Earth Grounding for Your Health Are you connected to Mother Earth? Why walking barefoot can benefit you! • Your body’s production of electricity allows your cells to communicate and perform basic biological functions necessary for your survival • Your cells generate electrical charges via electrolytes like sodium and potassium using a mechanism known as the “sodiumpotassium gate” • You can harness the electrical charge of the Earth to positively influence your health in numerous ways via grounding, also known as earthing • The easiest way to stay grounded is to walk barefoot outdoors on a natural surface such as grass, sand, or soil

Each issue will be a wonderful adventure with Sage as she travels to amazing destinations. Sage will share her travels with helpful tips, interesting facts about her fun filled and relaxing get-aways! A Texas Hill Country Guest Ranch & Equestrian Lodge I am thrilled to share what I consider to be my home away from home in Texas. Hill Country Equestrian Lodge is one of the blessings I received during COVID.

As a travel editor, this period of course effected my ability to travel. Fortunately, as a creative being, I found ways to work with the flow of energy and found alternative adventures. I have always had a passion for horses and for riding. I spent years as a child on a horse, exploring the hills of Eastern Washington. For me, the energy of connecting with these animals has always been healing. While in Cincinnati, I had the pleasure to partner with Michelle Griffin and her horses to cofacilitate an empowering workshop that was truly life changing. When I moved to Texas, I knew I’d find a way to rekindle my love affair with horses. Ray and I were long overdue for a getaway, so I took it upon myself to find us somewhere in Texas where we could lodge and also ride horses. I knew I wanted more than just trail rides; I wanted to begin riding again and

taking lessons. And it had to be the right facilitator as well, in order to work with me mind, body and spirit. I seriously just Googled horseback riding in Texas Hill Country and this wonderful place was the first thing to show up. It took me all of two minutes to book a stay in one of their cabins for a week and set up lessons and trail riding. Our first of many stays was in summer of 2020. Little did I know it, but I would be staying somewhere that felt like being back in the hills of Ellensburg, Washington where I grew up, and give me another opportunity for healing. Nestled in an oak-studded valley, and encircled by the rugged hills west of Bandera, Texas, Hill Country Equestrian Lodge offers a new perspective on the traditional guest ranch. It’s not a dude ranch! The best thing about it is that it is super laid back. If you want a trail ride, great. If you want a lesson, great. If you want to get cozy in the corner nook in the cabin and read a book and nap, great! You get my drift. There is plenty to do, for riders and non-riders alike. The lodge’s location adjoins the 5500-acre Hill Country State Natural Area and gives guests walkin access to its 40+ miles of trails for riding, hiking, cycling, birding, and viewing of the parks’ abundant wildlife and diverse native plants. The drive from Lake Buchanan is about two hours and it is a beautiful scenic ride through Hill Country. The moment we arrived at the Ranch and pulled up to the century-old ranch house, I was transformed. The minute I met Dianne (the owner/host) I knew we would be friends for life and that she would be a fabulous and no-nonsense teacher for my lessons. Dianne Tobin and Peter Lovett are the owners and hosts of HCEL. I cannot say enough about how they make you feel like family the moment you arrive. The cabins are adorable and are built in historic early Texas architectural style. Each cabin has a full kitchen, rear deck and spacious front porch. Our cabin had a limestone fireplace that stretched from the hard-wood floor to the peak of the 21-foot cathedral ceiling. The cabin was stocked with a basket of fruit and muffins, breakfast foods, coffee, tea and snacks. We arrived around 3 pm, got ourselves settled into

our cabin and took advantage of the swimming pool since it was a hot summer day. The pool is a great addition to the ranch. We enjoyed it every day of our stay. One of the things that I love about the ranch is having the ability to completely decompress. There is no WIFI or cell service in the cabin. My time there was a blend of trail rides, lessons, star gazing, taking long walks and catching up on some romantic novels. Ray and I enjoyed the use of the grille and had many dinners by starlight. Our nights were made up games of Scrabble and conversations about life and where we will travel once things return to “normal” The ranch is situated about ten miles out of the Bandera Texas “Cowboy Capital of the World” It is a fabulous little town that we spent quite a bit of our time exploring. Bandera’s title originated when it became a staging area for the last great cattle drives of the late 1800’s. Confirming Bandera as the “Cowboy Capital of the World,” is a bronze monument which honors the many National Rodeo Champions who call Bandera home, and stands on the Courthouse lawn. Main Street is filled with shops housing antiques, jewelry, western wear, artwork and unique Texas gifts. Bandera is known for a fabulous live music scene. The 11th Street Cowboy Bar has been called the “biggest little bar in Texas.” You can’t leave town without going in to visit with the locals and enjoy an ice-cold Lone Star beer. They have tons of events, including live country music, steak nights and they even host the Cowboy Mardi Gras celebration each year. It is one of our favorite places. We enjoyed a lovely dinner at a gem of a restaurant in Pipe Creek, Texas which is about a 30 minute drive from the ranch. The Backyard Bistro is an awardwinning restaurant that serves a farm to table menu. Great place! Excellent food. The restaurant is in a historic house with fun decor and both indoor and outdoor eating areas. We started with shrimp corndogs served with sweet mango Thai chili dipping sauce as an appetizer. I enjoyed the flounder stuffed with crab

for my entrée, and Ray had the red snapper, which was amazing. For dessert we shared pecan pie, Hoja Santa and Texas wildflower honey ice cream. What a treat! Since our first trip to Hill Country Equestrian Lodge, we have been back three additional times. I have had such an amazing experience working on my riding skills with my friend and teacher, Dianne. For me, riding is now much more than a passion, it is an opportunity to developer greater confidence in myself and overcoming old fears. The energy between a horse and a rider is quite magical once the trust is built. My Zen moments for this trip revolve around the walks in both the early morning and early evenings, with Ray. We saw everything from deer and jack rabbits, to fox and armadillos during our strolls. We also saw the sunrise and set each day as well. As always, I am grateful to share my journeys with you and look forward to the upcoming year of travel.
Blessings, Sage

When our vision changes from a “getting” mentality to a “giving” mentality, miracles happen. We work most of our lives to acquire money in order to buy things to provide for ourselves and those we love, and that’s part of living our lives. But when we shift from selling to serving, our lives acquire a spiritual aspect that opens our hearts and deepens our relationships with family and friends, with ourselves, with the world, and with The Divine. Sometimes this shift doesn’t occur until after retirement and we have the opportunity to shift into the people we wanted to become years ago. But, the shift doesn’t happen simply because we have retired, and often it doesn’t happen if the seeds weren’t planted during those income-earning years. We can begin the transformation from selling to serving, from getting to giving while gainfully employed. For some people this paradigm shift launches them into a new career, even perhaps a new form of income that allows them to resign their old work and concentrate on the new. This shift into service mode is a powerful force that grows more powerful as the Universe works together with us to heal our planet. The ego must be kept under control, but if we keep focused on service and allowing the fruits of our labor to be reinvested into additional service, we will succeed. When our vision is of a healed world, our resources multiply, miracles abound, and we become co-creators with The Divine.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all.”

The Promise of Spring by Cynthia White Flower
Out of the darkness springs forth new life, light and warmth bestowing the gifts of love’s manifestation. “Awaken” it says to you. Stand up and breathe in the new life that surrounds you. Feel the generosity, as the new growth develops and multiplies. Rise in Mother Nature’s revelry and accept the gifts of new vitality that rush to greet you. Spring is calling. Blessed are we to rejoice in this day, for the promise of Spring brings new beginnings, abundance and healing. You are given the opportunity to sow the seeds of faith, hope and love in your garden of life! How creative you can be! Faith is the tool of positive thinking. To believe that the best is yet to come is to open the door for the best to enter. Matthew

7:7 instructs us to “Ask and you shall receive.” Ascended Master’s teachings show that strong emotion coupled with thought brings about manifestation. Belief in ourselves is the promise of tomorrow. Have faith. Hope is the spark that turns into a fire as we hold on to our dreams. Let’s take it up a notch. Let’s not expect miracles, let’s rely on them! (1) By becoming an active participant in growing our dreams, we come closer to our goals, giving our hope somewhere to go. Manifest what you are hoping for. Love is the abundance of the Universe that fills us all. We have only to open to it as a bud opening to the sun. Love is the glue that holds life together. Love is the promise and the fulfillment. Love is the reason “why.” Jumping in with all that we have is to fulfill the promise of

_____________ spring, as the promise of new beginnings waits for us to invite them in. We are all students of life. Whether we realize it or not, we spend all of our time learning about ourselves. “I like this… I don’t like that… I feel this… I think it is this way… I like going there… I don’t like the way that makes me feel… I’ve changed my mind…” Our lessons are daily and endless. Spring reminds us to renew what we are learning. It is the time of birth renewed. We also spend our whole life healing. We heal from what was said, what was done, our karmic patterns both, those we have made and those we have inherited. Master Kuthumi says, “To know the self is to see the self, to see the self is to understand the self, to understand the self is to learn, to learn is to teach – this is the obligation set by each student as they walk the path to healing.” (2) As we navigate this path of faith, hope, love, learning and healing, we are reminded to make wise choices. Where you take your consciousness is where your world lies. We are shown through spring, that light ignites life. Let us choose to live in the light together in harmony as spring gives us the example of just how beautiful life can be.

BTestimonial aker Chiropractic Choosing Chiropractic Care was Life Changing for Me. I Wish I Would Have Known How Much It Would Help with Migraines Alone!
Amanda Grow and Dr. Patrick Baker “I decided to give chiropractic care a try in August of 2012. When I initially made the appointment to see Dr. Patrick Baker at the Fairfield Clinic, I had no idea that I would still be going a year and a half later or that it would turn out to be such a life-changing decision. I originally made the appointment because I was having severe neck pain. I could not tilt my head from side to side and I would wake up from sleeping with constant headaches. After the spinal exam and x-ray results were in, I found out that I was suffering from a condition called Forward Head Posture. I have also suffered with migraines since I was thirteen, and Dr. Baker assured me that the chiropractic adjustments would help with those as well. I decided to proceed with Dr. Baker’s treatment plan, and it was one of the best choices I have ever made.
10
After the first couple weeks of adjustments, I noticed a dramatic decrease in the level of neck pain I was experiencing. The constant headaches began to subside, and within a month, I was virtually pain free. And that was just the beginning. I also noticed that I was sleeping better and had more energy. And after just a couple months of care, the migraines became less frequent. I went from having migraines three to four times a month to just three to four times a year in the time I’ve been a patient. I wish I would have known years ago how much chiropractic care could help with the migraines alone. I would have started going sooner. And I urge anyone reading this that does get migraines to give it a shot. It will really improve your quality of life, much more so than those triptans we all get when we tell our doctors that we get migraines. As if the migraine itself isn’t bad enough, we’re prescribed pills that only work some of the time and leave us in a sleepy haze for three days afterwards. No thanks. I’ll take a massage and an adjustment instead. At least then I know I’m treating the problem and not the symptom – as evidenced by the fact that I no longer get the migraines with any real frequency. And when I do get them, they are much less severe. I no longer take triptans to treat them. Or any prescription medicine, for that matter. Since I had been feeling so much better, I asked Dr. Baker to help me with stepping down off the antidepressant I had been prescribed three years ago because I had no lingering symptoms of depression. I felt like the meds were keeping me in a constant fog. He referred me to Dr. Theodore Cole at the Cole Center for Healing, and with their help, I was able to successfully step down off the medicine two months ago without any side effects, except a little weight loss. Which brings me to the bonus: since attending the Baker Chiropractic Total Food Makeover seminar
Spring Splendor 2021
in February of 2013 and slowly implementing the nutrition and fitness guidelines that were provided, I have lost 40 pounds. And I’m still losing!

Sigils in Sound by Jill Mattson
Say “Hocus pocus” and magic occurs! Or so we were taught as a tiny child. Surprisingly, ancient sages actually used the vibratory components of sound for many benefits. Since we don’t fully understand this “magical” quantum science today, the ancient ideas are relegated to “hocus pocus” or just child’s play. Recall that the Jewish musicians played music around the walls surrounding Jericho for 7 days and nights to make the huge, impenetrable walls crumble. Conjure up a snake charmer mesmerizing a snake with music. Music was an ingredient that magicians amassed along with numerous other items in a magical spell to accumulate enough subtle-energy to alter matter. Music & magic were not child’s play nor trickery. Subtle energy from magic was a form of quantum energy. Another ingredient in a magic spell was shapes. For example, angle sigils (shapes) are used in white magic. Recall that graduation from a reiki class
12
requires viewing the reiki symbols. Ancient masters said that viewing a Hindu yantra (a shape) could result in a person achieving ascension in just one life time. Without extensive viewing of the yantra shape, ascension could easily take 700 to 1,000 years. Wow. How would have thought that looking at something could make such a difference? Enlightenment was advanced by viewing “sacred geometry”, shapes found in nature. And, how does that work? A 2-D shape gives off microscopic frequencies. Inventor of human BioAcoustics, Sharry Edwards, can hear distinctive sounds (below the hearing range of most people) for each 2-D shape. Quantum-frequencies emanate from shapes. Everything is energy and different shapes would have difference patterns, with different frequencies augmenting or canceling each other out. Angle sigils (shapes) were believed to create the
Spring Splendor 2021
sacred sound-signature of a highly evolved being, an angel. Once again, the shape was associated with a high energy. This shape was used to establish connection with an angel, like a phone line. What is the legend behind a sigil and how does it work? Perhaps this explanation will help us understand how a shape of an angel sigil worked its magic. Imagine that you are a translucent angel, and you receive the thought streams of many people, as if you constantly hear many radio channels at once. If you choose to involve-intomatter and inhabit a human body, you shut off all radio channels so that you hear only one channel – your thoughts. If string theory was correct and everything at its smallest level is infinitesimal, vibrating strings, then you knot all but one string to stop the vibrations you are aware of. This shuts off energy and information channels from yourself. The pattern of the sound and light knot tied in the infinitesimal strings was traced so that one could undo this knot (or blockage) at a later date and receive sounds (vibrations & information) from the infinitesimal strings again. That is what a sigil is. It is the sounds that open direct-communications with an angelic being. The viewing of the reiki signal opens the chakras in your hands so that white light flows through them for healing purposes. It unknots the infinitesimal strings that have blocked light that used to flow out of your hands before you were a human. Viewing an angel sigil, creates energies that directly connect you to the associated angel. The sigil is like an interdimensional portal. Sigils were used in the Egyptian and Kabballah’s Tree of Life. Each sephiroth (circle on the Tree of Life) contains a written symbol from their ancient language. (Ancient languages were not symbolic like languages are today, but were encoded-sound-vibrations used for the beneficial purpose of every syllable and word.) Each Sephiroth’s symbol was believed to be a gateway to the energy of an attribute of god. As mankind involved into matter, we lost the higher octaves and vibrations of god. We became a “Shadow of God” or “children of god”, that entered duality, experiencing positive and negative energies, plus felt separated from the all-encompassing energies of god. Kabballah disciples viewed the sephiroth symbols for endless hours to receive emanations of divine energy. The sephiroth symbols were a “portal” to the energies of god.
Infinity
The author has rediscovered the ancient method of transposing the visual sigil patterns to sounds. This significantly increases their potency. Ancient sigils (sacred symbols) were carved into stone to preserve the vibratory pattern that unleashes higher energies and connectivity, like viewing the reiki symbols that open clogged portals in your hand so white light streams out. The author’s method transposes these sacred shapes into sounds and harmonics. Harmonics are a vital component of all sounds, and necessary to “unlock” these portals. The harmonics are created with vowel sounds – ancient patterns of vowel sounds used to obtain high dimensional energies. In Mattson’s sound-healing virtual school located at her website, you can enjoy: ancient teachings, ingest sound-sigils of angels and sound codes of the Tree of Life’s sephiroth, front and back chakra sigils and even sigils to open up energies from the stars. Try them! Here is another location to enjoy the ancient uplifting sound sigils in sound! jillmattson.hearnow.com There were many ancient secrets held by masters that are turning out to be practical methods to manage quantum energies. As scientific methods become more sophisticated, they can measure quantum energies and verify the benefits of many ancient practices. Someday we will enjoy the knowing not only secrets of ancient masters, but how and why they worked.

The Great Divide
by Angels of Seven as Given to Rev. Marcia Cantrell
Your world appears divided from the view and perspective of those of us who can see and hear from above. Not only are we above, we are also among you. The great chaos that has spread from and to all corners of the earth has created a great divide amongst God’s children. The divide we are speaking of has nothing to do with political parties or the left and right. Our brothers and sisters we are speaking of the divide between those who are awake and those who we call sleeping. Let us explain: God’s children who are awake are aware of the evil that is struggling to keep a strong hand on earth’s population through various ways. Be made known evil has a plan, a plan that has worked for them since the beginning of time. Those who are awake realize this plan and are fighting back to stop this evil. Those who are awake and have joined in the fight are called Patriots. They have joined together in various ways through their love of as you say, through the love of God and country. This is much greater than just the love of country. Those Patriots have experienced that love of God also includes the love of our fellow man and the importance of service, coming together to unite and stand for our Creator.
Those who are awake can see through the illusion and see what the New World will be. We tell you ascension is going to happen. In order to ascend to this New World YOU MUST BE AWAKE. Brothers and sisters we are here to say our wish is for all Earth peoples to be all knowing and ready for this wondrous event. However we know there will still remain those who will not be prepared. We call upon the Creator’s children to open your eyes and ears, see and learn what is occurring and know why. The evil ones are losing. Light will always be victorious over darkness. Evaluate your ascension path. This path is your road to the New World. Are you ready? Angels of Seven About the Author: Marcia is an ordained minister of the Seminary of Spiritual Peacemaking founded by James Twyman. She has a Masters of Social Work degree and with the assistance of her Angels and Guides, provides spiritual counseling for those seeking healing. She offers other healing modalities including Seichim energy and Past Life Regression Therapy. Marcia is humbled and honored to channel other Light Beings including Yeshua and her Guardian Angel Angela.
My brothers and sisters, those who are not awake, who are sleeping have not realized or accepted this righteous movement to save America and the world. These brothers and sisters have made the choice to remain in the plan of the evil ones, accepting whatever they are told by false prophets who come in various forms. They do not question and continue to follow blindly. Brothers and sisters we ask that you pray for those who are not awake and do not realize that their sleep is preventing them from the release of the illusion you all, peoples of the Earth have been under since the beginning of time. The illusion is all you have believed in, is not true and will no longer continue.

Heaven-Sent Birthday Greeting I was turning a year older in a couple of days, my family decided they would take me out for dinner and was asking what special thing I wanted to do on my birthday. I really did not want anyone to go to any trouble or fuss, but I was excited to get the family together where we would be all in one place celebrating the occasion. It was the morning of my birthday, as I awoke I was feeling a little bit older with stiff joints etc., but felt better as I began to get moving. I was anxious to get started with my day, when I got a call from my brother-in-law telling me my Mom had just been rushed to the hospital.
My family still hoped to at least take me out later for dinner since my Mom’s condition improved, but I did not want to leave my Mothers side, I told them I could always move birthday plans to another day. As I was sitting with my Mom, she awoke out of a deep sleep, she asked me what day it was. I told her it was Tuesday, she responded saying it is not just any Tuesday, it is your birthday. She fell back to sleep, day turned into night. I felt there was nothing else I could really do, and feeling rather tired, I told my Mom I would see her in the morning. I began to walk towards the parking lot to drive home. It was raining, in fact it really started to rain hard and the wind was blowing, I began to open the exit door of the hospital and knew I was in for a good soaking when at the corner of my eye a mylar balloon came out of nowhere being forced by the wind in my direction. I grabbed the ribbon because no matter how hard I tried I could not free it away from my face. I finally took a good look at it, it had a rainbow on it, then I could not believe what the large letters had read, “Happy Birthday!” What a surprise! The wind sailed the balloon towards the sky. I smiled in the pouring rain as I made my way to my car! – Ann C.
My Mom had been suffering heart problems for years and had some serious close calls, after all being 83 years old, it was not easy to battle with heart disease. I arrived at the hospital and quickly inquired about the status of my Mother’s condition. She was in stable condition, I sat with her throughout the day, they had moved her on the cardiac floor for observation, my brothers and sister lived out of town, so I was calling most of the day to let them know her condition.

The Healing Power
of Spiritual Gardening by Deb Bowen, MSW
- Edgar Cayce reading 345-2
I began reading that plants have consciousness, and delved into the notion that we could communicate with each other. I dug a fern from a roadside ditch, planted it in a pot, and begged it to live. It did.
Mr. Cayce understood that all beings on the planet are deeply connected to each other, and that all beings resonate from the same energy source. This, of course, includes the plant kingdom. When we humans join our energy with that of the plant kingdom, we help to bring about healing for all of Mother Earth.
The fern began to share information with me, and I began to listen. Not only did the fern teach me the best ways to care for its physical needs, but equally important, how to care for its emotional and spiritual needs – what brought it joy, what frightened it, with what other plants it wanted to share space, and more.
If you’re like me, right now you’re itching to get your hands in the dirt and greet spring with joy and hope. Now is a great time to consider your relationship with plants that surround you, not only in a physical sense, but in ways that resonate deeply in your spirit.
From that fern, and from many other plants with whom I’ve lived, I’ve learned about stewardship. I learned that the plants with whom I lived weren’t “mine,” but rather I’d become a steward of each of them, and, in a broader sense, of all Mother Earth’s beings.
Plants teach us how to be in the world. Plants teach us how to spread our roots into the soil of our soul, how to reach outward for love that sustains us, and how to radiate joy from within us. The key, of course, is learning how to connect to the messages that plants give us so that we too are grounded in the soil of our soul, the love from above us, and the joy within us. The concept is deceptively simple, the actually doing it, much more complex.
Each plant can teach us how to connect with its unique vibration, how to see beyond its physical being into its spirit, and how to conceptualize a world of connectedness that has no hierarchy among the beings who inhabit it. In this way, we are able to see the oneness of ALL life, of all creation, as Cayce points out.
In ALL NATURE the Spirit of Creation is EMANATING!
I grew up on a barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean, where growing flowers was left to the few ladies of the local garden club who had the stamina to fend off ocean winds and salt spray. (My mother was not among them.) I didn’t know anyone who had a vegetable garden.
Our connection with the plant kingdom can lead us to connections with the Devic realm – the world of elves and fairies and sprites. We can work with the elements, the four directions, the mineral kingdom, the phases of the moon and more. We truly are all related in a deep sense of the word, and it is that deep connection that helps us heal ourselves and our planet.
When I moved into my own home in my early 20s,

Put the “Spring” Back in Your Step with These Herbs
Don’t be afraid to acknowledge that you see fairies as ye study, for you will nurture these experiences. Don’t be afraid to say that you see the gnomes which would hinder peoples at times. - Edgar Cayce reading 5359-1 All I’ve discussed above can be put into practice in very concrete ways. You truly can sit with, sense, see, and hear information from the energetic forces of plants. You can create sacred space in which plants will flourish and be happy, whether you have one plant in a pot on your balcony or acreage.

You Plant Seeds Everywhere You Go by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE
Everywhere you go, everything you do, each person you encounter, you touch --- somehow --- and leave part of yourself with them. These are the seeds you sow on a daily basis. If you are a parent, you are obviously planting and growing seeds with and through your children. If you have a partner or long-term committed relationship, you are constantly influencing each other. What kind of “garden” is your workplace? How healthy is that soil? What kind of seeds or nutrients do you contribute to that environment? Your friends and chosen community are by your choice, so they often are the richest gardens you grow, but you aren’t able to be with them as much
20
as your family, so they often serve as nutrients for your soil. Your family has certainly planted seeds in you, some are visible and some not so much, but the fruit you bear often bears witness to your formative years. You also sow seeds in your internal garden, even when you aren’t around others, with your thoughts, emotions, and actions you take to care for your body (or not). So just how intentional are you about your seed sowing? What seeds are you planting? What seeds to you want to plant? Are you being intentional about nurturing the seeds you’ve sown?
Spring Splendor 2021
Do you discuss self-growth or mutual growth goals with your children, partners, family and friends? When you find yourself in a toxic environment or around noxious people how do you respond? Are you still somehow able to intentionally sow seeds of love, joy, hope, and faith? It can be a struggle, especially if you are exposed on a daily basis. This is why tending to your own garden is so important. When you see “weeds” in your internal garden, maybe from a dysfunctional family or past trauma, do you just try to throw dirt over it? Yank it out fast but leave some roots that can regrow and continue to choke out healthy vegetation? Or do you take the time to dig in deep, get to the root, and dissolve it? When you sow seeds of faith, hope and love in your garden of life, you grow, blossom, you bear fruit that creates new seeds you can sow. Then you become a lifeforce in your world, making it more beautiful and helping feed those around you with healthy, life-giving, love-enhancing nutrients.

Gardening Helps Relieve Stress by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Gardening is one of life’s simple pleasures. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, digging in the dirt, planting and nurturing plant life fills a void in many people’s lives. Some call it spiritual while others describe it as therapeutic or stress relieving. Indeed, planting a garden lets you connect with nature in a way that you probably crave, even if you don’t exactly realize it. This is why many people find gardening to be addictive — in a good way. What starts as a few flowerpots on your patio may soon morph into a flower bed or raised vegetable garden. And that’s just part of the fun. The opportunities, and the benefits you may reap, are virtually endless, from harvesting the literal fruits of your labor to creating habitat for pollinators and beyond. Why Is Gardening Good for You? Most people start gardening because they have a desire to grow their own food and/or beautify or otherwise alter their landscape (such as planting shrubs for privacy). However, most people continue gardening because the benefits are just too good to pass up. Among them: 1. Stress Relief A study published in the Journal of Health Psychology tested the stress-relieving effects of gardening among 30 people.1 First they performed a stressful task, then were assigned to either 30 minutes of outdoor gardening or 30 minutes of indoor reading. Levels of the stress hormone cortisol were measured and the participants self-reported their mood. While both gardening and reading led to decreases in cortisol, the decreases were more significant in the gardening group. Further, “positive mood was fully restored after gardening, but further deteriorated during reading.” This suggests that gardening promotes relief from acute stress. 2. Reduce Symptoms of “Attention Fatigue” It’s suggested that people have a finite capacity for directed attention (the type required for sending emails, making phone calls, etc.). When this capacity gets used up, attention fatigue sets in and you may become irritable, easily distracted and stressed. The symptoms of attention fatigue are similar to those felt by people with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), except that attention fatigue is considered a
22
temporary condition that can be relieved by ample time for rest. When you immerse yourself in nature, including via gardening, you get to take a break from directed attention and instead engage in “involuntary” or “effortless” attention. This helps to relieve attention fatigue and has been linked to superior attention.2 Researcher Andrea Faber Taylor, Ph.D. in the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign told CNN:3 “The breeze blows, things get dew on them, things flower; the sounds, the smells … All of these draw on that form of attention.” 3. Improve Mental Health and Well-Being According to a survey by Gardeners’ World magazine, 80 percent of gardeners reported being “happy” and satisfied with their lives compared to 67 percent of non-gardeners.4 Perhaps it’s no coincidence that gardeners are happier. Mycobacterium vaccae is a type of bacteria commonly found in soil. Remarkably, this microbe has been found to “mirror the effect on neurons that drugs like Prozac provide.”5 It helps to stimulate serotonin production, helping to make you feel happier and more relaxed. No wonder so many people describe their garden as their “happy place.” In one animal study, mice that ingested mycobacterium vaccae had a demonstrated reduction in anxiety and improved learning. The researchers noted that natural exposure to microbes may be important for emotional health and behavior:6 “Recent studies show that contact with tolerogenic microbes is important for the proper functioning of immunoregulatory circuits affecting behavior, emotionality and health … Collectively, our results suggest a beneficial effect of naturally delivered, live M. vaccae on anxiety-related behaviors … supporting a positive role for ambient microbes in the immunomodulation of animal behavior.” 4. Benefit Brain Health A systematic review examined the impact of gardens and outdoor spaces on the mental and physical well-being of people with dementia. The research suggested that garden use, whether it be watering plants, walking through a garden or sitting in one, leads to decreased levels of agitation or anxiety among the patients.7 Spending time in a garden may also help to reduce your
Spring Splendor 2021
risk of developing dementia in the first place. As reported by CNN:8
an intimate connection with life itself. The researchers explained:12
“Two separate studies that followed people in their 60s and 70s for up to 16 years found, respectively, that those who gardened regularly had a 36 percent and 47 percent lower risk of dementia than non-gardeners, even when a range of other health factors were taken into account.
“ … we can propose that gardens and gardening represent multidimensional phenomena in the lives of many older adults and it is much more than a physical activity in a designated space where time and energy are exerted for cultivating fruits and vegetables.
These findings are hardly definitive, but they suggest that the combination of physical and mental activity involved in gardening may have a positive influence on the mind.” 5. Exercise
Gardens and gardening can also represent an intimate connection with life itself through caring and being a steward for living organisms that also reciprocate with nourishment, aesthetics, and existential meaning in the context of senescence.
Gardening gets you up and moving about, which is beneficial on multiple levels. In fact, gardening can even be a moderate to high-intensity workout, depending on which tasks you do.
… the added dimension of environmental connection and awareness into the experience of the aging process could serve as a template for a new “elder culture” and a sustainable future.”
According to research published in HortTechnology, digging and raking give you a high-intensity workout while the following gardening tasks are akin to a moderateintensity workout:9 •Weeding •Mulching •Hoeing •Sowing seeds •Harvesting •Watering •Mixing growing medium •Planting transplants Adding to gardening’s allure is the fact that it represents functional exercise. Movements such as pushing, pulling, lifting and digging work multiple muscle groups at a time and keep you adept at the types of movements you need to function on a daily basis. Plus, gardening helps to improve balance, flexibility and sensory perception. 6. Increased Nutrition The National Garden Association (NGA) estimates that while the average U.S. family spends $70 per year to plant a vegetable garden, they grow about $600 worth of produce — that’s a $530 return on your investment.10

Further, the extra nutrients you’ll gain from eating your harvest of fresh fruits and vegetables is immeasurable in terms of its benefit to your health. Not to mention, people who garden tend to eat more produce in general. According to one study published in the American Journal of Public Health, 56 percent of those who planted a community garden ate fruits and vegetables at least five times a day compared to 25 percent of non-gardeners.11 7. Existential Meaning Research suggests that gardening goes far beyond the practical purpose of growing plants for food. A study in the Journal of Aging Research even suggested it could have a beneficial impact on the aging process by giving people

Artist of Life, Drawing from Within by Patti Lightflower
“And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Genesis 2:7 KJV Dollmakers are creators forming from earthly materials beings born of their imaginations. These figures are diverse as human like dolls, teddy bears, toy soldiers, creatures and in our time, virtual avatars. For many doll owners and doll makers there is a magical illusion of life. To quote Einstein, “Reality is merely an illusion; albeit a very persistent one.” Could this mean this illusion of a living doll is just as real as the illusion of reality? While watching sample clips on the computer screen my son shared with me, over the past year of his work developing an animated 3D game world with characters, I began to wonder about how god-like this work appears. The creation of a new world and then
24
inhabiting it – along with adding a few challenges and obstacles for growth and advancement. I was fascinated. I asked him if he felt like the puppeteer, Mr. Geppetto who made Pinocchio, as I marveled at the animated human-like being moving and behaving realistically and seemingly independently across the screen in imagined fantastic realms. A friend working with clay is now finishing up the details on a realistic life size human figure. It is captured in a dance movement so ready to continue in the pivot, outstretched arms posed, eternally or momentarily paused. Being shown this work while I was preparing for this article, I asked him about the creation process. He wrote back, “I love it. It’s playing god with mud.” For several years I have been toying around with ideas for making dolls. Over this time, I have collected a

few books with beautiful illustrations for inspiration and how-to instructions for gathering materials and getting started. There are many resources on the internet for inspiration. You will find delightful images and many links to hand-made dolls made from paper, textiles, wood, metal and whatever you can find that works. Usually, I will skim through, skip or return later to introductions and forewords to books. I like to jump right in unless there is a notice that it is important to read first and go to chapter one. But now I want to know who these doll makers are and why they wanted to make dolls. I wanted to know the history of dolls and figures and I wanted to climb up into the back of a closet to pull out a yellowed and frayed cardboard box with a now antique doll that had been my birth mother’s which she gave me during a rare visit as a small child. It had red hair and freckles, like me. All my girl dolls’ names were Suzy. Looking back this seems a little odd. Why didn’t I give them each a different name, I wonder? It seemed I was identifying an inhabitant of the doll that went from doll to doll and her name was Suzy. Even Barbie got renamed. It was natural for me to do this. I named my only boy doll, Johnny. Johnny and Suzy. I learned a few years ago that I have a multi-great aunt and uncle, Suzanne and John, in my ancestry. Asking the night sky for a sign shortly after learning this, a small shooting star made a thin line across the sky. That happened too often so I dismissed it and then forgot I had asked as I gazed on into the star dotted sky. Suddenly the biggest streak of light shot across just above the horizon and so bright that I saw it first out of the corner of my eye as I wasn’t looking in that direction. It burst open into a large blue, yellow and reddish orange flame and left a trail of smoke in the sky that lingered in the moonlight for some time. I thought, now that is a sign.
in ancient Rome young girls offered their dolls to the goddess Diana at maturity hoping to be blessed with fertility. A rite of passage ceremony. Another remarkable find for me in doll history was discovering that Thomas Edison invented the first talking doll in 1870. It contained his newly invented miniature phonograph with real women’s voices trying to sound childlike. Edison’s nursery rhyme reciting doll did not go over very well as the recorded voices sounded scary. These dolls were likely offered to a different deity. Dolls are found to be therapeutic and healing. Children given puppets with characters representing various emotions, expressed feelings that they would not so freely have revealed otherwise, in a process developed by Barb Kobe, author of “The Healing Doll Way”. Her book is an essential must-have resource guiding one through the process of creating an art doll “for self-discovery, awareness, and transformation” with inspiring images, personal stories, and insights into the symbolism and meanings of trinkets and findings for adornment and intentions. The author shares this quote from the book “Women Who Run with Wolves” by Clarissa Pinkola Estés: “For centuries, humans have felt that dolls emanate both a holiness and mana – an awesome and compelling presence which acts upon persons, changing them spiritually. Dolls are believed to be infused with life by their makers. They are used as markers of authority and talismans to remind one of one’s own power.”
“All of my dolls are wishing dolls. Each was created to manifest a wish or a dream.” – Dayle Doroshow in “Beyond Paper Dolls” by Lynne Perrella
Some art doll makers view the experience of creating the doll as the most important part of the healing and self-awareness process and once the doll is done it is of little value to them. Perhaps their dolls had intentions of their own to serendipitously journey to their meant to be forever home. Others find the finished doll has become an extension of some part of themselves or just a silent treasured listening friend. Like most creative activities there are times when the creator becomes intuitively aware of what the doll wants or needs as it is being made. The original plan

may have called for a sweet cherub, but the result instead resembles more a mischievous imp. This also is a part of breathing life into your creativity as you pour your heart and soul into your work. “Each and every time a new doll comes into being, I am humbled. I never know in advance, what will come about. It’s a process of letting go and letting Spirit direct my actions.” Chris Flynn, from “How to Create a Spirit Doll”
Bio for Patti Lightflower: I have always enjoyed working with textiles. As a child I watched my grandmother turn colorful cotton feed bags into play clothes. I designed and made dresses for my dolls from scraps of fabric and shoes for them from orange peels, which I pretended were leather. I’ve attended art classes at the University of Cincinnati in the 70’s and have studied with textile artists at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, as well as with many other professionals in their studios over the years. My long-time passion has been the study of hands along with their owners, being creative and expressing my artistic side allows for manifesting something tangible whereas reading hands is more esoteric. It is Spring. Since my mother died, everything reminds me of her. She loved spring. She was an avid gardener, self-taught and extremely gifted in creating outdoor spaces of beauty. Everywhere, I see her and hear her wit and wisdom. I am older now and I have come to appreciate something about her I simply took for granted my whole life. I wrote in this column shortly after her death that she always chose joy. She did. But, it was more than that. My mother so loved life that she found the joy in everything. I have been looking at pictures of her. She was always smiling or laughing. Even in the last three months of her life when she was in agony and was frightened that she might not have any remedies left to preserve her life, she was always smiling and laughing. I have pictures of her in a hospital bed with tubes everywhere, smiling with her nurses and doctors just because they indulged her and allowed a photo to be taken. I have a photo of her eating a chocolate glazed donut with her granddaughter in a hospital bed and she is smiling from ear to ear. There are pictures of her baking cookies with her great grandson and even though she was almost blind, she still slowly mixed her ingredients and helped him drop them onto the pan, laughing when she missed the pan and the dough hit the floor. My mother celebrated everything. If it was cold and windy, she sighed that it just made the hot coffee feel, taste and smell better. She loved a good patty melt sandwich whether it came from a truck stop, family diner, or a national chain. What made it good? The bread was grilled with real butter but not too much; the bread was crisp, not greasy; the onions were caramelized but not mushy and the swiss cheese was very well melted and the burger was juicy. She would wipe her mouth and her eyes would sparkle and she would say “Now that is a good patty melt. Only thing it needs is a crisp fry,” and she would pop a golden french fry in her mouth and sip her rootbeer, wink, and laugh at herself. My wife and I were talking just a week ago about

how much we loved doing the most mundane things together. We wished there was more time to just be together doing the little things, weeding the garden, changing the fluorescent bulb above the laundry, cleaning out the storage area in our basement just sweeping the sidewalk and then sitting on the patio watching the dog play fetch. The small things seem so sweet, ordinary, and so very precious, and somehow, so essential I guess that is part of what made my mother so magical-the small things were not small; they were THE things; they were everything.
matter. I want to see each experience and moment as a celebration and a gift. I know each moment IS a gift now it is time to live it. What seeds will I plant? With a little helping of Beanie magic… seeds of joy..
As I think about this season of rebirth, and I ask myself what seeds will I plant in my own life, I just want to try and make the apparently mundane

Family Vacation Time
by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger
Every year most of us think about going on a vacation with our family members. In 2020 that was a staycation for most of us due to COVID-19. This year, however, with COVID-19 vaccines becoming more available, the possibility of travel may be tempting you once again to GO SOMEWHERE with your family on vacation – with plenty of masks and sanitary wipes of course! If you have family pets, particularly cats and dogs, the question of whether or not to include them in your trip may arise. If you are considering that question, then there are some things to consider. The obvious first step is to see if where you are going will allow you to bring your pets. No brainer, right? Not exactly. Some places may allow you to bring the pet(s) with you, but not allow you to leave them unattended in your room. Some may not have

places for you to walk your dog (or cat) where they can actually relax and relieve themselves. These are the obvious things to check out, right? I would suggest that you take a step back and consider the answer to these questions before you decide whether or not to take you pet(s) with you. • Does your pet like to ride in the car, or do they get stressed and cry/bark/meow constantly? If you are driving somewhere this could be an issue. Note that if you travel by air, your pet may have to be crated and put in the luggage area of the plane for the flight. Some airlines will allow small dogs and cats in the cabin if they fit in a crate under the seat. • Does your pet like to meet new people, or are

they shy/introverted/nervous when strangers are around? If you are going to visit family that the pet knows, then it’s probably not an issue. • Are there other pets where you are going? If so, do they get along with your pets or will your pets need to be confined away from them for long periods of time? • Finally, is what you are doing on your vacation – hiking, visiting national parks (some do not allow pets BTW), going to include your pets, or will they need to be confined somewhere when you are out having fun? • If you are thinking of traveling with your pet(s) in the car, make sure you take a couple of test drives with them to make sure they can relax and enjoy the car ride. Be sure dogs are trained to wait until their leash is on before leaving the car. We also suggest you crate a cat you are traveling in the car. • If you have to take a trip and bring your pet with you (moving to a new city, etc), your vet can offer medication to help them on the trip if they are nervous in the car. These concerns are probably obvious to you. If you can safely take your pet(s) with you, bring a couple of gallons of the water they drink at home, as well as plenty of food and treats that they are accustomed to. You may want to check with your vet to get a recommendation for a vet in the area you are traveling to in case your pet needs medical care. Traveling with pets can be fun and add a lot to your trip if you prepare them and yourself for it. What if you are unable to take your pet(s) with you on vacation? Here are a few suggestions for helping your pets get through a long week without their people: • If you are able to find someone you trust to stay in your home with your pets while you are gone, that

is probably the best thing for them. The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters can be a good place to start. You can also ask at your local vet’s office – we have found all our house sitters that way, and it has worked out great for us. If you live in a neighborhood, your neighborhood online group/Facebook page may have listings of local people who do pet sitting. You can also tap relatives and friends for help and recommendations. • If you cannot find someone to stay in your home while you are gone, then you have 2 options – board your pets, or find someone to come in at least 3 times a day to feed, check water, and let dogs out. That person should also spend at least 15 minutes petting and paying attention to the animals. If you choose the latter and you have dogs, we suggest that you not be gone longer than a week. • You can find reputable boarding facilities in your area that will accept dogs and cats. Be sure you tour them and are comfortable leaving your pets there. Dogs should have plenty of time outside their run every day to socialize and exercise. Cats should be played with as well. Plan ahead for your vacation so that you AND your pets will have a great time!

To see the earth as it is now... The sun shines by day, and the moon glows by night. Nothing has changed. A healing humanity exists only if we hold the earth in the palm of our hands and nurture it. Care for it as if it were your newborn child. It is in all that we cherish that we plant the seed with forgiveness, surrender and love. The promise for a brighter tomorrow is possible, with a tiny drop of water, symbolizing our faith. It will take all of the streams to meet the rivers to guide us to all of the oceans. Faith will move mountains, and the oceans of faith will heal all of humanity.
