New Beginnings and Healing by Cynthia White Flower

“Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!” announced Hunkpapa Lakota Chief, Sitting Bull. “Love is the bridge between you and everything,” Rumi reminds us. Spring is the season of love and new beginnings. All of life springs from the warmth of the season! As life reawakens, Love sings to us through the birds, smiles at us through the flowers, embraces us with the fragrances of new life. We are excited that the unforgiving winter gives way to the absolution of rebirth. Spring brings promise. We cannot help but to embrace the hope of the future through the blessings of spring today. Our hearts rejoice as life responds to the sun’s knock on the door, as nature joyfully bursts forth affirming life. Paramahansa Yogananda invites us to “Live quietly in the moment and see the beauty of all before you.”

an awareness and consciousness of healing. We can all begin anew! Spring comes again and again to remind us that we can start over. This opportunity that we are given is called the principle of regeneration. Webster’s Dictionary says it means, “To be restored …created again…brought back to life.” Spiritual transcendence is our greatest restoration tool to our Higher Self. Yogananda directs us:

The season of spring brings new beginnings, creating

“Prayer is when you talk to God; meditation is when

4

“In meditation, you must go beyond thought. As long as you are busy thinking, you are in your rational mind, on the conscious plane. When you sleep and dream, you are on the subconscious plane, and in your astral body. And when your mind is fully withdrawn in superconsciousness, it becomes centered in the bliss of the spine. You are then in your ideational, or causal, body. That is the level of the soul’s existence.”

you listen to God.” – Diana Robinson. For us to be created again, we must raise our vibrations as high as we possibly can to be at one with the Light.

the direction of our choice by the energies we instill within it makes us the conscious creator.

Sometimes we are held back by our baggage. Forgiveness is a healing tool for releasing the harshness of life, just like the spring recovers the earth to warmth from the harshness of winter. The first step is to heal ourselves. Nature shines upon our personal new beginning to forgive. She warms us with the sun, the light of God that never fails. Bryant H. McGill directs us: “There is no love without forgiveness, and there is no forgiveness without love.” To hold on to negativity is to hold on to the cold. Retired physician and writer, Bernie Siegel, observes, “If you watch how nature deals with adversity, continually renewing itself, you can’t help but learn.”

“O Spirit, teach me to heal the body by recharging it with Thy cosmic energy, to heal the mind by concentration and cheerfulness, and the soul by meditation-born intuition. Let Thy kingdom that is within manifest itself without.” Paramahansa Yogananda

There are tools that spring provides to help us to move forward in a positive direction. The first is fire. The return of the sun starts that fire to release what has passed to make room for the new. We may want to write down what we need to forgive and burn it, with the consciousness of releasing. This principle of fire is very final. As we make the choice to truly release what we are burning, we make room to forgive more. As the issues arise, burn, burn more! Free yourself! Forgiveness is a new beginning, leaving the old behind and starting anew. The April showers are the cleansing rains that can clear the spirit and renew the heart. Call in the Elohim Grace to assist as you stand in the mist with the awareness that you are cleansing your spirit. Let each raindrop dissolve the hardness that has collected as a defense mechanism for life. Feel the peace. Spring gives us more sunlight daily. Sit in the sun and become at one with the light. Repeat over and over, “I am the light.” Let yourself absorb the intelligence of the Universe as you invite it to be a bigger part of you. Mary Engelbreit challenges us to, “Bloom where you’re planted.” To benefit from the energies of spring is to acknowledge the blessings that you already have, to be inspired by the revelations of who and where you are, and to take responsibility for moving ahead. As life changes, so do we. We must step up and greet life from where we are. Henry Williamson teaches us that “Music comes from an icicle as it melts, to live again as spring water.” We are forever in a stage of transformation. To consciously embrace this principle and to inspire our will to go in

Dr. Bernie Siegel believes that “God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings, not endings. Just as graduations are not terminations, but commencements. Creation is an ongoing process...”

Happiness blooms. Happiness returns. True beauty is a ray that springs from the sacred depths of the soul...

ASpiritual sk Sage Woman: Advice

for the Real World with Sage Woman

Dear Sage Woman, I was wondering if you could do an Intuitive reading for me? I am not sure what my life purpose is, and feel like I am lost in my own life? My birthday is January 11, 1969. I am not sure, however, if you do this in your column, I just have lost hope in finding my destiny. Thank you, -Jill S ––––––––––– Blessings to you Jill, I normally do not do readings in this column, however, I was moved to shed some light onto your situation. I believe many of us feel out of touch with our soul’s true purpose because life can be demanding and full of responsibilities. Tapping into your energy, I am shown that this year is the year of new beginnings for you. Many of the problems in your private life will be resolved, and by the end of this year, you will begin having greater clarity. The changes in your life will be positive. Tension will be relieved. Finally, you will feel not only ready for action, but you truly desire action. I suggest you begin journaling each day. Your thoughts and your feelings, the highs and the lows, if recorded on a regular basis, will show a pattern connected to those thoughts, words and actions. As you look at your journal entries over a month, you may begin addressing those areas in need of nurturing or special attention. One tools helpful to your soul’s destiny is spending time in meditation and prayer. Ask for signs to further reveal your passions. A great way to tap your soul’s desire is to volunteer your time around already existing passions. There are so many opportunities to serve in our communities. Even if it is for only one hour a week, it is worth giving attention outside of yourself and taking the action necessary to co- create change.

6

Intuitively, I sense you are here on earth to develop your true, authentic self and to become a leader in whatever field you most discover passion. Your purpose is to take the lead and initiative. This is a great time for you to embrace your creativity and tap into your own unique voice. Finally, ask yourself: “What is it I’ve always wanted to be or do?” And then, just do it. If the vision requires education, training, or workshops, research each opportunity to obtain the credential. It is never too late - unless, of course, we decide it is! I see you involved in a career that calls for leadership and strong motivation. Spirit shows you as a woman with her own business, a freelance artist, photographer or entrepreneurship related to the arts. Take a step in the direction your passion leads. You will see the energy shift. Feel free to reach out to me for a personal reading or life coaching anytime. Blessings and gratitude, Sage

The 432 Frequency by Jill Mattson

Throughout the ages, mankind has tuned music to a variety of frequencies, getting extra doses of tuning notes that massaged the sacral, solar plexus and heart chakras. Each tuning note helped mankind evolve.

while inducing a calming and centering impact. The best testimony of why anyone should seek out these frequency is simple to listen and relax into this heart centering tone.

Of all of the chakras, the heart is the most powerful. Over eons, the other chakras were “shut down” to a greater degree, as people became dense and individualized…seemingly separate from everything else, (according to esoteric sources). The heart still connects us to our Higher Self, other realms and opens emotions such as compassion, forgiveness and love. When we are calm, this chakra pierces and connects to higher dimensional information.

The 432 tone is not readily available... it cannot be heard on our pianos, as this frequency is in-between our smallest interval of musical notes. An instrument, such as a tuning fork, is required to hear this beneficial frequency. 432 Hz has a relaxing and deeply centering impact on the body. The 432 Hz tuning fork creates natural harmonics to resonate with the mind and body, allowing for a deeper and more nourishing experience. Think to the song, Stairway to Heaven, which is written to include this frequency. The song stands apart from others and creates a deep calming experience.

The frequency of 432 hertz (Hz) massages the heart chakra with a warm and calming tone. The tuning and the calmness it creates opens the intuition. This frequency lightens the aura, adjusts emotional states,

frequency for the musical note A, and not 432 Hz. (There can be hundreds of tiny variations in the speed of sound, in-between out smallest musical intervals.) The difference between A=440 Hz and A=432 Hz is only 8 hertz; it sounds slightly lower. However, music lovers claim that music tuned in A=432 Hz is more harmonious and induces an experience that is felt inside the body, especially at the spine and heart. Music tuned to A=440 Hz offers an outward and mental experience, and is felt on the side of the head and then projects outwards. Each frequency creates sympathetic resonance with thoughts, emotions and items in our physical bodies and worlds. Therefore, the frequencies used in our musical scales unconsciously dictate precise experiences for listeners. How much we receive of each frequency impacts us much more than we are consciously aware of. For example, the 440 Hz frequency create outward activity. (Every frequency serves a purpose.) The A=440 is like “aural caffeine.” This frequency produces an industrial spirit in people. Countries in the world become more industrious (literally) while listening to a musical scale with A = 440. Those countries who used ancient scales (accessing calming frequencies), like India, advanced in spiritual and meditative practices in contrast. With the Internet, India now has a huge diet of aural caffeine via Western music and A = 440 scales, while her industrial capacities have simultaneously expanded. Rudolph Steiner, a famous mystic, declared “Music based on C=128 Hz the (C note in a scale in which A=432Hz) will support humanity on its way towards spiritual freedom. The inner ear of the human being is built on C=128 Hz.” The 432 frequency is a serious awakening tool for the spiritual aspirant. Many energy healers use the 432 frequency for precise benefits. Meditating with 432 Hz music can be an extremely powerful and effortless way to reach a deep cleansing experience within your consciousness. Using a 432 tuning fork held above the head clears energy pathways, allowing finer and greater amounts of High Energy to enter the crown chakra. It is like “cleansing the information and energy coming into the body and distributing it throughout all energy

fields of a person”. A deep healing occurs once the fork is struck and the base of it is placed on the heart chakra and slowly moved all the way up to the base of the throat. According to Egyptologists, archaic Egyptian instruments were usually tuned to A=432 Hz. They placed great importance on hearing this frequency. Further, the 432 number is used in the design and construction of sacred places, such as the Great Pyramid of Egypt. Special number energy was incorporated into sacred spaces to create powerful and transformative experiences for people in the temples. According to Ananda Bosman, international researcher and musician, ancient Greeks tuned their instruments predominantly to 432Hz as well. Orpheus, the Greek god of music, used music incorporating 432 hertz for “transformation and harmonizing with nature.” Why did many Ancient Masters value the frequency 432? In much of the ancient world, “Magical” sounds were numbers that resonated (exchanged energy) with frequency patterns found on Mother Earth and in the Heavens. A 432 frequency resonates and shares energy with anything close by that is also 432 Hz. Resonance or energy-exchange, also occurs to lessor degrees with harmonious musical intervals and harmonics (an after ripple pattern of sound). Musical intervals and harmonics are mathematical, and the “chain of resonance” can be figured out for any frequency. The Schuman Frequency is a healing frequency that mankind has grown accustomed to throughout millennia. This frequency is usually 7.96 to 8 Hz. In fact, it has been played for astronauts to keep them healthy in space. It is used for healing purposes. It’s source is a global electromagnetic resonance originating from lightening within the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere. If 8Hz is the starting point, five octaves above is 256 Hz. (Energy is shared through

(Continued on pg. 10)

(Continued from pg. 9)

resonance in octaves.) When C = 256 Hz, A = 432. With this reasoning, some correlate 432 with healing resonances of the Earth. (Keep in mind that since the Schuman Resonance varies a bit, so does its “resonance mathematics”.)

Below is a photo of cymatic images, created from the A = 440 hertz, used in today’s music versus the 432 hertz pitch. Notice the balanced and beautiful shape created by the 432 frequency.

Pythagoras said, “All is Number!” Just what does that mean? Everything is energy. Energy vibrates. Pulsations of energies can be counted and are called frequencies. Modern physicists’ String Theory is based simply on different vibrations of infinitesimal strings. With this thinking, “all is number” - expressed as different vibrating strings (or frequencies) and this creates our world. Ancient man strongly believed that numbers and mathematics found in nature and the heavens “tuned” us - to the Earth and the Heavens, empowering our awakening, and “quickening us” to be closer and closer to God. The 432 frequency is reflected in ratios of the sun, Earth and moon, as well as the procession of the equinoxes, Stonehenge, and the Sri Yantra, among many other sacred sites contain this number. For example, the sun is roughly 864,000 miles in diameter (432 X 2=864) and the diameter of the moon is 2,160 miles (432 / 2). Further, there are 864,000 seconds in a day. Many traditional schools of yoga teach that all living beings exhale and inhale 21,600 times per day. (21,600 X 2 = 43,200) There are 108 beads in a mala prayer necklace. (108 X 4 = 432). According to science, the optimal number of dimples on a golf ball is 432. When the famous late rock star, Prince was asked thousands of questions on his website, he chose this single one to answer: “Please address the importance of ALL music being tuned to 432 Hz sound frequencies?” to which he replied, “The Gold Standard”. Since pianos, flutes, clarinets, trumpets and most musical instruments are tuned to A = 440, musicians must have these and other instruments remanufactured to incorporate this frequency. There are free software apps available, that digitally lower your music so that A = 432. This is the easiest way to listen to a diet of this frequency.

Why You Should Spend Time in Nature by Jennie E. Taylor

...he who understands nature walks close with God. -- Edgar Cayce reading 1904-2

think of a day that went by that I didn’t spend some time in one of them.

The Edgar Cayce readings span an astonishing 10,000 topics, but if I had to pick a favorite, I’d have to say it’s the readings on nature. Because when I read what the sleeping Cayce said about nature—and the nuggets I’ve uncovered about animals—it means more to me and my personal soul journey than just about any other topic. Atlantis is a close second.

The Cayce readings frequently mentioned the health benefits of spending time in nature:

As a child of the 60s, I spent almost all of my time outside. And as the youngest of seven kids, my playmates were more likely to be my cat and the family dog than a sibling—no one wants to play with their kid sister, right? I also spent a lot of time with trees, specifically in and up them! We had some old towering beauties right in our back yard, and I can’t

12

In 1938, reading 1401-2 stated: …as much outdoors as possible would be well for the body. In 1942, reading 2772-1 stated: Also we find indicated that the purifying of mind, of body, by the associations with the great outdoors, is helpful. In 1943, reading 2925-1, stated: Whatever choice is made, let the activity have to do

with being in the open, and having to do with the elements - air, water, earth. But perhaps even more importantly, Cayce talked about the natural world being in sync with the Creative Forces. … whether it is mineral, vegetable or animal, these are spiritualized in that ability of using, doing, being all that the Creator had given them to do. -- Edgar Cayce reading 281-54 Because of this, Cayce advised us that we could learn how to live by taking lessons from nature. If we spend time observing how nature is using, doing, and being all that the Creator had them do, perhaps we could do so as well. Know this in self; that ye may never be so worldly wise that ye may not learn something from the viewing of a sunset, listening to a strain of music, the laughter of children, the song of the bird, the babbling of the brook... -- Edgar Cayce reading 2869-1 One of the most poetic readings I’ve ever found explains this concept beautifully: The song of the bird, the beauty of the rose, the buzz of the bee, the activities of those things that give forth in themselves the expressions of the joy of just using-for the time being--a portion of God in their activity. Would that all men everywhere could gain but that consciousness in life and life’s experience... -- Edgar Cayce reading 410-2 In 1925, the readings answered a question—or rather confirmed the meaning of this statement given as: (Q) We humans are then one with all, one with the mineral, vegetable, animal, human and spirit kingdom. We are the spirit of God… We are one with the flowers of the field, the waves of the sea, the breath of the forest, with all mankind … Is this all true? (A) This [is] all true, yet the mental forces of few are able to comprehend same in its entirety... All is Life. God is God of the Living… -- Edgar Cayce reading 900-89

Infinity

There are several readings that reiterate the oneness of all creation. In ALL NATURE the Spirit of Creation is EMANATING! -- Edgar Cayce reading 345-2 To put it simply, less than a year before his death, Cayce stated it this way in another reading: The source of all life, and life in every form...is of one source, God. -- Edgar Cayce reading 4047-2 Here is another reading along a similar vein: For Life as it manifests, whether in the grass, the rose, the tree, the dog, the cat, the bird, the animal, IS a manifestation of that ye worship as God. -- Edgar Cayce reading 1367-1 In 1922 the readings stated: Mind being and is the factor governing...the interlaying space...between the physical to the soul, and the soul to the spirit forces within the individual or animate forces. We have the manifestation of this within the lowest order of animal creation. -- Edgar Cayce reading 3744-2 Here the readings tell us that even the lowest form of animal—such as a butterfly or a bee, for example— is governed by the Mind which acts as a sort of intermediary between the soul—or spirit—and the body. This is an outline for “body-mind-spirit”—the very tenet of our metaphysical and holistic life. Along this line, in one of my favorite readings, 3374-1, given to a 35-year-old woman in 1943, Cayce is describing her life seal when he says: For the experience of the entity that has meant the most was in that period when it heard the Master say, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin; yet Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” This is the type, then, the field lily with all its beauty, its (Continued on pg 14)

whiteness, and yet its center of gold. On same put three bees - these representing the mind, the body and the soul… These will ever remind the entity, then, not merely to walk in the straight and narrow way but to teach and live so that others also may know the way in which ye should go. In giving the appearances of the entity in the earth, there is much beauty to be drawn from the life. One may never tell a rose to be beautiful nor a violet to give off its fragrance, nor yet a sunset or the storm or the wind to add their voice to the songs of nature. Yet music and nature, and beauty of all kinds, appeal much to this entity. Have you wondered why? Have you used or abused such? These you must answer within self… Ever be a worker, as the bee, yes - but in that way in which it is ever a contribution to making thy portion of the earth a more beautiful place [to] live… For the smile of a baby, the fragrance of the rose, is but a reflection of God’s care for man. Would he but learn the lesson of these little things! For it is the foolishness of man that is the wisdom of God, and the wisdom of man that is the foolishness of his Maker. -- Edgar Cayce reading 3374-1 So what can we learn from this?

One reading even instructed us exactly with: Hence the beauties of outdoor, the harmonies of the actions in nature, are ever … as lessons for life’s own experience. -- Edgar Cayce reading 69-1 Lastly, I’d like to share what Cayce said about communing with a tree. Members may have seen this highlighted in one of our recent Venture Inward magazines (accessible at EdgarCayce.org/ members). In a letter in 1933, Edgar wrote in a letter: ...when I had grown to be six or seven years old… our home was in a little wood. Here I learned to talk with the trees, or it appeared that they talked with me. I even yet hold that anyone may hear voices, apparently coming from a tree, if willing to choose a tree (a living tree, not a dead one) and sit against it for fifteen to twenty minutes each day (the same time each day) for twenty days. This was my experience. I chose a very lovely tree, and around it I played with my playmates that came … It was there that I read the Bible through the first time, that I learned to pray, that I had many visions … -- Edgar Cayce reading 464-12 (Report section) Cayce’s 3 Steps for Communing with a Tree 1. Choose a live tree, preferably one that does not have too much disturbance around it.

I think the readings perfectly express that we are all ONE, and our spirit is a portion of God. By spending time in nature, perhaps we too can learn to “go with the flow” and act in accord with the Creative Forces, giving forth of ourselves in joyful expression.

2. At the same time each day, sit against the tree in silence for 15-20 minutes.

And to help us learn these lessons, we’ve been given this opportunity to share our world with animals and nature—to observe all of life, and in doing so, we can be reminded of what it’s like when we allow ourselves to be in accord with spirit, just as animals and nature are in accord with spirit.

In 2001, the movie Shallow Hal debuted — a romantic comedy starring Jack Black, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jason Alexander. In the movie, Hal Larson, played by Jack Black, was a superficial womanizer who saw only the outer beauty of a woman. After an encounter with Tony Robbins, he is hypnotized into seeing only the inner beauty of a person. People who were ugly on the inside were suddenly seen as ugly on the outside, and those he saw as physically unattractive yet who held an inner beauty were now seen as lovely individuals.

Wayne Holmes’ Set Your Course shares six months of reflections that will give readers a path to spiritual freedom and help them connect to their soul and inner spirit. Not only does it provide healing from past religious abuse, but also abuse of nearly any form, and beyond that, it provides a path towards taking solid control of one’s religious and spiritual journey.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. In my revised version of the film, Shallow Hal would not only see the beauty and worth of individuals deemed “ugly by society, but he would also “ look deeper into the soul of each individual and see the “ inherent worth of everyone he encountered. Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home. Different faith experiences define “home differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.

Every Path Leads Home:

The movie’s theme plays out in typical Hollywood style with the usual twists and turns until the female and male protagonists find true love and ride off together to live happily-ever-after. I love the story and the lessons it teaches, but perhaps the message falls a little short.

injections. I went thru a series of those with little or no results. All the time remaining in almost unbearable pain. I couldn’t stand walk or lie down without the pain. I was desperate for some relief and I didn’t know where to turn. A wonderful friend that goes to our church (Geneva Lewis) begged me to go see Dr. Patrick Baker. This was approximately 2 months after I had injured my back. The day of the appointment I could barely walk into the office. I was slumped over and the pain was obvious on my face. Dr. Baker’s staff greeted me and took me right back and did x-rays and scanned my back. The scan showed my neck and left lower back were severe. I waited in the doctor’s and the Dr. walked in and said, “Mr. Rice, we are going to help you.”

Ken Rice and Dr. Patrick Baker “My name is Ken Rice, I am a 62 yr old man that had never had chiropractic care. In 2009, I had a total hip replacement which was the result of osteoarthritis. At this time I was given a prescription of Meloxican for the arthritis. Six months later I started having pain in my neck. I went to my primary care and he referred me to a spine surgeon. I was sent for a cat scan with dye. The results came back that I would need to have a procedure to put cadaver bones in my neck due to the osteoarthritis. After praying about my situation I decided to hold off on the surgery, at which time they recommended I stay on the Meloxican. I was also on blood pressure medications and had been for quite some time. I am a local beekeeper in Fairfield, Ohio. In the summer of 2012 it was time to extract honey. I was out on one of the farms pulling boxes off the hives that were full of honey. Each box weighs approx. 65-70 lbs. I must of turned the wrong way and a pain shot across my lower back and down my left leg. I thought I strained something and with some rest, it would be ok. The pain didn’t go away. So I went to my primary care physician, They took x-rays and sent me to a neurosurgeon. He said I had a herniated disc and we would try epidural

18

They had me hang over a machine as long as I could. He adjusted me and when I got up off that table I was standing straight and my pain was decreased by 40%. I could not believe what one visit did for my pain. With every visit to Dr. Patrick Baker’s office, my back continued to improve until I was pain free! We are still working on my neck, which was more severe than my back. I have so much confidence in Dr. Baker and his amazing staff, that I know we will get my neck pain free also. My wife Carol and I took a 30 day challenge that the Baker Chiropractic and Wellness Fairfield Clinic offered. It was literally a life changing experience for us. We were to use recipes from the Maximized Living nutritional plans, A book offered at Dr. Patrick Baker’s office. We weighed in on a machine that told your weight, body fat percentage, and muscle mass. After the weigh in, we started our 30 day challenge. The recipes in the book I will have to say are absolutely delicious. We started every morning with a protein shake which was a scoop of Maximized Living Protein powder. That is added to 1 cup of almond milk. To that I would add fresh Kale, fresh strawberries, fresh pineapple, a few almonds. The book is a wealth of knowledge for nutritional values on various things. For example, you would need to eat 20 bowls of oatmeal to equal the nutritional value of 1 bowl of Kale. I put the

fresh kale in the protein shake and when you blend it up you don’t even taste the kale. After a couple weeks we realized this was a life style change we could live with. We both work, so what makes it nice is any of the recipes can be done in 20 minutes or less. The recipes literally explode with flavor. After 30 days we weighed in. I lost 14.2 lbs. and reduced my body fat by 2.8%. My wife did even better reducing her body fat by 3.6%.

life because of the total program Dr. Patrick Baker and his amazing staff offer for everyone. Its not a diet. Its keeping your spine in alignment and discovering a nutritional plan you can follow and enjoy for the rest of your life. I thank God for directing our path to Dr. Patrick Baker and his staff. Dr. Baker and his staff truly care about your quality of life. My wife and I are living proof.”

An added amazing fact is that both my wife and I are off all prescription medications including blood pressure, arthritis meds, acid reflux meds and cholesterol meds. Just as a side note. The acid reflux was caused by the extended use of the arthritis med.

- God Bless, Ken Rice

It is now 6 1/2 weeks and I am down 20 lbs. and my wife Carol is doing as well. We monitor our blood pressure every morning just to keep tabs. So far both are at or slightly below normal with no medications. We are at a point in our lives that we are living a much healthier

Rebirth

by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

A couple of weeks ago, I took a break from work and walked outside. The sun was out, and I noticed something was ...different. I could not quite figure out what, exactly, so I decided to just stand still and see if some insight popped out from the murky depths of my mind. I began to sense a thread, a nuance, a subtle undercurrent flowing around me. I slowed my inner self down some more, and attempted to become still and quiet, to sink down into my surroundings. A tiny thread began to weave around me, and as I explored it, I began to feel a sense of hope, of promise, of quiet joy. I began to notice things like the peeper frogs singing. Their song became louder as I allowed my awareness to expand. The colors of the trees and the grass began to glow, to pulsate with a life force that I had not sensed before. I noticed that the songs of the birds had changed, that I was hearing birds that I had not heard all winter.

20

I looked over at our bird feeders, and noticed that the seed levels were going down more slowly. The birds were finding food elsewhere, or they were occupied with mating and beginning their families. I remembered brushing our dogs earlier that day, and how much hair had come off in the brush. I looked at our horses out in the pasture, and saw how caked with mud they were... A sure sign that they were trying to get rid of their winter coats. I remembered that I saw a large herd of deer in the field down the road a few times over the last week. I caught a glimpse of our hawk overhead, and I remembered that our housemate mentioned seeing a red fox cross our road the day before. The insight that came to me is a very simple and profound one. Every year, the Earth and all her collective beings agree that it is time to wake up, to rebirth/ reinvent themselves. Once the decision is made, each being begins it rebirth dance. For some, this dance is slow and graceful. For others, like the

Apr / May 2018

crocuses and daffodils, it seems sudden and vibrant. We humans, who insist on insulating ourselves from our Grandmother Earth behind building walls and conditioned air, feel a vague sense of restlessness. We might catch ourselves looking out the window more, or looking up at the sky on our way to our cars at the end of a work day. We stubbornly insist that we are not subject to Grandmother Earth’s whims, but in fact, we decide right along with Grandmother and the rest of Her beings to rebirth/ reinvent ourselves each year. Our animals model for us how simple this really is. We were looking for Obi the other day, and he was laying out in the middle of the yard in the dirt, just enjoying being outside in the sun. We have observed our horses starting to take their “sun naps” again, enjoying the longer hours of sunlight. Our cat Diana is absent for longer periods of time during the day, no doubt hunting for unsuspecting mice and chipmunks staggering from their dens after a long, cold, hungry winter. Let’s all stop pretending we don’t feel that little thread of excitement, of renewal right now. Instead, let’s play hookey from our normal routine - for just one hour and give into that desire to be renewed, reborn. Get outside, take a walk and BE in your surroundings. Open your skin and immerse yourself in the hope and joy around you. Think outside your normal box - is there something new you want to do or be? Decide, for that hour, to allow yourself to experience hope and joy. Who knows, you may even decide to take the day off and spend it outdoors at a favorite park or in your backyard. Happy Spring everyone! Enjoy.

CWho onscious Parents Raise Children Rise from Tragedy to Lead the World by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE Spring represents new beginnings, whether a new birth, re-emergence after dormancy, or revealing an unseen transformation and growth that happened under the surface. This cycle of transformation, from the dead of Winter to the birth and renewal of Spring, is also happening to humanity and our global society. There are signs of new beginnings and hope for the future popping up all around us. We can see them if we can turn our focus from fear to hope and understand the laws of nature. Then we can nurture the seedlings we want to grow. After the Darkness of Winter – Focus on the Light Most people agree that we are living in historic times. Times of change bring on a period of disequilibrium, where it seems everything is out of balance or that there has been a regression. This transition is necessary to move to the next stage. A tipping point is also often necessary. This is when a series of small changes or incidents accumulate to the point they trigger a larger, more important change. There are always surface issues that divide people during these times. People who don’t want change, those who do, and even disagreement among them about what needs to change. For just a moment, set aside these divisive issues and center yourself. Now, take a deeper look at the process of what’s happening right now, before your eyes, all around you. Some might describe the past year or so as a cold, hard Winter, where they saw the destruction of their hopes and dreams for the future. Now, just as the crocus and daffodils are rising up

22

through the snow, we are seeing the next generation of young adults rise up amidst tragedy and death to try to change the world. How did this happen? Not long ago young adults were being labelled as self-absorbed, apathetic, disinterested, disconnected, poor communicators that would never be leaders. Can they do it? Will they? Yes! Absolutely! Here’s why. The Children Are Our Future Children develop in stages, from birth to each next stage, in order, from simple to complex. Delays can occur, due to health challenges or traumatic events. There is often a transition period of imbalance before each stage, because the process doesn’t happen overnight. Regressions can happen during this time, which can worry and confuse parents. Adolescence is the transition from childhood to adulthood, when teens seek their unique identity, Truth, and voice. As young adults, they seek their calling, passion, and life purpose. Some struggle with this, feeling a sad, longing emptiness. They may feel so alone and lost in their despair they make desperate decisions that hurt themselves and/or others. Others have defining moments, peak experiences or revelations that chart a clear path to their destiny. These moments are not always positive experiences, but life-changing nevertheless. They can happen in childhood or adulthood. The timing is always Divine, Perfect, and has a Higher Purpose. From this process tomorrow’s adults emerge: the leaders, followers, and the lost, who get labeled “trouble-makers.” All reflect both nature and the nurturing (or lack of) they received from the adults who helped raise and influence them. This life cycle repeats, in nature, our society, and world history. Progress ebbs (regressions) and flows

as it moves forward, following the path of least resistance. Teach Them Well Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The process of an egg transforming into a chick inside a shell is an amazing transformation. Evolution, even major transformations, simply don’t happen overnight. Sometimes the direction or speed of change can be influenced, with focused warmth and nurturing. In the case of children (egg), this needs to come from adults (chicken). Many people think that children have changed over the past generation or two, but human evolution doesn’t happen that fast. What has changed, dramatically, is society and the daily issues it presents, which children and adults need special skills to resolve. When children are taught what to think, the result is mass conformity, emotional detachment, and unaware, robotic clones of the adults who programmed them. Children are ill-equipped to live in today’s world, so little progress or growth in human or spiritual evolution occurs. That’s why it’s important for children to learn how to think. This requires a more conscious, aware, holistic approach by the adults in their lives called Balanced parenting (and teaching). A Balanced style integrates: Mind: research-based information about what works long-term; Body: emotional intelligence, effective language and action skills; and Spirit: a strong connection with intuition, to gain insight and divine direction. It’s taken a several decades, but Balanced parenting and its related concepts and skills are now a part of mainstream society, incorporated into media, education, business, etc. That’s because they are based on the fundamentals of human development and great overall effective relationship skills.

Infinity

Today, we are finally seeing the long-term results of conscious, aware adults using this highly-effective Balanced style to parent, teach and guide children. What’s amazing is that we are seeing these results at a time when parents and children are facing one of the most frightening long-term trends more than one generation of young children has had to face: mass school shootings, often at the hands of another child or “lost” adult. Previous generations of children facing scary events might be told to “suck it up” or “be strong.” Today, research on trauma recovery from adverse childhood experiences shows that the number one factor in fostering resiliency in children is having a relationship with at least one positive, nurturing adult who can help the child process emotions, and channel grief and anger into constructive action. That requires the knowledge and skills of a Balanced style. Let Them Lead The Way For decades, many of today’s teens and young adults felt like they didn’t have a voice about the dangers they had to face every day, by simply entering a school building or going out in public. Time after time they heard about innocent children, just like them, being murdered. They lived in fear, hoping the adults in their lives would protect them. Eventually, it became clear that even the adults who wanted to protect them couldn’t, because other adults in power couldn’t agree on how to do it. Some children lost hope, became apathetic, and were moved to inaction. Just as seeds can sprout and grow roots beneath the Winter snow, these children matured into teens and young adults. Some were fortunate to have the guidance of conscious, aware, caring parents, and teachers and other adults who knew how to help them deal with adverse childhood experiences (or constant news of them). Then came the tipping point. All it took was one

(Continued on pg. 24)

more group of survivors to rise up from the ashes of tragedy and speak up, saying, “Enough is enough.”

and there are many adults who, maybe for the first time in years, are feeling hopeful about the future again.

All those other adults and children who felt powerless and unheard rose up with them, as strong, resilient survivors who refuse to let their losses define them, or be for nothing.

It is truly a new season and a time of new beginnings, thanks to the parents, teachers and other mentoring adults who help young children blossom into amazing young adults. Who knows, they might just lead us into a new season, a new age, or maybe even a new world.

They also encouraged the masses to join them in a common cause on which everyone agrees: children should feel safe going to school and be protected.

********************

Many of these teens have diverse and differing opinions as to what are the solutions, just as many adults do. So what’s different now? They can succeed where many older adults won’t, because they have the listening, communication and problem-solving skills to do so. Plus, they have lived with daily fear, so they are committed to succeeding for future generations of children.

See the Beauty They Possess Inside The circle is about to close. The transformation is almost complete. It took a generation of children to be raised by conscious, aware adults with effective skills, to produce a tipping point number of teens with the awareness and skills they need to step boldly into their destiny. As these young adults go forth into the world, their parents and teachers can’t take credit for directly any of their future accomplishments, but are certainly indirectly responsible for nurturing and educating these children in ways that allowed them to turn tragedy into triumph. We may not always agree with the political or religious opinions others promote, but those who focus on winwin solutions are the ones who are capable of leading and succeeding. So in spite of all the sadness, anger, dishonesty, fear, and injustice we may see in the world, let’s take time to focus on, appreciate and even acknowledge today’s youth for rising to the challenge of speaking up about hard issues. We’ve seen their first appearance on a national stage

New Days Ahead

by Cynthia M. Brown

It is spring again. I felt last year, that after being hit by a car the previous fall, and finally being done with physical therapy and crutches, I would have my life back. It was a new day. Another year has passed and I still have acute tendonitis and some new muscular issues have cropped. Up. Last fall I became allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. That has been a very hard thing to manage. I love to cook and bake and i use nuts all the time. Thy say getting older is not for the faint hearted or as Betty Davis quipped, “It ain’t for wimps.” I do not mind growing older. I don’t like the limitations of

the body as it ages; that is for sure. As with all things though, I am trying to see the glass as half full. It is spring. I want to get outside in my yard and plant my gardens but now I am thinking maybe I should plan for the rest of my life. My mobility is not going to be better in 15 years. I am starting to dream about raised beds and cutting gardens that do not require kneeling. I am thinking about how to make adjustments now so I do not have to re-adjust later. I guess that is the place I find myself- a place of making adjustments; adjustments in my expectations of myself; my future and what is really important to me. I said when I had cancer that the purpose of the disease is to strip us of our vanities. I was always vain about my strength which was compromised by the treatment. I was vain about my memory which is still quite good but nothing like before chemotherapy. I think that life and aging is really about that too. If we are to continue to grow as we age we must accept ourselves, devoid of our vanities and accept where we are in our lives. It is spring. There is much to do in my garden. There is much to do in my house. There is much to do in my life. So much left to accomplish and to experience. The hard part is getting real about what is important and worth spending the energy and limited time I have on. It is a new season and for me a new day, one stripped down to meet me in this place of limited mobility and finite time. While I am sad about what has passed and cannot be again, I am also excited and energized by what is to come and how I will continue to adjust in order to grow and reach my potential. These are new and exciting days.

Longevity Resources Discovering Optimal Health Naturally

Welcome to our feature, “Longevity Resources.” Each issue we will cover topics that will explore endless possibilities in achieving optimal health. The statements or content of the article in this feature is strictly to educate and inform. It is not intended to replace the care and advice of your regular physician.

10 Things to do Daily to Help Your Brain: Part I by Dr. Joeseph Mercola 1. Get Proper Sleep About 1 in 3 Americans gets less than seven hours of sleep a night, and an estimated 83.6 million adults in the U.S. are sleep-deprived.3,4 You may be suffering from sleep deprivation if you work the night shift, have a sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or spend a lot of time in front of electronic gadgets at night. Particularly if your habit is to sleep five or fewer hours a night, you may be putting yourself at risk of cognitive decline and memory issues that will only accelerate as you age. The National Sleep Foundation offers three tips to support your body’s need for quality sleep:6 Vary your wake-up time on the weekends no more than an hour from your weekday schedule to better support a consistent sleep-wake schedule, also known as your body’s circadian rhythm Take a 20-to-30-minute nap on weekend afternoons, ideally between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Keep your naps on the shorter side to avoid feeling groggy or cranky after them, and especially to prevent feeling too awake at bedtime Whatever your approach, research suggests adults need right around eight hours of sleep a night. The sleep needs of seniors, young adults, teenagers and children vary. If you are not sure how much sleep you should be getting, review the sleep needs according to your age. Using a wearable fitness tracker at night may help you gain more insight into your sleep patterns.

2. Train Your Unconscious Mind According to the documentary “Automatic Brain: The Magic of the Unconscious Mind,” your subconscious mind manages about 90 percent of everything you do whether you are asleep or awake. You may be surprised to learn your conscious mind plays only a minor role in guiding your life. In reality, most of what you think, say and do every day is a function of your “automatic,” or unconscious brain (also known as your subconscious). Without you fully realizing it, your brain essentially is running your life on autopilot. Because your subconscious plays such a big role, you will benefit from a better understanding of it, which will help you leverage it to your full advantage. Writing in Psychology Today, Matt James, Ph.D., president of The Empowerment Partnership and master trainer of neurolinguistic programming, assigns several qualities to your unconscious brain. Among them, states James, your unconscious brain:7 • Acts like a young child: Similar to a young child, your unconscious mind needs clear, detailed directions and lots of reminders. It takes instructions literally, so be sure to give it specific (and positive) guidance. • Communicates through emotion and symbols: To get your attention quickly, your unconscious mind uses feelings, imagery and symbols. It’s your job to discern what they mean. • Deals with positives only: Negative words like “don’t,” “no” or “not” are largely ignored by your unconscious mind. For this reason, it is better to say, “I am going to improve my health by avoiding smoking” as opposed to “I don’t want to smoke.” You can also use creative imaging to center your mind on positive thoughts. Because your unconscious mind has a pervasive influence on your life, you can actively harness its power and direct its influence in positive, life-giving ways by:8 • Expressing yourself artistically: Artistic endeavors such as coloring, drawing or painting make use of your subconscious by allowing your creativity to surface and making space for the expression of your true feelings. Because the goal is to tap into your unconscious mind, you don’t need to be a great artist, just open to the creative process. • Rehearsing desired outcomes: A great way to program a new activity, skill or thought into your unconscious mind is to rehearse it and repeat it until it takes root. Similar to the

countless songs and jingles lodged in your subconscious, you can rehearse new attitudes, ideas, outcomes and thoughts that you want to become reality. By frequently repeating out loud what you want, you aid your subconscious mind in catching on and helping you achieve your desired outcomes. • Reviewing before bed: A great way to learn new material, such as exam material, goals, presentations or speeches, is to review it right before you go to sleep. Doing so helps transfer the content to your subconscious, putting it at the forefront of your mind as you drift off to sleep, and potentially influencing the content of your dreams.

15,000 steps per day. Avoid sitting as much as possible — limiting your sitting to three hours a day or less. Prolonged sitting is a risk factor for chronic disease and early death — even if you are very fit and exercise regularly. In terms of the effect exercise has on your brain, scientists have suggested it can trigger a change in the way your amyloid precursor protein is metabolized, thereby slowing down the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s.11 Exercise also increases your levels of the protein PGC-1alpha. Research has shown people with Alzheimer’s have less PGC-1alpha in their brains. 5. Write Down Your Thoughts

3. Focus on One Task at a Time Multitasking is perceived to be more efficient than a singleminded focus, but you’ll feel calmer and more relaxed if you choose to focus on one task at a time. Think about the last time you tried to talk on the phone with a friend while cooking supper or checking your email. I bet you missed much of what your friend was saying because your brain was trying to split time between two very different activities. Research conducted by Stanford University suggests multitasking reduces your efficiency because your brain can only do one thing well at a time. The study authors said: “People who are regularly bombarded with several streams of electronic information do not pay attention, control their memory or switch from one job to another as well as those who prefer to complete one task at a time.”9,10 So, give your brain a break and put your focus exclusively on the one task or person at hand. You may be surprised at the results. 4. Exercise Regularly If you exercise regularly, you not only will have a healthier body, but a better brain, too. Regardless of your age, exercise can provide enormous benefits for your body and your mind. If you’re over 40, it’s especially important to step up your exercise program because your physical strength, stamina, balance and flexibility are beginning to decline due to age. Fortunately, doing the right type of exercise can help you counteract these declines. To achieve optimal benefits, you’ll want to establish a comprehensive exercise program that includes highintensity exercises, strength training, core exercises and stretching. I also urge you to consider walking, in addition to your regular workout regimen, aiming for 10,000 to

The prevalence of computers, smartphones and tablets, as well as the diminished emphasis on handwriting means communication involving pen and paper is becoming less common. As such, technology is causing us to miss out on the brain benefits of writing. For example, research suggests writing things by hand helps you better internalize information and ensures you retain it.13,14 The study authors stated:15 “Even when laptops are used solely to take notes, they may still be impairing learning because their use results in shallower processing. In three studies, we found that students who took notes on laptops performed worse on conceptual questions than students who took notes longhand. We show … laptop note takers’ tendency to transcribe lectures verbatim, rather than processing information and reframing it in their own words, is detrimental to learning.” In addition, getting your thoughts down on paper can help you remove “mind clutter,” especially before going to bed. If you are feeling highly stressed and anticipate not sleeping well as a result, make time to write out your thoughts before going to bed. Simply take out a pad of paper and a pen, set a timer for five to 10 minutes and begin writing whatever comes to mind. Avoid editing yourself and write literally anything and everything that comes to mind. When left unchecked, lingering negative feelings and the emotional stress accompanying them can wreak havoc on your brain health. This is true even if you are doing everything else — diet, exercise and sleep, for instance — “right.” Over time, as you stick with this habit —

ideally as a weekly or even daily activity — your brain will connect with your subconscious, uncovering and surfacing valuable insights and thoughts of which you had previously been unaware. If you are not sure how to address the issues and concerns that surface as you write them on paper, you might try the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). It is a handy tool that involves light tapping over the major energy meridians of your body. EFT is quick and painless, and you can use it as often as you need to unload emotional baggage.

Heaven-Sent Birthday Greeting I was turning a year older in a couple of days, my family decided they would take me out for dinner and was asking what special thing I wanted to do on my birthday. I really did not want anyone to go to any trouble or fuss, but I was excited to get the family together where we would be all in one place celebrating the occasion. It was the morning of my birthday, as I awoke I was feeling a little bit older with stiff joints etc., but felt better as I began to get moving. I was anxious to get started with my day, when I got a call from my brother-in-law telling me my Mom had just been rushed to the hospital. My Mom had been suffering heart problems for years and had some serious close calls, after all being 83 years old, it was not easy to battle with heart disease. I arrived at the hospital and quickly inquired about the status of my Mother’s condition. She was in stable condition, I sat with her throughout the day, they had moved her on the cardiac floor for observation, my brothers and sister lived out of town, so I was calling most of the day to let them know her condition. My family still hoped to at least take me out later for

dinner since my Mom’s condition improved, but I did not want to leave my Mothers side, I told them I could always move birthday plans to another day. As I was sitting with my Mom, she awoke out of a deep sleep, she asked me what day it was. I told her it was Tuesday, she responded saying it is not just any Tuesday, it is your birthday. She fell back to sleep, day turned into night. I felt there was nothing else I could really do, and feeling rather tired, I told my Mom I would see her in the morning. I began to walk towards the parking lot to drive home. It was raining, in fact it really started to rain hard and the wind was blowing, I began to open the exit door of the hospital and knew I was in for a good soaking when at the corner of my eye a mylar balloon came out of nowhere being forced by the wind in my direction. I grabbed the ribbon because no matter how hard I tried I could not free it away from my face. I finally took a good look at it, it had a rainbow on it, then I could not believe what the large letters had read, “Happy Birthday!” What a surprise! The wind sailed the balloon towards the sky. I smiled in the pouring rain as I made my way to my car! – Ann C.
