L etter from the editor Dear Readers, Love remains in its truest form of language not spoken. The soul is defined and shaped in Love’s identity. The depth of the heart connection is felt on every level. Passions flow and heal the very existence of the spirit, Love can unite and ignite the flame from one human being to another, in essence every living thing. Love is created by expression of thought, kindness and integrity of the mind, it is the lightness that shines eternal for everlasting Love to even exist. Step forward, be not afraid to experience the divine power of Love. To be in Love is like hearing for the first time music composed from the depth of your soul. Without Love, the spirit may falter and scramble, and attach to anything or anyone that resembles the art of Love. Be generous to all living creatures, Love will be abundant and sometimes catch you by surprise! It is in knowing when true Love is at your door, for there is no fear to open it and let it in. The nature of Love begins much like a rose, beginning with one single rosebud, blooming slowly until it is bursting in full bloom with beauty and all its glory! Love just happens, it is never forceful or demanding, flowing much like an endless stream. The miracle of Love heals even the deepest wounds and connects us all to an unbinding truth that we must give of ourselves in order to receive. Bless those who recognize the simplicity of Love. Do not deny yourself to be filled with Love, peace and harmony reside in the house of Love. Do not search for Love, it is there in every turn, it is soft as a gentle breeze. Love can be seen in a glance, a smile, a tender touch. It is heartfelt and seen through the eyes of the beholder. May Love bloom all around you, comfort and soothe you. The melody of Love is the song unrehearsed, with every precious beat of your heart, let Love sustain you and keep you in rhythm for the rest of your life. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Yours in health,

The above Haiku encapsulates the essence of a revitalized movement better known as, community gardening. As the price of living steadily rises, citizens from all walks of life are looking for ways to stretch their dollar. Additionally, most of us have become aware of the need to live healthier and more simple lifestyles. In an age where individualism seems to dominate, many are reaching out for ways to reconnect with their fellowman, as well as mother earth. Community gardening meets needs for all of the above, creating opportunities for communities to join together for the common welfare of all. Growing food not only brings people together, but also reconnects us with soil, the origins of our food. Few activities bridge the gap between young and old like community gardening, because it is an activity that almost anyone can enjoy, no matter what age, race, gender or level of ability. We have seen that community gardens are a great way to serve those in need, by providing nutritious produce for food pantries that may otherwise have access to exclusively boxed, bagged, canned and processed foods. Such gardens can be built on vacant lots within inner city communities or in suburban neighborhoods. Outward focused garden endeavors provide an opportunity to work with those in need, and help to provide a sense of purpose to everyone involved. Many life lessons can be gained from community gardening efforts such as: cooperation, the joy of servitude, patience and the understanding that persistence pays. Gardening is one of the least expensive and most affective forms of mind, body and spirit therapy. We can empower ourselves and our community when we work together to cultivate hope, health and holistic living through edible gardening. continued on pg. 4

Community gardens plant seeds of peace wherever they sprout. What better way to say, “I love you just because you are” than by sharing delicious homegrown produce with someone in need? Such gardens also provide opportunities to teach the importance of sustainable and organic gardening for the health of our land, ourselves and future generations. For all inquiries and information on ways to get involved in community gardening, please contact us at, 513-9323319, email us at wes@marvinsorganicgardens.com, or visit us online at www.marvinsorganicgardens.com or fan us on Facebook. Should You Become a
Professional Hypnotist? by William Molitor, BCH, CI
In our evolving economy it has become crucial to remain on the leading edge of your profession. Medical, psychological and even professions such as rehabilitation and sports enhancement, at every level, have seen an increase in the use of hypnosis. The concept that you can train and specialize in the field of hypnosis is now a reality. The term “Lay-Hypnotist” is an old and outdated term used only by those few whose knowledge of hypnosis remains in the 19th century. In today’s workforce we are known as “Professional Hypnotists”. As with many other professions such as Occupational Therapy, Nursing, Counseling even Psychology they began with the label of “Lay-persons”. Through training these fields graduated into becoming highly recognized professions. This is also the case with the profession of Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy. As the profession of Hypnosis continues to develop and establish itself along side the more “mainstream” professions, it is anticipated by many that it will follow the course of other such professions. All of the above mentioned occupations and many others were once the domain of another profession such as medicine. Over a period of time and through specialization and training, “Laypersons” developed into licensed professionals of their own.
4
At the present time, there is no legally recognized body managing national licensure of the Hypnosis profession. Currently, the largest hypnosis organization is the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH), who registers individuals as Certified Hypnotists after they have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of training either through one of their Certified Instructors or through another organization that has a reciprocal agreement with the NGH. The NGH will only set up such reciprocity when a school or hypnosis organization has shown that it can educate and evaluate (test) students for graduation that meet at least the minimum standards set up by the NGH. Licensed professionals such as physicians, psychologists, counselors, social workers, nurses and many others come to our Center to be trained in hypnosis. What seems to be a common denominator among these helping professionals is that they have a genuine desire to help their clients when other more “main stream” approaches have failed or have had limited success. These professionals, due partly to the increase in positive media exposure and the public demand of hypnosis, want to study hypnosis and become certified. The majority of people that I have trained however, upon completion of training and receiving their certification, find themselves using their hypnotic skills in a general practice. This approach is very successful because hypnotists, no matter what their specialization may be, tend to use the very same hypnotic tools such as Inductions, Hypnotic Suggestions, Visualization and even Hypnotic Age Regression. Some hypnotists may also choose to specialize in areas such as Pain Management, Forensic Hypnosis, Hypnosis for Childbirth and of course Sports Hypnosis, which is an area that has seen a significant increase around the world and at every level of sports. Most hypnotists who are generalists will see a wide variety of clients and are very successful with an extensive range of issues such as Smoking Cessation, Weight Loss, Habit Change, Stress Management, Motivation, Anxiety, School Problems, and Fears. These generalists are fully trained and ready to go into a private practice serving their clients with the above mentioned issues once they have completed a high quality training program such as the NGH Hypnotherapy Training Course that we offer here at our Ohio State Registered School for Hypnosis and Advanced Hypnotherapy.
Feb / Mar 2011
Hypnotists that are trained and certified at our school, will be able to handle such issues without a referral from another professional, unless there has been a specific exception cited by a local law or ordinance governing the practice of hypnosis in a particular state or municipality. With proper training, hypnotists may find themselves working with other professionals such as physicians and psychologists accepting clients through referrals, or working with them as a team helping the client or patient to heal or reach other personal goals. Because of the continuing pressure to be more efficient, other professions such as medicine and psychology have begun to see professional hypnotists as an asset. For that reason the use of hypnosis is on the rise, many of the above mentioned are seeking this kind of training for themselves or are searching for qualified hypnotists to whom they can make referrals. So if you are searching for a new career or want to move to the leading edge of the profession that you are in, I recommend exploring the many personal and financial possibilities that learning hypnosis brings to the table.

Magic of the Heart by David Mahen
Valentine’s Day ushers in the traditional season of love, romance, and beyond that, relationships. It’s the time before spring, but the time of promise of all things renewed. It’s also a time when our thoughts and emotions look ahead to the magic of love and the joy of new and renewed relationships. But underneath the magic, we sometimes stumble in conflicts between the untamed mind and the heart. For the young, the teenagers out there, these conflicts are monumental. Emotions and thinking combine with newly awakened hormones. And soon the distinctions between them are muddled beyond recognition. Of course, the same happens as we grow older, but past experiences help. Clarity comes with understanding and practice. We can understand that our thoughts and emotions can be clouded and conflicted. Our thoughts are more often made up of stories of situation we would like to have, distracting us from truth of what is. But thoughts can be examined for their validity and invalid thoughts can be persuaded to be still. When we find our thoughts are not valid, we can choose not to believe them.
6
A good place to start sorting this out is to begin the practice of unconditional love. One can choose to practice unconditional love for all beings. We can set aside our stories in favor of what is. We can understand the connectedness between ourselves and all beings. We can practice loving them as we love ourselves. And there is where the magic truly begins. We can move beyond neediness and rejection, and beyond the push/pull of hormone drive emotions. This isn’t to say, one won’t experience the magic of a one to one relationships. No, it hastens the experience once we give up our stories in favor of what is. Love is Magic in all its stages. Beginning and ending with universal and unconditional love we create the foundation of all experiences that follow. Our first romantic love sweeps us up to the highest vibrations in the universe where we feel that no later experience rival. But it will because no two beings are alike and no two experiences are identical. There’s plenty of room at the top for more experiences. Later stages of love, those that develop through time’s passing are no less in vibration, but they are different in perception

and feeling. They exist in a container of trust and mutual understanding, grounding us securely through the ups and downs of everyday living. The final stage circles round to the beginning, and blends with the universal love for all beings. It is that place where we can let go of ourselves, or our companions, knowing that we are forever bound in Love’s gentle vibration.

Healthy Children & Healthy Families! by Dr. Susan Payson What does it take to help your child be as healthy as is possible? You need to provide excellent nourishment to their mind, body, and soul. The holistic, or whole person, approach to health applies to children just as it does to adults! Successfully meeting the holistic needs of the children and adults in the family makes for an atmosphere of harmony and love, which is good medicine for the whole home! *Food – non GMO, organic, as fresh as possible. Chickens should be free range and not fed meat or grain. Beef should come from grass fed cows. Include nuts and seeds (if no allergies, watch out for choke hazards), beans, grains, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid high fructose corn syrup, avoid preservatives esp nitrates and nitrites, avoid processed and pre-packaged foods. Choose to prepare fresh food as the standard norm in your home and let the packaged or fast foods be the rare exceptions. Food additives and preservatives have been suspected as causing or worsening existing ADHD. Animals exposed to hormones, antibiotics, vaccines, crowded unnatural living conditions have been shown to produce products with lower quantities of nutrients, higher incidences of serious bacterial contamination, and the transmission of those added substances to the person who consumes the product. *Water-clean, filtered if necessary, plenty of it. *Sunshine- The benefits of sunlight are numerous, including natural Vitamin D and a natural mood booster! *Sleep- Proper amounts of sleep are essential for the growth and development of a child, even into the teenage years. Chronic sleep deprivation can affect learning ability, personality, the immune system, and mood. *Safe Household cleaners- Chemical residue from cleaners and containers will be ingested. Chemical residue from shampoos, bath and laundry soaps will be absorbed through the skin – the largest organ in the body with tremendous porous surface area! Children are at high risk for acute toxicity through directly eating or drinking the product, often with disastrous consequences, and they are at risk for chronic toxic effects because their bodies and other organs are still developing. Learn how to make non toxic household cleaners and detergents or buy non toxic products pre-made. Avoid ammonia, lye, and bleach. Avoid phosphates and chlorine in your dish detergent and laundry soap. Avoid sulfates in your bath soaps and shampoos. Research chemicals on ingredient lists that you do not recognize before you buy the product. Look for plastic containers that read ‘BPA free’, or opt for a glass container instead (be careful not to break!)
8
*Unstructured Play Time- Children need time to explore and test the world. They need creative time, to be spent at their discretion (with your supervision and protection, of course!). They need to dream up their own game or activity using their own rules and their own imagination. This is necessary in order to develop the intellect. Healthy development requires it. True social skills result from it. Plenty of physical activity and outdoor time flows from it naturally. There should be a proper balance of child directed play time and parent led play time alternating throughout the day. What should not be available are video games, electronic ‘educational’ toys or gadgets, TV, DVD, or unsupervised internet time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends zero screen time activities for kids under 2 years of age, and less than 2 hours/day for kids 2-18 years of age. Studies have shown that kids who exceed these limits tend to be more aggressive, less attentive, have difficulty finishing tasks, develop learning disabilities, and have a harder time relating to their peers. Great items to have around instead are building blocks, art supplies, musical instruments, and books books books! (By the way, studies also show that many adults are ‘play deprived’ themselves, and this can lead to depression and dissatisfaction.) *Discipleship- Discipline and teaching in the way they should go. They need to know what life is and what they will be expected to do when they are grown. They need the time and attention of their parents. They need to be included in the everyday lives of their parents– play, work, chores, finances, etc. They need help to build a strong spiritual foundation that will serve them throughout their lives-the house built on the Rock. They should be able to depend on parents whose disposition is stable and strong despite difficult circumstances – a precious skill that will help them to manage stress and make good decisions when they are grown! They need to rely on your authority as a parent – work to establish it in a healthy positive manner. And, of course, plenty of hugs, kisses, smiles and I love you’s are always in order!

Baker Chiropractic We are the Dickman family: Brian, Stacy, Aubrey, and Tyler. We have been patients of Dr. Baker since August. Doc and his staff are helping us live happier, healthier lives, one adjustment at a time.
struggling with an ear infection for three continuous months with no relief from antibiotics. Each two week cycle the course of antibiotics became stronger, and our one-year-old boy was not getting better. When the pediatrician told me that we were looking at tubes I was determined to find something else. I happened to mention Ty’s issue at Doc’s one day; he gave me information on how chiropractic can help. We were desperate to find an alternative to surgery, so we decided to try it. After just three adjustments his ears were clear! Two weeks later he had a reoccurrence. This time we went straight to Doc. We decided to hold off on the antibiotics. And again, three adjustments later he was clear! This is such a relief to me as a mom, and our boy is as happy as can be!
I (Stacy) first came to Doc because of continual back pain. At my consultation I mentioned that I have a condition the doctors have labeled neurocardiogenic syncope, which causes me to faint frequently. I had never met anyone who had experience with this until Doc informed me that he has handled patients with this: he was sure he could help. I can’t say that I believed him right away, but that has changed! One Sunday I had two episodes and continued to suffer from vertigo and pain into Monday. I went to Doc’s that afternoon and in just one adjustment my dizziness subsided! He sent me for a massage, where his staff eased a lot of the pain and the headache. I was amazed and so thankful!
Brian and Aubrey decided to begin seeing Doc in a proactive manner. Their bi-weekly adjustments keep them lined up and functioning in a healthy manner. We know that we will be healthier and happier if we can let our bodies work as they were designed. The staff treats each of us as real people, including our kids. Tyler is often in Krista’s arms, and Danielle and Courtney let Aubrey color at the front. The office is a wonderful and comfortable environment that my kids enjoy. Ty even climbs on the table by himself at nineteen months! We are blessed to have Dr. Baker and his staff as our doctor! Thank you for everything!
Tyler is a champion for Doc. He started to get adjustments after

Who’s Running Your Relationships? by Larkin Sell Who is running your relationships? Take a closer look, closer. Reading this, you may be asking yourself this question with regards to you or your partner. But think again. How would you respond if it was suggested to you that chances are, neither you or your partner are actually calling the shots in your relationship? Let’s take it a step farther in presenting the notion that you and your partner are not even truly the ones sharing YOUR relationship at all! What do you think of that? Preposterous? Ridiculous? How about absurd? If you are like most people raised in modern day western society, it is very likely that you are shaking your head, rolling your eyes and repeating something similar to the nonsense words above. But if you are a person waking from the dream of ego you will understand precisely where we are heading with this. You cannot be aware of that which you are not aware of, right? So do not deny it until you try it. If this is an entirely new concept to you, consider giving it a go, at least long enough to disprove it or come up with a dramatic excuse your ego will be most willing to supply, if you are resisting the idea. After all, what harm can it do to give it a chance, right? Chances are what you have been trying isn’t working or you wouldn’t still be reading with us. Most likely you sense the potential to discover something new and enlightening here or you would have tossed this aside already. If you’re closed off to the idea of awareness it is only you and your personal chances for growth, change and love that you are hindering. So let’s move into discussing who is truly running your relationships and who it is that is actually having the relationships you believe to be yours. So, who is actually having the relationship you believe to be yours? And who are you having it with? Most of us are under the false impression that we are our persona’s. Because we believe our thoughts and seldom separate ourselves from them we are subject to the whims and control of our ego, and to other peoples’ egos as well for that matter. When ego is in-charge (true of most of us, most of the time) there is little space or opportunity for your awareness, the true self, true consciousness to emerge and participate at all in life let alone live authentically and enjoy it. Most of us were unintentionally raised by ego to live according to ego and persona instead of living in accordance with who we truly are, our awareness. Escape from the ego prison is rare and challenging, because ego counteracts awareness and awareness is the essence of who we
10
are. As long as ego is ruling the roost, it keeps you hypothesized and believing everything it feeds you, every thought, every emotion, every belief, judgment and fear, you name it and ego will use it against your consciousness in order to remain in control. Do you honestly want your life and relationships completely controlled by aspects of yourself and others that neither of you are even conscious of? That’s like handing your free will over to self-serving shadows who secretly trick you into being their slave. This isn’t to say that ego is “bad”. It is quite necessary for our fight or flight survival. When it comes to defending and protecting ourselves and others, and when safety and life and death are at stake it is a vital component to being human.. But it is there as a tool like our mind and cognitive thought. These are important for our consciousness to utilize but NOT the aspects of our human form that will to lead us to love, peace, joy and fulfillment. On the contrary, allow the ego to run your life and life will be a painful and frustrating journey of suffering and struggle, full of temporary relief without transformation until you awaken to awareness....which means awakening from the ego dream, or nightmare rather. So, what do you say? Would you like to begin discovering how to awaken from your ego dream? Do you want to know what it’s like to truly feel alive? To see and hear for the first time? Are you interested in genuinely feeling from your being and responding sincerely without the falsified persona clouding the experience? How would you like to know what it’s like to truly love and be loved? Can you even imagine what life would be like to truly share with someone? Not your ego and their ego but authentic self to authentic-self, free of the iron clad doors of the ego and protection mechanisms of persona? What would it be like to really KNOW another and share love in its fullest without the fear of things not working out, them leaving you, lies and distrust that are all poisons from the shadows of egos? Are you brave enough to embark upon an inner adventure that will, without a doubt transform your reality and your relationships? Are true love, authentic connections and awakening to your true and eternal self worth it to you to give these ideas a chance? Or is it just too much trouble? Perhaps you are too comfy and enjoying the false and temporary sense of security that ego temps you with. The Choice is yours. It always has been and always will be. Your choices are powerful. Would you like to realize how powerful your choices are? If your answer is yes! Congratulations! You have made a tremendously powerful choice by taking the first step! Acceptance! Yes, that’s right, acceptance! Sounds much too simple, doesn’t it? One cannot awaken from the ego nightmare until he or she accepts the possibility that he or she is asleep. This realization alone is

an alert to the ego that you have seen a glimmer of light, that is the awareness within you, that is you. No matter how vast the darkness, where there is even a glimmer of light, darkness is dissipated by light. Where there is light, there is warmth. Love is warmth and light. With denial and fear comes darkness. Awareness is pure light, the light of consciousness. Continue a pursuit of awareness and darkness fades away as your light of consciousness illuminates your path. We make it so difficult, such a struggle, so hopeless and yet, that is all the grand illusion constructed by ego. It is all much simpler than you may believe. But let’s just begin with acceptance and realization of the ego dream, for the next step will be the awakening. This is the beginning of transforming your relationships, your love relationships and your relationship with yourself and the world! It’s Gotta Be Love
by Cindy Huff & Terri Noftsger
I had just come downstairs contemplating this issue’s theme of “Love and Relationship” when I looked over to our couch and saw something that very much reflected that theme. Our Basset Obi and our cat Diana were curled up together napping. A little while later I observed Lukas, our younger Basset, trying to invite Diana to play. Evidently cats do not interpret bouncing up and down and nose pushes as “let’s play!” Simba, our other house cat, later tapped Lukas on the nose, but it definitely was NOT about play; it was more about “who are you, what do you feel like?” Poor Lukas, he just doesn’t get “cat” language yet. All of this reflects the art of love and relationship between animals. While some would argue that attributing the emotion of love to animals is anthromorphization, we see evidence of it in our own family as well as the families of our clients. Animals do feel affection and devotion towards one another just as much as they do anger, frustration, and dislike. We see it between members of different species as illustrated by our cats and dogs, as well as between members of the same species.
12
We also see that relationships between animals can be at the same time simple and complex. Animals are very much present in the moment, and take things as they are. They don’t worry about hidden agendas, ulterior motives, and other barriers to communication, trust and love. Either they trust and like each other, or they don’t. Over time they form emotional attachments, so that when separated they become agitated or depressed. Our horse Rohan visibly mourned the loss of our old horse Rusty after he passed over, and was lonely and unhappy until we were able to bring another horse to live with us. Watching Rohan and Stoker, a very dominant older horse, learn to relate to each other was like watching a ballet. Animals and humans also form relationships based on trust and affection. We learn to communicate with each other, we enjoy being together not only doing things, but also in simple companionship. Who hasn’t enjoyed a dog or cat lying on your lap as you read or watch TV? It’s a basic, simple closeness that says “I love and trust you”.
Feb / Mar 2011
Human – animal relationships are as widely varied as the individuals involved. They can be very complex as well, as there are a lot of barriers to communication in the relationship. Some of those barriers include different cultures, different oral languages, and different beliefs about the other being. For example, I don’t know of any human culture where two individuals greet each other by “sniffing butts” (dogs), or blowing in one another’s nostrils (horses). In many human cultures staring directly at another person whom you do not know for a long period of time may be considered hostile or very rude. Yet, this is what cats do when they are checking each other out. And while humans from one culture may have different gestures and beliefs, we generally do understand that bringing the corners of our mouths up and even showing our teeth while doing it is a friendly gesture. For chimpanzees, this can be a sign of aggression. How do domestic animals and humans manage to overcome such barriers to have loving, understanding relationships with each other? Simple – the animals make it happen in most cases. This is because animals generally form connections to others with their hearts first. Once the initial “checking out” is done (sniffing, posturing, etc), then most animals will make an overture inviting touch and connection. A dog may lean against your leg and look up at you in a trusting, open way. A cat may rub against you and purr. A horse may rub its head against you or nudge you gently with its nose. Even with animals that have had very negative experiences with humans can eventually make such an attempt providing the human is quiet, patient, and allows the animal to make the first move. As we approach the human holiday where we celebrate our heart connections with each other, please take a moment to honor and appreciate your heart connections with the wonderful animals in your life. Sowing Seeds in Africa Henry David Thoreau once wrote, “Though I do not believe that a plant will spring up where no seed has been, I have great faith in a seed. Convince me that you have a seed there, and I am prepared to expect wonders. We all sow seeds of one kind or another, and some of those seeds grow to fruition, providing opportunities that blossom beyond our wildest imagination. Recently, a small group from Marvin’s Organic Gardens, along with friends Jonas Muyima and Jean Nightingale, had an extraordinary opportunity to sow seeds in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in central Africa. Our mission was seemingly straightforward: To share our love by building organic edible gardens with those in need. Having never visited this part of the world, we had no idea what to expect. We experienced immeasurable natural beauty, ancient cultures and destitute communities with unbridled joy for life. The rawness of the people and the wildness of the cities and native landscapes, opened our eyes and touched our lives in profound ways, leaving us with a yearning to sow more seeds, both near and far.
around almost every corner. While the per capita income of Ohio is around $35,000.00, the per capita income of DRC is about $173.00 U.S. dollars, which equates to a daily salary of less than fifty cents. Because there is insufficient manufacturing in the country, most food and material needs are shipped from afar, inflating the price tag to more than double what we pay for the same products. Many of the citizens of Kinshasa come to the city with the hope of an easier way of life in contrast to rural living, but jobs are scarce, and housing is expensive. There is an estimated 20,000 street children living and sleeping in the dirty streets of the capital city, with no one to look after them, and no government programs to support those in need. Much of the military and police are underpaid, and more often than not, require bribes for travelers to pass from one area to another. While the picture being painted may seem bleak, there is an air of hope, of joy, of purpose and laughter that abounds, even in the midst of desperate poverty. We arrived in Kinshasa with a clear objective, and we refused to be discouraged, because we knew that even the smallest mango seed eventually grows into a towering tree that can feed scores of Congolese for generations. Our mission had begun, and we had our work cut out for us.
Upon arriving in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we were left breathless and overwhelmed by the sheer population density, lack of infrastructure and trash that literally paved the roads and filled the gutters. The absence of trash service and sanitary sewer was shockingly ubiquitous, and the torrential precipitation during the nine months of rainy season offers the only relief to flush this festering waste from ditches and roads into the nearby Congo River. The city is more like an oversized ramshackle village, which extends for miles in all directions, bustling with the disarray of desperate street vendors from young children to elderly, selling everything imaginable just to feed themselves and their families. The population of Kinshasa is around 10,076,099 while the city of Cincinnati metropolitan area houses a population of around 2,155,137, according to a recent Census Bureau estimate. It is difficult to comprehend this kind of population density and poverty, because we are inundated with organized neighborhoods, box stores, restaurants, movie theatres, car dealerships, outlet malls, amusement parks, democracy, law and order and a plethora of every plausible convenience
Our time in the capital city was productive, and we used every possible minute to discover resources such as: vegetable seeds, garden tools, containerized edible trees and willing volunteers that could help us to locate and install potential garden sites where we could begin the arduous process of bed building, compost pile making, seed sowing and more. With the generous support of our friends in Cincinnati, we were able to hire and feed sixteen local Congolese, both young and old, to help us break ground. The soil in the DRC consists of sand mixed with small quantities of organic matter. Before we knew it, our teamwork had culminated with ten raised vegetable beds ready to be planted. Our hard working friends were grateful for the chance to be a part of this fruitful endeavor, and worked tirelessly, in the searing hot equatorial sun, to breathe life into a vacant city lot, reminiscent of war torn ruins of crumbling walls and decaying remains of housing. We planted okra, squash, pumpkin, corn, peppers, beans, eggplant and cassava, which is the staple crop of the Congo, eaten at every meal in some form or another. With the help of our eager garden comrades, we collected compost materials from nearby, such as leaf litter, chicken

manure and all manner of herbaceous debris uprooted from the bed building process. This compost is an essential element to sustain production of Congolese gardens because it improves moisture retention and adds nutrients and minerals to otherwise deprived sandy soil. The collaborative construction of edible gardens and compost piles, tree plantings and trash pick up in the city, all provided opportunities to empower the Congolese with a sense of purpose, ownership, self sufficiency and satisfaction in their workmanship. In the scope of progress, we made but a small impact, but persistence always pays. As American author and historian Edward Everett Hale once wrote, “ I am one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something I can do.” From Kinshasa, we ventured into the heart of the Congo, southeast en route towards the rural village of Gungu. As we proceeded from city to countryside, the surrounding landscape transformed from concrete jungle to lush tropical jungle, and then to higher elevations consisting of primarily savanna grasslands speckled with contorted Mobu trees and rolling waves of sand dunes. This vast sea of green flora is perpetually animated by the light breeze that sweeps across the plains. Once inhabited by roaming elephants, zebra, gazelle, giraffe, lions and flocks of birds, all wildlife disappeared decades ago under the pressure of hungry villagers whose struggle for survival pushed the wild fauna to near extinction in most of the Congo. While absent of wildlife, the Democratic Republic of Congo is blessed with rivers and creeks that act as veins, pumping life blood into surrounding villages that trace these tributaries throughout much of the country. Upon entering Gungu, we were welcomed by friendly villagers, myriad palm trees and coarse sandy streets lined with mud walled dirt floor huts that peppered the landscape of this rustic community. It was as though we had been transported to an ancient civilization that existed long ago, with a simple way life long forgotten by developed countries. In addition to the lack of sanitary sewer and trash service seen in the city, this primitive village of Gungu has no electricity, running water, internet or phone service and no paved roads or other modern conveniences that we take for granted. Nonetheless, these native people are eager to learn and serve, and happily gathered together to help us build local compost piles at strategic locations around the village. Otherwise,

organic waste and trash are buried, or worse, burned, which can cause serious health repercussions for those breathing the volatile fumes. A frenzy of excitement ensued wherever we gathered to collectively build the community compost heaps, and young children as well as adults and elderly helped gather brush, manure and other biodegradable waste from surrounding areas to add to their community compost piles. The goal was to layer the materials; fresh green vegetation on top of dried limbs and brush, followed by a layer of sandy soil; and then repeated until we had accumulated large heaps ready to age naturally under the hot African sun and seasonal rains. As in Kinshasa, the goal is to utilize the finished compost to periodically amend vegetable and fruit gardens, edible trees as well as medicinal plants, all which greatly benefit from the nutrient rich compost. The sandy soil erodes rapidly under normal rainfall and leaches nutrients so readily that there is a constant need for additional organic matter. Granular fertilizers are too expensive and inaccessible for remote villages like Gungu, and the synthetic fertilizers could contaminate their natural water supply. Everyone we met was receptive to the need for compost, and these community compost piles will be supplemented throughout the year to recycle their organic waste, and ultimately, improve the health of their soil and increase crop yields, naturally. Everywhere we traveled, we were met with incredible needs for the most basic necessities. The hospitals are using equipment dating back to the early 1940’s when the Belgians had control of the country. Most of the medical equipment belonged in museums, not hospitals. The equipment used to extract blood consists of two jars screwed to the floor with a rusty foot pedal to pump blood manually for transfusions. The beds at the hospital have no mattress pads, only sharp metal box springs woven with sticks. The ambulance that once carried patients to the hospital has been out-of-service for over thirty years, and now sits in the foregrounds, on blocks, covered with green moss and rust, like a statue from ancient times. The schools, from elementary to university, had dirt floors, and an utter lack of even the simplest supplies such as chalk, pencils, paper and books. A student can attend school for as little as $20.00 per year, but this money is difficult for most families to come by. Local families are in need of sandals, eye glasses, sunglasses, continued on pg. 16

clothing and other household essentials that we have in surplus. The government body in Gungu has only one early 1960’s typewriter, which they rent from a local citizen, for all record keeping. Local farmers have no way to transport produce to market without as much as a bicycle. The farmers are also deficient of simple tools needed for crop cultivation, and witness many preventable illnesses with their livestock due to inbreeding, and are in need of genetic diversity of both crops and livestock. Unsustainable agricultural practices such as planting crop rows vertical on hillsides have expedited soil erosion, accelerating desertification of farm soils. Such soil loss causes farmers, whom are mainly women, to walk up to ten miles from home to farm field and back, balancing heavy basket loads on their heads, in search of soils adequate to support their crops. This rapid loss of soil due to erosion, also forces farmers to slash and burn their last remaining forests in order to farm the virgin soils for a short time, before they must delve deeper into the forest in search of new soil to support their crops. These diminishing forests could provide Congolese with a sustainable supply of food, medicine, cosmetics and wildlife habitat to support their families and build local economy. To date, there are no preserved or protected forest areas in the entire country, and this valuable natural resource is silently disappearing, with no government support to conserve or restore the natural woodlands. Considered one of the most mineral rich countries in the world, the Democratic Republic of Congo is brimming with minerals that could be used to draw the country out of poverty. Progressive countries have honed in on this wealth of mineral resources, and greedily displaced native people off their rightful land, degrading the natural environment and leaving the country with little to show for their depletion of natural assets. Coltan, a necessary mineral found in every cell phone, computer, DVD player and video game system in the world, comes primarily from the DRC, which receives surprisingly little benefit from the mineral exploitation. In fact, over 6.9 million Congolese have died since 1998 over wars funded with Coltan profits. In the face of such poverty, one would assume that all is lost, but hope lives in the hearts of the Congolese. Dale Carnegie once said “Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept trying when there seemed to be no hope at all“.
to serve in the Democratic Republic of Congo, enabled us to seek out the needs of the people, and comfort the afflicted. We are planning a second mission January 2012; to take back support, both financial and material, in order to fulfill as many of the above-mentioned needs as possible. Hope is the pillar that holds up the world, and anyone that feels called to, can help to empower the people of the DRC with their love and support by contributing to this mission of servitude. Peace can be found through harmonious relationships, and we wish to bridge the gap between Congolese culture and ours, by creating lasting friendships through provisions and kinship that can create lasting, positive change. Much can be learned from the community focused way of life we witnessed in the Congo, and this exchange of culture and ideals can not only help to empower the impoverished Congolese, but also, enrich our lives in as many ways as we can enrich theirs.
Our mission, including those who supported our efforts

Chocolate; some people just crave it, others do their best to resist consuming this rich, tasty treat. There is good news about chocolate, it is not just for Valentine’s Day anymore! There is increasing medical evidence that dark chocolate is in fact good for us.
Chocolate has the reputation of being a mood enhancer, it stimulates endorphin production, and contains serotonin, giving a feeling of pleasure. Considered a special gift to give your sweetheart on Valentines day, chocolate reigns the most popular next to flowers.
Eating the right amount of dark chocolate daily has been proven to increase cardiac health, lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. New studies and research have also shown that consuming about an ounce and a half a day for a couple of weeks can reduce stress levels.
Doctors do want to advise that many types of dark chocolate does consist of fat and sugar, so it is best to consume a small amount to avoid the risk of adding too many calories to your diet. Fortunately, there are many good brands of high quality dark chocolate to choose from.
It is important to note that it is the dark chocolate that contains the highest levels of flavanol and other antioxidants, responsible for health benefits. Research has found, the compound, epicatechin found in dark chocolate may protect the brain after a stroke by increasing the brain’s signals, which are known to shield nerve cells from damage.

Ancient Sounds ~
Modern Healing
New Insights from New Masters
by Jill Mattson Widely diverse theories on the nature of our universe agree in one intriguing aspect - everything in nature has a vibrational component. Masters and visionaries throughout time share the basic tenet that at the most fundamental level, all inanimate matter and all living systems are particle and wave (matter and energy). Researchers into the body’s subtle-energy systems speak of the intricate marriage of matter and energy. A powerful picture is emerging that paints the human organism as a complex of interacting subtle-energy systems. Creative healers have found that sound waves can be used to adjust the subtle-energy fields producing a myriad of related benefits. This phenomena aka Sound Healing or Vibrational Medicine, sometimes referred to as Human BioAcoustics, is probably the most exciting new frontier in Alternative Healing. Sound is being successfully employed to: remedy many physical ailments, expand consciousness, enhance intelligence and provide soothing calm for emotional and spiritual needs. Sharry Edward’s life and work reveal that special nano frequencies can be detected within our voices and emanating from our bodies. These minute sounds give clues to our physical and mental states of being. It is widely believed these sounds indicate whether the body’s subtle-energy forces are in proper balance or out-of-harmony. Sharry discovered that by carefully applying the appropriate frequencies, harmony is restored to the subtle-energy systems; the corresponding optimum spiritual and mental states are also created to empower healing and growth. Edwards innately recognized that specific sounds correlated to certain physical problems. She was born blessed with an extraordinary sense of hearing which was greatly enhanced after a near death experience. This remarkable sense of hearing was responsible for Sharry’s first encounters with the enormous potential of sound. She first experimented creating harmonizing tones with her voice to alleviate the discordant sounds she perceived in people. She developed the ability to produce extraordinary sine wave sound frequencies with her voice alone. In vastly diverse examples Sharry was able to help
20
people suffering from glaucoma, emphysema and traumatic muscular-skeleton injuries. Dr. Alfred Tomatis was a French ear, nose and throat specialist. He became interested in the role of “active listening” as it related to human development and healing. Tomatis’ work showed that there is a critical distinction between “hearing” and “listening”. Tomatis invented the “electronic ear” to enable us to hear “missing” frequencies due compromised or damaged ear cilia. Sometimes ear cilia were injured or lacking due to physical or emotional injuries. The use of this electronic ear strengthened or even regenerated ear cilia. Similar to Edwards above, Tomatis believed that the voice is critical in providing optimum health and wellbeing in the brain, body and consciousness of each of us. A full, healthy voice is only possible with a healthy sense of hearing. According to this work the voice plays a key part in selfhealing. Tomatis has also developed an elaborate program to rehabilitate our listening capabilities and heal the connected emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs and faculties. Robert Monroe (1915 – 1995) was another pioneer in the use of special sound frequencies. Monroe was an insatiably curious man who began his work experimenting with how people could learn while they were sleeping. This experience introduced him to the power that certain sound frequencies exhibited; appropriate frequencies would put people into a deep delta brain wave sleep. Monroe tried new frequencies on himself - to often amazing results. He was able to achieve out-of-body experiences when listening to certain frequencies. Monroe wrote his first of three books, Journey Out of Body, documenting in great detail his OB experiences and efforts to validate his observations. Ultimately Monroe’s life’s work produced the Hemi-Sync Process TM. Monroe’s Hemi-Sync ProcessTM is a sound experience designed to provide the listener with a combination of frequencies that produce a desired state of consciousness; Hemi-Sync produces brain wave states which foster self awareness and enhance self-knowing and reconnection. Hemi-Sync produces positive resonance in the brain; the related vibrating patterns of the brain produce brainwaves associated with certain states of consciousness. In this way listeners enjoy states of consciousness – such as deep meditation which they may not otherwise be able to achieve.

Spring Cleaning by Charley Sky David Hulse, founder of SomaEnergeticsTM , feels that all matter is slowed-down vibration and that subatomic particles are not made of material stuff. He believes that music is the key to unlock the universe. Hulse has studied the Solfeggio scale from Horowitz and Puleo’s Healing Codes for Biological Apocalypse for enlightenment. This book reveals a special pattern of numbers encoded in the Biblical Numbers 7:12 – 89. Once converted into frequencies this pattern has demonstrated powerful healing qualities. Hulse has produced specialized tuning forks to exactly reproduce the ancient Solfeggio tones. These tuning forks are the basis for the SomaEnergetics TM techniques to balance and restore our energies. Hulse has closely mapped the body and he is able to detect and correct dissonances that clients claim change their lives. Hulse’s SomaEnergetics TM can bring about profound emotional and spiritual healing to a person as well as conventional physical improvements. Sound Healing is a healing discipline growing rapidly in popularity, however, many of the principles that are new to us have been around since ancient times. The early Egyptians knew of the power of sound. Ancient Egyptian tombs and chambers were designed using the mathematics of ancient musical scales and ratios. The most common dimensional proportions found in Egyptian temples correspond to harmonious musical intervals. There are reports that some rooms in Egyptian tombs will reverberate wondrously when certain music is played in these rooms. Every stone and block in the tomb chamber plays back the music in an astonishing way. In the Egyptian temple of Denderah, there are many drawings of musicians. Hieroglyphics on the wall read “The sky and its stars are singing in you”. Many ancient scholars and scientists have concluded that music is embedded in the very fabric of the planets and heavens. Indeed the singing of the cosmos reveals the deeper unity and oneness of all creation, all vibration! About the Author: Jill Mattson is a three-time author and widely recognized expert and composer in the emerging field of Sound Healing. Jill lectures throughout the United States on “Ancient Sounds ~ Modern Healing” - taking followers on an exciting journey revealing the Healing Power of Sound. This year I did something that may seem a little odd. I started my spring cleaning early. Now in and of itself, this is not so strange. But I began the chore on January 9. I admit, it hardly looked like spring with the soft blanket of snow on the ground outside of my window. But, I was inspired by something I wrote that made me think that perhaps I might want to live a little differently, a little more outside of the box, hence the early spring cleaning. I will share with you what I wrote, and perhaps you will see why I chose such an unorthodox time to begin my task. Why not live an extraordinary life? Burn, like a giant candle thrown through the gates of hell. do not wait for a heaven when you die, you are living in heaven. scream yes! like a madman who is asked if he wants to live. tell people you love them, then love them, and love them passionately, as if today was your last chance. buy gifts for people you have never met, then seek them out, and give them their presents. take absurd risks, and be wildly alive, without fear of ridicule. why not? you have a gift beyond compare, the gift of life. if your concern for looking good, is greater than your desire for living an outrageous life, you are throwing it all away. so make em laugh till they cry, risk it all for another, and for yourself. wake up and live, and you will live forever. sleep when you must, but be willing to wake up in the middle of the night to write a poem, or compose a song, or call a friend, and tell them how dear they are to you. cast off the old you, for you are dying every second. embrace the new you, that comes into being with each breath. live, live, live! while you have a shot at it. burn, like a brilliant and beautiful shooting star screaming across the night sky! if you had a chance, would you take it? - Charley Sky

Stress - Is it Killing Us? by Paul F. Fulk,
D.C., F.A.S.A. In the thirty four years I have been in practice, I have seen a lot of what stress does to our bodies in more than one way. Yes, it causes structural misalignment of the lower back because of the weakness of some muscles that hold the hips in place. I had a patient tell me that he “only did one stressful thing today”. I asked him what it was. He stated, “that he had gotten out of bed” In other words if he had not gotten out of bed he would not have been stressed to the point that his back went out of place. This was funny, but it contained a lot of truth. Whether it is emotional, chemical, biochemical and environmental stressors, it all depends on how we are able to cope with these situations. The pineal gland in the center of your head has a direct connection to the adrenal glands that sit on the top of the kidneys. But, for all practical purposes, they control the majority of the organs from your chin down to your toes. The pineal gland is your environmental reactor, your body’s barometer center of your emotions and weather radar station. The “flight and fright” mechanism happens when you are scared or something drastic happens to you. So any of the STRESSORS can affect these glands, which will change your whole body’s chemistry. Subjecting your body to alterations that can produce diseases, weight gain, frustration, anxiety and depression. Remember I said that the pineal gland is the center of your emotions. Too many drug manufactures have capitalized on what is known as “depression”. Ironically enough, the long winter nights is when the frequency of depression among the American populous is most common. The pineal gland is your sleep inducer, which is active at night time. A hormone called melatonin is produced by the pineal gland that takes you down to rem sleep level. Emotional hurt can put scar tissue around the pineal gland and makes it ineffective. I have found some research that was done in Canada that revealed that candida alicans, a symbiotic bacteria in the blood stream, leaches the lithium and biotin out of our
22
blood. A number of years ago lithium carbonate was used to treat depression. However, it had some bad side effects on the kidneys, so it is no longer used. It just so happens that lithium is essential to make the pineal work. When it does not function up to par, the computer center (hypothalamus) does not do it’s job and the pituitary does not get the proper signals to issue the proper hormones to make the adrenal glands, the spleen, the parathyroid, the thyroid and other organs that are hormone controlled to function properly. In other words a lot of our systems do not work in a normal capacity. We get depressed, we don’t feel good, we don’t want to get out of bed in the morning, you can become suicidal and do irrational things that are not accepted by our society. Simply because the glands are not functioning the way they should. There are many antidepressants on the market today, but they also have many bad side bad effects. The television is loaded with ads for these products. Since 1988 Para Health Foods, Inc. has made two vitamins that have resolved the depression issue and the weight gain problem. Interesting enough, they both are effective at night. Para Pineal has all the ingredients in it to make the pineal gland work and Paratrim aides the computer center in your brain to combust fats at night when you are asleep. You can order these products from Para Health Foods, Inc., phone number is 937-434-8066, located at 7865 Paragon Rd. in Dayton, Ohio 45459. It is also known that people under stress have a greater tendency to engage in unhealthy behaviors, such as alcohol, drugs, cigarette smoking and making poor nutritional choices, for example, eating cookies and cake with milk before going to bed. Sugar, MSG, dyes, steroids, antibiotics, food additives, NutriSweet and other food products will produce a lot of stress in our body that we can eliminate simply by reading labels on products and not putting them in our mouth. Dr. McDaniels, a healthy 96 year old doctor friend says “if it is in a box don’t eat it. It must be in the original form before ingesting it”. These are his ideas for being very healthy even at his age. These unhealthy behaviors can further increase the severity of symptoms related to stress, such as

nicotine addiction, alcoholism which leads to a fatty liver, obesity because of overeating when stressed. High blood pressure is many times a result of stress. I am sure many of you know and understand what stress is all about. The experience of stress is very individualized. What one person can handle another cannot. Stress at work has to be paramount today, because of the shortage of help and fewer people, employees are required to do the same amount of work of two of three people. Believe it or not, there was a vitamin that was developed for a professional football team that helped the players deal with the stress of getting banged and hurt while playing the game. It helps to stay off the stress factors in many situations. It worked so well for the team that they won the next eight games in a row after using Pro-Cortisol Balance. There are a number of problems that can be resolved by making sure your spine is in line and your cranial bones are where they are supposed to be. If you have any questions about what I have said, please feel free to call me for a free 15 minute consultation to see if I can help you with your physical problems. My office number 937-434-8066.

The Appeal of Aromatherapy by Dr. Barbara Ut
Love comes in many forms – from romantic love, to the kind-hearted love and adoration of friends and family. And it seems that openly-showing love and affection to one-another is a natural instinct within all of us, although it sometimes gets hidden underneath the barriers of past hurts, obscured by the clouds of low esteem, or perhaps buried below the burdens of daily responsibilities and worries. In ancient legend, St. Valentine is often credited with uniting kindred spirits, so this seems a perfect time of year to discuss re-opening to the joy that connecting with others can bring. It is no mystery why Valentine’s Day is a busy day of the year for florists. Simply recognizing someone with the gift of flowers can open a pathway to their heart. Flowers can raise one’s spirits or ignite a feeling of romance. Researchers often cite the impact of aromas on the limbic system, the seat of emotions, and the pure scent that fresh flowers emanate can be delightful. Alas, that glorious scent and beauty of cut flowers can also
24
be fleeting. Fortunately, you can capture and extend the scent and enchantment of flowers using Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the use of naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants, called essential oils. The most common method of obtaining these oils is by steam distillation. Aromatherapy oils, if properly stored (tightly capped and kept away from heat and direct light) can be stored for long periods of time. After years of studying and working with essential oils, I have found they can offer many possible benefits. Since aromas have the potential of influencing our frame of mind, I present here the emotional properties of a few oils: • Many people are unable to fully open to relationships due to past hurts or disappointments. Essential oils can help you begin to release resentments and restore faith and trust. For this, try Bergamot, Cypress, Helichrysum (also known as Everlasting or Immortelle), Melissa (Lemon Balm), Neroli, or Yarrow. Of course, one of the most significant essential oils used in relationships of any kind is Rose, used to mend all matters of the heart.
Feb / Mar 2011
• When you feel more confident in yourself, this can often help you to respond more positively to others. To foster self confidence and vibrant self-esteem, look to Basil, Clary Sage, Cedarwood, Neroli, Pettigrain, or Pine.
When you wish to show your affection for others, human contact can be very effective. The alchemy of combining a specially chosen essential oil with gentle touch or massage can generate feelings of genuine tenderness and caring.
• To restore peace and serenity and release nervousness and anxiety, try Benzoin, Chamomile (German and Roman), Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Rosewood, or Vetiver.
Other easy ways to use essential oils include putting a few drops in your bath, or even putting a drop or two on your hairbrush before using.
• To elevate and refresh your spirits and restore cheer and optimism, take advantage of Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Melissa, Orange, Palmarosa, Pettigrain, or Peppermint. Discover how these scents help release similar friendliness and warmth in others. Of course, any scent you en-joy will bring you happiness, which will be felt by those around you.
There are many wonderful local and online stores that sell high quality, therapeutic grade essential oils. Most aromatherapy companies clearly label their oils as pure, or as 100% derived from the listed plant source. You can also buy oils that are pre-diluted at a lower cost, or you can make your own dilutions. Hydrosols, the fragrant water left over from the distillation of essential oils, are a less concentrated and less-expensive option to 100% essential oils.
• To temporarily relieve a mind burdened by obstacles and decisions and to ease worry and restore an appetite for life, employ Cardamom, Chamomile, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lemon, Patchouli, or Sandalwood. • Sometimes the greatest gesture we can extend to those close to us is true acceptance of who they are. Oils can help you remember and appreciate the beautiful exceptionality of others. When people are truly acknowledged and cherished, their hearts frequently open in kind. For undemanding, tender acceptance, consider Lavender, Chamomile (both German and Roman), and Sandalwood. • Related, extending true grace and compassion to your partner can sometimes lead directly to passion. Marjoram, Nutmeg or Spikenard can lend support. • To encourage open communication, look to Bergamot, Clary Sage, Fennel, or Lavender. • Finally, there are oils specifically credited with recharging one’s libido, perhaps due to their anxietyreleasing, enriching qualities. These include Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Jasmine, and Patchouli.
Aromatherapy is a natural and beautiful way to indulge yourself and those you care about – enjoy! PLEASE NOTE: None of the information in this article is intended to constitute medical advice or treatment. Essential oils used in aromatherapy are concentrated oils of plants and therefore, very strong by nature, and some oils can stain. Of course, essential oils can have physical effects as well, and individuals are encouraged to understand the full impact of essential oils prior to using them. Caution is recommended. About the author: Dr. Barbara is a Doctor of Naturopathy and Certified Aromatherapist, teaching various health & wellness courses at area colleges and nursing schools, including nutrition, integrative/ holistic health, personal wellness, etc. Dr. Barbara also holds seminars and workshops on a variety of additional topics including holistic nutrition, herbology, aromatherapy, flower essences, emotional wellbeing, etc. For more information, Dr. Barbara’s email is blu58@embarqmail.com.
There are a wide variety of ways to use aromatherapy essential oils either singly, or in a blend of multiple oils. The most common methods of using essential oils is via inhalation, such as diffused into the air or simply dropped onto a tissue, or diluted in a carrier or base oil for external use. Essential oils are diluted in carrier or base oils before application to the skin to help ensure safety. Carrier or base oils are usually vegetable, nut or seed oils such as almond, jojoba, grape seed, olive or sunflower oil.

A Heart Tribute to my Friend Jeff I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course... - St. Paul to Timothy WOW! What a journey of LOVE I have experienced in my life knowing and loving my longtime friend JEFF! He was positive power to every life he touched. Jeff was clear about his direction in life and reached his goals with humility and gentle spirit. Jeff made you smile just by looking at you with his big blue eyes and huge grin. He cheered me up on the phone just by saying “Hi, this is Jeff, your best friend in the whole wide world and I Love You.” Jeff loved everyone. Jeff was a teacher and a superb sports massage therapist. Jeff knew the power of a great hug and gave it often because he knew others needed to be uplifted. Jeff let others know him deeply and shared himself. He trusted -he believed- especially in others and encouraged young athletes constantly. He loved the mountains. He loved to run, swim, hike, golf, bike and ski. Jeff was the picture of health and took vitamins, drank greens and wheatgrass, an awesome physical specimen that was an Iron Man contender 3 times, in love with his wife, family/friends, and life. His world changed in February 2009 with the
26
news that he had a brain tumor on the left side of his head. Jeff started to research his options and sought help. He continued to live life with gusto and enthusiasm. I felt fortunate in April 2010, Jeff came to town and we spent 3 hours together, the last time I saw him and it was precious. Jeff (41) transcended on Nov 15th, 2010 after a total of 5 brain surgeries in less than 2 years. Jeff left his mark, his legacy, his love surrounded. Jeff is among the angels now! At Jeff’s memorial there were so many stories about Jeff and the lives he touched deeply. Everyone present struggled to breathe, yet, laughed much and cried remembering him and how he touched us all! Hanna (Jeff’s 11 year old niece) described him well in her poem: Uncle Jeff was unique because he traveled all over the world, made friends everywhere, never knew a stranger, had a lot of broken bones on his left side, and his laughter. Nice because he took me shopping, listened to music, watched cartoons, and played games with me. Careful because when we were in Winter Park, Colorado, we were on the Alpine Slide and it started raining and my slide brakes didn’t work and he saved me because he almost rammed into me. He got hurt, and I didn’t. Like a kid because when I was always in Colorado, we always watched all of the Boomerang shows. Our favorite show was the Banana Split Show. Excellent because he was smart and very kind to his friends and family members.
Joyful because he always laughed and when we told him something he would make something up and make us happy and that made him laugh. Excited to see his nieces and nephews because he would always hug me and told me that he loved and missed me. Fun because he let me go get cake mixes, candles, and icing for our 3 layered cake.

Think about the whale.. serene, protective, capable of mystic communication, enjoying its wake on its scenic tour. It is the massive master of serenity. The whale channels a broken sound of eternal coding. Release your miss-direction and fears. Only man gives credence to the meaning of “time”. The true time keeper, is the creator. The whale reminds us to “glide” through life with the knowledge of ones power to create peace.

Astrology by Mary
Aquarius January 19 – February 18
WOW! Change is definitely in the wind. You are restless and eager for new – whether that be jobs, relationships, fun, learning, even health! You are tired of winter, tired of old patterns, even old friends. The new moon on Feb. 3 will highlight this attitude, so take advantage of the influence and reach for the change. Many opportunities will show up. Even if the potential for schooling or travel may appear to be costly, take the plunge. It t will pay off for you in the long run. Some of the situations being replaced have been building to this melt-down for some time. Just know that what’s gone is gone, what is over is over, and you, of all the signs, rise to the prospect of change with renewed excitement. The super full moon on Feb. 18 will make it clear where you are going, and who may be left behind. The super full moon on March 19 will highlight your efforts at reviewing the costs. Even though you may move to new pastures, you never really forget old buddies and good times, because your friendly attitude is universal and engaging.
i
Pisces February 18 – March 20
The innately intuitive part of you knows that you are about to experience a period of finally releasing the fears and anxieties that have been around for several years, and you know that you can have a “whole new attitude” if you accept finally what you already know. You have been born with an inner knowing and a response to the spiritual and artistic dimensions of mankind. Your intuition is showing up as being increasingly accurate. The new moon on Feb.3 will give you a starting point to observe this for yourself. You are also beginning to realize that your willingness to help others may not be as necessary as you think. So the seeds of change are beginning to sprout in your subconscious mind. As March comes in you will hear the call to arms and you prepare to present a more powerful and effective you. You may even surprise yourself with a new attitude about getting and spending money. The full moon on March 19 says you have been very busy reviewing and analyzing your situation, and you can congratulate yourself for this effort.
^
Aries March 20 – April 19
Early Aries are just at the starting point of a very advantageous period, which will last for about 4 months. Jupiter (a cosmic Santa Claus) is about to open up multiple opportunities, so get ready. Some of you have been releasing jobs, people, or plans (with a few tears and some misgiving), but you are on the verge of a brand new beginning which will be somewhat like the tip of the iceberg. Some of you are definitely in a dance (or a tug of war) with significant others, and the time has come when the situation either improves or goes by the board. You may have to take legal steps to solve the problems. The new moon on Feb. 3 will find you looking over some possibilities with new friends, new goals, new procedures. Many of these can be favorable. Just recognize that you do need to pay attention
to the ever-present regulations that the government creates for us. The super full moon on March 19 highlights a period where you have been paying attention to details. This is not your favorite occupation. If there are health issues, do what the doctor recommends.
_
Taurus April 19 – May 20
In February, your ruling planet, Venus may bring long awaited good news, or visits from loved ones at a distance. A few of you may find out that you are about to be grandparents! Sun signs within the first 15 degrees of Taurus have been having issues with health or work. But the major piece of news right now is that you are going through a surprising change of career, status, and place in the sun. That even applies to those of you who are retired. Also, family matters may be shifting and that too is somewhat uncomfortable for Taurus, as you like to change at your own pace, and now change is being thrust upon you. The super full moon on Feb. 18 should bring all this excitement to a head, and you can begin to adjust to the new situations. The new moon on March 4 will highlight friends and group activities. The super full moon on March 19th will show you how well you have resolved the issues, and how good you are at planning and organizing. When the shouting and the tumult dies down, Taurus is still there, steady as a rock, and we really need you to be there for us.
`
Gemini May 20 – June 21
This time of the year you are in high gear and great spirits. Many plans, new learning skills, and enlarged computer potentials are showing up. New Moon on 3 February is setting the tone for all this. Career wise, you may been feeling very lost or rather uncertain about it. The same holds true if you have parents or are a parent. However, the new Moon on Feb 3 will bring in new friends, new goals, and new attitudes! The super full moon on Feb. 18 will culminate with lots of new ideas. For you, the passage of Saturn in Libra will be very beneficial as it brings in excitement possibly romance, recreational pursuits, etc. In addition, it will lend foundation to your creativity. Gemini is very creative in the mental realms, but sometimes needs some strong grounding to get the idea to bloom! Also, this sign, like many others, has spent several years in clearing out, clearing up matters at home base. The super full moon on 19 March highlights a great accomplishment in this area. Are you really planning to move? Also, you are in the process of re-evaluating your financial goals. Do this in February, because by March you may want to hit the road!
a
Cancer June 22-July 22
This period starts out with lots of activity in your solar house of major money issues. Sudden surprises, wins, losses – anything goes. Some may even win big at the casinos. The new moon early February could set this off. At the new moon on March 4 the emphasis is on taking classes, possibly to develop
your psychic gifts, and possibly for travel. There may be tears to shed relating to the travel, but the angels are always around to help when needed. Trips to or close by water (especially ocean) will be in the offing. For early Cancers, the area of relationships is definitely going through an overhaul. If you are honest with yourself, you have known for a long time that you haven’t gotten what you want or need, so the time is at hand when you need to regroup and rethink how to solve the issues, and build better structures in relationships. Also, issues around parenting could be high on the list of priorities right now
b
Leo July 22 – August 22
As this period begins, you find yourself with many new friends and acquaintances, with even possibly the return of some old friends who may be cycling back around. The super full moon of Feb 18th makes you more aware than ever of the support you get from friends and co-workers. It really is a win-win situation. Another area of growing excitement comes in from the house of higher learning, or expansion and travel for work or fun. In matters of employment, it looks as though the company must be transformed, no question about it. Look to new friends and unexpected gatherings to obtain some important leads about where to go and what to expect. New moon on March 4 finds you a bit uneasy about the finances, but by the super full moon on March 19, you have been calculating and now you have a new outlook. There is no stopping a Leo!
c
Virgo August 22 – September 22
The new moon on Feb. 3 finds you with unexpected situations in the labor area. Perhaps it is new equipment, or even new bosses, or locations. At any rate, this is not comfortable for you, because you thrive in a more predictable environment. However, bosses soon learn that you are extremely thorough and responsible, so they will give you time to learn the new ropes. Don’t let the tension get you down. Take some anti-stress medication. You have been analyzing your financial picture and looking for ways to bring balance to everything. Pretty soon there will be extra energy in the big money house. You may receive big, or spend big. Sometimes it is a little of both. But there is such a lot of energy here that you may surprise yourself with the amount of money coming in and/or going out. The New Moon on March 4 highlights the area of significant others. Their behavior may be confusing to you, but don’t jump to conclusions. You don’t have all the facts just yet.
d
Libra September 22 – October 23
You are no doubt getting the lesson that Saturn has to teach you about relationships. For early Librans, some of these lessons may be about home and family. You could be shouldering a bigger load than usual, and some of you may have parent demands showing up. Or the home you live in may need some extra attention. In addition, it looks as though the significant other is about to break loose and decide they need a new start, or they will be gone more because of their job. The new moon on Feb. 3 brings in a great time of fun and recreation for you and your children, and by the full moon on Feb 18 everyone will be enjoying time with friends and group endeavors. The emphasis is on new friends and making plans for the future. On a more serious note, the new moon on March 4 indicates some confusion at work, and possibly you will have to pick up some of the slack. By the end of March, you will see this clearly.
e Scorpio
October 23 – November 21
Many Scorpios are dealing with the necessity to get the facts lined up for the
project at hand. Some of you are dealing with government procedures which do annoy you immensely, but you just have to endure until you get the seal of approval. Pretty soon there will be an explosion in the employment, labor area, and you will be on the fast track then. (Aren’t you glad you took the time to get the paper work finalized?) In the home area, many situations are shifting and changing. New Moon on Feb 3 sees this trend coming in. Everyone is on a different schedule. but you can handle that. The new moon on March 4 brings in enjoyment, recreation, and lots of creativity. Your psychic energy is in full bloom. By the full moon on March 19, you have put in a great deal of effort to lay groundwork for some new projects. And the transiting Saturn in Libra is requiring you to work with partners behind the scenes in order to bring the project to fruition. The rewards in doing this will be great!
f
Sagittarius November 22–December 21
Your star is on the rise! The new moon on Feb 3 brings in much activity in the areas of learning, short trips, new equipment (even cars), and possibly some news about siblings and/or relatives. Also, the area of love, life, and the pursuit of happiness is about to explode all around you, much like a 4th of July picnic! The new moon on March 4 may bring some cleaning, decorating at home, or possibly taking care of a sick parent. Or if you are a parent, you may be getting weary of all the demands that are being made on you. In the meantime, you are checking out the financial situations very carefully, to see if you can afford the excitement coming up. And it looks promising. Just make sure you read the fine print before you buy! You may be feeling the need to renovate the income area with some new ideas on how to improve your own value. Sag generally is very expansive with money, both income and outgo, and now you need to get to the bottom line on just what the costs are. Any effort here will be rewarded in the long run. By the end of March, you will be aware of how much effort you have put in just keeping the facts straight.. Building a solid foundation is the key to success.
g
Capricorn December 21 – January 19
Early Capricorns are feeling the pressure coming in from transiting Pluto in Capricorn. Pluto’s job is to overhaul, weed out what needs to be eliminated, and then build a new structure. Simply put, you are going through a transformation, and the old order is going away. For some, it is as simple as going on a diet, or starting a new health regime. Another area is your pocketbook. The new moon on Feb. 3 is highlighting how you make and spend money, and change here is immediate. Also, your solar career area is demanding that you move over and take in partnerships of some kind. This is difficult for you, because you are used to being in charge, but the effort to get along will pay off in the long run. An extra amount of activity will soon be showing up at home. Be prepared, for it will be very busy. Full moon on March 19 will peak with much detailed information that is and has been collected, received, and analyzed..
