Summer in the City by Cynthia M. Brown

It is hard to find reasons to celebrate summer when one lives in the city. It is hot; egg-frying on the sidewalk hot. Traffic is awful because it is also orange barrel season; major highway repairs, pothole repairs in preparation for next winter’s damaging salt and freezes; and the added cars on the road as people race off to vacationland….It is noisy; there are three fireworks holidays in four months and the celebratory crackling and booming goes on for days before and after the appointed day on the calendar. I know how excited everyone gets about spring; oh, the garden, the flowers, the countdown for fresh tomatoes and basil… but there are the weeds, the chiggers, the fleas, the flies, the mosquitoes and did I mention the weeds? I have a postage stamp front yard and yet the weeds threaten to choke out my lilies and roses every year. My long narrow backyard with the small wild

4

section behind the fence is always on the verge of being declared a wilderness area for city possums and raccoons. The volunteer trees, wild grape vines and Rose of Sharon encroach on every attempt at order I have ever made. Still, as I try to view life from a half full perspective, there are things about the summer in the city that make it unlike or perhaps very like summer anyplace else. There are the days when the fire department opens the hydrants for “flushing” and the delighted squeals of young children playing in the spray as it sizzles and steams on the hot pavement, cooling everything and everyone in its path. The smells of the evening grillouts; held in the “living rooms” of apartment buildings, the sidewalks in front of the block brick buildings that line the streets of the projects. There is the sound of street music, solo performers and the

Aug / Sept 2018

(Continued from pg. 3)

sounds of radios from open windows; the blare of car stereos passing by. The daytime is filled with color; the many greens of trees and grass; the vibrant colors from all the blooms; the brilliant hues of the sunfilled sky. The wild sounds at night too, fill my mind with memories from my childhood. The constant hum and buzz of crickets and katydids and the blink of fireflies as the sun goes down fill the night air. The flashes of heat lightening and the rumble of thunder that promises rain yet rarely delivers, echoes overhead. The smell of rain when it does come; the charged air, the smell of wet dirt, the hiss of the rain on the parched ground all remind me of how much we all share whether in the city or in the countryside or small towns. Have I mentioned smells? Oh the smell of freshly mown grass and honey suckle! And, as a chef, where would I be if not for the tastes of the summer. The sweet corn, juicy tomatoes, pungent basil and sweet stickiness of watermelon. Nothing says summer like a plump juicy peach or an ice cold glass of homemade lemonade purchased at the neighborhood driveway lemonade stand of the newest entrepreneur! It is summer. It is hot. It is loud. And, like every season, summer brings its own beauty and music. It is summer and while we all are quick to complain of the heat, the bugs and the traffic, let’s remember its beauty, its promise. Summer will yield to the beauty of fall so quickly. So, try this year, to really take a few truly lazy days and enjoy it all before it slips away.

ASpiritual sk Sage Woman: Advice

for the Real World with Sage Woman

Dear Sage Woman, I am burned out and exhausted with all the negativity in this world and in my life. How can I raise my vibration in a toxic environment? Candace W. ____________________________ Blessings Candace, Many of us are confronted with energy and vibrations that come from anger, depression, sadness and selfhatred. This is apart of the human condition and often we have zero control over the situations that unfold in front of us. We do, however, have total control on how we react or do not react. We hold the power of how we choose to respond to life’s challenges and uncomfortable situations. Keeping aware of your own energy is crucial. Here is a quick trick that will indicate the level of your energy vibrations: When thinking negatively, your energy vibration goes lower. When thinking about something that makes you happy, your energy will vibrate much higher. If you wish to have a higher energetic vibration, simply pay attention to what you focus on. When I choose to focus on problems or the issues of others, my thoughts cause me to see gratitude and appreciation. This automatically shifts the energy. And I remind myself that I choose my thoughts; my thoughts don’t choose me. Another way to keep your energy on a higher level is by grounding it - daily. I use meditation, yoga or even just using five minutes to take my shoes off, stand outside and breathe. When we are aware of our energy and stay focused in the moment, we then allow ourselves to be consciously aware, not on auto-pilot.

6

Here are some tips to raise your vibration in a toxic environment: 1. Do not lower your vibration to match lower energy. Use this moment to check in with your own energy and make sure you are coming from a place of love, compassion and heart-centered emotion. It may be uncomfortable at first not to match a person’s negativity, but by staying in the energy of love you will actually be more powerful then the lower energy being transmitted. 2. Imagine yourself in a protective bubble of bright, white light. Imagine this white light shielding you from toxic energy. Visualize a mirror on the outside of the bubble. Whatever is sent your way will be mirrored back. This is a powerful exercise. 3. This is a great way to let go of negative energy carried home with you from the outside world. Take a healing salt bath. Fill your bath with warm water. Use 2-3 cups of Himalayan crystal salt and add a few drops of pure essential oils, such as lavender, to help you unwind and relax. Set the intention to let go of all negative energy. Light candles and soak for about 20 minutes. Drain the tub while staying in. Feel as if all of the negativity is leaving you and going down the drain. Take a quick shower to rinse off the salt. See the shower water as white light further clearing your aura. 4. Tap your thymus. This will boost and restore your energy. It increases your life-force, vitality and strengthens the immune system. Tap for intervals of 20 seconds. Candace, thank you for your question. Feel free to connect with me for a spiritual reading to uncover

We’ll See!

by Jill Mattson

There was a villager elder who saw a young boy, Cho, demonstrate superior skill at horseback riding. He was better at riding than any other person in the village. The villagers said, “How great!” … but the villagers’ great sage replied, “We’ll see.” Several years later, Cho fell from a horse and broke his legs so badly that he would never walk or ride a horse again. The villagers moaned, “How terrible.” The sage replied, “We’ll see.” Shortly thereafter, a war broke out near the village. All boys immediately went to battle, hoping to be heroes, except Cho, who was disabled. The villagers said, “How sad that Cho cannot be a hero too.” The wise sage said, “We’ll see.” Alas, all the young men were killed. The villagers said, “How lucky Cho is.” The sage said, “We’ll see.” And “on and on” the story went.

8

The theme of this story applies itself over and over again in our lives. For example, at its inception, religions were tremendous tools to enable people to improve their lives. Christians learn about grace; Buddhists demonstrate balance; and St. Germain teaches transformation. Religions gave people tools to raise their consciousness. “How wonderful!” …Yet … “We’ll see,” commented the sage. Overtime religious teachings became inflexible dogma; they were even used to persecute and kill others that did not share the same beliefs. “How terrible,” cried many people. “We’ll see,” said the sage. Yet, during these atrocities, people developed compassion and the strength to stand up for each other. In another example, science was birthed and many great understandings were explained. Our lives were improved in so many wonderful ways. For example, the life expectancy of humans was extended. Because

of this gift, many live longer. “How wonderful,” said people. The sage said, “We’ll see.” People so believed in the science that they dropped many practices that were employed over thousands of years, such as prayer, meditation, singing for healing, purifying one’s thoughts and emotions, because these methods were “superstitious” and could not be proven by the scientific method. Ironically, science was utilized in way, similar to the way the tools in religion were used. People forgot about subtle energy treatments, acupuncture, herbal healing, tai chi, and so many more. “How sad,” said people who believed in these practices. “We’ll see,” said the sage. As science continued to grow, greater technical expertise was developed to measure these subtle energy methods. The ancient practices weren’t superstitions after all, but quantum energy techniques. Today, science has advanced enough to measure many subtle energy practices. Now, people can see that science was inappropriately applied. If science can’t measure something - that does not mean it is not true. It means that science cannot measure it - yet. “How great,” said the people. “We’ll see,” said the sage. There is always a “we’ll see” in a world of duality. There is a positive or negative aspect to everything. Everything – no exemptions. Both positive and negative… and opposite ends of the spectrum are endlessly linked together on this seemingly, endless rollercoaster. How do we get off this eccentric rollercoaster?

belief, mysteries, the “sacred” AND balance this with rational scientific thinking (applying science to only what can measured). Sounds fantastic! “We’ll see,” said the sage.

Here’s an example found in the natural world that may answer this question: The physical body deals with an ongoing usage of opposite energies. People use their left brain hemisphere for objective, rational, sequential tasks and the right brain hemisphere for global and holistic tasks. One brain hemisphere understands the big picture and the other works with the small detailed picture. Data from one brain hemisphere seems to be on opposite ends of a spectrum. Instead of being on a roller coaster going from one point of view to its polar opposite, we can blend the two viewpoints for a holistic picture. People can engage whole brain thinking, harnessing both polar opposites at one time. In this example, people keep the wonder,

A Very Special Team – An Interview with Starla & Sue with Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger This article is the first in what we hope will be a series of interviews with pet therapy animals and their human partners. We’ll explore the work they do both from the animal’s and their human’s perspective. Our first team is Starla, a stray dog who found her way to her forever home with Sue, her therapy partner. Together they work with children and young teens in their community. Starla is a sweet, smart, and very cute small dog. We suspect she has a lot of Portuguese Podengo in her, and a little of some other breeds as well. She was found as a stray on the streets and taken to Animal Control, where Sue found her and brought her home. Sue’s first pet therapy dog Lizzie was nearing retirement age, and Sue enjoyed being a partner with her so much that she wanted to see if Starla would like to do it as well. Starla and Sue worked with Love On A Leash (www.loveonaleash.org), an organization that trains animal assisted therapy teams. Starla had to pass basic obedience tasks, the AKC Canine Good Citizenship test, and she also had to become accustomed to not startling at loud noises or sudden movement. In addition, she had to learn to allow people to touch her ears, her face, and her tail. Sue and Starla began working with children in the main library reading program in their community. This program encourages children to read out loud to the dogs, with whom they feel safe and comfortable. Some children will not read out loud to a human, but they will read to Starla! When I asked Starla what her favorite 10

part of this job was, she said that she enjoyed sitting close to the children while they read. She said that when she could touch them, the “wall” between them came down and their energy began to flow together. She loves to share the adventures the children have in their minds when they read. She says that together they travel to many places, and that the children can go anywhere and do anything, and that their imaginations are indeed wonderful places to share. She also talked about how alone and isolated some children are, and that when they read together, the children do not feel so alone. That is the best part of this job, she says. Sue and Starla were asked to come to a school in late Spring where had been a school shooting. The students had to come back after the shooting to finish up the last week of school. Starla described how it felt to be there by saying that it was “all sad”. She showed me a heavy, allencompassing sadness that surrounded everyone and everything. Her job that day was to BE. She described it as being a center of calm love in a great sea of sadness. Sue and Starla returned to that school in early August to be there for students and staff starting the new school year. Starla said her job was very different. This time she saw “rays of light” coming through the clouds of sadness. She was there to make people smile; for many it was the first time they had been able to do so at the school since the shooting. Sue and Starla together make children smile, help them feel less alone and isolated, and in some cases help them heal. Sue shared that Starla has a couple of other gigs as well. She has appeared on TV in her community to help promote the work Aug / Sept 2018

of Love on a Leash as well as to encourage others to adopt dogs who need homes, like Sue adopted her. She has begun to visit children and young teens in their community’s juvenile detention facilities. Starla is indeed a very versatile and talented girl, and together Sue and Starla are making a difference for the children and young teens in their community. We thank them for all that they do! Note: Sue asked the we make sure that readers understand that there is a difference between a pet assisted therapy animal and a service animal. Service animals are highly trained to assist humans with mobility, sight and hearing impairment, or emotional challenges. Pet therapy animals work with humans by simply being themselves and interacting with the humans they visit.

The Orderliness of Unfoldment by Mark Thurston, PhD

We’re all familiar with the axiom “first things first.” Simply stated, it means that there is an orderly and necessary sequence to how things unfold. When we are impatient or want to do things our own way, we may find ourselves frustrated by this principle. But if we’re wise, then we’ll appreciate that the “orderliness of unfoldment” exists as a universal law that makes it easier to find our way. Think about an analogy from mathematics. If you want to learn algebra, you cannot just jump in and start solving complex algebraic equations. First, as a pre-schooler, you learned your numbers; then, as a grade-schooler, you learned to add, subtract, multiple, and divide. Each step in your learning built upon the previous one. There was an orderly unfoldment of your mathematical understanding that eventually prepared you to start dealing with more complex problems. Many traditions of transformational psychology

12

articulate examples of these sequences of unfoldment. One example comes from the teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky—one of the few writers explicitly recommended in the Cayce readings. These two teachers proposed a “Law of the Octave” which suggests that the seven musical notes that repeat themselves as an octave on a keyboard (i.e., do-re-mifa-so-la-ti) exhibit a powerful analogy for how human consciousness progresses through reliable stages of unfoldment. “Do” corresponds to giving “valuation” to something in our lives, such as making teachings about spiritual development of vital importance to us. “Re” corresponds to the “application” of teachings— not just valuing them and studying them, but actually starting to act on them. “Mi” corresponds to what inevitably arises when we start trying to apply principles of personal transformation: we encounter resistances from within ourselves, an internal pushback that doesn’t want to change.

Aug / Sept 2018

This Law of the Octave goes on to say that we reach a critical juncture when trying to reach the fourth stage. Consider how there is no black key on the piano keyboard between “Mi” and “Fa.” There’s a “missing semi-tone” and what’s required is an internal force that lifts our consciousness to “Fa”—a “shock” that comes from a meditation-like shift to remember one’s true self—one’s spiritual essence. Only then, at this fourth stage of the sequence, does something entirely new begin to emerge out of our being. So, what is the equivalent teaching in the Cayce material? Perhaps it’s the A Search for God (ASFG) sequence—a progression of lessons that can lead to personal transformation. Of course, Cayce’s growth sequence has far more steps than the repeating sevenfold sequence of a musical octave. But if we focus on the first four steps of ASFG, we’ll find something equally insightful. Let’s use the process of discovering your soul’s purpose as an illustration. How could the first four lessons collectively create a pattern to follow in finding one’s mission?

The fourth step is faith. In the Cayce philosophy this means the actual experience of unseen reality. It’s not just having really strong beliefs, as important as that may be. Faith is a matter of having direct encounters with the realm of the soul. Here is where we open ourselves to have an experience of a calling from deep within—the invitation to see and embrace a soulpurpose. And if we try to jump right to “hearing the call” without having first done the work of steps one through three, then it won’t work for us, any more than we can start our mathematical training by trying to solve tough algebra problems. Excerpt from the Jul-Sep 2016 issue of Venture Inward magazine available to A.R.E. Members at EdgarCayce. org/members. Learn more about A Search for God (ASFG) Study Groups.

Cooperation was first, because no further development is possible unless we learn how to act in harmony with God, ourselves, and others. Cooperation means more than just getting along with other people. It ultimately leads to being able to love and appreciate (and cooperate with) all the parts of oneself. That will be a starting point—just as the Law of the Octave starts with “do.”

About the Author: Mark Thurston, Ph.D., is a psychologist, author of more than a dozen books, and an associate professor at George Mason University’s School of Integrative Studies. He worked from 1973 to 2008 in Virginia Beach, Virginia for the Association for Research and Enlightenment, as well as Atlantic University as its director of academic affairs. Mark is co-founder with his wife Mary Elizabeth Lynch of the Personal Transformation and Courage Institute (www.transformationANDcourage.org) and can be reached at markthurston.com

Self-knowledge comes second in the ASFG sequence. We’re reminded of the admonition of the Delphic Oracle in ancient Greece: know thyself. Anything else we try to do on the spiritual path rests on shaky ground unless we have some beginnings of authentic self-knowledge with which to proceed. Total selfrealization isn’t demanded at this early step—simply an emerging understanding of who we really are.

Last Sunday Guided Meditation & Drumming, August 26th and September 30th, 1-3pm. No experience necessary!

Once we start to have some revelations about our true character and individuality, then we can effectively choose values, goals, and ideals that will lead to spiritual growth. The ASFG readings on this third step warned how easily we can go wrong. Even with the best of intentions, it’s easy to set ideals based on misperceptions of ourselves, unless we’ve done the work of self-knowledge.

Longevity Resources Discovering Optimal Health Naturally

Welcome to our feature, “Longevity Resources.” Each issue we will cover topics that will explore endless possibilities in achieving optimal health. We are honored to feature one of own past writers, Dr. Paul Fulk (1935-2014). The article written below is just one of many he had written over the years. He was a true pioneer in the field of alternative health and nutrition. The statements or content of the article in this feature is strictly to educate and inform. It is not intended to replace the care and advice of your regular physician

The Importance of the Ileocecal Valve Never heard of it! Most people have not heard of such a thing. Well, you have one and so does everyone else. It is a very important valve in your intestinal system. Hopefully it is working properly in your system. When it malfunctions it could be the mimic of many different syndromes in your body. Colic in young children is caused by an ileocecal valve that is stuck closed. To explain further, the ileocecal valve is a valve or door at the end of the small intestine that is supposed to open and close to all the digested food coming out of the small intestine called chyme, into the large intestine. But it’s primary function is to block any contents of the large intestine from backing up into the small intestine. All foods and nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. This is where candida albicans bacteria aids in the absorption of all your “B” vitamins out of the food that you have digested, and is flowing down the small intestine. That is the only substance that should be in the small intestine. If for some unknown reason the ileocecal valve gets stuck closed, It becomes very painful. This is based on the fact that toxins from the feces back up into the small intestine plus the ilieum of the small intestine balloons out creating a lot of abdominal pressure. It has been surmised that the lack of chlorophyll in the

14

diet could be the causative factor that will precipitate the closed ileocecal valve. A normal functioning ileocecal valve will open and allow the contents of the small intestine to flow into the large intestine, but first there is a small amount of feces that will fill the appendix that sends a signal to the hypothalamus in your head. This triggers the peristalisis of the large intestine to move the contents along in the large intestine. A diet high in spicy foods or high roughage such as peppers and or pop corn will be a reason for the ileocecal to get stuck open. Cessation of these foods will help with the valve being open, but in many cases it may require some manipulative treatment to fix it so that it will function normally. When the valve is not working as it should, it can create headaches, back aches, shoulder pain, abdominal pain and many other pain syndromes that will persist until it is fixed. We have talked about the valve being stuck closed, but what happens if the valve gets stuck open. The chyme from the small intestine will then, without any control, be transferred into the large intestine without any regulation of quantity or quality because the valve is stuck open. Diarrhea could be caused by such a situation. Many times this irritation is because the ileocecal valve is stuck open or closed, there is a reaction similar to that of a appendix in trouble. Further tests need to be done to differentiate between an ileocecal valve and an appendix. Many time the appendix is removed when it is not the problem. The appendix plays a very important role in the function of the large intestine’s peristalisis that moves the digested food through the colon. The appendix is the instrument that sends the signal to the hypothalamus to cause the peristalisis to start in the colon. God put it in your body for a reason though I’m sure you have heard, you can do without it. Waking up in the morning fatigued, dark circles

Aug / Sept 2018

under your eyes, all are indicators of ileocecal valve involvement. If the valve is stuck closed many symptoms will occur. There are certain points that when stimulated, will correct the closing or opening of the ileocecal valve. When the valve is closed, the toxin from the feces will back up in your system causing you to be poisoned from the toxins. A skilled professional who knows how to fix the situation can correct this. I have been doing this for 35 years. It is not an uncommon finding.

It wasn’t until I donned a clerical collar that I came to understand how people viewed religious leaders differently. Some were comforted by my presence while others seemed ill at ease. “Before long I realized that many had been damaged through judgment, guilt, rejection, and condemnation by a religion or by someone religious. I’m happy to report that these people do not have to languish in fear, depression, or resentment. “In Every Path Leads Home, Wayne Holmes has created a brilliant and very gentle way out of religious abuse and intolerance into peace, happiness, and personal freedom. “It is a way to heal us all. –Rev. Wayne Holmes’ Every Path Leads Home is a beautiful book of acceptance. Our lives on this plane of existence are of short duration, and we are all “headed home. Different faith experiences define “home differently, and each suggests a path or paths. For anyone who has been abused by the supposed rules and strictures of a church or congregation or pastor, for anyone who has come to see religion not as a faith experience but rather as a set of ironclad rules, for anyone who has grown weary of the struggle to find God by whatever name: Every Path Leads Home is a must-read.

Every Path Leads Home:

The lighthouse has only one job — to shine. As spiritual beings, created in the image of The Divine, our function on this planet is also to shine. We are called to spread Light to all we encounter. The lighthouse is stationary, warning of peril to some, but also beckoning safe harbor to others. We were created to shine our lights into the world. The days of warning have served their purpose, and the days of beckoning are now calling out to the world to enter safe harbor and be at peace.

Himalayan Pink Salt

“The Salt of the Earth!”

The health benefits of Himalayan crystal pink salt is a wonderful alternative to regular table salt. People in general may be using standard salt everyday for cooking and adding flavor to their favorite meal. Are they aware that there is a healthier way to enhance their food with a pure salt that is readily available? The beautiful color of pink in the Himalayan salt comes from natural sources of minerals. This salt contains over 80 of these minerals and is unrefined. It happens to be millions of years old. It is found in an environment where it sits untouched, free of toxins and pollutants. Salt is so important to the human body that one cannot live without it. The majority of people may not know there are types of salt that are not as healthy as Himalayan salt. Regular table salt is cleaned with chemicals and does not provide benefits for maintaining optimal health.

16

Under a microscope, crystal salt has a perfect crystalline structure. It is mined by hand and hand washed. Himalayan salt regulates the water content in your body and promotes a healthy pH balance. This salt creates healthy heart function, unlike regular table salt and contributes to keeping bones strong. It also helps to maintain blood sugar levels. Supporting sinus health, this pretty pink salt promotes a healthy respiratory system and can also be used as a good bath soak for sore muscles, helping to prevent muscle cramps. Sea salt is a popular choice for seasoning food and it is widely used for other purposes, but it still does not have the healing properties like Himalayan salt does. Sadly, our seas are being polluted daily.

Himalayan pink salt is beginning to show up now in supermarkets and does not seem hard to find. In some places it has been considered as gourmet salt and still may be regarded as such, but the flavor is delicious and worth trying.

When I first consulted with Dr. Baker I never thought I would ever walk without some kind of walking device. For the first time since March 2015, I was recently able to drive to Dr. Baker’s office myself for my chiropractic adjustment. Before this, I had to rely on someone to bring me to the office. What a relief it is now to be able to drive myself. Today my pain is virtually gone and I’m improving with every continued chiropractic adjustment.

Carol with Dr. Patrick Baker I was bound to a wheel chair and a walker since March of last year. I couldn’t walk or put any weight on my right leg. When I tried it would just give out. My leg just wouldn’t support my weight. I couldn’t even drive my car because my right leg wouldn’t work well enough to push the gas pedal and the brake. The pain in my back and leg was so bad I would rate it a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. I had been to 5 medical doctors: Different orthopedics doctors who both said they couldn’t help me; my regular medical doctor who said I had to live with it; and my oncologist who said, “I just don’t know what to do for you.” So after 5 doctors said they couldn’t help me, I was lost. Then one day Kathy, a patient of Dr. Patrick Baker, said I had to see him. Kathy told me Dr. Baker has helped many patients with peripheral neuropathy and a pinched sciatic nerve. So I made an appointment and consulted with Dr. Patrick Baker. Dr. Baker performed an initial examination. A nerve scan showed I had multiple areas of subluxation, and x-rays confirmed it. I was put on a treatment program to correct my subluxations. To my amazement I went from a wheelchair, to a

The good news is that there are natural remedies for sore throat, which can be just as effective as their pharmaceutical counterparts. They also don’t pose any serious side effects on the overall health of the body. Some of the options you can try are:

•Chamomile tea: Boil 1 cup of water and add the chamomile tea bag. Let it steep for 10 minutes. Add honey or lemon to taste.3 •Sage: Add a handful of sage leaves and stems to boiling water. Turn off the heat and cover the pot. Let it steep for 20 minutes.4 •Turmeric: Add turmeric powder to hot water. Let it steep for 15 minutes.5

•Saltwater gargle: Dissolve half a teaspoon of salt in one cup of warm water. Gargle the saltwater several times a day to dislodge mucus in the throat and flush out irritants.1

The Spirit of Alchemy & Faith by Cynthia White Flower

Within the spirit of alchemy and faith, one can live a magical and fulfilling life! – Cynthia White Flower Life is magical, if we choose to open that door. There is the assertion that we can live “Heaven on Earth.” What we allow into our consciousness becomes our world. Mass media bombards us with grandiose scenarios of negativity through “News,” music, movies, programs, even “education.” But at the end of the day, the question really comes down to, “What is your truth?” What are you opening your doors to?

Alchemy is defined as an ancient tradition of changing miscellaneous metals into gold. In the spiritual sense, we are the gold. We are the precious beings that the sun shines upon to show us how very golden we are by unceasingly providing the examples of warmth, beauty and the manifestation of life by shining to, in and through us daily! This is who and what we are, the warmth of love, the beauty of the Creator’s creation and the testimony that life- lives, pulses, exudes, shines from us into the world. We are provided the gift and we are the gift.

Free will is a gift that we have been given. We can choose to live outside of the “norms” to make choices that supports the hope in our hearts, our faith in love, and our unyielding quest for something better! Within the spirit of alchemy and faith, one can live a magical and fulfilling life!

As the golden ones, how do we maintain our golden energies? How we handle the responsibility of choice determines how well we hold onto our “golden right.” We live in a world of Polarity, the world of spirit and matter, light and dark, good and bad. As students of the Earth, we are here to learn to choose the path of

20

Aug / Sept 2018

The Light. As we factor in karma, mistakes, feelings, there is a need to change those energies that are not golden- back into gold. In the 20th Century, we were introduced to Divine Alchemy for the purpose of transmuting and transforming that which is less than the Light of Godback into the golden light. The concept of the Violet “transmuting” Flame was channeled to Guy Ballard. Its use is based upon the concept that we command electrons through our free will and emotions, and that they assume the shape requested. Calling upon and consciously using the violet flame for the purpose of transmuting, we can change energies back into the golden light. From the visible spectrum, we know violet would glow the hottest. This is so in the spiritual teachings as well. Through the books called The I AM Discourses, we are taught that we are the co creators, as the God substances are at our disposal for constant use. Through our free will we take command. The violet flame was given to us to requalify the electrons from darkness back into light. In The I AM Discourses, we are taught the basics of the first sign of the zodiac, Aries, which says “I am.” This is the concept of “I exist.” This is also the first step in God Realization and empowerment. We are saying, “I AM involved in all of the decisions, I make. I AM the creator through all that I am. And every time I use the phrase, “I AM,” I am bringing God into all that I think, say and do., indeed, into all that I AM!” Through this “I AM” concept, we call the Violet Flame into action. The prayers, statements, dictations, invocations, begin with the statement of co-creation, “In the name I AM that I AM , I AM calling the violet flame to transmute and transform…” and the exact situation is expressed that needs to be transformed. I have used the violet flame since the 1980s to transmute and transform karmic situations, karmic patterns, illness, shame, fear… I have even used it when driving. When someone else is stressed and is delivering that stress to me by driving on the tail of my car. I simply say “No” to the stress and say “Violet flame,” and they back off every single time! By transmuting and transforming the darkness in our

lives back into the light opens the doors for more good to enter. Darkness does not support “Heaven on Earth,” but light does. We can change our lives by invoking the violet flame to change all that is less than perfection manifest. We only need to have faith as we use this tool! There is one thread that follows us wherever we are and that is our own unique thread of truth. It shows and shines forth in all that we are. In the book, Electrons, The Building Blocks of the Universe, The Beloved Maha Chohan teaches, ““Let there be light and there was light.” Light is the instrument of the great Universal Intelligence. It is the transmitter of God’s peace, happiness, beauty and plenty. Turn the consciousness to the light within, for that is the connection with the Father over which his substance and perfection flows to enrich the individual experience world.” About the Author: Cynthia McNabb, B.S., M.S., (aka, Cynthia, White Flower) is an author, teacher, counselor and an ordained spiritual minister. The Alchemist Speaks to Parents by Jody Johnston Pawel, LSW, CFLE Alchemy is the transformation of one element to another, or a shift from physical to non-physical, if only in perspective. Spiritually, the process involves an expansion of consciousness that can both purify and transform, which helps you develop insight and intuition. You are probably familiar with the book, The Alchemist, by Paul Coelho, about a shepherd boy in search of worldly treasure. (See the Author’s Spotlight.) In it, the boy learns much about life, which transforms him. That book doesn’t follow the boy’s journey so far into adulthood that you see if he becomes a parent. If he did, he would start a whole new journey of transformation. Any parent will tell you that becoming a parent and the journey of parenthood is transformative. It reveals your imperfections, so you can purify them. You can develop insight into your own inner workings, and choose who you want to be, for your children. You also can become more holistic in your relationships, balancing love, logic, and intuition. Parenting “in the physical world” is challenging. Every day there seems to be so much to do and deal with that it’s hard to just BE there for your children. When you apply alchemy and faith, however, you start seeing the non-physical, higher purposes in the process of parenting, for your self-growth and your child’s. So imagine there is a Vol. 2 sequel, “The Alchemist Speaks to Parents.” What might it say? Which quotes from The Alchemist hold pearls of wisdom for parents?

so hard to get, then you become an instrument of God, you help the Soul of the World, and you understand why you are here.” Not everyone is meant to be a parent. It’s a higher calling, for sure. There are many people who wondered what their Life’s Purpose was, until they had children. Being a great parent is a worthy enough Life Purpose to stand on its own. You don’t have to be rich or famous or even have career outside the family. You are responsible for a life, influencing the formation of a human being, who will go on to interact with and change the world, for better or worse. “No matter what he does, every person on earth plays a central role in the history of the world. And normally he doesn’t know it.” Parents change world history every day, because their children are tomorrow’s adults and leaders. That makes parenting possibly THE most important job on earth. Even non-parents are part of this outcome, based on how they treat this child. We are a global village.

Transform Being Right to Being Effective Because parenting is so important, some parents want to make sure they do it right or that their children do things the right way. They try to control who the child is or becomes. They use negative force or positive bribes and rewards to manipulate and control children. All of those approaches will backfire longterm. “It’s one thing to feel that you are on the right path, but it’s another to think that yours is the only path.”

Transform your Parenting Perspective “If you believe yourself worthy of the thing you fought

22

When parents focus on being right, they sacrifice being effective. Such perfectionism or micro-managing is difficult for children to be around. It causes them to

restrict their energy, to keep their defenses up, instead of being able to be themselves, knowing they are accepted. “If someone isn’t what others want them to be, the others become angry. Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own.” When parents try to control their children, it hurts the child’s self-esteem, because it implies they aren’t good enough the way they are. This leads to discouragement, which is the root cause of all intentional misbehavior (Rudolf Dreikurs). You can guide, teach, and hold children accountable in loving, firm ways, without being controlling. So instead of focusing on fixing a child, fix yourself and you will naturally inspire others to do better.

but you can repair the damage by apologizing and asking for forgiveness. This is not a weakness; in fact, most children see it as a sign of strength. When you fall off your path, the most consistent thing to do is to get back on your path. Rewind. Start over. “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.” When you model humility, are honest about your mistakes, know how to apologize, and rebuild trust, it can prevent damaging a relationship or help heal a broken one.

Transform Judgement into Unconditional Love “One is loved because one is loved. No reason is needed for loving.”

Transform Mistakes into Forgiveness “Everything that happens once can never happen again. But everything that happens twice will surely happen a third time.” In parenting, there are those one-time, defining moments you want to pay attention to and do your best. Usually, though, if you make a mistake, the problem won’t go away, so you get a do-over. “The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.” Sometimes, you can have a very effective plan that seems not to work. If it makes sense and feels right, maybe you simply need to use it consistently, long enough to see results. “When you can’t go back, you only have to worry about the best way of moving forward.” It’s impossible to unsay or undo something hurtful,

Infinity

One thing that children often teach you or somehow miraculously inspire you to do is to love unconditionally. You might not have received this kind of love as a child. But your children show you how it feels to be loved so deeply and unconditionally, making them your greatest teachers. “When you are loved, you can do anything in creation. When you are loved, there’s no need at all to understand what’s happening, because everything happens within you.” Being loved, especially unconditionally, is transformative in itself. It helps you heal your childhood wounds and re-parent yourself. “When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”

(Continued on pg. 24)

23

(Continued from pg. 23)

When children are loved, in spite of their imperfections, bad behavior, difficult personality traits, or mistakes, they struggle to understand why. There is no answer, because they don’t have to do or be anything to be loved. This realization is transformative. And because they have received forgiveness and grace, they strive to be and do better, naturally.

child’s self-esteem, which increases a sense of security and well-being. That improves the child’s selfmotivation and behavior, which reduces your stress and helps you enjoy being around your child.

Transform Gut Feelings & Reactions into Intuition Transform Distraction into Presence “If you can concentrate always on the present, you’ll be a happy man. Life is the moment we are living now. Parenting in today’s world is challenging in many ways. One aspect that’s the hardest to manage is being constantly bombarded with demands for your attention, which makes it difficult to concentrate and focus. This creates so much stress for parents. But if you can stop, in that moment, and be present, especially when you are with your child, you suddenly realize this is where real life is actually happening. “The simple things are also the most extraordinary things, and only the wise can see them.” How many times do you try to capture little moments when you can reply to one more email, run one more errand, or entertain yourselves while waiting for a child at an appointment or lesson? We all do it, right? Then this “free” times gets quickly with more distractions. Have you noticed, though, when you put down your phone and watch your child, just observe non-judgmentally, that you start to relax? You become present. You start noticing little things.

“You will never be able to escape your heart. So it’s better to listen to what it has to say.” A lot of parents confuse intuition with gut feelings, which lead to gut reactions, which usually make matters worse. Gut feelings are often strong and driven by past programming. They are often fear-based and negative. That’s why they lead to gut reactions, which will usually either escalate a situation or give a payoff to bad behavior, thereby reinforcing it to continue. “Intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life.” Intuition is soft; it can be very clear and strong, but it’s still soft. It doesn’t yell at you, or scare you, or tell you that you have to be in control. It reassures you that everything will be okay and shows you the way. This allows you to go with flow, in the direction that you know is right.

“The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present, what comes later will also be better.”

By becoming more present, in the moment with children (yours or others), and observing them, we learn more about ourselves, can give them what they need (which might be different than what we think they want), and we can learn about and heal ourselves. Children become our greatest teachers and parenting (or teaching, or caregiving) becomes a transformative experience that not only changes us, but make the world a better place, now and for future generations to come. __________________________________

There are those who have read “The Alchemist” book many times and there are those who have not read it at all. The message that the author, Paulo Coelho conveys with this book, is that it is possible to fulfill your destiny and live the life of your dreams. Another powerful message Paulo expresses in his book, is that when a person really desires something, all the Universe conspires to help that person to realize his dream.

HTarget ow to Exercise in Your Heart Rate Zone by Dr. Joeseph Mercola Exercise has been a game-changer for me since I first started with it in 1968. My consistent commitment to exercise the last 50 years has improved my health to a level that would not have been possible through diet alone. Integrating some kind of exercise program into your life is the only way to be optimally healthy. After years of doing cardio, I am now a passionate fan of high intensity interval training (HIIT). Not only does HIIT shorten the time of my workouts, but it also elevates my heart rate and strengthens my heart muscle. This year I have been doing a deep dive in molecular biology and have learned that exercise is responsible for increasing PGC-1alpha, which is a transcriptional coactivator that regulates the genes involved in energy metabolism, and more importantly is responsible for increasing your mitochondria in a process called mitochondrial biogenesis. Beyond PGC-1alpha exercise also activates other transcriptional activators Nrf2 and FOXO3a, which are both responsible for improving your response to oxidative stress by increasing superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione. I used to believe that diet was responsible for 80 percent of your health and exercise 20 percent but I suspect it is much closer to a 60/40 split. I have painfully learned that chronic cardio is not ideal and that high intensity but brief exertional efforts offer superior metabolic benefits in a shorter time. In order to achieve these benefits it is important to know how to calculate your maximum heart rate (MHR). Accuracy is important because certain high intensity benefits can only be realized when your heart rate is elevated for specific intervals. Overestimating your heartbeat by even 20 beats per minute can make a big difference in the quality of your workout. Let’s take a closer look at how and why you should exercise in your target heart rate zone.

26

Understanding Your Heart Rate and What Affects It Most healthy adults have a resting heart rate (RHR) of 60 to 100 beats per minute. Due to their smaller bodies and heart size, infants and children have higher heart rates than adults. The “normal” range for your adult RHR remains consistent as you age. For best results, you can determine your RHR when you are sitting or lying down and when you are calm, relaxed and in good health. If you have a low RHR — anything under 60 beats per minute — it may be a sign of health and not necessarily an indication of a medical problem. Generally speaking, lower RHRs can be a sign of better cardiovascular function and more efficient heart function. If you are a fit, well-conditioned athlete, you may have a RHR as low as 40 beats per minute.1 According to the American Heart Association, the following factors have been shown to affect your heart rate:2 • Air temperature: Changes in air temperature and humidity can raise your heart rate by five to 10 beats per minute because your heart has to pump a little more blood to accommodate the weather • Body position: Typically, your pulse is the same when you are resting, sitting or standing, but it will elevate temporarily when you move from sitting to standing (it will soon level off again) • Body size: If you’re very obese, you may have a higher resting pulse than a person of a smaller size, but it is unlikely you will have a heart rate more than 100 • Emotions: For sure your emotions can raise your heart rate; particularly if you’re stressed or anxious, those feelings will be reflected in your pulse • Medication use: Medications can either raise or lower your pulse; antidepressants, beta blockers and

opioid painkillers tend to slow your pulse, while too much thyroid medication will quicken it Higher Heart Rate Is Associated With Increased Incidence of Heart Attack While having a heart rate between 60 and 100 beats per minute is considered “normal,” research suggests maintaining a heart rate at the lower end of the spectrum will be better for you. A large U.S. cohort study involving 15,680 participants with a mean age of 54 years enrolled in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study suggests a higher heart rate is associated with a greater incidence of:3 Heart attacks Heart failure Strokes Early death from heart-related and nonheart-related causes During the research, which began in 1987, participant heart rates were recorded at baseline and during follow-up visits about every three years for the next 28 years. Increases in time-updated heart rate — defined as the most recent heart rate value measured prior to an event (or the end of study) — and change in heart rate from the preceding visit were both associated with death, incident heart failure, incident heart attack and stroke. Specifically, with respect to their time-updated heart rate, participants faced a 14 percent greater risk of allcause mortality for every five beats per minute their heart rate increased prior to an event (e.g., a heart attack or stroke). Similarly, they faced a 12 percent greater risk of allcause mortality for every five-beats-per-minute increase noted for the change in heart rate measurement. Due to the serious health risks associated with higher

RHRs and increases in your heart rate over time, the study authors recommend measuring and tracking your RHR at regular intervals. Other Heart-Related Troubles That May Affect Your Ability to Exercise Chronotropic incompetence (CI) is a condition marked by your heart’s inability to increase its rate in proportion to the output that is needed, as in the case of exercise. One pair of researchers suggest CI is “an independent predictor of major adverse cardiovascular events and mortality. It is present in up to one-third of patients with heart failure and contributes to their prominent exertional symptoms and reduced quality of life.”4 Not only is it a sign of trouble when your heart can’t meet the demands for increased output with respect to exercise and other tasks, but you also face an increased risk of early death if your heart is consistently unable to return to its resting rate after periods of exertion. Research suggests a generalized decrease in vagal activity can be a risk factor for death To test the hypothesis, a six-year study5 involving more than 2,400 adults with a mean age of 57 years, who did not have a history of heart failure, coronary revascularization or pacemakers, found participants with abnormal values for heart-rate recovery were twice as likely to die than those with normal heart-rate recovery cycles. The study authors stated, “A delayed decrease in the heart rate during the first minute after graded exercise, which may be a reflection of decreased vagal activity, is a powerful predictor of overall mortality.”6 How to Determine Your Maximum Heart Rate To maximize the quality and effectiveness of your workouts, you need to determine your heart’s (Continued on pg. 28)

maximum capacity for exercise. There are several methods for calculating your MHR. First, you can use the “old-school” method, which involves subtracting your age from 220. If you are a 25-year-old, your MHR would be 195. Some experts believe this method to be inaccurate, especially as you advance beyond age 50.7 You can further personalize your number by testing your heart rate during intense exercise using one of two methods: 1. MHR: Declan Connolly, Ph.D., exercise physiologist and coauthor of the book, “Heart Rate Training: Increase Endurance, Raise Lactate Threshold, and Boost Power,” suggests getting your heart rate up as high as you can. He says:8 “A simple test I have proposed over the years is going out onto an outdoor track, jogging 400 meters (1/4 mile) as a light warm-up, then running [the same distance] as fast as you can. Repeat that entire sequence two more times, for a total of six laps — three jogging and three fast [running]. Check your heart rate right after the third set. Whatever that number is after the last lap is a good indication of your MHR.” If you are not able to run for whatever reason or may be prone to injury from running, you can complete this exercise on a stationary bike or other machine using the same set structure and time sequence. If you need help, consult a personal trainer. 2. Heart rate reserve (HRR): Dr. Bryant Walrod, team physician at Ohio State University, suggests a different technique that involves first calculating your MHR using this formula: 208 minus (0.7 x your age).9 In this scenario, if you are 25 years old, your target maximum is 190.5 beats per minute. Says Waldrod, “This formula tends to be more accurate as you get older.” Next, you need to find your RHR by either using a heart rate monitor or counting your heartbeats for 60 seconds when you are sitting down and feeling relaxed.

28

Finally, use those two numbers to calculate your HRR as follows: MHR minus RHR = HRR. “As you get fitter, your RHR will drop,” noted Waldrod. “If you’re consistent, your RHR will change, so check in with that number at least annually.”10 Fans of HRR suggest it provides a better target heart rate to achieve optimum levels of exertion based on both your maximum and RHR. The Importance of Getting in the Zone During Exercise For exercise to be effective, you need to know your heart rate and work out to the degree that your body “gets in the zone” (your heart rate zone) and stays there for a defined period of time. In this case, the zone can be one of three levels and each one provides different potential benefits for your workout. You can use either your calculated MHR or your HRR to determine the following numbers: Aerobic/low intensity: 50 to 75 percent of MHR or HRR Anaerobic/moderate intensity: 75 to 85 percent of MHR or HRR Anaerobic/high intensity: 85-plus percent of MHR or HRR Once again, if you are 25 years old, you have a low intensity range of 95 to 143, a moderate intensity range of 143 to 162 and a high intensity range of 162 and above. The low intensity range is consistent with conventional cardio exercise that is usually performed in 30- to 60-minute segments. Moderate intensity exercise is characterized by bursts or intervals lasting one to three minutes. High intensity work takes places in the shorter bursts or intervals lasting just 10 to 45 seconds. After years of doing mostly cardio, I am now a
