EDWARD WOLF
The Great Gatsby: THE EXTRAVAGANT LIFESTYLE
Baz Luhrmann successfully transformed a complex and nuanced novel into a lush visual experience, capturing both the beauty and the tragedy of the American Dream. The film, like the book, continues to invite new generations to reflect on the promises of wealth, power, and happiness, and how these can fade away like smoke at one of Gatsby’s legendary parties.
The Great Gatsby is a cinematic masterpiece that, much like the novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald on which it is based, explores the decadence, luxury, and excess of the Jazz Age in the United States. Directed by Baz Luhrmann and released in 2013, the film is a vibrant, visually dazzling, and extravagant adaptation that not only portrays the splendor of the high society of the 1920s but also the fragility of the American Dream.
The story revolves around Jay Gatsby (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), a mysterious and wealthy businessman who throws grand parties at his mansion in Long Island, New York, in the hopes of attracting the attention of his former love, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). Through the eyes of Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), an aspiring writer and Daisy’s cousin, the viewer witnesses the opulent and superficial life surrounding Gatsby and how his obsession with the past leads him to self-destruction.
The romance between Gatsby and Daisy is at the heart of the plot, but the film goes far beyond a simple love story. It is a tale about the pursuit of something unattainable, unchecked ambition, and the inevitable disappointment that follows those who place their faith in materialism.
Baz Luhrmann is known for his opulent and extravagant visual style, and The Great Gatsby is no exception. The director brings a stylized and vibrant version of the 1920s to the screen, where contemporary music such as hip-hop and jazz intertwines with the aesthetics of the era. This mix of modernity and nostalgia creates a unique atmosphere that transports the audience into a world of luxury, with lavish costumes, dazzling mansions, and extravagant parties.
The film was shot in Sydney, Australia, and the sets were designed to evoke both the grandeur and superficiality of the lifestyle of the American elite of the time. Every scene is carefully crafted to reflect the contrast between the external opulence and the inner emptiness of the characters.
Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a moving and complex portrayal of Jay Gatsby. His Gatsby is a man who has built himself up from poverty but remains vulnerable and tormented by his obsession with the past. DiCaprio masterfully captures both the seductive charisma and the quiet desperation of his character, especially in scenes where his confident facade begins to crumble.
Carey Mulligan plays Daisy Buchanan, a woman torn between her love for Gatsby and her loyalty to her husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Mulligan brings Daisy to life as a tragic figure, caught between two worlds but unable to make a brave decision. Tobey Maguire, as the narrator Nick Carraway, offers a more grounded and human perspective amidst the whirlwind of excess surrounding him.
The wealth and glamour depicted in The Great Gatsby are not just a showcase of the opulence of the 1920s but also a sharp critique of the superficiality of that society. The film’s characters live in a world
where personal worth is measured by wealth, where relationships are transactional, and where morality has been replaced by a desire for power and status.
Tom Buchanan is a perfect example of this: rich, arrogant, and racist, he represents the old aristocracy that looks down on “new money” individuals like Gatsby. Daisy, though seemingly the object of Gatsby’s desire, actually symbolizes the unattainable dream of perfection that can never be fully realized.
One of the central themes of The Great Gatsby is the American Dream, the promise of success and happiness that seemed within everyone’s reach in post-war America. However, the film (like the book) presents a critical view of this dream, showing it as an empty illusion. Gatsby embodies this myth—a man who has reached the pinnacle of wealth but remains deeply unhappy because he cannot obtain what he truly desires: Daisy’s love.
The American Dream, as portrayed in the film, is a shattered fantasy, a promise that can never fully be fulfilled. Material success does not guarantee personal fulfillment, and the past cannot be reclaimed.
One of the film’s most innovative aspects is its soundtrack, blending contemporary music with 1920s jazz. The collaboration between Baz Luhrmann and rapper Jay-Z resulted in a soundtrack that includes tracks by Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, and Florence + The Machine. This genre fusion is daring but serves to connect modern audiences with the unbridled energy of the Roaring Twenties.
Songs like “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Rey and “No Church in the Wild” by Jay-Z help reinforce the film’s themes of youth, fleeting beauty, and the struggle to reach something greater than oneself, even if that something is just an illusion.
The Great Gatsby received mixed reviews upon its release. While some praised Luhrmann’s bold visual style and characteristic flair, others felt the film sacrificed the subtlety of the original novel in favor of spectacle. However, Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance was universally acclaimed, as was the careful recreation of the era.
Commercially, the film was a resounding success, grossing over $350 million worldwide and winning two Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
THESE CHARACTERS
With their desires, flaws, and tragedies, form the core of The Great Gatsby, and through their interactions, the film examines the emptiness and broken promises of the American Dream.
JAY GATSBY (LEONARDO DICAPRIO)
Gatsby is the central figure of the story, a mysterious and extremely wealthy man who throws lavish parties in hopes of rekindling his former romance with Daisy Buchanan. His wealth comes from dubious means, and his life is driven by his obsession with recreating the past and winning back Daisy’s love. Gatsby symbolizes the American Dream in his quest to reinvent his life but also represents the hopelessness that often accompanies it.
DAISY BUCHANAN (CAREY MULLIGAN)
Daisy is a beautiful and shallow young woman married to Tom Buchanan. Although she shares a romantic past with Gatsby, she is unable to make decisions that would disrupt her privileged and comfortable lifestyle. Daisy represents the superficial society of the time and symbolizes the fragility of the American Dream, being desired for her beauty and status but lacking loyalty and emotional depth.
NICK CARRAWAY (TOBEY MAGUIRE)
Nick is the story’s narrator and Daisy’s cousin. He is an honest and morally upright man who comes to New York hoping to learn the bond business. While he initially admires Gatsby, he eventually becomes disillusioned with the character and the world of excess in which he is immersed. Nick serves as a bridge between the characters, observing their decadence and the consequences of their choices.
TOM BUCHANAN (JOEL EDGERTON)
Tom is Daisy’s arrogant and wealthy husband. He comes from an old-money family, which makes him feel superior to people like Gatsby, whom he considers “new money.” He is violent, racist, and manipulative, maintaining an extramarital affair with Myrtle Wilson. Tom symbolizes the hypocrisy and privilege of the upper class during the 1920s.
JORDAN BAKER (ELIZABETH DEBICKI)
Jordan is a professional golfer and a friend of Daisy’s. She is independent, cynical, and ambitious, and she becomes romantically involved with Nick during the story. While not a central character, Jordan represents the women of the time seeking personal freedom, though she also displays an opportunistic and detached side.
MYRTLE WILSON (ISLA FISHER)
Myrtle is Tom’s mistress and is married to George Wilson, a working-class mechanic. She dreams of escaping her humble life and entering the world of the wealthy through her affair with Tom, but her fate is tragic. Myrtle represents the longing for social mobility and the destructive consequences of materialism.
GEORGE WILSON (JASON CLARKE)
George is Myrtle’s husband, a hard-working but poor man who runs a car repair shop. Unlike Gatsby, who is driven by love, George is a desperate man trying to hold onto his wife, though his lack of power and status makes him vulnerable. He is a tragic figure who ultimately plays a key role in the story’s resolution.

The Importance of Sprinting for Fat Loss
Sprinting is a highly effective technique for burning fat, building muscle, and improving endurance. This form of exercise not only speeds up metabolism but also allows you to continue burning calories even after the session has ended.
BY SHENNAI LAROUX WWW.SHENNAILAROUX.COM @SHENNAILAROUX
As a fitness instructor, I’ve seen firsthand how sprinting can be a game-changer for fat loss. It’s one of my favorite methods because it’s incredibly effective at burning fat while building lean muscle. Sprinting is intense and challenging, but that’s what makes it so powerful.
Unlike steady cardio, sprinting activates both aerobic and anaerobic systems, torching calories during the workout and continuing to burn fat afterward thanks to the “afterburn effect” (EPOC). This means your body is still burning calories long after you’ve finished your sprints.
One of the best things about sprinting is that it engages fast-twitch muscle fibers, which help build lean muscle. More muscle means a faster metabolism, which allows you to burn more calories even when you’re not working out. I often incorporate sprint intervals into training sessions because they’re time-efficient and perfect for people with busy schedules.
If you’re serious about fat loss, I highly recommend adding sprints to your routine. Not only will it help you shed fat quickly, but it will also improve your endurance, cardiovascular health, and overall fitness. Don’t be afraid to push yourself—it’s tough but worth it!
Here’s an easy-to-follow sprint workout you can try:
Warm-up (5-10 minutes): Start with a light jog or brisk walk to get your muscles warm and your heart rate up.
Sprint Intervals: Sprint at 80-90% of your maximum effort for 20-30 seconds.
Recover by walking or jogging at a slow pace for 1-2 minutes. Repeat for 8-10 rounds.
Cool Down (5-10 minutes): Finish with a light jog or walk to bring your heart rate down, followed by some stretching to improve flexibility and prevent injury.
You can do this workout 2-3 times per week. As you get fitter, try increasing your sprint duration or decreasing the recovery time for an added challenge!
50 Cent: From Rapper to Mogul
With no signs of slowing down, 50 Cent’s story is far from over. What began as a dream in the streets of Queens has grown into a global empire, and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has proven he’s here to stay—conquering music, movies, and business, one power move at a time.
Few figures in the entertainment industry have managed to transition from one arena to another as seamlessly as Curtis Jackson, better known by his stage name, 50 Cent. Rising from the gritty streets of South Jamaica, Queens, to the heights of music stardom, 50 Cent has gone on to dominate not only the music world but also film, television, and business. This is the story of how 50 Cent transformed himself from a rapper into a mogul, creating a multifaceted empire that spans beyond the confines of entertainment.
Born on July 6, 1975, Curtis Jackson’s early life was shaped by poverty and violence. Raised by his grandmother after the death of his mother, he became involved in drug dealing at a young age. His rough upbringing would later become the raw material for his music, where he chronicled the struggles of growing up in a world defined by survival. However, the same environment that fueled his rap persona nearly ended his life when, in 2000, 50 Cent was shot nine times outside his grandmother’s home.
Surviving that near-death experience would turn out to be a pivotal moment in his life, galvanizing him to pursue his music career with renewed determination. By 2002, 50 Cent had captured the attention of Eminem and Dr. Dre, who signed him to a joint deal with Shady Records and Aftermath Entertainment. It was the start of a meteoric rise that would forever change the hip-hop landscape.
In 2003, 50 Cent released his debut studio album, *Get Rich or Die Tryin’*, a project that shook the foundations of hip-hop. The album’s lead single, “In Da Club,” became an instant anthem, showcasing 50’s gritty style and knack for creating catchy, radio-friendly hits. The album sold over 12 million copies worldwide and solidified him as one of the biggest new artists in the industry.
“Get Rich or Die Tryin” was more than just a commercial success; it became a cultural phenomenon. Songs like “P.I.M.P.,” “21 Questions,” and “Many Men (Wish Death)” reflected his hard-edged yet reflective persona, connecting with audiences in a way few debut albums do. By the mid-2000s, 50 Cent was not just a rapper but a brand, aligning himself with other burgeoning hip-hop moguls like Jay-Z and Diddy.
Not content with just dominating the charts, 50 Cent expanded his reach by creating G-Unit, a rap collective that included fellow artists like Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and Young Buck. The group’s debut album, *Beg for Mercy* (2003), was another commercial success, proving that 50 could replicate his solo success with a team. G-Unit’s brand soon extended into clothing, with the launch of the G-Unit clothing line in collaboration with Ecko Unlimited, further solidifying 50 Cent’s growing influence.
Yet, one of his most legendary business moves came with his involvement in VitaminWater. In 2004, 50 Cent invested in Glacéau, the parent company of VitaminWater, and became a part-owner. When Coca-Cola purchased Glacéau for $4.1 billion in 2007, 50 Cent reportedly made $100 million from the deal, a figure that marked his official transition from musician to businessman. This deal showcased his acumen in the business world, where he showed he could navigate and thrive just as much as he did in music.
As his music career flourished, 50 Cent began setting his sights on Hollywood. In 2005, he starred in the semi-autobiographical film *Get Rich or Die Tryin’*, which chronicled his journey from drug dealer to rapper. The film, while not a critical darling, performed well at the box office and helped position 50 Cent as a rising actor in the industry.
But acting was just the beginning. In 2014, he produced and starred in *Power*, a television series that would catapult him into the stratosphere of TV moguls. *Power* quickly became one of Starz’s most popular shows, running for six seasons and spawning multiple spin-offs, including *Power Book II: Ghost* and *Power Book III: Raising Kanan*. As an executive producer, 50 Cent demonstrated his ability to create compelling television that could attract and retain massive audiences, proving he had a Midas touch not just in music but in film and TV as well.
Beyond “Power”, 50 Cent produced “For Life”, a legal drama based on the true story of Isaac Wright Jr., who was wrongfully convicted and later became a lawyer. The series further solidified 50 Cent’s reputation as a creative force behind the camera, expanding his reach and influence in Hollywood.
Even while excelling in music and Hollywood, 50 Cent continued to diversify
“IN DA CLUB” is one of 50 Cent’s most iconic songs, released in 2003 as the lead single from his debut album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. Produced by Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo, the track quickly propelled 50 Cent to global stardom and became an anthem in both hip-hop and pop culture.
The production of “In Da Club” is notable for its catchy, minimalist beat, driven by a heavy bass line and synths that complement 50 Cent’s voice. The lyrics, celebrating partying and personal success, include the famous hook, “Go shawty, it’s your birthday,” which has become a culturally recognized phrase.
The song received widespread praise for its energy, rhythm, and 50 Cent’s ability to blend aggression with a commercial appeal that drew in a massive audience. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped various international charts, solidifying 50 Cent as one of the most influential artists of the decade.
The music video for “In Da Club,” directed by Philip Atwell, shows 50 Cent as part of a top-secret lab experiment, reinforcing his image as an unstoppable figure in hip-hop. This visual style, along with the song’s narrative, enhanced his brand as a dominant and confident rapper.
his business portfolio. He entered the liquor industry with Effen Vodka, becoming a minority stake owner and spokesman for the brand. This business venture allowed him to tap into another lucrative market, following the path of other entertainment figures who successfully branched into alcohol (like Diddy with Ciroc and Jay-Z with Armand de Brignac).
At one point, 50 Cent also dabbled in sports promotion, creating SMS Promotions, a boxing promotion company. Though his boxing venture didn’t reach the heights of some of his other businesses, it underscored his relentless entrepreneurial drive and willingness to explore new industries.
Despite his many successes, 50 Cent’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. In 2015, he filed for bankruptcy, citing debts of over $32 million. The bankruptcy sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, as many believed 50 Cent to be one of the wealthiest figures in hip-hop. However, his bankruptcy filing was largely strategic, allowing him to restructure his finances without losing significant assets.
Rather than marking the end of his empire, the bankruptcy became another chapter in his remarkable comeback story. Within a few years, 50 Cent was back on top, continuing to produce hit TV shows, launching new business ventures, and even settling his financial issues. His resilience during this period is a testament to his business savvy and refusal to give up.
Today, 50 Cent’s legacy transcends music. He’s a modern-day Renaissance man, having left an indelible mark on the music industry, television, film, and business. Whether he’s producing hit TV shows, creating new products, or making power moves behind the scenes, 50 Cent has proven time and time again that he’s a mogul in every sense of the word.
From selling millions of albums to making millions in business, 50 Cent has shown that it’s possible to rise from the harshest beginnings to achieve global success. He is a blueprint for artists who aspire to transition from mere performers to true business leaders.
JESSICA MORALES
“CREATING CHANGES FILLS MY SOUL, AND THROUGH MAKEUP, WE CAN HELP BOOST WOMEN’S SELF-ESTEEM.”
In this exclusive interview, we talk to Jessica Morales Chávez, a renowned professional makeup artist and businesswoman in the beauty world. With an initial background in Tourism and a Master’s in Business and Event Organization, Jessica found her true passion in makeup after becoming a mother and facing personal challenges. Throughout her journey, she has transformed lives, both through her art and by training new generations of makeup artists in her academy. Her story of perseverance, international success, and strong values makes her an inspiration to many women worldwide.**
ABOUT YOU:
Tell us about yourself. What’s your background, your interests, and what motivates you in the world of makeup and beauty?
My name is Jessica Morales Chávez. I have
a degree in Tourism and a Master’s in Business and Event Organization. I am also a professional makeup artist, which is what I currently do and develop as a profession. The beauty world has been something I’ve loved since I was a little girl, but I discovered my passion for it after becoming a mother. I went through a divorce and was left in charge of two babies. I couldn’t go out and work for someone else, so I decided to start a business in makeup without knowing that this art would lead me to present on major platforms and visit many countries. My motivation for dedicating myself to this world is the ability to transform women through makeup. Creating changes fills my soul, and seeing that through this, we can help boost other women’s self-esteem.
CAREER OR JOURNEY:
How did you start your journey in the world of makeup? Could you tell us about the key moments that have shaped your career so far?
I studied makeup 10 years ago, but for
several years it was just a hobby. Then it became extra income, but it was really five years ago that I decided it would become my main source of income. When I moved to Spain, I started with a 25-euro investment and in a room of my house, and everything I earned, I reinvested. In six months, I managed to move into the space where my beauty academy is currently located, where we train new professionals in this industry. Additionally, it has led me to become the makeup artist for beauty queens in Spain, working on platforms like Miss Universe Catalunya, Miss World Catalunya, Miss International Catalunya, Miss Universe Spain, Miss and Mister RNB Spain. I’ve also worked on international pageants like Miss Universe Switzerland, Miss Teen Mundial in El Salvador, Miss Eco International in Egypt, and one of the biggest platforms, Miss Universe 2023. I’ve also done makeup for platforms like Paris Fashion Week and Milan Fashion Week. I believe hard work and humility have been the key points to achieving things I never imagined.
What inspired you to pursue makeup, and why did you choose this career?
As I said earlier, it was something I liked since I was a child. It started out of necessity because I couldn’t find work, so I decided to start a business in it. I never imagined that I would find my passion here—not only in makeup, but also in helping transform the lives of other women through teaching this beautiful art. That’s something that still motivates me today.
Are there specific people, mentors, or role models who have had a significant influence on your journey?
Of course. Humans need mentors. The first ones were my parents. They’ve been my best mentors and examples of perseverance, helping me get to where I am today. Then, at university, I had a professor who is now a great friend. She taught me to be excellent in the professional field. She guided me and showed me what it means to be an ethical professional. I’ve also had spiritual leaders who helped me during difficult times. We, as humans, are a combination of body, intellect, and soul, and all three need to be aligned to be great people and great professionals.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND IMPACT:
Could you share some of your most significant achievements or experiences in the world of makeup?
Maybe for many, the greatest achievement has been stepping onto major international platforms, and yes, I can’t deny that it’s an important achievement. But what has truly impacted my life is how, through my life example, I’ve been able to influence and change other women’s lives. Every story of a student who has come into my life, and knowing I helped them transform their own stories, is the greatest impact I could have. That’s something that fills me and continues to motivate me to be a better woman and a better professional, because I know there are still lives to impact and transform.
Looking back, what do you consider your most important contribution so far, and why?
Creating my own company, Jessica Morales Beauty Academy, and passing on the message to women, especially migrant women, that Spain isn’t just a place to clean or care for the elderly. Spain is a country with much more to offer, where you can live off what you’re passionate about and become your own boss. You can become a businesswoman. I believe this is my greatest contribution to my community.
FUTURE PLANS AND ASPIRATIONS:
What exciting projects, goals, or plans do you have for the future in your career as a makeup artist?
I plan to open doors in other countries and direct makeup for international beauty pageants, giving my students the opportunity to live those experiences as well. I also plan to establish branches of my academy in other Spanish cities and eventually in other countries.
How do you see the evolution of the makeup world in the coming years, and how do you plan to adapt or contribute to those changes?
The evolution of the makeup industry has been incredible, and it continues to grow at a rapid pace. As professionals in this sector, we must be ready and prepared to adapt to those changes. I believe the key is constant training and learning. That will ensure we are not overwhelmed but ready to succeed alongside those changes.
PERSONAL DETAILS:
If applicable, could you share some personal details or characteristics that define you or your work?
I’m a single mother of two teenagers. I believe this has been one of the fundamental pillars that helped me get to where I am today. Leaving a legacy of perseverance and hard work for our children is the best inheritance we can give them. As a professional, I’ve learned to value myself, as this profession is still viewed by some as unimportant, and people want to pay us as if we don’t deserve it. However, as I always say, this is a luxury profession, and we must charge
accordingly. When I began valuing my work and my profession, everything started to change. I also believe healing my selfesteem was key to the success of my career. Unfortunately, women go through so much that our self-esteem becomes very low, and it prevents us from enjoying the great things life has to offer. I repeat, we are a whole, and to be successful, we must be aligned and healthy.
PROFESSIONAL DETAILS:
Could you tell us about your current professional situation and where you are? If relevant, would you be willing to move or travel for work?
I’ve now become an international makeup artist. I travel the world doing makeup for beauty queens, and the coolest part is that I get paid to work while discovering new countries. I think that’s a big achievement.
PRINCIPLES AND VALUES:
What fundamental principles or values guide you in your profession as a makeup artist?
My greatest value is love for God and love for others. Without that, we can’t do anything— especially without love for others. Another important value is love and loyalty to family, which should be our greatest value. I also believe that humility and passion for work and for my art define me.
How do you approach your work on a daily basis? Do you follow any specific philosophy or practice in your creative process?
My work is one of the things I love most. It’s my passion, and every day is a blessing to be able to dedicate myself to it. My philosophy is the one my father taught me: “Work out of love, because God provides food.” This means that we shouldn’t work just for money. If it were only for that, things would become burdensome, and sacrifices wouldn’t be valued. But when you work with love, even in difficult times, you keep doing it with the same or even more passion to improve things. And honestly, this philosophy has worked very well for me.

DESIGNER
Fearless in Alexander McQueen
Though his life was tragically cut short, his influence remains as powerful as ever. Whether through his bold collections, unforgettable runway shows, or lasting impact on fashion’s narrative, Alexander McQueen’s name will forever be synonymous with creativity, innovation, and the pursuit of beauty in its most daring form.
Few names resonate in the fashion world quite like Alexander McQueen. Known for his rebellious designs, emotional runway shows, and unparalleled craftsmanship, McQueen’s influence on fashion continues to inspire designers and captivate audiences. His career, filled with bold risks and unforgettable moments, redefined fashion’s boundaries, blending art, drama, and technical precision in ways rarely seen before. His work wasn’t just about clothing—it was about telling a story, often dark, sometimes shocking, but always beautiful. This article explores the life, work, and lasting legacy of Alexander McQueen, the man behind some of the most iconic designs in modern fashion history.
Born Lee Alexander McQueen on March 17, 1969, in Lewisham, London, McQueen was raised in a working-class family. His father was a taxi driver, and his mother, a social science teacher. From a young age, McQueen displayed a deep fascination with clothing and design, crafting dresses for his three sisters. This early passion laid the foundation for his future in fashion.
At 16, McQueen left school and started an apprenticeship at Savile Row tailors Anderson & Sheppard, later working for Gieves & Hawkes. These experiences at the prestigious tailoring
houses would become critical to McQueen’s design approach. He became known for his sharp tailoring skills, a hallmark that would distinguish his collections throughout his career.
McQueen’s formal introduction to the fashion world came when he enrolled at the renowned Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. His MA graduation collection in 1992, famously titled “Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims”, showcased his distinct vision: dramatic, dark, and boundary-pushing. The collection was spotted by influential fashion stylist Isabella Blow, who purchased the entire collection and became McQueen’s mentor and muse. It was Blow who suggested that McQueen use his middle name, Alexander, for his label—a move that helped solidify his brand’s identity.
In 1993, McQueen launched his own fashion label, quickly becoming a sensation in the London fashion scene. His early collections, known for their audacious themes and provocative styles, shocked the industry and drew both praise and criticism. McQueen’s 1995 collection, “Highland Rape”, remains one of his most controversial. The show, which featured models in torn clothing and bruised-looking makeup, was misinterpreted by some as misogynistic. However, McQueen later explained that the collection was a commentary on the exploitation of Scotland by England, a theme close to his heart due to his Scottish ancestry.
DESIGNER
McQueen’s work frequently explored themes of violence, romanticism, and the grotesque, blending historical references with a modern twist. His ability to create garments that were both avantgarde and technically brilliant made him one of the most innovative designers of his time.
In 1996, McQueen was appointed as the head designer of the prestigious French fashion house Givenchy, where he succeeded John Galliano. His early tenure at Givenchy was challenging, as McQueen felt stifled by the brand’s conservative codes. Nonetheless, he brought his signature edge to the brand, producing collections that continued to push the boundaries of high fashion.
In 2000, Gucci acquired a 51% stake in Alexander McQueen’s own label, giving the designer the financial backing to expand his brand globally. This partnership allowed McQueen to bring his bold vision to a wider audience, leading to the opening of flagship stores in London, New York, and Milan.
Alexander McQueen became famous not only for his clothes but for the theatricality of his runway shows. His presentations were more than fashion displays—they were immersive experiences that blended art, film, and performance. One of his most famous shows, “Voss” (Spring/Summer 2001), took place in a mirrored box that revealed a padded asylum-like room, with models dressed in elaborate, otherworldly designs. The show culminated in a powerful finale when a glass box shattered, revealing a nude model wearing a mask covered in moths.
In 1999, McQueen’s “No. 13” show made history when a robotic arm spray-painted a white dress live on stage, with model Shalom Harlow twirling in the center of the runway. These kinds of moments cemented McQueen’s reputation as a visionary who blurred the lines between fashion and performance art.
McQueen’s collections often drew inspiration from his love of history, nature, and fantasy. His Autumn/Winter 2006 collection, “The Widows of Culloden”, revisited his Scottish heritage with hauntingly beautiful designs inspired by the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. The show famously featured a hologram of supermodel Kate Moss, an ethereal, ghost-like figure floating in a cloud of white fabric.
In 2010, his final fully completed collection, “Plato’s Atlantis”, explored the theme of environmental collapse and the idea of humans evolving into amphibious creatures in response to rising sea levels. The show was a futuristic spectacle that showcased McQueen’s mastery of digital printing, with garments resembling the textures of reptiles and oceanic life. This collection is widely regarded as one of his finest and most innovative.
Behind the scenes, McQueen battled personal demons, including the loss of his close friend Isabella Blow in 2007 and his mother’s death in 2010. Just days after his mother passed away, on February 11, 2010, McQueen took his own life at the age of 40. His death shocked the fashion world, and many mourned the loss of a designer whose creativity seemed boundless.
Despite his tragic end, McQueen’s legacy endures. His designs continue to be celebrated for their artistry, technical brilliance, and emotional depth. Sarah Burton, McQueen’s longtime collaborator, took over as creative director of the Alexander McQueen brand following his death, continuing to honor his legacy while bringing her own perspective to the label.
Today, Alexander McQueen is remembered as a fashion icon who redefined what it means to be a designer. His ability to marry high fashion with raw emotion created a body of work that resonates deeply with both critics and fans alike. His collections remain timeless, and his runway shows are studied by fashion students and designers for their innovation and storytelling.
In 2011, the “Savage Beauty” exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York honored McQueen’s life and work. The exhibition was a massive success, becoming one of the most visited exhibits in the museum’s history. A similar exhibition was later held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, cementing McQueen’s status as one of the most influential designers of the 21st century.
Alexander McQueen was not just a designer—he was a storyteller, an artist, and a visionary. His fearless approach to fashion, combined with his technical prowess, revolutionized the industry and left an indelible mark on the world of design.
Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 collection, Plato’s Atlantis, is a landmark in fashion history, showcasing the designer’s extraordinary vision and craftsmanship. Inspired by the philosophical and mythological ideas of Atlantis, the collection explores themes of evolution, the environment, and the fusion of humanity with nature. The presentation was a breathtaking spectacle that not only showcased stunning garments but also served as a commentary on the pressing issues of environmental degradation and the future of our planet.

Translating directly to “pure life,” *Pura Vida* is more than just a greeting or farewell; it reflects a deep-rooted philosophy of appreciating life’s simple joys, living in harmony with nature, and embracing a stress-free existence. The allure of Costa Rica is inextricably tied to this concept, and anyone who visits soon understands the magic it brings.
Costa Ricans, known as Ticos and Ticas, live by the principle of

Whether you’re strolling through the bustling streets of San José or exploring the quiet coastal towns of the Nicoya Peninsula, you’ll encounter smiling locals offering a warm “Pura Vida!” It’s a philosophy that encourages you to slow down, let go of stress, and appreciate the beauty in everyday moments. This mindset permeates every aspect of Costa Rican culture, influencing the country’s sense of community, happiness, and well-being.

parks, wildlife reserves, and protected areas. This commitment to conservation is a reflection of the Pura Vida way—living in balance with the world around you, ensuring that nature thrives for future generations.
Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes are a crucial part of the *Pura Vida* experience. The country’s geographical diversity ranges from pristine beaches to lush rainforests and misty cloud forests, each ecosystem home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Costa Rica’s biodiversity is extraordinary—more than 5% of the world’s species can be found here, despite the country occupying just 0.03% of the planet’s surface.
Visitors can explore iconic sites like the Arenal Volcano, towering over the surrounding jungle, or take a dip in the thermal hot springs that bubble up from beneath the earth. For the adventurous, Costa Rica offers world-class zip-lining, white-water rafting, and hiking through the jungles of Manuel Antonio or Corcovado National Park, where you might spot monkeys, sloths, toucans, and jaguars.
On the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, you’ll find miles of stunning beaches perfect for surfing, snorkeling, and simply basking in the sun. Places like Tamarindo and Santa Teresa offer world-renowned surf breaks, while the calmer waters of the Gulf of Papagayo or Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side are ideal for relaxation.

The country’s Blue Zone status—one of the few regions in the world where people regularly live past 100—also highlights the impact of the *Pura Vida* lifestyle. The Nicoya Peninsula is one such
Blue Zone, where residents live long, healthy lives thanks to a diet rich in fresh, locally grown produce, an active lifestyle, and a strong sense of community and purpose.

The food is fresh, simple, and wholesome, often sourced directly from local farms and fishing villages. *Casado*, a traditional dish, is a staple of the Costa Rican diet, consisting of rice, beans, plantains, salad, and your choice of protein—whether chicken, fish, or beef.
Another classic is *gallo pinto*, a hearty breakfast dish made from rice and beans mixed together, often served with eggs, fresh cheese, and tortillas. For seafood lovers, the Pacific and Caribbean coasts offer fresh catches of the day like mahi-mahi, red snapper, and tuna, often prepared with tropical salsas and served with yucca or patacones (fried plantains).
The country’s coffee culture is another point of pride, with Costa Rican coffee widely regarded as some of the best in the world. A

visit to one of the many coffee plantations in the Central Valley or Monteverde is a must, where you can see the production process firsthand and sample some of the finest brews.
Costa Rica’s approach to tourism is closely aligned with its *Pura Vida* ethos, with the country leading the way in sustainable travel initiatives. The government and private sector have worked together to create a model that preserves the natural environment while benefiting local communities. Ecotourism is a cornerstone of the Costa Rican experience, and visitors are encouraged to explore the country’s natural beauty in a way that is respectful and sustainable.
Many lodges and hotels are certified by the Costa Rican Tourism Board’s Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST), ensuring that they meet rigorous environmental and social standards. These accommodations often use renewable energy, support local artisans, and engage in conservation efforts, making your stay both comfortable and eco-friendly.
What truly sets Costa Rica apart, though, is its people. Ticos are
known for their warmth, hospitality, and laid-back attitude, always willing to share their country’s treasures with visitors. Despite the challenges they may face, Costa Ricans are consistently ranked among the happiest people in the world, a testament to their positive outlook on life.
Community and family are central to the *Pura Vida* lifestyle. Whether it’s gathering for a communal meal, celebrating a local festival, or lending a hand to a neighbor, the sense of connection is strong. Visitors often feel like they’ve been welcomed into this tightknit fabric, even if just for a short time.
To truly experience Costa Rica is to embrace the *Pura Vida* way of life. It’s about more than just visiting beautiful places—it’s about slowing down, being present, and recognizing the richness of life in its simplest forms. Whether you’re exploring the vibrant ecosystems, enjoying fresh local food, or simply watching the sun set over the Pacific Ocean, Costa Rica invites you to live in the moment and appreciate the magic all around.
SABINA BARBARO
Sabina Barbaro
In the exciting and often glamorous world of modeling, some of the most inspiring stories come from the humblest beginnings. At just 13 years old, Sabina began working, leaving behind a childhood that forced her to grow up too fast. But instead of being weighed down by hardships, she packed her determination and became the star she always dreamed of being. From her crowning as the Swiss fitness beauty champion to her shining presence in the Miss Universe Switzerland scene, her journey has been a true parade of success and style.
But it’s not just about shining on the runway; this woman is a ball of energy and commitment. With a mission close to her heart, she plans to create a foundation to help abused women and children. In this fun conversation, she talks about her adventures, her inspirations, and how life has taught her to live each day like it’s a fashion show. Get ready to dive into a story of resilience, passion, and a touch of glamour that you won’t want to miss.
How did you start working, and what motivated you to do so at such a young age?
I started working at 13 because my mother was alone with three children, and my father had abandoned us without a trace for many years. It was hard to make ends meet. I wasn’t raised with a “silver spoon”; I’ve always had to fight to get what I want. I didn’t have a childhood since I had to grow up too fast—it was really difficult.
Being visionary, I have a new project coming to light: “Victoria Prestige”, specializing in luxury goods. I trained as a hairdresser and worked in a restaurant—I had two jobs to make a living. Then, I had the opportunity to go to Los Angeles to work as a model, where I spent a few months. Afterward, I missed my family, so I returned to Switzerland.
I was the Swiss fitness beauty champion in 2014 and the world fitness beauty champion in Greece, where I was selected among 25 younger candidates. I then got my diploma in hospitality, where I brilliantly passed my exams, and a life coaching diploma specializing in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), focused on solutions to change our mental programs and transform negativity into positivity. I also took a USPI course to work in real estate.
Constantly evolving intellectually, I started my pilot training several years ago, in addition to practical flying. Currently, I’m studying finance and financial markets. I’m developing as an entrepreneur in my real estate company, which I’m proud of, called “SB Immopro Sàrl”.
How did you discover the Miss Universe Switzerland casting, and what was your experience like?
One day, I came across an ad on Instagram. I wrote a message because I couldn’t apply online. I was surprised because I thought the casting was over. One day, Lina, the president, called me and invited me to the casting. So I went to Bern with a bit of apprehension, dressed very elegantly for the casting, and to my great surprise, I was selected. I thought the younger girls would be the ones chosen. I really didn’t expect to be picked.
“LIFE IS VERY PRECIOUS, WE MUST LIVE EACH DAY AS IF IT WERE OUR LAST”
What drove you to choose this path, and what do you enjoy most about it?
First and foremost, it was a personal challenge since I’m a passionate and ambitious woman. What I enjoyed most was that it allowed me to step out of my comfort zone, break through mental limits and barriers, evolve as a woman, and feel mentally stronger. It’s a true investment and personal enrichment that marks your life forever.
Who is the person that inspires you the most in the world?
Oprah Winfrey, because she started from nothing, had a difficult childhood, is a strong woman, has come a long way, and is a life example. Her shows are very inspiring and motivating.
What has been the most meaningful experience in the Miss Universe Switzerland adventure?
It was the experience of being able to walk in New York Fashion Week, thanks to Lina
and her connections that opened doors to that magical world. For me, it was an idyllic and unforgettable moment—an incredible experience. We were privileged to participate in a global event.
Another great experience was the preparation week in Anzère: getting up early, going to bed late, and creating our choreography until late at night for the final in just one week. It requires a lot of discipline, resilience, perseverance, and overcoming yourself. It’s a great satisfaction to reach the gala and forget all the sacrifices.
What are your exciting plans for the future, both in your Miss career and in your personal life?
I’m in the administrative process to create my foundation, which could house 5 to 7 abused women and their children. It’s a project close to my heart since I was a teenager.
As for the future of my Miss career, why not evolve in the fashion world or participate in another beauty pageant? In fact, I’ve already been approached about that.
How do you stay in shape physically?
I eat healthily, preferably organic, exercise, run in the mountains, do yoga, skating, cycling, and aerobics. Having good discipline, a healthy lifestyle, and a positive, visionary mindset. I don’t smoke, and I only drink alcohol occasionally.
How do you manage to balance your responsibilities with the time that flies by so quickly?
We only have one life, and time passes too fast, so we must enjoy it and do what we love. I realized how precious life is when my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer with metastases all over her body. We shouldn’t waste time on superficial things and live every day like it’s our last because nothing in life is guaranteed or eternal.
What values were instilled in you, and how do you apply them in your daily life? Being a passionate and authentic woman, I like to see things through and give my projects 100% effort. I was raised with a strict upbringing and instilled with real values like respect, hard work, discipline, and loyalty—values that, unfortunately, are being lost today.

The Time Has Come to Change!
Change is essential for personal growth and fulfillment. By embracing transformation, breaking free from limiting environments, and overcoming fears, we can create a better version of ourselves and achieve lasting happiness.
BY CRISTINA CASTILLO @CRISTINAC4 CRISTINACASTILLO
E“CHANGE STARTS WITH A DECISION, AND THAT DECISION IS YOURS TO MAKE.”
verything in life is in constant motion, but there are pivotal moments when we must consciously make a radical change. That moment when we realize we don’t need to start from scratch because we’ve learned a lot along the way, but we do need to start fresh. We’re no longer comfortable with what we live and feel, that moment when the environment feels suffocating, when you feel overwhelmed, exhausted, anxious, distressed, worried about some personal reason that keeps you stuck, holds you back, paralyzes you. It could be a partner, a country situation, a city, unemployment, “friends,” home, economy, family, work, addictions, even your own body begging for you to change your mindset so that you can transform it, gift it health, improve it, and in doing so, turn your reality around. We’ve always heard the famous phrase “For things to change, you have to change” (Jim Rohn) or the other that says, “Nothing changes if you don’t change.” Yes, they may sound overused or cliché, but they’re true. Change starts with a decision, and that decision is yours to make. People may tell us many things, but if we’re not open to listen, understand, and then act, nothing happens. We’ll stay stuck in the same place for days, weeks, months, years, or even our whole lives. We know where we need and must change; you know it better than anyone else. I’m not here to list them for you—that’s your task, to be done with
sincerity and without wasting time. But I am here to help you take those steps toward the next level of the change you want and need.
Change brings with it a series of nuances, processes, and steps, but the most important is awareness, and the second is acting accordingly. I’m not saying it’s easy, because if it were, everyone would do it. But the reality is that most people prefer to stay “comfortable” but not happy. That’s why I invite you to change, to move, to break free from old and bad habits, and to embrace a better future.
THE MOMENT OF CHANGE
It’s that exact moment when you realize and become aware of everything you want to transform. The minute you say, “I want to change my life,” the moment of decision. That magical instant when you say, “That’s enough,” to end the situation, whatever it may be. That hour, that day, that moment is crucial. It’s an individual decision, with us as the main agents of change, taking responsibility for the next steps.
DO IT FOR YOURSELF
It’s essential that this decision is made for yourself and not influenced by someone else’s opinion or impulse. For that, you need to know yourself. Why do you want to change? What for? Where will that decision take you? Ensure it leads to a better place than where you are today. If you want it to be effective, you must connect with yourself, know your desires, qualities, and the path you’ll follow. This requires self-awareness and selfreflection.
CHANGE, EVEN IF IT HURTS
Sometimes change means paying a high emotional price, as it often brings a quota of pain in making certain decisions. You’ll likely have to let go of people or things you love, but that, unfortunately, are not aligned with your true life purpose at that moment. Even though we love them, they may not be good for us now. We must simply thank them for being part of our lives, send them blessings, and move on. Staying in the same place limits us and doesn’t allow us to unleash our full potential, that strength, that courage that lets us shine, sparkle, and show our best version. We don’t choose our parents or the country we’re born in, but we can choose to change our current situation and environment. Let go, remember that everything passes, even the bad, but you have to make it happen. Put it in your mind: NOW!
OPEN YOURSELF TO CHANGE
You can’t do this alone; you need to be open to the possibility of living and experiencing new opportunities. Replace those negative or paralyzing thoughts with ones that allow you to visualize the new life you’ll have or how you’ll look. Willpower is essential. You must be willing to undergo the transformation process with much commitment, effort, and deep determination. Opening your mind to change lets you see things with new perspectives, ideas, and experiences that you didn’t have before. It frees you from the past, from old and bad habits that keep you from reaching your personal development and growth. Start with small changes until you reach the big ones you long for. Only by taking the first step will you reach the goal.
GET OUT OF YOUR BLOCK
03 04 05 08 06
get out of your block, go live. This world is waiting to be explored by you, and it’s eager to see the best version of you. Think, if you change your attitude, you’ll change your destiny.
DON’T BE AFRAID, BE EXCITED
Leaving your block, that place where you feel comfortable and safe, can cause a lot of uncertainty, even anxiety. Not knowing what lies ahead can be scary, but only if you don’t trust yourself or focus on the negative. You can analyze the risks, but it’s better to focus on creating a concrete plan, with certain steps that lead you to where you want to be. Get excited about your new life, visualize it, and have hope that what you pursue, you’ll achieve. Motivation is the key to achieving change. It’s one of your best qualities, so make the most of it.
FIND YOUR PEACE
“EVERYTHING IN LIFE IS IN CONSTANT MOTION, BUT THERE ARE PIVOTAL MOMENTS WHEN WE MUST CONSCIOUSLY MAKE A RADICAL CHANGE.”
Elia K. Schneider, my teacher, friend, director, and acting mentor here in Los Angeles at the Stella Adler Academy of Acting, one of the most prestigious schools in Hollywood, California, would often say to her students, including me, “Get out of your block.” It was a call to expand things, an emergency call to not stay in the small, in the little we had known. Bringing a character (in acting) of greatness, historical, with high ideals, wise, and broad-minded, into a limited environment like our block, or four corners, was forbidden. We have to elevate it, give it the dimension it has. We must go to the life of that character and give it greatness, put ourselves in their shoes.
What do I mean by this? We have the opportunity to grow, to be better, to get out of our comfort zone, to leave behind mediocrity, to expand our knowledge, mind, and learning, to always seek improvement, elevation, education, learning. Let go of what holds us back, change the environment, and expose ourselves to new experiences. Learn about art, music, literature, painting, sports, whatever you like. Change your career for one you’re passionate about, find friendships or partners that build you up and help you grow, believe, grow, and do. You can change everything, but you must be willing. Arm yourself with courage,
It’s important to prioritize what we feel. Many times, we tend to put others above ourselves. I’m not saying we should neglect our loved ones or environment—no! Part of our peace is living in harmony with others and everything around us. Giving love generates peace, happiness, and fulfillment, as long as it’s not forced. Otherwise, it doesn’t come from love, but from obligation. Doing things you don’t want to do, or that are unpleasant to you, is better left undone. Don’t let others destroy your inner peace. To do this, you must know your essence and begin to set boundaries. Don’t let people take advantage of you; don’t confuse kindness with being “foolish.” Wake up! Start the change for yourself, and you’ll feel better and be able to give your best to others. Remember that true happiness lies in inner peace, calmness, and tranquility, and that’s non-negotiable.
DON’T LISTEN TO OTHERS
Some people tend to project their fears onto you, their mental limitations. Remember, that doesn’t belong to you. They’re speaking from their reality, their fears, frustrations, and inability. It doesn’t have to be yours. Many people give opinions, but few act. Be one of the doers. Go and make it happen. Challenge even your own limiting beliefs, if you have them—those that interfere with your individual, personal growth. Become your own best friend, ally, and motivator. Let your transformation and the goals you set for yourself become your most precious reward. Get excited, be joyful, and celebrate. The best of your life is yet to come. Conquer your fulfillment by changing without delay—the time is now!
I say goodbye, with love and affection, your friend: Cristina Castillo.

Inspire and Transcend Time
Procrastination: Why We Delay and How to Beat It
BY LAURI SIMPSON @LAURISIMPSON
We’ve all been there, sitting in front of a task that absolutely must get done, yet somehow finding ourselves scrolling social media, reorganizing the pantry, or watching just one more episode.
Procrastination isn’t laziness; it’s an art form, one that we’ve all mastered at some point. But why do we procrastinate, and more importantly, how can we stop?
If procrastination has ever left you stressed, overwhelmed, or working against the clock, you’re not alone. The good news? Breaking free is possible, and it doesn’t require a complete personality overhaul, just a few smart strategies to outwit your inner procrastinator.
THE PSYCHOLOGY BEHIND PROCRASTINATION
At its core, procrastination is about avoiding discomfort. Our brains are wired to dodge tasks that feel boring, overwhelming, or uncertain. Instead, we reach for things that offer quick bursts of pleasure, whether it’s checking notifications, watching a funny video, or scrolling endlessly. The result? Short-term relief, long-term stress. Interestingly, it’s not a time management problem; it’s an emotional regulation problem. We’re not putting things off because we don’t have time, we’re putting them off because they feel hard, unpleasant, or stressful.
PROCRASTINATION PITFALLS: WHAT IT COSTS US
Procrastination often comes with a hidden price. Sure, watching TikToks instead of finishing a report feels great in the moment, but the stress of last-minute deadlines or missed opportunities can take a toll on our mental well-being. Chronic procrastination can leave us
feeling unmotivated, guilty, and trapped in a loop of self-criticism. The silver lining? It’s a habit, and habits can be changed.
THE POWER OF SMALL WINS
Here’s the thing: Procrastination feeds on inaction. But each small step you take creates momentum, and before you know it, the task you dreaded becomes manageable. Progress, no matter how small, breeds confidence. And the more you build confidence, the easier it becomes to tackle the next task.
FINAL THOUGHTS: PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION
Procrastination isn’t the enemy, our fear of discomfort is. But the good news is that every time you push through resistance, you prove to yourself that you’re capable. You don’t need to be perfect; you just need to start.
5PracticalWaystoBeatProcrastination
The Two-Minute Rule
If a task will take less than two minutes, do it immediately. It’s amazing how quickly small actions can snowball into momentum. Plus, the sense of accomplishment from completing even tiny tasks gives you the energy to tackle bigger ones.
Break It Down into Micro-Tasks
Big projects are overwhelming, and your brain doesn’t like overwhelm. Instead of telling yourself, I need to write that report, break it down:
•Draft the title.
•Write the first paragraph.
•Take a 5-minute break.
Smaller steps feel manageable and keep you moving forward.
Use the Pomodoro Technique
This method involves working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break. The time limit makes it easier to start tasks (because hey, it’s just 25 minutes!), and the frequent breaks keep you from burning out.
Bonus: You’ll stay more focused.
Make It Fun (or at Least Rewarding)
Trick your brain by pairing an unpleasant task with something enjoyable. Hate doing laundry? Blast your favorite playlist while folding clothes. Need to write emails? Treat yourself to a coffee or fresh juice when it’s done. Rewards make tasks more enjoyable and less easy to avoid.

Forgive Yourself and Move On
Everyone procrastinates. The key is to avoid getting stuck in guilt.
Studies show that self-forgiveness reduces future procrastination. If you slip up, be kind to yourself, refocus, and try again. Progress isn’t linear, and that’s okay.
So, next time you feel the urge to procrastinate, take a breath, break it down, and remind yourself: It’s not about doing everything, it’s about doing something. Small steps lead to big changes, and the best time to start is always now.
