Kalpana Parekh, clinical director of First Step Home, has always worked in social services over the course of her 35 year career. Born in Ethiopia , brought up in India by her grandparents, she graduated in India with Bachelors in English Literature, and completed her Masters in Social Work. Kalpana was from a family where women did not work and yet she did so, working in the slums of India and then moved to England where she worked in the field for 10 years. She came to the United States in 1989 and began working for a service agency in New York. She has been working in Cincinnati for the last 20 years, including having her own private practice for seven years. First Step Home is a program that helps women fighting substance abuse and mental illness. The program is residential, so women can bring their children. They can work through the program and try to rebuild their lives in a safe and supportive environment. The program teaches them survival skills. The program provides child care and parenting classes. Some women come to the program directly from court. Women are required to do 30 hours of group work as part of their recovery. When women complete the first portion of the program, they move into the Transition Program with their children. The women focus on finding employment, housing, childcare and building sober support networks. The program works with over a dozen women in the residential and transitional programs both. Kalpana has been with First Step Home for one and one half years. She said she wanted to work with women and children to help them make positive changes in their lives. She said she sees women with so much potential but it has been suppressed. She said the staff works hard to help women develop insight into their self-destructive behaviors. The facility hosts family nights to help people continued on pg. 4

continued from pg. 3 understand that there is hope for recovery. They educate the women on the nature of addiction. An addiction specialist comes twice each week to work with the women in the program. Fist Step Home’s approach is holistic. Women are taught to change their food habits, to exercise, find a spiritual path, coping skills and stress management. “First Step Home does not judge anyone in need of help. Outreach is designed to help women get treatment before their substance abuse issues destroy their lives and the lives of their children,” she said. Kalpana said the stigma for women with substance abuse problems is greater than that for men. A large percentage of women with substance abuse problems have a history of trauma and physical and emotional abuse. These traumas contribute to the treatment needs for women. The stigma associated with substance abuse makes it difficult for women to seek treatment. The feelings of guilt and low self-esteem only exacerbate the issues. If the situation is complicated by abusive relationships it is even more difficult to break free and seek help. Currently there is a waiting list for services. Kalpana said they have just begun an Outpatient treatment program on your brain and they provide Anger Management, Parenting, and Relapse Prevention etc. classes as well. “We also just purchased four family apartments which we are planning to open in Jan, 2011, “ she noted. Kalpana said that First Step Home is always in need of things such as women’s personal care items. The organization also welcomes volunteers who can do manicures, cut and style hair etc. They also always need volunteers to help with basic cooking skills and nutrition counseling. Leisure activity items such as games, puzzles, and books are also welcome. You may contact Kalpana directly at 513-221-4613, to discuss how you can help the organization.

Tools For Health by Tina Weisenberger The human body is a miraculous creation capable of keeping us healthy when we give it the proper tools. The immune system is a very complex web of organ systems, cells and chemical signals that our body uses to maintain the structure and function of our bodies. It not only protects us from infections, but it also is responsible for repairing any damaged cells. A dysfunctional immune system is at the root of many diseases. There is a lot you can do to support your immune system. As any carpenter knows, you have to have the right tools to get the job done. The immune system is no different. We all know that proper nutrition, rest and exercise are essential, but sometimes this is easier said than done. Our lives have become more sedentary; and our nutrition is less of the Earth and more chemical laden. We must truly make an effort to be healthy. We are all looking for the magic pill. Although there is no magic pill, we can use nutritional supplements to augment our diets. Studies have shown that the vitamin content of our food has greatly declined over the last 50 years. The Journal of Complimentary Medicine in 2001 states that US and UK Government statistics show a decline in trace minerals of up to 76% in fruit and vegetables over the period 1940 to 1991. Evidence also shows that organic foods have a higher nutritional content so choose organic when available. A good multivitamin can do much to bridge the gap. Many vitamins and minerals play an important role in proper immune function. Vitamins A, C, and E are all essential for stimulating our immune cells and as antioxidants to protect our cells from damage by free radicals. Trace minerals selenium and zinc are also essential in maintaining health. Selenium is important in the development of white blood cells and thymus gland function. Zinc also important in many immune system functions and it also slows the growth of many viruses such as those that cause the common cold. Zinc lozenges can be useful at the first sign of a cold.

4

Dec / Jan 2011

Avoiding sugar is also important to keep the immune system strong. Studies have shown that 100 gram doses of any form of sugars (even orange juice), reduces the ability of immune cells to destroy bacteria and viruses by 50%. This effect lasts for more than 5 hours. Sorry Mary Poppins, I think we’ll skip that spoonful. Obesity and high cholesterol also have similar negative effects. Nature also provides us with some herbs to support us during times of illness. Many herbs have been shown to stimulate the immune system and some are also effective against bacteria, viruses and other organisms. The most commonly known immune supporting herb is Echinacea. Both Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea angustifolia stimulate activity of multiple immune cells including macrophages, T-cells, natural killer cells and neutrophils. Echinacea should not be taken long term as it can “burn out” the immune system. Astragalus membranaceus in a Chinese medicine herb. Studies in China have shown it to be effective in preventing the common cold. It also raises white blood cell counts. As with anything, prevention is the best medicine. Avoid smoking and alcohol, get plenty of rest and good nutrition –avoiding excessive fats and sugar in your diet, and exercise regularly. Consider a high potency multivitamin and mineral supplement, extra Vitamin C and add herbs when needed. Be well! Finding the Joy in Your World by Mary Claybon

The holiday season is considered the season of joy, yet how many people really cultivate joy in their lives? Joy is not something that simply appears. It has to be desired, noticed, and nurtured.

Often in our everyday lives we are too busy to experience joy. We have books like the Joy of Cooking, and the Joy of Sex, but what about the sheer joy of living every moment?

If you live your life in a robot sense, waking up in the morning, going about your morning routine, working at the ofďŹ ce or wherever you spend your day, eating dinner, running around with the kids and watching TV before you go to bed, only to start the robot routine all over again, you miss many opportunities for joy. They are there in your normal routine, but you have to notice.

Have you ever taken a walk and spent the entire time in conversation missing the natural scenery that is all around? Last week I took a morning power walk in Sharon Woods with a friend, and had to remind myself to look around and notice the beauty of autumn colors and the crunch of leaves beneath my feet. As we were walking, there appeared a large Buck with antlers crossing our path. He stopped to notice us, and then scampered into the woods. The important thing is we all noticed and there was something joyful about experiencing this moment.

Some people lack routine, so rather than living like a robot, they simply put one foot in front of the other, confront challenges that come up, and feel fortunate to have lived another day. Even when life is full of challenges, there are still moments to smile about and times of joy. Sometimes all it takes is to remember our spiritual practice, or simply to be kind.

words Thank you on the other. I thought they would add to my Thanksgiving table by putting one at each place setting. My husband started fussing about the cost, 25 cents each, and the frivolity of the purchase. I said, “ Don’t take away my joy. I am only spending $5.00 and it will add so much to the table. “ Although we had differing opinions of how to add joy to the holiday, we were able to enjoy this moment together and agree it would add something nice to the table. We can choose whether to experience joy in the moment or to find fault with some element of the event. Which do you do? Do you look for the joy or look for the one thing to ruin the moment. Do you pay attention to what is around you? Do you listen to rich conversations? There are ways to keep joy in your life, but it is up to you to cultivate it. As the holidays approach remember all the things you have to notice and smile about and share the feeling of joy with others. Happy Holidays! U niversal Prayer for Celebration

by Rev.David Mahen Let us open our hearts to light so that we may express our love each day. We lift the shadowy veil that would wrap our minds in the past gone by or the future yet to be. Within each moment we have the opportunity to choose love over anger, joy over sadness, and gratitude over greed. We choose to create and celebrate each new day. As we forget the past that no longer exists to stay present in the present. Add to our unconditional love of our fellow beings the love that emanates from the source of all things, from the creative power of the universe. For we are co-creators in all that is and all that will be. Let us love the Earth who supports and sustains us; who holds us in her protective loving care; who protects us from the cold vacuum of space; who shields us from the atomic fire of our sun. We shall celebrate each new day in gratitude for the gifts of life, light, and love. We shall share our gifts with those willing to receive them and graciously accept all that comes our way. So it is, it is done. Thank you, I love you, Forgive me, I’m Sorry Rev. David Mahen is a Universal Life Minister, Life Coach, and Energy Healer who resides in Wilmington Ohio.

Fit as a Fiddle

Health & Nutrition

Infra-red Sauna What is it? Infrared heat is a completely safe form of naturally occurring energy that heats the body by a process called direct light conversion. Direct light conversion warms only the body and does not raise the temperature of the surrounding free air. Infrared heat provides many of the health benefits of natural sunlight without any of the dangerous effects of solar radiation.

•Skin Beautification - The sauna allows increased blood circulation to carry great amounts of nutrients to the skin, thus promoting healthy tone and texture. The sauna also provides a mild cleansing of the skin. •Improved Immune System - Heat has a positive effect on the immune system. A sauna treatment in the early stages of a cold or flu has been known to stop the disease before the symptoms occur.

In the infrared sauna, the body perspires and receives all of the healthy benefits but avoids the harmful and extremely hot air of a traditional steam sauna.

Get your Fit as a Fiddle Wellness Rewards card, every time you make a purchase, we will mark your card. When you have 10 purchases, turn in your card and receive a 25% off a shopping spree certificate, this certificate is valid for regular priced items or for Infrared sauna sessions. Fit as a Fiddle is easy to find, located at 640 Columbus Ave. in Lebanon, Ohio 45036, Call 513-228-0222 for more information

•Better Circulation and Increased Energy - The sauna energy that is absorbed by human cells, causing a physical phenomenon called “resonance”. Thus the cellular activities are instantly invigorated, resulting in a better blood circulation and an overall improved metabolism.

Baker Chiropractic

What are the benefits?

•Weight Loss - The sauna can aid in weight loss by speeding up the metabolic process of vital organs and endocrine glands resulting in caloric loss in a sauna heat session. •Cardiovascular Health - The sauna increases heart rate and blood circulation, crucial to maintaining one’s health. The heart rate increases as more blood flow is diverted from the inner organs towards the extremities of the skin, without heightening blood pressure. •Speed Recovery from Injuries - The sauna heat stimulates blood vessels, bringing oxygen to joints and extremities, speeding the healing of sprains and strains, thus relieving pain and reducing the time it takes the human body to recover from an injury •Detoxification - The quicker metabolic rate causes extra toxic waste products to be purged from the body through the skin, during perspiration. •Stress Reduction & Relaxation - The sauna treatment before a massage also helps prepare a client by creating an overall relaxing effect. It loosens the muscle tissue so the therapist can do a more thorough and effective massage.

Testimonial with Sandy Mazuk

My lower back really started bothering me in February of this year (I thought I pulled something when I moved into my new house.) WRONG! My family Doctor gave me muscle relaxers, pain pills, and anti inflammatory. After a week or two with NO relief, he changed the medications around and I was still receiving NO relief. I was in complete agony for almost three months. A co-worker told me about Dr. Baker. I called that day, May 3, 2010 and got in that same day. After reviewing my x-rays, I found out I had many problems (not from my move) subluxation, degeneration, and pinched nerves in my lumbar. Along with all of that my hips were off! I have to admit, the first three weeks of coming here were very difficult. I really did not know if I could continue but what kept me going were the stories that I was hearing from other patients

while I was waiting to get adjusted. It is amazing how many people Doc has done wonders for. After three weeks of coming three times a week I started having relief. Here it is four months later and I am so glad that I did not give up on Doc. I feel so much better, sure I have some days with a little discomfort but when that happens I just add an extra day that week to get adjusted. (I am now down to once a week!)

You will not find any other Doctor office like this one. Everyone truly is there to help everyone. They are caring, friendly, and just all around great people. Thanks to Dr. Baker, Jennifer, Danielle, Krista, Courtney, and Chris.

A couple of weeks ago I had an asthma attack. I was skeptical on where to go. It was either my asthma specialist (which was closing in 45 minutes) or go to Dr. Baker’s. Danielle said, “Come here, come here!” So off to Dr. Baker’s office I went. I had already used an emergency inhaler and it did not work and I started to panic which is not a good thing with asthma! While at Doc’s I received EMS, roller bed, and then a massage. Massage? For asthma? I said. I trusted Doc with his recommendations and after my massage with Chris and then an adjustment with Doc my lungs were totally opened! I really was amazed but I should have known he could help me, after all that’s why Doc wanted to grow up and be Chiropractor. He had asthma as a child.

Winter Bliss by Charley Sky Well here we are, once again at winters doorstep. Being a summer baby, as my regular readers well know, leaves me a little cold regarding wintertime, pun intended. But, I will remedy this as I do every winter. I will fly to Jamaica till spring. But not in the literal sense, in reality I will once again create the environment of year round summer in my mind. When I was a young boy and complained about the cold, my father used to say; “Son, you are making yourself colder with your thinking. What I do, he said, is imagine palm trees and a warm ocean breeze, and before long, I feel warmer.” At the time I thought this was absurd. But over the years I have noticed how well this seems to work for him. He is now eighty seven years of age and seems to endure the winter weather as well as he did at sixty. It takes effort in my case. Dad has an edge on me, but I see myself as a work in progress. I have found that visualizing palm trees does makes a difference. I know it sounds bizarre, but hey, don’t take my word for this, give it a try. Since I am a single guy, I also throw in some pretty hula dancers. I am not beyond using a cheap gimmick that will produce results. By the time I throw in a beach scene, a beautiful sunset, a tall glass of fresh lemonade and some ukulele music, why it is almost like July. So, you may see me Christmas shopping at the mall, dressed in my winter coat. But, know that in my mind, there is no coat, or mall for that matter. I am strolling along the beach in one of my Hawaiian shirts, stopping at small friendly outdoor markets, to do a little shopping. Needless to say, I wish all of you a very happy holiday season. I hope with all my heart that you find great joy in the season. Remember, winter bliss is all around you. Enjoy the wonder and beauty of your life. Take time to enjoy your family and friends, for these are the greatest of all the miracles in your life. And please, make darn sure that you keep your hand firmly on the wheel when you drive by the guy in the Hawaiian shirt and Bermuda shorts. Ignore the hula dancers, and pretend the white sand he is walking on

10

is only a light dusting of snow. This will help you create the illusion of winter. Take care, be well and happy. I send peace and joy to each of you. Warm regards, Charley Sky email= icandoitmind@aol.com

Celebrate & Enjoy by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger

December and January are the months Americans set aside to celebrate and enjoy time with our loved ones. We have rituals around sharing food and abundance with one another. We make a point of enjoying ourselves, indulging ourselves in some cases (just one more piece of pumpkin pie, I’ll do an extra 10 minutes on the treadmill on Monday, etc.) Here in the Midwest, it may also be the human version of what the squirrels do at this time of year they uncover all the buried nuts and other choice tidbits, gorge themselves on what they can eat, and stuff the rest in their nests for the cold winter ahead. For those of us who have yards, it is also the time of year when we conduct our yearly ritual of cleaning up leaves and getting outside ready for winter. Since I’ve been outside doing a fair amount of that, I’ve had the opportunity to observe our horses and their

12

antics as the winter approaches. They have given me a whole new perspective on celebration and enjoyment that I’d like to share. Celebration has a lot of meanings depending on who you are talking with. For example, it could be a formal event such as a birthday party or as simple as sitting down to dinner with a loved one to celebrate an aniversary. I was outside one day, and observed the horse version of celebration. It was a beautiful, breezy fall day, and I saw my horse Cheyenne stick her head up, and break into a dead run from a standstill. Her pasture buddy Rohan was right behind her. She bucked, she squealed, she stopped, twirled, and ran in the opposite direction. Rohan reared, bucked, and pranced (he is after all a retired show horse, so he always does things with a touch of elegance). I have seen them run before when something startled

Dec / Jan 2011

or frightened them, but their body language did not indicate fear or anxiety. The horses did this for almost 15 minutes, and it was absolutely stunning to watch. The emotion I got from both of them was sheer joy. They were doing their celebration dance in honor of a beautiful day. I had another opportunity to experience things from the horse perspective this morning. I let both horses out of the barn, and they found a favorite spot, plopped down, and rolled. They did not just roll once and get up. They reveled in the experience. Rohan cannot roll all the way over, so he laid down, really ground himself into the dust (including his head), got up, laid down and did the same thing on the other side. He did this at least twice on each side, then got up, shot straight up in the air (all 4 feet off the ground simultaneously), then began calmly eating hay. Cheyenne, being a full figured, talented girl, can roll all the way over. She did so several times, grunting the whole time. While the logical part of me worried about colic, another part of me enjoyed watching this big creature wallow and snort and thoroughly enjoy herself. It occurred to me that because animals are so intimately connected with Earth and Nature, they are able to respond with honesty and clarity to simple things like a warm breezy day. They are able to truly bond with Mother by encasing themselves in Her. We often say that animals are “in the moment”, meaning that they are fully present at any given point in time. For animals such as horses, this is rooted in survival. Yet, our horses will lie down in the sun and take a nap for short periods of time. Cheyenne will lie flat out on her side and snore. Our dogs and cats love to lie in the sun outside and snooze too. As we humans prepare to spend time with our loved ones in celebration and enjoyment, perhaps we can take a lesson from our animals and attempt to be more present and in the moment. Perhaps our celebration is as simple as sharing how important someone is to us, our enjoyment is seeing them smile at us. Now, about that pumpkin pie I’m having tonite....never mind, I’ll go to the gym on Monday!

A gentle reminder for those who live with animals. Holidays can be stressful for animals as well as people. Be sure to talk with them, let them know why you aren’t home as much, that people are coming to visit. Allow animals who are shy or noise sensitive to retreat to a quiet area of the house. If you are considering bringing a new animal into your home, please WAIT until after the New Year when things are calmer. Enjoy the Holidays, be present to those you love and who love you, and make sure to take a moment to just enjoy the sun. Cindy & Terri and our 4 legged family

Researchers are still unsure exactly how hypnosis works, but regardless of its mechanisms, hypnosis has been found to help people control both the emotional and physical components of stress. In all this research there is not a single report of hypnosis ever causing any harm.

Many of you may believe that dealing with stress is hard or time consuming. This belief could not be further from the truth. Just a few minutes of destressing a couple of times a day can greatly decrease the ill effects that stress has on your health and your life in general. The best part of this easy to do daily exercises is that when you do these de-stressing techniques for just a short time they will automatically become a new healthy habit.

So let’s learn a way to take a “Mental Holiday” and start to decrease the amount of stress in your life. How you perceive a situation in your life is the key to opening new doors and allowing your thoughts to change and therefore changing stress levels in your life. One way to do this is through self-hypnosis. Selfhypnosis can be easily attained simply because we go in and out of hypnosis naturally every day of our lives. What I wish to show you in this article is how to do it on purpose.

If you respond with a negative thought every time something occurs in your life you create stress. Thinking in a certain way or about certain things which create stress responses can have the same ill effects as actually being in a stressful situation. When you start to choose thoughts that are stress-free you can bring yourself back into balance. Therefore, choosing your thoughts is at the core of creating a less stressful life or even becoming stress free.

Drawing on the same relaxation techniques that drive meditation, self-hypnosis helps you to relax your body, lets stress hormones subside, and distracts your mind from unpleasant thoughts. The relaxation achieved with self-hypnosis can be intense. Unlike meditation, the goal is not to be without thoughts but to produce thoughts that create feelings of calmness, happiness, excitement or any positive feeling that you desire.

For far too many years people have been taught to believe that in order to bring yourself back into balance you have to practice time consuming methods such as transcendental meditation, yoga, or prayer just to name a few. There are great benefits in all of these methods mentioned. However, you can also get great benefits by using techniques that engage the imagination and happen at the speed of thought. A proven helpful process is Hypnosis. Long considered a parlor trick, hypnosis is actually an altered state of consciousness achieved, in part, through relaxation,

First, find somewhere comfortable and quiet, where you can sit down, lie down or even stand. Begin with relaxing your body. A good way of doing this is to close your eyes and imagine waves of relaxation running down your body from your scalp downwards, washing out stress. Let the waves run in sync with your breathing, first washing down over your head, then your neck, then your torso, then arms, and finally your legs. Feel the muscles in your body relaxing as the waves of relaxation wash over them. Imagine that with each breath that you exhale you release any stress, tension or anxiety that you are holding in your body.

Bright Chiropractic & Acupuncture Clinic The next step is to use suggestions to deepen the state of relaxation. This can be as simple as saying something to yourself like: “I am feeling relaxed and comfortable; with every breath that I exhale I am becoming more relaxed and more comfortable…” You may also choose to use the traditional approach of suggesting sleepiness: “I am tired and sleepy. I can feel the heaviness in my arms and legs. I am getting more and more tired…” Once you begin to feel relaxed, begin to imagine any scenario that you desire. This can be relaxing on a beach or mountain retreat. You could imagine doing something such as riding a bike or running on a forest trail. You may even imagine an event that has been creating stress in your life changing in a positive and rewarding way. The most important part of this is to choose the thoughts that produce the feeling you want to experience. I can not emphasize enough how important your imagination is in this process. You can spend any amount of time doing this; it could be as little as three minutes or as long as an hour. The more you practice this, the more rapidly relaxing will become a new habit and you will begin to see and feel the benefits of choosing your thoughts better. So start today and take a “Mental Holiday”.

Family Food Night by Cynthia M. Brown Over a year ago I began writing for this magazine and tried to begin a discussion about the importance of good food and our need to build relationships around food—relationships with our own families, our friends, and those folks who produce our food. I have challenged myself and Infinity readers to create a local foods night at home. I have asked you to support restaurants that support local farmers. I have asked farmers to tell their stories and I have shared some of my own struggles to be a conscious eater. As the year comes to an end, I have begun to look at this question again. The simple truth is we have to begin to talk about food. This nation is dying—we have childhood obesity, Type II diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol, cancer, and a myriad of food sensitivities and intolerances that have never plagued our people as they do now. Popular pundits have proclaimed that this will be the first generation of Americans who will not outlive their parents. In the richest country in the world, the country with the greatest natural resources and the greatest capacity for growing food, this is simply unacceptable. As I mentioned, I too struggle with the convenience issue and time when it comes to food. But, as I think on my life, growing up, my mother made all of our foods at home. Fast food was an extravagance and a treat or guilty pleasure. We did not drink a large quantity of sodas. We did not eat chips and other prepared snacks. My greatest exposure to fast food was the six years I worked in the industry. I actually like very little junk food. I am not much of a fan of pizzas either. I like fruits, vegetables, salads, meats etc. When I developed cancer all of my friends were shocked into silence. One said that if I could have cancer, no one was safe. She knew that I had been ordering organic foods from co-ops before organic was part of the shopping vocabulary of most people. When I became a chef, I sourced cheeses and vegetables from farmers before it was the thing to do. My doctors tell me that the largest part of developing cancer is simply random genetics and

16

after many years of reading, consulting and living as a survivor, I really believe that. Other lifestyle diseases, however, are much less dependent upon genetics. They are about choices and deciding what our time and health are really worth. I have begun looking at other family members who suffer from auto-immune diseases and chronic health issues. I have begun to ask if we are addressing the real issue. I do think that the industrial food complex is a major component to our ill health. Before monocrops, pesticides, industrial fertilizers, huge feedlots, genetically modified feeds, etc., people were a great deal healthier. I know, so much more is known about disease now that we have more disease because we can diagnose more, but there is more to it than that. In my family, where we were not raised on frozen, preformed meats, Happy Meals, shelf stable cartons, and instant foods, etc., why is there so much disease? We grew a good deal of our vegetables. We also bought all of our meats, grains, milk, eggs, beans etc. Most were from brand name companies growing on huge farms, using all that modern agriculture and science had to offer. Mother cooked all of our meals from scratch. Who knew that the raw ingredients themselves might turn out to be killers! So, I think we really are the victims of our own march toward the future. We have created this industrial food system and now we are all reaping the rewards of it. We have abundant, inexpensive food. The cost, though, is realized in poorer health and increased health costs. I know you have heard all of this before. The difference is that if you really start to do an inventory in your own family of those who have chronic health issues and examine their eating habits, it becomes very real in a very personal way. So, as we begin looking at the New Year, I think we must re-evaluate our relationship with food, not just where it is grown etc,. We have to look at what we eat and why. We must be willing to pay for good food. We must ask questions about the seed stock, the growing and harvesting conditions of the food we buy. We must ask if our health is really worth the time it takes to prepare real food at home. We must

Dec / Jan 2011

build money into our budget to pay the true cost of growing nutrient rich, safely grown foods. We must make time to prepare those foods in healthy ways for our families. I have several rules of good living when it comes to food. 1. Moderation in all things. 2. Sugar is not the enemy. Use natural sugars, honey, stevia, etc. 3. Flour is not the enemy. Use unbleached and whole grain flours. 4. Fat is not the enemy. Use high quality, omega-3 rich oils and eat small quantities of animal proteins.

refrigerator. Store some in the freezer. Reheat it in boiling water. Sure this all takes time. We have precious little of that. But, as someone who spent nine months visiting a chemotherapy lab and radiation therapy facility and who had to sleep 12-14 hours each day, my health is far too important to me. The few hours I spend each week preparing food is a small price to pay. Plus, I am giving my family the gift of healthier food and my time and energy to prepare it. And, who knows, family food night might unlock some secret talents in your family. Julia is gone and who knows, maybe someone you love might find their passion is food and become that next great chef with the common touch. Healthy Eating and Happy New Year.

5. Dairy is not the enemy. Make sure it is all-natural or organic with no growth hormones etc. 6. And butter is never the enemy. Julia Child said, “You won’t live longer without butter; it will just seem that way!” 7. With all things, go organic when possible and as natural as you can all the time. 8. Food is meant to be enjoyed from preparation through dinner. 9. Food is meant to be shared with those you love. 10. Food should nurture the whole person, body and soul. So, take a look at what you eat. Ask yourself where it comes from, and why you choose to buy that food, what are the true costs of that food in terms of production, processing, packaging and distribution. Make food at home. Gather the family and preprepare foods for the week. Make it a family activity every week. Make carrot sticks, celery sticks, radish chips, pepper strips, etc. Make and freeze soups, meatballs, casseroles. Cook and store pastas in the

Vanilla Bean

An Aromatic Spice

Vanilla is a very popular and pleasantly fragrant spice commonly known to add rich flavor to desserts and drinks, the scent of vanilla is widely used in candles, perfumes and lotions as well. Vanilla beans come from tropical orchids, grown in countries like Madagascar, Indonesia and Mexico. To produce about three teaspoons of vanilla extract, one fermented bean must be cultivated and harvested, this explains why it seems more expensive than most spices. The benefits of vanilla are astounding, the extract contains antioxidant properties that can protect the body from disease and damage. Amounts of B-complex and traces of minerals are found in vanilla extract which can benefit our nervous system function and regulate metabolism. Essential oil of vanilla has been known to help with depression, lower blood pressure and with its soothing and tranquilizing

18

effect on the brain, you will experience a sound sleep. Vanilla has often been used to aid in discomforts of the stomach, it offers great relief to an upset stomach and it is safe to use for pregnancy. It only takes just a few drops in your favorite herbal tea or a glass of water. Vanilla fights off inflammation, can reduce fever and is also used as an anti-allergenic. There are many healthy benefits of vanilla, researchers are still finding ways this spice can be helpful and it is so easy to use everyday. There are several types of vanilla, do not use the imitation if possible, real vanilla extract or beans are the best. Bourbon vanilla beans made in Madagascar Island are considered some of the highest quality available. Vanilla is a wonderful spice to share with those special people in your life, not just for the Holidays, but throughout the whole new year!

Energy Healing

for Self and Others by David Mahen

Four Techniques you can use now to heal self and others Have you ever wanted to quickly shake off a cold or flu? Or quickly stop a toothache or headache or other pain? You can, and it’s so easy! We start with breathing technique. Air adds or subtracts energy. When we take in too little air we gasp and struggle for breath. Without air, we don’t live. When we take in more air, we boost our vibration and our available energy. The first technique is to breathe deep belly breaths continually through any healing attempt. There are complete healing systems based on breath alone, but I am going to add more techniques to get you started.

Rev. David Mahen is a Certified Quantum Touch Practitioner and Instructor. He teaches Quantum Touch energy healing in small hands-on classes, and has private, group, and distance healing sessions.

The next technique to add is to notice and be aware of your vibration and energy in your hands. Hands are natural emitters of energy. If you ever watched the movie “The Karate Kid” or “The DaVinci Code” you will have seen hands on healing, but without explanation. During a healing session, you breathe and place your hands ever so lightly on where it hurts or where a problem is known. Be sure to ask permission and to respect private areas. The third technique to add is intention. It is well known that “Where thoughts go, energy flows.” Intentions set the tone and quality of our thoughts. So when you set out to heal, focus and intend to heal. Put away and doubts or concerns on what you are doing. Create your intention to lessen the pain and heal the condition. Include in your intention a knowing that healing occurs, and a detachment from outcome. Keep in mind that when you are healing with energy, you are channeling pure and unconditional love for the highest good of yourself and the person you work with. The final technique is to take your time. Sometimes pain goes away quickly and other times not. A headache may be gone in five or ten minutes, but a chronic condition like carpal tunnel may take several sessions of 30 minutes. Practice, practice, practice and you will see healing miracles.

Cancer - A New Concept by Paul F. Fulk,

D.C., F.A.S.A. Why do Mediterranean people have a very low incidence of cancer? It might just be that they consume a phytochemical known as oleuropein found in the olive leaf extract which has been shown to eliminate cancer tumors in 9-12 days. Cancer cures around the world number more than twenty five. The Hunza people in the Himalaya Mountains eat and drink a diet that does not allow cancer to exist. It is non-existent in their society and their life span ranges in the hundreds. They have no drugs and 80 percent of the foods they eat are grown in the sun. The only meats they eat are fish and fowl plus they eat eight almonds a day which contain vitamin B17. Cancer does not exist in their society. The general public just does not see or hear about these cures because the FDA does not permit them to be manufactured and sold in the United States. Herbal remedies are not patentable. Unless the drugs or any chemical remedy can be patented, the big Pharmaceutical companies are not interested in the product. The billions of dollars that have been spent to find the cure for cancer by the American Cancer Society in the 75 years that I have been around has not turned up a single remedy that will, without question, cure the CAUSE of cancer. Yes, there is chemotherapy, but the cure ratio with chemo is very poor. Interesting enough Dr. Tullio Simoncini of Rome, Italy, stated that “Cancer is a Fungus” and wrote a book by the same title which I have . He treated many forms of cancer very successfully by treating the Cancer, whether it is breast, lung, colon or prostate. In fact I quote from his book on page 82 “after many years of disappointed expectations in oncology we should firmly discard the matrix as the cause of cancer.” In other words he said that the orthodox treatment of cancer should be abandoned. Chemo therapy only wipes out the cells that actually give our body the ability to fight foreign organisms. Our whole immune system is depleted via chemo

22

therapy. It just does not make any sense to wipe out your fighting system to cure a problem. Dr. F. C. Odds from England discovered some years ago that there were 150 forms of Candida Albicans which is a symbiotic bacterium that belongs in the small intestine. Its function is the absorption of “B” vitamins. Practically every organ in our body needs “B” vitamins, particularly the liver, eyes, and adrenal glands. Without their functions we will not survive. It would be like driving an automobile without an accelerator pedal. This might be what we call the “chronic fatigue syndrome.” The causative factor is the use of antibiotics and steroids that are consumed orally whether it is a prescription or in the foods we eat. Antibiotics and steroids are added to the food of the animal meat we are eating. As long as there is food for candida albicans to feed on in the blood stream, you can’t get it out of the blood and back into the small intestine. One of the things that Dr. Nieper taught me was, “you have to get the food out of the blood stream that candida is feeding on.” Candida Albicans only feeds off dead undigested protein that never got digested in the stomach. Some literature today states that it feeds off of carbohydrates. This is not true. It is a saprophytic bacteria that by definition feeds on undigested protein. What I have observed through the Dark field microscope, which allows one to see live activity Candida Albican buds literally tear the walls of white and red blood cells apart which dumps the contents of the WBC’s back into the blood component. This produces a lot of toxicity in the blood. Not only that, but by depleting the number of red and white blood cells, the cause for lymphomas and leukemia is explained. Our white blood cells are our fighters and therefore when gone, we have no fight left. My theory is that viruses hiding out somewhere in the body are now able to run rampant causing the cancers to exist because there is no interferon to catch the viruses. Our body needs certain nutritional components to make interferon. For those who have developed cancer, apparently are missing the needed ingredients to make interferon in our body. This is my theory and has not been sanctioned by the FDA.

Dr. Royal Rife in the twenties and thirties discovered the viruses that caused cancer. A few years ago I spent a day with the assistant to Dr. Rife, John Crane, who had been with Dr. Rife in the lab for twenty years, who confirmed his discoveries to me. Definitely proving it was a virus that causes the many forms of cancer. Dr. Rife had developed a microscope that was able to view virus activity in a live form.. Whereas the electron microscope that is generally in use today destroys whatever you are looking at because of the intensity of the light that is used. Dr. Rife also found that certain sound frequencies would kill the viruses that caused cancer. Yet his method for treating cancer has never been approved by the FDA. Dr. Hans Nieper from Hanover, Germany, taught me how they have treated patients for the last fifty years. He explained how to get Candida Albicans out of the blood stream and back into the small intestine. By stopping the destruction of the white and red blood cells, the immune system which involves the spleen, thymus and adrenal glands are preserved. By producing interferon in between the cells, the viruses are trapped so that the macrophages (WBCs) can literally come to the trapped virus site and eat it up and then take it to the lymphatic cells to be eliminated. Our body operates almost the same way a spider does that makes a web to catch a fly. It has to make the web before it can catch and eat the fly. Interferon is our web to catch the virus so it can be eliminated. This may be a preventative to colds as well, and possibly cancer. Consider the fact that colds and flu are viruses. There is a custom made product that will help the body make interferon called Parasine that is sold by ParaHealth Foods Inc. in Dayton, Ohio. Phone number 937-434-8066. Copyright 2010 Paul F. The Magic of the Season! by Kathy Vaske

As we get busy in our daily lives, and rush to get all the millions of things done that seem so important, let us not forget, it is always about our intention and our energy we share with others that actually brings the magic of the season about. Those of us that give little consideration to all the hard work, effort and countless hours, put into all the decorating and baking that goes into the family and social functions we attend, let us give a little something back this season, and extend a helping hand to the person that creates so much joy in our own life. Maybe we can get a couple of people together to help take down all the decorations, and help pack them neatly away for next year’s celebration. Sometimes the clean up the day after the big celebration is greatly appreciated. There is always something we can do to show we care. If there are people in your own life this season that usually do all the entertaining for the rest of the family, that have found themselves sick, or incapacitated in some way, be sure to check in on them frequently and maybe take them a small treat and do a short visit. Let them know they have not been forgotten. Those of us that are the ones that usually do all the hard work to be sure that our family and

24

friends have a magical holiday season, let us remember to allow others that offer to help, to do just that. Doing the preparation work together, can be the most fun of all. It gives us an excuse to brings friends and family together in a more relaxed setting, and gives everyone a chance to really get involved in the holiday spirit, not just the overspending on gifts that can make anyone a little cranky. Try creating a little magic this season of your own, for someone special that you hold dear in your heart. There are lots of the smaller businesses and many of the larger ones as well, that do something special for their customers during the holidays. This holiday season, why not call that special friend or family member, and seek out a fun special outing, at one of your favorite places to go. It doesn’t have to be pricey or time consuming, to get a little lift to your spirit and take a short break from the holiday rush. Don’t forget to purchase a little something special for yourself this holiday season, and remember to choose presents for others that are special, not things that break the bank for the rest of the year. Too late to shop? Try picking up a gift certificate and a unique envelope for it at one of their favorite places, it will always be just the right size and appreciated.

Inspiring Stories of Divine Intervention

Back by popular demand! This feature has inspired many, and we ask you to send us a short story about something that happened in your life that inspired you. A situation in your life that changed you and that you believe happened with divine intervention. An angelic experience or simply a profound feeling you had that changed your path of direction. We will publish a story in each issue, as we receive them. Please type or print. You do not need to put your whole name and please give a phone number in case we need to reach you if we have a question. The phone number will not be published. Email to jphil@sednamarketing. net or mail to: Infinity magazine, 1710 Maplewood Dr. Lebanon, Ohio 45036 The next issue is February / March; Infinity must receive your story by January 10th. Below is an actual event that inspired this individual.

One Single Act of Kindness It was the time of year where the Holidays were approaching and everyone was busy with shopping, decorating, baking and work. Juggling everything was always a challenge, but sometimes we all get a little bit too rushed and stressed. We forget about the little things sometimes, and can make what could be a costly mistake. It was a typical crazy day and I was driving to my bank and decided to get some cash from the ATM, the man in front of me was just leaving. When I drove up to the machine, there big as day was his ATM card, still in the machine. I pulled it out and saw him driving past me slowly down the adjacent street. I quickly thought I could catch him, why I thought I could, I don’t know, it seems silly to me now. Of course, by the time I got on the same street, I had lost sight of his van. I had almost reached home by now and I thought I will look and see if his name is in the phone book first, because you could read his name on the back of his card clearly. I quickly found my phone book and looked the name

up and found it very easily, I dialed the number, a man answered. I told him who I was and that I had his card that he left in the ATM machine. He was so grateful and asked if I could meet him. I met him that night, he thanked me and offered me money. I did not take it saying to him with a smile, you never know when I might be in a position and need someones help. He thanked me again and drove off. A couple weeks or so passed and I am at the ATM machine again, someone is in front of me, so I am quickly running through my mind, the things I needed to get done, I had a really hectic week ahead and I was getting ready to take care of business details. The car left in front of me, so I drove up to the ATM machine. I could not believe my eyes! Sure enough, the person in front of me had left their card in the machine again! I sat there a little stunned for a second or two, I took out the card and I quickly drove to the drive thru window and explained to a teller what had just happened and they took the person’s card and said they would contact them and thanked me for turning it in. Again, I headed my car back out of the bank and while on my way, I was thinking, how weird, that this had happened to me again and so soon. Time had passed and I did not think of these two incidents really ever again, until... One day I had a busier day than usual and I was out and about in my car when I made a stop to run into a store to exchange a book. I had laid the book down next to my purse on the passenger side. Little did I know, that I had thrown my purse in the car earlier and my ATM card had slipped out and somehow had slipped between the pages of the book. I went on my merry way and thought everything was just fine until I needed to get some fuel and reached for my card and could not find it. It was a terrible sinking feeling, I looked inside the car and my purse what seemed like

a hundred times and finally I called the bank and told them to cancel it.

to renew love for self, faith in the quiet innate “voice inside” that always knows your life direction.

To my amazement, the person on the other end of the phone informed me that someone had just called and said they have it and it is in safe keeping until I come back and get it.

If you love, love to the best of your ability. When you play, be PASSIONATE about your life. Passion gives us energy. Universal laws never change, sometimes we just interpret them to our needs. Love what you don’t like to do, even better, love what you do love to do.

I was so thankful and still could not believe that someone had turned it in. I remember feeling touched by one single act of kindness, and it warmed my heart. I felt as if an angel was watching over me that day. My Mom always told me, if you do something good for someone, good will come back to you, she was right. - Ashley Conley

I Am the Wind,

Many internal battles are won faster by resolving our differences about them. All of us are linked together like the lines in our face or hands. Our experiences link our lives together. It is our destiny. When man is suppressed by tyranny; all of us feel the pain. Our futures blend together. All levels of understanding, responsibilities, laughter and tears, are all connected. Bring your insight “inside-out.” Come out to play! There is power in faith. Honor the child in all of us.

I Am the Sun by Ráven

Children have a deepened recess of anticipation. Anticipation is the root of all enthusiasm. It’s purpose is to unfold from the seed of our new beginning. Some beginnings for a soul are decisive. Beginnings may be divided, unscheduled dilemmas, but intrinsically a child knows only that he or she needs to be loved and sheltered from the wrongs of the world. As a child, I remember talking to the wind. A “never alone” presence resonated within me. I knew that I was the wind, the rain connection, the sun and the tree. All of this was part of me. As years passed into memories, the constant, the perpetual sense of peacefulness came from the source within. Pain, loss of any kind is acknowledged by the opportunity to surrender parts of issues or dogmas that do not or will not help us in the outcome. Changes are made available to us for better direction. If you are stuck because of any kind of loss, it is required

Astrology by Mary

Sagittarius November 22–December 21

You are looking ahead with gusto, as the new moon on Dec. 5, and Mars in Sag in the first week, gives a real push forward. The full moon just before Christmas highlights travel or discussions with significant others and/or business partners. Neptune, planet of imagination and fantasy, lends some dreams and anticipation to late Sagittarians. In matters of family, home and parents there are unsettling situations, which have been going on awhile. It is erratic and not permanent. Your major emphasis right now is in the personal money house. There are undeniable responsibilities here, and possibly long-term payment programs showing up. Sag likes to do more, have more, and be more. Any effort to become a bit more realistic will pay off and keep you from the typical excesses. But not to worry. Your ruling planet, Jupiter, always seems to turn the tide in your favor!

g

Capricorn December 21 – January 19

Early Caps are in for some serious renovations in terms of self awareness. You will look back on this in a few years, and realize that this is one of the most significant periods of your whole life. Your willingness to be responsible is your magic key. It will open many doors. Possibly you even now recognize serious obligations in career, family matters, parent figures, even siblings. Solar Capricorns have a very creative and artistic mind set, which is undoubtedly why some of them become very famous. The universe is hinting that you need to reorganize home base and clear out lots of stuff that has been accumulating. The new you doesn’t need all that baggage. You realize it has served its purpose, but is no longer necessary for your survival. The solar eclipse on January 4 will set the tone for this next round of activity. We applaud you!

h

Aquarius January 19 – February 18

Neptune is about to wrap up a long 14-year stay in Aquarius. Both the planet and the sign are imaginative and inspirational. But dreams without muscle won’t manifest in this plane. That is why you are putting in a lot of hard work behind the scenes in order to “anchor” your imagination. Some are drawn to alternative healing methods, others to developing their psychic awareness. Retrograde Mercury in December has you going back to work even harder. You have friends (of course) who are encouraging you to take the time to work on those goals. The full moon eclipse right before Christmas is helping you to see the potential in your efforts. You are having a “clean out the closet” impulse as you move into the new year, and are now aware that the Universe is looking to you to bring in the Aquarian Age with grace and honor. If you need more schooling, then go for it!

Pisces February 18 – March 20

As the old year fades away, Pisces is now aware that they have been awakened over the last 5 to 6 years to talents they were dimly aware of, but reluctant to pursue. Early December you accept that your future plans must be addressed. The last elements of worry and uncertainty will leave as the year fades away, and on the horizon will be a whole new beginning. There may be unsettled conditions around home and family that will come to a head. Some financial matters will require that you get a bit more clear about what you can and cannot do with your money. Your tendency is to give it all away, but now there are requirements to be a bit more realistic. Perhaps you will seek some advice from financial professionals. The eclipse on January 4 will provide the much-needed groundwork for future plans. Older friends, or parents, may be supportive.

^

Aries March 20 – April 19

The new moon on Dec. 5 will look exciting and may suggest travel or good news. Just don’t get impatient. Read the whole contract. Much of the planetary energy right now focuses on your professional image, your career matters, and very possibly parent figures, or your own role as a parent. There are whispers coming from a few planets that may suggest you just escape the whole thing. For a month or so, this will feel very unsettling (if it already hasn’t felt that way), but a new day is coming! Mid way in January you will begin to feel the winds of change. But right now bite the bullet and do the homework (which you may have been putting off). Don’t let your natural impatience with current events ruin the promise of next year. Do the “due diligence” thing, and when success comes around the corner you will know that you are superbly prepared.

Gemini May 20 – June 21

Your ruling planet, Mercury, goes retrograde in mid December. You may be reviewing your financial situation with a partner, and when Mercury goes forward at New Years, you will feel excited about some new prospects. The major part of these 2 months will be focused on the income/outgo area of life, and while it is annoying to Gemini to have to stay so focused, you will do it…because you have to! For all birthdays here, the area of creativity, children, and romance is gearing up for serious pleasure. Some may renew a romance from by-gone years, and some may find that their children are having children. What a lovely gift! Late Gemini birthdays will enjoy some inspirational gifts from the spirit realm, which could lead to a new sense of literary skills, and if pursued will mature nicely in a year or so. The lunar eclipse on Dec 21 could bring you a clue as to this talent.

a

Cancer June 22-July 22

Because you are ruled by the mysterious moon, which changes quickly, your moods are always changing rapidly. And a total lunar eclipse is coming in on Dec. 21 at the beginning of your sign, which signals a recognition on your part that you have spent many years in frustrating relationships. But now, with the aid of several transiting planets seriously moving in the relationship house, you may find that the right one is just around the corner. It would not be surprising if that someone is older, or you have known before. Also this brings the potential for increasing the family unit. The solar eclipse on January 4 will help you to see this pattern unfolding. You know you have a lot of love to give, but you also need support from that certain other. You just may be looking at the always- present issue of balancing partnership with parenthood. The likelihood of some surprises in the money department could show up in mid January. So hang on to some of that Christmas money, just in case!

b

Leo July 22 – August 22

The first few weeks of December will find you in a holiday mood. Then the retrograde Mercury in mid December will represent a brief period of checking out the job issues with extra labor. Then in early January, Mercury goes back to fun and games for you. However, the major pattern right now is in your work area. You have to deal with the powers that be: the ones who make the rules. The work area is being overhauled. You can’t fight city hall, so bend to their wishes. Take the time to watch your own health patterns. You may have been feeling for some time that money is going out like water through a sieve. Some of you gave because you really care, but that condition will soon be shifting. In January there will a brief preview of coming attractions, which for you will be excellent. So content yourself through the holidays with what must be done. Your star is rising!

c

Virgo August 22 – September 22

The moon in early December will see much movement in and out of the home. You may travel to see family, or they travel to see you. This will be very clear by the full moon on Dec.21. Saturn, the planet of serious intentions, is in your pocketbook, and while you are very careful with money, there will be necessary expenses coming up, probably because of partnership. A fun area for you is beginning to open up. This would be about romance, recreation, creativity, children, etc. You could just be getting serious about

Infinity

someone. As usual, you will take your time. Perhaps it is someone you have known for a long time, or even someone older. The best gift would be if it is someone you can work with and play with! The new moon in early January will be a clue.

d

Libra September 22 – October 23

Well Libra, it’s your turn to stand up in front of the big teacher, Saturn. Saturn is not as scary as some people think. He just asks us to get real about our lives and fix our problems wherever we may find them. Since Libra is all about relationships, equality, fairness, etc. then you are asking yourself if what you have in your life is balanced. Since it shows up in your first house of “me”, then just take a good, clear look at whether you are being fair to yourself and/ or the significant others. To complicate this, matters having to do with family, parents, and housing are being completely reorganized. This is the very familiar “parents vs. partners” problem that seems to be more present than ever. The solar eclipse on January 4 will start the ball rolling for this issue. For later Librans, you and /or your children are finding the fulfillment of all your dreams. The requirement here is just to be honest with self.

e Scorpio

October 23 – November 21

In December, my friend, you are charming the birds out of the trees! Your magnetism abounds. In January there is a focus on money. You just may have some to throw around! Early in the New Year you may find yourself on a learning spree, either for fun or necessity The political structure is expecting you to deliver the facts, and, detective that you are, that is a simple matter for you. (Yes, I know. It takes time.) Some may find that siblings have some serious problems. Your partner’s job may be very taxing and be wearing them out. Speaking of health, it would be wise for you to simply have a checkup. The Scorpio belief system that they are invincible can overlook some physical issues. Do yourself (and your spouse) a favor and let the doctor give you a “once over”. The lunar eclipse on Dec. 21 says you have been concentrating for some time on the money coming in/ going out. This effort is peaking, and will be replaced by some brand new programs.
