A Board member elected to a previously appointed position which was temporarily filled by Board appointment may only be elected to fulfill the remainder of that term.” Due to the fact that there are five open positions on the Board and five residents have submitted Candidate Interest Forms, there will be no need for a formal election. Currently, one Board seat is vacant due to Wayne Rodgers' resignation. At the February 12 Board of Directors meeting, Sonja Bankston-Cullen was appointed to the open seat, and she will serve the remainder of the term, which is one year. The Board Members will be deemed elected by acclamation at the Annual Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. Although there will be no election process this year, much time and energy have led us to this point. I would like to thank Election Committee members: Chris Wickliff, Kay Drewlo, Linda and Owen Egge, and Kathryn Brandel for all their input and cooperation. Many thanks also to our Community Manager, Damian Carrasco; Assistant Manager and Compliance Director, Nelenie Aronce; and The Breeze Editor and Publisher, Trish Williamson for their efforts and input. THE BOARD MEMBERS WILL BE DEEMED ELECTED BY ACCLAMATION AT THE ANNUAL HOMEOWNERS MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, May 13, 2020.
There are many reasons Sonja chose to volunteer as a member of the Board of Directors in Sun City Aliante. But she believes the most important reason is serving our beautiful community utilizing the leadership, budgetary, communication and organizational skills that she has developed in 30+ years as a public-school educator and administrator. She knows how important it is to become active in the community in which you live if you want it to positively progress. It is important for her to be a dynamic contributor to the neighborhood she and her husband intentionally chose to enjoy their retirement. Her past experience serving at the middle and high school levels, not only allowed her to develop effective communication skills, but she learned how to work with diverse stakeholders including children, parents, concerned community agents and local business owners to develop a positive environment to learn and work. She has served at the district level assisting schools and central office departments in budget development, federal and state compliance monitoring and comprehensive compliance plan development and implementation. When she moved to Sun City Aliante, she immediately searched for an area in which she could become involved. She has served on the Sun City Aliante Lifestyle Committee and had the privilege to be appointed as Chairperson last year. Therefore, she humbly submits to you that her goal is very simple… she wants to serve to ensure that the community she cares about maintains the standard of living that will benefit all who have chosen to live in an active 55+ residential community.
WAYNE HEADRICK Wayne and his wife, Barbara, moved to Sun City Aliante in 2008. He became a member of the Board of Directors in 2013, and has, except for one year, been on the Board. He earned his DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certification in December 2014 and his Advanced DCAL Certification in August 2018. He was CEO of a marine electronics company in Florida, Telecommunications Manager for the City of Fort Lauderdale and the Communications Engineering Manager for the Miami-Dade Police Department. Today, he operates a consulting firm providing services to first responders and government agencies. His goals include: Keeping the community fiscally sound and judiciously investing assets in projects that benefit you the homeowner; Listen to and hear the desires of homeowners; Be proactive in the business of running Sun City Aliante by being there when needed and knowing his voice represents the homeowner and not his opinion; Assure all homeowners that they will continue to live in and enjoy a community that reflects their choice of lifestyle.
ED SLOMAN Ed Sloman was elected to the Board of Directors in June 2018 and appointed Treasurer. Prior to his election to the Board, he served on the Finance Committee for 2 ½ years. Over the past 19 months, he has learned about the internal operations of the community, and this experience has validated the great community to which all residents belong. During his short tenure, he has acted as the liaison to the Finance Committee and The Property & Grounds Committee. Additionally, he has served with the Board President and Secretary on the Ad Hoc Committee to monitor the construction of the 3,500 square-foot Expansion and Enclosure Project. As Treasurer, he prides himself on ensuring bills are approved in a timely manner as they are processed through the management team at FirstService Residential. One of the many accomplishments that occurred last year was working with the Board President to renegotiate and lower the monthly fee paid to First Service Residential. The community has aged and there are monies in the Reserve Fund to do updates within the Community Center, and he would like to continue to be part of the decision process. He looks forward to another two-year term and to continue to make Sun City Aliante an even better place to live.
MARK SMITH Mark is the longest serving Board Member in the community. He was first elected in November 2006 and has served continuously since that time. He has held the offices of President, Vice President and Secretary. Sun City Aliante won it is first “Best Homeowners Association of the Year” award, while he was President. He holds a DCAL (Dedicated Community Association Leader) certification from the Community Associations Institute. He has been a participant in, and a part of, every decision and accomplishment in our community since November 2006. He voted for both expansions of the Community Center, the building of the Craft Rooms, pickleball and basketball courts, remodeling of the kitchen, a sound system and security system and much, much more. Mark believes the key to any successful community is to ensure it is financially secure, that everything is done in the best interests of the entire association, that home values are maintained and enhanced, and that everyone is treated fairly. As a Director of the Association, he recognizes his fiduciary duty to the Association to achieve these goals. Sun City Aliante is financially secure and consistently receives the highest grade of financial integrity from our accountant. He assures residents that every decision he makes and vote cast is done with the best interests of the Association in mind. He believes the Board is committed to treating all homeowners and residents fairly, equally and respectfully and keeping the lines of communication open between the Board and residents. He also emphasizes the renovation of the Community Center will go a long way in maintaining and increasing property values and keeping the community competitive with new “over 55” communities coming to the neighborhood. He says he is arguably the most outspoken speaker at Board meetings. He believes it is essential for every Director to voice his/her opinion on matters and not sit quietly without contributing anything to the discussion at hand. People may not always agree with him, or like the way he says things, but everyone knows where he stands on the issues. Mark graduated from Hunter College in New York City and received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. He served as the Principal Law Clerk to several justices of the New York Supreme Court from 1976 to 1986. In July 1986, he and his family moved to South Florida, where he served as an Assistant State Attorney under Janet Reno, and then under Katherine Fernandez Rundle for 20 years. He specialized in prosecuting domestic violence, elderly abuse and public corruption.

NEIGHBORHOOD NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MONTHLY BULLETIN: A List from Your Block NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
COMMITTEES
[ [
If you are going to be away for a day, a couple of weeks, or longer, you need to make sure your home is safe from a break-in or unexpected home accidents. Following is a list to keep handy and check off before you leave. • •
•
• •
Let your Block Captain and neighbors know you are going to be away. Give those watching your house a contact number. Also, make sure they have the house alarm code in case they must let themselves or law enforcement into the house. If you don't have someone who will hold onto your house, consider putting a lock box with the key inside (like a realtor uses) attached to an outside faucet or something similar. Ask a neighbor to park a vehicle in your driveway periodically to make it look like someone is home. Ask that neighbor to also put a garbage can at the end of your driveway on pick up day.
For a longer period or a season away, the following are especially important to do: • Trim your bushes to a good three feet away from your windows. If you have a landscape company coming regularly, make sure they maintain this open perimeter. • If you are away in the summer months, check your water bill carefully as it can indicate a major leak in your drip system. • Make sure your smoke alarm batteries have been changed. • Shut off the water in your house with the big yellow handle in the garage. • If you don't have a security door, consider installing one. It will be an important deterrent to the burglar who can kick in a single front door in seconds. • Stop your paper and ask your Block Captain and neighbors to look for flyers or cards left on your door. • Put your coach lights on a timer; so that, the front of your house is illuminated. You are responsible for the safety of your home. Your Block Captain and neighbors can be important allies in your home's protection.

However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria may reach levels that cause tooth decay and gum disease. When your gums are inflamed, bacteria from your mouth enters your bloodstream. This can lead to an increased risk for serious health problems such as, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and lung infections. You won't want to miss this opportunity to see your friends and neighbors take the stage to entertain you and enjoy an evening full of surprises on Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Vista Room. Everyone is going to have an opportunity for a fun evening during and after the show. Following the performances, guests will be invited to enjoy delicious desserts generously provided by Aliante's Classy Chefs. There will also be an array of door prizes and drawings. The Mistresses of Ceremony for this fabulous undertaking are Holly Strasser and Connie Bensler. (Think of them as MCs at The Academy Awards, but no prizes will be awarded for performances; it's all in fun.) They are also assisted by Stage Manager, Tonnie Furjanic, and Sandra Carnes who is the pianist for the event. Mcs Connie Bensler (l) and Holly Strasser (r) are ready for a really big show.
“There are no winners or losers or voting on the best act; so, people should feel more comfortable," emphasized Connie, "and everyone has a chance of getting door prizes." Holly and Connie announced a "Casting Call" late last year and began formal auditions for those who were interested in performing on February 27. As of this writing, a total of 16 acts had auditioned to perform. "I thought we were ready for a new challenge, and when we discussed the possibility with the Lifestyle Director Debbie Kent, we all agreed it was a great idea," said Connie.

"Some people regularly participate in talenttypes of activities in our community, but our hope was that we could draw a few more people who don't normally get involved and don't want the commitment of meeting every week, as the Songsters and Steppers," agreed Connie and Holly. "I think we have been successful.” What can the audience expect at the show? "We have the Steppers doing a couple of group numbers. Two of the Songsters are collaborating with the Steppers. That's a first time! The ATMS will sing and the Steppers will dance," said Holly. "We'll also have a "Boy Band" playing music from the '70s. So much of the music will be familiar that people will be tapping their feet and singing along," added Connie. "We'll also have a magician, poetry reading, independent singers and the Ukulele Strummers; they have grown to 21 people," added Holly, who is a member of the group. "Everyone in the community was invited to perform in the Variety Show," they explained. "There were certain criteria including, at least one person in the group had to be a Sun City Aliante resident. We asked them to limit their performance to approximately five minutes from start to finish, and we had to see their act to ensure there was nothing inappropriate. We wanted to keep it family friendly." What motivated you both to initiate this event? "I like to help people bring out their inner talents and enjoy music. Music is just so therapeutic. I thought it would be good for people who normally don't perform to come out and shine. I wanted to give our neighbors and friends a chance to be in the limelight," emphasized Holly. "What motivates me more than anything else is to help people who like to perform and like to sing, but are afraid to do it on their own. I like to encourage them, to coach them, to help them, to move them into the 'wow' I can do it; that is fantastic," stressed Connie. What, if any, challenges did you have to overcome? "Getting the word out was very challenging, because people may not feel they have enough talent to actually be in a show; so, we did the inviting," said Connie. "We went right up to people and asked them if they would be interested and some people said 'Yes.' Then we offered our help in

finding a song or choregraphing a number." "We reached out and pulled people in. I think people are afraid. Getting up in front of your peers can be really hard," added Holly. "In addition, there are some technical challenges that we're working out. "Everyone is encouraged to purchase tickets at the Front Desk as soon as possible because space is limited. The cost is $10 for resident/$15 for guests. "Please come and enjoy the show!' encouraged Connie and Holly.
Our Mistresses of Ceremonies Holly Strasser moved to Sun City Aliante four years ago from southern Colorado. She holds a bachelor's and a master's degree in music-related disciplines. She taught music education K- Grade 12 and was also a music therapist working with adolescents. She met her husband, Tim, while performing as a singer in the musical "Promises, Promises" in Chicago. They chose Sun City Aliante because of the activities, and they were not disappointed. Connie Bensler and her husband, Jim, moved from Alaska. In 2007, they purchased a home in Sun City Aliante. Until recently, they were snowbirds spending summer in Alaska and winters here. Connie worked in public education for 37 years. After teaching for 10 years, she became an administrator for 27 years. She and Jim met in Colorado on a blind date, and decided to venture to Alaska for a couple years, which turned into 50 years. They love it in Sun City Aliante!

Invitations to Respond to the 2020 Census Questionnaire to Be Mailed to Households in March Women's History Month: March 2020
Between March 12 and March 20, invitations to participate in the 2020 Census will start arriving in households across the country. Millions of Americans are applying for 2020 Census jobs, more than 270,000 local and national organizations are engaged, and the majority of U.S. households will receive an invitation to respond to help ensure that every person in the U.S. is counted. “The 2020 Census is on mission, on schedule, and on budget to promote an accurate count,” said Census Bureau Director Dr. Steven Dillingham. “Response is important because statistics from the census are used in distributing where hundreds of billions in funding for school lunches, hospitals, roads and much more. The invitations will remind respondents to include everyone living in the household, whether they are related or not. This includes young children. Your response will impact communities for the next decade.” “The Census Bureau has successfully tested its data collection systems, has built backup systems to support resilient operations, and is ready to receive responses from all around the country,” added Dillingham. This invitation will include instructions on how to respond to the 2020 Census online or by phone. By April 1, most households will have received an invitation delivered either by mail or by a census taker. In areas of the country that are less likely to respond online, a paper questionnaire will be included in the initial mailing to households. Reminder mailings will be sent to households that do not respond, and in the fourth mailing every household that has not yet responded will receive a paper questionnaire. Once households receive invitations, please respond to the 2020 Census by using the provided Census ID. If a household is unable to enter the Census ID people can still respond, by providing an address. Whether people respond online, by phone or by mail, it is important to respond right away. Below is a timeline of how and when the Census Bureau will invite households to complete the 2020 Census questionnaire: The U.S. Census Bureau has been recruiting hundreds of thousands of people for temporary jobs across the United States and Puerto Rico. The 2020 Census is your chance to play a part in history! Temporary census positions offer the perfect opportunity to earn extra money while helping your community. Most 2020 Census positions will last several weeks. They feature: Competitive wages, Weekly paychecks, Flexible hours and Paid Training. You will find details about applying for a job online with the Census Bureau at the website 2020census.gov/jobs.

The roots of National Women's History Month go back to March 8, 1857, when women from various New York City factories staged a protest over working conditions. The first Women's Day celebration in the United States was also in New York City in 1909, but Congress did not establish National Women's History Week until 1981 to be commemorated annually the second week of March. In 1987, Congress expanded the week to a month. Every year since, Congress has passed a resolution for Women's History Month, and the president has issued a proclamation.

IRS Tax Tips: Standard and Itemized Deductions Individuals have a choice of either taking a standard deduction or itemizing their deductions. Taxpayers can use the method that gives you the lower tax. Due to tax law changes in the last couple years, people who itemized in the past might not want to continue to do; so, it's important for all taxpayers to look into which deduction to take. Here are some details about the two methods to help you understand which they should use: Standard deduction The standard deduction amount adjusts every year and can vary by filing status. The standard deduction amount depends on the taxpayer's filing status, whether you are 65 or older or blind, and whether another taxpayer can claim you as a dependent. Taxpayers who are age 65 or older on the last day of the year and don't itemize deductions are entitled to a higher standard deduction. Itemized deductions Taxpayers may need to itemize deductions because they can't use the standard deduction. They may also itemize deductions when this amount is greater than their standard deduction. A taxpayer may benefit by itemizing deductions for things that include: • State and local income or sales taxes • Real estate and personal property taxes • Mortgage interest • Mortgage insurance premiums • Personal casualty and theft losses from a federally declared disaster • Donations to a qualified charity • Unreimbursed medical and dental expenses that exceed 7.5% of adjusted gross income
You might wonder what, besides these numbers, comes out of reporting scams and other consumer issues to the FTC. Well, because of reports, the FTC and its law enforcement partners are able to investigate the people and companies that trick people into paying money. Your reports help build and bring those cases, which also helps them enforce laws that stop scams and other dishonest business practices that take people's money. In fact, during 2019, FTC law enforcement actions led to more than $232 million in refunds to people who lost money. More than 1.9 million people cashed checks mailed by the FTC. And, in the last four years, people have cashed more than one billion dollars in FTC refund checks. That's real money back into people's pockets. So if you've spotted a scam, keep telling us about it at ftc.gov/complaint. If you need more information about these top frauds, visit ftc.gov/imposters, and ftc.gov/giftcards. (Source: Monica Vaca, Associate Director, FTC Division of Consumer Response and Operations)
Individual itemized deductions may be limited. Form 1040, Schedule A Instructions can help determine what limitations may apply. For more information, visit https://go.usa.gov/xdKBs.
Top Frauds Each year, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) takes a hard look at the number of reports people made to our Consumer Sentinel Network. In fact, during 2019, the FTC received more than 3.2 million reports from people. They read what you said, and crunched the numbers. Here's what you told the FTC in 2019. •
Imposter scams was the number one fraud reported to Sentinel in 2019. People reported losing more than $667 million to imposters, who often pretended to be calling from the government or a well-known business, a romantic interest, or a family member with an emergency. When people lost money, they most frequently reported paying scammers with a gift card.
•
Social Security imposters were the top government imposter scam reported. There were 166,190 reports about the Social Security scam, and the median individual loss was $1,500.
•
Phone calls were the number one-way people reported being contacted by scammers. While most people said they hung up on those calls, those who lost money reported a median loss of $1,000 in 2019.
