Texas Girls Trip – South Padre Island
Looking for an island getaway that’s easy to get to, filled with great food and tons of activities for a girl’s getaway? Look no further than South Padre Island, Texas (SPI).
4 Since moving to Texas five years ago, I couldn’t wait to check out this part of the state. The barrier island has a little something for everyone. It is a beautiful slice of beachside (or bayside) that can be deeply appreciated by all of us beach lovers!
For those of us living outside of Austin, this is an easy six hour drive out of Hill Country to the Gulf of Mexico, but an even easier 40 minute flight. If you are coming from outside of Texas, there are two airports that serve South Padre Island: Valley International Airport (Harlingen) and Brownsville/South Padre Island International Airport.
One of my girlfriends from Cincinnati recently moved down to SPI and has a condo on that beach at The Sapphire. She graciously offered her place for a late May girls’ weekend! What a treat! When planning your getaway, I encourage you to consider a condo or
beach rental, especially if you are visiting with a group of gals. The Sapphire is a luxury beachfront property with spacious balconies for dining al fresco, a gym, fabulous pool and easy access to the beach! It is well worth the splurge.
Our girls’ weekend was attended by Mare (our host), Jeri (from Cincinnati), Doris, Mimi and me (each from Central Texas). First thing we did was stock our fridge with all the essentials for our weekend: Wine, water, snacks and breakfast fixins. This is a great reason for renting a condo with a kitchen. However, there would be no cooking of dinners on this getaway! There are too many fabulous restaurants to try.
While we did have vehicles to drive, the best way to get around South Padre Island is on foot, especially since the area is only two square miles in size (much of which is shoreline). There is also a free public shuttle, Island Metro, which runs the length of the town - across Laguna Madre to Port Isabel.
Start your day on South Padre with an early morning beach walk or yoga class. Taking advantage of the slower-paced island life is a perfect way to shift into your vacation mindset. We spent most of our days in our swimsuits. We enjoyed splitting time between the pool and beach! South Padre Island is home to more then three hundred days of sunshine every year. If you want a bit more action, you can add horseback riding or zip lining. There is also great shopping. Some of our favorite retail spots include Rica Clothing and Becky’s Place.
Liam’s Steak House & Oyster Bar is a favorite dinner spot right on the water. This is fine dining at its best. The oysters are some of the most delicious I have ever tasted and you can’t go wrong with the whole red snapper or flounder. What kept us coming back, however, was dessert: Liam’s Chocolate Bomb to be specific! That alone is worth the trip to South Padre! We also had dinner at another local favorite, Sea Ranch, a couple of times. Some of the most outstanding dishes included the Alaskan King Crab and the Oysters Rockefeller. If you are looking for a casual dining option that’s directly on the beach, aptly name the Cafe on the Beach. Definitely don’t bypass the tropical drink offerings, as the Pina Colada is out of this world! Enjoy the ocean breeze at this totally al fresco spot, and order some coconut shrimp or a piece of fresh grilled fish for your main course. After dinner make your way to the SPI entertainment district where you’ll find plenty of bars with live music and fun crowds. One of our preferred after dinner spots for dancing and cocktails is Laguna Bob. It is a casual bayside gathering spot with excellent music. Stop in for a cold beer at South Padre’s own brew pub, the second oldest in the state of Texas, Padre Island Brewing Company. All their beers are brewed inhouse. There are also a number of beer flight options, as well as happy hour offerings.
On our last day in Padre, we opted for a day of beauty at the Sapphire Spa. This signature Aveda spa offers everything you could possibly need, including hair, nail, and other must-have spa treatments. I enjoyed a fabulous sea salt body scrub in addition to an hourlong massage. Total bliss!
Some of my favorite Zen moments on this trip were kicking back at the pool, chilling beachside, watching the amazing sunrise and many heartfelt conversations with my girlfriends over a bottle of wine. South Padre Island offers an amazing opportunity to relax, revive and renew your spirit, Texas style! Grab your boots, a cowboy hat and bff’s. Any day you spend on South Padre Island is going to be long and sunny.
