TIPS FROM HEALTH EXPERTS In the meantime, here are some tips from health experts regarding what you can do to help prevent contracting and spreading both the flu and Coronavirus: • Wash your hands frequently in warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds or with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Experts say washing your hands frequently has the potential to prevent 40-60% of illness. • Cough or sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. • Put distance between yourself and other people who are ill. • Stay home if you show signs of illness. • Get a flu shot if you haven't already. Although the standard flu shot will not prevent the spread of coronavirus, it will prevent you from getting the flu. If you get Coronavirus while you are sick with the flu, you are more likely to suffer adverse effects. • Wash your hands immediately after touching common hard surfaces or shaking hands with others. Who is at Higher Risk? According to the CDC, those who are at a higher risk of getting very sick from this illness. This includes: • Older adults • People who have serious chronic medical conditions like: - Heart disease, Diabetes and Lung disease Watch for symptoms and emergency warning signs Pay attention for potential COVID-19 symptoms including, fever, cough, shortness of breath. If you feel like you are developing these symptoms, call your doctor. If you develop warning signs for COVID-19, seek medical attention immediately. In adults, emergency warning signs include: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath Persistent pain or pressure in the chest New confusion or inability to arouse • Bluish lips or face

• • •

The CDC recommends you cover over your mouth and nose with a cloth face cover when you are around others. You could spread COVID-19 to others even if you do not feel sick. Everyone should wear a cloth face cover when they must go out in public, for example to the grocery store or to pick up other necessities. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. The cloth face cover is meant to protect other people in case you are infected. Do NOT use a facemask meant for a healthcare worker. Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing. For instructions on to make a facial mask, please go the following website https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-facecoverings.html For more information about the Coronavirus Disease, please visit the websites for The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at https://www.cdc.gov/ or the World Health Organization (WHO) at https://www.who.int/ With all of our efforts and the support of our team, we feel confident that we are doing all we can to make our Community Center a safe place for you. We will continue to monitor the situation daily and communicate with you through the website (www.suncityaliante.org), eBlasts and The Breeze on a regular basis as needed. Sincerely, Sun City Aliante Community Association Board of Directors

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Customer Service Office Hours Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Residents, I will not repeat all the advice that we have been receiving on how to prevent exposing ourselves to the Covid-19 virus. Suffice it to say that these are unique and trying times, and I congratulate the way you have handled the closing of our community center and all the unknown times that will certainly lie ahead of us. As of this writing, work continues on the expansion project. Although it will probably not be finished by the end of April, I am hopeful that I will have a better idea of the opening in a month or so and will advise you as soon as I know a realistic date. Association business continues albeit at a diminished rate. Bills are being paid and our maintenance team is thoroughly scrubbing and sanitizing the entire community center in anticipation of the re-opening. Some committee meetings and community center ad-hoc committees are being held via teleconferencing. A positive result of the virus is that we are once again happy to see our neighbors and people are genuinely eager to talk to others as we walk our community. One can only hope that the spirit of togetherness and caring will continue after the virus is a memory. Please stay safe and take care of each other. Respectfully submitted, Warren M. 10 WAYS TO MAINTAIN A POSITIVE OUTLOOK DURING TIMES OF CHAOS As I write this message and reflect on the past few weeks, I recognize that all of our lives have been upended by these unprecedented and extraordinary times. It seems one day we were going about our routine activities, and suddenly the next day we were experiencing a new eerie dynamic filled with uncertainty, anxiety, and changes in our lives that were occurring at an astonishingly rapid pace. We picked up new ways of living along with new terminology, not imagined just a month prior: social distancing; self-isolation; shelter in place; non-essential businesses. Many communities around the world are ceasing operations, shutting their doors, and facing an uncertain future. As we experience this exceptional situation, there are things you can do to take care of yourself and keep you healthy in body and spirit. Actually, these suggestions may be helpful even in steady and more certain times. 1. Channel your energy into something positive. Find joy in small things. Establish a routine. Show greater compassion to others. Appreciate life's simple processes. 2. Go outside and take a walk in our beautiful community – even a short one. Walking is not only good to maintain a healthy body; it can lift your spirits and clear your mind. Appreciate the many desert blooms that are bursting forth with their colors and aromas. Take a moment to listen for the chatter and songs of birds. And don't forget to take in the vistas of our mountains with all their grandeur, character and strength. 3. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy. Keeping your body hydrated will help you stay energized and feeling good. Resist the temptation to snack on foods with high calories, sugar, salt or fat. Keep nutritious foods handy. 4. Stay connected with friends – both old and new. Old friends have been through many things with you and can provide you with support and a sense of worth. Together you can reminisce on fun times of the past. New friends can be an opportunity to learn more about each other and about yourself. continued on page 12

Besides what we have done in the communications area, Maintenance Supervisor, Juan Macias, and his team have been busy deep-cleaning, sanitizing and organizing the Community Center from top to bottom. Here are several examples: •

Vista Room: Cleaned and waxed the floor and cleaned the cabinets. Storage Room: Waxed the floor in the area across from the Vista Room.

In addition to meticulously cleaning and sanitizing, we completed or will complete these projects: •

• • • • •

In early May, we will install a new automatic fill system for the pool and spa which will regulate and test water to more efficiently keep the chemicals balanced. Repaired six treadmills in the Fitness Area. Completed painting of all curbs in front of the fire hydrants throughout the community. Assembled a new ping pong table. Installed a sound device on the roof of each building to get rid of the pigeons. Changed the air filters throughout the community center and lights in multiple rooms.

They will continue to clean and sanitize more areas during the closure so when we are ready to reopen, we will have a sparkling clean and sanitized Community Center for you to enjoy. LIFESTYLE NEWS Dear Residents, In a time unlike anything we've gone through, we want you to know the Sun City Aliante residents are in our thoughts and prayers and we look forward to safe and healthy days ahead. It's been a challenge not being able to live the life we've known since this medical issue surfaced, but with following recommended protocol and guidelines, keeping a positive attitude, and human kindness, we will conqueror this enemy. The Lifestyle Department has been working with various organizations to keep apprised of the COVID-19 situation. Transportation companies, venues, sporting events, and entertainment box offices have all stayed in contact and are taking it one day at a time. Fitness Corner Two of our amazing Fitness Instructors are staying connected through their own media. Virtual Zumba is being offered by Christie White on-line through Facebook. Go to Christie Day-White, friend her, and she will add you to her group. As the restrictions are lifted, more events will be promoted. Movies that we had on our schedule will be shown at a later date when it is safe for everyone. Families are spending more time together, people are pausing and reflecting on their life, more people are walking (and dogs, too), lawns and yards have never looked better, and people are becoming neighborly helping those who need assistance. Observe beautiful sunrises and sunsets and find something special in every day. Send virtual hugs...Miss you all so very much! Stay safe and healthy, and “We'll get through this together”! COMMUNITY STANDARDS Dear Residents: Thank you for being part of our great Sun City Aliante community. During these unprecedented times, we want to do our best to stay in touch with you through The Breeze magazine, our frequent eBlasts and postings on the Sun City Aliante website. While we can't meet with you in our offices, you still have access to us. You can contact us by email at suncityaliante@fsrnevada.com or by phone at 702-638-5000. We will check messages and return your email or phone call within a reasonable amount of time. I know you have been responding to the 2020 Census. We have another important request. Every two years, the residents of Sun City Aliante are asked to fill out an Age Verification Survey that is used to collect information to ensure protection of the age restricted community and tax status of Sun City Aliante under state and federal laws. For your convenience, a 2020 Age Verification Survey will be included in the August issue of The Breeze. Homeowners please note: If you have a tenant living in your residence, you are responsible for insuring that your tenant completes the form and turns it into Sun City Aliante management. With the closure of the Community Center, HOA Assessments/payments will not be accepted at the Center. However, assessments for Sun City Aliante and the Aliante Master Association can be dropped off at the Aliante Master Association Office, located at 2760 West Deer Springs Way, Suite # 104 in the Aliante Marketplace near Smith's grocery store. The office will allow for drop-offs through the door, but no face to face meeting will occur. Your HOA payments may also be mailed to the following address: Sun City Aliante or Aliante Master Association, c/o FirstService Residential, P.O. Box 62049, Newark, NJ 07101. Please place the payments in separate envelopes with the respective community noted. Friendly reminder: please do not feed the birds, rabbits or other animals. Feeding them contributes to an unmanageable population growth and can have a significant impact on human health and safety and plants and property. Bird feeders and bird houses are prohibited. (The only exception is hummingbird feeders which are allowed because hummingbirds won't nest in them.) A very popular product to keep rabbits and other animals away from your flower beds or gardens is “Liquid Fence Deer & Rabbit Repellent.” It's harmless to plants and animals. You simply mix it with water and apply with a garden sprayer or sprinkler. This product is available at Lowe's and online. You may also want to consider placing green mesh (not silver) around areas you want to protect. If you are planning to change anything on the outside of your home, you must have written prior approval of the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). This means approval is needed for patios, pools, spas, play equipment, exterior painting, replacement of trees and plants, fences, gates, walls, solar panels, security doors and wall art. Don't make an investment in anything on the outside of your home, until you have ARC approval. It could cost you more if you have to remove it due to no approval. Currently the ARC Committee is not reviewing, approving or denying applications until the Community Center reopens. We all look forward to returning to the Community Center and enjoying our wide array of exciting activities and events. In the interim, please stay healthy and safe. 5. Laugh – it really is the best medicine! Laughter can provide good exercise for your lungs and can also elevate your spirits. Studies have shown that laughter can allow you to see difficult circumstances in a different way. It can also decrease stress levels and can bring us joy. 6. Smile and share your smile. Smiling is contagious. It can elevate your mood, and when others see you smiling, they are very likely to smile back and increase their own mood. 7. Treasure your loved ones. Let them know how you are doing and find out how they are doing. Tell them you love them. 8. Pay it forward. When you pay it forward, you're usually changing someone else's circumstances for the better. Besides improving your mental health by boosting feelings of happiness and positivity, performing acts of kindness can benefit your physical health, too. Ultimately, the person paying it forward grows as much as the person receiving the act of kindness.

9. Help others. Check in on your neighbors. Wave, smile, ask them how they are doing and if they need anything. Introduce yourself to those you do not already know. 10. Be grateful. Remember what you appreciate most. Focus on what you do have rather than what you wish you could have. Did you ever wonder why the members of your Board of Directors volunteer to put in countless hours of service to our community without compensation? It is because we care. We truly care about our community and our residents. While we cannot resolve every problem or issue, we always give it our very best, strive to make informed decisions, and make every effort to be fair. As we navigate these unchartered waters, you can rest assured that your Board and your community are here for you. Nancy Prince Director, Sun City Aliante Board of Directors Princen715@gmail.com

CLARK COUNTY PRIMARY ELECTION

SUN CITY ALIANTE 2020 ANNUAL MEETING AND BOD ELECTION

JUNE 9, 2020, PRIMARY ELECTION NOTICE OF ALL-MAIL BALLOT ELECTION

As of the candidate submission deadline on Monday, February 3 at 5 p.m., the Election Committee received five Board of Director's Candidate Interest Forms/Statements for the 2020 election.

Clark County Election Department, 965 Trade Dr., North Las Vegas, NV 89030

Because there were five open seats on the Board and five residents have submitted Candidate Interest Forms, there is no need for a formal election. At the February 12 Board of Directors meeting, Sonja Bankston-Cullen was appointed to the open seat, and she will serve until May 2020. Five Board Candidates (Wayne Headrick, Mark Pallans, Ed Sloman, Mark Smith and Sonja Bankston-Cullen) will be deemed elected by acclamation at the annual Homeowner's Meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. Sonja will serve the remainder of the one-year term ending May 2021. The above actions were made in accordance with Nevada law NRS 116.31034(5) which was explained in detail in the March issue of The Breeze under Sun City BOD Election 2020. Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, the time of May 13th Homeowners' Annual Meeting, originally scheduled to convene at 8 a.m., has been rescheduled to 10 a.m. The Board of Directors Executive Session will be held prior to the Annual Meeting at 9:15 a.m. The regular Board Meeting will begin immediately following the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting and Board will be held via teleconferencing, and you will be notified through the Eblast and the website with the details if you wish to join the teleconference. Even though there will be no formal election process this year, much time and effort have led us to this point in time. I would especially like to thank my hard-working committee members: Chris Wickliff, Kay Drewlo, Linda and Owen Egge, and Kathryn Brandel for all their input and cooperation. We will add one or two more members to the Committee in time for next year's election. Many thanks also to our Community Manager, Damian Carrasco; Assistant Manager and Compliance Director, Nelenie Aronce; and Breeze Editor and Publisher Trish Williamson for their efforts and input. Until next year, Larry Rothstein Chair, Sun City Aliante BOD Election Committee 2020

ALIANTE MASTER ASSOCIATION The next Aliante Master Association Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Master Association's office at 2760 West Deer Springs Way, Suite #104 in the Aliante Marketplace by the Smith's grocery store. All Sun City Aliante residents are encouraged to attend.

To help keep you, your family, and our community safer by limiting interactions that could spread the coronavirus, the June 9, 2020, Primary Election is being conducted entirely by mail ballot. On or before May 18, 2020, Clark County registered voters will receive a mail ballot packet from the Clark County Election Department which will include: • A ballot and instructions for voting a mail ballot; • A pre-addressed, postage-paid envelope that must be used for returning voted mail ballots; and • A list of mail ballot drop-off sites for voters to drop off their own voted mail ballot in-person, if they are unable to put their ballot in the mail. Registered Voters who do not receive their packet by May 18, 2020, should contact us at (702) 455-VOTE (8683). We STRONGLY ENCOURAGE VOTERS TO MAIL THEIR BALLOT rather than drop it off in-person. Please read this entire notice for important details. CONTACT INFORMATION WILL HELP US ASSIST VOTERS We strongly encourage all voters who do not have their current email or phone number listed in their registration records to contact us as soon as possible and no later than MAY 12, 2020, to provide that information. This is important because if a mail ballot has no signature on the envelope, or if the signature does not match the one the Election Department has on file, we will need to contact the voter as soon as possible to resolve this issue. To check if your phone number or e-mail is in your voter registration records or to add it if it is not. • Log-in on the Secretary of State's website at www.registertovotenv.gov; or • Send an e-mail to elinfo@ClarkCountyNV.com; or • Call us at (702) 455-VOTE (8683). •

Please note that NRS 293.558 requires the Clark County Election Department to keep your e-mail address CONFIDENTIAL. Meaning, it may not be given to third parties. We strongly urge voters to register to vote or to make any necessary updates as soon as possible so they may avoid having to go to the Election Department offices. • May 12, 2020, is the last day to register to vote or update your existing voter registration by mail for the June 9, 2020, Primary Election. • May 21, 2020, is the last day to register to vote or update your existing registration on the Secretary of State's website at www.registertovotenv.gov.

JOIN THE BOOK CLUB TO EXPAND YOUR MIND AND MEET NEW FRIENDS By Trish Williamson

“The real purpose of reading books is to trap your mind into doing its own thinking.” ~ Christopher Morley Are you aware that we have an active, vibrant book club right here at Sun City Aliante? If you're an avid reader, want to strengthen your cognitive skills, challenge your mind, have fun and meet new friends, you should put joining this club on your “To Do” list. Originally established in 2005, the Book Club is one of our oldest clubs, and it's still going strong thanks to two longtime members: Jeannette Smith and Kathryn Brandel. Currently, there are approximately 25 members who meet monthly. “We like to read, and we like to have conversations about what we read,” explained Jeannette. “Right from the start, we established criteria for the books we discuss. Because we meet once a month, we decided the length of the book should be no more than 300 to 400 pages. The most important thing is the book should be intellectually challenging; so, we would have something interesting to talk about.” “The book should have real substance and be thought-provoking” added Kathryn. “The person who nominates the book must have read it; and they must be convinced it's worthy for an hour's discussion. Some of the books we read have discussion questions provided by the publisher.” Club members read a wide variety of books including, fiction, nonfiction, biographies, old favorites, classics and bestsellers. Examples of recently read books include best sellers, such as, “Educated” and “Where the Crawdads Sing” the historical novel “Island of Sea Women” which took place in Korea; and “Midnight in Broad Daylight.” You can view the entire list of books on the Book Club's website: www.scaliante.com or at our Sun City Aliante website www. suncityaliante.org under Clubs. Twice annually, at their April and October meetings, they review the recommendations from Club members and vote on the book selections for the next six months; they also ask for volunteer facilitators for each month to direct the discussions. “One of the criteria is that the book is available in the library,” explained Jeannette. “That's why we have the six-month process; so, people have a chance to reserve the book ahead of time at the library and avoid the expense of purchasing a book.” Kathryn and Jeannette enjoy the Book Club because they are stimulated by the discussions. “Some of the best discussions we've had were on books that we didn't particularly enjoy; but the more we talked about the book, the more interesting it became. We were amazed at how many times we end up liking a book more, because it brought us to see so many different perspectives,” said Kathryn. Jeannette and Kathryn welcome you to join the Book Club. “We always want to add new members and get input from our male and female members,” they agreed. Jeannette retired as Director of IT at AT&T in 2004 and moved to Sun City Aliante. “I was in one of the first meetings regarding miniaturing of the cellular phone, and I remember people wondering why anyone would want to carry a phone around in their pocket. Who would have thought?” she reflected.

Shown (l-r are Jeannette Smith and Kathryn Brandel)

Kathryn worked as a social worker in child welfare. Later she became an educator, overseeing undergraduate and graduate degree programs for adults in the workforce. She moved to Sun City Aliante in 2005.

THE VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK & PATIO “LEST WE FORGET”

The Sun City Aliante Veterans Club has unveiled plans for a new Veterans Memorial located on the front side of the newly expanded and enclosed Community Center to the left of the main entrance. The project was spearhead by The Memorial Committee of the Veterans Club, headed Sy Nielson, in coordination with the Property & Grounds Committee and Gothic Landscape Company. The new memorial is designed to serve as to a place to remember and reflect and is dedicated to all members of the United States Armed Forces. Surrounding the monument, will be approximately 800 inscribed bricks (5 ½ X 11-inch) laid in a grid pattern. Residents are invited to purchase a brick, and to have it inscribed as a lasting remembrance for a loved one, family member or friend; the person being recognized does not have to be a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. All residents are invited to participate in the Sun City Aliante Veterans Club's Commemorative Brick Project. Buy a brick and remember a loved one… IT'S MORE THAN A BRICK. IT'S THEIR STORY. The cost per engraved brick is $130. For more information, please contact Sy Nielson at synlo@yahoo.com or 702-234-9183.

NEWS & NOTES

CONSUMER ALERTS The Federal Trade Commission And Internal Revenue Service Warn You To Avoid Scammers Older adults may be hard hit by the coronavirus - and scammers prey on that. If you or someone you know must stay at home and needs help with errands, you'll want to know about this latest scam.

Scammers are offering help with errands, and running off with your money If you're an older adult or a caregiver for one, you may need help picking up groceries, prescriptions, and other necessary supplies. If someone you don't know offers to help, be wary. Some scammers offer to buy supplies but never come back with the goods or your money. It's usually safer to find a trusted friend or neighbor or arrange a delivery with a well-known company. If you're ordering supplies online, know who you're buying from. Online sellers may claim to have in-demand products, like cleaning, household, and medical supplies when, in fact, they don't. Use an established delivery service, or order directly from the store. Many grocery stores and pharmacies are offering contact-less delivery. If you need additional help for yourself or a loved one, the Eldercare Locator at https://eldercare.acl.gov/, a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, can connect you to services for older adults and their families. You can also call 1-800-677-1116. SOCIAL SECURITY SCAMS - In addition, while most of you are home, practicing social distancing and frequent hand washing to avoid the Coronavirus, remember that scammers are still busy trying to take advantage of people. Some scammers are pretending to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and trying to get your Social Security number or your money. • Do not trust caller ID. Scam calls may show up on caller ID as the Social Security Administration and look like the agency's real number, but it's not the SSA calling. • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized. • Don't verify your Social Security number or any other personal information to anyone who calls out of the blue. If you already did, visit IdentityTheft.gov/SSA to find out what steps you can take to protect your credit and your identity. • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time. • Talk about it. If you're getting these calls, chances are your friends and family are too. Please talk with them about it. People who know about scams are much less likely to fall for them. So, by discussing them, you are helping protect people you care for and people in your community. IRS SCAMS - That's not the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) calling, texting, or emailing! Scammers are sending official-looking messages - including postcards with a password to be used online to "access" or "verify" your payment or direct deposit information. Taxpayers should be aware that aggressive criminals pose as IRS agents in hopes of stealing money or personal information. The tax filing season is a prime time for phone scams because people are thinking about taxes. Here are some tell-tale signs of a tax scam along with actions taxpayers can take if they receive a scam call. The IRS will never: • Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes. • Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have the taxpayer arrested for not paying. • Demand that taxes be paid without giving taxpayers the opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed.

18

WWW.SUNCITYALIANTE.ORG | THE BREEZE

Call out of the blue about an unexpected tax refund.

Taxpayers who receive these phone calls should: Hang up the phone immediately. Report the call to TIGTA using their IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting form or by calling 800-366-4484. • Report the number to phishing@irs.gov and be sure to put IRS Phone Scam in the subject line.

• •

The IRS will not contact you to collect your personal information or bank account. It's a scam. For trusted information and updates about IRS payments - including eligibility, how to sign up for direct deposit, or where to file a short tax form - always start with irs.gov/coronavirus. Learn how to avoid scams by subscribing to the FTC's consumer alerts, and report scams to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. MEDICARE SCAMS – Scammers might call to offer things like a “COVID-19 kit,” “Coronavirus package,” or Medicare benefits related to the virus. But they'll ask you to verify personal information like your bank account, Social Security, or Medicare numbers. If you get a call from someone who says they're a Medicare representative and they ask for this information, hang up. It's a scam, not Medicare calling. Report it to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint. The FTC is getting a lot of reports about fraudulent calls, texts, and emails coming from people pretending to be from the Social Security Administration, IRS, Census, USCIS and the FDIC. These fake government messages might say that you're approved for money, can get quick relief payments, or get cash grants due to the Coronavirus. Scammers might also promise you small business loans or send a (phishing) alert that a check is ready to be picked up. These are all scams, and none of those messages come from a government agency. If you respond to these calls or messages, they might ask you for money, personal information, or both. Don't give it. And remember that the surest sign of a scam is anyone who asks you to send cash, pay with a gift card, wire money, or pay with cryptocurrency. Stay on top of all types of imposter scams by visiting ftc.gov/imposters, and sign up for the FTC's Consumer Alerts to get the latest on all kinds of scams.

COMMEMORATING MEMORIAL DAY

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history and required the establishment of the country's first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s, Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers. In 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo-which first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866-was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. For decades, Memorial Day was officially observed on May 30, the date General John Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday. Today this holiday honors all men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces. (Source: www.history.com)

HEALTH & FITNESS TIPS FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION TO STAY PHYSICALLY ACTIVE DURING SELF QUARANTINE Staying at home for prolonged periods of time can pose a significant challenge for remaining physically active. Sedentary behavior and low levels of physical activity can have negative effects on the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals. Self-quarantine can also cause additional stress and challenge the mental health of citizens. WHO recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of both. These recommendations can still be achieved even at home, with no special equipment and with limited space. The following are some tips on how to stay active and reduce sedentary behavior while at home in self-quarantine:

Take short active breaks during the day. Short bouts of physical activity add up to the weekly recommendations.

Follow an online exercise class. Take advantage of the wealth of online exercise classes. Many of these are free and can be found on YouTube. Walk. Even in small spaces, walking around or walking on the spot, can help you remain active. If you have a call, stand or walk around your home while you speak, instead of sitting down.

Relax. Meditation and deep breaths can help you remain calm.

For optimal health, it is also important to remember to eat healthily and stay hydrated. WHO recommends drinking water instead of sugarsweetened beverages. Limit or avoid alcoholic beverages. Ensure plenty of fruits and vegetables, and limit the intake of salt, sugar and fat. Prefer whole grains rather than refined foods.

A highly acclaimed actress and comedian whose work spans Broadway, film and television, Carol Burnett remains best known for “The Carol Burnett Show,” which ran for 11 years, averaged 30 million viewers per week and earned 25 Emmy Awards, making it one of the most honored shows in television history. THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER Exactly three years after the end of World War I, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was dedicated at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia during an Armistice Day ceremony presided over by President Warren G. Harding.

Two days before, an unknown American soldier, who had fallen somewhere on a World War I battlefield, arrived at the nation's capital from a military cemetery in France. On Armistice Day, in the presence of President Harding and other government, military, and international dignitaries, the unknown soldier was buried with highest honors beside the Memorial Amphitheater. As the soldier was lowered to his final resting place, a two-inch layer of soil brought from France was placed below his coffin so that he might rest forever atop the earth on which he died. The Tomb of the Unknown Solider is considered the most hallowed grave at Arlington Cemetery, America's most sacred military cemetery. The tombstone itself, designed by sculptor Thomas Hudson Jones, was not completed until 1932, when it was unveiled bearing the description "Here Rests in Honored Glory an American Soldier Known but to God." The World War I unknown was later joined by the unidentified remains of soldiers from America's other major 20th century wars and the tomb was put under permanent guard by special military sentinels.

In 1998, a Vietnam War unknown, who was buried at the tomb for 14 years, was disinterred from the Tomb after DNA testing indicated his identity. Air Force Lieutenant Michael Blassie was returned to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri, and was buried with military honors, including an F-15 jet "missing man" flyover and a lone bugler sounding taps. CHARTERED CLUBS

8BALLERS POET LAUREATE After a long hiatus from playing pool in our Aliante Billiards Room, the Aliante 8Ballers are anxiously anticipating our new tables and exciting game room at completion of the Community Center expansion. No one in our club is more excited than our own Mort Loeb. Mort is a man of many talents. Besides being one of our most improved 8Ballers on the pool table, Mort is an accomplished ballroom dancer, writer, and poet. Did I mention that he just celebrated his 90th birthday? In anticipation of our new space, and just because he likes to put a smile on all our faces, our official 8Ballers Poet Laureate penned this little ditty: A jovial bunch of folks ya see, and the Eight Ballers is their name. They play for fun and play to win but not for money or fame. Getting together whenever they can and showing their skills it's true. You can always join 'em if you'd like, won't cost ya a penny or two. They're part of Sun City Aliante where soon with five tables will be. But other folks can join right in for darts & shuffleboard ya see. So, drop on by and check 'em out; sit around and watch what they do. Or jump right in and play a game; you'll be so darn glad it's true.

We are always looking for new members, and we have three teachers who are willing to help anyone who may be interested

PAN CLUB

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS Seniors with Warm Hearts is looking toward the future and moving forward with their volunteer efforts. Due to the circumstances we have all experienced in the last couple of months, the PKD Walk, which was scheduled for May 2, was postponed to October 24. Members look forward to participating and volunteering for this great event in the fall. This summer they are also expecting to assist many of the organizations here in the Las Vegas Valley that they work with on a regular basis. Some of the organizations include Serving Our Kids Foundation, Baby's Bounty, Project 150, Street Teens, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley and SAFE House, to name a few. They will also prepare to combine their annual food drive with their school supply drive; more information will be available next month. Their next meeting is scheduled on Thursday, June 18. New members are always welcome. In the meantime, if you are interested in finding out more information about the organizations they support or joining their group, please contact Carol Hoyt at 702-647-1289 or Karen Nutto at 201-7879391.

VETERANS AUXILIARY Congratulations to the Veterans Auxiliary Officers for 2020 – 2021! Donna Lawhead and Lynda Towers are the Co-Chairs. Martha Martin will continue as Secretary and Pam Vonderohe will be Treasurer. Nancy Wiegand will continue to oversee fundraising for the Veterans Auxiliary. The Auxiliary hope that everyone is doing well and healthy. They plan to resume their normal activities as soon as possible. The Veteran's BBQ Picnic on May 9 has been cancelled. A new date is TBA in an upcoming issue of The Breeze.

SUN CITY ALIANTE VETERANS CLUB As I write this article at the end of March, I hope by May that everything is back to normal for our community and the Veterans Club activities.

Wanda Tacey

We had a Spring Flag Retirement Ceremony with Troop 102 scheduled for April 25 and our Annual Picnic for May 9. Both events are cancelled. A new date is TBA in an upcoming issue of the Breeze.

Our Memorial Committee has finalized plans for the new location of the Veterans Memorial. The plans for the rededication of the memorial will be announced, following the opening of the new community center. We welcome the community to participate in this event.

If you're a card player, or enjoy any games, and are not familiar with Pan (“panguingue”), you might just love this game. It incorporates some of the aspects of gin rummy and poker, and has some oddball rules that make the game a lot of fun!

Our March 17 club meeting was cancelled due to the closure of the Community Center. Because there was one nomination for each of the elected board positions, The SCAL Veterans Club Board for April 2020 to March 2021 was elected by acclamation.

An ideal game has 7 or 8 players at a table; players strive to have two or more tables; so they are attempting to attract more players. They play at the Community Center on Monday evenings and Friday afternoons.
