Signature Profile Thanks to Those Who Give By Cynthia M. Brown The holiday season is upon us again. This is a season to reflect on all that we have, to give thanks for our good fortune and to reach out and give to those less fortunate. In this space, Infinity has made it a policy to shine a light on individuals, businesses and organizations in the tri-state that make a difference in the lives of others every day. This year, we want to salute all of you, the over 7,000 nonprofit and service agencies in greater Cincinnati, who work tirelessly on behalf of those in need. Without your efforts, the communities you serve would grind to a halt. My friend and a tireless champion of those who work in non-profit services, Gail Smith, founder of the Smith Family Foundation, has said, “I have never found a non-profit organization that didn’t deserve financial support. They ALL do amazing, and much needed work.” This year, as you look forward to the rest of the holiday season, please reflect on the non-profits that serve your community. Whether they are churches that offer food and clothes pantries, senior citizens centers, community recreation centers or disaster relief organizations, spend some time thinking about how they have helped you and your circle of friends and family. Challenge yourselves and your family and friends to give back, whether financially or through volunteer opportunities. Make a list: you might be surprised to find out how much you depend on the work and caring of these tireless people and organizations. In my life, a partial list looks something like this: Suzanne G. Komen—I am a breast cancer Survivor The Greater Cincinnati Cancer Support Communitycounseling during my treatment and recovery. Race for the Cure—my mother is an ovarian cancer warrior The Council on Aging—care for my now deceased grandfather and my maternal grandmother. The Alzheimer Foundation—care for my now deceased grandfather The National Alliance for Mental Illness- support for family member suffering from clinical depression and PTSD. The Red Cross—assistance to my brother when a fire destroyed his home Free Store Food Bank—food assistance after the fire Goodwill Industries—job opportunity for family friend with disabilities Caricole- housing and services for a friend with AIDS. If I could, I would donate to each of these organizations every month. I do try to contribute and I do volunteer when and where I can. To each of these and the other countless organizations that touch my life and the lives of those I hold dear, you have my heartfelt gratitude, not just this season, but each and every day.

You Can Own The “Zone”! With Hypnosis

by William Molitor, BCH, CI You know that great feeling that you get when your mind and body are in sync and everything that you do just feels right. Have you ever wondered why it seems that when you are in the zone everything that you do just feels right? That is because the Zone is a mental state of being completely involved in the present moment. Learning to tap into that mental state is everyone’s dream. To understand how to achieve that mental state it is necessary to know just a bit more about your mind and how it works. Your mind has two major information processors the “conscious “and the “sub-conscious” with distinctly different functions. Let’s take a quick look at the differences between them. The conscious mind has the primary job of judging, evaluating, and critiquing all the information that you are exposed to. The subconscious mind is your bio-computer that operates the automatic processes of the body, provides the storehouse for memories, and most importantly triggers your habits. All the information that is processed by your subconscious mind is non-critical much like that of a computer. It does not distinguish the difference between good or bad it simply processes your most dominate thoughts. More important is that it doesn’t know the difference between real events or intensely imagined ones, and will actually develop the neuro pathways during hypnotic visualization virtually the same way as if the action was being physically performed. This becomes important because with hypnosis you are able to work at the subconscious level. You can accurately create the neuro pathways that do not have any attachment to old habits, fears or limitations. With this new perfected information recorded in your sub-conscious through hypnosis you have a tremendous advantage. Hypnosis provides you with the means to change negative belief systems and

4

habitual physical behaviors much faster and easier than when dealing only with the conscious mind. When your sub-conscious mind believes an idea, it acts upon it without having to consciously think about the task. Consider this, do you have to think about your habitual movements or do they just naturally happen? Professional hypnosis provides a way to eliminate your negative habits quickly by going straight to the source and making it easier to implement new positive behaviors that then become part of your natural performance. You can improve your Yoga experience, meditation, sports performance or change unwanted habits such as over-eating and smoking with ease. The only drawback that professional hypnosis appears to have is that it is a method that is vastly misunderstood by normal everyday people. Many people have common misconceptions about hypnosis. This is mostly due to the Media’s portrayal of hypnosis as mystical or magical. Anyone that has researched hypnosis has found that there is an abundant supply of information that supports the positive results of using hypnosis. This information is in the form of practical application as well as scientific research that has been conducted at every level of the educational and research community such as Harvard and Stanford University. Evidence has shown that hypnosis has been used to enhance athletic performance for many decades. The use of hypnosis has been hidden behind many other names due to its public perception. You may be more familiar with processes such as guided imagery and visualization, or positive thinking, or mental rehearsal, these all apply the fundamentals of the hypnotic process. However, due to reasons ranging from unreasonable fear to intentional misrepresentation of the natural state of hypnosis, people in the past have shied away from using the name hypnosis. A large body of evidence has revealed that while you

are in the super-learning state that is hypnosis, you are able to accelerate the learning curve and increase your ability to carry out tasks related to your desired performance in any activity. This includes establishing new physical habits that enhance your performance. So now that you know that your mind plays an essential part in you attaining optimal performance in any activity you can learn how to take advantage of that control with professional hypnosis. Don’t just wait for the next time that you get into the Zone; learn to do it naturally and keep that great feeling day after day. Discover the advantages of professional hypnosis and learn to connect your mind and body to operate as one, so you can “Own the Zone”!

Snow’s Secret Vibrations by Jill Mattson

A deep layer of snow blankets a pristine winter woods landscape - what a favorite scene for us all this time of year. A beautiful and serene wonder of nature occurs when colorless water paints the world white with the magical frosting of the first snowfall. We have an innate attraction to such natural beauty - giving us peace, security and joy. Perfect snowflakes are energetic vibrations converted into substance - energy frozen into matter - crystallized pure water. Energy turns into matter and vice versa in the continuous dance of this universe surrounding us. We have a vibratory nature as divine beings. We are composed of energy and matter; our energetic components include chemical, biochemical and electrical energies, which are well understood. Our spiritual and psychic natures are driven by subtle energy, which remains more elusive. Subtle energy affects our being on all levels. Of course we know that there is more to reality, to the infinite Cosmos, than we can perceive directly. We accept

6

this because we have been warned since childhood that there is “more to it than you can see”; however we are too rooted to the physical, the material - to things that we can see with our own eyes... we rely too much on our sense of sight. In this spiritual season - get beyond the physical extend your consciousness and your view of the universe. Think to the simple snowflake. At first glance it is a fluffy white dot, but on closer observation, the snow flake is a beautiful geometric ornament. You may not have heard that freezing snow crystals can be affected by beautiful music - or strong emotions. This phenomena is reflected in the work of Masaru Emoto (The Hidden Messages in Water). Emoto found that the crystal structure formed when water droplets freeze could be significantly impacted by exposing the water to vibrational energy - in the form of music and emotions. Snowflakes, in their near infinite variety, reflect the endless feelings, thoughts and music that are part of us and our world.

Dec / Jan 2013

Emoto found that water can express itself in an unlimited number of ways. His experiments exposed crystallizing water to beautiful music - dramatically affecting the crystals that were formed. Classical music strongly enhances snowflakes - or water crystals: forming delicate crystals with Mozart, distinct geometries with Beethoven and elegant details with Chopin... it is as if snow “feels” invisible musical vibrations - and is sculpted by them. Even emotions and positive (or negative) thoughts can influence water crystals per the work of Emoto. Positive emotions and words corresponded to beautiful symmetrical crystals; negative thoughts produced malformed, disjointed snowflakes. It is as if your intentions take physical form as they influence the freezing water. Tap water tainted with chlorine and other waters, polluted with chemical contaminants OR with negativity and hate, produced deformed, fragmented crystals. These shapes are in stark contrast to the elegant, symmetrical shapes from pure waters and pure feelings. We cannot see the sound vibrations, or detect the emotional energies, but they are as real as the snowflakes that are shaped by their influences. Each snowflake is natures artwork, displaying a perfect crystalline shape bound with heavenly music. It is obvious why a pristine winter scene looks so pure and healthy; harmony and resonance from perfect snow crystals transform the landscape and bathe everything in joyful energy. Water is THE element of life! All living things from the highest (Man) to the lowliest microorganisms require water - are made from water. Our bodies consist of about 70% water... the first compound searched for on other planets for supporting life is water. Mars excites scientists because water has been discovered there. A logical extension of Emoto’s work is that a healthy body is reinforced by positive emotions, natural beauty and harmonious music. The beautiful, symmetrical ice crystals formed in the presence of these positive influences are clear indicators of strength, beauty and health. Better wellness is possible through vibrational energy. When young children are presented with scenes of natural beauty and perfect snow flake crystals versus congested urban scenes and deformed crystals they unanimously prefer the former scenes. Harmony is a state of bliss AND it also is the perfect interplay of vibrations - from a violin or in the deepest workings of subatomic particles. Current scientific

Infinity

thought suggests that the material world is held together by harmony or resonance - that mysterious force that determines how subatomic particles relate and bond with one another and controls how oscillations of galactic gravitational fields interact. These very same invisible forces rule in our subjective worlds, as music changes our moods and dispositions. Once we truly understand these fundamental energies we can apply them to every aspect of our lives - elevating our existence. Just as no two snowflakes are exactly alike, no two people’s energies are identical. Their beauty is in their variety and endless expressions. Sound vibration influences matter; a microcosm of the universe’s vast oneness of matter and energy is the freezing of water into an infinite number of snowflakes. Energy affects matter... amazingly subtle, targeted, precise energy packets can tune our bodies, grow our minds, harmonize our souls and make perfect beauty in nature. Enjoy the blessed holiday season and get past the material. Remember your Holistic nature - you have a divine element. Enjoy the blessings of a song and in a snowflake. The universe is one of matter and energy - inseparable, indivisible, ONE. Nurture and strengthen your spirit, Believe. About the Author. What is Color Energy? by Vicki Richter Last issue I wrote “Seeing Is Believing” in which I described how the Biopulsar Biofeedback System works and how I found my husband’s pre-Stage 1 Esophageal Cancer. For better clarity, I would like to share some information about how the mind/body connection works with this system. The body is composed of organs and glands, each with their own specific function. The science of body language tells us what may be preventing the energy flow in these areas. When the energy flow is blocked at a point, the information indicates an area of stress and in some cases pain or disease. When our thoughts and emotions are being processed correctly our body functions at its full vitality. So let’s see how all of this relates to biofeedback imaging. Sunlight is the main source and provider of light, heat, and energy. Sunlight consists of energies in the form of the electromagnetic waves and part of this electromagnetic energy includes several kinds of “rays” including visible light rays (color). Light rays consist of the seven color energies: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. We can see these colors in a rainbow, a drop of rain, and even a snowflake. Color and light are inseparable. Each color of the visible light rays has a different wave length and vibrational frequency, which affects us differently. These color impulses travel through the eye’s optic nerve to a part of the brain via the pituitary gland, triggering other glands and their hormone secretion to other parts of the body.

Every thought is a wavelength of energy vibrating through our body. Whenever someone has an emotional, mental or physical problem, there is an imbalance in the body’s energy. There are several factors of mind and body that may program disharmony in the energetic flow: hereditary, physical exposure, emotions, nutrition and environment, to name a few. Our body organs, in most cases, not only have their physical function but also function on a mental and emotional level. This consciousness is stored in every cell of the body. The above excerpts were taken from Colour Energy Corporation’s Training Manual. To quote excerpts from Dr. Mehmet Oz:’s website: “... There’s a different level of energy that we should all think about: energy fields. It’s a part of medicine that we don’t fully understand, this relationship between the energy inside the cell and the energy outside the cell. It’s the energy that allows one part of the body to have an effect on another, even though there seems to be no clear chemical connection—It’s these energy fields—your life force, your chi, your intangible aura—that we believe will be the next great frontier of medicine.” About the author: Vicki is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner (AADP), a Certified Biopulsar Biofeedback Analyst, and is a Reiki Master. She is also Certified in Herbal Health, Holistic Nutrition, and NonDirected Imagery. To contact her, call 513-218-1493 or email her at vrichter@cinci.rr.com. Be sure to check out her website – www.naturalhealing4you.net.

Many body functions are stimulated or retarded by light and the different colors of light. Since light and its colors physically affect glands and hormones, they will also have a marked influence on our moods and feelings. The aura is a reflection of our personal electromagnetic field. This part of our electromagnetic energy field is a projection of the vibratory rates emitted by our body including our brain eaves – our thoughts – making our aura a part of our personality. Our aura displays thoughts and emotions on a conscious and unconscious level, showing the energies of not only our physical condition but also our psychological condition.

Baker Chiropractic Testimonial

Mara Murphy’s Four Generations of Treatment

I first found Baker Chiropractic after injuring my back. I was standing on a patch of ice while lifting my 5 year old into her car seat. I started to slide and twisted in an odd direction to avoid dropping my daughter. I felt an odd sensation in my back when I fell then the pain started. I spent two days in bed using ice and heating pads. Nothing was helping. I had always been rather skeptical of chiropractic, believing it was gimmicky nonsense. At this point though with 3 young children and being in such pain I became desperate. I made my appointment and met with Dr. Baker still quite skeptical. When my adjustment was over I was amazed at the relief I felt. I was able to move again. I admit I was shocked how well it worked.

My mother suffered from a lot of neck, back and joint pain. After hearing and seeing how much I was helped by my adjustment she decided to give it a try as well. Very skeptical at first she has now become a regular at Baker Chiropractic. After being a client for a while Dr. Baker told me about how chiropractic can help ADD & ADHD. Unwilling to medicate my 5 year old for her ADD I decided to start bringing her in for adjustments as well. She loves Dr. Baker and her adjustments. She talks about how they make her feel better. My 88 year old grandmother lives overseas in the Netherlands. She suffers from major neck pain due to degeneration. Dr. Baker has started giving her adjustments when she visits us. After trying everything in The Netherlands from injections in the neck to deaden the nerves to major pain killers we have finally found something that helps her pain, adjustments at Baker Chiropractic. Now nearly a year later Dr. Baker is now treating 4 generations of women in my family. I am very happy I found Baker Chiropractic. Mara Murphy

The Season

by Cynthia M. Brown

My sister is fond of saying that life is filled with seasons: for each of us, we move through life and our evolution is marked by the passing of seasons. When we are young, we are filled with grandiose ideas and dreams. We age and the season of our youth when everything seems possible passes. She has always taught her children about life and its many changes by using this analogy. For her family a new season of change has begun. My sister, her husband and my parents are planning to move to Florida next June. Her grown children are dealing with the notion that their parents will not live in the town of their birth; that the holidays will be spent in a different house in a different place. My sister tells them this is the natural order of things, that the season of their childhood and youth is passing and that change is part of life. This holiday season is a poignant one in so many ways. My mother has survived her on-going battle with cancer for a second holiday. She is still in remission and yet, we all silently wonder, even as we give thanks for each day she remains healthy and with us, when the season of her health

12

will change. My father, always so strong and independent, continues to battle heart disease and now, the on-set of blindness. In my own life, my partner and I transition to a new place and way of life, leaving our 19-year-old son to live in our house and attend college in January. It is even with the constancy of holiday traditions, a time of change. I want to hold all the memories and breathe life into them again. I want to open my eyes and see my five year old son, his eyes alight with wonder on Christmas morning; I want to hear his squeals of delight as the Easter Bunny Mobile (my old stick shift Toyota) “hops” along the road as we make special basket deliveries at five in the morning dressed in full bunny regalia. I want to peak during supper prayers and see my brother’s eyes light up as he scans the dinner table and the room and thanks the Lord for the pumpkins at Halloween. I want to breathe deeply and smell my father’s amazing cornbread dressing and my mother’s apple pie. I want to hear my mother, sister and brother harmonize as we sing our favorite carols around the piano or in the church auditorium.

Dec / Jan 2013

Perhaps it is because I am 50 that I feel such a pull of nostalgia. I have marked this season for 50 years and as we all age and face life’s challenges, I am more keenly aware of the passage of time and of the preciousness of life and memory. I know that we all idealize our lives; the smells, sights and sounds of youth become more vivid in our mind’s eye, as time passes. I want to remember it all-the good and the not so good. I want to hold all that was real and true. I tried once, to capture it all in a poem. It is still the best and truest I have ever done. Home for the Holidays We went down hard every winter. The season bore down like the unrelenting tax collector And my folks worked hard and did without. I built a snowman when I was five, Covered with the pine straw beneath it Lightly dusting our ground. The blizzard took our town and buried it And I passed my eighth year by candlelight and the Warmth of a blazing fire. I cannot build snow people now. I have seen little snow. But the season still carries us down… Down a lane of photographs Where family dinner was more than a table Of food and grace. I cannot see all the faces, not even memory can recall The endless parade of people that threaded our lives When strangers ceased to be and we all believed in miracles No matter how we numbered our streets. I can romance the time, the place, the faces, But I cannot escape the feeling, The sense of belonging, Even when it seemed I would drown in it. It was home, it was our world, it was a life and living… It was home. Celebrate the season with those who make each moment a treasure.

The Power of Mantra Chanting by Nancy Caldwell Sound Is Power The sound of Mantra can lift a person towards their higher self. These sound elements of Sanskrit language are permanent entities and are of everlasting significance. In the recitation of Sanskrit Mantras the sound is very important, for it can bring transformation in us while leading us to power and strength. Different sounds have different effects on human psyche. If a soft sound of wind rustling through leaves soothes our nerves, the musical note of running stream enchants our hearts, thunders may cause awe and fear. The sacred utterances or chanting of Sanskrit Mantras provide us with the power to attain our goals and lift ourselves from the ordinary to a higher level of consciousness. It gives us the power to cure diseases; ward off negativity and gain wealth. Chanting helps us change our attitude and consciousness. Devotional chanting is one of the most powerful ways to open the heart and allow change to occur. Origin of Mantras Every Mantra in the Vedas, Upanishads and various religious traditions (sampradayas) within Hindu religion begin with Om or Aum - the primordial sound, the sound that is said to have its origins at the time of the creation of the cosmos - also referred to as the ‘Big Bang’. Om: The Beginning & the End The Bible (John 1:1) says: “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” Modern Vedic philosophers have interpreted this teaching of the Bible, and equated Om with God. Om is the most important of all mantras. All mantras generally begin and often also end with Om. Healing by Mantropathy The chanting of Om in Transcendental Meditation has now received widespread recognition. Mantras can be used to treat tension and many other difficult diseases that are yet to come. The Brahmvarchas Shodh Sansthan, research center for integration of science and spirituality in Shantikunj, Haridwar, India, is one of the most popular

14

known of which carries out extensive experiments on ‘mantra shakti’. The result of these experiments is used to testify that Mantropathy which can be used scientifically for healing and environment cleansing. How to Chant There are many schools of thought on the methods of chanting. A Mantra chanted correctly or incorrectly, knowingly or unknowingly, carefully or carelessly, is sure to bear the desired result for physical and mental well being. It is also believed by many that the glory of Mantra chanting cannot be established through reasoning and intellect. It can be experienced or realized only through devotion, faith and constant repetition of the Mantra. According to some scholars, Mantra chanting is Mantra Yoga. The simple yet powerful Mantra, Om or Aum harmonizes the physical forces with the emotional forces with the intellectual forces. When this happens, you begin to feel like a complete being - mentally and physically. But this process is very slow and requires a lot of patience and unfailing faith. Keep the Faith! It is important to have complete faith in the recitation of Mantras. It is primarily through faith - aided by strong will - that one achieves one’s goals. A sound body and calm mind are essential for the chanter of Mantras. Once we are free from all worries and have achieved stability in mind and body, we will derive maximum benefit through the recitation of Mantras. We must have a definite object in view and a strong will power to obtain the desired objective, and then direct that will to achieve the goal. Come and experience Mantra Chanting with a Harmonium keyboard instrument. A harmonium is a free-standing keyboard instrument similar to a reed organ. Sound is produced by air being blown through sets of free reeds, resulting in a sound similar to that of an accordion. The air is usually supplied by bellows operated by the foot, hand, or knees. In much of Europe, the term harmonium is used to describe all pedal-pumped keyboard free-reed instruments, making no distinction whether it has a pressure or suction bellows. They Will Heed Your Call by Michael McAdams When we pray to our Heavenly Father we should always expect an answer. We should also without fail insure we have phrased our plea and prayer in the manner that allows the Holy Spirit to move within us to accomplish that which we have in such faith and confidence made request of our Heavenly Father. Our attitude at this time should be one of humbleness and humility of spirit and we should permit our inner being to communicate with the spirit of God because we have of our own free will made available our receptive consciousness with openness and faith to the advice, guidance, and direction given in response to our plea and prayer. We pray to our Heavenly Father and ask that His angels be with us and protect us as we endeavor to make our way in this existence. We reach out with our consciousness for what our minds conceive as God’s heavenly realm for the purpose of elevating our beings and advancing upon our way with the divine protection of our Heavenly Father and His direct representatives. The Bible speaks of angels, but even if you have not read this you have known about angels your entire life. I believe our Heavenly Father’s direct representatives are known by many names. If you have a biblical and religious background, you will have been taught of angels and archangels within our Heavenly Father’s realm. If you have a more spiritual background and have read books on many topics including the Bible, you will be disposed to refer to God’s angels as spirit guides, spirit teachers, and master teachers. Our Heavenly Father’s direct representatives care not what they are called. They care only that we are willing to recognize their existence and allow them to be an integral part of our life. We are better, happier, and more prepared to face the future with them than without them. On the Sunday morning of November 15, 1992 Wilma Jean Jones was led to receive yet another message dictated from spirit teachers. Her table was already prepared. Her candle sat beside her electric typewriter. As she inserted a sheet of paper into

16

the typewriter and lit her candle, she said a prayer asking for protection and quieted her mind. These words were presented to her: “Prepare yourselves to follow a path that will bring circumstances to a head and that will adequately supply the need which your spirits require. Occupation brings you close to your goals; however consequences, the results of your actions, will remove all doubts and fears concerning the outcome of your progress. Pretentions bring remorse so counteract these results by contrasting that which you are in spirit. We try to answer your questions already satisfied within your spirit, but let us emphasize once again that true devotion to this cause will bring results. Happenings already in focus tend to deny entry into this realm of beings; however, we carry an obligation to accommodate those given to our care. You will bring much delight to souls who wander aimlessly without the comfort of this knowledge. Eliminate all causes of dissention among you by preparing your minds to receive our instructions. We have been given the power to use to come against all injustice, therefore delight our means of existence by following our path.” “We utilize our talents and abilities to force circumstances sometimes, the outcome being sought after but never accomplished on your plain of existence. Our methods continue to bring your spirit together with resources above your command. In this manner, our powers and ability to transfer these methods through you will bring discovery on your part that we do not lessen our hold sought after by you in the beginning but strengthen it. We bring the means by which prosperity will come to you and your mother to counteract what tries to attract unbelief and mistrust in your ability to succeed in matters pertaining to your welfare. Take heart that while others may meander through life at odds with themselves, you have supported your beings and brought forth Glory to Him, in view of all that tends to destroy otherwise.” “Bring this message to your attention often and follow after that which beseeches your spirit in times of concern and trouble to look forward and

know that this has only been the means to an end. Glorious revelations will bring more comfort than present occupations. We search now, in exchange for your time, a way to promote your welfare and well being to extract from all that pertains to this reality, that part that touches the hand of God and moves His nature toward your needs. Therefore, as we look with mercy, take solace and comfort knowing we have heard the spirit cries above the words you speak. And you will be removed from all that tries to bring distraction, but does not succeed.” “We have heard the spirit cries above the words you speak.” Your spirit teachers/angels hear the spirit cries above the words you speak as well. They will heed your call. You need do nothing more than open your spirit and your mind to their guidance and direction. Establish your filter of protection. Relax your mind and allow yourself to be receptive. Learn to recognize the “feel” of those thoughts that are incoming. This is the manner in which our spirit teachers work. Offer your plea and prayer and expect an answer. As you progress, answers and information will be given even before you ask. Your spirit teachers know what you seek; as close as our heartbeat and beside us always.

Message of Hope by Marcia Cantrell

Angel Angela’s Message of Hope This blessed time of year holds several meanings for many different people. For some, the Holiday season is a very nostalgic time with memories of years gone by, both happy and not so happy. Our inner child often comes out during this festive time to play and feel again, warm and fuzzy feelings may surface. Another magical occurrence of the season is the remembrance of the true meaning of this sacred time. A time of spiritual solitude, to connect with the Consciousness and knowing the essence of Peace, Love and Compassion. The message that came to Earth was to teach us the meaning of who we truly are. One with each other, One with God. Accept the gift that has been given to us by the Gift and allow this time to truly be an experience of Peace, Love and Compassion as we usher out the old and bring forth a new.

Walnuts

One Smart Nut!

There are many varieties of nuts that provide health benefits, the walnut contains almost twice as many antioxidants as other nuts. Inside the shell of the walnut, the shape resembles a human brain. Nature will inform us sometimes in an uncanny way what we need to add to our diets to replenish and nourish our bodies. Walnuts boost brain power, they contain a high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids which is critical for brain function. Walnuts also contain large amounts of alpha-linolenic acid which is a major contributor to heart health. Research has shown that eating just 1.5 ounces of walnuts a day may reduce the risk of heart disease. It is important to know that walnuts are high in calories, it is best to substitute them for other snacks so that you do not increase your daily intake of calories.

18

It is best to store walnuts in the refrigerator in an airtight container or they can be frozen for up to one year. There are many types of walnuts, they fall into three categories: English, Black and White. They all contain the same health benefits, so one can choose a favorite or consume all three. The English walnut has a mild taste, which are often roasted., the Black walnut has a pungent aroma and robust flavor and can replace the English walnut in recipes. The White or sometimes referred to as the butternut walnut is a rare type that is sweet with an oily texture. The best way to enjoy walnuts is to use them in your favorite baked goods, many Holiday recipes consists of walnuts, some of them have been passed down from generations of families which is a wonderful way to share memories at this festive time of year.

Ayurveda:

An Ancient Practice, In a Nutshell by Tara Pettit

You probably won’t find its age-old secrets in your great-grandmother’s old recipe bin (at least for those of us on the western hemisphere of the world), but this foreign-sounding medicinal practice’s secrets are found in many grandmothers’ old recipe bins on the eastern hemisphere and within traditional Indian culture. And it’s not just any old collection of recipes, but recipes that are literally thousands of years old and which contain the healing wisdom that only thousands of years of practice and study can develop. Easterners are returning to some of their ancient roots by rediscovering the healing power that lies within the ancient alternative medicine, Ayurveda. The Essence of Ayurveda Historically, Ayurveda was practiced with the idea that human beings are intimately interconnected and engaged with the natural world. This ancient medicine is grounded in the belief that there is no significant difference between our bodies and the foods we grow or the plants that spring forth from the earth because everything exists and persists from the very same molecular structure and matter. We are so intertwined with the universe, in fact, that our bodies respond to and change with the rhythms and forces of nature. This occurs so deeply and so prevalently within our core that we all can be largely defined by one of the life force energies, what we have come to determine as our dosha. The three doshas that makeup prakruti, or the basic nature of life intelligence, are: vata, the energy of air which is characterized by movement; pitta, the energy of fire which is characterized by digestion and metabolism; and kapha, the energy of the earth which is characterized by lubrication and structure. Each dosha, when expressed in both nature and the 20

human body, represents the dominant expression of particular traits, or basically, a present imbalancing effect of those traits. For example, because pitta is derived from the element of fire, it persists during the summertime and people who are chemically composed of its energy will see many signs of ‘fire’ in their life, such as rosacea, inflammation, sensitive skin and bad sunburns. So, to balance the fiery effects of pitta in someone consumed with it, that person would want to gravitate towards ‘cooling’ tastes, sights, smells and sounds and avoiding ‘inflammatory’ or ‘spicy’ types of foods or products. Adjusting our diets, exercise, skin care regimen and mental/ emotional patterns to better reflect the needs of our dominant dosha will help us live in harmony with nature and help us to glide through, rather than battle, the changing seasons and life cycles. Luckily, Ayurveda’s ancient lifestyle secrets, rooted in natural harmonizing and elemental balancing between our bodies and the earth, have been passed down through generations of Indian culture and after its recent widespread renewal in eastern medicine, eventually found its way into some western doctors’ practice. Today, even in the western world, we have a solid link to genuine Ayurvedic practitioners who can guide us in our journey to rebalance our doshas and center our lives more closely around what our individual inner consciousness thrives on, which will ultimately connect us to everything and everyone in the world. Discovering Your Dosha Are you feeling a little lost about where you fit in with these unseen natural energies and how you will be impacted by the changing seasons? First and foremost, it is essential to discover what your dominant body constitution, or dosha, is, which will open the door to a new world of Ayurvedicbased diet, exercise, skin care and general wellbeing practices. Dosha quizzes, through a series of Dec / Jan 2013

questions dealing with your chemical makeup and emotional tendencies, can help you determine what your leading dosha energy is. Taking more in-depth dosha quizzes will both confirm your leading dosha and get you to start thinking about your body’s own unique functioning a little more. Once you know your dosha, you will begin to learn the differences between all three doshas and the energy feeding practices that support each one. This contributes to a higher quality of life that is in line with what your body energy needs. Why Ayurveda? In a world and time where the vitality of nature and our connection to it has been severely damaged, the question really should be why not Ayurveda? Why not try reconnecting to the ultimate healing properties of Mother Earth through an age-old, life-rejuvenating discipline? Where humanity has done everything possible to disconnect the essence of life from a functional, dependent relationship with the earth, rediscovering nature’s wholly healing offerings and returning to a healthy, balanced standing with the universe would propel the quality of human health towards a higher experience of living. Ayurveda opens the door to a new experience of life, one that is exalted along with the original design and purpose of existence. While completely reverting from your routine lifestyle to something fundamentally and practically different seems daunting and almost impossible, the truth is, incorporating any aspect of Ayurveda into your life, no matter how small, opens the door to a new world of life-sustaining opportunities.

Adrenal Fatigue by Tommy R. Thompson, DC, NMD, LaC The Winter is coming upon us, the water element is prevalent now, western diagnosis is chronic fatigue, it can be caused by a variety of issues, many times I find the problem will arise from chronic adrenal stress. Adrenals are the small glands that set on top of the kidneys, they produce hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol. These have been closely related to the fright or fight hormones. It feels like the lion is constantly at the door. If we have long bouts of uncontrolled stress, pensiveness, and worry, we put the body in this chronic pattern. The adrenals normally recover, but with chronic long term bouts of stress, coupled with bad diets, and chronic use of caffeine, eventual burn out will happen. As the adrenals continue to fatigue, the thyroid is effected, most Americans are iodine deficient anyway. Low salt diets makes the situation worse because it is where most people get there iodine, hence the term iodized salt. The RDA is .07 micrograms to prevent goiters, the average Japanese person ingests 14mg due to their high sea vegetable intake and they don’t suffer so many health issues as Americans do. Most Midwest women show low levels of iodine, that’s when the adrenals wear out, they pull the thyroid down. It takes a car jack to get them out of bed in the morning, after lunch these people are consuming mass quantities of caffeine to keep going. When it’s time to sleep they lie awake staring at the ceiling. What the Acupuncturist calls eyes open, eyes closed disease, basically saying their eyes stay open at night and want to close during the day. The long term effect of adrenal burnout is rapid aging. In Acupuncture the Chinese do not differentiate

between Kidneys and Adrenals. The Kidneys/Bladder channel rule the back, head of the hair, bones and sexual reproduction. When we look at stress these are the most effected areas, advanced aging, hair loss/ graying, joint degeneration, and decrease sex drive. Some of the biggest cause of chronic fatigue beside uncontrolled stress, is if you have a history mononucleosis or similar viral infections. These people have been on many bouts of antibiotic because of a poor immune system, that is why it is hard for them to recover. Because of their fatigue many are placed on antidepressant thinking their depression is the cause of their fatigue. These people need to take serious control of their diets and stress. The viral load is in their intestine tract, every time they get sick they take antibiotics, or their diets are weak they continue to eat the same sugary, fatty foods day in and day out,

this further compromises their gut, allowing yeast, bad bacteria and the viruses to take charge. It is a well known fact that viruses exploit the body during highly stressful times when the immune systems is sluggish. Cold sore out breaks, shingles in the elderly. There are herbal remedies and whole food glandular that can help adrenal fatigue, also there are acupuncture treatments to balance Kidney/ bladder channels to enhance recovery If you have been experiencing fatigue we can help, give use a try! HDoggie ow Much is that in the Window? by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger Do you remember that song? I’ll bet you’ve heard a Mom or Dad say something like “Susie/Sam is getting old enough to take care of a kitten, so let’s go pick one out at the Shelter to give him/her for Christmas”. Here’s one from my own childhood: “Mom and Dad, PLEASE can I have a horse for Christmas?” During the holiday season, parents/spouses/friends often think that an animal will be a wonderful present for someone they love. Or, we want to help a homeless animal we happen to see on TV or on the Internet in the spirit of giving during this time of year. While the above may be very true, let’s stop and think about what goes on for us as humans during this time of year. For most of us in this country, the months of November and December are hectic and stressful. We think about family members we need to see,

24

presents we need to buy, decorating we need to do, special cookies or cupcakes that need to be baked for parties, and on and on it goes. For many of us that work for financial institutions or retailers, there is more stress at work. We are out running errands, we stay up later getting things done, and we feel more tired than usual. We often communicate to clients and our readers that bringing a new animal into your home and your life requires thought, planning, and time at home WITH the new arrival. We liken it to bringing a human baby home in that respect… new parents need to prepare the home for the baby, and realize that their main focus will BE the baby. The same is true, to a lesser degree, when bringing a new dog, cat, bird, hamster, or iguana into your home. It is ESPECIALLY true if the new addition is a puppy that requires training in going to the bathroom outside

Dec / Jan 2013

and not chewing on everything in sight, or a kitten that will be into absolutely everything in the middle of the night! Bringing a new pet into a new home during a time when you are busy, stressed, and tired is not in the best interest of that new pet. They deserve and need more from you. If you are considering giving someone a pet as a gift, we ask that you think carefully about what the best time is for the animal as well as their new human. Consider giving the person a stuffed toy dog, cat, bird or horse as their Christmas gift, with a picture of the new pet enclosed in a card. Set a date to go with that person to pick up the new pet AFTER the holidays are over if at all possible. This will give the person time to plan and to prepare their home for the new addition. Explain to the Shelter/Rescue/breeder that you want to do what is best for that animal, and would they consider holding them for you until after the holidays. Most responsible organizations and people should at least consider doing that for you if they are able. A word to parents on the subject of giving children pets to “teach them responsibility”. I hear that one a lot from parents, and I always cringe when I do. If you want to teach your child responsibility, and that child has not been asking for a pet, then please don’t do it! Give them a routine task to do instead like mowing the lawn each week, or taking out the garbage or cleaning their room. When I asked my parents repeatedly for a horse as a child, they were wise enough to understand that until I was older, I was not going to be capable of caring for a horse entirely myself. Instead we got a dog, and I subjected them to a duck, a snake, a turtle, several goldfish, and hatched praying mantises in my mom’s flower arrangement (she was NOT amused). For those with pets, be sure to take time to acknowledge and connect with them at least briefly each day. They do not understand why we are more stressed and at home less. If you are having family and friends over, please let your pets know ahead of time. If you have a pet that is shy or who does not like noise, please make sure they have a quiet place in the house to go to while company is there. If you are traveling during the holidays, please let your pets know how long you will be gone, and that you are coming back to them. Tell them you love them, and that you always come back.

The Cranial Bones Do They Move? by Paul F. Fulk,

D.C., F.A.S.A. Many anatomists believe that the bones in our head do not move. They all agree that we have cracks in our head, but for what reason? It was 1939 when Dr. William Sutherland, D.O., published a book that illustrated what he meant, when the twenty-eight bones in our head move as we breath. They do have a purpose as they move. The pumps for the cerebral spinal fluid is the movement of the sacrum (tailbone) and the compression of the cranial bones in their movement as we breath. The disruption of their movement can cause severe headaches better known as “migraine headaches”. As we breath in, the cerebral spinal fluid moves up the spine, feeding the brain and spinal cord. As we exhale, the cerebral spinal fluid moves down the spine. This motion provides nutrients to the spinal cord and nerves that eminate from the spine. When this motion is restricted, stagnation of the CSF occurs. The brain and adjacent structures swell, causing severe pain. Does this seem to be an explanation for the “why of headaches” It feels as though you are sitting on one side of your skull and pushing out the other side with your feet.. It becomes unbearable pain in your head. There is a very large bone that forms the front and base of the skull and contains a very important organ that is divided into two parts. It sits in what is called the sella tursica or “saddle-like” hole in this very large bone. The front part of this organ is called the anterior pituitary. It is the master delivery of eight hormones. It becomes a major organ in the control of the majority of the hormones that control your body chemistry. So it is very important that this organ to be functioning properly. The back side of this pituitary gland only controls two hormones. But, very important in the female body is the hormone, oxytosin. This is the hormone that becomes active during the delivery of a baby. It is the hormone that causes the contraction of the uterus expelling the in utero baby, and very important in the birthing process. In the male body it is important in the developing of muscle tissue. The other and only hormone that secreted by the posterior pituitary is the ADH hormone. It may be only one hormone, but it is very important one. ADH stands for Anti-diruetic hormone. Or the main controller of all water in your body. In other words, it controls the bowel, bladder, lungs, blood flow, heart, pancreas, kidney , uterus or prostate and part of the adrenal glands. It may only be one hormone,

26

but it is mighty important when it comes to body function. If you are 60-80% water, how important is it? Caffeine can change this percentage drastically. People who crave chocolate, are generally in need of potassium. Potassium is the essential mineral that makes the posterior pituitary work. So can caffeine in chocolate and coffee change the function of the posterior pituitary gland? You can be the judge of this. It might be, that the sphenoid bone is tilted to the right causing it to malfunction. Magnesium is the essential mineral, generally available in nuts (not peanuts which are legumes), that makes the anterior pituitary function. It can also produce a craving for milk or dairy products. But eight hormones are supplied by the anterior-pituitary gland. It directly affects the thyroid gland, which could have a direct affect on weight control. Seven other hormones are controlled by the anterior pituitary gland. When the sphenoid bone gets tilted to the left, it grossly affects the function of the anterior pituitary gland. This can happen from a slight impact to the head or chin. The sphenoid must be repositioned to a level position, for the gland to work as it should. It does not take much of an impact to the skull to knock the cranial bones out of position, which can cause a major dysfunction of the bodies’ organs. TMJ syndrome and many other biochemical problems can originate from any of the twenty-eight bones in the head being out of place. There are only a few doctors that know how to reposition the bones in the head. So, please have someone who has been performing cranial bone adjustments that knows what they are doing, attempt to reposition the bones in your head. Many malfunctions can occur if they don’t know what they are doing. Visual changes can occur because the optic nerve and artery go throughout the sphenoid bone before they reach the eye. Any change in the position of the sphenoid bone, will alter the visual accuracy and eye function. This is generally not understood by the medical community. Even gastric problems may even occur, when the sphenoid bone is tilted, because the vagus nerve that goes to the stomach from the skull is sometimes impinged, when this bone is tilted. If you have any questions about this problem, call me at 937-434-8066. Copyright 2012 - Paul F. Fulk, D.C.,F.A.S.A.

Divine Connections

Through Meditation by Geraldine (Gerri) Blumgold

I have been an energy healer and channeler since 1979. My journey actually began when I was in my late twenties. In 1972, my aunt and I started reading all the books we could find on Edgar Cayce. We read books by Harold Sherman, Ruth Montgomery, Jess Stern and several other authors. They all talked about meditation as a spiritual tool, a way to connect with your higher self. I had tried meditation before but thought it had no place in my life. I had a highly stressful job at the time which contributed to me getting an ulcer. Around the same time, a group of people were in the area teaching Transcendental Meditation (TM) and I felt drawn to take the class. I started meditating faithfully until I got a second ulcer. I was so discouraged that I thought meditation was not helping me, so I stopped meditating once again. My father died suddenly at the age of 53. That took me to my knees and moved me in the direction of looking for a spiritual home. I had grown up Catholic, but left it as a young adult because it never felt right for me. A year later I found a metaphysical group and I was home. The minister was a channeler and every week we had a class from a spirit guide she channeled.

calming, loving and serene presence. John is an incredible teacher and guide who has always been with me. He radiates love, joy and enthusiasm. Sarah is also a teacher who has a loving and gentle presence. My last guide is my Indian guide, Silver Fox, who I call on if I have physical issues. For me, meditation has been a tool that has connected me to my spiritual guides and my journey in helping others. Give meditation a try. I’m sure it will give you a feeling of peacefulness and may open doors you never dream possible. Experience Gerri as she connects with John at Agape Journey of Awakening on Sunday, Dec 9th - from 11 am to 12 pm – Cost Free (Love offerings are welcome) This is an amazing event. If you have a question, John will take the time to answer it. Let’s have fun with life and enjoy the journey. Spirit guides are beings on the other side (our true home or one may use the term heaven) who study, evolve and then work with people on an earthly plane. My first experience connecting with my spiritual guide was through a guided meditation. It was great! That’s when I knew I was to be an energy healer. I started meditating every day, and I gradually began connecting with my spiritual guides. I wanted to know everything my spiritual guides could teach me right away. My spiritual guides encouraged me to be patient and not rush my learning process. The more I meditated, the more I felt the need to meet with the metaphysical group I had joined and the more I learned to trust my inner self. Meditation became a spiritual tool that helped me to stay centered moment by moment. Presently, I have four guides that I connect with regularly. One is Chie-No, who is a Master energy healer; he is a

Astrology by Mary

Sagittarius November 22–December 21

This is a great time for you personally right now, as there appears to be much interaction with friends, acquaintances, and loved ones. Mid December the new moon will register this, and so does Christmas. However, in the back of your mind you are aware of the necessity to redefine the financial picture. Keep at that as your efforts will eventually pay off. For early Sags, there could be a concern about a parent figure, or perhaps contemplating a move from home.

very long stay, and some of you may find that you are a little more intuitive and receptive than usual, and very likely are dreaming more. Watch your health, and you could be more tired than usual, so pump up the iron. This is leading to the idea that you need to become more precise about where and what you want to be. The holidays look like fun and excitement, and you may discover that you want to invest in new equipment, or even classes.

Capricorn December 21 – January 19

Aries March 20 – April 19

Old soul that you are, you have accepted the role of redefining yourself as regards your physical, mental, and emotional makeup. That’s an ongoing process, but will help you decide clearly where you are going in life and where you want to be. Some of this could mean a sudden change in home base. This time frame shows lots of movement or ideas in the employment scene, which also must be factored into the big picture. Also, you may be having some concerns about a sibling.

You should be feeling footloose and fancy-free these days, as you have walked into the planet Uranus, meaning originality, freedom and breaking from the usual. Right around the holidays it looks like travel – coming and going. Your status in the world is changing also, and the order here is to re-establish your career goals. This includes getting finances in order. There is some possibility that a loved one or two will be under doctor’s care.

Aquarius January 19 – February 18

Taurus April 19 – May 20

For you there is a double hit on your career house during this period, and it usually means that an overhaul is in order. This is annoying to your freewheeling spirit, but part of this is beyond your control, so give in gracefully. There will be lots of fun right around Christmas, with opportunities to see new and old friends. You could suddenly decide to take on some new schooling, or even buy a car! Keep an eye on the expenses.

Your eye is usually on the money picture, and it does look as though there will be much spending or getting during the holidays. Of much importance right now is the condition of the significant other. It could include the health of that individual, or the career opportunities. On the windmills of your mind thee is another planet pushing you to move forward, but you are not inclined just yet to take that on. All in good time is your motto!.

house and is highlighting lots of coming and going with friends and acquaintances. This activity is further accelerated by the planet of new friends, in your house of socializing. Employment matters are not quite so lively, and indicate more obligation and more learning, although it could lead to more money. You are analyzing the financial picture carefully. For some there may be concerns over the well being of a parent, or parent figure.

December looks busy with holiday trips and parties, and then January finds you at home putting everything back to rights and/or recovering. You are also going through a review of finances, and the eclipse in late November will trigger this off. For some, a health issue may keep you down for the count, or there may be indecision about employment. As for partnerships, there could be unexpected activity, maybe someone new coming in, or the familiar one leaving!

a

e Scorpio

Cancer June 22-July 22

For some early Cancers, there could be unexpected changes in the career sector, but supporting planets in the employment field could bring good news for you. Some of you are still working through a shift in close friends and associates, and many of them will be encouraging you to take a chance on love! You early Cancers may find romance with an old flame. A lot of you are aware that your psychic gifts are definitely on the increase, so trust them..

b

As this period begins, you are becoming fully aware of the need to restructure finances, and the major eclipse at Thanksgiving puts this into perspective. Even so, the holidays show lots of money (or attention to) moving around. Into the new year there will be serious attention to paper work (probably taxes), and there continue to be all sorts of changes and new situations when it comes to employment or just work. You always welcome a challenge, so you are on target!

Leo July 22 – August 22

This period starts with quite a bit of activity with the house of significant others and close friends. There will be new ones surfacing as well. You are also enjoying much interaction with groups as well, so the social life is right down your alley. On a slightly different note, matters of family, home and house are requiring serious attention. Employment matters or health issues need to be overhauled, and the money houses indicate that you will have to spend it anyway!

c

October 23 – November 21

Virgo August 22 – September 22

For you hard workers, some of this period will indicate some unexpected changes at work, or even health issues. Tied in with that could be also some surprises in income or outgo. A relative may need your help because of some serious health issues and of course you are always there in a crisis. Relationships and/or romance are being reviewed, and if there is a significant other, don’t let stars in your eyes blind you to the fact that he/she is only human.
