Happy Summer! “Instructors know how to beat the sweltering heat, not fit for man or beast” I do know however, where there is a cool place you should be thinking about. The classroom. There is an opportunity here at the PHCC-NV to become an instructor for our apprenticeship. Nice cool classrooms with eager minded students with the desire to pursue the plumbing profession. Becoming an instructor makes you more valuable not only to yourself but your employer and the industry. While going through the study books and the code book with your students, you learn things you didn't know or have forgotten. On the other hand, having students brings reliability to you and your customers. These are people that you can depend on. They are drug free and have been interviewed for the program. They are the best of the best when it comes to caring about what they are doing each and every day. Lastly, as an apprentice, you will be learning a trade. The plumbing trade. The single most important trade in the world. We need you to learn and respect the proper installation of plumbing systems. Without the plumbing professional, there would be a much greater need for disease control doctors and morticians. That's a fact!!! I do hope everyone reading this has a wonderful summer this year. Be safe and stay cool !!!

APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING INSTRUCTORS WANTED 6TH ANNUAL CONTRACTOR’S TRAINING DAY EVENT

8 9 11 12 13

Hello,

The Nevada State Contractors Board invites you to attend its 6th Annual Contractor’s Training Day Event!

My name is John Smith. And I started plumbing by mere happenstance.

WHEN: Thursday, August 29th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (noon)

THE APPRENTICE

EXPERIENCE

I was working through a temporary employment agency when I met Howard Arata, the owner of HTA plumbing and mechanical. At the time I was having a great deal of trouble finding permanent employment. Howard Arata took a chance and hired me on. When the opportunity to go to school for the trade came into play, I will have to say, I was reluctant. Because, to be honest, school as a whole is not my favorite subject. But Howard convinced me it would not be a waste of my time. So, I accepted the challenge.

WHAT: Four training sessions will be offered covering topics related to contractor compliance from various state and local agencies; navigating and understanding construction-related legal issues; contracting best practices and pitfalls to avoid; and a presentation on Nevada’s lien laws.

I have learned an incredible amount about the trade. And I am thankful for the knowledge I have acquired. And thankful for Howard Arata keeping me employed so I can keep my education going.

This is a FREE training open to all individuals within the industry, including licensed contractors, staff members, and anyone who finds the presentation topics valuable.

Here I am now in my 4th year. I still can't stand school! But, I will say, that I have met, studied with and worked with some wonderful people. And if given the opportunity, I would make the choice again to attend PHCC of Nevada.

For any questions or to RSVP for the event, please contact Scott Smith at: SSmith@nscb.state.nv.us or call 702486-1165.”

Thankfully yours, John LeRoy Smith

WHY I JOINED THE PHCC-NV company was in need of more qualified people. And in a single moment of clarity, I changed my mind. So I joined. And that decision changed everything. I joined the PHCC-NV in 2013. As I saw it, I could get some kids in school and be on my way to producing Journeymen. “Let's give this a try, we can support the industry along the way”. What I didn't realize, and what I couldn't have known without being a part of it, ended up being one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Written by Cory Hoopes, Focus Plumbing Mr. Hoopes you have John at the front. Again? What is this guy's deal? If there is something that really bothered me, it was a repetitive and unannounced drop in at the office. This particular gentleman, though very nice, was pushy and persistent. I'm not the door you want to knock on if you are trying to come into my home offering a free room of carpet cleaning. I'm not the door you want to knock on with an offer about a security system. The countless solicitors that cannot read “No Soliciting”, had burned a deep preconceived notion in my subconscious, leaving them no chance of selling me on anything before the handshake or greeting could happen. This particular salesman was trying to get me to join an association. Another association? I felt like if I joined another one, I'd be a part of the entire alphabet of abbreviations. This visit was his 7th in a 1 year period, and at this point, my “I'll think about it”, wasn't working anymore. He always kept returning, acting like it was the first time we had ever met. He would always leave a business card and a pamphlet and did his best to explain to me why my company needed to join this association. Looking back on it, I felt like most of the time, any “Opportunity” was just a sales pitch in disguise, and more likely than not, my contributions were generally always higher than the return of promises. 2013 was a big year for us, and my

The PHCC-NV is so much more than just a school. It is an invaluable, underrated network of leaders, teachers, mentors, colleagues, and students that are all characters in a truly remarkable world within an industry. The passion that exists within the walls at Sunpac, is an honor to be a part of. There is a contagious feeling of purpose and comradery that help me to raise my bar. I sit amazed, as I glance around the large crowds at the wonderful events, with rooms full of the industry's finest people. So here I am 6 years later. 18 Kids in school, 8 more incoming, 9 journeymen produced, and 2 teachers employed and empowered.I sometimes wonder where we would be without taking that chance. We have forged careers and continue to strengthen one of the most important industries in the world. As I see it… Trying great things with great people, make great things happen, and make you those great people. If you haven't joined the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association, please do. And if someone knocks at your door representing them, consider it an honor that they are in your building. If there is something I know about owners of Plumbing Companies, if it's not working, we stop doing it. At the PHCC dreaming is doing, and in this association it is done every day with the best, to make you the best. The last time I checked, all these phenomenal members I mention, they are still in it. phccnv.com | 5

APPRENTICE

EXPERIENCE

I never thought that I would grow up to be a plumber. It wasn't part of the plan at all. But one thing that I did know is that I hated the fact that I didn't know how to use tools or how to fix anything with the exception of my skateboard or bike. In fact, I was terrified of doing any plumbing repairs at home after my first attempt had failed miserably. The garbage disposal had gone out and I told my grandfather I would fix it. I did everything the instructions had said but I forgot one important part… I didn't knock out the knock out plug. So the dishwasher just drained through the air gap all the time and eventually ruined the countertops. At that point, my family decided I was no longer allowed to do any household repairs. I had decided on a career in Loss Prevention at the age of 23. I also had attended ITT tech to pursue a degree in criminal justice. My plan was to become a regional investigator specializing in organized retail crime. After a couple of semesters in school I had relocated from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and due to work and family never enrolled back into school. As time had passed and even with 6 years' experience in the industry, I could not find the type of advancement opportunities that I desired. After a bit of job seeking, I had found a plumbing company that was offering a 90day apprenticeship. It started at minimum wage and once you hit 90 days you bumped up to a slightly better wage and were given a work truck.

I was excited! I took the job even though I was taking a massive pay cut. I wanted to learn the trade and was willing to eat the dirt for 90 days. Luckily for me (although I didn't see it at the time) my employer had lost a major contract with a home warranty company and laid off a large chunk of their employees including myself. That same day I rushed out and started hitting plumbing companies for work. I eventually had met a Member Contractor with the PHCC-NV and they had directed me to the school. I eagerly submitted my application to the apprenticeship and within a couple of weeks, I was working again and attending school. I laugh at the concept of the “90 Day Apprenticeship”. This trade takes many years to master. Lots of mistakes, long days, headaches, ups and downs, and even at times will cause you to question why you chose this craft. But overall I find this trade highly rewarding. I've gained a skill set not a lot of people understand, a boost in confidence, problem-solving and analytical skills, a stronger work ethic and most importantly, the opportunity to provide for my family in ways I couldn't before. I am grateful for everyone at Aqua Plumbing for taking a chance on me and for everyone involved at the PHCC-NV for helping me gain a solid education and future. Justin Moreash phccnv.com | 9
