There are many ways everyone can prevent heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer for women. The symptoms of heart disease can be very different from the usual signs of a possible heart attack that men can experience. Many women are so busy in their roles of taking care of their families, a busy career, juggling all that they do on a daily basis, they can completely miss the possible symptoms. Prevention is the key. Caring for yourself and changing just a few things in your lifestyle can make a significant difference. Eating healthy, adding strawberries and blueberries to your diet is a great way to ward off heart disease. Making sure you eat a balanced nutritious diet is essential. Getting enough exercise creates a great defense to fight against heart disease. Choose something you love to do instead of dreading a daily routine of exercise, it can be as simple as taking a nature walk, make it a habit. Even the most fit, marathon runners are not immune to heart disease. Family history can play a part in whether it is possible for you to be at risk. It is possible that women can have real symptoms of heart problems and not realize it and may believe it is caused by something else. In reality, nausea/vomiting, shortness of breath, dizziness, lower chest pain, back and jaw pain are just a few symptoms that women suffering a possible heart attack can experience. Listen to your body and pay attention, it is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and your family. Wear red and initiate “Go Red for Women,” awareness everywhere! Through education and learning we can all live healthier lives. For more information, visit goredforwomen.org.

son, Ari, and his husband, David, moved from Texas to Santa Fe. My sisters, Lyn, Brandi, and I planned this sisters weekend before anyone even knew they’d be moving there. It had been years since we last gathered for a sisters’ trip. Getting together was long overdue. Flying in from Texas, South Dakota and Oregon we coordinated our flights into Albuquerque, rented a car and were off. Our home was an adorable and spacious Airbnb in the Railyard district. Our host had a bottle of wine waiting on us. The neighborhood has restaurants, shops and a farmers market all in walking distance. Reservations on our first night were at The Shed, a dining institution since 1953, located on Palace Avenue, just east of the Santa Fe Plaza. Between the three of us, we sampled fish tacos, green chile stew and blue corn burritos. It was a great way to begin our weekend. Saturday morning, we visited the Santa Fe Farmers Market. It’s overflowing with vegetables, fruits, spices

and fresh flowers. We walked away with local baked goods and raspberry chili jam. Grab a cup of piñon coffee and check out the venders with local art, jewelry and soaps. Later that afternoon we ventured to the Santa Fe Flea Market at Buffalo Thunder, located about ten miles north of town. This is a must. Located in the flea market is a little stand where you can try homemade cactus lemonade and one of their signature tacos. There is beautiful native jewelry and art on display and for sale at reasonable prices. All three of us left with fabulous treasures. In the evening, we met up with Ari and David for dinner at one of my favorite restaurants, Tomasita’s. Tomasita’s is famous for their red and green chile, sopaipillas and tasty margaritas! All of which we enjoyed. After dinner, we went back to the house and got in our pajamas to enjoy an evening of catching up and girl talk. Our plans for the next few days included shopping at the Plaza, seeing a movie at the Santa Fe Film festival and visiting the ancient cave dwellings at Bandelier National Monument. Oh, and, of course, eating more fabulous Santa Fe cuisine. We were excited to be visiting Santa Fe’s 11th Annual Independent Film Festival. It may be obvious we are sisters, because all three of us chose the same film to see - based on not knowing anything about the film or that the festival was even going on during our stay. We were pleasantly surprised that the film we chose, “Falls Around Her,” would not only be a wonderful movie, but the star, Tantoo Cardinal was in the audience that evening to receive the Lifetime Achievement award and introduce her film. It was an honor and a blessing to be in the audience that evening. I still get chills remembering it. This is definitely a film worth viewing. The event was held at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on the Plaza, in downtown Santa Fe. The day trip to Bandelier National Monument was a spectacular experience. The drive to Bandelier from Santa Fe is about 90 minutes. It’s a unique opportunity to experience Native American cliff dwellings and learn about the agricultural community that existed hundred of years ago. The Ancestral Pueblo people occupied the area from approximately 1150-1550 CE. They built homes carved from volcanic tuff and planted crops in the mesa top fields.

We hiked the main loop trail which provided a fabulous view of the ruins. Lyn and Brandi hiked up into the cave dwellings. You can actually go inside some of the larger ones. I, however, sat that part out. It was fun watching them as “dots” climbing up into the caves. The wildflowers and scenery were fantastic. Taking advantage of the homelike energy of the Airbnb, we spent a great deal of our time together hanging out around the outdoor fire pit with a glass of wine and sharing sister secrets. I am blessed to have been able to share the time with my sisters in one of my favorite places. 2019 gifted me with three different trips to Santa Fe and all three were so different from each other. Since then, my son, Ari, and son-in-law, David, moved to Southern California. Ray and I took a two week RV trip to see them and enjoy the country. I will be sharing that adventure with you all soon. My Zen moment of this trip was time spent at Bandelier National Monument. It felt like being transported back in time. It was a mystical experience. I will treasure that for the rest of my life. As always, I send you blessings, and am in gratitude to share my journeys with you! Until next time, Sage Sage Woman About the Author: Sage Woman is an Intuitive and Spiritual Life Coach. Songs from Heaven It was early Spring, everyone was looking forward to warmer temps as the past winter was colder than usual. I received a call from the sister of my long, lost love from many years ago. I was alarmed because we had lost touch over the years and was not sure why she was calling. It was bad news, I felt my heart fill with sorrow as she told me that the man of whom I had loved so much and never really stopped loving him was very ill with cancer. He was in the hospital, I was struggling with a terrible bout of bronchitis, so I could not go and see him. I did not think my heart could handle seeing him so ill, I felt guilty about that but knew I could not put his health at more risk if I was contagious as well. I spoke to him on the phone, the weakness in his voice made me feel sad, all the memories of our life together came flooding back to me. We loved music and he use to sing to me and we loved dancing to our favorite songs at the local club where they would play live music. We stayed friends for a long time after we split up, it seemed it just was not the right timing for us to

be together, it was complicated, but I always felt that he was my soul mate. I eventually met someone else and lost touch with him, he would call my Mom sometimes to see how we were all doing, he was just so thoughtful and kind and wanted to let us know he was thinking of us. He did not stay around, he did not linger. He told me on the phone that he could not tolerate the chemo, I told him I understood how horrible the treatments must have been for him. When I said good bye to him on the phone, I felt a sinking feeling it would be the last time we spoke. He passed within days after our last phone call. The pain and sorrow was deep and I kept thinking about the memories, like most people do after they lose a loved one, remembering all the good times we shared. After the memorial that his family had for him, I found an old photo of him standing with my Mom in her kitchen one Christmas. I placed it on my hutch and it gave me comfort. One ordinary day I was standing in my kitchen cooking for my family, I started singing a song over and over. I did not notice what I was even doing at first. I felt a strong feeling come over me to stop and go to my laptop and play the song as I was struggling trying to remember the lyrics to the song and felt compelled to sing it. As I sat down and listened to the song it hit me, it was one of my boyfriends favorite songs. I knew he was contacting me through the song. I felt comforted and was overjoyed that he was letting me know he was around me. Some skeptics may doubt that someone who has passed over to the other side can not do this, I say yes! It can be done and I was so happy that he finally found a way that I would know it was him for sure. After that he kept on sending more of our favorite songs that we both loved, it was uplifting and I am grateful that love keeps us connected. We can still feel the love from our loved ones that have passed if we stay tuned in.
Spring Preview 2021
The first song he sent to me, which was one of his favorites to sing to was “Guitar Man,” by Bread. Some of the lyrics below were especially touching to me and my memories will never fade of the wonderful love we shared so many years ago.
to realize the battle that is raging between darkness and light. Now is the time for all souls to answer the call of our Creator to stand up for the light and to claim victory. For it is the righteous that will claim this victory and progress the soul evolution.
“Then the lights begin to flicker, and the sound is getting dim, the voice begins to falter, and the crowds are getting thin. But he never seems to notice, he’s just got to find another place to play.” “Either way, got to play.” –J.P.
Know this evolution is required before Beloved Earth and the righteous can ascend. God is calling his people with the call of love to be ready for the time to move with Earth to the new dimension. As from the beginning of Earth’s creation, we have been given choices, freedom of choice. We ask, “What is your choice?” Soul evolution to a world of peace and love or another 26,000 years of death and birth?
Evolution of the Soul by Angela Angel to Rev. Marcia Cantrell
We are entering a new phase in the evolution of mankind. You might call this evolution an evolution of Spirit. Since the beginning of time man has been in evolution. However the evolution I am speaking of now is the evolution of the Soul. Throughout the beginning the soul has seeked growth and knowledge. There have always been those who have been able to progress their souls’ evolution through maintaining God’s word, as later was taught by his son and before who received knowledge by God. We must first come to realize this evolution of the soul has taken a side trip as forces of darkness have been able to infiltrate this wondrous world so drastically the soul has been in darkness by so many that it has created less light for many. One would think this is normal as it has gone on for so long. My Brothers and Sisters now is the time for what has been called the Great Awakening. For it is this great awakening of those souls who have been sleeping.

LAchieving ove and Relationships – a Spiritual Balance by Cynthia White Flower
8
“There is only one happiness in this life, to love and be loved,” wrote 19th Century novelist, George Sand. Nothing gives our lives more meaning than loving and being loved. Our relationships are the arena where our love plays out. Our relationships spiral us into new heights of awareness. They show us parts of who we are and help us to define personally - what makes our lives worth living. Our relationships are also our mirrors. They confirm what we are giving out in life by demonstrating what we are drawing back to ourselves. Love is the glue that holds our relationships together. It is the link that connects us. Love is our reason for living.
our foundation for love. Some say that we take our whole lifetime overcoming our up-bringing. While it definitely influences us, it does not have to define us. We have the free will to make choices that bring us happiness. Choosing to love, and deeply, purely, honestly, with integrity – moves us into higher states of awareness, fulfillment and fills us with the sense of belonging. When we feel deeply loved, we feel secure and strong. Love is our mirror. We can see ourselves through the eyes of love. Love is the vehicle that drives us! Paramahansa Yogananda said “In the state of love, no matter what you do, it’s going to be good.”
Experiencing love is the most fulfilling feeling in the world. Love transports us. Taoist Master, Lao Tzu tells us that “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” As we love, we grow. We develop who we are based upon the love in our relationships. How we grew up shaped
How wide our door is open for us to love and to be loved determines the levels and magnitude of our love – that which we give, and that which we receive. How high can we take our love? There are layers to work through and layers to achieve. We relate to the world as we see it. We look through our own unique eyes. We
Spring Preview 2021
bring all of who we are in that moment in time into our relationships. We also bring all that we are over coming, as well as ideas and feelings for where we want to be. We are taught that, with love, comes expectation – preconceived ideas. The other side of that coin is unconditional love. To love one where he or she iswithout imposing who we think he or she is or what we think he or she should be doing, but actually accepting who we see - is a big step towards The Divine and unconditional love. We all have our stories of how we arrived where we are. Removing the word “should” from our vocabulary is a step towards our own freedom. It takes away some judgment and limitations. Love at any level is a gift from The Divine. To love unconditionally is to understand, opening our hearts to compassion. Achieving a spiritual balance within ourselves can help us to open our door wider to unconditional love. We do have a relationship with ourselves, so this is a good place to begin. Canadian American actress, Jenn Proske recommends, “Love yourself. It is important to stay positive because beauty comes from the inside out.” To live in gratitude allows us to be more positive daily. To say “Thank You” for all of our blessings allows more to enter. Beauty is an attribute of love - the reflection of all Creation in All That Is. To love ourselves is to feel the beauty of life within. To give back to ourselves provides more for us to give to others. Self reflection is necessary. Ask yourself, “How do I feel? How do I want to feel?” Paramahansa Yogananda says that the key to spiritual balance in love and relationships is meditation. He passionately asserts: “The greatest romance you can have is the romance with God… The greatest love you can experience is in communion with God in meditation. The love between the soul and Spirit is the perfect love, the love you are all seeking. When you meditate, love grows. Millions of thrills pass through your heart....If you meditate deeply, a love will come over you such as no human tongue can describe; you will know God’s divine love, and you will be able to give that pure love to others.” Meditation helps us to become calm, to feel peace and to rebalance ourselves. Through meditation, we learn to quiet our argumentative thoughts and slow down our active body to allow ourselves to focus beyond the physical and mental limitations that surround us. We open the
Infinity
doors to The Divine that is available to us from within. Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi explains further, “Love said to me, there is nothing that is not me. Be silent.” Spiritual balance surrounds us. We have only to quiet ourselves to feel it. We can sit in the sun and feel its warmth, because warmth is a manifestation of love. We can hear music inside the sounds of a bubbling brook, serenading us to be calm. We can look into the eyes of a child, and know that we are looking into the eyes of love. We can listen to the leaves of the trees as they rustle in the breezes, sharing their tranquility. We can look into the center of a flower and see it rejoicing as it shares its beauty with us. We can look into the eyes of a fellow human being and know that we are also looking into the eyes of God. The Delphi Oracle says: “Heed these words…If you do not find within yourself that which you seek, neither will you find it outside. In you is hidden the treasure of treasures. Know Thyself and you will know the Universe and the Gods.” “Love calls - everywhere and always. We’re sky bound. Are you coming?” - Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi

BTestimonial aker Chiropractic more permanent PE tube placement, and to repair to my deviated septum. I would not recommend sinus surgery to anyone! It was extremely painful and took almost a month to recover from. About a month after surgery, the ENT figured out why I was taking so long to recovery! I developed Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). My follow up CAT scan showed that the sinus surgery was not successful. Due to the infection, more scar tissue had formed in my nose and sinuses. His recommendation? Let’s do the surgery again! I told him that I needed time to consider my options. Valerie Hobbs and Dr. Patrick Baker “Early one morning, I sent a message to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness. By 4:00 pm that same afternoon I started on my road to recovery. Over 10 years ago, I began having chronic ear and sinus infections. I have 2 older sisters and they both began having ear infections around the same age. They both had PE tubes placed and never had issues with ear infections again. My primary care doctor treated the infections for a while and then recommended that I see an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist. The first ENT told me that adults don’t get chronic ear infections. Basically, he totally blew me off. No treatment was provided! I found another ENT and was taken seriously. Unfortunately, his interventions did not lead to success. He recommended PE tubes and they worked for about 6 months. Even with the tubes, I had 2 additional ear infections. The last ear infection resulted in the tubes being displaced. The ENT allowed my ears to “heal” and started me on an allergy medication. He also recommended that I see an allergist. I began a long road of twice a week allergy injections. The only thing that I received from the allergy injections was that I no longer have a fear of needles! Next, the ENT recommended sinus surgery for new,

About 2 months later, I woke up in excruciating pain. I called my ENT and was informed that he was no longer in practice. I called my PCP and she was able to find me another ENT. The PE tubes, placed two months prior, were no longer in the place. He removed the tubes from the ear canal and told me to see him in 3 months. My PCP finally decided that I should see a SINUS guy! I was thrilled that I would finally get relief from chronic pain and pressure. I had another CAT scan done. All my hopes were short lived. The ENT looked at my CAT scan and said that “if I was looking for surgery then I came to the wrong doctor.” Surgery was the last thing on my mind. But to get relief, I would have gladly had another surgery! The doctor then recommended that I take allegra and a saline spray daily. He assured me that this would relieve all my symptoms! A year later, he was dead wrong! In this past year alone, I have seen a doctor over 20 times! All visits were for my ears or sinuses. Even after all those visits, I still had chronic sinus pain and pressure. That pressure led to multiple ear infections in the past year. After too many sleepless nights, I searched and found Baker Chiropractic and Wellness and submitted an appointment request at 4:00 am. I received a response from Danielle by 8:00 am with an appointment that same day. I was impressed from the moment I walked in the door. Everyone was

was overwhelmed by the support I received from Baker Chiropractic. From a thoughtful touch to a sympathy card, Baker Chiropractic went above and beyond to share my loss. I have never had a doctor that knows so much about me and truly cares!
My x-rays showed some low back degeneration. I am a nurse and have assumed that back pain was part of the job! I am thrilled to say it is no longer part of the job! Dr. Patrick Baker is heaven sent! He provided me with a thorough understanding of the purpose of chiropractic care and what my x-rays showed.

Sfrom oul Mates the Edgar Cayce Readings Almost every person feels a longing for companionship. While a number of psychic sources and metaphysical teachings have proposed the concept of “soul mate,” the psychic readings of Edgar Cayce provide a unique perspective on this topic. According to Cayce, our souls have chosen to enter into the earth for the purpose of soul growth. Because of reincarnation, our souls have been in the earth many times and have experienced close personal relationships with other souls. These past interactions cause us to love one person and despise another; to feel wonderful vibrations with a particular individual in one aspect of our lives only to feel uncomfortable with that same person in another aspect. Because we travel in “Soul Groups,” everyone involved in our present lives has also been in many
12
of our past lives. Our parents, brothers and sisters, spouses, children, friends, colleagues, bosses and employees, and even our enemies began sharing life with us long before the present lifetime. What is more, associations with some individuals are more conducive to growth than associations with others; therefore, it is prudent to choose carefully our companions. This principle is probably easy for us to accept if we merely reflect on the types of influence various friends and acquaintances have had on us in the past. The readings suggest that the soul itself does not have gender. Because the physical domain is characterized by polarities such as light/dark or positive/negative, in order to learn and grow, a soul chooses to incarnate in a male or female expression. Likely, in the long-range growth of the
Spring Preview 2021
soul over many incarnations, both male and female experiences are needed. When relationships are viewed with a past-life perspective, the undercurrents of behaviors, attitudes, and emotions in relationships are evident. Patterns and habits have formed deep within our inner-consciousness and shape the way we interact with people around us. Because we have free will, “karma” from our past-lives may be reflected in our current circumstances and shape our innate reactions and feelings, providing opportunities for soul growth. Attraction to another person and even thoughts of marriage may be related to memory patterns (even subconscious memories) of having been with that soul in the distant past. The condition is usually created in which our soul needs or desires a marriage companion as a balance or complement. This is not to say that important spiritual growth is impossible during a life without marriage; rather, the marriage relationship is one great avenue for development. A “soul mate” is really nothing more than a soul or souls (and there may be several of them) with whom we have closely shared so many lifetimes that we now resonate to the same pitch. There is an acquired understanding that gives soul mates the capacity to help each other in ways that would be difficult without the deep bonding that has occurred through the ages. They are usually more like complements one to another than duplicates of each other, each one bringing to the relationship something the other is missing, thereby rounding-out the relationship and giving each of them more than they would have separately.
But even if we find someone who fits these criteria— someone who is perhaps a soul mate—this does not guarantee a good marriage. The two will still have to work together in order for the great potential of the relationship to flower. There is a strong tendency to think of soul mates only in the sense of lovers, but they can also be partners, parents, siblings, or friends. Having been lovers and mates in many past lives, it may be hard to avoid a romantic interlude in the present life—there may simply be too much magnetism and physical attraction. Destiny and fate exist side by side with free will. The effects of our past actions have an inertia that carries over into the present life and shapes it, thereby creating our destiny. However, nothing surpasses the power of the soul’s divinely-given free will. As spiritual beings, the true mate of every soul is its Original Companion, the Creator, who gave each soul life for the very purpose of being eternal companions with Him/Her. As souls, we are actually siblings in the Universal Family in the spiritual realms.

A 58 year-old woman asked Edgar Cayce to explain what was meant by “soul-mate” in relation to her own spiritual development. The response was. “Those…where there is the answering of one to another; as would be the tongue to the groove… or in any such where they are a complement… Not that as from physical attraction, but from the mental and spiritual help.” (Reading 1556-2)

R esonance and Entrainment by Jill Mattson
Two phenomena that demonstrate how listening to specific sounds can deeply affect us are Entrainment and Resonance.
included is Uracil (for RNA), ATP, frequencies of the elements Phosphorus, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Carbon, and Nitrogen. ATP stores chemical energy for the cell. The elements form the DNA building blocks, RNA and the phosphate backbone of DNA
Entrainment and resonance are interactions of frequencies with other bodies. We understand these well on the macro scale. However, many Sound Healing researchers believe that these phenomena also operate at microscopic levels and can explain some of the powerful results that are seen when Sound frequencies are directed to living organisms.
A DNA molecule is a collection of recipes for making proteins. Since proteins are the machinery of life, DNA is the recipe for making an organism. What is the function of RNA? RNA builds the proteins based on the formula in the DNA.
Resonance and entrainment produced by Sound Frequencies are similar but distinct phenomena. An illustration of resonance can be demonstrated with a pair of violins or two tuning forks of the same frequency. In the case of the violins, position them nearby. Then pluck the A string at 440 Hz. on the first violin. The matching A string on the nearby violin will resonate - without any other action. The near violin’s A string’s fundamental frequency matches the fundamental frequency of the plucked A string. The sound vibrations from the activated violin travel through the air and are absorbed by the second violin’s A string. Because they share the same fundamental frequency, the second string resonates, and the intensity of the vibration builds (due to resonance); consequently, you can hear the second violin “play” the same note as the first. If you remove the A string from the second violin (to eliminate interference) and strike the first violin’s A string again, you will cause the E string (330 Hz.) on #2 violin to resonance. This is because the A 440 Hz. string shares an overtone of 1320 Hz. with the E 330 Hz. string. That is, the 3rd harmonic of A = 440 is 3 * 440 = 1320 Hz and the 4th harmonic of E = 330 is 4 * 330 = 1320 Hz. This is a simplified version of how “playing” appropriate frequencies of Sound near us can resonate structures inside our body. Jill Mattson has identified and extracted the precise frequencies of critical components of our DNA blueprint. Her new audio creations contain the sound frequencies of the four building blocks of our DNA: Adenine, Thymine, Cytosine, Guanine; also
14
These musical compositions contain audio with Fibonacci sounds spirals that mirror the double helix geometry of DNA. The Fibonacci sequences take the listener upward and resonate along the deepest pathways of our energetic scaffolds. There are sounds taken from the backbone of the complex DNA molecule, strengthening and infusing our chromosomes’ very structure. The crucial link between “DNA Sounds” work and Subtle Energy is that Subtle Energy can be molded and carried on some Sound Energies - special vibrational frequencies. Further, Subtle Energy can interact with material things (such as Human DNA) and other forms of energy ... but it must be made available - such as in the music collection called DNA Dreams. When you are completely enshrouded in pure DNA components’ vibrations, the matching DNA compounds in your body will vibrate in resonance. Every matching DNA molecule in your being will softly oscillate in resonance with the DNA frequencies embedded in Mattson’s DNA Dreams music. Think of it like this: your personal DNA is vibrating in precisely the same frequencies as the pristine/perfect DNA energies in Mattson’s compositions. Any compromised DNA bases due to mutations or corrupted reproduction will NOT match the frequencies present in DNA Dreams. Your body will bathe in only healthy natural energies. Any rogue cells will not participate. Entrainment and Beat Induction are processes where a beat or a rhythm from a source can induce the same beat or rhythm in a second body. The first example

that I learned - when studying Entrainment - was the case of a roomful of clocks. In a room with multiple mechanical clocks (clocks with a pendulum), a dominant clock (such as a large Grandfather clock) will entrain the periods of all the other clocks nearby. Eventually, all of the clocks will be beating in time (in-phase) - their pendulums will sway together. The master clock has entrained its beating with all of the other clocks present. Other examples are synchronization (for example, foot-tapping) of organisms to an external beat or rhythm. Wikipedia defines Beat Induction as the process in which a regular pulse is activated in a music listener, causing foot tapping in rhythm to the external rhythm. We have all experienced involuntary foot tapping when the right musical stimulus is presented. “Joseph Jordania recently suggested that the forces of natural selection developed the human ability to be entrained. This was an important part of achieving a specific altered state of consciousness - battle trance. [2] Achieving this state, in which humans lose their individuality, do not feel fear and pain, are united in a shared collective identity, and act in the best interests of the group, was crucial for the physical survival of our ancestors.”i There has been a tremendous amount of fascinating work done using Sound Frequencies with living organisms to wondrous ends. Resonance and entrainment take the musical energy and transfer it to our bodies. DNA Music with embedded frequencies is yet another example of Sound Energy being utilized as a powerful tool to benefit living systems. ________ Wikipedia: (Evolutionary function of entrainment in humans)

Discover the Amazing
Benefits of Pistachios
Pistachios, the little greenish/purple gems wrapped in a shell are actually a healthy snack food and loaded with nutrients. Rich in fiber, antioxidants and protein make them an excellent choice to add to a daily diet. A low calorie nut, pistachios can be used in various dishes as well from sweet to savory.
16
pistachios contain 6 grams of protein per 1 ounce serving, it is a great source of food and easy way to keep energy levels steady throughout the day. The fiber in pistachios is healthy for digestion and can increase the good bacteria in the gut and has been shown in studies to be more beneficial than consuming almonds.
This little nut actually has higher levels of antioxidants that can help prevent cancer and other diseases than other varieties of nuts. A study found that roasting them did not affect the healthy benefits, however it is important to note your intake of sodium that they may be seasoned with.
These healthy nuts are rich in lutein and zeaxanthin which are important for eye health, preventing eye cancers and help slow age related degeneration and cataracts. This tasty nut may contribute to glowing and healthier looking skin.
Pistachios contain a low glycemic index, they can help to balance blood sugar, and give an extra boost of energy. More studies are being done and results have shown that consuming these nuts may reduce cholesterol levels and high blood pressure.
A closed shell of a pistachio usually means it is not fully ripe yet. Pistachios that are ripe have an open shell and are easier to enjoy. It is better to buy these nuts in their shells because they will stay fresh longer.
If one would like to add more protein to their diet,
For maximum freshness, store pistachios in an air tight

ADrawing rtist of Life, from Within by Patti Lightflower “And the seasons, they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We’re captive on the carousel of time We can’t return, we can only look Behind, from where we came And go round and round and round, in the circle game.” ~from The Circle Game by Joni Mitchell Feeling restless, lethargic and a little irritable of late? You are not alone. People around the world adapting to various stay at home restrictions, due to the virus making its rounds, are also experiencing the mental, emotional and physical symptoms of Cabin Fever and Stir Crazy. Being somewhat of an introvert with lots of books and craft supplies I was at first a little elated with the chance to spend time alone, eat and sleep as I pleased and not worry about having to make myself or my space presentable while creative projects dominated flat surfaces wherever found. But as the weeks have turned to months and now a whole year these activities have less of a shiny object appeal, and it is an effort to start or finish something. So, I investigated what it means to have Cabin Fever and feel Stir Crazy. Professionals seem to agree that these are not real illnesses but behaviors and moods as a result of long-term confinement. Stir actually originated as a nickname for prison in the 1800’s in London. The term Cabin Fever originated during the same century in the US with pioneers spending long periods of time stuck in a cabin mostly alone or with a few family members.
the soul needs a jump start. An opportunity arrived with a request to make a mandala and as the ideas rolled around in my mind, I found myself choosing between a traditional round mandala, a sea turtle which is a mascot for this magazine, or a lotus flower. Each was fitting. The circle representing the cycles repeating, the sea turtle teaching us patience and to enjoy the journey, and the lotus which rises from mud with its blossom opening to display delicate pure petals. As you can see, I decided upon the sea turtle. Sea turtle teaches us many of the things that are helpful to manage our Cabin Fever and Stir Crazy symptoms such as patience, enjoying the journey, and persistence. Stitching with a variety of threads I have collected over the years, I realized some of the silk threads were around a hundred years old. I wondered if this piece I make will survive time and be in someone’s collection a century from now. I like that other’s women’s thread collections have been added to mine and I will cycle them and mine forward. It is a circle game. Below are a few suggestions to overcome the effects of long-term solitude and confinement.
Now a couple hundred years later we are giving these phrases whole new meaning and adding to their history. Thankfully, there are remedies and help available. There is a cure for it.
1) Try to stick to a routine so that time doesn’t become a blur. Schedule activities on your calendar that you would like to work on. Make lists of things you would like to get done.
The hardest part of just about everything is just getting started, taking that first step. Sometimes
2) Make sure you eat nourishing meals and avoid nibbling all day and night on snacks. It is easy to think

we are hungry when we are just bored. If nibbling is your style, then be sure to have healthy choices. 3) Exercise is so important. One, for keeping us fit and flexible, but also our lymphatic system moves when we do. It helps move toxins from our bodies. 4) If the walls feel like they are closing in, you could: “Draw a window on the wall to remind you of the sun. To remind you of the rain that taps. To remind you of the sunset that makes you smile. To remind you of the moonlight that sneaks in your room. To remind you of the snow that covers the world.” (from “A Room Without a Window” by Yoko Ono) You could also add artwork that gives you the feeling of open space. Craft shops have small window frames to paint your own scenery if you do not want to paint a window on the wall. 5) Strive to be patient and compassionate. Put yourself in others shoes when you are wanting to release some of that pent up steam and pressure. As much as I now cringe hearing people say….” we’re all in this together”, we are. Be kind, to others and to yourself.

Ethrough xperience Spring the Eyes of a Child! by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE
Theme: Refresh and renew the many facets of your life with the season of Spring! Celebrate new beginnings and energies in the spirit of light and harmony! As Spring arrives, we often feel grateful to see signs of new life and new beginnings, as Mother Nature brings new light and energy for new growth. Whether it’s a crocus popping through the snow, buds sprouting from the trees, longer days, or warmer weather, we notice these changes and appreciate their return after Winter. One facet of life that is constantly celebrating new beginnings and is full of energy to grow are children. Whether you are a parent or simply observe children, one of the most enjoyable present-moment activities you can do it so experience life through the eyes of a child and notice how it can positively change you.
20
As adults, we rather often assume that is up to us to teach children about life. In reality, children can teach adults a lot about life that we don’t know or have forgotten. For example, have you ever seen a child see or do something for the first time? Like feel grass between toes … see an airplane … taste ice cream … smile or respond to laughter? Seeing their amazement can remind you that the things you see all the time, every day, can be experienced, enjoyed and appreciated like they are new, every day. Children are so present moment, they usually don’t dwell on the past or worry about the future. How often do adults do that? It might take more conscious intention and thought for adults to be present moment, but what inner peace and harmony it can bring us!
Spring Preview 2021
Children observe the world around them, noticing little details most adults overlook. How many times have you been so caught up in whatever you are doing or whatever your mind is thinking about that you are oblivious to where your body was or is experiencing. There are miracles happening all around us, but because we’ve seen them before, we forget what miracles they still are! Children know how to play, which is something many adults have forgotten to do. Children sing whether anyone is listening and dance even when others are watching. They just flow with the rhythm, not caring about what other people think. How freeing would that be?

Children often speak what they are thinking, with total honesty, not knowing how to lie or be fake. They have little self-consciousness and are totally authentic. Aside from having a polite-manners filter, which is important, wouldn’t it be great to feel free enough to be authentic and real all the time, without worrying about being judged or criticized? You can probably think of even more ways children teach us adults how to live more fully. So as you notice the signs of Spring this year, pay attention, with gratitude, to the signs of life, love, joy and harmony all around you. In addition to noticing new beginnings, how about noticing and showing gratitude for the people, places, events, and things that are constants in your life. Imagine they were suddenly gone and you can re-connect with your appreciation for their presence and how they enrich your life every day.

Which Foods Are Best for Your Heart? by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Your diet is an important, if not crucial, factor for the maintenance of a healthy heart well into old age. Healthy dietary fats top the list of heart-healthy foods, of course, but aside from that, a nitrate-rich diet can go a long way toward protecting your heart. Nitrates should not be confused with nitrites, found in bacon, hot dogs, ham and other less-than-healthy cured meats. Nitrites can convert into potentially dangerous nitrosamines, especially if heated, which is why processed meats are best avoided. In fact, after examining over 7,000 clinical studies, the World Cancer Research Fund concluded there’s no safe lower limit for processed meats.1 They should be avoided altogether. On the other hand, many vegetables contain naturally occurring nitrates. When consumed, the bacteria in your mouth convert these nitrates to nitrites, but since vegetables are also rich in antioxidants, these nitrites do not pose a health hazard. More importantly, your body transforms the nitrates in vegetables into nitric oxide (NO),2 a soluble gas continually produced from the amino acid L-arginine inside your cells. Nitrate-Rich Foods Boost Nitric Oxide Production NO is a gas and free radical that is an important biological signaling molecule that supports normal endothelial function and protects the little powerhouses inside your cells, your mitochondria. Acting as a potent vasodilator, NO also helps relax and widen the diameter of your blood vessels, allowing a greater volume of blood to flow through. Healthy blood flow helps your body function at its best, as your blood carries oxygen and nutrients to your heart, brain and other organs. It nourishes and oxygenizes your immune system and muscles, and helps keep your heart beating. It also carries away waste material and carbon dioxide. As noted in research3 presented by Dr. Michael Greger above, a diet high in nitrate is a natural strategy recommended for the treatment of prehypertension and hypertension (high blood pressure), “and to protect individuals at risk of adverse vascular events,” i.e., heart attacks. Indeed, raw beets — which are high in nitrates — have been shown to lower blood pressure by an average of four to five points within a matter of hours.4 Some studies have shown a glass of beet juice can lower systolic blood pressure by more than eight points5 — far more than most blood pressure medications. In conventional medicine, nitrates are used to treat angina
22
and congestive heart failure, and research shows a glass of beetroot juice has the same effect as prescription nitrates.6 NO Promotes Healthy Heart and Brain Function In one recent study,7,8,9,10 patients diagnosed with high blood pressure who drank beet juice an hour before exercise, three times a week for six weeks, experienced increased tissue oxygenation and blood flow. It also improved brain neuroplasticity by improving oxygenation of the somatomotor cortex (a brain area that is often affected in the early stages of dementia). As noted by study co-author W. Jack Rejeski, a health and exercise science professor at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, NO is a vital biomolecule that “goes to the areas of the body which are hypoxic, or needing oxygen, and the brain is a heavy feeder of oxygen in your body.”11,12 Your heart, too, requires NO and oxygen for optimal function. As noted by cardiologist Dr. Stephen Sinatra:13 “Adequate NO production is the first step in a chain reaction that promotes healthy cardiovascular function, while insufficient NO triggers a cascade of destruction that eventually results in heart disease… NO promotes healthy dilation of the veins and arteries so blood can move throughout your body. Plus, it prevents red blood cells from sticking together to create dangerous clots and blockages.” Which Foods Contain the Most Nitrates? As noted by Greger in the featured video, leafy greens top the list of nitrate-rich foods. Beets, which are a root vegetable, are well-known for their high nitrate content, but leafy greens contain even more nitrates per serving. In fact, beets barely made it onto the top 10 list, which is as follows: 1. Arugula, 480 mg of nitrates per 100 grams 2. Rhubarb, 281 mg 3. Cilantro, 247 mg 4. Butter leaf lettuce, 200 mg 5. Spring greens like mesclun mix, 188 mg 6. Basil, 183 mg 7. Beet greens, 177 mg 8. Oak leaf lettuce, 155 mg 9. Swiss chard, 151 mg 10. Red beets, 110 mg
Spring Preview 2021
Arugula, in the No. 1 spot, contains more nitrates than any other vegetable, and by a wide margin too — 480 mg per 100 grams. The second-highest source, rhubarb, contains about 280 mg per 100 grams, which is about the same amount found in a 100-gram serving of beet root juice, whereas 100 grams of whole red beets provide a mere 110 mg of nitrates. Nitrate-Rich Foods Protect Against Heart Disease Previous research has shown that the more vegetables and fresh fruits you eat, the lower your risk of heart disease, with leafy greens being the most protective. As noted by Greger, the reason for this is likely their NOboosting nitrates. This was confirmed in a May 2017 study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.18 In this study, nearly 1,230 Australian seniors without atherosclerotic vascular disease (ASVD) or diabetes were followed for 15 years. A food-frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate food intake, while nitrate intake was calculated using a comprehensive food database. As expected, the higher an individual’s vegetable nitrate intake, the lower their risk for both ASVD and all-cause mortality. According to the authors: “Nitrate intake from vegetables was inversely associated with ASVD mortality independent of lifestyle and cardiovascular disease risk factors in this population of older adult women without prevalent ASVD or diabetes. These results support the concept that nitrate-rich vegetables may reduce the risk of agerelated ASVD mortality.” Leafy Greens and Sports Performance
There’s one important caveat though: Avoid using mouthwashes or chewing gum, as this actually prevents the NO conversion from occurring.23 The reason for this is because the nitrate is converted into nitrite in your saliva by friendly bacteria. That nitrite is then converted into NO in other places in your body.

Most competitive athletes understand the value of NO, and the wise ones take advantage of Mother Nature’s bounty. While research19,20 has shown nitrate supplements can boost sports performance and enhance fast-twitch muscle fibers, you can get the same results using whole foods. For example, research shows raw beets can increase exercise stamina by as much as 16 percent,21 an effect attributed to increased NO. In another study,22 nine patients diagnosed with heart failure who experienced loss of muscle strength and reduced ability to exercise were found to benefit from beet juice. The patients were given 140 milliliters (mL) — about two-thirds of a cup — of concentrated beet juice, followed by testing, which found an almost instantaneous increase in their muscle capacity by an average of 13 percent.

Peace Goals
by Wayne Holmes
Some religions seem to be telling us we can have whatever we want. Believe and persist in prayer, make known your requests to the Universe, ask and receive, or focus your mind on your desire and it will be manifested. Rarely do we hear religions or religious leaders who encourage us to focus on peace. If we could bring peace to ourselves and others, wouldn’t we find contentment with what we have? Instead of seeking more — which only results in taking care of more — why not change our goals and focus on things that will truly bring happiness such as peace and love?
Celebrate St. Patricks Day March 17 “May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness come through your door.”
In order to change our focus we must be intentional. It requires us to change our thinking from getting to giving, for only in creating peace and giving it away are we able to manifest it in our own lives, too. At this point the ego schemes and thinks: To get peace, I have to give it, so, okay, I’ll give it a try and see what happens. That rarely works, because the ultimate goal is based on a selfish motive. The best way to go about any spiritual endeavor is not to ask what’s in it for me — and this question often comes in subtle ways — but to realize, I am rich beyond measure, what can I give today that would benefit someone else. Of course, we’re not talking about money; we’re talking about our time and our spiritual gifts. By changing our thoughts from what can I get to what can I give, we open our lives to being peacemakers — a noble and useful goal.
Wayne Holmes’ Set Your Course shares six months of reflections that will give readers a path to spiritual freedom and help them connect to their soul and inner spirit. Not only does it provide healing from past religious abuse, but also abuse of nearly any form, and beyond that, it provides a path towards taking solid control of one’s religious and spiritual journey.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all.” –Rev. Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home.” Different faith experiences define “home” differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.
Every Path Leads Home:

Life Cycles by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger As all of us here in the Midwest know, Spring is trying to start early this year. We are delighting in walking outdoors at 9 p.m. without a coat to see the stars shining brightly. The sun is not only out some days, it’s WARM. Families are strolling outdoors, airing themselves out after a rainy winter. Dogs are smiling widely, cats are prowling for careless mice venturing out, and the robins are back in town already. For us in the country, the small frogs that live in our drainage ditches have come alive in song, luring eligible female peeper frogs to their ditch for a little procreative fun. Our horses have started their mud rolling early, much to their delight, and they are beginning to shed. Squirrels are venturing down from the trees, and the grass is beginning to green. Daffodils are blooming, trees are budding, and all seems right with the world – unless you are one of the many people devastated by early year tornadoes. Our hearts go out to those families, and we are grateful for all those who are trying to help them. Left to my own devices I could keep going on and on in this vein as Spring and Fall are my favorite seasons. Terri gently suggested that perhaps readers might be more interested in the fascination that animals have for young humans, and vice versa. I think that fits quite nicely with our early season of renewal and hope, don’t you? Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal for all the elements – the sky grows brighter, the sun warmer, the tree sap begins to flow and new leaves appear, weeds spring up all over, birds return and have babies, and we see newborn horses, lambs, and calves begin to show up in the fields. Insects reappear, and in the late evenings we begin to see the baby rabbits hop about. If you think about it, perhaps that is one of the reasons why we humans enjoy the season so much – we are drawn 26
to the young of others. They remind us of new beginnings, new possibilities. We are fascinated by their rapid change from blind baby to curious youngster to full grown adult, sometimes in the matter of a week or two. How many of us will take time even when we are very busy, to stop and smile when we see our first baby rabbit or raccoon or bird of the season? We have lived on our property for 13 years now, and we have noticed that we have generations of birds that return to us – some like the Wrens and Towhees that nest every year. Others, like the Blue Jays and Red Headed Woodpeckers, seem to return every other year or so back to where they, or their parents and grandparent, were born. If you visit a farm or zoo, you will perhaps notice that the reverse can also be true. We visited the Cincinnati Zoo a couple of years ago, and I was drawn to the Polar Bear area by the laughter of children. There I noticed that an adult polar bear was in the water tank right by a full window filled with children. He would slowly sink to the bottom of the water, then push back up to the surface blowing air bubbles the entire time. He did this over and over, and the children were delighted. Terri’s horse Rohan is very curious when our neighbor’s little girls come over to see the horses – he will come clear over to the fence just for them. The horse cookies don’t hurt either, but that’s not his main focus, it is the children themselves. Wild animals will sometimes approach human children (providing they are sitting quietly) more readily than human adults at times. Why? We believe the answer is very simple. Animals connect with others through their heart center. We humans, especially adult humans, tend to reach out mentally first and decide whether or not to connect with another. Human children, in general, tend to reach out from their hearts first just as animals do. Simply put, animals and children connect to others in the same Spring Preview 2021
way. Human children have open hearts, and the animals recognize this, and relax into that invitation for connection. This ability to form and nurture a heart-to-heart energetic connection is also the basis for animal communication. Spring is the time where this interaction, this connection, can be more likely for adult humans as well. The season of renewal reminds us all of the invitation to connect to the Divine through Nature, to our animal friends, and to each other – with open hearts.

The Countdown
by Cynthia M. Brown
I have been told several times by several people how many days until spring arrives. I have not been much of a countdown person in my life. Growing up, I loved school so I didn’t count the days to the weekend, holidays or summer break. I enjoyed summer and since I didn’t dread school, I didn’t reluctantly mark off the days until the first day of school as if marking off my final days of life before interment into prison. Don’t misunderstand me; I do make a great deal of the approach of a birthday, anniversary or a long-planned vacation. I mark them with great anticipation and celebrate them with much fanfare. Somehow, those kinds of countdowns seem festive and as if they enhance the enjoyment of the now. It just seems to me that we spend so much time waiting for the next thing, season or break to arrive that I often ask myself if we are so busy waiting for the future that we sacrifice the now. When my son was little, he used to complain a lot about all the rules he
28
had to obey. Oh, he couldn’t wait to grow up so he could drive a car, not have a bed time, etc. He told me when he was grown he would be so free. I used to tell him he was wishing away his life and his childhood. I used to tell him he would never be as free as an adult as he was as a child. I told him he would have to earn a living, pay for his home, utilities, food… He would have a supervisor at work making a whole lot of rules about his time, dress, and behavior…. I begged him to enjoy his freedom and childhood and not spend so much time wishing it away. Of course, now, at 22, he is wishing for all that time and freedom. Now he says he understands what I was trying to tell him. I tell him now not to waste his life and this moment wishing for a “do over.” I tell him to find happiness in this time and to savor his youth, his health and all the possibilities before him. I remember when my mother turned forty. I remember saying to her, “God, mom, you are FORTY! Forty

years old!” I didn’t feel like my mother was old-forty just seemed like such a BIG number. I was born when my mother was twenty. As I expressed my feelings about her being 40, she just smiled and touched my cheek. With a twinkle in her eye, she said, ”That’s alright girlie. Time has a way of telescoping. When I am 70, you will be 50.” When my mother turned 70, yep, I did turn 50. And it’s so odd to think we had that conversation more than 30 years ago! So, now, after an unusually warm and wet winter, everyone is counting down until spring. I am not. I really made myself slow down and savor the light snow that dusted the city a week ago. On a recent Sunday, I walked my dog in a park, appreciating the snowy hills, the red canes of service berry bushes, the green of the pines, that amazing and magical blue of a winter sky, the brilliant yet distant white of the January sun…. I made myself aware of the cold on my skin and the soothing warm blast of stepping indoors after a long walk. I know I will enjoy the beauty of spring when it arrives but for now, I want to really enjoy each day of this season, for all its gifts. I want to challenge myself to really be alive in this moment, living it fully, not holding my breath, peeling off another page of my desk calendar, hoping for some magical moment that will make life better. I want to really try to remember that each day, each moment is the best moment . None of us is promised more than now. Our lives and our relationships will be irrevocably changed in each instant and if we are counting down, if we are waiting for a better time, we will lose what we have. When I was growing up, on days that my father woke us for school, he would come into our bedroom, switch on the light and bellow, “Rise and shine, rise and shine. The gift is given and the day is what you make it.” I learned when I was older that the Cherokee believe when you awaken each day, you have been gifted with another day of life. You have no right to ask or expect anymore and that it is up to you to honor the creator by living fully in balance with all of life each day. I like to think of a world in which we all honor the gift of another day of life by fully living not a world in which we are waiting for
